Family Matters: Emotional Intelligence Last year I was privileged to attend a seminar on emotional intelligence, also known as EQ. Growing up all we ever heard about was IQ. Today many organisations who previously only looked for IQ in candidates now want a balance between IQ and EQ. So in brief what is EQ? EQ can be described as that part of our make-up that either reacts or responds to situations or stimuli.

The good news is that we do not have to continue to be victims of our emotions or emotionally abuse others. A simple formula that one can consider when we feel we are going to lose control is to pause then take time to ponder. This will give you the ability to prepare before proceeding. By Dallas Gilbert.

B.O.N

B.O.N Natural Oils Kim Pech tells how she and her husband Jarrett began B.O.N “My husband Jarrett and I started our married life by resigning from our jobs, leaving Johannesburg and buying a farm outside Richmond in KwaZulu-Natal. We went from slick Jo’burg lives to rustic farm living. Jarrett took over a third generation family business producing eucalyptus oil in bulk quantities for the pharmaceutical industry. Our new friends and neighbours, who were very interested in our business, kept asking for small bottles of oil to try at home. So began the idea of a retail product range. A few years later, when I was pregnant with our first child, Stephen, I asked Jarrett to create a tissue oil for me with natural oils that would be safe, nourishing, and would really work.

used the blends throughout my pregnancy and by the time Stephen was born we had a product we loved and trusted. Our Liquid Gold Pure Tissue Oil was born. It’s amazing to think that from our factory in Hilton, we now produce more than a ton of Pure Tissue Oil every month for customers all over the world. We have grown our natural range to a full range of skincare products. Most recently we launched B.O.N Natural Baby range which consists of a 100% Natural Baby Wash and Baby cream.

Since launching seven years ago, what makes us happiest is the thousands of testimonials we receive from satisfied customers. Being able to offer affordable, natural products that really work, is what Jarrett ordered various oils which he drives us more than anything else.” blended in our kitchen. Montagu

The Alpha and Omega-3 of a Healthy Diet for Your Child You often hear people talk about the importance of omega-3 in a healthy diet, but just what is omega-3? In short, it refers to polyunsaturated fatty acids that are essential for optimal health. Omega3s (and its family member omega-6) are found in neural tissues and form an integral part of the membranes of the body’s cells. Omegas are important for cognitive and visual function. Our bodies cannot manufacture it, so we have to make sure we boost it through diet because omega-3 is often lacking in our diets. One easy way to up your child’s omega-3 intake is to make sure they get enough nuts and seeds. Walnuts really are winners – they contain an incredibly high content of omega-3 fatty acids, as does chia seeds, flaxseed, canola and walnut oils. Montagu Dried Fruit and Nuts stores offer a wide variety of nuts and dried fruits. An added bonus for moms is

483_mdf_mumsmail_durban.indd 1

the fact that nuts (and dried fruit) are easy to pack in a lunch box and you know it stays fresh throughout the day. Omega-3 fatty acids are also found in oily fish such as mackerel, herring, salmon, tuna, sardines, anchovies and trout. There are also omega-3 enriched foods such as eggs, bread and milk available. Some of the healthiest foods rich in omega-3 fats to include in your child’s diet are: pumpkin seeds, walnuts, flaxseeds, sardines, salmon, beef, soybeans, tofu, Brussels sprouts and cauliflower. Visit Montagu Dried Fruit and Nuts for the biggest variety of dried fruit, nuts and seeds.

The Juice Kitchen

The Juice Kitchen

The Juice Kitchen is an organic, cold pressed juice business born out of a genuine passion for providing the body with the highest quality nutrition available in the modern world – raw fruit and vegetables. From farm to bottle, they grow, juice and bottle all their ‘liquid sunshine’ under organic principles and are based in Hillcrest – on a farm in Summerveld. They deliver locally, free of charge, but on longer deliveries they do add a delivery charge. The Juice Kitchen’s juices are raw, organic and cold pressed and provide your body with the best possible nutrition you can consume. They are a plant-based business aimed at flooding the body with pure hydration and powerful antidotes. The juices are 100% fruit and vegetables with absolutely no preservatives!

