Despite this being the Valentine’s issue, I’m not really “feeling the love” right now...After almost three blissful weeks of holiday we came back to work with a resounding thud – straight into the new year, with a radically shortened deadline to cope with. So we are really proud that we have managed to produce our fab mag in such a short space of time – we hope you’ll enjoy it and do give us your feedback, as we love hearing from you. I tried to convince my husband (whose memory is not the best), that it was his turn to arrange our Valentine’s treat this year. Sadly, he did not fall for it, and although he could not recall exactly what we did last year, he is adamant that he arranged it. I’ll not easily forget the disastrous Valentine’s dinner fiasco at a local restaurant two years ago, so this year I really do need to go all out to impress (and redeem myself...)

Book Reviews

• Shadows on the Nile by Kate Furnivall. 27 year old Jessica Kenton’s life is torn apart when her younger brother, Timothy, vanishes. Vowing to find him, she follows his trail to exotic Egypt where she doesn’t expect the danger she is confronted with. There are powerful people who do not want her brother found and not everything is as it seems…a story of courage, betrayal, a young woman’s determined search for her brother and her discovery of an all-consuming love in the shifting deserts of Egypt. • Did You Miss Me? by Karen Rose. Prosecutor Daphne Montgomery pulled herself out of a damaged past to build a solid life for herself and her son. Her confidence is shattered again by the news that her son has been kidnapped. She believes it has everything to do with a recent high profile case of hers. With her son’s life in jeopardy she must unlock a secret from her past and confront a truth that will change everything and everyone closest to her. • Munch by Hein Scholtz. Munch is an eclectic collection of recipes for students, young professionals and first-time cooks. It makes use of easily accessible ingredients, a basically stocked kitchen and has simple yet delicious recipes to follow. Through the inclusion of social media – Twitter, Facebook and QR codes – this recipe book provides a unique opportunity for interaction between reader, recipe and author. A definite first! • Skylark by Megan Spooner. 16 year old Lark Ainsley has never seen the sky. Her world is a dome which encloses all that’s left of humanity; this dome’s barrier is sustained by the magical energy harvested from kids who reach adolescence. Soon it is her turn to be harvested and she learns that she’s different; her energy is in a constant state of renewal. She flees and fights her way through the terrible wilderness beyond the edge of the world which she knows. • Sorrowline (The Timesmith Chronicles) by Neil Bushnell. 12 year old Jack Morrow is used to life being complicated. His mother died five years ago and his father is now headed for prison. Then Jack discovers he’s a Yard Boy – someone with the ability to travel through Sorrowlines – the channels that connect every gravestone with the date of the person’s death – and he is quickly pulled into an adventure beyond anything he could have imagined… • Nelson Mandela by Kadir Nelson. This picture book offers an introduction of Nelson Mandela’s life to young readers. Clear verse and beautiful paintings follow the iconic leader from his childhood, his work as a young city lawyer, through to his political leadership against the brutality of apartheid, his long imprisonment and then the triumph of his election as president of his country. Business Life DISC Your Business Michelle Ardé of KZN Cosmetology came to the Mum’s Mail offices recently to do a DISC presentation with the staff. DISC is a method used to profile people into four behavioural groups, namely Dominant, Influencing, Steady/Safe and Cautious. The personality profiles are then used to match people to particular job descriptions in a team. An even more practical application, in our case, was to teach the staff how to recognise these personality types in our customers and respond accordingly. Michelle used a short audiovisual presentation to introduce the subject before getting down to the juicy bits. After each member of staff had filled in a series of options on a form and come up with their personal DISC types, Michelle explained the characteristics that went with each. For example, dominant people want quick service, influencing people like excitement, steady people seek a personal connection, and cautious people look for logic and facts. We had fun identifying those characteristics in each other and seeing how each was suited to their job, e.g. designing, sales, managing or admin. Michelle then spent some time explaining how we could adapt DISC for use with our customers. This was so we could improve communication with them and solve their problems. Adapting DISC to customers involved really getting to know them, looking for body language and voice tone, and then mirroring those in our responses. Editor of Mum’s Mail, Alice, said: “I loved that Michelle could ‘spot’ what we were from a mile away! We are so predictable, but this info will help us ‘manage’ our clients better!” Michelle had a professional and personable approach and adapted her presentation specifically for Mum’s Mail. A very worthwhile exercise for your business. Contact: Michelle Ardé, KZN Cosmetology, 082 326 0083, kzncosmetology@gmail.com.

Business Life A “Healthy” Business Durban businesswoman Bronwyn Bath has owned and managed Creative I for seven years. But in 2011 Bronwyn decided to branch out and start Fit4Health, a women’s and children’s outdoor exercise programme. Bronwyn had achieved distinctions at the Exercise Training Academy through which she studied and her 2 x 2 Stroller Training programme was subsequently aired on SABC 3. But, like any other business, Bronwyn’s has not been without its challenges. Difficulties included the climate in Durban, receptiveness (or lack thereof) to a new concept, poor economy and low capital. But she persevered and gleaned some helpful business tips along the way. “I persevered and made use of contacts made in my graphic design business,” said Bronwyn, “relied on networking meetings, made sure I attended a marketing workshop and never gave up trying to offer the best service possible.” She also kept up exercise during her own pregnancy and relied heavily on her Christian faith. Fit4Health offers a lifecycle of training for ladies and their kids i.e. Ladies’ Boot camp, Fit Mums ‘n Babes Boot Camp, Stroller Training and CrazyFit Kids’ Boot Camp workouts. All of these, believes Bronwyn, improve participants’ self-confidence – the particular element that drives Bronwyn to continue – and excel. “I want to be in the forefront of all ladies in Durban and the country as the ‘go-to’ business for outdoor training that suits every lady at every stage of their lives.”

