My Aunt came to stay for 10 days last month. She lives in a little “dorpie” called Theunissen – ever heard of it? Don’t worry, most people haven’t. Their town is so small that we once rode our horses into the corner cafe to buy a cooldrink, and the Samantha Baldwin Sales Associate - CEA shopkeeper did not even bat an eyelid, as Cell: 082 466 0459 if it was “normal” to do that. My Aunt comes armed with a multitude of talents: she cooks a mean batch of beetroot, and she also has a Hitler-like approach to my kids’ rooms, which she attacks on an annual basis. She is a tidy-holic and loves to extract as much garbage from their rooms as possible. The last time she was here, we eradicated close to 8 black bags of junk. This time, only 4...perhaps the kids are getting craftier at hiding their rubbish away before she strikes? We also take great delight in showing off Durban and the Midlands each time she visits. A highlight was the weekend we spent at Saddle and Trout, and although the wind blew gales, the Midlands at this time of the year is truly stunning. We’re off to Emdoneni Lodge soon (near Hluhluwe), and cannot wait to interact with their wild cats again. What is YOUR favourite place to get away from it all? Where are you going to these July holidays? Let me know so we can share your ideas with our readers: editor@mumsmail.com.

Laidback Life Book Reviews by Books & Books • Creepy Hollow 2: The Faerie Prince by Rachel Morgan. Guardian trainee, Violet Fairdale, is just weeks away from one of the most important occasions of her life: graduation. After messing up big time by bringing a human into the faerie realm, she needs to step up her game. Everything would be fine if she wasn’t forced to partner with Ryn, her ex-friend, ex-enemy, current “sort of friend”. On top of that, the insane Unseelie Prince is still on the loose, free to “collect” as many talented faeries as he can find and Vi is at the top of his list. Add in other issues, and graduation is about to become the least of Vi’s problems. • Call it Dog by Marli Roode. Jo returns to South Africa after ten years in the U.K. to cover the riots sweeping the Jo’burg township of Alex. Nico, her estranged Afrikaner father, reappears and asks her to help prove his innocence in the murder of a black man abducted by the security forces decades earlier. As they set off on a road trip through S.A.’s now-unfamiliar landscape, it becomes clear that Nico knows more about the murder than he is letting on and Jo begins to wonder whether she is his accomplice or his captive. Call It Dog asks whether justice and truth are more important than the bonds of loyalty and love, and explores what it’s like to feel you no longer belong in the land of your birth – or to your own family. • Dead Man’s Time by Peter James. A vicious robbery at a secluded Brighton mansion leaves its elderly occupant dying. And millions of pounds’ worth of valuables has been taken. Detective Superintendent Roy Grace rapidly learns there is one priceless item of sentimental value that the old woman’s powerful family cherishes above all else. And they are fully prepared to take the law into their own hands and will do absolutely anything to get it back. Within days, Grace is racing against the clock, following a murderous trail that leads him from the shady antiques’ world of Brighton, across Europe, and all the way back to the New York waterfront gang struggles of 1922, chasing a killer driven by the force of one man’s greed and another man’s fury. This is the series everyone’s reading! • Saving the White Lions by Linda Tucker. In this captivating, suspenseful memoir, Linda Tucker takes us from her first encounter being surrounded by white lions to learning their secrets from the medicine women who came to her rescue. She describes her perilous struggle to protect the sacred white lion from the merciless and mafia-like trophy-hunting industry, armed only with her indomitable spirit and total devotion. Compellingly written in the intimate style of a journal, she describes with unflinching honesty her fears, doubts, hopes, and dreams, all the while unfolding for us an unforgettable tale of adventure, romance, spirituality and most of all, justice. When I realised the extent of what I’d lost, my stomach dropped through the floor. My bookkeeper’s laptop crashed last month, but this time we had learnt our lesson and Pastel was being backed up daily by an external service provider (like Evolution Computers). Business Life Cancer Benefits Policy Definitions Medical aid schemes continue to battle increasing claims for oncology treatment and many have systematically imposed limits on the amount they will pay. Many clients have added a Severe Illness Benefit or increased cover on their existing life insurance policy to defend against this growing risk. But this alone doesn’t ensure their needs will be met. Life insurance companies pay claims based on specific benefit definitions and it is these definitions we must consider rather than the marketing endeavours of insurers or advisors. Life insurers structure benefits for cancer in one of two ways: • Severity-based claims definitions – the client receives a percentage of their insured amount depending on the stage of cancer diagnosed. Here, lower stages (earlier diagnoses) pay as little as 25% of the insured amount and only the highest stages (highest severities) get 100% payouts. • On-diagnosis claims definitions – the client is paid 100% irrespective of the stage (severity) of cancer between stage I and stage IV.