www.mumsmail.com

Their juice packages consist of bespoke combinations of fresh vegetables and fruits. They have a three, five or seven day cleansing programme that consists of six juices a day. This programme is an ultimate body cleanse to rid your body of toxins, leaving you cleaner and more energised. The advantage of juicing raw fruit and vegetables is that when the juice is separated from the fibre, most of the nutrients stay in the juice. Because the fibre has been removed, the fresh, living nutrients in the juice are absorbed into the bloodstream and cells within minutes. Juice bypasses the time-consuming and energydepleting process of digestion – bringing you an instant energy and nutrient boost. Fresh vegetable juice is a fabulous source of nutrients to build, nourish, detoxify and regenerate the body. It’s Not Cheating, It’s Healthy Eating! Peter Cocorozis developed Bella & Boo Frozen Yoghurt as a healthy alternative to sweets, as he saw the effect high sugar treats had on his own little girl, Bella. Bella & Boo frozen yoghurt has no preservatives or artificial ingredients and it contains probiotics that are beneficial to your health. Although it is a healthy treat, they have not taken away the creamy texture and awesome flavours Bella & Boo froyo is known for. The 28 flavours on offer ensure that you will never get bored with Bella & Boo froyo. Peter has created a soft-serve style yoghurt that is light in terms of flavour, with all natural colourants and is not overly sweet. Flavours like chocolate, nougat, coffee, mixed berry and condensed milk have given many froyo lovers good reason to go back to Bella & Boo. Peter has not forgotten those that are Banting and has come up with a sugar-free, dairy-free sorbet in awesome fruit flavours like passion fruit, litchi, peach and mango. This sorbet is a good option for children that are dairy intolerant and is suitable for diabetics. The Paradigm Shift Programme is a tool that connects business men and women within the church to micro entrepreneurs in poor communities. Through business training, discipleship, microcredit and oneon-one mentoring, volunteers engage with developing entrepreneurs, who, in turn, bring economic possibility to their impoverished communities. Paradigm Shift’s church-based economic development outreach serves outreachorientated churches in South Africa who desire to stop giving handouts and instead start impacting their greater community by empowering micro entrepreneurs. Paradigm Shift gives churches a structure and a ministry model to transform the entrepreneurial poor by mobilising businessmen and women to offer business training, intentional discipleship, one-onone mentoring and microloans. 3 Top Spring Cleaning Tips Here are three methods to make chores easier, more effective and much less time-consuming, so you can have a tidy, sparkling home. • Clean as You Go: Linda Cobb suggests filling your sink with hot soapy water as you start dinner. “Place used dishes and pans in the filled sink so they’ll be soaking while you eat,” she says. Also, wipe up any spills immediately—don’t give sauces, oils or spices a chance to sit around. • Start with the Bed: If your bed is made, your bedroom looks neat, says Marla Cilley. When you wake up, pull the covers up to your chin, then scissorkick your way out of bed so it’ll be half made. Finish the job before you walk away. • Do Quick Rescues: Do a 5-minute sweep through each room, taking a laundry basket with you. Place in it anything that doesn’t belong in that room, then put away the stuff that does belong there. Source: www. womansday.com.

Take the Mystery and Heartache Out of Dating Many single, widowed or divorced people could benefit from reading ‘Alone? Why???’ by Fiona Dorse.

Birdfeeders

All of us at some time are going to be on our own and looking for a partner, whether it be for a first school dance, an unexpected divorce or the loss of a loved one, or someone who is really successful in their chosen career but just cannot understand why they are finding it so difficult to meet a decent person.

Fruit Trees

Do you know that all single people make the same mistakes that will keep them single for a very long time, if not forever? Happily involved people are very much like entrepreneurs who can see an opportunity and make it work while thousands of people just don’t see the very same opportunity! And what about the people who are like a property that will never sell as it is overvalued? If we are arrogant enough to think that we are perfect, then why is everyone not flocking to date us like a movie star? ‘Alone? Why???’ deals with really pertinent issues that take the mystery and heartache out of dating. You will never look at your partner and relationship in the same way again! The book gives people a much better insight into why they, their children, friends and family make the choices that they do and how to assist them over a break up. For more information contact 082 744 6614 or visit www.corporatedating.co.za or www.corporatedatinginternational.com. WIN WIN WIN Mum’s Mail has three copy of ‘Alone? Why???’ to give away. What Is An Orthodontist?