Delicious Life Champagne Valley Meats Champagne Valley Meats is a direct-to-home delivery service in the Durban area for a butchery located in the Champagne Valley, Drakensberg. Champagne Valley Meats is passionate about the quality and taste of their meat. The beef (dry-aged), lamb and pork are from local farmers who provide hormone-free meat and their chicken is supplied by a farmer who uses as little hormone additive as possible. No preservatives or additives are used. The meat is trimmed and individually packed. Orders can be placed at any time by e-mail or SMS and are delivered to you. Delivery is usually within two days, depending on stock, otherwise within two weeks in the Durban area and monthly in Pietermaritzburg. Deliveries from the Berg are frequent, and any meat not sold within 24 hours is frozen to preserve flavour and quality (except vacuum-packed beef which is further wet-aged). Whilst prices are benchmarked on a local supermarket chain, the quality and flavour of their meat, believes Champagne Valley Meats, is far superior. The difference is definitely in the taste. Alice Leah, editor of Mum’s Mail, tried a selection of the meats and had this to say: “The first thing that struck me was the colour of the meat – it is a much darker red than the meat you buy from the butchery/shops. We tried the lamb chops, beef mince, chicken and wors and all the meat was delicious and had very little fat. The bonus is the door-to-door delivery and the freshness of the meat.” Contact: Fiona Westerdyk, 079 616 9385, meat@3i.co.za.

Summer Gardening Tips

After the holiday joy, it’s time to focus on garden maintenance and plan for the coming season. Here are some tips to get you started: • Plan what winter annuals you want and get ready to sow this seed in February. • Prune summer-flowering shrubs after they have finished flowering. • Lawns need extra care if they have grown during the holiday season. Do not mow your lawn too short, rather mow more regularly and don’t take more than a third of the leafblade off at a time. Look out for brown patches which may mean you have lawn caterpillar that needs to be controlled. • Water your garden early in the morning. A thorough soaking every three to four days and a thick layer of organic mulch will encourage deep root development and healthy plants in hot weather. • Good garden hygiene can help to curb fungal diseases (like mildew and rust) and keep red spider mite and fruit fly at bay. • Remove old flower stalks and the dead material around the base of spent perennials, pick up fallen fruit before it rots, and lightly prune overgrown shrubs and creepers to allow air to circulate and light to penetrate. • Make this year different and undertake to grow your own herbs and vegetables. It’s fun, rewarding and cost-effective. • Remember the birds and keep bird baths topped up with clean water regularly. • Add water-retaining granules and mulch to containers and hanging baskets to keep these hydrated.

EcoSteam

Home Life

EcoSteam is a fully mobile valet unit offering professional and new technology in the car valet industry. Their high-tech steam-and-dry method is a quick, efficient, water-friendly cleaning system (average of 4L per car) and offers many advantages in comparison to other regular car wash outlets and cleaning services. It is neater as steam evaporates and produces no run-off. Cleaner results are obtained due to highpressure dry steam applied to deep clean and sanitise all interior surfaces. Most importantly, EcoSteam uses only 100% biodegradable professional products that are not harmful to the environment. EcoSteam offers a unique, convenient and superior car valet service. There is no official wash bay nor costly set-up required, so there is no need to drive to a car wash outLavender let. It is therefore time saving. EcoSteam is fully insured for conducting business and Laundromat delivery of service on any site.

& Coffee Bar

Individual clients can pay for the services when collecting their keys. Monthly payment facilities can be arranged for contractual clients. And – don’t take EcoSteam’s word for it – book a demo! Seeing really is believing – a great opportunity for you to see the team in action and appreciate the method used to make your vehicle look as good as new. Cleaning options vary from a basic exterior steam clean and vacuum to a full valet as well as executive top-ups e.g. steam wax, leather seat treatment, roof lining, engine steam clean and clay glaze applications.

Home Life Inanda Veterinary Hospital In the tree-lined area of Waterfall, near Hillcrest, is the extremely well-equipped vet practice, Inanda Veterinary Hospital. Headed by Dr Anthony Zambelli, the practice treats dogs and cats, offering oncology, surgery (e.g. for heart problems), various scopes (e.g. endoscopy and colonoscopy), dental treatment, an all-important sterilising department and even a laboratory for testing blood samples. I spent a lovely morning with Dr Zambelli, a passionate and accomplished Specialist Veterinary Physician, who showed me around the premises which he converted two years ago from an existing crèche. Everything is computerised/digitalised, so for example I got to see a digital picture of a dog’s heart, a digital X-Ray machine and learnt how a scope, equipped with a camera, can manoeuvre inside an animal’s body and produce corresponding pictures on a computer screen. Dr Zambelli is particularly experienced in this area. Recently he was called on to retrieve a ball (and a scrubbing brush) from the stomach of an uShaka Marine World dolphin! But being hands-on is far more important to Dr Zambelli, despite the wonders of technology. I got to see this in practice when I attended a hydrotherapy session for Dickens, a Pembroke Corgi with hip dysplasia. Helped by a wetsuit-clad attendant, Dickens had a 15-minute session in a small outside pool. Dickens will have about 12 such sessions, three per week, before heading off to Onderstepoort in Pretoria to have an operation. Hydrotherapy is good for developing muscles before or after surgery, and can help with weight loss. The sessions, done in the supportive environment of water, can reduce recovery time by as much as half. Expert Healing Hands

Linda Liebenberg, a natural healing therapist, has the most appropriately named business: Healing Hands. The day I was due to visit Linda for a massage, I awoke tired and with a headache; when my massage was over I was calm and rejuvenated. Linda operates from her home-based spa in Kloof. She also travels to clients, bringing all the necessary equipment with her. Her little spa overlooks the majestic Krantzkloof valley and its open door invites the gentle breeze and bird chatter inside. First off Linda touched my back in various places and, magically (at least to me), found all my problem areas within seconds. This is testament to her many years of experience in the field. She then got the blood circulation going with the G5 (an electrically operated hand-held machine with a pleasantly smooth surface) before applying organic oils and beginning the massage. Different to a relaxation massage, this deep-tissue massage was firm, worked on knots and felt more like therapy than a guilty luxury. In fact, Linda recommends regular massages to help release tight muscles. She worked on the right side of my back, from hip to shoulder, followed by the left, and then the front and back of my neck. I felt very comfortable with Linda, listening to her explain things about my muscles I hadn’t considered before. Linda also does Tension Release (TRE), reflexology, lymph drainage, Reiki, sports massage, a corporate collection and couples massage/pamper packages. I highly recommend Linda’s therapeutic, expert treatment so make a booking today and give your body the healing it needs. Contact: Healing Hands, 082 454 3181, linda@healinghandskzn.co.za.

