Editor’s Life Cows to Cause a Stir at Midmar A herd of cows will be causing a stir at the Aquellé Midmar Mile this February. The eight novice swimmers who form this so-called herd are raising much-needed funds for the Childhood Haematology Oncology Clinics (CHOC) by swimming across the dam in various teams. CHOC is a Non-Profit Organisation that cares for children suffering from cancer. One of the swimmers explained that “the aim of the day is to raise awareness and funds for them [CHOC]” and that “we are doing it for the children, our superheroes.” Last year I told you all about my hubby’s Amashova ride to raise funds for CHOC he cycled in a “cow” outfit. He tends to get roped into these things, whether he wants to or not. With the next “cow” event being the Midmar Mile, I naturally volunteered his services without first checking with him. When I told him what I had done, he replied “ Nothing like a little pressure! I don’t even know if I can swim that far!” Well I imagine we will find out pretty soon...sink or swim... He needs to raise R2000 in order to “qualify” to wear the cow costume, so if you’d like to donate towards this excellent cause, do let me know. Even R50 will help CHOC raise much needed funds. If you’d like to also join the herd and swim the Midmar Mile for CHOC, contact daisy@thecows.co.za for more information on how to join the herd and make a difference.

Laidback Life Books & Books Reviews • A Room Full of Chocolate by Jane Elson (Kids 10-12 years). Grace’s world falls apart when her mum falls ill and she is sent to live with her granddad on his farm in Yorkshire while her mum goes into hospital to get better. Things go from bad to worse when she starts school and becomes the bullies’ latest target. She meets Megan and Claude, her pig. When she’s with them she feels as if she can confront anything. At Easter when Grace misses her mum the most, she knows she must find a way to get to London. With Megan’s help, she hatches a runaway plan that involves Claude, chocolate Easter eggs and a risky ID swap. But it’s all worth it if it means that she finally gets to see her mum ...A gorgeous story of courage and friendship that will tug at your heart strings. • Mission Survival: Strike of the Shark by Bear Grylls (Kids 10-12 years). When Beck Granger is shipwrecked in the open seas, he needs all of his survival skills to save a small group of passengers. But the sinking was no accident. In order to stay alive, he’ll have to work out who wants him dead, and why. That is, if the sharks don’t get him first... an explosive adventure from real-life survival expert Bear Grylls. • Choosing Crumble by Michael Rosen (Kids 5-9 years). TerriLee is applying for a new job. She arrives at the pet shop and is led into a back office for her interview. Apple Crumble, the dog, is sitting behind the desk. Crumble grills Terri-Lee about his basket, vet trips and what he’ll get to eat. Crumble is very particular about his owners; will Terri-Lee’s dance moves and tickling be enough to convince Crumble that she should get the job? A funny, feel-good read. • No Matter What by Debi Gliori (Kids’ picture books). This story revolves around two characters, Large (a parent) and Small (a child). Small is “grim and grumpy and says “nobody loves me at all”. Large provides reassurance that Small will always be loved, grumpy or not. The author addresses the difficult issue of what happens to love when a parent dies. Large shows Small the night sky, and explains that some of the stars died a long time ago, but they continue to glow and shine brightly. Each swimmer involved is obtaining sponsorship per mile covered and some swimmers are even taking on the longer distances on Monday 10 February to raise much needed funds. According to Stephanie Berry, PR & Events Specialist in Durban, the Midmar Mile is the world’s largest open water swimming race and also happens to be the most prestigious swimming race in South Africa. “It is both heart-warming and encouraging to see sportsmen and women eagerly supporting The Fund by doing the activity they are so passionate about. The funds they raise allow us to recruit more donors to the SABMR, bringing hope to all the patients who are so desperately searching for their perfect donor match, says Stephanie. Delicious Life Table Talk Jar: Bringing Back Family Dinner I have a confession to make. We have been known to eat dinner while watching TV. Even worse, some evenings we eat dinner while Jon and I watch our favourite TV show, and Emily watches her favourite show on the iPad. Oh, the shame! But seriously, it’s not my favourite thing. Growing up, my family always talked around the dinner table. I’m convinced that it was a large contributing factor to our closeness as a family. I remember laughing around the table, talking about life, and growing as a family. I loved that. I want that for my own family. So, I decided to take matters into my own hands and outlaw TV during dinner. Even so, we needed a little help in the conversation department. Enter my table talk jar: It’s a plain old big jar, fancied up with a little bit of tulle. And filled with ice-cream sticks that I wrote questions on. Questions like “What would you do if you found R100?” and “What’s your earliest childhood memory?” It’s so much fun. How about you? Do you need some help getting conversations started around the table? Here’s how you can make your own Table Talk Jar: • Get a jar. • Get some ice-cream sticks/slips of paper. • Go to a website to find questions. • Write questions on the sticks/paper and pop into the jar. • Put the jar on the table and choose a stick/paper when having dinner. • Answer the question and enjoy rowdy conversation and laughter! Constantia Shutters... The Latest Craze and taken onto the front lawn and literally Shutters: hosed off to get rid of any dirt that may The Latest Craze have collected on it. Shutters have become the window covering fashion of choice. The newly launched Constantia Shutters from The Top Carpets Group offer the full range of shutter options, from solid timber, to non-wood options and the ever popular security aluminium shutters. Top sellers at the moment are the non-wood shutters made from a man-made compound which means the shutter is completely maintenance free, fire retardant, antimicrobial, child safe as well as warp and chip proof. It is an ideal application for steamy bathrooms, children’s play rooms and busy kitchens. In terms of energy efficiency it is remarkable. It is non-porous and nonabsorbent with a permanent finish which cannot warp, chip, crack, peel or fade ever! Easily cleaned with soap and water each shutter panel can be easily unhinged

