Charity Life How to Help in Pietermaritzburg • Angels Care is an NPO that exists to help desperately needy children in the Umngeni area. It started 10 years ago when someone saw a handful of children scratching in their rubbish bin looking for food, and a few volunteers started to feed them. Today Angels Care feeds 300 children every Saturday morning under a thorn tree on the outskirts of Howick. They are supported by the local supermarkets and a dairy with bread and yoghurt. Since Angels Care believes there will never be upliftment without education, they started a bridging school with 15 children in a church hall three mornings a week with a retired teacher. Today there are more than 100 children aged three to six, five days a week. They have five teachers and are registered as an Early Childhood Development Centre. All the children are from single-parent, unemployed homes.

Tiny Life Motherhood: Not What You Expected? Western society today often sets up new mothers for failure through its idealised portrayal of motherhood. Some symptoms of PND include: • Being sad and tearful almost all day, nearly every day for a period of two weeks. • Feeling worthless, hopeless and suffering excessive guilt. • Excessive worry and possibly even panic attacks. • Lack of interest in most things. • Decreased concentration and the ability to make decisions. • Feelings of irritability and frustration. • Sleep changes – sleeping too much or too little. • Appetite changes. • Suicidal thoughts. • Afraid to be alone or on the other hand, withdrawing from others. • Struggling to bond with your baby and maybe even having thoughts of harming your baby. Treatment: The PND Association of S.A. recommends a three-pronged approach to combating PND: medication, psychotherapy and group support. Young Life/Party Life Wings, Wheels and Whistles Since 2005 the Pietermaritzburg Model Engineering Society has annually hosted the “Wings, Wheels and Whistles” hobby exhibition, and every year it has grown bigger and more popular than the year before. The first weekend in August is the date for this year’s exhibition and on this occasion will be combining with the annual National Live Steam meet that brings together a collection of miniature locomotives on a grand scale. The station will come alive as trains arrive and depart to take the winding track through one of the most scenic layouts in the country. Grab a ticket and go for a ride or bring a picnic basket and enjoy the trains going by. As always, the hobbies fair will be in full swing boasting craftsmanship to make your jaw drop. On display will be the work of some of the country’s top Model Engineers. Engines of all shapes and sizes will be brought out and exhibited in the tents, along with the usual collection of visiting hobbies like the Woodworkers Guild that will perform some live demonstrations of their skills on the lathe. If you are interested in participating in the event, whether it be to run or exhibit your locomotive, show your handwork or to just be a spectator, you are more than welcome. This event acts as a stage for the various clubs to present themselves and perhaps gain a member or two.
