Editor’s Life That’s it, we made it to the last Mum’s Mail issue of 2016 – 8 months into my new role as Editor-in-Chief of Mum’s Mail magazine and I survived – my family survived, although don’t ask me how – it has been a hectic roller coaster for us all! Now it is time to start to unwind and enjoy some quality family time together. We are hoping to go to the South Coast for a few days and also, my family from Jo’burg may be coming to visit us in Durban, which will be wonderful.

Tala Private Game Reserve
Treat the Family to a Year-End Wildlife Adventure at Tala Collection
Annual family holidays are always eagerly anticipated but need some degree of planning to keep everyone happy and prevent the siblings from killing each other! Finding an ideal breakaway spot to suit everyone is not easy. Accessibility and cost are top factors to consider. Tala Collection Private Game Reserve is situated less than an hour’s drive from Durban and Pietermaritzburg – saving on travelling time and fuel costs.
A variety of accommodation suits every budget – from rustic to luxurious. You may even spot an impala or warthog ambling past your window. Guests can self-cater, dine in the main restaurant or for the bigger parties, book the Boma for an evening braai. For wildlife enthusiasts, you can enjoy thrilling sightings of white rhino (under 24hour guard), wallowing hippo and graceful giraffe – just to name a few of the animals
found on the reserve. Children under five are not allowed on game drives. Visitors can do self-drives. However, don’t leave your car in an un-designated area – you don’t want to upset a grumpy hippo or rhino! A variety of animals can be seen grazing peacefully together at the main waterhole, providing perfect photographic opportunities. Go birdwatching, tackle guided walks or the three-different mountain-bike trails in the Reserve (10km, 5km or 3km - perfect for a family outing). Don’t forget to pack the sunscreen, helmets, water-bottles (and mountain-bikes!). The Rock Pool area is a welcome oasis on hot days for swimming, picnicking or a braai. When not outside, play board games and just relax together. Make magic memories and book a hot-air balloon ride to view Tala from a different angle. Take Care of Your Tyres and Save Simple things like checking your tyres’ pressure to make sure that they are properly inflated can make a real difference in how long your tyres last. Under or overinflated tyres don’t wear evenly and won’t last as long. Also, since the front and rear axles and right and left sides of your car wear down your tyres differently, rotating your tyres regularly between the different positions will ensure they wear evenly and last longer. It is recommended that you rotate your tyres every 10 000km.

To avoid any problems, follow these important care tips: • Inspect your tyre: Inspect your tyres regularly for wear and any damage to avoid any sudden problems. • Check the air pressure: Driving with incorrect tyre pressures can affect a vehicle’s handling and braking, particularly in wet conditions, and can seriously compromise your safety. • Respect the load capacity: Tyres loaded beyond their maximum loads can build up excessive heat that may result in sudden tyre destruction. • Driving at high speed can damage your tyre: At greater speeds, tyres have a greater chance of being damaged by road hazards or heat build-up.

The Diet Everyone Talks About Since having my son three years ago, I have really struggled to get back in shape and lose weight. Then I met Daniela Papini from The Diet Everyone Talks About (Durban North). Wow, what an inspiration! She is a real example to her clients and she really lives what she preaches. Daniela helped me through my journey and went above and beyond to motivate me. She even started walking and running with me in her spare time to motivate me – she is a long distance runner herself. She was also very patient with me when I fell off the wagon! Within the first five weeks I lost 5kgs! The Diet Everyone Talks About is not a fad diet – it is a healthy lifestyle that will help you reach your weight-loss goals and maintain them.

