Meet the Cover Star Our very cute cover star is Riley Jordyn Naudé Springolo - she was just three weeks old at the time of the photo. Her parents are Chantélle Naudé and Marco Springolo. Chantélle works for a tender publishing company, sourcing tender notices and project leads for the building and construction industry. Marco is self-employed and his company is called Azurri Engineering. He also builds rhino towers for game reserves. They live in Hilton, and Riley has two big sisters – Nicole (18) and Mia (2). “All three of my beautiful girls know what they want. They are strong and independent. They are beautiful inside and out,” says their proud mom. “It’s quite a handful having just girls under
the same roof, each with their own voice and opinion but so worth it. I wouldn’t change a thing. As a family, food is always a winner - everyone is always hungry. Most evenings we cook together or braai. We try to go away to the beach as often as we can, or we relax at home playing in the garden - the girls have a trampoline and pool. Sometimes with the eldest, we watch movies and series,” says Chantélle. On being a parent: “What’s there not to love? We’ve been blessed with three amazing daughters who drive us crazy but we love them unconditionally.
Hard work is always worth it in the end. The cuddles and hearing ‘I love you’ are the best!” concludes Chantélle. Chatelle and Marco’s advice to new parents: “Love unconditionally. Have patience and understanding always - they are little humans too. Sometimes just forget the dishes and go jump in the puddles. To kids, love = time. Always remember, as my dad said to me, God wouldn’t give you something you can’t handle. He’s blessed you with the best and it’s your job to love, nurture and protect.” By Sarah Mackintosh. 6

