Editor’s Life

Back to School, Yay!

So the kids are now back to school and we are over half way through the year already. The kids are probably already stressed out with all the homework, sports and cultural activities that they need to fit into their busy days – I know that my daughter is. It took all of 2 days for her to feel overwhelmed again! But as long as we continue to be as organised as possible, it helps take the pressure off… Long may it last!

As I write this, we are freezing our socks off in Durban – our recent family camping trip to Underberg was interesting to say the least. Getting into bed at night was like climbing into a fridge! I made sure that I stayed well and truly under the duvet until the sun was up the next day! But we did enjoy sitting around the camp fire in the evening and over breakfast, chatting and playing games. We have a fabulous competition this

month – we would like to hear which of our advertisers you have used and why – you can be in with a chance to WIN 10 x movie tickets – perfect for a kids party outing! Without our advertisers, your favourite little magazine would not be possible so I do encourage you to use their services as often as possible, and be sure to mention that you heard about them through Mum’s Mail! Have you had a look at our new Facebook Community Group yet? If not, please do join the group to connect with other members. You can share tips and tricks with each other, recipes, craft ideas, events… just about anything really! Please check out the FB group at ‘@Mum’s Mail Group PMB’. Happy Women’s Month! Enjoy.

Tips for Good Posture in Mums Teaching yourself good posture can decrease, eliminate or avoid neck, mid back and lower back pain: When breast feeding, it is important to sit in a chair that offers good support. Sit right at the back of your chair, feet flat on the floor and knees and hips in a straight line. An arm rest or pillows for your arm to rest on is also important. Hold baby in the crook of your supported arm.

Biokinetics | Chiropractic Physiotherapy Parklane Centre, Pietermaritzburg 033 345 4020 www.balancemed.co.za

When picking up your baby or child, try to avoid bending forward. You should rather bend your knees and hips with feet slightly apart, thereby moving into a squatting position. Support your little one underneath with one arm and wrap the other arm around his/her torso. Slowly straighten into a standing position. When carrying your child for long periods it is advisable to rather use a baby carrier – when carrying your little one on your hip, you are putting pressure on your spine and surrounding structures, which may lead to spinal, hip or leg pain. It is not always possible to do things the ‘right way’, but it is important to remember to contract your tummy muscles when you have to move into a position that will be strenuous on your spine. When your tummy muscles are contracted, there is more support for your spine, and therefore less chance of injury. If you have tried all the tips above, and have persistent pain, it is important to get yourself assessed and treated by your chiropractor before your pain becomes a chronic problem. REMEMBER YOU! Woman! History has shown that women are incredibly powerful beings! This is evident when we look at how dramatically our roles have changed in the last two or three generations. How many women reading these words had a grandmother or great-grandmother working as a full-time professional? My suspicion is that it was very rare... In a short time, we women have evolved from full-time homemakers into entrepreneurs, professionals and full-time employees while still fulfilling the roles of homemaker, nurturer, parent and partner. Being spread so thinly, we often forget about ourselves and if we do remember, we only remember to take care of our exterior – but what about our interior...? Our mind, thoughts and feelings – the part of us that drives the rest. How easily do we lose the balance of work, self-care and other-care? The pressure to keep the balance has increased dramatically! What can be done about this in the modern world? By bringing the focus back to you, the individual, who chooses to fulfil all these roles successfully – making you the priority, not for selfish reasons but because you realise that if you lose your footwork, the negative implications will greatly overshadow the time invested in yourself. When we take charge of our minds, thoughts and feelings, the results will be hugely beneficial! Increased energy, boosted productivity and enjoyment in every role we choose to play in the current day. You have an immensely powerful mind – you have a choice in how you process information; therefore what might overwhelm you now, could be perceived and processed as enjoyment. Imagine having your entire mind supporting you in every area of your life... By Elna Burger, True Awakenings, 031 563 1552, www.trueawakenings.co.za. 7