Its objective is to stimulate the body’s metabolism to ensure that the body burns excess fat rather than storing it. This is why people on The Diet Everyone Talks About not only lose weight, but also experience no hunger pangs while doing so! Festive Overindulgences: The Bounce Back Factor!
The festive season is all about celebrations, and for many that means binging on food, intoxicating chemical substances and physical inactivity, all of which pose risks to health. Weight gain averages between 2kg to 4kg over the festive season and there are significant spikes in heart attacks and heart failures on three particular holidays – Christmas day, Day of Goodwill and New Year’s Day. Other common complaints cited include hangovers, headaches, heartburn, biliousness, and tummy troubles. How to bounce back from an overindulgent holiday or late-night binge? Take care of your liver. When Is The Right Time To Send Your Child To School? Most preschools accept children between the ages of two-and-a-half and three years old, but that doesn’t mean the child is magically ready for preschool at that age.
children on ways to keep their clothes and toys organised in their room. Develop social skills: A socially ready child should be the priority, not academic (intellectual) readiness. Consider these questions: Can your child be away from you? Are they talking about going to school? Encourage emotional readiness: Learning to manage and express emotions in a healthy manner is not only important for preschool, but is also an essential life skill. A preschool child has difficulty verbalising, understanding and putting labels on feelings and can feel out of control. Cultivate communication skills: Listening and talking are very valuable for school success. Focus on the basics: Before your child starts preschool, teach them their full name, their parents’ names, their age and even possibly a telephone number or address.
Here are some of the important factors to consider: Is your child fairly independent? Most preschools want your child to be potty trained, able to wash their hands after painting or going to the toilet, able to eat their lunch without assistance and sleep on their own. As parents we need to equip our children with basic self-care skills. Have they spent time away from you? Children who haven’t had many opportunities to be away from parents could have separation anxiety. Beverly Bouton, preschool teacher and Clamber Club Expert, suggests organising one or two days with a familiar family member. Student Debt: Helpful Tips to Pay off Student Loans Faster There are a few ways to efficiently manage student debt and repayments. Once the excitement of obtaining a tertiary qualification wears off, you’re faced with enormous debt repayments – and that is discouraging. Negotiating student loans Take your time to shop around between different financial institutions to figure out which institution offers the best deal in terms of interest rate, total loan amount to be paid and the repayment plan. When applying for a loan, you should ask for the exact terms of the loan before it is granted. Minimize the total amount you have to borrow from a financial institution by getting some form of casual employment while you’re studying if you can. This will not only help you cover basic day-to-day costs, but will also impact the initial loan amount and save you later once you start paying the loan back. Are you or your child not coping?

DebtSafe’s tips to manage student loan debt: • Work out how much is enough. Borrow only what you need and don’t splurge on unnecessary things. Determine how much you need to cover your student costs, academic material, your cost of living and your family’s contribution. • Draw up a budget that includes the monthly repayments you need to make. Budgeting will ensure that you not only know where your money goes each month, but also that you will remain within your financial means. • Shop around for cheaper rates and be prepared to negotiate. • Consider working while you’re studying. This will ensure that you won’t have to borrow as much as you originally intended. Consider tutoring, bartending or being a waitron.

How to choose a Pre-Primary School Choosing a school for your little one should not be a last minute, hasty decision. Start looking at least three months before you need to enter your child, if you are looking to place a baby. Play Jingle Jangle This game will make a fun party game, no matter what the age of your kids. It will get their blood pumping and is sure to keep them entertained for quite a while! You will not find this game easy. It involves a skill that has eluded children since time began. That’s right – you have to be quiet. Told you it was hard! You will need blindfolds, bells or keys and string or ribbon. Begin by blindfolding all the players except one. This person will need to have some bells attached to some string or ribbon tied around their ankles or wrists. For those of you who don’t have a ready supply of ankle bells (really? No ankle bells? How odd!) – then you could tie on some keys (just make sure you ask permission first). The aim is for the jangler to avoid capture. They can move away from the blindfolded players trying to catch them, but to do so may also give away where they are, as moving will make them jangle.

Create a Trendy Monochrome Space
As we head into the festive time of year I find more people approach me to ask how we afford times such as Christmas with seven children.
Children spend a lot of time in their bedrooms, so it’s important that their space should be a reflection of their little personalities.
