We are already talking about it in our house as we have to plan a few months in advance this year, due to a very special 80th birthday coming up for my father in law, in the UK. It will be wonderful to all be together again to celebrate, so lots to look forward to for us.

for ideas for Father’s Day, then read more in this issue... There are lots of interesting articles and ideas in this special ‘Father’s Day’ issue so please enjoy and feel free to email me at editor@mumsmail.com with any comments. We will even enter you into our ‘Reader’s Life’ competition where you will be in with a chance to win movie tickets and a Chateau Gateaux cake!

GRADES 1 - 12

June is a busy month of birthdays for me, Good luck! with all the special men in my life celebrating including my hubby and son, plus I’ll also be Victoria remembering my late father’s birthday. And xxx what with Father’s Day too, my husband always gets a fuss made of him every June. I will have to see what he wants to do this year for Father’s Day and his birthday but I’m sure his ideal day out would be a day out sailing or watching the rugby, so I will have to see what magic I can conjure up! He deserves a big spoil after being such a wonderful and supportive husband and father to our two children. If you’re looking PIETERMARITZBURG

Everyday Life

On Being a Dad It’s a wonderful feeling. It rushes through you from head to toe. It ejects love, adrenaline, confidence, knowledge, and pride into you and makes you an instant superhero. That’s the feeling of a parent the second their child is born. Nothing anyone can say to you can explain what happens when you become a dad – it is such an extraordinary event, truly lifechanging, that it is impossible to conceive in advance how it will affect you, how it will alter your mind and how it will expand your heart. I was overwhelmed with love and pride. It’s the kind of pride that only jumps into your body the second your child is born and it’s this newfound pride that stays with you from then onwards. I never knew this feeling existed and I never knew how beautiful it would feel to have this continuous feeling of pride. It’s empowering, it’s humbling, and it’s probably one of the best feelings any parent can have.

into you that quickly changes the way you manage your time, who you chose to hang around with and how you spend your money (ha ha!). Parenthood is extremely rewarding. Yes, some days will be long, and the nights even longer – dinner will probably only be eaten after 8pm, but it’s okay. What I have come to understand is that as much as you are learning how to be a parent, your baby is adapting to being in the outside world. Take it easy. Enjoy the happy mornings and stay calm through the cranky afternoons, listen to your parenting instincts, and support one another. Above all this, I have learned to love like I never thought possible.

Let’s go back to 15 December 2015 at 2:30pm – the moment our daughter came into the world. I will admit; I was nervous about becoming a father. So many questions… However, as Gia came into the world, all that nervousness went away immediately. It is a surreal feeling, a feeling of love beyond measure, a feeling so intense that it can’t be described or compared to anything else. As a husband and dad, I love wholeheartedly, I give my undivided attention, and I marvel at every moment of Gia’s life. As a child, I never had the kind of father that joined in on the adventure of growing up, the kind of father that gave his attention to us selflessly and who thrilled in the excitement of being young and carefree. I know what I needed back then, and that is how I view my parenting and the decisions I make for Gia. I have now been a dad for 30 whole months, and I have learned so many valuable lessons. By Don “The Don Father” Dinnematin, It is a wonderful thing how your little baby, www.thedonfather.co.za, www.facebook. who knows nothing about the big world com/thedonfathersa, www.instagram. can instil so much wisdom and realisation com/thedonfathersa. www.mumsmail.com

Save a Life and Donate Blood

June is Men’s Health Month

Every year on 14 June countries around the world celebrate World Blood Donor Day. The event serves to thank voluntary, unpaid blood donors for their life-saving gifts of blood and to raise awareness of the need for regular blood donations to ensure the quality, safety and availability of blood and blood products for patients in need. Transfusion of blood and blood products helps save millions of lives every year. It can help patients suffering from life-threatening conditions live longer and with a higher quality of life, and supports complex medical and surgical procedures.

The purpose of Men’s Health Month is to heighten the awareness of preventable health problems and encourage early detection and treatment of disease among men and boys.