Dr Deseré Ferreira

September is National Oral Health Month and the South African Society of Orthodontists highlights the important role orthodontists play in oral health. An orthodontist is a fully qualified dentist who has spent at least a further three to four years in full time study at an accredited university specialising in the field of orthodontics gaining a post graduate master’s degree.

Orthodontics is both a science and an art and is not merely just straightening teeth. Teeth have to be aligned to optimise their functional biting relationship and to be in harmony with the jaw joint movements, while being in an aesthetic balance with the face and the lips. With children, an in-depth understanding of growth and development of the face and jaws is required in order to correctly position the teeth in such a way that at the end of the growth period this harmony is achieved.

Orthodontists are uniquely qualified in the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of orthodontic problems. They dedicate their professional lives exclusively to create healthy, beautiful smiles in children, teens and adults.

There is no real quick fix to straighten teeth, so be wary of dentists who may have attended weekend seminars offering treatment which claims to do so. The best time for your child to have their initial orthodontic evaluation is from the age seven years to check whether their dental development is normal. It is very important that children are treated at the right time (about 11 to 14 years) in order to harness the facial growth to assist in correcting the problem. The Lesser-Known Aspects of Speech Therapy A Speech-Language Therapist (SLT) is the professional responsible for the assessment and treatment of communication disorders across the lifespan. SLTs also assess and treat swallowing difficulties, such as poor or delayed sucking reflex in newborns, feeding difficulties with children such as poor chewing, food avoidances that may be sensory related, difficulties with drinking liquids from a cup or with a straw, and swallowing/feeding difficulties that may develop following a stroke or head injury. Speech therapists form a vital part of the remedial education team and provide intervention for reading, spelling and written language difficulties. Language forms the basis of learning at school and if you are concerned or if your child’s teacher has raised concern about your child’s learning, reading ability, reading comprehension or spelling, a speech-language assessment may be useful in identifying an underlying language disorder or auditory processing disorder. Phonological awareness and auditory processing are vital for reading and spelling development as well as listening comprehension, written language development and verbal language development. The initial visit is usually the assessment, and involves obtaining a case history from the parents, or a medical history from the patient. The therapist will then engage with the patient in order to gather information and to administer various tests. The assessment will also include a written report and feedback on the findings. Therapy thereafter is usually on a weekly basis and feedback is provided, as well as activities for home practice. What is Reach for Recovery? Reach for Recovery is a voluntary organisation that renders an emotional and practical support service to persons and their families that have been diagnosed with breast cancer. Although they do promote breast cancer awareness and early detection, their primary focus is on providing a service that is post diagnosis. When a person first finds out they have breast cancer, they may feel overwhelmed, vulnerable, and alone. While under this stress, they must also learn about complex medical treatments and choose the one that’s right for them. Talking with a specially trained Reach for Recovery volunteer during this time can provide a measure of comfort, as well as an opportunity for emotional grounding and informed decision-making.

relevant to breast cancer patients. Reach for Recovery volunteers provide all referred breast cancer patients with a temporary soft prosthesis, a bag for their port au vac drain, a cushion for under arm comfort and a firm sponge for hand and arm exercise. These items are provided free of charge.

Reach for Recovery believes that all women who have had breast cancer surgery should have timely access to appropriate breast prostheses, regardless of whether they can pay for it or not. Permanent prostheses (silicone) are offered free to non-medical aid patients where funds permit. They believe that such a support service will allow indigent breast cancer survivors to regain dignity and carry themselves with pride as women in their communities, Trained volunteers visit patients in hospital, therefore making a positive contribution to either before or after the operation. de-stigmatise cancer. Causes: This condition is thought to be due to an auto immune destruction of the melanocytes. In addition, neurological, cytotoxic and genetic factors have been implicated as a cause of vitiligo. Treatment: There are several treatment options available. These include topical medications such as steroids and immunomodulators. Oral treatments such as certain photosensitisers, antibiotics and oral steroids may arrest the progression of the condition.