Healthy Life Mind the Dietary Gaps

www.sanbs.org.za 0800 11 9031

Children routinely choose unhealthy foods that may look good and taste delicious, but that are not packed with elements essential for optimum health. Their choices frequently do not contain enough vitamins, minerals and fatty acids, all of which are necessary for good health and development. The children’s nutrition programme from GNLD plays an important role in filling these dietary gaps. The programme consists of: a Protein Drink with delicious milkshake flavours containing all 22 amino acids; Vita Squares containing essential grain concentrates that repair and restore cells; and Vita Guard, which provides the necessary whole-food antioxidants to neutralise the negative effects of free radicals. Healthy Life Reproductive Health

Dr DM McLynn

Infertility medical terminology refers to a woman who is unable to fall pregnant within one year of unprotected intercourse with the intention of conceiving. It also describes women who are unable to carry a pregnancy to near term on account of recurrent early miscarriages. Approximately one third of the causes of infertility are associated with female medical conditions, one third with male medical conditions and one third as a result of causes in both partners or no cause can be found. Approximately two thirds of couples treated for infertility subsequently go on to have babies. Female causes of infertility include disease or genetic abnormalities of the female reproductive apparatus (e.g. blocked tubes, non ovulation). In the male similar causes may interfere with the production and storage of normal sperm.Investigation and treatment of infertility is an optional choice of the couple, depending upon their ethical, religious, cultural or personal views on the process of conception and pregnancy. Should a couple decide to proceed with investigation of their fertility status, they would both need to visit a gynaecology specialist and undergo appropriate examinations and investigations. This approach will save time, in the long run money, and allow for interventions at a younger age with improved success of treatments.

Varicose Veins

Varicose veins are enlarged, blue veins that can look like tortuous cords that bulge above the skin’s surface. These types of veins are commonly found in the legs. Varicose veins are common and affect three in 10 people, typically between the ages of 30 and 70. They prevent blood clearing effectively from your legs resulting in tired, achy, restless and swollen legs. How serious is the condition? Varicose veins are a medical problem and not cosmetic and are often an indicator of underlying venous reflux or leaky valves. These patients will progress to develop an ulcer in the ankle area. If you have varicose veins and skin changes (eczema itch or discolouration around your ankle) you are at significant risk for developing an ulcer. Venous reflux causes irreversible damage to the soft tissues in your leg and can be prevented by early treatment by a specialist. How did I get varicose veins? Varicose veins tend to run in families. Pregnancy and standing a lot can worsen them. Previous injury to the leg or previous DVT can be a cause. Leg veins contain valves that ensure blood flows against gravity back to your heart when you walk. These valves sometimes fail to work and blood is not removed from your leg as usual. This causes an increase in pressure in the superficial veins and causes them to bulge out as varicose veins. Should I have treatment? Surgery is often required. Seek medical help (for varicose or spider veins) before treatment. Visit a vein specialist surgeon who can advise you on appropriate management options including the latest radio frequency ablation of varicose veins. This minimally invasive procedure gives excellent results with minimal downtime after the procedure.

Beautiful Life Imagine Beautiful Legs Free of Unsightly Veins... Unsightly veins are a problem that affects a range of age groups, skin types and lifestyles. Varicose veins are enlarged vessels that have widened as a result of weakness in the vein wall, which stretches and bulges. Spider veins are small superficial purple or red veins stretching like a web under the skin. Until now, treating varicose and spider veins was a lengthy and painful process with needles or other invasive treatments. Now, using the new combined technologies of the VascuLight system, unsightly leg veins of all types can be treated - simply, non-invasively and successfully.

LAS E R

TR EATM E NT

Fraxel is the very latest in laser beauty therapy whereby only a “fraction” of your skin is treated at a time with thousands of tiny microscopic laser spots. It provides the benefits of skin resurfacing (collagen stimulation & skin tightening) without the discomfort & inconvenience of a lengthy healing period.

Before

Rediscover the fresh, healthy skin of your youth through this safe, non-invasive procedure

After Neck & Décolleté

Varicose veins (deeper blue veins), need different treatment to spider veins (near the skin surface). For this reason, the VascuLight system is equipped with two different light technologies. The laser component of the VascuLight system is used to treat the varicose veins. The small spot of laser light travels through the skin and is absorbed by the blood within the vein. The resulting heat coagulates or clots the blood and destroys the function of the vein. This process does not affect any of the surrounding tissue. Over time, the vein will be absorbed by the body and will disappear from sight. Spider veins are smaller, superficial structures that are treated using light energy. The light energy is absorbed by the blood, changed to heat, and the vein is destroyed. This Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) technology is exclusive to the VascuLight system. With both technologies your doctor has the ability to use exactly what is needed for the best result. For more info contact the Durban Cosmetic Laser Centre. Beautiful Life The Secret Garden – Pure and Natural Ruth Hull, a qualified aromatherapist, has developed the most exquisite aromatherapy facial oil. It is made from a blend of rejuvenating, nourishing essential oils that Ruth has researched and chosen specifically for their regenerative and soothing qualities. The base is jojoba oil, a liquid wax that closely resembles the structure of your skin’s own sebum. This balances sebum production and can therefore be used on both oily and dry skins. The oil has also been tested on acne-prone, dehydrated and sensitive skins as well as normal/combination skins, with great results on all of them. Jojoba is also an emulsifier so it unclogs pores and helps lift deep-seated grime from the skin. In addition it is anti-inflammatory and so reduces redness, is an anti-oxidant, and is both antibacterial and antifungal. To the jojoba base Ruth has added seven other plant oils and six essential oils which work beautifully together to create a blend that stimulates cell regeneration (to try and stop those wrinkles!), soothes redness and inflammation, enhances suppleness and elasticity, and leaves a rich, velvety non-oil feel to the skin. The oil is lovingly made with only pure and natural ingredients – it contains no preservatives, colourants, parabens or petrochemical derivatives and can be used with/in place of your normal moisturiser. Alice Leah, Editor of Mum’s Mail tried the oil and had this to say: “I love the rich and luxurious feeling of this facial oil. It smells divine, makes my skin glow and appears to have refined my pores too. It is richer than a moisturiser so I prefer to use it at night only, like a serum/treatment. As it is next to my bed, it’s so easy to apply every evening.” Contact: Ruth Hull, ruthanddoughull@gmail.com, www.facebook.com/RuthHullNaturalTherapies.

