Editor’s Life

Spring Is In The Air What a wonderful climate we have here, and it’s all year round! Whilst it’s grey and wet in the UK, even in the summer, the sun seems to always shine here and that’s one of the reasons I love Durban so much! There is so much to do, so many places to go and good times to be had – you just have to go out there and find them (once you’ve looked through our fantabulous magazine first for ideas and inspiration!)

As it happens, we Arthurs are having to spend quite a lot of time indoors at the moment as my daughter badly injured her ankle, which also happened to be whilst we were out celebrating my birthday! So we spent hours in hospital and she is now in a moon boot – our plans of going to the beach after lunch that day, were well and truly scuppered!

HOBBY & CRAFT RETAILER Craft classes from mosaics, scrapbooking, stain glass, sewing, knitting, crochet, drawing & much more! We also sell kits online.

As I write this, we are preparing for the 11th Annual Mum’s Mail High Tea in Association with The Sunflower Fund and this year’s theme is ‘Shaken, Not Stirred’ – that’s right, it’s a Bond theme and we are all going to get super glammed up.

Kamel Potteries

As ever, the wonderful Alice Leah has been instrumental in the organising of this much anticipated, sold out event, which takes place on Friday 2nd September at Durban’s Greyville Convention Centre, with the aim of raising funds and awareness for The Sunflower Fund. This will enable The Fund to give hope to patients with life threatening blood disorders, who are in need of a stem cell transplant. I am really looking forward to helping raise lots of money on the day and am especially looking forward to seeing what’s in the goodie bags!

Venus Freeze Dr Baker’s Super Slim Weight Loss and Aesthetic Clinic is situated in Ridge Road, (Peter Mokaba Road) in Overport. Every day patients visit her for medical weight loss, as well as various treatments for slimming, body contouring, skin rejuvenation and tightening. Dr Baker also offers treatments for pigmentation, acne scarring, stretch marks, eczema and other skin disorders. Dr Baker’s Clinic is the main Venus Clinic for South Africa, now stocking a wide variety of skincare products. It’s your one stop shop for all medical requirements related to health and beauty. Venus Freeze The Venus Freeze is a device used to treat wrinkles, rhytides, tighten skin and reduce cellulite and circumferential fat. Using MP2 technology, this device delivers multipolar radio frequency and pulsed magnetic fields to the skin to produce a dense and uniform heat matrix. This causes collagen synthesis and contraction, fibroblast proliferation, neo-vascularity and lipolysis. You can achieve sculpted cheekbones, a contoured jawline, reduce fat, iron out wrinkles, tighten flabby skin, achieve a plumper, fuller and more youthful BEFORE

appearance, reduce cellulite and a more contoured silhouette – all pain-free, with no discomfort and no downtime! Former Editor of Mum’s Mail, Alice Leah, and Bev Delew of Mum’s Mail tried out the Venus Freeze on their faces over a number of sessions. This is what they had to say: “The first few minutes of the initial treatment felt quite weird – I expected it to be really cold because of its name, but it was actually quite hot. It’s quite a relaxing facial massage, and I almost dozed off. My skin felt tighter and firmer after a few sessions, and people started to ask me what I had done as my skin was ‘glowing’. I like the fact that it is non-invasive – no cutting, no injecting and no downtime.” – Alice. “I enjoyed my sessions of Venus Freeze which were surprisingly painless and very gentle. My skin was definitely smoother and glowed wonderfully after each treatment. I noticed substantial tightening around my chin area especially. The texture of my skin seems much plumper and has a more “dewy” look and feel to it.” – Bev.

Support the Hearing Impaired The Decibel Cochlear Campaign raises funds for cochlear implant processors and hearing aids. Hearing is a basic sense, an obvious function that is often taken for granted. It connects us to people and our environment. We play, talk, express, learn and experience in sound and words. We live and love by it. For hearing impaired people, the world can be a silent, isolated place and life’s options can be limited. The Decibel Cochlear Campaign would like to help restore the hearing of deaf people to enable them to live a meaningful life.

Maintenance Matters

the needs of the child or either parent’s financial circumstances change.