Reflexology Past and Present Reflexology is thought to have been passed down through an oral tradition, and possibly first recorded as a pictograph on the Egyptian tomb of Ankhamor in 2330 BC along with other medical procedures. Reflexology symbols are also thought to be recorded on the feet of statues of Buddha in India and later China. The Chinese classic, the Yellow Emperor’s Classic of Internal Medicine, which was written around 1000 BC, has a chapter on “Examining Foot Method” and is the beginning of discussions in print about the connection of life force and points and areas on the feet. It is believed that Marco Polo translated a Chinese massage book into Italian in the 1300s, thus introducing reflexology and massage to Europe. In 1582, a book on an integral element of reflexology called zone therapy was first published in Europe by Dr Adamus and Dr A’tatis. Today reflexology is growing increasingly popular across Europe and Asia as both a complement to other treatments and as a preventive measure. One example is Denmark, where various municipalities and companies have employed reflexologists since the early ’90s. According to several studies, this practice in Denmark has resulted in reduced sick leave and absenteeism (and significant economic savings for the employers). Employees have consistently reported complete or partial improvement in conditions where they sought reflexologists’ help and even relief for additional problems related to stress. In one municipal district, almost one-third of the employees reported greater satisfaction with their jobs after completing six sessions with a reflexologist. Sh’Zen Reflexology for Hands to Relieve Tension and Stress Reflexology is applying pressure on areas of the body to stimulate your body’s own healing power. When your body is experiencing stress, your energy reserves get depleted and you are less able to fight infections or combat pain. But when your body is in a deeply relaxed state induced by reflexology, your body’s natural healing power is activated. Sh’Zen believes in a combination of aromas, awareness, intent and touch – we are so conditioned to rely on pills and medication for our ailments, yet with the above skills, we can reach through the closed doors of memory, allowing nature, empathy and therapeutic touch to gently, yet deeply, reach into the recipient’s energetic level, the circulatory level and the skin, knowing that there are no barriers to prevent the healing benefits of essential oils. By using Sh’Zen’s Hand Exfoliating Cream to remove all the dead skin cells and make the hands softer to touch, then using one of Sh’Zen’s many oils to clear sinuses, help improve breathing, relieve stomach stress, and tight muscles by applying pressure to the various areas on the hand, with love and a bit of time, you can find the way to a stress free life. The Importance of Crawling Why Crawl? • To strengthen the arms. • To improve bilateral co-ordination (the use of both hands and feet together). • To encourage dissociation (using hands and feet alternately) • Position in space. • Crossing the midline. • Tactile development. • It’s fun. Ideas to Encourage Tummy-Lying and Crawling: • Have someone lie in front of the baby holding a toy, getting the child to lift his head and look around. • Place the baby on his tummy, and roll a ball across in front of him to encourage neck strength and tracking. • If the child is very unhappy, try singing to him or playing quiet music while showing him a toy. • Place a rolled-up towel under the baby’s tummy and encourage him to play with an object in hand-knee position. • Once crawling, have a chase around the house, with mom or dad chasing baby. • Have a crawling obstacle course – cushions or your legs to crawl over, a table or chairs to crawl under, an object to crawl around, or a ramp to crawl up. • For the older baby, have a trail of chips/ finger foods along a clean floor and get the baby to crawl and pick them up. • Roll a ball a bit away from the child and get them to go and fetch it. • Play hide-and-seek with an older baby – hide around the corner and call them to come and look for you. • Try not to encourage pull-to-stand against things, standing and cruising along furniture until the child is crawling, otherwise it’s hard to get them to go back to crawling. The SANBS Anti-D Programme Saves Babies

Floating water lilos that won’t pop!

The South African National Blood Service is looking to expand its Anti-D Programme, an initiative aimed at preventing cases of Haemolytic Disease of the Newborn (HDN) and is looking for suitable volunteers who will give South African newborn babies a healthier head start in life. The aim of the programme is to provide enough South African derived Anti-D to be available to all Rh negative pregnant women during all pregnancies.