Beautiful Life MYscara I was recently told about the new, in-salon treatment MYscara, and, intrigued, decided to investigate. For a long time now I haven’t used mascara. No matter which one I use it always seems to smudge, leaving me with dark shadows by the end of the day. I have my lashes tinted instead. Not really knowing what to expect when it came to MYscara I made an appointment with Brigit Filmer Spa & Skin in Gillits.

During my 45 minute appointment Wanda first cleaned the eye area and then used a primer to ensure no products remained on my eyelashes. She then set to work applying black MYscara liquid (already mixed and also available in blue-black) with a tiny applicator to each individual lash. As she did so, she gently separated the lashes with tweezers as the product is sticky until it dries. She taped my top lashes to my top eyelids (with the eyes closed) and worked on the bottom lashes first. She then removed the tape and did the top lashes. After this very easy process I was shown Wanda’s handiwork. And boy was I surprised – I didn’t know my lashes could look so good! Unlike tinting, MYscara curls the lashes and makes each one thicker (as mascara does), giving me a beautifully glamorous (and smudge-proof) look. Aftercare treatment involves being careful not to cover the eyes (e.g. sleeping on your face) and not using any oil-based products near the eyes. MYscara lasts for about three weeks and needs to be removed in salon with a gel cleanser. The treatment costs +- R200 and comes highly recommended. Move over mascara, take over MYscara! Summer is the Perfect Time to Lose Weight! Summer is the perfect opportunity to lose weight. The warm weather will encourage you to drink water which is a key to weight loss, and with blue skies and warmer weather you will be motivated to get outdoors to enjoy the fresh air and sunshine. Five tips for healthy eating when you are attending functions: • Order a salad, and ask for any dressings or sauces to be served separately, allowing you to put on only a small portion. • Choose what is healthy for you, keeping in mind your weight-loss goals. Don’t be tempted by friends encouraging you to eat more. Choose fish or chicken and choose grilled or baked and not fried. • Skip the bread rolls that are always provided on the table. • Try ordering a starter instead of a main course. • Alcohol is full of calories, so limit your intake. If you must, choose a red wine which has health benefits. If you do have a glass of wine, remember to drink extra water to keep hydration levels up. Losing weight requires commitment, vigilance and ongoing monitoring. The chances of success are greater if you join a programme like the one offered at The Firm – Slimming & Health Clinic. Beautiful Life CACI Non-surgical Face Lift The CACI International Non-surgical Facial and Body Contouring System is an effective, more natural alternative to any other non-surgical cosmetic treatment available today. This is because it just as effective as other treatments, is non-invasive, painless, free of harmful side effects, causes no downtime, and is very affordable. The CACI (Computer Aided Cosmetic Instrument) does not use thermal energy like lasers to wound the skin, but relies on a customised waveform of microcurrent to exercise and tighten the muscles, while improving collagen levels. A Microcurrent Facial and Body Contouring session: • Diminishes or eliminates fine lines, creases and wrinkles. • Hydrates and revitalises skin, making it smoother and softer. • Improves blood circulation and lymphatic drainage. • Restores the “pink glow” of youthful skin. • Visibly firms and contours, lifting the overall droop. • Tightens sagging jowls, double chins and fatty cheeks. • Reduces dark circles or puffiness under eyes. This is an overall treatment for the face and neck and is deeply relaxing. Clients often feel so relaxed that some actually fall asleep during the treatment! Following a treatment, your facial muscles will feel firmer and your skin will be glowing. The CACI Non-surgical Face Lift treatment has been acclaimed by the international media as probably the most exciting beauty development of the last decade. It is now found in the world’s leading clinics, salons and health spas.

Super Psychedelic Purple Juice - The Marriage of Two Cabbages

Deborah Sutherland of Sprout It shares the following about cabbage: “There are amazing benefits of chlorophyll-enriched green veggie juices and smoothies. Now try the combo of cabbage juice and purple cabbage. It is loaded with calcium (the primary mineral for healthy bones and teeth), potassium (which keeps the body’s fluid levels from fluctuating to unhealthy levels), vitamin C (one cup of cabbage provides 51mg or 85% of 60mg daily requirement), vitamin A (supports the body’s immune system), plus it is rich in sulphur which is great for healthy cell walls (hair and nails). We need to include a variety of coloured fruits and vegetables in our diets as all are rich in enzymatic pigments which keep our antioxidant levels up, keeping those free radicals where they belong. The recipe is also good for weight loss. There are 22 calories per cup. Purple cabbage is more than 90% water. Foods with a high water content have low energy density levels which make them a good choice to include in a weight loss programme.” Super Psychedelic Purple Juice Recipe: Take half a purple cabbage and half a green cabbage. Put through your juicer and enjoy. Apple, pear and pineapple complement this juice beautifully. Cabbage juice is the one juice you must drink immediately after juicing. It is a sweet, very filling drink. Sip slowly. The juice is great if you need additional support for the stomach and digestive tract.

Tiny Life Cool Dude Shades There are very few material possessions that I protect with my life from my inquisitive two year old Cooper. On that list is (or should I say WAS) my iPad. Granted, Coop knew his way around it as well as, if not better than, me; that was until, in a flurry of fun and tomfoolery, he smacked the corner of the screen with a kid’s tennis racquet. I was busy in the kitchen preparing breakfast, making bottles for the twins – you know, normal morning duties. I burst into tears when I was presented with the shattered beauty. “Do you know how hard I work to afford to buy you nice things?” Shame, he was devastated and kept echoing, “Mommy I’m sorry.” Not as sorry as I am my boy... On the list of “no not yours, mine”, along with my new iPhone 5, are my colourful range of sunglasses. Anyone that knows me knows I am very seldom without my sunnies. This being said Coop was hell bent on matching his mom and would insist on wearing a pair of mine. If they were not fitted with prescribed lenses it may have been debatable. Last Christmas on Cooper’s list of “oh I would really love” was a pair of his own “cool dude” sunglasses. I had actually seen an advert for Babiators in Mum’s Mail so went online and finally decided on a black pair. Not only are they trendy, but they offer 100% protection from UVA and UVB rays, they are safe to go into your child’s mouth (alongside everything else that finds its way there) and Babiators are extremely durable and will be replaced if broken or lost! Check out www.babiators.com to order your darling a pair. Source: Jane Linley-Thomas, www.janelinleythomas.co.za.