South African National Blood Service Less than 1% of South Africans are active blood donors. A unit of blood only lasts 42 days after donation and, for this reason, it is important for blood donors to donate regularly. Donors can give blood as often as every eight weeks. Every unit of blood can save up to three lives as blood is separated into red blood cells, plasma and platelets. SANBS aims to collect 3000 units of blood per day to ensure a safe and sufficient blood supply in the health care system. The current blood supply is at only a few days left worth of stock (at the time of writing this), and they desperately need donors to donate – so make a difference this June and head to your nearest donor centre. To find your nearest blood donor centre, visit the SANBS website: www.sanbs.org.za.

Mental health: Why it matters for men Things happen in life, like difficulties with work or finances, the breakdown of a relationship, overwhelming family responsibilities, or a significant setback. These challenges can take a serious toll on your mental health, if left unchecked. Many men tough it out and struggle alone. Establishing and maintaining relationships, talking about the hard stuff in life and taking action when times are tough are proven ways for men stay mentally healthy and cope with the stress of everyday life. Good overall health and wellbeing is linked to not only better mental health but also reduces the likelihood of suicide. Some signs of poor mental health include feeling irritable, hopeless or worthless and behaviours such as aggression, drinking more than usual and isolating yourself from friends and family. Some ways to look after your mental health: • Do more of the things that make you feel great and help you to de-stress • Spend time with friends • Share what’s going on, especially if you’re feeling overwhelmed If you or someone you know are emotionally distressed or in crisis, the most important first step is to talk. Begin a conversation with a friend, family member, health professional or support service. Advice and effective tools are available. If you or someone you know is at risk, contact your local crisis or emergency services. Lifeline: 0861 322 322, Suicide Crisis Line: 0800 567 567, SADAG Mental Health Line: 011 234 4837. Diet Coke and Mentos Eruption

Smartie Party Planners We specialise in kiddies’ parties

One of the most popular experiments of modern times is the Diet Coke and Mentos Geyser. This experiment is loads of fun and sure to amaze your friends and family. What you’ll need: • Large bottle of Diet Coke • About half a pack of Mentos • Geyser tube (optional but makes things much easier) Instructions: • Make sure you are doing this experiment in a place where you won’t get in trouble for getting Diet Coke everywhere. Outside on some grass is perfect; please don’t use normal Coke as the sugar in it will create a huge sticky mess and don’t try this one in your family lounge!! • Stand the Diet Coke upright and unscrew the lid. Put some sort of funnel or tube on top of it so you can drop the Mentos in at the same time (about half the pack is a good amount). • Time for the fun part - drop the Mentos into the Diet Coke and run like mad! If you’ve done it properly a huge geyser of Diet Coke should come flying out of the bottle, it’s a very impressive sight. The record is about 9 metres high! What’s happening? Although there are a few different theories about how this experiment works, the most favoured reason is because of the combination of carbon dioxide in the Diet Coke and the little dimples found on Mentos candy pieces, which dramatically increases the surface area and allows a huge amount of bubbles to form. Galaxy Cakes Ingredients • 100g dark chocolate, chopped • 125g butter, chopped, at room temperature • 1 cup caster sugar • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract • 1 cup self-raising flour • 50g plain flour • 2 tablespoons cocoa powder • 2 eggs • 2 x 330g pkts store-bought royal icing • Purple, blue, pink and black food colouring, to tint • Edible glitter or silver shimmer dust, to decorate

mixture. Whisk flour mixture into chocolate mixture. Spoon into prepared cases. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes or until a skewer inserted in the centre of a cupcake comes out clean. Transfer to a wire rack to cool.

Method Preheat the oven to 160°C. Line twelve muffin pans with paper cases. Place chocolate, butter, sugar, vanilla and 160ml (2/3 cup) water in a saucepan. Stir over medium-low heat for 5 minutes or until smooth. Set aside at room temperature to cool. Sieve the flours and cocoa into a large bowl. Whisk eggs into the cooled chocolate

Dollop all four colours into the black icing and swirl gently with a skewer. Dip the top of each cupcake into the icing to coat, allowing the excess to drip back into the bowl. Return the cupcakes to the wire rack. Sprinkle with glitter or dust. Set aside for 20 minutes to allow the icing to set.

13

To make the icing, prepare royal icing following packet directions. Place half of the icing in a medium bowl and tint with black food colouring, stirring well to combine. Divide remaining icing among 4 small bowls. Tint with purple, blue and pink food colourings, leaving one portion white.