Musical Theatre, Modern & Hip Hop Classes now at Durban North College and in Glenashley 082 333 3321 dance@iwebz.co.za

What is Haemolytic Disease of the Newborn? Haemolytic Disease of the New born is a serious condition which may occur in babies born to some women who do not have the Rhesus blood group (Rhesus negative mothers). Haemolytic disease is caused when a mother develops immunity against her own baby due to the fact that the mother does not have a Rhesus blood group and the baby does have a Rhesus blood group. These antibodies stay in the mother’s blood and will destroy the red blood cells of subsequent babies causing severe anaemia, jaundice and even death. Treatment: Babies affected by this potentially fatal disease can be given an exchange transfusion soon after birth. This involves replacing the baby’s blood with donated blood. Prevention: This disease can be prevented if the mother is given an injection of anti-D immediately after giving birth to a Rhesus positive baby so that subsequent babies are not at risk. Where does the Anti-D come from? Anti-D is a blood product and is currently only available from women whose babies have been affected by haemolytic disease or from Rhesus negative donors who have been specially immunised. They need donors to volunteer to be immunised. Contact 031 – 719 6841/6895 or visit www.sanbs.org.za. www.mumsmail.com

Mighty Minds Montessori Pre-School Established in 1997, Mighty Minds Montessori Pre-school has a rich and longserving heritage in the Durban community. Situated in Livingstone Road, Morningside, their team of qualified teachers are passionate about education, with many years of experience between them. You can rest assured that your children are in capable hands. The Montessori teaching system has been developed by Dr Maria Montessori and is based on the philosophy that a student’s interest to intellectual activity is a natural part of development and can be stimulated through a creative teaching environment. A student will learn naturally when placed in an environment containing stimulating materials that serve as ‘learning games’ suited to develop the child’s abilities and interests. The teachers act as facilitators to the student’s learning, providing nurturing support, guidance and direction. They follow a standard daily curriculum as routine assists children in their learning. All subjects that are taught are done according to the strict Montessori standards regulated by the South African Montessori Association (SAMA). All subjects are tailored to benefit the child and equip them with the necessary education, life skills, moral integrity, and zest for life that enables them to unlock their true potential and become successful in life. The classrooms have readily available games and equipment, household utensils, plants and animals that are used to develop the child’s motor abilities together with sensory and intellectual capacities. In addition, the classrooms have been designed to encourage the child’s freedom, dignity and independence. The general atmosphere is of children doing things for themselves carefully and competently.

Girls and Boys’ Town Girls and Boys’ Town (GBT) is an organisation that takes the initiative to therapeutically help young people who would otherwise be uncared for or left in unsafe environments. GBT is their guardian and protector. There are several GBT campuses in South Africa, located in KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng and Western Cape. GBT has served youth in communities for close to 57 years, working with dedication to develop and help girls and boys to shine – as well as supporting their families – by providing care, mentorship and guidance. GBT offers residential services in its Family Homes and Youth Development Centres. At these venues research is done and specialised therapeutic child and youth care programmes are implemented to achieve the best possible outcome for the youth – and to deal with the different challenges experienced by the children such as behavioural, educational and relationship difficulties. In Tongaat the Youth Development Centre caters for 55 boys aged 11 to 17 years. In Glenwood and

GBT supports its communities in various ways, including educating youth and adults about its services and how to access them.Through its national hotline callers can be given telephonic counselling. Once the callers’ needs are determined, the next step is to discuss how GBT can assist. Where GBT is not able to help, callers are referred to a social work agency. Santa Shoebox Needs your Help! Santa Shoebox is a national organisation, operated under The Kidz2Kidz Trust, which supports over 100 000 poor children every year. The children who benefit are from rural areas right on our doorstep. For these children, this one gift that they receive from the donors is often the only gift they will ever receive. The sheer joy that you see on their faces when they open a box, with their own name on it, that contains a toothbrush, soap, a facecloth and stationery – that are all brand new, and they don’t have to share or borrow – is indescribable. These are orphans and vulnerable children, from places of safety, from the depths of the valley, often abandoned and left to be brought up by grandparents or by the system. Santa Shoebox operates solely on the support of donors – through sponsorship, pledging kids to support, collections of items, donations of items required for boxes, and time. The Kidz2Kidz Trust is a registered public benefit (PBO-

This year Santa Shoebox is appealing for the following items: • Stationery • Clothing • Sweets • Toiletries • Toys • Empty shoeboxes • Wrapping paper Companies who want to get involved can display a branded box in their office for the collection of small items – Santa Shoebox will drop one off and collect it as required. Is Baby Talk Okay? It’s hard to believe that any baby will end up talking sensibly after hearing goofy high-pitched chitchat. But, baby talk is the best way for babies to learn their parents’ language. It gives guidance that helps infants move toward childish, then adult, language abilities. Remember, we are referring to babies, not toddlers, pre-schoolers or older children who learn language skills quite differently from the way infants do.

Baby talk also aids infant social skills and interests. It presents infants with some great stimuli: they are especially responsive to high pitched noises, predictable and pronounced rhythm catches babies’ attention, and, eye contact and gaze movement with exaggerated facial expressions are of great interest to infants. It’s easy to see that babies are more attentive to baby talk than “normal” adult-directed speech. And because they are paying attention, they are more likely to be stimulated and learn, thereby improving brain development. What do babies learn from baby talk? Infants learning from baby talk are not ready to learn words yet; they are learning the basic speech sounds of their parents’. Because languages are all made up differently, and because humans can make a variety of sounds, babies have to learn which noises are parts of speech, which are sneezes, hiccups, or a parent pretending to be a duck. Infant-directed speech uses short sentences and simple concepts, but it is much more predictable than adult-directed speech. You needn’t worry that you will talk baby talk longer than you child needs it. As children show us their growing attentiveness to speech and understanding of language, we automatically shift our style to suit their abilities. We just wish more people would see pools in the same light. They are no less risky than cars, yet the statistic ‘a child under the age of three is more likely to die by drowning than in a car accident’ does not shock us to the same degree as infant mortality rates on the roads,” says Caryn Formby, director of PowerPlastics Pool Covers and founder of TopStep, the home of pool safety, an educational website on child drowning prevention.

To ensure that at least one method of safety is incorporated into every domestic pool, the SABS is in the process of re-developing the standard for pool safety. This means that when selling any property with a pool, it will undergo a safety inspection. The standard (SANS 10134) has been deemed relevant in today’s world and is considered effective in reducing fatalities in swimming pools. It is now in the public participation process, after which it will be an advisory document for pool builders and pool owners to better understand safety around private swimming pools. Drownings are entirely preventable with the right pool safety devices, adequate swimming skills and responsible parenting in the form of vigilant adult supervision around pools.

Mind Moves and Asperger’s Syndrome How a Mind Moves Reflex Assessment and Mind Dynamix Profile can help: Children with Asperger’s Syndrome (AS) usually appear to experience difficulties in processing information. This is because the ability of their brains to take in, store and use information results in a different perspective on the world. This unique processing often hinders them from accurately recognising and interpreting abstract information. They tend to be visual learners with difficulties processing auditory information. AS children often have low muscle tone and dyspraxia, (problems with motor co-ordination that makes it difficult to think out, plan, and perform planned movements or tasks). A Mind Moves Assessment would reveal if there are any aberrant reflexes, while a Mind Dynamix Profile would give insight into learning style and preference.

What is a Mind Dynamix Profile? A Mind Dynamix Profile is an assessment that determines the dominant eye and ear, brain hemisphere, hand and foot. This helps us to know what we are good at, our preferred learning style, how we function under stress, what career we are best suited for, what areas need development and why we respond to social inter-action the way we do. A selection of Mind Moves will be recommended and demonstrated. By Lindsay Hopwood. Contact Michaela de Gier, Advanced Mind Moves Instructor, on 074 101 2616, Michaela.degier@mindmoves.co.za or visit www.mindmoves.co.za. Five Posh Ways to Save You blinked and now it’s September – already! With Christmas looming around the corner we are all scrambling to find creative ways to count our pennies. Posh Party can lend a hand with these five helpful hints: • Location: With a bit of added effort, finding a suitable venue that is easily accessible to guests and in keeping with the image of your event, in a quieter area, out of town, or on an out-of-season date, can save money in a big way. • Be tech savvy: With modern-day technology at your disposal, there is no reason to print your budget away. Use creative computer presentations/ invitations (there are even dedicated event websites available online) to share the necessary information with guests in a convenient and ‘green’ way. They will love it! • Shop around: From fairy lights to catering, there are many competitive options available. Any excuse to shop, right? • Scrumptious savings: Good food in the right portions will leave guests satisfied and happy. Choosing a venue with in-house catering is another clever way of cutting costs. • Go DIY: It is absolutely acceptable to DIY a few items for your event nowadays! Just be sure keep track of the costs and work standards. If you can’t tell a lily from a rose, best leave the floral centrepieces to the experts! Happy saving! For more information on a posh party or wedding, contact Tarryn Livsey at tarryn@poshparty.co.za or 078 200 8578. Visit www.poshparty.co.za.