Baby Products You can Trust

Tiny Life

Choosing baby products can be difficult, so using a brand you can trust is important. Purity (a 50 year old brand) recently merged with Elizabeth Anne’s (which has a 42 year history) to add toiletries for babies and toddlers to its baby food and pamper products range. Durban Mum, Nicola Coskey, tried some Elizabeth Anne’s products on her baby. She had this to say: • Elizabeth Anne’s Nappy Rash Cream: Contains zinc and castor oil. The soft cream is easy to administer and the combination forms a protective barrier to prevent nappy rash or burn. If baby already has a red or tender bottom the zinc will help heal the skin. It is important to apply to dry skin for effective results. The only negative is the tube. A plastic (not “metal”) version would help with getting all the cream from the bottom of the tube. • Elizabeth Anne’s Baby Aqueous Cream Bar: This soft baby wash bar contains aqueous cream and smells like a dream. It is not too foamy and leaves baby’s skin soft and fragrant without per- SA’s most successful pre- and postnatal exercise programme now in Durban! fumes or harmful ingredients. Use your hand to create a lather to rub over baby before or during the bathing process. Petit Papoose Reborn Dolls

Nicole’s School of Dance

• Combination of hip hop, modern, aerobics, & beginners salsa • 6 years & up • Develops confidence • Kids’ parties Dance as though no one is watching!

Pauline Hammond developed an interest in Reborn Dolls when her daughter was given one seven years ago. She researched the dolls before trying out the process herself and has since started an exciting little business. Pauline is now a mini manufacturer of New Reborn Dolls (caucasian or biracial), and does complete refurbishments or repairs of Reborn Dolls. The prototype (vinyl limbs and head, separate eyes, body and hair, imported from either the U.K., USA or Germany) is “reborned” or brought to life. The process involves many layers of “skin texturing”, veining, oven baking, micro-hair rooting, body weighting, assembly, dressing and, finally, being snugly placed in a custom-made Anglese Papoose, ready for sale. “Every doll is an exciting challenge, a unique masterpiece,” says Pauline. “There is nothing quite as rewarding as watching a pile of pale limbs, heads and bodies come alive before one’s eyes.”Refurbishments, which generally arrive in a very sad state, are photographed, disassembled, unstuffed, washed and cleaned before being “reborned” all over again. “The beauty about a refurb,” explains Pauline, “is that either the same doll or a completely new doll can be produced. A change of hair colour, eye colour or even skin colour produces a totally different doll, to the absolute delight of the little girl or doll collector who owns it.” These dolls are not ordinary toys; they are collectors’ items. Every Petit Papoose Reborn Doll is a unique, individually numbered, once-off (including the refurbs) collectors’ item. Before

Teen Suicide Prevention Week: 9 – 17 February

Types of clinical depression include: Major depression (a severe form that results in a change of mood that may last for weeks or months), Dysthymia (less severe but can last much longer – up to several years), Bipolar disorder (severe bouts of depression, alternating with extreme happiness called mania), Seasonal depression (also known as Seasonal Affected Disorder, only occurs at certain times of the year). Males and females experience depression differently. Men are more likely to be irritable, sleep deprived and show a loss of interest in daily activities. Women are more upfront about their feelings, feel sad, guilty and worthless. Teens who suffer from depression might sometimes show riskier behaviour with little or no concern about consequences – often turning to alcohol, drugs and promiscuity. Depression can be treated with the right medication and in some cases therapy. Self-diagnosis and medical treatment is never a good idea so seek advice and treatment from professionals. Whilst this is the case, not everybody has the luxury of paying for treatment, and there are helpful things people can do to deal with depression at home. • Talk about it. Depression is usually only fuelled when sufferers bottle their feelings. If you are feeling depressed, talk to someone you trust. • Try not to spend too much time on your own. This may allow depressing or suicidal thoughts to creep up on you. Surround yourself with people who care about you. • Dealing with the fear of being embarrassed is what may keep sufferers from disclosing their feelings to others. But organisations like the South African Depression & Anxiety Group (SADAG) help sufferers deal with depression while keeping all information disclosed private. Source: SADAG. Help! There’s an Alien in My House! So how does your once chatty, sweet child go from telling you everything about their life and always asking you for advice, to responding to your questions with a grunt followed by a slam of their bedroom door? It’s common for parents of teenagers to think that their child’s body has been invaded by an alien species when they become a teen. The teen years are a confusing time for parents, but also for teens. It’s a time for teens to discover who they are and how they relate to the world. This requires an increasing need for privacy to sort through the confusing feelings and thoughts. Parents may find it difficult to understand, but this need for privacy is not a rejection of you. Transitioning from childhood to adulthood requires your teen to learn how to use the right words to express themselves which they may find challenging. Help your child develop his communication skills from a young age by modelling good communication skills yourself. This includes the 2:1 Communication Principle, which requires you to use the same ratio as your ears to your mouth i.e. listen twice as much as you speak. Listening with empathy is critical to counteracting the “you don’t understand!” argument from your teen.

Teenagers usually have a great sense of humour and they often respond better to adults who can see the lighter side of life. Therefore a great way to connect with your teen is to focus on the good times as this helps to make sharing the difficult issues more comfortable. Young Life Smoo Milkshakes: Guilt–free Pleasure Thick creamy milkshakes are delicious, especially on a steamy hot day. Sigma Academy Gives Away iPad

Sigma Academy, featured recently in Mum’s Mail Magazine, sponsored a prize of a brand new iPad 4. The winner was an elated Cirsten van den Heuvel. This is what she had to say: “I actually started crying when I was told I had won an iPad. I have been wanting to get one for a long time now and my birthday was coming up. It came just in time – a day after my birthday was when I received it! I couldn’t believe it and am still in shock about winning the latest iPad 4. I think I entered the competition at least five to 10 times if not every day, then every second day thereafter. I’m loving my iPad. It’s so simple and user friendly – I set up everything within 10 minutes. I love the fact that I can check and reply to my e-mails on the go. Thank you so much to SIMGA academy for sponsoring the prize and to Mum’s Mail for hosting the competition.” SIGMA Academy runs an Apprentice Mentorship Programme for school leavers wanting a gap year. The programme runs for seven months and consists of a number of short courses designed to teach young adults how to earn an income through practical training in Entrepreneurship, Property Investment, Event Management, Internet Business Management, and Investing. Educated Life Benefits of Performing Arts as an Extramural

HAMPTONS PRIMARY SCHOOL

Educating towards Excellence

According to KZN Principal of Rising Star, Gillian Brunings, performing arts benefits include: • Developing one’s ability to deal with emotions • Confidence-building • Integration of cultural values • Development of empathy, imagination and maturity • Encouragement of risk-taking.

