Editor’s Life If you’ve not yet been to have a look at our revamped website, please visit www.mumsmail.com and let us know what you think. The best feedback (good or bad) will win a lovely hamper from Mum’s Mail. In my 9 years at the helm of Mum’s Mail, I have been let down by so many website and software developers, that I have almost lost count. So much money down the drain, wasted on systems that aren’t effective, don’t do what the developer promises it will do and simply don’t meet my requirements. So when I embarked on my latest quest to find the best company to re-build the entire Mum’s Mail website, I was naturally hesitant when I was referred to Crystal Media. What would make THIS web developer true to their word? After meeting with Sacha and Julian (the fabulous core of the business), I felt more confident that they knew what they were doing and what I wanted, and yet the payment of my 50% deposit was done with much reservation – I had previously had a very well known Durbanbased website company run off with my rather substantial deposit, which took me four years of legal wrangling to recover. Dealing with Crystal Media has been an absolute pleasure. When Sacha said “You’ll have that on Monday”, I got what she promised on Monday. And although we went live slightly later than planned, it wasn’t because they were running late, it was because they weren’t happy that things were working 100% and they wanted to ensure that all was as perfect as possible. What other business is THAT concerned about YOUR business? I have the utmost respect for Crystal Media and advise anyone looking to revamp their website or looking for a brand new website to give them a call. Tell them I referred you too, so they know they’ll have to be on their toes! Contact them on 031 – 266 0000 or sacha@crystalmedia.co.za.

Laidback Life Books & Books Reviews • Stay Where You Are & Then Leave by John Boyne (for ages 10 - 12 years). The day the First World War broke out, Alfie Summerfield’s father promised him he wouldn’t go away to fight but he broke that promise the next day. Four years later, Alfie doesn’t know where his father is stationed. One day, while shining shoes at King’s Cross Station Alfie sees his father’s name on a sheaf of papers belonging to a doctor. Beautifully written and a delight for fans of “The Boy in Striped Pajamas”. • Heroes of Olympus: House of Hades by Rick Riordon (for ages 10 - 12 years). At the conclusion of “The Mark of Athena”, Annabeth and Percy tumble into a pit leading straight to the Underworld. The other five demigods have to put aside their grief and follow Percy’s instructions to find the mortal side of the Doors of Death. • Newspaper Boy & Origami Girl by Michael Foreman (picture book). When a group of bullies steal a poor newspaper boy’s money, his bag suddenly flies into the air and the newspapers transform into Origami Girl. Joey is whisked away on a hair-raising chase with his new superhero friend in order to confront the bullies. An exciting adventure unfolds in Michael Foreman’s latest beautifully illustrated picture book, featuring a new super heroine. • The Fall of Five by Pittacus Lore (teen fiction/adult crossover). The fourth book in the “Lorien” series is sure to blow your mind! More action, more drama and more twists than a bag of pretzels! John Smith thought that things would change once the Garde found each other but after facing off with the Mogadorian ruler and almost being annihilated, they know they’re drastically unprepared and hopelessly outgunned. • King & Maxwell by David Baldacci (adult fiction). Sean King and Michelle Maxwell, former Secret Service agents turned private investigators, featured in the hit M-Net TV series “King & Maxwell”, take on their most surprising and dangerous case yet. Teenager, Tyler Wingo receives a communication from his soldier father… after his supposed death in Afghanistan. He hires King and Maxwell to solve this mystery. Liv 52 Liv 52 Syrup If you have kids, appetite loss is a constant worry. Children sometimes don’t want to eat no matter what, and there are those who only wish to eat their favourite foods. And it’s a problem when children don’t eat nutritious food. A lack of appetite results in weight loss and lack of energy which is alarming for parents. This behaviour could lead to eating disorders or may be an indication of underlying illness. Too much pressure, stress or distractions are other reasons for appetite loss in children. Ensure you are not putting too much pressure on them to eat and do not force feed them as this can lead to severe eating disorders such as anorexia or bulimia. The best thing you can do is to start feeding your child healthy foods at an early age. That way, they will get used to eating and enjoying healthy alternatives and won’t crave junk foods as they get older. A quick solution to appetite loss is Himalaya Health Care’s Liv 52 Syrup that corrects the lack of appetite in the right manner. Liv 52 Syrup improves appetite, digestion and assimilation in children with poor appetite. In the majority of cases lack of appetite or anorexia is due to loss of basic rhythm of appetite and satiety. Liv 52 acts to correct this basic defect rather than stimulating or supressing the appetite centre. Liv 52 contains no alcohol or sedatives. Directions for use: • 3 to 5 years: 5ml three times daily before meals. • 5 to 12yrs: 7,5ml to 10ml three times daily before meals. Available at all independent pharmacies and health shops. The brand has grown from strength to strength over the years now boasting seven different models: Hatch, Convertible, Clubman, Four-door Countryman, Two-seater Coupe and Roadster and now the Two-door Paceman! MINI is part of the BMW group and their vehicles have fantastic build quality and safety ratings, with new vehicles carrying a three-year and/or 75 000km motor plan with roadside assistance. The brand-new stand-alone dealership in Umhlanga, SMG Rocks, is the biggest in the country. Kirsten Hickey began her career in the motor industry with BMW in 2008 and joined the MINI brand in 2010. She prides herself on delivering awesome service, especially on the after-sales side and won the award (countrywide) for Highest Customer Satisfaction 2012. Kirsten is known as the product knowledge guru and is extremely passionate about the brand. She believes in building long-term relationships with her clients as referrals are the best source of business… Some happy customer comments: • “I just wanted to belatedly say a very large thank you for your assistance with my damaged number plate a few weeks ago. As always your speed of response, support, and generally great service were much appreciated (particularly given that it is “after-sales” service).” Catherine Read-Fletcher. • “Just a quick note to thank you for the excellent service you always provide me. You are an amazing sales person and MINI are so lucky to have you! You always go beyond what you need to and that is rare and needs to be acknowledged.” Cristina Viegas. Photographs bring back memories of happy, special times. Sadly, nowadays our photographs generally sit on our computer hard drives and we hardly ever relive the special memories. Alice Leah (Editor of Mum’s Mail) tried out Hope Meats and said: “Wow, wow, wow! Am super impressed with Hope Meats. The thin cheese wors was so delish we were literally fighting for the last morsel. The boerie was also delicious and not at all fatty like normal wors. The rump was tender and tasty and the lamb loin chops plump and juicy. The dry wors I’m told was fantastic – my hubby didn’t share that! Had no idea hormone free and free range would make such a difference to the taste, let alone the health aspect! We will definitely be back for more.”

