Editor’s Letter
Happy New Year!
I hope that you had a wonderful Christmas and a very Happy New Year! Our festive break was spent chasing all over the UK visiting friends and family, most of whom we hadn’t seen for over a year – we had such a wonderful time, although we were so exhausted that we needed another holiday when we got back, so decided to go camping for a few days! The weather was lovely, for the most part, the kids met lots of friends, little Nunu got to run around on the beach and we simply relaxed and spent a few wonderful days together as a family, which was pure bliss.
We certainly needed it as we have been very busy over the last few months - you will read more about our latest project ‘Who Needs The Mall’ on page six. We encourage you to go over to have a look at www. whoneedsthemall.com and support our local crafters. This fantastic marketplace is being used to promote beautiful and unusual, locally produced, handmade
African goods. We are adding new ranges and ‘Shops’ all the time and I’m sure that this year will be a very busy one. We have also just launched our brand new Mum’s Mail website – it now features lots of wonderful articles, of course our ever popular Competitions page, and an interactive Online Directory and Events page. You can even submit your own Articles and Events, free of charge, so be sure to check it out and see what all the hype is about, at www.mumsmail.com. Finally, we are now in full swing organising the 5th Annual PMB Ladies Breakfast in association with The Sunflower Fund, which will be held on 23 March 2018, so read more about this year’s event on page seven. Have a wonderful February and Happy Valentine’s Day! Victoria xxx

Healthy Life
The Benefits of Hippotherapy Emma Wijnberg is an Occupational Therapist who practices Hippotherapy using Raz (a small, round pony). “The results I see are phenomenal, particularly in children with special needs, as well as those that struggle with difficulties such as ADHD and poor posture,” says Emma. Hippotherapy refers to how therapists (speech, OT and physio) reach therapeutic goals, using the purposeful manipulation of a horse’s movement to engage sensory, neuromotor, and cognitive systems to achieve functional outcomes. It is not a riding lesson - the aim is to improve function, using the movement of the horse. The horse’s unique movement activates the sensory system and helps the brain write new neural pathways. For each step the
horse takes, the child has to adjust their balance eight times. In a half-hour session, the child gets the equivalent of 2 000 to 3 000 steps! The horse’s inimitable movement targets every aspect of the neurological system. Sudden stops and starts, changes of direction etc., all challenge the child’s balance, trunk stability and posture. This input cannot be replicated by anything on the ground. “In my experience, Hippotherapy is the most effective treatment modality to help children develop core strength, motor planning, coordination, sensory modulation, self-confidence, concentration, emotional regulation and even speech. Horses seem to get everything working better, whilst the children are having fun!” concludes Emma. Educated Life
Steps for Choosing a Preschool
Trudie Gilmore, Assistant General Manager at ADvTECH Junior Colleges, says there are few things that instill more anxiety and apprehension in parents than the task of finding the right school for their child’s first foray into education. She advises parents to structure their search as follows: Start your search at least one school year prior to attending, and note that many schools take applications as early as just after a child’s birth. Attend an open day or expo to hear about the philosophy, admission process and more, and then submit the application and registration fee. You can view the school while classes are in session, and they recommend that you bring your child to spend time in the classroom. Know how often and how long you’d like your child to attend. Most schools should offer half-day and full-day programmes. Gilmore says parents should check for the following to ensure that a pre-school programme is well-run: • Assess the quality

of children’s relationships with the staff. Pay close attention to the language used in the classroom and the friendliness of the staff. • View a few different classrooms to see how the teachers interact with the children. • Home-to-school connections are important. Preschools that have high family involvement are often the schools with the strongest programmes. When families are involved, children do better, teachers feel supported and everyone works together for the children’s learning and development. • High-quality preschools have structure: They follow a specific philosophy or model and have specific guidelines for addressing challenging behaviour. • Discipline policies should emphasise positive approaches to teaching children new skills and proactive strategies for behaviour management such as classroom rules, routines and socialemotional lessons or curriculum. Developing Environments where Special Needs Learners can Thrive
Nearly three-quarters of South African children living with disabilities are currently not in school (The challenges of realising inclusive education in South Africa, by Dana Donohue and Juan Bornman). Adopt-a-School Foundation (AAS) urges all stakeholders to work together to develop strategies to support and educate these marginalised learners. “Schools in disadvantaged communities face many challenges. They are very seldom able to sufficiently accommodate learners with special needs,” says Steven Lebere, Executive Director of Adopt-a-School. “As a result, most of these children simply never enter the formal schooling system, even though many of them are very bright and would thrive in the right environment,” continues Lebere. Where “special” schools for learners with disabilities do exist, they are often severely under- resourced. “The Department of Basic Education’s schools act states that all schools must be inclusive of children with special
needs. Teachers are not always equipped to diagnose learners with learning disabilities or intervene effectively,” says Lebere. “At AAS we want to support every aspect of our adopted schools, from the facilities to the teachers to the health and emotional wellbeing of the learners,” explains Lebere. This unique, holistic approach to supporting schools is called the Whole School Development (WSD) model. AAS uses this mechanism to improve and uplift the academic, infrastructural, social and security environment in their adopted schools. WSD ensures that schools have the necessary management and community leadership to support an environment conducive to excellence in both teaching and learning. For more information on Adopt-a-School visit the Foundation’s website at www.adoptaschool.org.za, e-mail info@adoptaschool.co.za or call 011 - 592 6430. Kick-Start Your Child’s Year