Further complicating the benefits is that cancers in-situ (i.e. when cancer is diagnosed so early that it has not yet met the minimum benefit requirements of Stage 1) are often not covered at all despite the significant costs of treatment to avert progression to Stage 1. Increased cancer awareness and the importance of early diagnosis means that, statistically, 60% of cancer claims are for Stage 1 diagnoses. This means that being certain about the exact benefit definitions on your policy is critical to ensure that you are paying for a benefit that will pay out as you anticipate.

Tired of raucous family restaurants, restaurateur Jacqui Itopoulos, decided to open a sophisticated, yet reasonably priced family restaurant of her own – Olive & Oil. That was eight years ago. Now there are five branches of this Mediterranean-styled restaurant in KZN. Lasting through tough economic times must certainly be due as much to the “comfortable food made well”, as it is to Jacqui’s ability to adapt to her customers’ changing needs. To this end Olive & Oil now offers a simple lunchtime menu seven days a week, with small portions, a set price and a guarantee to have patrons out in one hour should they need to be. I had lunch at Olive & Oil, Umhlanga, recently, with a friend Sally Beaumont. The lunch menu comprises two courses (R99.95) or three courses (R119.95) accompanied by a free glass of wine. I went for the Peri Peri Beef Strips starter (not too hot), the Chicken Thermidor (tasty without being too creamy), a yummy Crème Brûleé and Personalised cooking white wine. Sally had the Spicy Fish Cake lessons for domestic by a professional (very good), Fillet Santorini (a melt-in-the- workers chef, at your home. mouth, succulent dish that exceeded exTracey van der Walt pectations) and red wine. The service was 079 695 4898 excellent – something that speaks vol- www.domesticchef.co.za umes to me – and the atmosphere calm and stylish.

Home Life Turn Bottles into Carpets Recycled material shopping bags, recycled paper, clipboards made from bamboo – all these featured at the recent Nouwens Carpets launch. And so did the carpet manufacturer’s new carpet range containing recycled plastic drinking bottles. Bottles turned into carpets! Indeed. Nouwens Ecotwist carpets contain at least 20% recycled postconsumer drink bottles. The Berckley range is engineered from 100% recycled postconsumer drink bottles. And just before you think plastic bottles couldn’t possibly be comfortable underfoot, think again. Ecotwist has a luxurious cut pile that has a “wool” look and is soft to handle, while Berckley is similarly soft and “wool” looking. A big plus for consumers is the fact that Ecotwist is affordable, Berckley is hardwearing, and both are easy to clean. But with so much emphasis on eco-friendly products, reported Dave Nemeth, trend report for the IID, consumers can be subjected to “greenwashing”. This is simply false advertising of products as green or environmentally friendly, without them having undergone • Swimming Pool Heat Pumps the necessary testing or international • Geyser Heat Pumps grading. Checking labels is very important • Industrial Filtration when it comes to this issue. Both Ecotwist • Solar/Heat Retention Covers and Berckley have been thoroughly tested • Automated Pool Covers by the SABS and are VOC compliant with • Domestic & Industrial Salt Chlorination an S.A. Green Star Rating so consumers • pH Dosing Systems • Liquid Solar Pool Covers can be assured of their “green” content. The launch was a celebratory affair with lots of super giveaways and the announcement of the Nouwens Appointed Dealer of the Year (Concept Carpets) and the Nouwens Platinum Partner of the Year (Tile and Carpet Centre). Previous demos include a coffee table, a bench planter, and an iPad stand. “It’s important to keep it simple, easy, affordable, practical, fun and funky,” says Andrew. A range of Do-It-Yourself DVDs will soon be available. As for the Rainwater Harvesting, Andrew and his team provide a full, off-the-grid system, resulting in drinking water fresh from the sky. The water is filtered to remove any nasties and to ensure it is crystal clear and odourless. No more chlorine taste. Home Organic veggie gardens continue to flourish even as we step into winter. Andrew says it’s amazing how people are really getting into growing their own veggies and herbs at home. Home Organic now has a Facebook page where they upload daily tips to help keep your veggie garden in tip-top shape.