Maintenance is an area of family law which always seems to be problematic. It is a fairly common complaint by women that the fathers of their children do not pay maintenance at all, pay late or pay too little maintenance. The law is clear – both parents of children are responsible for the maintenance of their children, and failure to maintain a person’s biological child is a criminal offence for which that person can be prosecuted. In addition, if a party is in arrears, a portion of their income can be attached, property sold in execution or even pension funds attached and paid out to cover the debt. Maintenance of a child is calculated based on the needs of the child met by the parents in proportion to their earning capacities, and is not necessarily a 50% split between the parents. The needs of a child are not just medical and schooling costs, but they include shelter, clothes and food, as well as costs associated with municipal costs, travel costs, pet costs, telephone, insurance and entertainment. Thereafter the respective earning capacities of the parents will be considered and a ratio of their respective amounts determined in light of the needs of the child. Either parent may apply to the Maintenance Court in their district to vary the amount of maintenance paid by the other parent when

Water Issues At a time when everyone is collecting water in plastic water tanks, one can’t help asking “why not use pool water?” Of course, we can. Pool water is not poisonous, but it can taste terrible. But by simply adding a pressure pump to the filter piping, a simple connection to the house supply can supplement your water requirements for toilets, showers, and washing machines. The plastic tank is limited in size and is typically installed out of the way, so we don’t see the water or smell it. They are often quite small – the typical installations are 1 000 to 5 000 litres. This will only supply the house for perhaps a day or two, while the pool can deliver the needed water for 10 to 20 times that amount. Again, it is not ideal to have the pool level drop too much, as this can leave staining. But it is a more attractive option than a plastic tank. The installation includes pipes from the pool to the house pipe supply, a non-return valve between the connection and the council water supply, and a high pressure pump which has a pressure-control valve. All of this is required for the plastic tank option, but without the plastic tank. Storing water is a simple and obvious solution to the fear we have of water shortages. It is comforting to know that there are ways to protect ourselves, and that we can continue our daily lives and adapt to a lifestyle with less water. Whether you choose a tank or a pool, you need not live without a flushing toilet or a shower.

Tips for Selling your Home How do you go about ensuring that you give yourself the best possible opportunity to achieve the highest selling price for your home, in the shortest possible time? Here are five tips from RE/MAX Panache.

placed on the market is an important factor that you as the home owner can have direct influence over. Home maintenance is something that home owners should be concerned about at all times.

Understanding the Market It is important to have an understanding of what is happening in your local property market. Do some research – connect with a local estate agent, attend a home owners’ presentation in your area or research online or in the newspaper property sections.

Selecting the Right Estate Agent A professional real estate agent is an important component in terms of achieving the best possible price for your home. Selling your family home can be an extremely emotional time and having a professional to guide you through this process is extremely valuable.

Setting the Price Estate agents are professionals who will provide professional advice to a home owner on what price could be achieved for their home. However it is ultimately the home owner who will make the final decision on what price they want for their home.

Don’t let the Momentum Slip It is important that you are aware of the activity and buildup of momentum that occurs as more people view your home and more buyers start showing interest – it is important that you are aware of this build-up of momentum, and that you don’t let it slip by turning away a good offer.

Bloom From Within

Dr Deseré Ferreira

Spring is a time to clear the clutter, to get rid of unnecessary baggage and make room for new blooms. While we pay attention to de-cluttering physically, it’s important to de-clutter our minds… to get rid of negative thoughts that weigh us down and replace them with positivity, optimism and hope. The stress of everyday life can weigh us down over time. Relationship conflict, work stress, deadlines, illness, finances, trauma and loss can lead to negative thinking patterns which affect our moods and behaviour. While stress is inevitable, we can certainly learn to manage stress, learn from our negative experiences and look for meaning in our struggles. We can allow our stress to cause us to wilt like a dehydrated flower, or choose to bloom in all our splendour by reminding ourselves of our innate strengths, by practising gratitude and by opening new doors when older ones have closed.

Back To Basics: How To Build A Perfect Smile September is Oral Health Month and The Dental Practice has some sound advice on dental hygiene. The foundation for permanent healthy teeth in children and teenagers is established in the first years of life. Poor diet, poor habits of food intake and inadequate tooth brushing habits during the first two years of life are related to tooth decay in children. Furthermore, the development of cavities in primary teeth increases the risk of developing cavities in permanent teeth. Hence, it is vital to implement a proper oral hygiene routine with a dental professional early in life to ensure the development of healthy and strong teeth. Teenagers and kids are now experiencing higher rates of tooth decay than previously seen which can be attributed to a variety of factors: a sedentary lifestyle, poor oral hygiene, an excess diet of refined carbohydrates, medical conditions such as acute sinusitis, as well as use of prescription drugs with side effects of a dry mouth – all result in a high number of people with so-called rampant ‘tooth decay.’ Dental professionals focus on good dental hygiene promotion before they begin with restorations; otherwise patients are left in a continuous cycle of dental problems. Multiple symptoms can stem from not adhering to basic hygiene practices.