Home Life Harvey’s Umhlanga The entrance to the village of Umhlanga is looking really smart these days with new businesses, revamps and architecturally appealing buildings nearing completion. Add to this the “new” Harvey’s at Umhlanga Centre, just past the M4 offramp, and the “look” is even better. Harvey’s is smart, without being intimidating. The interior is spacious without being empty. Plush black walls, mirrors, bookshelves, an exquisite chandelier, a glass-fronted wine cellar, bathrooms with a “hat hook” and “handbag hook”, and sparklingly bright cocktail area create a sophisticated, open and welcoming atmosphere. Perfect for lunch or dinner. I had lunch there recently with two colleagues. The menu is extensive – both the Day & Late Night Bar Menu and the main menu. Isabelle had a tiny Poached Oyster with Hollandaise Sauce presented on a single spoon as a starter. She followed this with a “delicious” Prawn and Angel Hair Pasta. Lee and I shared the Tempura Courgettes as a starter (crispy, tangy and not too doughy) and then Lee ordered the Mush-Vroom Pizza with added Parma Ham. Not quite warm enough, the pizza base was nevertheless pleasantly crisp and thin. Harvey’s pizza combinations are particularly intriguing: how about a Brie & Red Onion Marmalade pizza, a Potato Pizza, Greek Lamb or even a South African Pizza (the latter complete with biltong and Mrs Ball’s!)?! I had the Norwegian Salmon which was tangy and particularly flavourful.

Home Life Futuristic Smartphone is Here I recently attended the launch of Sony’s Xperia Z Ultra – “the world’s slimmest and largest full HD smartphone display”. Seemingly the only “non-techie” in the room I got to ask “smartphone for dummies” type questions and was amazed at what I learnt. This new phone is large – bigger than a 180g slab of chocolate but thinner at only 6,5mm and weighing only marginally more at 212g. It’s a cross between a phone and a tablet and is designed to replace the need for carrying two devices. Like the Sony Xperia V, this new model is also designed to be waterproof, dustresistant and “durable” (i.e. drop it, yes, but don’t be too rough with it!). It has a stunning visual display – ideal for watching movies, playing games, reading books (bigger than the small Kindle), browsing the web and taking photos. It reportedly has longlasting battery life, important if you’re travelling with your new toy. If you want to work or write while you travel (or anywhere) – no problem. Simply take out your pen, keys or pencil and start scribing. Because it’s a Sony phone it “speaks” to various NFC-enabled Sony devices with ease. For example, the man demonstrating the phone simply tapped a speaker twice and was thus able to play his music through the speakers. What really reminded me of the Star Trek movies (apart from it being an Android) were the SBH52 (a dynamic Smart Bluetooth™ Handset) and the SmartWatch 2 SW2 – devices with which you can operate your smartphone remotely while the latter lies casually in your handbag!

Home Life Movember It’s that time of the year again when South Africa’s Mo Bros, supported by the women in their lives, Mo Sistas, embark on a hairy journey to “Change the Face of Men’s Health” and help raise awareness and funds for men’s health issues, specifically prostate and testicular cancer and male mental health. In South Africa, Movember has partnered with the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) and funds raised from each campaign will be allocated towards men’s health survivorship and research programmes. From teachers to CEOs, policemen, doctors, students and musicians – these dedicated men become walking, talking billboards for the 30 days of Movember. Movember sheds light on hard-hitting numbers. According to statistics from CANSA, South African men have a shorter life expectancy than South African women. The rate of cancer diagnoses is also considerably higher among men – 1 in 6 compared to 1 in 8 for women. In addition, more than 4000 cases of prostate cancer are diagnosed annually, and it’s estimated that over 2500 men will die of the disease each year, amounting to a man dying every 4.5 hours. Once registered, the rules are simple. Start clean shaven on 1 November. For the entire month of Movember each Mo Bro must grow and groom a moustache. There is to be no joining of the Mo to your side burns. That’s considered a beard. There is to be no joining of the handlebars to your chin. That’s considered a goatee.

Home Life Making a Bucket List American author, Philip Yancey, asked a terminally ill patient: “What’s it like knowing you are going to die?” She replied: “What’s it like pretending you are not going to die?” As this exchange implies, many of us wait for some crisis before we evaluate our lives and make positive changes. But we don’t have to. We can make changes NOW. We can make, and enact, our “Bucket” (or “Life”) lists now and start living intentionally.

This was the message at a motivational Bucket List Breakfast held recently in Kloof and conducted by Mike Ivey and Cindy Rug Doctor Pro Norcott. We often live with a disconnect Professional cleaning - home or office between now and the future, in the naïve notion that there will be more time in the • Fitted & loose carpets future. “Routine” is what keeps us in this • Lounge suites • Mattresses mode and it becomes an excuse for not • Curtains • Flood damage doing the things we always wanted to do. The speakers urged the audience to see the world as a “diverse” place which therefore offers so much opportunity for discovery and experience. They also suggested we stop “sleepwalking” and become intentional about our lives. This included making a Bucket/Life list that could include items under the topics: Simply Because I Can; Break Routine; Pay it Forward. “Fifteen Minutes or Less” and “The Big Things” were both topics that indicated our Lists can range from the small to the big.