Home Life GB Foam and Mattress Established in 1994, GB Foam and Mattress manufactures a range of premium quality beds and foam mattresses, primarily for the private and hospitality markets. All their products are supplied with factory warranties and by using good quality high density foam, they are able to customise customer requirements in terms of comfort, size and price. Recent developments in the foam industry has enabled GB Foam to improve the quality of their range by including top grade latex and memory foam into their top end mattress range. Mattress coverings have also been upgraded and in keeping with the “going green” concept, these fabrics incorporate more natural fibres e.g. the Chelsea Supreme Cover in soft “Bamboo” knit. GB Foam also makes a range of specialised medical mattresses for hospitals and clinics, as well as supplying a range of bedding products for student accommodation. Healthy Life Know What You’re Drinking Water from air! How is that possible? Well, possible it is with the water-making machine from H2Oasis. Using the available humidity the water machine collects, filters and chills water ready for drinking. With numerous filters and multiple UV light technology sections within the machine, the water is not only pure but tastes great too! It is like having your own purification plant in your home or office and furthermore you will have peace of mind knowing precisely what you’re drinking. The environmental impact of using one of these amazing machines is also a plus, as they help to reduce the number of plastic bottles used and transported around the country. The water is collected from our abundant humid air and not from what precious little resource we have available at our local water supply. Another plus is that the H2Oasis will act as a dehumidifier. It is also super easy to install as no plumbing, water lines or pipes are required. Machines available can manufacture from 10 to 100 litres of drinking water daily. So if you are tired of having to lift, store and keep track of heavy bottles in your home or work place give H2Oasis a call. Alice Leah of Mum’s Mail had this to say about this magical water machine: “When Steve first told me about a machine that makes its own water from air, I thought he was pulling a fast one. Yet seeing is believing! We have had an H2Oasis water machine for a few months now, and I can honestly say it is the best, healthiest move we have made. No more plastic bottles! No more waiting for a water bottle delivery. Steve is quick and efficient and the water tastes fantastic!” Contact: H2Oasis, 084 562 2334, info@h2oasis.co.za, www.h2oasis.co.za.

Healthy Life The Sore Throat Mums know sore throats well! Sore throats may be caused by dry air, allergies, a common cold or by Group A Streptococcus bacteria (known as strep throat). Untreated strep throat may lead to serious complications.

Strep infection produces red swollen tonsils with white patches at the back of the throat.

The cold virus is associated with a low grade fever, cough, postnasal drip, congestion or runny nose. A fever greater than 38.3°C is more likely strep. Beware, strep may be present without a fever. Strep may cause the glands in the neck to swell and become tender. A common cold can cause a painful sore throat but with strep there is severe pain on swallowing, nausea, loss of appetite, headache and stomach pains. Rarely, strep throat may be associated with a rash (Scarlet Fever) starting on the head and neck which spreads to the rest of the body. Strep throat requires antibiotics. You remain contagious within 24 hours of taking antibiotics, so practise regular hand washing and do not share utensils. Throw out your toothbrush after a strep infection. Lozenges, throat sprays and lollies can help ease the pain.

Simple home remedies to ease the pain include: salt water gargle, steam inhalation and adequate fluid intake. Avoid citrus drinks which irritate the throat. Use a pain reliever such as Paracetamol. Avoid Aspirin in children as it can lead to a potentially fatal condition called Reyes Syndrome.