15% off

The Dental Practice’s methodology of treating widespread tooth decay is not only systematic but highly effective in guiding many individuals out of this cycle into a state of stable oral health, especially from a young age. They believe in a holistic and sustainable approach for all. The road to good oral health begins with a trusting relationship between professional, patient and parent. Healthy Hacks for Fussy Eaters Fussy eating can be a real epidemic for mums who are doing their best to squeeze nutrients into their kids’ diets. Here are a few useful hacks for healthier eating in your children. Keep the treats out of toddlers’ eye level. Chips and biscuits visible in the fridge and cupboard create unnecessary temptation for kids. Chances are if your little one hardly sees it, they won’t remember to want it. Shake up your presentation of healthy foods to your kids. Stereotyping food and expecting a negative response often does more damage than the food item itself. Baby carrots and dip can be an after-dinner treat, while frozen grapes skewered on toothpicks could be seen as an icy reward versus an obligation. “Nugget style” foods are an easy way to sneak in veggies for kids. Most children love the novelty of nuggets, so it’s the perfect opportunity to add some goodness into their favourite foods. Add in finely chopped zucchini, cauliflower, etc. Variety is the key in developing your child’s taste buds. Exposing them to as many different tastes as possible helps expand their preferences and can influence previously disliked foods. Offer as many variations of healthy foods you can to create a less fussy palate. Get your kids involved in the kitchen. Inviting them to help prepare meals builds more interest in what they’re eating and promotes a wider acceptance of food varieties. Encourage their suggestions or choices where possible. Homemade meatballs make a simple and easy lunchbox filler. Make them yourself to guarantee only good ingredients have gone in, squeezing in some veggies at the same time. Eye Care Awareness

Dr Kathryn Carr Eye Care Awareness Month is observed from MBChB (UCT) DCH (SA) 19 September to 16 October, and Optometrist Leon de Vos sheds some light on why routine eye exams are important.

General PraCtitioner

Routine eye exams are important - regardless of your age or your physical health.

Special interest in Child Health

During a comprehensive eye exam, your eye doctor does much more than just determining your prescription for eyeglasses or contact lenses. He or she will also check your eyes for common eye diseases, assess how your eyes work together as a team and evaluate your eyes as an indicator of your overall health.

LOSE WEIGHT EASILY

Also, eye doctors often are the first health care professionals to detect chronic systemic diseases such as high blood pressure and diabetes. Eye examinations are an important part of health maintenance for everyone. Adults should have their eyes tested at least every two years to keep their prescriptions current and to check for early signs of eye disease. Eye exams for children also are very important to insure normal vision development and confirm that children have the visual acuity and vision skills required for schoolwork and other activities. Children don’t always know what ‘normal’ vision looks like, so they’re unlikely to complain of vision problems. However, because vision is so closely linked to the learning process, undetected learning-related Leon de Vos vision problems can lead to trouble with O P T O M E T R I S T schoolwork. Children are Individuals National ADHD Day is observed on 14 September and Dr Kerusha Naidoo explains the benefits of taking a holistic and natural approach to treating ADHD in children. Research has shown that South Africa has one of the highest rates of reverting to take prescription drugs for ADHD (even higher than the USA!). We, as a country, have not taken to the international trend of moving away from prescription drugs and rather adopting a more holistic approach. A study comparing the effect of homeopathy vs Ritalin, performed in Switzerland, evaluated 115 children with ADHD/ADD, who showed an improvement of 73% noted in the homeopathy group as compared to a 65% improvement noted in the Ritalin group. The study concluded that homeopathy has comparable benefits to Ritalin. A 14-year-old patient came to me complaining that he did not want to be on Ritalin as it made him anti-social and sad, but was too scared to tell his parents. Homeopaths listen to the child’s voice, also taking into account dietary intake and lifestyle, and will avoid side effects by prescribing medications that are natural. Looking at the child as an individual is the approach that homeopathic medicine has adopted for centuries – asking questions like: why is the child behaving in this manner? Why is the child not able to concentrate in class? Where is their mind going to? Is there stress at home or school? These are a few questions Personal that get to the Psychologist, root cause of the problem, rather than just & the Career treating superficialCoaching symptoms. Beautiful Life