Tickets will be on sale at the entrance for R40 per person, which includes a delicious tea. All funds raised by the Country Fair are donated to various deserving charities on the North Coast. With a choice of more than 80 stalls featuring a selection of products including local and handmade, visitors are in for a treat. There is also a selection of new and exciting stalls coming to the Country Fair for the first time. So just what is available for the little ones? There will be a nominal fee for this area.

Healthy Life What is Nia? Nia is the most advanced form of fusion fitness. It is made up of nine different movement forms that are blended. These include the dance arts, healing arts and martial arts. Nia builds strength, flexibility and grace and brings about transformation on many levels. It uses the pleasure principle to seek comfort and ease in order to move, strengthen and heal the body in a natural and organic way. It is a fun yet efficient workout that provides cardiovascular conditioning while allowing the body to experience the feel-good sensations of dance. “The Joy of Movement is the secret of fitness. Stop exercising. Start moving. Follow the pleasure principle: If it feels good do it; if it doesn’t, stop.” (Debbie Rosas and Carlos Rosas – founders of the Nia Technique). Alice Leah, Editor of Mum’s Mail, said: “I was roped into doing a session of Nia at The Look and Feel Good expo. Now this would not have been an issue had I been dressed normally, but I was dressed as a pirate (we were running the kids’ area at the show). I expected a little swaying in the breeze, but wowee Nia is no easy workout. Two minutes into the dancing and I was sweating profusely. My pirate hat was dangling dangerously on the edge of my head, my badges had fallen off, my pen was broken and my skirt was no longer where it should have been (thank goodness for leggings)! But what fun I had! The music is very trancelike and I can see how the ladies can get hooked on this form of exercise. And unlike my Get Fit sessions, no Spot the pirate! puke bucket!” Contact: Fiona, 083 258 5880, www.niakzn.co.za. www.mumsmail.com

Healthy Life Walk the Talk at the Diabetes Global Walk! Accept the Healthy Lifestyle challenge – not only for yourself, but for your family and friends and join in the Durban leg of the Diabetes S.A. 5km Global Walk proudly supported by ProNutro and taking place on Sunday 17 November starting at 8am from the Lower Marine Parade Amphitheatre. Approaching the third successful year of this event, the organisers and supporters of Diabetes S.A. are all set to go and aim to encourage over 3000 walkers to enter. In addition to the walk, there will be a festive Wellness Expo which allows members of the public to receive free glucose and blood pressure tests amongst other exciting features. Local personalities will be on hand entertaining the crowds and offering loads of lucky draws and family getaways. In order to give you enough time to register, you can go to uShaka Marine World on 9 and 10 November from 10am to 2pm. Diabetes S.A. personnel will be on duty to help with the registration process. “South Africa needs an event like this. Not many people are aware that Diabetes is a serious medical condition where there is too much glucose in the bloodstream; hence Diabetes has been dubbed the ‘silent killer’ for years and we seriously need to do something about it collectively!” says Jenny Russell, the Branch Manager at Diabetes S.A. in Durban. Don’t risk it, improve your lifestyle and take control! The first 1500 walkers over the finish line will receive a goodie bag and with the entry fee at just R50 per person, proceeds will be going to this deserving cause. Healthy Life Parkrun Parkrun is an international movement that organises FREE 5km runs in open areas for the public. It is sponsored by Blue Label Telecoms, Adidas and Discovery Vitality. I decided to join up and see what Parkrun was all about. First, I visited the website (www.parkrun.co.za) and registered, adding my Discovery Medical Aid details. I was sent an e-mail containing a page of six barcodes (all the same), which I printed out, laminated and cut into individual cards.

My closest Parkrun site is North Beach and the run takes place every Saturday at 8am. Parking in Suncoast Casino parking lot proved best as the free parking bays along the beachfront were full at that time. Armed with my barcode and hat, I set off with all the other runners when the timekeeper announced 8am. I’m not a runner so was glad to see lots of families walking, pushing prams etc. The walk/run leaves from just in front of the casino and tracks along the promenade in a southerly direction. At the 2,5km mark a small cone and an enthusiastic and encouraging volunteer indicated the point at which we all had to turn and go back to the start/finish point. Once I reached the finish I was herded into a small area in which other volunteers (manned by Lungile Health volunteers) handed me a plastic tag which was then scanned together with my barcode and loaded onto the website. Later that day I received an e-mail stating my time. The facilities along North Beach are absolutely stunning, so exercising along this stretch right next to the Indian Ocean was a pleasure. And I earned 500 Discovery points!

Rehana Paruk

Get real this Christmas with healthy gifts for friends and family and know that your money has been well spent. Encourage a healthy lifestyle in those you love with the gifts you give and give them so much more than just a once-off gift. “Dress up” a bottle of Aloe Vera with a miniature cactus plant; give a tin of a Healthy Drink together with two colourful tumblers and a card that says: “Drink to a happy and healthy year ahead!”; give a pack of Carotenoid Complex with a sweat towel and pedometer. Even a homecare product is a great idea – pair a bottle of All Purpose Cleaner with a spray bottle and some hand lotion.

But how to go about shopping for the gifts? Let’s face it, finding the time to search the shops, choosing just the right gift for the right person, and trying to ensure that what you’re buying is good quality can be difficult. Wouldn’t it be marvellous if someone could just bring a selection of top quality goods to you and you could select what would be suitable? Well, that’s precisely what direct selling does! In the comfort of your own home you can look at a selection of products and find just the gift you’re looking for, because high quality products make the most perfect Christmas gifts. So get real this Christmas – buy healthy, useful gifts, and bring the gifts to you instead of schlepping to the shops!

