Editor’s Life
Welcome to another Spring issue!
Goodness me, you can tell Spring is well and truly here! This is the time of year that I dread the most as I suffer from hay fever terribly, especially throughout September to November. But on the other hand, it is nice to have a few braai’s in the evenings again now, which I do love. As I was walking my little dog last night, on a lovely warm evening, after being in the office all day, I listened to the crickets and the cicadas and remembered how, when we used to go away on holiday, that sound always stood out to me when visiting hot countries. Since moving here from the UK, we are so used to these sounds and often don’t hear them, so it was such a lovely, peaceful reminder of the beautiful country that we are lucky enough to live in.
R60K more than last year! I’d like to say a massive ‘Thank You’ again to everyone who made this event possible, from all of the sponsors – small and large, to the fundraising team and my fabulous team at Mum’s Mail plus the many volunteers who generously gave of their time to help such an amazing charity. We are now starting to plan the PMB Ladies Breakfast in association with The Sunflower Fund for next year, which will be held in March 2018, so watch this space for more info…
We also have a new website due to launch in November, which we’re extremely excited about, plus a new online ‘gift emporium’, so For those of our readers who haven’t seen be on the lookout for more news about that! the news on our e-newsletters or Facebook and Instagram pages, we raised a staggering Have a wonderful November. Cover Star
Meet the Cover Star Our cute cover star this month is Kade Alexander Schütte (14 months) – son of Craig and Lisa Schütte from Hilton. Craig is an investment forester specialising in commercial timberland investment. Although Lisa is a qualified teacher, she decided to join Craig on the forestry side and run a home-based office dealing in timber trade and products. Kade is an incredibly friendly and fun-loving little boy. He is extremely adventurous and curious about EVERYTHING around him. Kade is assertive about where he wants to go and what he wants to do…. nobody should try and stop him from checking things out! He pokes, turns, twists and prods everything within his reach and is constantly trying to figure out how things work. His favourite place is in the garage with his dad and oupa. Here his play ranges from climbing the step ladder, tinkering with tools, to operating every piece of machinery he sets his eyes on (under his dad’s supervision of course). He has a favourite blue bunny blanket, his “doodoo”, which he takes with him everywhere….including into the garage. Craig loves holding Kade in his arms, particularly when he falls asleep. “Being a mom has not only rekindled the child in me, but I also laugh so much more now. Children are so funny! Having a child far outweighs any other joy in life. I had not realised how much I had been longing for someone to share this kind of relationship with. The love for a child is so unique. Being a mom is a real blessing and has brought purpose, joy and adventure to each new day,” concludes Lisa. Written by Sarah Mackintosh

Dr Des@home: Maternal Depression Moms who are depressed often suffer in silence, but this common illness can also take a heavy toll on their children. Chateau Gateaux
Chateau Gateaux Goes Green This year has been a big one for Chateau Gateaux – not only are they celebrating their 20th year, but they have also launched exciting new products such as their Chocolate Nostalgia, Baked Chocolate Cheesecake and Boston Brownie, plus they have an exciting new announcement! Chateau Gateaux has spent years working on a more eco-friendly box for their 24cm cakes, and finally they are proud to announce the launch of their new cardboard packaging! Up until now, they have used polystyrene packaging for their 24cm cakes and cases of individuals – mainly because it was the only product that could insulate the products sufficiently for long periods while being transported, and because of its strength. After years of brainstorming and countless tests, they finally managed to produce a cardboard equivalent that is even stronger and has good insulating properties!
many tests. The polystyrene had so many benefits and they had to surpass that. So it took two and a half years to develop, but it was worth it! Malcolm explained that it was hard to know where to start when they decided to go green, so they decided to start with their most “ecologically offensive” product, the polystyrene. They are also working on finding eco-friendly straws, so watch this space!
The new box features double insulation and a coating that makes it waterproof, it is food friendly and recyclable. The double bottom provides added insulation and it is specially designed to stop air getting in. All these features are essential as these cakes are transported great distances and the cakes need to remain fresh. The box went through eight months of testing to ensure that all According to Malcolm Lyle, a director and these claims are true! co-owner of Chateau Gateaux, they first launched the 18cm box in cardboard when “Most organisations see the packaging they launched the cakes into stores as they problem as too big to fix, so they do nothing. needed a cheaper and greener option. LOOKING AFTER OUR ENVIRONMENT
In the interests of caring for the environment, Château Gâteaux has commenced a programme to eliminate as many environmentally damaging packaging material elements as is possible and practical. Eliminating polystyrene was the obvious first task given the large quantities used in packaging our products.
All polystyrene has now been replaced with 100% recyclable and biodegradable materials. Our new packaging has been designed and tested to deliver the equivalent insulation and protective properties of polystyrene.