Do you want your Body back for Summer? Cellulite needs very little introduction – it is the scourge of the modern woman. Cellulite gurus believe that fluid trapped between the fat cells may result in the increased visibility of these fat deposits in the skin, resulting in the dreaded ‘orange peel’ look. Cellulite seems to affect almost every woman – whether thin or fat – and is most commonly found on the thighs, buttocks and legs and is aggravated by consumption of highly refined foods, smoking and alcohol, a sedentary lifestyle, general toxification of the body and poor circulation and fluid retention. Best Bump Busters: • Water: drinking lots of water daily, at least eight glasses per day, helps to eliminate built up toxins and improves circulation. • Exfoliation: tingly pink skin is a sure sign of stimulated circulation – Sh’Zen products

work to re-energise a sluggish system, such as their Skin Stimulator and Cellulite Control Scrub. • Detoxifying baths: the skin is the largest organ and is riddled with capillaries and ducts – and therefore is a major eliminative and absorption system. Sea salt and specifically chosen essential oils can assist the body in releasing toxins and excess fluids, such as Sh’Zen’s Detoxifying Bath Crystals. • Massage: encourages lymphatic drainage, cleanses the body of unwanted toxins and can increase blood circulation as well. Try Sh’Zen’s Detoxifying Toning Oil. • Regular exercise: walk at least 20 minutes a day to build up your heart rate. • Sleep: Get at least eight hours a night. Contact Claudette on 082 494 427. Slimming Solutions at Lash & Tan

3 Star

Massage Therapy

Lash & Tan offers a range of slimming treatments. Lipo Laser The Lipo Slim Laser is the latest slimming and contouring system. It is designed to reduce unwanted fat without surgery. The laser penetrates through the skin to the hypodermis and makes the fat cells release glycerol, water and free fatty acids. The fat cell shrinks and collapses. The lymphatic system then removes the fatty liquids through your veins. The body needs to get the released liquids out through heat or energy in 24 hours to prevent it from turning back into fat cells – this is done through a FIR Sauna Treatment. FIR Sauna Treatment The Far Infrared “Deep Heat” does not just improve the appearance of body contours, but actually restores youthful, healthy skin and minimises cellulite. Benefits: • Reduces fat • Detoxes organs and skin • Removes toxins • Increases metabolism • Reduces cellulite • Relieves stress • Reduces aches and pains • Burns 600 calories in 30 minutes. Biominceur Body Wraps Biominceur is a new slimming programme that is packed full of essential oils, plant and algae extracts, as well as caffeine – resulting in a wide range of therapeutic benefits: • Reduces cellulite/inches • Detoxifies • Slims, tones and firms • Stimulates lymphatic system and helps burn fat • Improves varicose veins and stretch marks • Improves circulation and helps with metabolism of fat cells. Kids’ Life

Parents Need Help Too Parents love their children but don’t always know how to help them, especially if the child has Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). They don’t understand the many ways in which ADHD can affect children or how to deal with their behaviour. In general, parents just don’t know where to start and how to help their children. They doubt themselves as well as their parenting skills and frustration levels are high. Assessment and diagnosis of ADHD is often a starting point for helping these children – a full assessment will show where the child’s weaknesses lie and indicate the therapies required. There is a range of therapies available and they include psychological counselling, occupational therapy, medication, remedial therapy and more. However, parents rarely seek guidance on how to handle their own feelings towards their child’s problems and difficulties. Having a child with ADHD can be an overwhelming

experience and many parents end up highly frustrated, as well as mentally and physically exhausted. Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Support Group of Southern Africa (ADHASA) suggests that parents: • Seek counselling and don’t blame yourself. It is common for parents of children with ADHD to blame themselves for their child’s behaviour. It is also important to realise that ADHD is a real condition and not of your doing. • Seek support. Find support among other parents who understand the challenges of an ADHD child by joining a support group. • Always remember that you are a parent, not a magician – a perfect child does not exist. Arm yourself with a positive attitude. This will help you see the small, praiseworthy successes that can add up to permanent improvement in your child’s behaviour. Source: www.adhasa.co.za.

Why You Need To Save For Your Child’s Education There are few absolute certainties in life but having to educate your child is one, and the fact that the cost of education gets more expensive by the year is another.

year today will be more like R117 000 per year by the time your new born attends in 14 years’ time? That works out to about R700 000 in total.