The “silly season” is almost upon us and although this period is supposed to be joyous, many people stress about trying to give their families the perfect December holiday. December holiday and credit cards Always try your best to refrain from paying holiday expenses with a credit card. Paying by credit only makes sense if you pay off your credit card bills quickly and in full – with cash already saved up. If credit card bills are not paid in full immediately after purchases were made, you’ll be paying hundreds of rands extra in interest. Saving up for a holiday and paying cash is the best option to establish and maintain healthy personal finances. Determine the cost and set up a budget Start taking control of your holiday expenses by setting up a budget. This budget will include all the expenditures such as fuel, clothes, car hire, travel tickets etc. Set money aside for daily expenditure and add it into the budget. Put a certain amount of money away every week or month towards a ‘holiday fund’. This way you are more committed to save. Reduce costs of your December holiday There are many ways to have fun and it doesn’t have to break the bank. A holiday is a luxury. So, if you are staying home during the holidays, make a list of fun, free or costeffective holiday activities for the whole family. If you decide to travel, book your flights and accommodation well in advance to make use of the large discounts when booking earlier. Save Refrain from eating at restaurants, takeaway food and purchasing new clothes for the next few months. Source: www.debtsafe.co.za. 85

Kevin Stanley’s Dramatic African Skies

Kevin Stanley is a South African artist and gallery owner whose main focus is on ‘skyscapes’ of the coast and the Karoo. He works with oil on canvas and is influenced by the Eastern Cape coast, where he was born, and the Karoo, where he has lived and farmed.

Kevin’s impressionist canvasses reflect the colourful richness of nature and lend to lifestyle art, bringing the outside to interiors – with seascapes for waterside and beach living and a fundamental countrylook of vast Karoo horizons. He grew up in a creative family and so has always had an appreciation of the arts, however his exposure to some brilliant international artists during his time as an art dealer really sparked his interest. He has lived and farmed in the Karoo, where he was influenced by the scale of the horizon and ‘miniaturisation’ of man. His love of beach scenes comes from the life and light of the coast as he is spiritually inspired by the

elements.

Kevin was a Johannesburg-based art dealer before moving to Cape Town where he started ‘live art’ and classes at Artemia in Pinelands, then opened Hout Bay Gallery in 1986, which he sold in 1988. He has owned successful galleries in the UK and is still represented by others there. Kevin is a selftaught professional and offers art classes. Commissions can be undertaken. He also produces a range of miniature paintings.

Boutique Online Travel Agency It takes passion, determination and a proclivity for risk taking to run a travel agency – a business sector not known for high profit margins – and be successful at it. But to launch an online travel agency in 2009 at the height of the global financial crisis takes guts, drive and tenacity – three traits Ravella Lambert, co-founder of iGO Travel has in abundance. “Starting a business in a financial downturn is extremely challenging in every aspect. Ensuring your brand becomes a trusted name, that your cash flow remains positive despite expenses, and having the right team around you is a real challenge and one essential to making one’s business a success,” said Ravella. Today iGO Travel is a highly successful, innovative, online travel agency that combines internet and communications technology with dedicated personal service, offering its clients the best in travel coordination and planning. A few years ago, Ravella took 100% ownership of the agency. It is run by an all-women management team and is among the top five online travel agencies in South Africa, with offices in Durban and Johannesburg. iGO is not competing with the big boys in online travel such as Travelstart. Instead Ravella has created a boutique agency that serves a niche clientele, with a focus on building sincere relationships and guaranteed travel experiences of a lifetime. iGO Travel caters to the leisure and corporate markets and also specialises in school, sports and group travel arrangements. Contact iGO Travel on 031 – 000 1122, e-mail travel@igotravel.co.za or visit www.igotravel.co.za. WIN WIN WIN Mum’s Mail has an iGO Travel backpack and water bottle to give away.
