Editor’s Life As I type this, the kids have JUST gone back to school, what a relief! My wallet is groaning under the strain of what felt like months of school holidays. And while there is a lot of “free” entertainment to make use of (the beach, playing at friends, skateboarding at the local parks etc), somehow the “I’m bored” lament is always followed by a request for entertainment that costs a whole heap of money.

Accounting ServiceS Professional Accounting and Bookkeeping Services for individuals and small businesses in Pietermaritzburg. Lindsay Longhurst B. Compt (Hons)

Take going to the movies for example, besides the cost of the movie ticket (which can vary between R0 if you have a Discovery Vitality Kids’ Club Card and it is before 7pm, right up to over R100 for the fanciest cinema seats in the house), the cost of a “combo” snack (popcorn, a drink and sweets) is anything from R50 upwards. Movies have sadly become a rare luxury for most families. So what can you do for “free” nowadays? Living close to the sea, we have been taking advantage of the great weather by going to the beach most weekends, but if you have to travel far to get there, it’s not really “free”, is it? How about a picnic in your local park? And do you exercise with your kids? As a family we do the 5km Park Run every Saturday morning at 8am (it’s a worldwide event, so check out www.parkrun.co.za to find your closest venue), and while the kids certainly don’t do back flips about having to get out of bed at 7am on a Saturday, once they are up and moving, they do seem to have fun.

Epilepsy – A Disease Shrouded In Mystery Epilepsy can be defined as a tendency to spontaneous, abnormal electrical activity in the brain manifesting as seizures/fits. It is a disease of many causes, but a common abnormality in that there are abnormal ‘discharges’ or ‘firing mechanisms’ in the brain.

the brain. More exciting than actually being able to properly diagnose the specific type of Epilepsy, is the ability to treat and manage this disease well, to the point of controlling the Epilepsy and limiting the amount of fits suffered. The aim is to limit fits to minimal/ zero. Medication and surgeries developed have made this possible.

Though shrouded in mystery since the beginning of time and often called ‘falling sickness’, it is relatively common, affecting 0.5% to 1% of the population. Epilepsy has had thousands of different names through history and has been managed in weird and wonderful ways. In very ancient times it was referred to as Holy Sickness and Sacred Disease and linked to evil spirits. Once also called ‘lunatism’ and named as a disorder related to the phases of the moon. Modern medicine has been able to show, with the help of EEGs (Electro Encephalograms) and brain imaging, that there is truly a ‘natural’ cause that affects the brain’s neurons and the functioning of the ‘electrical circuit’ of

Epilepsy is a common condition that is highly treatable today. As a society, we should not stigmatise the sufferers, but rather be aware and able to encourage and support family and friends who suffer from it. Unhealthy Stress

South African stress levels are particularly high, and many lifestyle diseases, healthrisk behaviours, suicide behaviours, violence, trauma-producing behaviours, performance levels and difficulties in coping, HIV/AIDS, retrenchments, financial pressure and cancer are all stress related. Studies have shown that up to 50% or more of work absenteeism in some companies is stress related. Professor Lourens Schlebusch (UKZN) has designed and validated a Stress Symptom Checklist. He suggests that one should look at three levels of stress. The three systems involve an analysis of your physical reactions, psychological reactions and behavioural reactions which are also related to your social interactions, because that is where you often express your behaviour. We are often aware of our physical and psychological behaviour, but not our behavioural reactions.

Why Should A Baby See A Chiropractor?

Beauty by Tegan Have your senses awakened

De-stress: R500

We all ask “why would a newborn baby need to see a chiropractor, when chiropractors deal with pain?” Well, hopefully I can answer this question with a small explanation of what chiropractors actually do:

30 min de-stress back massage • 60 min Spalicious pedicure

Pamper me: R750

60 min Six Timeless facial • 60 min Spalicious pedicure • 30 min Express manicure

Protea Hilton Hotel Call Tegan 071 821 8404

Chiropractors correct fixations in the spine, this is an area of the spine that is malfunctioning due to several factors, such as poor stationary posture, trauma or wear and tear. This malfunction can lead to nerve irritation and muscle spasm in the area. Correction of malfunction allows the mobility of the spine to return to normal, and a reduction of muscle spasm and nerve irritation. When a baby is born naturally, with no assistance, the baby’s movement through the birth canal mobilises the spine and removes any fixations that may have developed in utero, especially in the third trimester when there is less space for movement. When a baby is born via c-section or natural birth with assistance such as forceps, this mobilisation of the spine does not occur and there is a greater chance of fixations being present in the baby’s spine.

www.toptots.co.za

Mother & Child Workshop

Babies 8 Weeks - 4 Years

These fixations can manifest themselves in trouble with latching, fussiness of feeding on one side, tummy cramping, colic and favouring one posture (ie. holding the head to one side or one leg up).

Creative Messy Play Perceptual Development Social Interaction Music Programme Sensory Motor Activities Fine & Gross Motor Activities Baby Massage

A chiropractor will assess your baby for any fixations, and remove them with a gentle manual technique. Babies generally respond well to chiropractic treatment, and will show an improvement on the same day. Most chiropractors give you exercises to do at home with your baby.