Kids’ Life
A Father’s Influence didn’t understand where to start? It was a tough pill for me to swallow. I often lay awake in bed trying to figure this whole thing out. My wife helped a great deal with this! She instilled direction, and inspiration into my heart and soul. She helped me realise that I didn’t need a male role model to look up to or to learn from, all I needed was to believe in myself and know that we are not always handicapped by our past. I realised that whatever I went through as a child with my father, was an opportunity for me to know how I didn’t want to father my children. My wife gave me hope and excitement because for the first time I knew exactly how I was going to tackle this role. I became centred into a space that gave me peace with my past and pure joy at what the future holds, she believed in me and gave me the same confidence to believe in myself.
In that moment, when this little life first comes into the world, you can’t help but become emotional. I cried big tears; I was overwhelmed with love and pride. The kind of pride that only jumps into your body the second your child is born and it’s this newfound pride that stays with you from then onwards.
Dads, you are hugely influential in the eyes of your children. Don’t be content with the fact that you’re simply a dad. Instead, challenge yourself to become a dad who is a force in the lives of your wife and children. You might think that you have a complete lack of influence in your personal or professional life, but the day you become a father, all of that changes. As far as they are concerned, you are the most influential man in the world. Your role as a father has a huge impact on their entire life. They look up to you and want to make you proud. Make them proud by being 100% present.
I never knew this feeling existed and I never knew how beautiful it would feel to have this continuous feeling of pride. It’s empowering, it’s humbling and it’s probably one of the Never forget that it is not only your children best feelings any parent can have. who need you, your wife also needs you, My wife and I had always known we wanted more than you realise. Teaching Your Children How to Save
Umg
To avoid the next generation making bad financial decisions and to help them enjoy financially fit lives, children need to be taught the essentials about money. If you are a parent, here are a few simple ways to teach your children about saving money: Get a piggy bank This form of savings is more meaningful for younger children who can’t add or count too well. Keep the savings visible: try an old jam jar as a savings mechanism and allow them to even draw pictures to illustrate what they are saving for. Take them to a bank to open their account This helps youngsters understand where their money is going and introduces them to the concept of financial institutions. In doing so, you help your child prioritise short-term and long-term savings. Model good spending and saving habits As parents, you have the biggest influence on the way children save or spend. Examine your own spending habits: next time you dash out to get the latest designer handbag or shoes, ask what message you are really sending to your impressionable children. Show them the money We have to remember that children today don’t see cash and financial transactions the same way we saw them when we were growing up, so we have to consciously make sure that children understand cash as the basis for learning more about money later. When giving children an allowance or income, give the money in denominations that encourage saving. For example if the amount is R50, give out five R10 notes and encourage that at least one be set aside for savings. Smartie Party Planners We specialise in kiddies’ parties
PS 0133183 Pr. No. 0648078
Children love birthday parties and something to take home is an extra treat. If you’re looking for something a bit different from the traditional party bag, why not try these fabulous ideas. Paint a picture Painting a picture is a great activity for the children at your party, and better still, they can take the picture home with them as a memento of the fun they’ve had. Make a sock puppet Children love sock puppets, so why not have them make their own? Some funky socks and colourful bits and bobs (and lots of googly eyes!) to decorate them with are all you need, and you’ve got a fun activity and a party memento that didn’t cost you a fortune. Fairy cake kit A ‘cake in a jar’ kit is a great idea for a party favour. Simply pop into jam jars, measure out the dry ingredients into the jar and write on the outside what else they’ll need to add. Finally, decorate with a ribbon. Art supplies A little pack of felt tips, a small colouring book, a mini art gift set - anything artistic is great for children, who can take this home and then get stuck in on a rainy ‘I’m bored’ Sunday. Grow your own plants A packet of seeds, or a ‘grow your own plant’ kit from the supermarket, is a fun activity for your guests to take away with them. Unlike traditional party bag fillers, it’s a useful gift that your guest is going to see the benefits of. This one is better for older children. Source: www.netmums.com. 13

DIY Galaxy Jar Supplies: • Clear glass bottle with a lid • Cotton balls – lots and lots of cotton balls Stockists of: Party Decorations, Baking • Glitter • Food dye and Goods, Wedding Accessories, Polystyrene & Foil Containers, Plastic Packets & Gift water Bags, Serviettes & a whole lot more! • Glow in the dark paint How to make galaxy jars: • Fill your bottle half-full with cotton balls. Compress the cotton balls – they will fill the lower inch of the bottle when you are finished. • Pour some water into the bottle, enough to saturate the cotton balls. • Drip two to three drops of food colouring into your bottle. Add a squirt of glow paint and a dash of glitter. • Then – do it all again! Add more cotton balls, more water, more glitter and glowy juice. • As the layers grow it gets harder and harder to fill the jar. Using a stiff straw to tamper the cotton balls back down into their layer helps. • Keep adding new colours and new layers until your bottle is completely full. Put the lid on your bottle securely. As your bottle ages, you will want to rehydrate the cotton balls to keep the blurred “sky look”. • Set the bottle on your windowsill to allow the glow paint to charge. As your kids drift to sleep they will see a sky, including a glittery milky way looking back at them, from their galaxy bottle. These make great gifts for your kids’ friends and it’s a great way to upcycle glass jars and bottles. Source: www.kidsactivitiesblog.com. www.mumsmail.com