GNLD Products
Why children’s needs are greater: Children go through phenomenal growth and development during their early years. They produce more than a billion new cells each day and it takes a lot of nutrients to support this rapid growth. Young tissues and organ systems need energy and the right balance of nutrients to develop properly. This is also a time when cognitive skills and personalities are developing, and scientific studies have found links between levels of certain nutrients and mental performance and mood. Rapid physical growth and mental development during childhood and adolescence requires an increased supply of both energy and nutrients to keep the body’s metabolic pathways running smoothly. Because their metabolic rates are on average so high, nutrient abundance and balance are particularly essential during these early stages of life.

Healthy Life After Holidays it’s Back to School and Work It may be holidays now but, dread it or love it, you have got to go back to school or work soon! Here are some tips to help you manage: • First-day chaos: If you’re headed to a new school, try to arrange a visit before classes begin. Explore areas of interest like sports facilities, library or science labs. Your first day is also the time to bring in school supplies and paperwork. Pack your backpack the night before school starts, ensuring you have basic supplies (such as notebooks, pens, pencils, a calculator) and any school forms that need to be handed in. • Pre-pack easy on-the-go meals: these could include anything from sandwiches and wraps to whole wheat rolls! Some great combinations are: tuna sandwich with Weigh-Less Reduced Oil Dressing; sweet-chilli chicken, lettuce and carrot wrap or a ham and fat-free cottage cheese low G.I. roll. • Plan ahead: get a wall calendar or personal planner. Mark projects as they are assigned and list any other time commitments you have. If the calendar becomes too full, hold off until things calm down. • Important healthy eating habits: eat a good breakfast. Stick to high-fibre cereals like Weigh-Less muesli and add a yoghurt; snacks are endless, e.g. fruit, crackers, Marmite, Bovril, fish paste on crackers, yoghurts, cereal bars, rice cakes and Knorr Cup-a-Soup Lite. Also remember your eight glasses of water a day. Suppers can be just as easy – make double portions of everything and freeze. For recipes go to www.weighless.co.za. Contact: Weigh-Less Call Centre, 0861 100 551. WIN WIN WIN Mum’s Mail has 3 hampers of Weigh-Less Products to give away to 3 lucky readers. Visit www.mumsmail.com to enter.

“Hi, my name is Ursula and I need to lose weight”
SOLUTION
A self-confessed weight-watcher who wasn’t getting the results I wanted and needed. With each attempt at dieting, I would last a week and then lapse into the same old bad behaviour.
THAT MAKES BURNING FAT AS EASY
AS 1, 2, 3.
Then I found Curves Complete! Exercise, meals plans and coaching all in one place! I perused the diet plan and I was surprised to find a range of foods that I could and would really enjoy. I considered the exercise plan and joined the dots – this was something I could do! Since joining Curves Complete, I can honestly say that I haven’t looked back. I’m no longer nervous to look in the mirror when trying on a new top at the mall. I’m not at a loss for something healthy for dinner anymore and I’m quietly confident when striding about, walking my route each day. Curves Complete has really succeeded when no other plan could.

Healthy Life Birthmarks in Newborns There are many skin conditions that can occur in the neonatal period. These include birthmarks (naevi), infective and vascular skin conditions. Birthmarks in this age group are becoming increasingly common. Parents are very concerned when the newborn baby presents with various types of pigmented birthmarks. There are different types of congenital melanocytic birthmarks. These are divided into different categories depending on their size: • Small birthmarks are lesions under 20mm in diameter. They are common and occur in about 1% of newborns. One or more lesions may be noted in the newborn. • Intermediate birthmarks are between 2cm and 20cm and may be single or multiple lesions. • Giant birthmarks (bathing trunk naevi) mean that infants have a couple of small birthmarks on the face and trunk. In addition, there is a large melanocytic naevus extending over a wide surface area. This birthmark has a significant risk of eventually developing into malignant melanoma. Early plastic surgery to manage this condition is required. There is also a risk of meningeal involvement.