Healthy Life Arthritis, Spondylosis, Neck and Arm Pain

JULIE A. CARDONA & ASSOCIATES AUDIOLOGIST & SPEECH LANGUAGE THERAPIST

Arthritis comes in various forms, the most serious being rheumatoid arthritis. The word “arthritis” sounds like a death sentence but actually means joint inflammation. It is not a disease that needs to be treated with chemotherapy. Misaligned vertebrae in the neck interfere with nerves that are supposed to dilate arteries that deliver raw materials to the bursa. Bursae are membranes found in all joints including the shoulders, arms and hands. These bursae make synovial fluid which is a lubricant. When the neck becomes misaligned it results in the joints drying up. Friction, heat inflammation and pain follow, usually in that order. Dr Powell’s work results in the nerves being freed, allowing the arteries to dilate and once more deliver the blood with the necessary raw materials. Every patient Dr Powell has seen in the last 40 years has two things in common: loss of lordosis in the neck and a misaligned C/5-C/6 area of the lower neck. All responded to accurate adjusting of the offending vertebrae. Fybromyalgia and rheumatism respond similarly. In fact all health problems begin to resolve when the neck is properly adjusted. Everyone should have their necks checked as this is the key to improved health physically, mentally and socially. Healthy Life Be Sun Smart There is an increase in the incidence of skin cancers worldwide. This is due to genetic factors as well as to excessive exposure to ultraviolet radiation. The ultraviolet rays that are most detrimental to the skin are UVB and UVA rays. After long-term sun exposure, there is a greater incidence of skin cancers – Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC), Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC) and Malignant Melanoma. It is important to be aware of the hazards of excessive sun exposure and modify your lifestyle and behavioural patterns accordingly.

Beautiful Life Changing your Tune, Changing your Life The annual Weigh-Less Man and Woman of the Year (MOTY WOTY) celebration took place recently at the Blue Waters Hotel. This year’s WOTY was presented to Legé Bokwandini, alongside Themba Ncongwane as the MOTY. At the awards ceremony, hosted by MC Dave Guselli, the audience was treated to stories, pictures and videos of the finalists from before their dramatic transformations. Chosen from the eight finalists, who were themselves selected from hundreds of entries from around the country, the life-changing transformations of Legé and Themba (both from Johannesburg) were recognised at the glittering event, which has been held annually since 1978. The judging process was overseen by a panel that included Mary Holroyd (Founder and Chairman of Weigh-Less). With each of the remarkable finalists having inspiring stories and significant weight losses, the judges had a most unenviable task of selecting the two winners. In winning Weigh-Less Woman of the Year 2013, Legé said: “I feel like a princess. WeighLess has proven that anything is possible. It has changed my life in every way. If I can do it, anybody can!” Man of the Year 2013, Themba Ncongwane said: “It is an honour and I am humbled, it still has not sunk in. African Diets are not dissimilar to the WeighLess Eating Plan, it is just a different way of preparing the food and exercising portion control.”

