Everyday Life

What a wonderful climate we have here, and it’s all year round! Whilst it’s grey and wet in the UK, even in the summer, the sun seems to always shine here and that’s one of the reasons I love it so much! There is so much to do, so many places to go and good times to be had – you just have to go out there and find them (once you’ve looked through our fantabulous magazine first for ideas and inspiration!) The Arthurs took a trip along the Midlands Meander last weekend and had a fantastic day out – the scenery up there is stunning.

As I write this, we are preparing for the 11th Annual Mum’s Mail High Tea in Association with The Sunflower Fund and this year’s theme is ‘Shaken, Not Stirred’. As ever, the wonderful Alice Leah has been instrumental in the organising of this much anticipated, sold out event, which takes place on Friday 2nd September at Durban’s Greyville Convention Centre, with the aim of raising funds and awareness for The Sunflower Fund. I am really looking forward to helping raise lots of money on the day and am especially looking forward to seeing what’s in the goodie bags!

Local Mom on a Mission Chrissie Van Niekerk has taken her background as an ECD educator and is sharing it with the parents and children in Sweetwaters. “As my three kids started getting older I realised that I wanted to raise them to understand that we need to care for those around us, not only those in our immediate family, but also our neighbours down the road. That’s why I started volunteering again,” says Chrissie. “I was so privileged to be selected as a Vodacom Change the World Volunteer, which has allowed me to work full-time with iThemba Projects, an organisation that does youth mentoring and Early Childhood Development work in Sweetwaters near Pietermaritzburg. I have been able to help them launch the opening of a new preschool, as well as starting a home-based Early Childhood Development (ECD) mentoring programme. This really excites me, because it involves meeting with other moms in the community who don’t have the resources that I had when I was at home with my kids. Mentors meet with them and teach them how to stimulate and interact with their kids at home, so their kids have a good ECD foundation.” “It’s so important that I do this work, not only for the moms and kids in Sweetwaters, but for my own kids as well. They are able to see that the families in Sweetwaters also are important and special, just like our own family.

What is Occupational Therapy? Gwen Reddy, an Occupational Therapist practising for almost two decades, is also a trained Neurodevelopmental Therapist and Vision Therapist. She has a special interest in learning disability, developmental delays, Cerebral Palsy, Autism, teenage psychiatry and sensory disorders. She works with all age groups (adults and children) with physical, neurological, psychiatric, and developmental disorders and conducts functional and medico-legal assessments. Occupational Therapy (OT) is the therapeutic use of work, self-care and play activities to increase development and prevent disability. It assists children with physical, sensory, or cognitive difficulties to be functionally independent and successful at tasks. OT focuses on ‘daily living skills’. A child’s occupation is play, schoolwork and functional activities such as dressing. Children who will benefit from Occupational Therapy may have: • Autism, cerebral palsy, attention deficit disorder, delayed milestones, epilepsy or any condition impacting on a child’s ability

to function. • Fine motor difficulties such as incorrect pencil grasp, poor handwriting, difficulty cutting, colouring, slow pace of work. • Difficulties with gross motor tasks such as balance, ball play, jumping, hopping etc. • Poor postural stability - tires easily, head on the desk, struggles to sit upright, fatigue of the large muscle of the arms and legs. • School difficulties that obstruct learning. Reversals of letters and numbers, disorganised work, poor planning, difficulty recalling the alphabet and poor copying of written work is evident. • Unusual reactions to certain textures, tastes or movement. “Our family has benefited from the services of an OT and we can honestly say it has changed our lives for the better. We recommend you talk to one if you are worried about your child’s development,” says Victoria Arthur of Mum’s Mail. Contact Gwen Reddy: 092 455 9163, 033 – 387 3815, reddygwen@gmail.com.

Solutions to Winter Hair Problems

www.sanbs.org.za 0800 11 9031 Improves sleep patterns

The colder winter months can really wreak havoc on our hair. Here are some winter hair evils and how to fix them.