Small congenital birthmarks have a small potential for malignant melanoma and very rarely undergo malignant change before puberty. A novel technique of monitoring these birthmarks is known as Mole Mapping/Dermoscopy. This type of assessment uses a pattern analysis of the birthmarks to determine if there is a chance of developing melanoma.

Beautiful Life Clearing Lotion Clearing Lotion by Sh’Zen is a unique spot control lotion with exceptional drying abilities to help clear up breakouts – fast! It has a blend of six essential oils that heal and repair skin: Lemon, Juniper, Lavender, Geranium, Cypress and Bergamot. Other ingredients include: • Kaolin – a natural clay with anti-microbial properties. The clay also helps to subdue swelling and irritation of pimples. • Calamine, which dries the skin and absorbs excess oil, has anti-bacterial and anti-allergy properties which help to relieve irritation and soothe the skin. • Zinc Oxide – this acts as an astringent to dry and relieve irritation and promote the fast healing of spots. • Salicylic acid, a naturally occurring acid (from willow bark) that works as a keratolytic agent. It encourages the sloughing of dead skin cells. • Colloidal Sulphur which prevents bacteria from spreading and helps to unclog blocked pores. To use, apply Clearing Lotion before bed, after cleansing. Apply directly onto the pimple using a cottonwool earbud. Rinse off in the morning. This is safe to apply as often and regularly as needed. DO NOT shake the bottle. Apply only the pink sediment to the affected spot. Clearing Lotion is fast acting, and helps to penetrate into painful eruptions and restore skin to radiant health. It brings relief from painful spots without leaving any greasiness, and is wonderful for teenagers and adults. Results: Clear, beautiful spotfree skin!

Young Life The Outside of a Horse is Good for the Inside of a Man Sarah Kennedy and Claire Bolstridge, who have ridden horses since their youth, took over the Mount Edgecombe Stables several years ago and decided to “try it out for two years”. Ten years later the Stables now offers weekly lessons to 60+ children, has 48 horses living on the premises, 10 of which are owned by the stables, and is much in demand as a wedding photo venue and for hippotherapy (horse therapy, mostly for the disabled). Lessons start with complete beginners and disciplines include show jumping, dressage, gymkhana, equitation and showing. Western riding, endurance riding and cross country (fences) are not offered, but outrides of up to two hours into the nearby sugarcane farmlands are.
Silver Stirrup Riding School
Claire 083 679 1870
Horse riding is now a recognised school sport, and an active inter-schools’ league has spawned a greater demand for riding. An instructor who is qualified to teach riding for the disabled visits the Stables twice weekly and the Stables also provides hippotherapy to children at Livingstone School twice a term. “The response has been huge,” said Sarah “and there is so much demand that we simply can’t meet the need.” Whilst Sarah enjoys competing, both she and Claire call riding their “therapy time”. Other adults have found the same, with a number of parents and “bucket list” riders signing up for lessons. But it seems that not only humans have enjoyed what Mount Edgecombe Stables has to offer – the horse star of the film Black Stallion (which, incidentally, is not black!) was stabled there while the film premiered at Gateway! Why not join the ranks of those who think that “looking between a horse’s ears is better than Prozac”. Contact: Mt Edgecombe Stables, 083 287 8742 (Sarah), 083 679 1870 (Claire). www.mumsmail.com