Beautiful Life Switch to Dove for 10 Days of Nourishment It’s no secret that Dove has made their mission the celebration of real beauty, from massive international campaigns to their products. To promote this mission even further, Dove’s Nourishing Body range delivers nourishment to each layer of the skin, working from the surface layer deep down, giving your skin 10 days of nourishment. The breakthrough Deep Care Complex in the Body Lotions range feeds every layer with a unique combination of natural skin nutrients and essential oils to gradually improve skin starting from deep down. The result? Long-lasting nourishment resulting in beautiful skin. Mum’s Mail staff tried out the Nourishing Body range this winter. Daniella said: “Whenever winter sets in my skin always gets that little bit dryer than normal. I used the Dove Indulgent Nourishment Body Lotion with shea butter for 10 days. It had a lovely fragrance, spread easily and was fast absorbing with no sticky residue. My skin has felt softer and hydrated. Bev used the Intensive Nourishment for Extra Dry Skin and said: “I found Dove Body Lotion moisturised my skin beautifully and didn’t leave a sticky or oily residue. It has a pleasant, yet subtle fragrance and is a winner for dry winter skin.” Alice used Essential Nourishment and said: “Although it had a lovely fragrance, it was too thick for my liking and did not spread well – I prefer a runnier lotion. My hubby however loved it and thought it was just perfect.” Switch to Dove for 10 days of nourished skin and experience real beauty for yourself. Beautiful Life Semi-Permanent Lash Extensions Have you always wanted longer, thicker, fuller lashes without the fake look that heavy mascara and false strip lashes can give you? Then try Eyelash Extensions. They are lightweight and give your eyes a natural, beautiful, instant facelift! Made from the highest quality fibres of sable, mink, silk and microfibre, these semipermanent lash extensions feel and look as natural as your own lashes. During a 1 1/2 hour salon appointment, the extensions are applied with a substance called pro-bond (a glue that is harmless to your eyes and lashes) to your existing lashes. Choose from over five different lengths depending on the look you want – from natural to glam. Lashes done at Angel Eyes last from six to eight weeks and fills can be done every four weeks. You can swim, shower and gym as normal. The extensions can be removed professionally with a gel de-bonder or at home as instructed by a professional. Taryn of Angel Eyes (situated on the Bluff) is a professional make-up artist and eyelash extension specialist. She has been in the industry for eight years. Beautiful Life High Protein Fitness Facial I recently had the pleasure of attending Mama Mio’s High Protein Fitness Facial launch at The Spa at the Oyster Box in Umhlanga, and was intrigued by what they had to offer. Mama Mio is a range created by women for women. With that, comes a fun approach to serious skincare. The High Protein face care range includes the following products: Clean Slate, Mighty Moisture, Eye Know, Nexercise and Love Your Life Lines. Seen as leaders in pregnancy skincare products Mama Mio has a particularly strong “no-nasties” policy – no parabens, petrochemicals, synthetic fragrance, colourants or xenoestrogens. Mama Mio’s “fit skin for life” philosophy offers you an inside/outside approach to skincare. An example of this is the Nexercise firming neck and jawline concentrate which comes complete with instructions for tongue-twisting, jaw-stretching exercises designed to prevent loose jowls etc. Then there are the in-house spa treatments. The Spa at the Oyster Box is such a pleasure to visit that it is easy to relax and enjoy what Mama Mio has to offer. I had their High Protein Face Fitness Facial recently (Gorgeous Glow Pregnancy Facial being reserved for Mamas-To-Be). After cleansing and exfoliating my face, the therapist applied the HA Vitamin C Serum, and then massaged my face in tiny, totally unique movements, stimulating my facial muscles. Dead, dry skin peeled off naturally during the treatment and my skin felt smooth afterwards and looked even – a biggie for me as I’m conscious of my pigmentation. Make a Mama Mio Facial appointment at The Spa at the Oyster Box today and feel the difference! Beautiful Life Q & A: Face and Body Aesthetics Q: What are neurotoxin injections and how do they work on wrinkles? A: Botox®, Dysport® and Azzalure® are many brands of neurotoxins available in aesthetic medicine. Derived from onabotulinum toxin, these drugs have been altered and are completely safe for human use. They have been in use since the 1980s. Their main role in aesthetics is in wrinkle reduction. Wrinkles are either static or dynamic and the drugs work well on dynamic wrinkles. These wrinkles/ creases appear when a face is showing expression e.g. surprise, frowning etc. Wrinkles that present when a face is at rest are called static wrinkles. Through a series of minute injections, placed into facial muscles, these agents act as an inhibitor preventing the muscles from moving. These inactivated muscles will thus remain in a state of calm, preventing the wrinkles associated with their movement from appearing. Particularly common areas treated are the glabella (vertical frown lines between the eyebrows), the “crow’s feet” area (around the eyes), the forehead and nasal scrunch (wrinkling over the nose). By inhibiting specific muscle movements, we can also cause other muscles to dominate which results in enhancement of features, such as in an eyebrow lift. The results of facial neurotoxin injections typically last three to four months. There are no long-term side effects from its use and when skilfully administered, will not result in a frozen expressionless face but instead will create a refreshed, peaceful and youthful look. Helpful guidelines: • Shower daily. • Oral hygiene – carry mints with you at all times for fresh breath. Floss regularly. • Facial skincare – discover a simple beauty routine that you enjoy and is affordable. Remember to wear sunscreen especially during summer and windy seasons. • Hair maintenance – especially when playing sport and being active hair tends to become oily much quicker. Select a good haircare brand that is suitable for your hair type (ask a hair stylist for advice). Trim the ends of your hair every six weeks. Remember to protect your hair during summer by wearing a cap or a hair masque. • Hair removal – different options for hair removal include shaving, waxing and laser. Waxing encourages softer regrowth in comparison to shaving. For eyebrows, waxing and threading by qualified therapists is best. • Nail care – ensure your nails are always an appropriate length, neatly filed and clean. Apply hand cream to keep your pretty hands looking and feeling fabulous!

Only four other countries in the world have this register – USA, Canada, U.K. and Australia. Part of the amendments to the act now have legislation in place for industries/ companies who come into contact with children to have their employees checked against this Sexual Offenders Register. The Registrar will begin with inspections in the Education, Hospitality and Health industries. Non-compliance can result in a fine or imprisonment of up to seven years, or both. To comply, employers need to send their staff to a police station for fingerprinting and affidavits, and then go onto the Department of Justice website, download and complete the relevant forms. Once all this information has been submitted, Certificates of Compliance can be issued after a wait of up to six months. The Guardian is a company that offers the service of assisting employers and their employees to obtain Compliance Certificates. This involves: coming to your company premises, scanning fingerprints on site, giving affidavits, submitting the information to the Registrar and then following through with communication until the Certificates of Compliance are received. Run by former Specialist Crimes against Children Advisor, Marc Hardwick, The Guardian offers services which include: private investigation, undercover guardian (child protection), and education regarding stranger danger, cyberbullying, trafficking, drugs and much more. Young Life Young Star Belongs on the Stage From a very young age 10 year old Ethan Dunk of Westville wanted to be on the stage. “I’m going to be famous,” Ethan would tell his mum, local businesswoman Emma Dunk. And it seems that Ethan is already well on his way to stardom. The young singer/dancer/musician recently made a guest performance at the Rhumbelow Theatre’s “The Ultimate Variety Show”.

Angela’sHome Based in Amaoti, Angela’s Home provides a safe and nurturing environment to orphans as well as abandoned, abused, disabled and HIV/AIDS affected/infected children. In addition, the home is used as a place of safety for vulnerable children by the Juvenile Courts. Registered as iZimbali Zesizwe Child and Youth Centre, Angela’s Home also feeds nearly fifty local youths who use it as an afternoon homework facility. The home also offers regular spiritual discipleship to the children. iZimbali Zesizwe ensures that all who enter will leave knowing what it is to be loved.

Needs: • Paper, stationery (old and new) and craft materials • Toiletries • Bibles and Christian Story books (especially for young adults and children) • Girls and boy’s toys (dinky cars, balls, dolls etc) • Wrapping paper and Christmas decorations • Clothes • 2nd hand smart phone (for free and detailed communication between the centre and its partners)

“At family gatherings Ethan would always round up the kids and put on a play for the family,” remembered Emma. “And in pre-primary and primary school he took the lead role twice in the annual school play/musical.” Apart from the plays, Ethan has also taken part in the annual Speech & Drama Festival since he was in Grade 1, coming out with top marks each time. He is a member of the school choir, does Ballroom & Latin American Dancing lessons (with exams for this year fast approaching), guitar lessons, and drama lessons with Rising Star Academy. For the latter Ethan is hard at work preparing for his LAMDA exams.