Reduces hyperactivity Vital for brain development

Dull Hair The winter months can be particularly hard on your hair, causing it to lose colour and become dull and dry, especially for those with dyed hair. Solution: You can use a deep conditioner that will moisturise and rehydrate your hair, or you can visit your salon and get your hair dyed in a beautiful rich colour. Ask your hairdresser for Olaplex, which will repair your damaged hair and prevent further damage.

Static When the temperatures drop, there is less moisture in the air and the dry air causes static, making your hair stand up and a nightmare to keep in form. Solution: Hydrate your hair with a good shampoo and conditioner, and avoid heat styling devices such as a curling iron or straightener. Rather use an ionic hair dryer which doesn’t deplete your hair of moisture. The ions produced by an ionic hair dryer also help reduce static electricity.

072 248 0008

Itchy Scalp The cold, dry air lacks moisture and being inside where it is heated also affects your scalp – leaving it dry and itchy. This can also lead to dandruff. Solution: First and foremost, don’t scratch – this will just cause more damage and more dandruff. Use a product called Scalpicin which will help alleviate the itchiness. Try not to use too much shampoo too often as it has chemicals that can dry out your scalp. Instead to counteract the dryness, use a cleansing conditioner that moisturises and hydrates your hair and scalp. Source: Alex Mitchley. www.mumsmail.com

Homeschooling: Is it for You?

As parents, we always want to give our children the best so that they are able to reach their full potential and live their lives to the full. Therefore, from day one, we are busy researching the best schools.

If you are standing at this crossroad today, I’d like to encourage you to hop over to our blog to find out a bit more or attend the KZN Homeschooling Expo being held on 10 Then life happens… Your child clashes with the September at Red Point Church in Pinetown, system, homework owns you, teachers start for only R20 per family entry fee. saying your child needs medication or your child is streaks ahead and their school day is pure drudgery. And you thinking; “There must be another way.” 14 years ago we found ourselves at this crossroad and we chose to take the path less travelled and homeschool our children.

Looking back, as hard as it was, I would not change that choice for anything! I always say there are pros and cons to formal and home education, but I can do something about the homeschool cons. In a nut shell, homeschooling offers a child a tailor-made education that meets a child where they are at and so allows them the freedom to become

Aquamad Survival Swimming Programme Tori Karg de Almeida, owner of Aquamad Swim School in Howick, has been teaching swimming in the Midlands since 1999. This year she underwent intensive training to become one of only a handful of qualified Infant Survival Swim Specialists in SA. In this survival swimming programme she teaches babies and toddlers the most efficient and effective way to self-rescue if they find themselves in the water alone. They learn to become “aquatic problem solvers”. A six to twelve month old baby would learn to roll over and float for an indefinite time or until help arrives.

On completion of both programs, swimmers will undergo a ‘Test Out’ whereby they are fully clothed and will be tested in various ways to ensure that each time the result is positive and they are able recover and to float safely. Once a child is walking they will go straight into the Swim-Float-Swim programme whereby they will learn to go from a float back to a swim, enabling them to swim towards the wall or the steps.

“I feel so privileged to have this knowledge and am thrilled to be able to offer this programme right here in the Midlands. It’s simple - my desire to continue learning stems from my passion to teach swimming.” says Tori.

Exploding Baggies

REPTILE PARTY TIME

This is a fun, easy and affordable science experiment to try at home, or you could even do it as an activity at a science-themed party! Supplies needed: • 1/3 cup (80ml) white vinegar • 1 zipper-lock bag • 10 drops food colouring • Clothes peg • 2 tablespoons (28g) baking soda

• School Educationals • Birthday Parties • Identification & Awareness Courses • Events & Fundraisers

Dean 074 885 7651

reptilepartytime@yahoo.com www.reptilepartytime.co.za

Find us on Facebook!

The experiment: Pour the vinegar into the bag and add a few drops of food colouring. Twist the plastic above the liquid, and hold the twist secure with a clothes peg. Now, above the clothes peg, add the baking soda and close the bag’s zipper. Take off the clothes peg and let the vinegar drop into the bag. Shake it and watch the reaction. The outcome: The bag blows up like a balloon.

Why it worked: When baking soda and vinegar mix together, it causes a reaction that creates gas. Gas molecules take up more space than the liquid and the solid do, which is why the bag expands.