Young Life Life Talk for Parents Several years ago Izabella Little-Gates began writing down important things she wanted to share with her daughter. These shared thoughts turned into a book, Life Talk for a Daughter, which elicited so much response from teens and parents, that Izabella started the Life Talk Forum. Armed, then, with issues that teens and parents were really grappling with, Izabella added to her first book, and went on to publish Life Talk for a Son, followed by Life Talk for Parents. In the latter, Izabella speaks in her forthright yet equitable manner, raising topics that we as parents worry about but may be too afraid, or too unskilled, to deal with. In this book she teaches us to understand our teens. Topics covered include teen sexuality, teen drinking and drug use, pornography, and the end-of-school/ university time. She emphasises the need for communication, discusses thorny issues like pocket money and curfews, and raises the difficult subject of divorce and its effects on teens. She touches on the inestimable value of family, boundary setting and, finally, love. Because of her style and even-handed approach, Izabella’s book is easy to accept, raising issues that we as parents MUST face. It helps us to think, to work things out for ourselves and will, I have no doubt, engender further discussion. In fact, Life Talk for Parents ends with an invitation for readers to contact Life Talk via their website and share their thoughts. Life Talk for Parents is highly recommended reading. Tiny Life Placenta Encapsulation
COMFYBUMZ
Placentophagy is the act of consuming one’s own placenta for cultural, religious or medicinal reasons. This has been reported for decades to help stop the baby blues and diminish post-partum fatigue. Some women have mixed it into a smoothie or even taken it raw to tap into its powerful effects. For many who feel squeamish about this, there is another option: encapsulation. Encapsulation: • Prevents and lessens the risk of postpartum depression. • Replenishes iron from blood loss during birth and prevents post-birth anaemia in the mother. • Lends a consistent flow of Oxytocin (the love hormone) long after the birth euphoria ends. • Provides the HPL hormone to help establish early and healthy milk supply for breastfeeding. • Stabilises constantly fluctuating hormones post birth. • Replenishes B vitamins and energy that were used during the birth process. • Protects from infection and bleeding due to retained placenta tissue or membranes. Organic Birth’s services include placenta encapsulation in two methods: placenta powder and placenta tincture which can be used homoeopathically for the mother and baby. “I feel fantastic. I am ridiculously content and happy, energised, I’m even tempered and I haven’t had a single moment of being overwhelmed. I can’t recommend placenta encapsulation highly enough. I’m sure there are many factors contributing to my feelings of wellbeing, but I’m sure a lot is due to these magic little pills.” Laura, Cape Town. Fight Morning Sickness
Play on the Go
For half the women in the world, morning sickness spoils the joy of early pregnancy. “Morning” may in fact be any time – day or night – and by the time the queasiness comes to an end by week 12, some women may have had a 24/7 condition. To help you manage pregnancy nausea: • Eat a morning snack. Nausea is usually worse in the morning which may be due to the eight/nine hours without food when you sleep, which leads to low blood sugar. • Snack on high protein products. If you are struggling with 24/7 nausea, eat high protein snacks every two hours. Carry a small strip pack of nuts with you (great source of protein and minerals). Montagu Dried Fruit & Nuts stores have some tasty dried fruit and nut mixes to choose from. • Cook bland and balanced food. A U.K. study suggests that morning sickness may occur with a high intake of sugars, sweeteners, alcohol, caffeine and meat, and low consumption of cereals. Your diet during pregnancy needs to be balanced with plenty of vegetables and fruit, whole grain and unrefined carbohydrates. Eat small meals. • Rest when you can. If ever you needed sleep, it’s during pregnancy. Overtiredness can cause nausea, so try to have regular 15-minute power naps during the day. • Sniff scents. This may help with morning sickness, such as lemon, green apple or peppermint. Scent a handkerchief and hold it up to your face if you feel nausea descending.
The perfect gift for busy kids-on-the-go!