Power Gro
Power Gro: For Longer, Stronger, Healthier Hair Do you want longer, stronger, healthier hair? Try Power Gro Hair Supplement! It is available as hair food, hair gel and hair supplement capsules. Your one-a-day hair supplement capsule, Power Gro Hair Supplement Capsules contain MSM, essential for the formation of keratin – the tough matrix found in hair, skin and nails. This super-ingredient is combined with a full spectrum of the most important nutrients needed to grow longer, stronger and healthier hair. It provides nourishment from root to tip! Power Gro Hair Gel is packed with vitamins - it nourishes and moisturises the hair and gives complete styling control, adding sheen and body.
Power Gro Hair Food is fortified with added vitamins, herbs and essential oils, and it revitalises the appearance and restores the beauty of your hair. It also softens your hair and prevents hair breakage. Power Gro is available at pharmacies and selected stores. Hair Care Tips for Winter Extra hydration Try using an oil-based moisturiser in winter, and once a week use a moisturising hair mask that you leave in for at least half an hour. Take the time to pamper your hair and you will see the benefits!
Shampoo less Washing too often can make for an itchy, flaky scalp. Dry shampoo If your hair is used to being washed often, you can use dry shampoo to give volume to limp hair (it really does work!) Give your hair a break If you are highlighting your hair or using chemical straighteners, winter is a good time to cut back on this to give your hair time to recover. These products dry your hair out and with the added dryness of winter, your hair won’t be happy. Maybe a new look is what you need this winter! Less heat Try to cut back on heat styling this winter, as too much of this can cause split ends and breakage. When you do style your hair, use heat protection like leave-in conditioners. Try different styles that don’t require styling - like braids and buns. Use an overnight serum Try using a serum one night a week, or more often if needed. This will nourish and moisturise your hair while you sleep. Combat static If you battle with static in winter, a good way to overcome this is to use a leave-in conditioner. Post-Traumatic Stress in Mothers
Some mothers may experience post-traumatic stress (also known as birth trauma) following childbirth, which may be caused by real or perceived trauma either during delivery of the baby, or shortly after childbirth. experience PTSD following childbirth. It is important to note that the experience may be traumatic for the mother, even if there are no “obvious” signs of traumatic childbirth to the family, friends, or delivery team.
There are many different possible traumas which could be experienced, including (but not limited to): • A traumatic labour or birth including excessive tearing or bleeding • Pregnancy loss or stillbirths • Complications for the baby during or after delivery, such as injury or hemorrhage • Unplanned C-sections • Need for the baby to go to the NICU • Illness of the baby shortly after birth, or diagnoses of chronic conditions, illness, or disability • A history of abuse acting as a trigger for a traumatic response • Lack of support and reassurance during delivery, or feelings of powerlessness during the birth There is limited research available internationally, but it is estimated that upwards of 9% of women experience traumatic child delivery. Of that, 9 to 15% www.mumsmail.com
Symptoms of post-traumatic stress may include flashbacks and nightmares, irritability, recurrent and involuntary memories or thoughts about the birth, avoiding things that are associated with the birth or bring up memories of the event, and obsessing over anything relating to your child. Other symptoms could be anxiety, insomnia, irritability and feeling on edge, panic attacks, having a sense of detachment, difficulty breastfeeding and difficulty bonding with the baby. If a diagnosis of PTSD is to be made, the symptoms need to be present for one month after childbirth. There is a difference between this and postpartum depression, as well as other postpartum disorders. While it may feel difficult to talk about what you’re feeling and experiencing, communication with the obstetrician/ gynaecologist, midwife, or other professionals involved in your childbirth is essential so that you can get the help that is available. Options for treatment include medication (it’s best to see a specialist psychiatrist who 8
can work in conjunction with your other doctors where needed), psychotherapy, group support, and psycho-education. Parent-infant psychology is also a valuable avenue, and family sessions would also be beneficial to encourage support and understanding. If you or a loved one needs assistance, help is available at Akeso Pietermaritzburg. Akeso Pietermaritzburg offers specialist inpatient treatment and outpatient appointments for a range of psychiatric illnesses including anxiety and depression, dual diagnosis, eating disorders, ageing disorders, and post-traumatic stress disorder. They provide individual, integrated and familyoriented treatment. Call 087 098 0454, visit www.akeso.co.za, or email info@akeso.co.za. The Gift of Dyslexia Dyslexia and similar learning differences stem from innate patterns of thinking and learning that are associated with high levels of creativity and strong problem-solving and threedimensional thinking abilities.
People who develop dyslexia think in pictures, rather than words; they are imaginative and creative; and they try to solve problems by looking at the whole picture, rather than working step-by-step.
Davis Dyslexia Correction is a strength-based approach that harnesses the mental talents that dyslexic people share to overcome their learning problems. To do this, students must use different strategies than are commonly taught with remedial programmes. When dyslexic students recognise their mental talents,
they develop a renewed sense of self-esteem and confidence. When they start to employ study methods which capitalise on their talents, progress is very rapid. To find out more about dyslexia and the Davis approach, plus the book ‘The Gift of Dyslexia’ by Ronald D. Davis, check out www.dyslexia.com or e-mail Kathryn at logicallearningsolutions@ gmail.com.

Science Experiment: Balloon-Powered Car The Experiment: Build a car out of LEGO bricks, but leave an opening in the back of your car for your balloon jet. Give your car a little test drive to see how fast and how far it can go. Blow up the balloon and insert it into the hole at the back of your toy car, so that the bottom of the balloon is facing the rear of the car. Put the car down, let go of the balloon and watch it go! Check the distance with the tape measure.
Science Question: How does propulsion work? Rockets lift off with a principle called propulsion (or thrust). In this experiment, we will explore propulsion making out own ‘jet’ from a balloon to power a LEGO The Outcome: car! The car went further when it was propelled by the balloon. Supplies needed: • LEGO bricks Why it worked: • Balloons When you let go of the balloon, • Small tape measure air rushed out of it, causing www.mumsmail.com

the car to move in the opposite direction. It is propulsion. Rockets work in a similar way. Exhaust gas comes out of the rocket’s engine so fast that it propels the rocket up. Variation: Try racing your car on different surfaces. Does it go faster or slower on a rug? On a pavement? On a hill? Did you know? On average, every single person on earth owns 86 LEGO bricks!