Hamptons Primary School (sister school to ever so popular Junglecubs Nursery School) is a small, co-educational independent school that has opened doors in the Durban North area. We Offer: • A curriculum that caters for the holistic development of all its pupils and emphasises the importance of leading a happy, well-balanced life. • A safe, secure and tranquil environment for our students. • SMALL CLASSES (max 18 learners per class). • Air conditioned classrooms. • We offer a special selection of SPORT including swimming, ballet, karate, soccer and netball. • A warm and “homely” aftercare service that includes: a homemade preservative free lunch and help with homework available at Junglecubs Nursery School. A Hamptons child is a happy child. We work hard, we eat healthy, we exercise and most of all we always give our best! We remember these words: “I can!”

Rising Star’s performing arts programme is geared towards different age groups and helps children to: express themselves, speak in public, interact socially, and to think on their feet. Activities for 2013 include: • Musical Theatre classes headed up by Shelley McLean and Gillian Brunings • LAMDA Acting Class – an international examination class offering international benchmarking of you or your child’s performance • Dance fit programme for students aged 9 to 18 – run by Janine Bennewith • Performing arts classes for ages 4 to 18 • Adults (18+) improvisation classes • Two youth theatre productions • Talent Search (starting in February) • December holiday drama camp. “The new CAPS curriculum states that children who have an interest in performing arts should attend extra classes. Only when a child reaches Grade 10, and elects drama as a matric subject, can they expect more exposure to the genre, and even then you are prescribed to by a curriculum and don’t have the time to venture out of the ‘theatrical’ box to explore other ideas,” said Gillian. Rising Star Performing Arts Academy will be holding an information evening in early 2013 to speak to interested parents regarding the life benefits performing arts can offer. To be notified of this event please contact Gillian by e-mail.

Educated Life Helping Children Deal with Change A new year…a new beginning…brings about change… As change is such an integral part of our lives, one of the most important skills you as a parent can help your child develop, is the ability to deal with change. There are everyday changes all children face, such as adjusting to a new school, routine or to new teachers and friends. Many children must face bigger changes as well, following a loss, a move, or a divorce in the family. All change brings some sadness and uncertainty, as well as anticipation and excitement. Educated Life Extramural Choices Priscilla Pearson, principal of Little Noddy Pre-school, Berea, and co-owner of Little Noddy Pre-school, Glenwood, believes that parents should be wise when it comes to enrolling their children in extramural activities. Whilst Little Noddy offers, and endorses, a variety of extramurals for its children, children shouldn’t be overscheduled. They should have enough time to engage in activities that help them to meet their essential milestones. Milestones for Grade 00 and Grade 000 may include language development and colouring in skills. “It’s important that parents attend to the basics,” says Priscilla. “So for instance, if families live in apartments, children need to be taken to the park etc. to get outdoors. Families also need to spend quality time together.”

LOLLIPOP DAYCARE & PRE-SCHOOL

Two of the extramurals offered at the Little Noddy Pre-schools are swimming and Speech & Drama. Swimming, of course, is important for children’s safety. For this activity, children enrolled in lessons via Little Noddy are collected in a bus and taken to reputable swimming schools. Lessons are for children aged two and up and parents can attend open days. Contact Little Noddy for more details. Speech & Drama is particularly helpful for developing language and self-confidence in young children. While it in no way replaces speech therapy it can help children who have a lisp or stutter. It helps all children to pronounce words correctly and express themselves in a controlled and confident manner. It may also be a helpful first step if speech therapy does become necessary. Educated Life Play Learn Know Play Learn Know, A child is a work in progress is a new book by Dr Melodie de Jager and Liz Victor. The book is a guide to help Mom and Dad to shape their child’s body, heart and mind with care and thoughtfulness. It gives simple and playful solutions to developing complex skills preparing children for school and life (ages three to seven). This book is not a checklist or a time sheet to tick off or fill in arbitrarily; it is a road map to guide you along the journey of development. It has no age indicators because every child unfolds developmentally in his own time. Child development is not a race to “get there first”. It is a journey during which there are skills to be developed, knowledge to be discovered and thousands of experiences to be enjoyed along the way to school readiness. A child needs to experience life to become part of life. You can help your child to belong by exposing him to everyday life. You don’t need to know all the answers – teach him from an early age to find answers on his own. Dr Melodie de Jager is a qualified nursery school teacher who completed a master’s degree in science and maths programmes and her doctorate on the role of neurological integration in the learning process. Liz Victor is a qualified teacher with a further diploma in remedial education. She developed the Toptots Mother and Child Workshop programme, which is franchised. Educated Life Coping with Separation Anxiety If your child fears the idea of going to school, cries, throws tantrums, seems sad or physically ill, he may be experiencing separation anxiety. Without the emotional support your child needs, he may be unprepared to make the transition from home to school. Separation anxiety is an unhealthy or debilitating attachment between parents and their child that leaves the child unable to cope without his parents being present. Many educators confirm that parents, too, can suffer from an inability to separate from their child. Good news is that these same parents can also provide the solution to separation anxiety. Careful and consistent planning in advance of your child’s very first day at school can positively influence a successful transition.

Pre-Primary, Language & Teaching Academy

Because children pick up on the emotional cues of parents, anxious parents can project these feelings onto their child. Instead, prepare your child for the first day with enthusiasm. Shop together for a juice bottle, lunchbox and snacks. Pack his schoolbag together. Begin talking about going to school in a positive way. Explain some of the exciting things your child will do and the children he will meet. Talk about the school and teacher by name. Explain that you will take him to school, walk into school together, what the structure of the school day will be and that you will be back to fetch him later. Help your child practise opening and closing his lunchbox, juice bottle and schoolbag. Teach him to apply sunscreen and brush his own hair. But always emphasise and reassure your child that the school staff is there to help with anything he needs. Don’t linger at the school when saying goodbye. Be a loving but decisive parent.