Tiny Life Share a Little, Save a Life I never thought it would happen to me... on 23 September 2007 we lost Matthew to leukaemia after a short battle of just four weeks. Looking back over the last five years or so, I realise how much more prevalent cancer in children has become. Or perhaps it always has been and I only turned on my antennae since my ordeal.
Newborn Baby Outreach To provide newborn babies with essentials that many of us take for granted e.g. clothes, baby blankets, baby soap, powder and vaseline. Mums, please donate newborn baby clothes, baby products and blankets you no longer require to give these little angels and their Mums a true “Positive Beginning” to life. Positive Beginnings - CRC non-profit organisation reg no 028-472-NPO
There is an opportunity in September to partner with the Mum’s Mail High Tea in order to raise funds for The Sunflower Fund, a fund that looks after leukaemia patients and their families – in my eyes a very worthy cause and I say this through the heart of experience. Even though Matthew’s battle was so short, the impact that the fund had will stay with me for life. They gave us advice when we needed it, showed empathy when things fell apart and have been journeying with us for the last five years sharing our grief and helping us remember Matthew in a powerful and meaningful way. It is not the normal cycle of life. Children shouldn’t die before their parents. It has been the hardest thing as a mom to deal with. You are expected to have the strength of “ten bears”, to endure it all, and then to carry on with life as expected. Your heart never heals, but is held in “cotton wool” by the efforts and love shown by The Sunflower Fund, friends, doctors and last but not least, church. This Tea ranks high on my healing list, as it reminds us all how important it is to participate in something that has the ability to save a mom’s heart from the ache of losing a child to such a dreaded cancer. • Have a plan if your child gets separated from you in a public place. As soon as your child cannot see you, he/she must sit down and not move until you find them. It’s easier to find a child who remains in one place. If someone tries to take them, even to help (even if a policeman in uniform), they must not go but must rather recite your cell phone number (which children as young as three should know) and ask the person to phone you immediately. • Establish a routine for picking your children up from outings. Agree on who is allowed to fetch your child and a code word which must be used in the event that you are unable to fetch your child. The child must ask for the code word from anyone who is not on the “Who I can go with” list. If the wrong code is given, the child must not go with the person even if the person is an uncle, friend etc.

Nurturing and Enhancing Children’s Potential
Life Coach, Educational & Parenting Consultant
In our daily lives, we become absorbed with our responsibilities and challenges and forget to let go and simply have fun. Why do we need fun? Because it gives us energy and enables us to be more loving and caring. Generally, it makes life more enjoyable, and it feeds our creativity and fun-loving abilities. It is very good for the soul and relationship building. We should make fun a part of our daily lives. Fun is a very important ingredient for all of us. If you are able to have fun with your kids, you will be a more balanced parent and your family will enjoy a more balanced relationship. It lightens our hearts and restores our bodies. Unfortunately for many, the serious things can take over so that we get out of the habit of having fun, forget to do it, or have not ever known what a difference it can make.

Educated Life A Castle, Culture & Wildlife Appreciation • Coedmore Castle: Way back in 1855 a beautiful stone home resembling a small castle was built by its owner, Dering Stainbank, in what is now known as the Kenneth Stainbank Nature Reserve (Yellowwood Park, Durban South). Bird life is prolific and Zebra sometimes graze contentedly on the lawn. The house is filled with its original contents including a grandfather clock, Punch journals in the library, beautiful crockery and paintings. Tours, followed by tea and scones, can be arranged by appointment for groups of 10 or more. The grounds are also available for hire for garden weddings and birthday parties. Contact Jenny Keith, 031 – 469 8811, coedmorecastle@gmail.com, birtwhistle@mweb.co.za. • Mary Stainbank Art Gallery: Daughter of Dering Stainbank who built Coedmore Castle, Mary Stainbank was an accomplished sculptress who crafted a variety of pieces in a style well beyond her time. An original barn, which formed part of the dairy at Coedmore Castle, is being restored and will soon house her works. The memorial gallery will be open to the public later this year. Contact Cherryl Curry, 031 - 462 8642, cherrylc@mweb.co.za. • Babes in the Wood: Started recently by Kathryn Brett of the Wilderness Leadership School, this “nature appreciation” for toddlers takes place in the Kenneth Stainbank Nature Reserve adjacent to Coedmore Castle. The two-hour classes on Thursdays from 9am – 11am comprise unstructured time for children age one to five years to connect with nature. Connecting with nature, believes Kathryn, could help prevent anti-social behaviour in people, and help protect biodiversity in nature. Parents must attend. Educated Life The Gabriel Literacy System David Jesse began to write and illustrate readers for South African schools in 2003. Content included old-school values of good morals, good manners and the importance of family. These well-written, beautifully illustrated children’s stories not only teach a child to read, but also teach marine and wildlife conservation, and an exciting array of life skills.