Goodness knows there are all sorts of additional expenses and distractions that new parents face when their baby arrives. Considering their child’s future education requirements can appear to be the least of their worries, especially when they are perusing the aisle for nappies, formula and next-level teats.

Having an education savings plan in place can help you significantly reduce this cost by covering some of the burden from investment returns rather than out of your own pocket. An intelligent plan, started from birth, can feasibly save you up to 63% of this cost, or around R441 000.

But it is precisely at this time that new parents can extract the maximum benefit from planning ahead. In fact, if the cost of contributing to an education savings plan early on seems expensive, they would do well to consider the cost of not contributing to one.

Implementing a formal plan allows you to set up an investment strategy that prioritises this important life goal and will assist you in staying disciplined and to avoid seeing these funds as a part of your monthly disposable income. Make a difference in your child’s life – start saving today.

Did you know that a non-private high school education that costs R35 000 per

Tips to Prepare for Exams

IQSMART

20% DISCOUNT CODE: MUMS2016

Step 1: How much time Kids need to know how much time they have available to study. Using a time sheet, help them work out their time availability. 1. Block off the chunk of time from the morning until the end of their school day. 2. Block off time for any weekday or weekend sport or extra murals. 3. Block off the time spent eating dinner, preparing for bed, showering, etc. 4. Block of any other set commitments that they have during the week or weekend. 5. Look at the gaps and decide how many hours they could dedicate to studying each day, bearing in mind that they also need some time to relax. 6. Add up the number of hours available to study per week. 7. Times the hours per week by the number of weeks from now until just before exams start – this is how many hours they have to prepare!

ENGLISH LANGUAGE GRADE R - 12 MATHEMATICS GRADE R - 12 A years work can be caught up in as little as 3 months. On average students improve 1 to 2.5 grade levels in less than 6 months.

Using these, or a downloaded worksheet, they can decide how many hours they need to allocate per subject. Decide whether they want to study an equal number of hours per subject, or whether they want to take some time from one subject to allocate to another. Step 3: Setting up a study schedule They have already worked out how much time they have available, what they need to study and how much time they need for each subject. Next, they need to create a study schedule. Visit www.momdiary.co.za to download the free time sheet, subject breakdown sheet and study schedule. www.mumsmail.com

Caramel Popcorn Lions These make great party snacks for children – and they’re so easy, the kids can even help prepare them!

Face Painting

Ingredients: • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil • ¼ cup popcorn, uncooked • 1½ tablespoons golden syrup • ½ cup castor sugar • 45g butter • ½ cup white chocolate melts • 2 x 34g packets peppermint lifesavers • 16 red smarties • 9 x 4cm long pieces of liquorice strap • 50g tube black writing icing

• Skin care and hygiene is top priority • Paints safe to use • EU-compliant products • Waterbased/easy to remove • Parties also available during school hours

074 804 9289 amykarsen@gmail.com www.brushstrokes.co.za

Method: Line eight holes of a muffin pan with paper cases. Cook the popcorn and pour into a large heatproof bowl. Place golden syrup, sugar and butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Cook, stirring all the time, for three to four minutes or until sugar dissolves (don’t boil). Then boil for four minutes or until golden. Working quickly, pour caramel mixture over popcorn. Stir to coat. Divide mixture between paper cases. Using the back of a spoon, press down to flatten tops slightly. Set aside to cool. Reserve eight chocolate melts and melt the remaining chocolate. Use the Lifesavers, Smarties, liquorice, chocolate melts, icing and melted chocolate to create eyes, nose, mouth and whiskers on each popcorn cup – as shown in the picture. Keep aside to set and serve.

Exploding Baggies

The bag blows up like a balloon.

This is a fun, easy and affordable science experiment to try at home, or you could even do it as an activity at a science-themed party! Supplies needed: • 1/3 cup (80ml) white vinegar • 1 zipper-lock bag • 10 drops food colouring • Clothes peg • 2 tablespoons (28g) baking soda

Why it worked: When baking soda and vinegar mix together, it causes a reaction that creates gas. Gas molecules take up more space than the liquid and the solid do, which is why the bag expands. Tip: Do this in an easy-to-clean location. We suggest outside with a hose handy – or maybe in the bathtub!

The experiment: Pour the vinegar into the bag and add a few drops of food colouring. Twist the plastic above the liquid, and hold the twist secure with a clothes peg. Now, above the clothes peg, add the baking soda and close the bag’s zipper. Take off the clothes peg and let the vinegar drop into the bag. Shake it and watch the reaction. The outcome:
