Annual Women in Business Luncheon More than 350 women gathered at the Royal Showgrounds in August for the annual Women in Business luncheon. One of the Pietermaritzburg Chamber of Business’ signature events, the day belonged to women who were wowed by Stacey-Lee Bolon, head of innovation at FNB Business Banking, and whooped with delight at performance artist LeeAnn Dlamini, the woman behind the #endgirlhate campaign. East Coast Radio presenter Darren Maule pulled no punches and had the audience in stitches with his comedic routine, adding laughter to the fun-filled event. PCB CEO Melanie Veness thanked the following sponsors: FNB, Liberty Midlands Mall, The Witness, CHC, Colenbrander, and Mancosa. Woman of the World Spring Lunch: Making a Difference One Woman at a Time The St Anne’s Old Girls’ Guild invites all interested women to their Women of the World Spring Lunch on 7 September, from 12pm at St Anne’s Diocesan College. Tickets cost R350 per person and a portion of funds raised will be donated to the Care Bear Project. There will be fantastic lucky draw prizes, plus you will be inspired by guest speaker Devi Govender – an award-winning journalist. For bookings contact Alison on aascough@stannes.co.za or 033 – 343 6100.

Take the butter-like voice of James Taylor that made famous songs like Carolina on My Mind, You Can Close Your Eyes, Sweet Baby James, Fire and Rain and Never Die Young and contrast it with the soulful, rich voice of Carole King in songs like So Far Away, Natural Woman, You’ve got a Friend and Will you Still Love Me Tomorrow. The result is a mellow, emotional journey through the lives of these two friends and lovers, their music and their madness. Brought to you by Dave Starke and Too Bit Mac, the show promises to be a powerful examination of these two timeless singers. The show starts at 2pm and the venue opens 90 minutes before the show for drinks. Tickets cost R150 per person or R130 per pensioner. Book at Computicket or e-mail Roland on roland@stansell.za.net.

Cover Star

Meet the Cover Star Our cute cover star this month is Hlelokuhle Snaluthando Mtshali (1 year, 2 months). His parents are Melisizwe Sihle Mtshali and Nosisa Mtshali, and they live in Pietermaritzburg. Melisizwe is a Project Management Technologist at the Department of Water and Sanitation and Nosisa is a senior finance officer for the KZN Gaming and Betting Board. Hlelokuhle’s mom says he’s a happy soul, always smiling - he’s friendly and adorable. He loves taking a bath and water play, playing ball around the house and enjoys watching the birds in the sky and planes taking off from the Oribi airport. “He’s always climbing on everything he can reach – like the couch and beds. He might grow to become a hiker,” laughs Nosisa. “We love chilling in our living room, just watching him play on his colourful mat, having all his toys there. We might watch one or two

cartoon movies with him too!” On parenthood, Melisizwe and Nosisa have this to say: “We love the feeling of knowing that we have a responsibility to raise someone and to watch him progress every step of the way. Having that thrill of fulfilment when we come home from our busy days and knowing that we have this precious soul to take care of.” “The sleepless nights do take their toll sometimes but every moment is priceless from watching them trying to adapt to the new world, outside the comfort of mommy’s tummy and their first nappy change, to the headache of turning your house into a pharmacy because you can’t bear to watch them fall sick. Plus their attempt at learning how to crawl but the best moment is when they take those first steps.” Written by Sarah Mackintosh

Smile like Everyone is Watching! Dentists are in the business of maintaining and fixing people’s smiles. Whether it be a simple restorative filling or root canal treatment or a brand new crown, most patients are a little nervous visiting their dentist. That’s the importance of starting dental visits from a very young age.

We need to encourage our young kids, and their parents to start regular dental visits early to help educate them on the importance of good oral care, as well as alleviate future dental anxiety, which is worse. Once afraid, patients can sometimes wait too long to do anything for their teeth – and when they finally seek treatment it is too late for the dentist to help.

Dr Des@Home: When was Your Last Pap test? Patients often want to know which tests they can do to pick up cancer. The answer is simple: start with doing your monthly breast examination and yearly Pap test. Women 39 years and older can add a mammogram, and women over 50 can have a colonoscopy to rule out colon cancer. This month is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month. Cervical cancer is the third most common cancer and the fourth leading cause of death in women worldwide. The primary cause of this cancer is infection with human papillomavirus (HPV). Since cervical cancer is usually asymptomatic in the early stages, screening is important. It is one of the few cancers that can be easily detected at pre-malignancy phase. The screening test, which is known as the Pap test, is an effective method for early detection. During a Pap test, cells from the mouth of the cervix are collected with a brush, saved

and sent off to the pathology laboratory. The pathologist can pick up pre-malignant cells, HPV, bacterial and fungal elements. The treatment needed for abnormal cervical cell changes depends on whether you have mild, moderate or severe changes. Many women with mild changes don’t need treatment as the changes go back to normal on their own. This is usually confirmed by repeating the test after three months. For moderate to severe changes, your gynaecologist will do a biopsy during a procedure called colposcopy. LLETZ stands for large loop excision of the transformation zone. It’s also known as loop electrosurgical excision (LEEP) or loop diathermy. This is the most common treatment for abnormal cervical cells. It is a small procedure that can save your life! At the end of the programme it was evident that parents displayed three qualities: Consciousness: Parents had a clearer understanding of their role in education and the benefits of their involvement. Competence/Self-efficacy: Parents were taking active control of their own level of empowerment by implementing strategies that they were exposed to during the programme. Self-determination: The level of empowerment became evident as parents started asking questions and gave each other advice on how to deal with problems encountered during their own involvement practices. “For education to truly flourish in South Africa, it is not just up to our educators to make the difference. Chocolate Owl Cake Idea

Smartie Party Planners We specialise in kiddies’ parties

A fun chocolate birthday cake decorated with buttons, biscuits and marzipan – bound to be a hit with young children! You will need to bake a square (18cm) and a round (20cm) chocolate cake, and make enough chocolate icing to cover both cakes. To assemble, place the round cake on a large wooden board or tray (the cake will need to be served on this). Place the round cake tin on the square cake about 12cm from one edge and cut around the edge of the tin. Remove the smaller piece and place at one end of the round cake to represent the ears. Using the remains of the square cake cut almost in half to give an oblong (for the fence) and a semi-circle (for the wings). Place the oblong at the bottom of the owl cake. Slice the semi-circle in half horizontally through the middle. Arrange one piece each side of the round cake to make the wings. Spread the butter icing all over the cake.

Sweet 16 Party Games

If a DJ isn’t in your plans, there are still plenty of sweet sixteen games that you can play with your guests. Here are some ideas for sweet sixteen party games to make your birthday bash the most memorable event of the year! Lie Detector For this sweet sixteen party game, pass out a piece of paper and pen to each of your guests. Have them write down three facts on the paper. Two of the facts must be truthful and one of the facts must be a lie. The lie can be as silly, outrageous, or as believable as you want it to be. Then, go around the group and have each person read off their facts. The rest of the group must then try and guess which of their facts is the lie! This is a great game to play prior to any of the other activities because it lightens the mood and gets everyone talking and laughing.

skills. Some great songs to play are Sixteen Candles by Jackson 5, Happy Birthday by Stevie Wonder and Sweet Sixteen by Beyoncé. Of course, you can also have songs by your favourite performers. Balloon Truth or Dare This is another fun sweet 16 game for your party. Before the party starts, write out 10 truth questions and 10 dares each on small index cards. Carefully place the card inside each balloon and then blow them up. During the party, each guest can take a turn popping a balloon and either answering a truth question or completing the dare.