The Importance of Breastfeeding Breastfeeding is very important for your baby and for you. Lansinoh® has put together some information to help you to succeed in your breastfeeding goals. Breastfeeding your new-born baby Your first milk (colostrum) may be small in quantity, but it is rich in everything he needs. As it passes through your baby’s digestive system, it lines his stomach and intestines to better defend against bacteria and viruses. Your colostrum also helps him to produce his first stool to excrete meconium (the substances ingested while in the womb). Why breastfeeding is important for your baby Your breastmilk is the only food designed specifically for your baby. It changes as he grows, to suit his needs. There are both short and long term benefits for your baby if you breastfeed exclusively for the recommended time of six months. • Breastfed babies have fewer and less severe upper and lower respiratory tract infections;

they are less likely to need hospitalisation. • Ear infections are 3 to 4 times more common in infants who are not breastfed. • Breastmilk has factors which protect against urinary tract infections. • Breastfed babies are less likely to suffer from diarrhoea and gastroenteritis. • Constipation is much more common in formula fed infants. • Breastfed babies respond better to vaccines, as their immune system is more mature. • Breastfeeding is protective against SIDS, especially exclusive breastfeeding. • Breastmilk contains vital substances to help the development of your baby’s brain, retina and central nervous system, as well as growth factors and hormones. There are many more ways in which breastfeeding benefits mum and baby, and you can read the full article on www. mumsmail.com. Source: Anna Song, brand ambassador for Lansinoh® South Africa.

Makeup Tips to Make You Look Younger No matter your age, there’s always a day or two when you wish you could look a little younger. Sure, you’re already beautiful as you are, but for those early mornings after a night of no sleep, you might want to know a trick or two to turn the clock back a bit. Here are a few tips from professional makeup artists:

skin fresh looking without adding heavy foundations. A light mineral makeup will balance the colour of your skin and keep it fresh looking. Whatever light foundation you choose, make sure you avoid really cakey products. Heavy foundation will settle into all the fine lines and pores and make you look older.

The whites of your eyes After your eyeshadow application, put a bit of pure white on the corners of your eyes by the tear ducts. The bit of white draws attention to your eyes and actually makes them look a little bigger. Plus, the white brightens up potential discoloration around the eyes which makes you look more awake and energised. If you’d like a fancier or more festive look, put a bit of light-coloured shimmer over the white. Then your eyes will really sparkle!

Keep it creamy As lines start to form on your face, you may want to change your makeup to suit your changing skin. One easy way to do this is to use cream-based products. Professional makeup artist, Bustle beauty expert, and owner of Sugar Skull Makeup Marissa Hohner says, “Cream blushes, cream eyeshadow and cream highlighters will all give you a younger appearance. The more moisturised your skin looks, the younger your skin appears.”

Drowning Statistics Need to be Reduced Urgently!

The World Health Organisation says that drowning in children under the age of five has staggering numbers… 360 000 each year! That is more than six children every hour of every day of every year! Odette Randelhoff, a well-respected swimming teacher in Pietermaritzburg strongly believes that ‘a safe swimmer is a happy swimmer’ and yet drowning statistics are on the increase! Do not become a statistic. “Swimming should be fun BUT safe.” says Odette.

A set of basic rules should be adhered to AT ALL TIMES: • No unsupervised swimming. Children must tell an adult (and the adult MUST answer and acknowledge the child) before entering a pool. • NO child should be allowed on the pool surround at any time unless they are actually about to enter the pool. • Children should always enter the pool safely at the steps or shallow end of the pool. No running and jumping into the pool!

• NO ROUGH PLAY! Educated Life

Why Puzzles are Important for Stimulating Young Minds There is nothing new about the fact that children love doing puzzles. In most shapes or forms, puzzles can keep your child entertained for hours. And the really great news? Puzzles can help turn your child into a genius. Okay, perhaps not all children who do puzzles will automatically turn into miniEinstein’s (here’s hoping though), but studies have proven just how much they can really help your child. From a very early age, your child starts to learn a variety of things through play. These learned skills often assist your child as they grow up and are faced with academic challenges. As parents, it is our job to put them in an environment where they have access to play time that teaches them things. Something as simple as a puzzle can do the trick. One of the biggest perks to puzzle building is fine motor skills. This is the ability to manoeuvre small objects

and strengthen small muscles and joints in your child’s hands. This skill can never be developed too early and will assist them with vital skills such as writing. Another one is hand-eye co-ordination. As your child attempts to place each puzzle piece in the right space, they are actually strengthening the connection between what their eye sees and their hand does. And while they are trying to figure out which pieces go where, they are practising their problem solving skills – which is one thing they will definitely need throughout their lives. Puzzles also introduce your child to a world of creativity. They learn that they can build something from scratch, and are rewarded with the finished product.