Fun Ways to Read with Your Children

Learning Breakthrough Programme New in South Africa

Reading doesn’t always have to be limited to school. help2read, an NPO focussing on literacy in primary schools, highly advises that parents form the habit of reading with their children at home to make reading a pleasurable learning experience. To ensure that reading is fun, choose books that are of interest to your child. Make reading a priority by setting time aside, whether it’s during the evenings or weekends. The power of the parent-child bond will have a positive effect on your child’s self-esteem. Instil a love for reading and don’t limit your reading to just books.

Is your child still struggling to reach their full potential? WE CAN HELP WITH: • ADHD • Learning Difficulties • Co-ordination Difficulties

Durban North 071 871 9669

Tips to make reading more fun for your children: • Open a book on any page and ask your child to read that page. Make them guess how the book ends or how it begins and then read the entire book to see how the story really turns out. • Books are fabulous: encourage your children to create and write their own books with blank pieces of paper as this will help improve their sentence construction and creativity. • During breakfast, ask your child to read the text on the cereal box, perhaps even create words with the letters or construct stories or sentences using the images on the box. • Have your child help with cooking and actually read the recipe aloud to you as you cook.

Play & Learn • Warm, loving & nurturing environment • Excellent educational programme • Age Groups: 0 - Grade R • Hours: 7am - 5.30pm • Breakfast, lunch & snacks provided • High on hygiene • Large outdoor play area

Be a good role model to your kids and let them see you read. Share your excitement when you enjoy a good book as this will encourage them to do the same. Party Life Party Décor on a Budget The Party Wizard takes the fuss out of décor for a party – whether it be children’s parties, adult parties, kitchen teas, baby showers or weddings. Planning the décor is all done via e-mail or telephone so there’s no travelling involved, making it easy and cost effective. If it’s your child’s next party you are planning, simply contact Clare Sykora of The Party Wizard with an idea of a theme. Clare will research the theme and propose some ideas that fit with your budget. Once your approval is received Clare will have the design made up using themed printables and post these to you. Where the budget allows, Clare can go to town adding all sorts of elements to make kiddies’ dream parties come to life – and in the process make Mum’s life a lot easier! Others may opt for the simple option of a few items to bring the theme across. Clare is not involved with setup in any way, which also helps to reduce costs. About four weeks’ notice for a party is usually required although Clare can accommodate urgent requests. T/A MYU ENTERPRISE

Gift Wrapping Skills

Do your wrapped gifts look like you dragged the paper out of the recycling? Or does your once pristine gift wrap transform into an untidy mess of sticky tape and bunched up folds once you get your hands on it? Well then a Wrap for You course is for you! Ingrid Burton of Wrap for You recently visited the Mum’s Mail offices to teach staff members how to wrap gifts properly. By the end of the session we had turned out (almost) perfect creations – having used Ingrid’s very clear, simple instructions and tips. We learnt the basics which included what paper to use (thick enough not to be see-through and preferably neutral in colour), how to measure paper using offcuts of ribbon (prevents excessive wastage), the eyeball method (which ensures straight, neat lines) and how to mark the paper (by creasing strategically to cut straight lines). Other helpful tips included always working away from you, where to fold the paper so that the end result was perfectly neat, and using double-sided tape to create a “magic”, sticky-tape-free effect. We learnt how to wrap a basic square box and then how to create the beautiful Japanese pleating effect (either straight or diagonal) to give our gifts that professional look. Awkward gifts that don’t wrap easily with paper were given an extra cellophane treatment which hid a multitude of sins. An especially helpful lesson was how to tie bows on gifts – something best demonstrated rather than verbally explained. Ingrid sells paper, ribbons and embellishments at the I Heart Market or at her home office in Durban North. She also conducts basic and advanced wrapping courses. Party Life Ben 10 Omniverse Ben 10 is back in a brand new season. He’s older, more independent and saving the world yet again! The first volume of season 1 is out now on DVD and is one of Cartoon Network’s finest releases to date, something awesome to add to your Ben 10 collection.

Children’ s Birthday Party Specialist All Ages 1 - 101

Free Magic Gift Set and Free Goodie Bags! Meet Snowy the Live Bunny!

Adrian the Magician

The new season in a nutshell: Ben 10 Omniverse is the latest instalment of the hit Cartoon Network franchise. With Gwen and Kevin off to college, Ben Tennyson looks forward to being a solo superhero with his brand new Omnitrix. Grandpa Max has other ideas. He assigns Ben a new plumber partner, Rook, who is highly skilled with his Proto-tool, but lacks any field experience – especially on Earth. Ben has absolutely no desire to be a tour guide, especially since a mysterious new villain has him in his sights! No worries, right? Ben’s defeated all kinds of evil, and is quick to remind everyone that he’s saved the universe at least a dozen times. But, even with 10 brand new aliens at his disposal, Ben may have finally met his match! This new villain, Khyber the Huntsman, sees Ben as the ultimate prey, and has a deadly ace up his sleeve - or rather, by his side. Khyber’s dog wears the Predatrix, and with it, is able to become any one of the galaxy’s 10 deadliest predators!

Washi Tape Washi Tape is a printed Japanese Washi Paper Tape that is self-adhesive and comes in rolls like ordinary sticky tape. Washi Tape can be used for many different things from scrapbooking to gift wrapping and whatever else you can come up with; decorate a pen holder, close gift bags, create a unifying effect on grouped pot plants or ornaments, zhoosh up some fairy cakes, put it on stationery or turn pegs into statement items with a simple strip of Washi Tape. The tapes come in a huge variety of colours and patterns including yellow chevron, pink hearts, vintage roses, silver stars, red stars, birds and flowers, lace, polka dots and more. Others have printed words, such as “Made with Love” and “Love”. Many are partially transparent in places which allows the colour of the material underneath to show through.

