Ttrumpet: Bringing the Community Together To Combat Crime Crime rates are always a concern and according to the Crime Stats SA 2016 report there were 7 600 crimes that were reported in Pietermaritzburg area, which given the size of the community, is certainly troublesome. However, every community has a role to play in reducing crime. With so many citizens witnessing and experiencing incidents almost daily in their city – imagine the sheer volume and content that can be generated. One of the best ways to garner this information is through crowdsourcing, which involves engaging and enabling citizens to actively take a part in the fight against crime by reporting suspicious activities or crime in real-time and in a convenient and accessible way using their smartphones. And this is exactly what the ttrumpet app does.

“INSPIRING TEACHERS OF YOUNG CHILDREN”

TO AVOID DISAPPOINTMENT REGISTER NOW FOR 2017

Any resident in Pietermaritzburg who downloads the free ttrumpett app, will be able to record crime incidents in their area and become a far more active medium in the ongoing fight against crime. Suspicious activity can be reported via the ‘Pietermaritzburg Crime Channel’. Each ttrumpet security channel connects individuals in real-time and syndicates information that enables the community to empower themselves when it comes to keeping themselves and their families safe. What’s more, ttrumpet is also currently engaging with the Community Police Forums (CPFs) to come on board as well. The community can help the police combat crime in the area and residents can also help identify hotspots, be more vigilant and be on the lookout to assist police.

Calombaris is passionate about getting youngsters to cook. “I want all kids to understand where ingredients come from, how they are grown, respect the earth and respect the animal that has sacrificed their life for us. We as adults need to look after the youth and make sure we show them the way, guide them and inspire them to love and respect food,” says George.

Down Syndrome Awareness National Down Syndrome Day is observed on 20 October. Down syndrome is a genetic condition that typically causes some level of learning disability and characteristic physical features. Many babies born with Down syndrome are diagnosed with the condition after birth and are likely to have: • Reduced muscle tone leading to floppiness (hypotonia) • Eyes that slant upwards and outwards • A small mouth with a protruding tongue • A flat back of the head • Below-average weight and length at birth.

Improves sleep patterns • Full Body Massage • Back, Neck & Scalp Massage • Leg & Foot Massage • Indian Head Massage

callymassage@gmail.com

What causes Down syndrome? Down syndrome is caused by the presence of an extra chromosome 21 in a baby’s cells. In the vast majority of cases, this isn’t inherited and is simply the result of a oneoff genetic change in the sperm or egg. Life with Down syndrome Although there is no “cure” for Down syndrome, there are ways to help children with the condition develop into healthy and fulfilled individuals who are able to achieve the level of independence right for them. This includes: • Access to good healthcare, including a range of different specialists. • Early intervention programmes to provide support for children and parents. • Good parenting skills and an ordinary family life. • Education and support groups to provide information and help for parents, friends and families. • Improved education and support has led to more opportunities for people with Down syndrome. These include being able to leave home, form new relationships, gain employment and lead largely independent lives. If you would like more information about Down syndrome, you can contact Trudy Chetty, founder of non-profit organisation, You’re Magical – created to assist people with Down syndrome and their families. Local Businesses Make a Difference

Angel’s Care Centre and Howick community recently received over 150 Wonderbags to support social and economic upliftment of those most in need, sponsored by Wonderbag and The Digital Media Consultancy (TDMC). Solutions as simple as the locally manufactured Wonderbag have the ability to have tremendous impact on social issues. Promoted as a living “recipe for change”, Wonderbag operates in multiple countries around the world to empower and inspire impoverished women and their families to combat the physical, economic and environmental impacts of unhealthy cooking.

Wonderbags were donated to the Angel’s Care Centre to assist their feeding programme, as well as to the parents of the children. This is particularly valuable for this impoverished community, as by using a Wonderbag three to four times a week, each home can save up to 30% on their monthly energy costs, cut cooking time in half, and families are at a lower risk of injury and disease caused by fumes, smoke and fire typically used to cook. The community also enjoyed a ‘Wonderfeast’ sponsored by TDMC.

Angel’s Care Centre is a pillar of strength within the Howick community. It has a pre-school, a bridging class for children who have never had the chance to attend school, an aftercare programme, a weekly feeding programme for over 300 children, as well as a crisis centre for children who are victims of gender-based violence. Being Mom Many a day is spent in the hub-bub of life, school, dishes, food and extra murals… I think my littlest people are forgotten in the busyness of reality. I think back to when I had just one three-year-old. We’d hang the washing together then finger paint or draw, read and count then play together in the park. I knew that he was receiving a ton of stimulation and his mommy tank was full.

Add more children, more washing, more food and mommy can only stretch so far. Suddenly you notice that the littlest people are not having swimming lessons, being pushed on a swing for hours or having nearly as many stories read to them. The self-accusing guilt then creeps in. The guilt that we’re not giving and doing enough. The guilt that they will be behind because of my inadequacy to provide the many toys, games and stimulation activities that our culture insists upon.

In the midst of this turmoil, in a desperate attempt to see that I’m meeting everyone’s needs, I tell my three-year-old that each of us would do something with her during the day, she just needed to tell us what she wanted to do. And guess what? Her list wasn’t what my guilt-ridden imagination thought she needed – it was simply to bake biscuits, build a puzzle, play with playdough, pick flowers and stroke the dog.

Carbon Dioxide Balloons Supplies needed: • Spoon • 2 Teaspoons (10g) baking soda • Balloon • 1/3 cup (90ml) white vinegar • Old water bottle The experiment: Using the spoon, put the baking soda into the balloon. Pour the vinegar into the bottle until it’s about one-third full. Keeping the baking soda in the body if the balloon, stretch the mouth over the bottle’s opening. Then dump the baking soda from the balloon onto the bottle. The outcome: As the vinegar and baking soda mix, a gas – carbon-dioxide – is created. It is a byproduct of vinegar and baking soda reacting together, and the balloon blows up. Why it worked: The vinegar is acetic acid, and the baking soda is a base – the opposite pH to an acid. When they mix, it causes a reaction and carbonic acid is formed, separating into babbles of carbon dioxide (CO2) and water. The Co2 has nowhere to go except up into the balloon, causing it to inflate. Variation: Change the temperature of your vinegar, making it hotter or colder, and see if that affects the speed at which your balloon grows.

Try this! Bounce your balloon. Does it bounce as easily as a regular airfilled balloon? The CO2 gas is heavier than air. Helium is lighter than air, making balloons filled with that gas float.