Please contact Sally du Plessis on 031 - 561 2098 or 082 856 9801 to arrange collection.

Very excitingly, this year, Ethan’s choir teacher suggested that this young pupil audition for the Drakensberg Boys’ Choir. Not long after the audition Ethan received news that he had been offered a place should he wish to go. What a feather in his cap! But for now, Ethan is busy with school and private lessons and shows, and the occasional guest performance at the Essenwood Flea Market. Be sure to catch this young man in action, on the stage, where he seems to belong. www.mumsmail.com

Tiny Life Early Beginnings Prematurity Awareness Month Every parent’s hope is that their child will be born to term and be completely healthy; however, this doesn’t always occur. Having a premature baby can be an extremely traumatic and stressful period for parents. Leading nappy brand Pampers®, understands all too well that coping and caring for a preterm baby’s unique physical, emotional, and educational needs, can be challenging. Pampers® is proud to introduce size 0 nappies, new to the Pampers Premium Care range. It was specially designed for babies born too soon or too small. Moms of premature babies can now rest easy and be assured of 5 star skin protection, from the moment her delicate baby enters the world, even if earlier than first planned. Early arrivals on the rise: Every year, an estimated 15 million babies are born preterm (before 37 completed weeks of gestation), and this number is rising. Last year (2012) in South Africa alone, there were 84 000 recorded preterm births. Another way that preterm births are sometimes classified is in relation to birth weight (under 2kg), and not the number of pregnancy weeks completed. Using the broader classification, this number could be even higher. Pampers® Premium Care product range can be found on-shelf in leading supermarkets and pharmacies, nationwide. Tiny Life Rules for Play Dates Put more than one toddler in a room with toys and it’s a recipe for disaster. We want our toddlers to play together, but often it causes more friction between you and your friend than is worth it. So how do you do it and still remain friends? • Limit the play date thing to once or twice a week. It’s hard work, for you and for the toddler who is expected to share and play nicely. • How to tell if it’s too much? If he happily looks forward to going to play he is up to it. If he moans and complains that little Johnny doesn’t share he might not be in the mood for playing. • They can’t cope with long play date sessions; 1 to 1½ hours max is all the two year old can muster. • Avoid play dates during his nap time or when he is hungry. This will just make him cranky and less likely to behave. • Don’t make a party of it. Two toddlers are hard enough to cope with; three is just looking for trouble. • Be sensitive to him sharing HIS toys. You don’t share all your favourite things. Let him decide beforehand what he is not allowed to play with and put it away safely. • Start with a snack. Just make sure everyone has the same number of cheese sticks on their plates. • Keep an eye out all the time. This will help prevent accidents and keep the peace. • Don’t be afraid to discipline both children and don’t take the guest’s side just because they are guests. Tiny Life Feeding Fussy Eaters Dietician, Kerryn Gibson, recently gave a helpful nutrition talk to a group of young mums in Durban North. Kerryn began by describing what mothers should look out for when differentiating between a genuine eating disorder and transient fussiness. If your child: loses weight, has weight fluctuations, doesn’t meet their height milestones, has lots of colds, is stressed at mealtimes, will only eat one type of colour/texture, then they may have a more serious problem.

Kerryn then gave some mealtime advice:

WE UNDERSTAND YOUR CONCERN!

• Manage meal times. Decide on times to eat, set a limit on the mealtime length and dedicate those times to eating. If allowed to “graze” children will learn that they don’t have to eat when they are told to. • Look in your cupboards/fridge to see what foods are available to your children. Are there carbohydrates, fruits, vegetables, protein and dairy? • Look at your mealtimes as if you were an outsider. Are your mealtimes relaxed and positive? Is everyone else in the family eating? Is your toddler’s food similar to everyone else’s in the family? • Watch your own eating habits and model the correct ones for your children. • Get to know your child’s hunger cues. A good tip: give positive, not negative attention, i.e. notice and praise them when they eat properly. • Give Pediasure, a food supplement, if you feel your child is not getting enough vital nutrients in their diet. Use at the end of the day so that your child wakes up naturally hungry.

Montessori Life Montessori Teaching Montessori @ Umhlanga is a well-established pre-school that has been in the Umhlanga area for nine years and is run in accordance with the internationally renowned Montessori philosophy and teaching principles. Research has shown that the first six years of a child’s life are the most critical in terms of psycho-social learning and development. Montessori equips children with the key skills for success in a rapidly evolving world. The curriculum is rooted in the child’s innate desire to learn, grow and acquire new skills. Montessori @ Umhlanga offers a sensible, structured education that recognises the unique attributes of each child and allows them to learn at their own pace, rather than subjecting them to batteries of stressful and meaningless tests. It is a system that guides children in the direction of independence and self-reliance. Though instruction is largely on a one-on-one basis, children also work in collaborative groups to experience the value of teamwork and shared ideas. Montessori methodology is augmented by specially designed apparatus which provides the child with a concrete sense of abstract concepts. Specially designed learning tools have built-in mechanisms to enable children to self-correct and learn from their mistakes. Maths is regarded as a vital component of the Montessori curriculum and children are able to grasp complicated concepts far earlier than their peers in mainstream educational systems. There is also a strong emphasis on teaching children how to execute realworld activities such as fastening and unfastening clothes, folding, dusting, washing and tidying up. Playtime is NOT considered wasted time. Unstructured (but supervised) play means that a child directs their own playtime and entertains him/herself. Educated Life Arm Yourself for Parenting in Public

Labels By Aaysh Labels By Aaysh

What do you do if your child throws a tantrum in public (e.g. at the shops)? Some tips: • Prepare your children. Explain exactly what you expect from them, how you expect them to behave and the consequences if they don’t. • Always put your child’s needs first. Although it may be tempting to hush over a moment where your child oversteps the boundaries, you need to keep your child’s need for your guidance and discipline at the top of your priority list. Act swiftly and with conviction, despite what you think others may think of you. • Never embarrass your child socially. While you may want to scream and shout so others can see you mean business, do not do this. It is very important that you do not embarrass your child in a social setting. Take them aside and talk sternly to them about the situation, in a way that does not draw attention to them and in a way that they understand that you respect their feelings. • Be consistent. As with any form of behaviour direction, consistency is key. If you say you’re going to go straight home after Woolies, don’t be surprised when your children have a meltdown when you quickly decide to make a last-minute stop at Clicks too. Stick to your story. The same applies for discipline.