Party Life Clamber Club Parties Clamber Club is a magical place where frogs sleep on lily pads and wear running shoes. Where children tumble, roll, climb, jump and jog. Clamber Club promotes fitness, health and learning and its parties are all about “move, learn and grow” and lots of fun! Entertainment in the form of an obstacle course provides versatile, energy filled, action-packed fun at parties/events. Parties are aimed at toddlers, three to six year olds and seven to nine year olds. Entertainment can also be provided at school outings (two hours of obstacle course fun) or tailor-made for children at corporate functions. Toddler equipment drop-off for little ones includes delivery and set up at your venue. Equipment comprises a mini obstacle course, toddler trampoline and tunnel, inflatable animal bouncers and more. Classic clamber and climb entertainment for pre-schoolers includes two entertainers who provide children with 1 1/2 hours of obstacle course fun, playing tons of exciting age-appropriate games. Super Action parties for older kids see Clamber Club coming to your venue with a truckload of colourful Clamber Club obstacle course equipment. Two entertainers will arrange team-based, age-appropriate games for the children for 1 1/2 hours. The obstacle course and games for this age group are challenging and create a sense of team spirit. Popular games include chair basketball, soccer, cricket and combats. The 20-handle gym parachute is a favourite with all ages, so parties are ended with this fantastic activity!

Relaxed Life The KZN Winter Air Tour is Back with Seven Great Air Shows
100 years after Woodstock can music still stop a war?
The upcoming cold winter months do not have to mean staying indoors and keeping warm. After the success of last year’s airshows across KZN, the Winter Air Tour is back this June and July, and it looks set to put on a bigger show than ever before. Like last year, the KZN Winter Air Tour is bringing back an airshow to each of the airports in Newcastle, Ulundi, Richards Bay, Pietermaritzburg, Margate and Durban. But this year there is a new addition to the already exciting line-up: Mkuze will have the chance to show off its impressive facilities by hosting its very first aviation event this year. The KZN Winter Air Tour is a highlight on the East Coast calendar, with the airshows at Durban, Newcastle and Ulundi drawing thousands of attendees each year. This winter’s shows are sure to leave aviation fanatics as well as excited spectators in awe of the latest in aviation technology, while also enjoying a full exhibition show which includes food and entertainment, at the various events. The Winter Air Tour also offers plenty of opportunity for the young ones to engage in fun activities and learn about aviation and what it takes to become part of the industry. Newcastle will mark the start of this year’s Winter Air Tour on 1 June, Mkuze on 8 June, Ulundi on 15 June, Richards Bay 22 June 22 and Pietermaritzburg 29 June. During July, Margate will host its airshow on 6 July and Durban will close this year’s air tour on 13 July. Relaxed Life Finding a Home for Your Treasure Finding a home for your treasure is what Sandy and Buddy Day of Durban North do. Dealers in antiques, Sandy and Buddy collect, restore and have valued, the treasures that people have tucked away in their homes. Some of the antiques are then sold through the monthly Antiques Fair she and Buddy convene. The one held at La Lucia Mall in June was a celebration of the fair’s 10th anniversary. Themed “A Walk Down Memory Lane” tables displaying beautiful jewellery, cutlery, crockery, vintage books, cameos, vintage dolls, militaria and much more, caught the eye of many a shopper. A “walk down memory lane” it certainly proved to be as I saw my husband chatting happily to Buddy about the antique tools his “dad used”, and my mother-in-law declaring proudly that she’d had a “tea set just like that”. But restoring treasures for others is not all the Days do. Their home in Durban North is a showpiece of the most exquisite treasures that Buddy and Sandy have no intention of parting with: a full-size suit of armour (amusingly presented to Sandy in several rusted pieces before Buddy restored it), breathtakingly beautiful wooden furniture made by Buddy – several pieces of which have the family’s faces carved into them, dozens of wooden toy soldiers, paintings (done by Sandy when recovering from a heart attack), antique jewellery and stylish vintage dresses to die for. Surrounded by 14th Century chairs in the dining room and eating off a dainty Royal Albert plate on my visit to the Days, my own “walk down memory lane” was a wonderfully pleasant journey!
