Support The Sunflower Fund’s National Bandana Day on 12th October and share a little happiness by purchasing your bandana from Pick n Pay for only R25 (I love the funky bright, neon designs this year). All funds raised through this campaign will allow The Sunflower Fund to share a little happiness by being able to recruit more bone marrow stem cell donors to join the SA Bone Marrow Registry (SABMR). The Sunflower Fund’s work has seen the Registry grow from a mere 800 donors in 2000 to more than 65 500 registered donors today. “This is an achievement, however it’s only the ‘tip of the iceberg’ we need to continue our quest and build the SABMR into a database which has at least 400 000 people registered,” said Tina Botha, Founder-Director of The Sunflower Fund. “Like a perennial sunflower, these bandanas are back in full force every October, blooming bright to remind us all that there are people less fortunate than ourselves who continuously fight against this disease.” For more information on National Bandana Day or how to become a bone marrow stem cell donor, call the toll free line on 0800 12 10 82 or visit www.sunflowerfund.org.za.

Clothing for Stylish Women
challenge & ready yourself for summer! 6 week challenge starts 26 Oct Includes consult & meal plan with sharks dietician
With Renu Slimming Clinic you can drop one to two dress sizes (in the targeted area) with one course of treatments, guaranteed*. This is achieved by use of the following treatments: • For stubborn fat i-lipo is used. This revolutionary low level laser system liquifies subcutaneous fat that the body then converts to usable energy. It’s like liposuction but without the surgery, at a fraction of the cost, and pain free! Body shaping is achieved by positioning the lasers on targeted areas. This gives you the ability to tell your body which fat you want burned off. Areas commonly treated are buttocks, thighs (inner and outer), stomach, love handles, upper arms and chin. • For those who are unable to burn off the liquidised fat through exercise, Renu offers a sauna blanket that burns 600 calories in 40 minutes. It sounds rigorous, but this treatment is quite relaxing. It detoxes and improves circulation as well as having numerous other benefits. • For general slimming Renu can do an organic wrap, which gives dramatic results in just 60 minutes. It detoxes the body, tones and firms the skin, improves the appearance of cellulite, stretch marks and spider veins. Long lasting results are guaranteed*. A course of six treatments is recommended for optimal results. For clients wishing to achieve a weight loss goal, a PET eating plan is provided. Healthy Life/Beautiful Life Breast Cancer & BRCA Testing Breast Cancer Susceptibility Gene 1 (BRCA1) and BRCA2 are human genes that prevent uncontrolled cell growth. Mutation of these genes is linked to hereditary cancer of the breast, ovaries, cervix, uterus, pancreas, prostate, stomach, skin and colon. Although BRCA mutations increase the risk it only accounts for 5% to 10% of all breast cancers. In the general population 12% of females may develop breast cancer whereas in females with positive mutated BRCA 60% may develop breast cancer. Men with a mutated BRCA gene are also at risk of developing breast cancer. The frequency of BRCA mutations is greater in certain racial and ethnic groups. A genetic counsellor assesses the family history of cancer to evaluate if there is increased risk of cancer. The need to test for BRCA mutations is then determined. This risk is higher if a first or second degree relative developed breast (including male relatives) or ovarian cancer. A blood sample is collected for the test. WHO should test for BRCA? In a family with a history of breast/ovarian cancer, that family member should be tested first. Only if that person tests positive should other family members consider testing. A positive test provides information on a person’s RISK of developing cancer as not all women with a positive test will develop cancer. If a person tests positive, it is recommended to have more regular cancer screening tests done. Some women may elect for prophylactic surgery as in the case of Angelina Jolie or to use certain drugs that can decrease the risk of developing cancer. Source: Dr Hilda Ganesen, Family Physician (MBCHB, MMed Fam Med), 031 – 563 4249, drganesen@gmail.com. Managing a family, a home, finances and relationships can become overwhelming. Healthy Life/Beautiful Life Dinner Dance Fundraiser A Dinner Dance is being held to raise much needed funds for The Mitchell Centre. The event takes place on Friday 18 October, 6.30pm at the Alan Paton Hall, Maritzburg College (Princess Margaret Drive Entrance). Dress is formal and the cost is R300 p.p. or R2500 for a table of 10. There will be a 500 Club Ticket Draw with great prizes on the night. Mitchell Buxton Forman, four year old son of Murray and Donna Buxton Forman, a well-known Maritzburg family, has become profoundly handicapped over the past two years due to his severe epilepsy. The Mitchell Centre was born out of a response to Mitchell’s needs and has been opened to other children with special needs. It is at present a home-based, non-profit stimulation centre that caters for children up to the age of 10 who are severely epileptic or disabled (dependent on their needs and mobility). Therapists are able to treat the children on site. The aim of the centre is to allow these special children to have social contact, be stimulated and to aid their development in the most loving way possible. Mitchell was born perfectly healthy but just after his second birthday, in May 2011, he had his first seizure. In June he had his second seizure and it was all downhill from there. It has been almost two years since then. Despite having tried various medications Mitchell now has on average fifteen seizures a day, both in and out of sleep. For more info visit www.parentsofepileptickids.co.za. To book for the Dinner Dance contact Marilyn at rsvp.mitchellcentre@gmail.com.

Young Life/Party Life Cricket School of Excellence Opens in PMB The Cricket School of Excellence (CSE) has been running for the past 14 years in Johannesburg and the Western Cape. The school itself was founded by Ryan Maron and has now expanded to regions throughout the Western Cape, Johannesburg, East London and, most recently, Pietermaritzburg. CSE is a company that focuses on providing cricket-related services to schools, businesses and individuals. Its mission is to develop cricket superstars through cutting edge technical and behavioural training. At this stage they do holiday clinics, private coaching, group coaching, cricketthemed birthday parties and they have an established development programme. The recent launch of CSE in Pietermaritzburg presents junior cricketers in this region with an exciting opportunity to participate in a well-structured and wellorganised cricket programme. CSE works closely with the stakeholders of cricket and aims to develop junior cricketers in line with the pathways systems outlined by Cricket South Africa (CSA) and more international trends. Along with various sponsors CSE aims to promote healthy, active participation for the youth during holiday periods and throughout the year for ages 4 to 18. Holiday clinics in Pietermaritzburg are to take place 9 to 12 December and 6 to 9 January. School term teaching comprises school coaching, private oneon-one coaching and cricket-themed birthday parties.