Great Tip (from age 2½ to 8 years): Carry a black marker in your bag. When your child misbehaves simply mark their hand with a circle. Educated Life Froggie Barefoot Science Designed in conjunction with a leading podiatrist, Froggie Barefoot Science is a revolutionary, back-to-basics design based on the simple principle that being barefoot is the healthiest way for your feet to be. Benefits of Froggie Barefoot Science: • Naturally flexes and strengthens the foot muscles. • Realigns your natural posture. • Allows all muscle groups in the foot to work as nature intended. • Naturally promotes equilibrium in the muscles in your feet and stimulates the nerve endings in your feet. • No cheap PVC components. • Protects your feet with an ultra-thin puncture-resistant sole (that acts like a second skin). • Renewable natural rubber in Froggie Barefoot Science promotes saving the forests that produce oxygen for the earth. While podiatrists and orthopaedic specialists have long known that a baby best learns to walk when barefoot, a growing body of recent evidence in scientific literature shows that the design of children’s shoes should be based on the barefoot model. The Froggie Barefoot Science School Shoe is the only shoe manufactured in S.A. medically and scientifically proven to emulate barefoot growth. Most of the future bone structure in a child’s foot begins as cartilage that is gradually replaced by bone. Cartilage in a child is easily deformed by sustained external pressure. That is why it is vital that a child’s shoe allows enough room for natural growth and direction until the foot bones mature (at age 18–19 for girls and 20–21 for boys). The lightweight, flexible design of Froggie Barefoot Science promotes natural simultaneous development of all muscle groups in the foot, leading to strong, healthy feet and ankles. Party Life Snacking Tips from Simba Simba, South Africa’s leading snack brand, has been a part of South African families for over 57 years, sharing in many happy memories of good times enjoyed by all with a packet of Simba chips. By providing truly South African snacks that embody local flavours and tastes, Simba has ensured they continue to be part of every family occasion, with a legacy deeply entrenched in the hearts and tastes of South Africans around the country.

HOLIDAY CAMP DATES 11, 12 & 13 December

Flavour tips: • Tangy and flavoursome: If you like a savoury flavour that’s not on the spicy side and has a nice (but not overpowering) tang with a touch of smoke, then Simba’s Mrs Ball’s Chutney, Salt & Vinegar, Tomato Sauce and the new limited edition Monkey Gland Sauce flavoured potato chips are for you. The flavours are a slightly sweet, tomato-vinegar blend you’ve come to love. • Hot and spicy: Spice it up a little with Simba Mexican Chilli flavoured potato chips that will tingle your taste buds and leave your mouth watering. This flavour has just the right amount of hot and spicy mixed with perfect potato chips. • Crisp and Cheesy: Simba’s dairy selection includes the Cheese & Onion and Creamy Cheddar potato chips. It’s optional for those consumers not big on spice but like that cheese-like bite. They are creamy, crisp and fully flavoured and safe for those family members who enjoy the classic taste. You’ll be spoilt for choice with the Simba range, available in the 36g, 125g and 200g packets. Only the quality, freshness and flavour of Simba potato chips deliver the great taste for families to enjoy.

The nature of the SWAT Laser Tag product is so safe and easy to play that no uncomfortable, restrictive protective gear is needed. Alice Leah, Editor of Mum’s Mail, said: “Planning my son’s birthday party has become somewhat predictable. For the last few years all he ever wants to do is paintball or laser tag. This year Ethan laid down the law – NO GIRLS! He was worried that they would get hurt. I must admit, I think I would also be a little nervous with all that testosterone in the trees. Despite atrocious weather conditions the kids had a blast at the arena behind the Pick n Pay Hyper in Durban North. I would highly recommend laser tag for girls and boys and paintball for the boys.” For an out-of-the-box event for that special occasion contact the experienced SWAT Laser Tag team; they run Mobile Units all across the Western Cape and KZN countryside.

Once you get used to the equipment you will find the laser tag guns deadly accurate and be amazed at the effective range of the laser taggers. Unlimited ammunition and lives are included in the rate, so there’s no sitting around watching your friends play after an early elimination. There is a progression to more challenging laser tag missions after the first few rounds though, so the quicker you aim better, the higher your chances of survival!

Party Life Cool in the Pool Party All you need for a “Cool in the Pool Party” on a hot summer’s day is to lather on the sunscreen and provide some towels. The water will entertain the kids for hours. • Invitations: Buy some inexpensive sunglasses and attach cards with party details. Or pour a little water into small plastic containers, tint blue and seal the lids shut. Write the party details on the containers with permanent marker. • Pool party cake: Bake a cake and decorate with white icing. Tint some of the white icing blue. Decorate the centre of the cake with this to make the “pool”. Tint shredded coconut green with food colouring and sprinkle around the outside of the pool to make the grass. Insert plastic sharks in the pool for decoration. • Prizes and party bags: Send the guests home with an inflatable pool toy, sunglasses or inexpensive beach towel. • Decorations: Drape fishnets along the fence and attach plastic fish as if they had been caught. Set water toys around the party area. Fill the pool with inner tubes, beach balls etc. • Games: Super Marco Polo (instead of having only one person close their eyes ALL the swimmers must close their eyes and no-one says anything; when Marco Polo catches a swimmer the swimmer swaps places with Marco), Water Volleyball, Escape from Jaws (a form of “catches” with one swimmer chosen as the shark), Gold Diggers (drop coins into the pool and let the kids jump in to get as many as possible), Rescue Rope (lasso items out of the pool with a rope). Each child chooses a simple project: a cross, a mirror or a heart, and covers it with pre-cut mosaic pieces. Then they do their own grouting, with help if needed. Each child goes home with a finished piece to be proud of. Workshops last approximately 21/2 hours and students are welcome to bring refreshments/snacks for a break in the middle. No kits are used. These workshops are suitable as parties for any age from six years and up (five years of age with mother’s help) and can be held at your choice of venue, home, church etc. if preferred. The minimum number of children required is 10 with about 20 as the maximum.