Relaxed Life

Luxury on Your Doorstep

Calling all exhausted businesswomen, tired mums and frazzled multitaskers! The Royal Palm Three Cities Hotel opposite Gateway Theatre of Shopping has launched a luxurious new wing aimed at women. I was treated to a night at the hotel in one of the specially designed rooms recently, and revelled in all it had to offer. First of all, parking was a breeze (free underground parking located in the street behind Palm Boulevard). After checking in, I was shown to my room which was located in a special wing reserved for ladies only. The apartment was SO luxurious. It was designed as one long room with partial divisions between toilet, bathroom, bedroom, kitchen and lounge. The kitchen contained a microwave, coffee machine (easy to use), fridge and sink – giving guests the freedom to prepare their own food – unusual in a 4 star hotel. I leapt at the chance of a bubble bath and poured the whole jar of bubbles provided into the bath, lit the vanilla-scented candles and soaked away a month’s stresses in volumes of foam. I was intrigued by the many bathroom extras – items not found even in many 5 star hotels – a hair straightener and a good selection of toiletries. After relaxing with a couple of ladies’ magazines, I ordered room service from the specially designed ladies’ menu; delicious and filling, the dishes were obviously low fat. After a restful night I enjoyed a variety-filled continental breakfast buffet in the restaurant downstairs, and then finished off my special time away with a back massage in the Spa Royale. For a ladies’ night of luxury right on your doorstep, give the Royal Palm a call, 031 – 310 6900, www.threecities.co.za.

Just Imagine... Mosaics

Relaxed Life

Get your own or your children’s creative juices flowing and organise a Mosaic Party for that special occasion at a venue of your choice. Just Imagine Mosaics conducts parties for adults and children or for groups, such as kitchen teas, craft clubs, groups of friends or school and pre-school groups. They will either come to your venue, with supplies, or will host your party at their Just Imagine studio in Kloof, Durban. Just Imagine will supply trays of mosaic in pre-cut form for the guests, glue, brushes and grout and various blanks to work on – for example, a cross, a mirror or a blank board. Inclusive of all materials, parties cost R110 per person. The party lasts for two to three hours depending on numbers, age and aptitude and participants will go home with a completed, creative and personal piece of art work. Apart from travelling to venues, and conducting parties at their active, beautiful studio in the lovely area of Kloof, Just Imagine Mosaics also do commissions on request and are affiliated to the Mosaic Association of South Africa. They have a gallery and periodically participate in exhibitions. Contact: Sheila Nichol, Just Imagine Mosaics, sheila.nichol@gmail.com, 083 782 7810, www.kznmosaics.co.za. Relaxed Life

The Necessary Accessory

NEO was conceptualised and created under the great African sun by two manga-loving mamas who were tired of constantly searching for quirky, functional but most of all affordable accessories for school lunches, lazy beach days, picnics in the park, corporate meetings etc. Divinely inspired by many and much, they pooled their talents and designed their own range called NEO (naughty ergonomic origins). The range encompasses super cool, stylish and functional neoprene lunch totes, beach bags, wine coolers, ipad and laptop sleeves, pencil cases, in other words, any item deemed to be a necessary can’t-live-without accessory. The Yumpak Lunch Totes are “oh so yummy”. You can take them to work, gym, school, daycare or picnic in the park, the choice is yours. It will keep your “foodie” delights well insulated in cool, creative style. No more grubby messes. The totes are machine washable and stain resistant and are available in a variety of funky prints. Let your vino travel in style, too, in the Vinokula wine tote (available in a single or double). And with Vinokula you can say no to paper or plastic as a NEO wine tote offers the Rolls Royce treatment – no more banged up bottles, just a smooth ride. Apart from personal use NEO accessories also make great corporate gifts. NEO can customise a lunch tote or wine cooler with your company or school name or logo and can brand the plain-coloured totes for you. Just send them the artwork. Relaxed Life Clever Tips for Weight Loss Durban mom, Laura-May Louw, successfully lost weight recently and has maintained her new shape. She shares with us her interesting weight-loss tips: • Drink lots of water. To work out how much you should drink daily, use this formula: take your weight and round it up to the next ten (e.g. 62kg rounded up to 70kg); divide by 2 (= 3.5 glasses); + 2 glasses (= 5.5 glasses); add 1 litre (4 glasses) for living at the coast and a further 1 litre for every hour of exercise. Water keeps the system flushed and prevents water retention. • Cut the evening carb. Make your last carb at lunch and simply remove the carb from your evening meal. This takes away the bloated feeling and will leave you feeling just as full without it. Ensure you have three meals plus two to three healthy snacks. A good idea is to have a veg snack with cottage cheese in the afternoon. Regular eating keeps your metabolism active which helps to burn calories. • Exercise in the weight-loss zone. LauraMay’s number one trick here is to go for low intensity exercise with duration (this burns fat). The ideal is to start with 40 minutes exercise (e.g. level 1 on the gym cycle) plus 20 minutes circuit (without sprints in between) three times a week.

Have you not had enough of this crime? If so, why not then use your cell phone to help fight it and keep your hands clean? Your eyes and cell are your only involvement. See how many other residents in your area are already taking part. JOIN THEM! Let’s fight this crime together!

• Watch the scale – or don’t! Don’t become obsessive about weighing yourself. Also, the best is to go for a Body Fat Percentage scale that measures muscle mass, body fat content and visceral fat (the fat surrounding vital organs). These are available at nutritionist offices and some gyms. • Change your mindset. Eating/exercise should become a way of life, not a temporary thing to be endured. iPhone Headphones Make the Ideal Gift Bowers & Wilkins offer a range of top-end headphones that would make the ideal gift for any music lover or Apple-aficionado. As you’d expect from B&W, all its headphones produce high-performance sound that is the result of countless hours of testing and tuning with some of the best, most experienced engineers and listeners in the business. The headphones are designed, engineered and tuned by the same engineers responsible for other award-winning B&W products, such as the Zeppelin Air and the high-end 800 Series Diamond speakers found in Abbey Road Studios. The C5 In-ear Headphones: B&W C5 inear, noise-isolating headphones offer pristine sound quality while you are out and about. The innovative Secure Loop design keeps C5 comfortably in place, and aids fit and performance. It is an ingenious innovation where a cushioned loop fixes quickly and comfortably in the inner ridge of the user’s ear. The proprietary Micro Porous Filter enables C5 to produce a wonderfully open, natural performance, perfect for longer listening sessions. Other key advances include the advantage of limiting noise bleed, and together with the noise-isolating properties of the sealed fit, this allows users to lose themselves in flawless audio. C5 has been designed specifically to work with Apple devices, and comes supplied with a “Made for iPod, iPhone, iPad” remote and microphone. Audio playback will work with most devices that have a standard headphone output.
