Meet the Cover Stars Our cover stars this month are the Soogrin family from Pietermaritzburg - StephanieAnne and Lucienne Soogrin, with their daughters, Mia (4) and Lou-Ann (2). Stephanie is the marketing co-ordinator for Midlands Meander Association and Lucienne is a sales executive at Nashua. Mia “Mia Moo” enjoys helping her mom bake and using her imagination to play with her little sister. Mia enjoys bike riding, painting and drawing, especially on the walls at home (!) and loves bonding with her dad. Mia does not like certain animals or sharks, but she loves her fruit and is always sharing her eats with her sister. She is a very competitive child and always gives of her best. Mia is very independent, affectionate and well mannered. She attends a beautiful school and loves waking up in the morning for school. Lou-Ann “Lulu” is a very busy bee. She loves being around her big sister and copies everything Mia does. She is often found unpacking kitchen cupboards or wearing her mom’s shoes. Lulu is very loving and has a big love for animals, fruit and veggies. She is always looking in the fridge for strawberries or orange slices. Lulu is a big fan of Michael Jackson and can sit for hours watching his live concert DVD. She enjoys being outside on the jungle gym or swimming, there is nothing she is afraid of she really is a brave little girl. “We love being parents to our girls. We love watching them grow into their own little personalities. We are truly blessed to be able to provide them with everything they need and that we were their chosen parents. Our lives are perfect because of our girls,” concludes Stephanie. Written by Sarah Mackintosh

Winter Beauty and Makeup Tips Dry Lips: this is normal in winter, but not if you follow these two steps: • Add a little bit of sugar with a pea size amount of tooth paste on your toothbrush and gently rub your lips in a circular motion; this helps to exfoliate your lips, getting rid of all the dry dead skin, leaving you with super soft kissable lips. • Always moisturise your lips with a lip balm or Vaseline before applying lipstick (the trick here is not to apply a lot but just enough). Foundation: during winter it is best to use a creamy foundation so your skin does not look and feel tight or dry - creamy foundations help to moisturize the skin (if you have oily skin, use a water-based foundation instead). • Remember to exfoliate your skin once or twice a week to get rid of all the dead skin cells so your foundation does not look flaky. Sunscreen: always wear a sunscreen or a moisturiser with an SPF of at least 15 - yes,

even in winter! • Use a non-greasy sunscreen under your foundation; if you find it to be too greasy then try using a BB cream which has a sunscreen. A tinted moisturiser also gives you coverage and has anti-ageing properties (perfect for the lady on the go who just doesn’t have time for a full foundation and moisturiser application). Makeup Removal: NEVER ever go to bed with makeup on, no matter how tired you are. • In the winter I use coconut oil to remove my makeup, then a makeup wipe to remove the residue. This works wonders in removing makeup, especially mascara! By Claudette Lingerfelder, Beauty Beyond By Claudette, www.beautybeyondkzn.com.

Varicose Veins

Varicose veins are large tortuous veins of the legs often caused by broken valves within the veins that remove blood from the legs to the heart. These valves commonly break down due to a family history, previous trauma or pregnancy. Once the valve is broken, blood then flows freely within the vein back to the lower leg and feet, and not up to the heart. This causes the typical varicose veins symptoms of pain, heavy legs, cramping, swelling, skin itch and skin pigmentation. Left untreated, varicose veins due to venous reflux will slowly progress to cause more symptoms over time. Modern treatment of varicose veins includes endovenous radio frequency ablation. During this procedure a small catheter/wire is inserted under local anaesthetic into the vein, and the vein sealed with heat. This is true walk-in walk-out surgery and the patient resumes their normal activities the next day.

7

Spider veins are small thread veins on the surface of the skin. They are most often a cosmetic problem, and are best treated by sclerotherapy. During sclerotherapy a chemical is injected into the vein using a very fine needle. The vein is damaged and the body naturally removes the vein.

Kids’ Life/Party Life

Creating a Lifelong Love of Water According to Odette Randelhoff, Chairperson of Pietermaritzburg & Midlands Swim Teachers Association for over 20 years, children should be introduced to water in a fun way as early as possible. Plastic floating toys, cups or jugs with holes in are good ways to encourage playtime in the bath. Once the baby is old enough to lie in the bath, sinking toys are a great way to get children to put their faces in water while they search for their toys. Odette emphasises that FUN is the key word. Another bath time activity is to give your toddler a plastic straw for them to blow bubbles. Odette says a safe swimmer is a happy swimmer and yet drowning statistics are on the increase. Do not become a statistic. The World Health Organisation estimates that drowning claims the lives of more than 60 000 children under the age of five and more than 360 000 people each year. Sadly, Africa’s drowning statistics are the highest in the world – more than six children every hour of every day of every year! Learning to swim is a life skill and should be enjoyed by all parties – the swimmer, swimming teacher, and the family member who takes the young toddler to lessons. Lessons should be flexible and accommodating so that each toddler arrives at their best time. For adults, the saying “better late than never” applies! Odette believes that if you break the fear of water, it is broken for life. Parents and child minders are reminded to keep a watchful eye on ALL children at ALL times around ALL water! For more information contact Odette on 082 466 8577 or email randelhoff_family@telkomsa.net.