Relaxed Life Cows do it for CHOC

MURALS

CHOC (Childhood Cancer Foundation South Africa) is a countrywide organisation that provides holistic support for children suffering from cancer and lifethreatening blood disorders. It also offers support to the children’s families. In 2008 Kerrin and Grant Bain wanted to do something in memory of their young daughter who died of cancer and so they started the CHOC Cows. To help raise funds for CHOC, the Bains gathered a group of eight people, all willing to do the 94.7 cycle challenge – in a funny costume. The only costume they were able to source in the correct number was a cow costume. And so the “CHOC Cows” were born. In that first year, the eight CHOC Cows raised over R200 000. This year there are 400 “CHOC Cows” who will participate in the 94.7 cycle challenge on 17 November.

Marcelle Delew-Kappen: 083 716 3628 www.marcelledk.co.za

Ross Leah of Mum’s Mail signed up as a CHOC Cow for the 2013 Amashova Race in KZN and raised support ahead of the race. He said: “I am so glad that I decided to ride the Amashova for CHOC, it feels amazing to have done the ride knowing that the money raised is going to a great cause. The support on the ride was amazing from random people standing on the side of the road, all mooing or shouting words of support for the cows. I am most definitely doing this again next year and will hopefully raise more money for CHOC.” Ross raised R8220. To become a CHOC Cow contact Karen de Beer, 086 111 3500. Visit www.choc.org.za.

Zulu Nyala Experience the Magic of Africa Treat your family to a holiday adventure during the next school holidays by visiting The Zulu Nyala Heritage Hotel, based in northern KwaZulu-Natal, just past Hluhluwe. You have the option of staying at the Zulu Nyala Heritage Safari Lodge or, for the adventurous, the luxury safari tents located at the Heritage. Zebra and antelope roam freely, so don’t be surprised if they sneak up. A crocodile enclosure on the property offers a close-up but safe view of the reptiles. Friendly staff members are always willing to assist to make your stay more comfortable. You will be spoilt for choice at breakfast, lunch and dinner buffets or set menus. A visit to Zulu Nyala Private Game Reserve is an opportunity not to be missed. Join the two daily game drives in the reserve’s 4x4 vehicles, accompanied by a ranger. There are a variety of animals, including giraffe, zebra, black and white rhino, hippo, leopard, cheetah, ostrich, wildebeest and more. Visit the Zulu Nyala Cultural Village, whose dancers amaze visitors with their fitness and skill. Inhabitants of the village are able to continue their traditional way of life and you will be taken into the world of a typical Zulu Village, with an insight into how they make baskets or create colourful beadworks. There’s also a demo of the dramatic art of stick fighting, or a peek into divine secrets of destiny through the throwing of bones by the Sangoma (traditional healer). Zulu Nyala’s tagline is “Experience the Magic of Africa” and, after visiting, your family will certainly have done that. Contact: 035 – 562 0177, reservations@zulunyala.com, www.zulunyala.com.

Readers’ Life • I just wanted to say that I saw the insert regarding HOLAH in Mum’s Mail. THANK YOU SO MUCH! Words cannot express our gratitude. Kim and Leanne who run the baby house are so appreciative for the exposure. Idelene Bailey (Delene).

CineCentre

• We just wanted to say THANKS HEAPS for the donations Joy brought round the other day. All the toys, the massive teddy and the shelving! All very helpful and useful at the baby house. Thank you for thinking of us. Kim Brown.

20C483D5 29446dc1 Kids at HOLAH with a donation of toys from a reader • We wish to thank you for the incredible support the KZN Herd of CHOC Cows received during the 2013 Amashova Cycle race. Thank you for publishing our charity drive under your Charity Life page. The cheers, laughter and “mooing” from the crowds was heartwarming and made the journey from the various starts along the route from Pietermaritzburg “Kraal” down to Durban for each and every cow even more special! Our Cows were welcomed to the Durban Kraal with much raucous “cow bell ringing” and “spotted” flag waving at the finish line! Also a big thank you to our sponsors at Spur, the Toy Factory Shop and Kim Joubert Photography for their unbelievable support during our campaign, which we hope to take to greater heights next year! “Media Moo”. Note: Ross Leah of Mum’s Mail, who participated in the event, raised a total of R8220. Send your letters to editor@mumsmail.com. The Editor reserves the right to shorten letters.

Established in 2003, Mum’s Mail has become one of the most indispensable resources for parents, grandparents, teachers, business owners and other interested readers in Durban and surrounding areas, as well as Pietermaritzburg/Midlands. The targeted, specific distribution (LSM 7 – 10) of our free, full colour monthly magazine to créches, pre-schools, primary schools, shopping malls, family and baby clinics, doctors’ rooms, public libraries and selected retail outlets, ensures that your product or service reaches the right market, on time, every time. Mum’s Mail has proven time and again that it has an exceptional shelf life, which is partly due to its practical, A5 format – it’s the ideal size to pop into your handbag or cubby hole. It really is Life’s Little Toolbox!
