Taryn was diagnosed with breast cancer in March 2014. “Although it was overwhelming in the beginning, being told what lay ahead of me – a double mastectomy, chemotherapy and radiation – I have never said the words ‘why me?’ Right from the very beginning I saw how my diagnosis, as a young, fit woman of 36 affected the lives of those around me. I somehow knew this had happened to me for a reason and I hoped that people’s lives would be changed in a positive way because of it. Little did I realise just how much mine would change!”

Family Matters: Emotional Intelligence

Accounting ServiceS Professional Accounting and Bookkeeping Services for individuals and small businesses in Pietermaritzburg.

Last year I was privileged to attend a seminar on emotional intelligence, also known as EQ. Growing up all we ever heard about was IQ. Today many organisations who previously only looked for IQ in candidates now want a balance between IQ and EQ. So in brief what is EQ? EQ can be described as that part of our make-up that either reacts or responds to situations or stimuli. By reaction we mean emotions that are out of control and lead to further disharmony or destruction. Just the other day I read of two brothers who were tragically gunned down after an altercation over a parking space. By response we mean an ability to remain objective and therefore see a constructive outcome.

Funeral directors are called to practise healthy emotional intelligence amidst times of heightened emotions. It is not uncommon for those in grief to lash out at those who are there to help them. The good news is that we do not have to continue to be victims of our emotions or emotionally abuse others. A simple formula that one can consider when we feel we are going to lose control is to pause then take time to ponder. This will give you the ability to prepare before proceeding. By Dallas Gilbert. Montagu Dried Fruit & Nuts

Mango, Mango! What would Summer be without a delicious mango or two or three? Fresh or dried, everyone agrees, mangoes are delicious. If you are always on the run throughout the day, dried mangoes are a quick and convenient snack, and also a preferred energy source to processed foods. Just make sure you check your portion sizes, because as good as they are, dried mangoes are high in sugar. The calories and carbohydrates in dried mangoes are much more concentrated than in fresh mangoes. One-third cup dried mango contains 160 calories, most of which consists of carbohydrates. This is why dried mangoes are a good source of energy that provides your body with fuel for your daily tasks. A third of a cup of dried mangoes contains 40 grams of carbohydrates, two grams of fibre and 32 grams of sugar. The natural

sugar in mangoes is a preferred energy source, while the fibre content supports your digestive tract. If you have diabetes or problems with your blood sugar, dried mangoes is not a healthy choice for you because of the high sugar content. Mangoes are a good source of vitamin A, which plays a role in the growth of cells, healthy vision and a strong immune system. Although not very high in minerals, dried mangoes contain small amounts of iron and calcium. Iron is important for oxygen in the blood and oxygen storage in muscle tissue, while calcium helps to maintain bone strength and density and keeps your heart, muscles and nerves functional. Montagu Dried Fruit and Nuts have a fantastic mango special this Summer and they pride themselves in providing top quality dried fruit, nut and seed products. NLP: A Breakthrough All Students Have Been Waiting For Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) is the integration of Neurology, Psychology, Linguistics, Cybernetics and System Theories. It is an internationally acclaimed revolutionary scientific education system to help students optimise and maximise their learning potential. When a student’s energy levels are low, they operate on a low frequency or vibration. When operating on these low frequencies/vibrations, anxiety sets in creating an emotional discharge which has an adverse effect on their studying patterns. Once anxiety sets in, fear and worry follow suit and this then leads to stress and depression.

Setting History Free

Gone are the days of dusty museums housing collections of “Do Not Touch” specimens and fossils, displays of stuffed animals, and pre-historic stone tools. The Old Prison Museum in Pietermaritzburg, where the entire building itself is an artefact, reflects the innovative ways in which history is being communicated. Built in 1863, this two-storey rectangular structure of 300m2 has become an interactive centre that tells the story of the nation. Cape Townbased interactive design agency Formula D Interactive creates museum experiences that are engaging, inspire reflection, and promote community activity. Formula D has used a mix of technology and design – combining the latest technology, graphic, multimedia, and exhibition design to upgrade and create cutting edge museum displays and events at The Old Prison Museum in Pietermaritzburg.

of eras, beginning with the “Colonial” and ending with the contemporary world, titled the “Freedom Era”. The different eras not only reflect the passage of history, but also the shifts in power and the use of the prison. While the old prison, which stopped operating in 1987, was being transformed, more details about previous prisoners emerged, including the fact that President Nelson Mandela spent a night there after being arrested outside Howick. The next stage of the project will be to convert the top floor into a research and library centre where visitors will be able to investigate issues in greater detail. The museum is expected to play an important role in attracting a larger number of tourists visiting the region.

The design follows a chronological sequence, which is divided into a number

Kids’ Life/Party Life

The learn-to-swim season has just got under way in the Pietermaritzburg area. Sunny skies, warmer days and heated pools equal a good Summer! Swimmers who commenced lessons in August/September are set to make the most of the South African Summer by being ready to enjoy home pools during the Summer months.

Why your kid should take karate: » self-defence » Fitness, physical & mental strength » Co-ordination » self-discipline & selfconfidence » healthy spirit of competitiveness » assistance in developing in other sports » social network of likeminded individuals » Fun

Swimming should be fun! All parents want peace of mind that their children are water safe. “My aim is to promote and nurture a love for the water. My swimmers are not only taught to swim, but also given an understanding of the rules of pool safety. Not all swimmers will be world champions, but my motto is to make every swimmer the best that they can be!” said Odette Randelhoff of Seals Swimming Club. “Drownings still represent a huge percentage of deaths in our province. Most of these fatalities could be avoided if parents and child minders enrolled their children in learn-to-swim classes at an early age.” Odette went on to say that if every person behaved responsibly around every pool at all times, the number of accidents would be greatly reduced. Odette, twice finalist for SA Swim Teacher of the Year, is firm in her belief that swim teachers need to mix their passion for what they do with true professionalism. “We have a responsibility to our clients to be qualified, registered and accredited. Parents and child minders are urged to ensure that they do their homework in choosing their swimming teacher. Make sure that your teacher is qualified and is currently registered with Swimming South Africa (SSA).”