Unlike other wooden or competitive nonwood shutters, the Classic Shutter offers exceptional light control and complete privacy as it closes tightly in both directions. There are no unsightly “mouse holes” or staples that may rust over time. Cheaper than wooden shutters, they are the ideal solution for our coastal homes. Classic Shutters are the very essence of style and sleek functionality. Available in hinged, bi-fold and sliding modules they are custom-made to suit your individual needs. Home Life Home Improvements: Do I need Planning Permission?

WE CLEAN

As a general rule, you will need plans or planning permission for all building work except minor alterations inside your home that do not involve structural work or elevation change (i.e. changing a window size externally). Check this first with your local authority as each area has different requirements (for example where your alterations impact on increased F.A.R. [floor area ratio or coverage] plans will most probably be required). A phone call or personal visit to your local authority at the outset can save you a lot of problems later on. Where any special structural design is involved, you may also require the services of a registered structural engineer. Please allow for municipal submissions in your budget. Remember failing to submit plans is illegal in terms of not only National Building Regulations but that of your local municipality as well and the worrying aspect is that when you come to sell, a rates-clearance certificate will need to be issued. This is done against the backdrop of your “latest” submitted plans approved and your actual situation. Most councils retain the right to “back charge” on rates and levies or to adjust rates as punitive measures to enforce co-operation in this regard. In addition your home sale could be held up on transfers if discrepancies are found by Council – a chance not worth taking!

Healthy Life Living a Healthy Life

The eating plan was also simple to follow. It was not restrictive or prescriptive – in fact the biggest change I made was cutting out carbs at supper time!

Healthy Lifestyle Awareness Month With only two months until my wedding, November 2013, I had resolved to eat healthily and exercise regularly. That, however, is easier said than done. But luckily, I stumbled upon B-Fit studios which is conveniently situated opposite Body Guru Gym in Umhlanga. I eagerly signed up for the B-Wedding Fit package which allowed me to attend unlimited classes and gave me access to a personalised eating plan.

All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed every class and was so pleased to see improvements, from week to week, in my body strength and shape. The added value of a programme like this, is that I have been able to take away, not just a fitter and better looking body for my wedding, but a healthy lifestyle that I can happily embrace long term.

Brenna van Straaten, the owner and personal trainer at B-Fit, runs classes of up to six clients, and provides each with friendly and personal attention. Each class is different and contains variety. A class typically comprises a circuit of exercises, using different equipment, combining both strength and cardio.

31

B-Fit offers a range of different classes and packages. Contact Brenna van Straaten on 082 904 4147 or visit www.facebook.com/ bfitstudios for more information. By Robyn Turton.

Healthy Life Teen Suicide Prevention Week 16 to 22 February Most people don’t just wake up and decide that today will be the day they commit suicide. Suicide is normally the last straw of a long, difficult road, which looks a little like this: We all have hopes, dreams, desires and expectations of life. Things like being loved, being accepted, looking a certain way, achieving certain goals, having good health and the like. Sadly we don’t have control over many of these things. We can’t make someone love or accept us, we can’t choose how we look, etc. When these hopes and desires are repeatedly dashed, blocked or just plainly unattainable it can lead to anger or even rage. In time undealt-with rage degenerates into despair. Undealt-with despair eventually turns into apathy. Once a person no longer cares hopelessness has set in and the desire for life and survival fades. This is a classic journey for depression and the final destination can be suicide. However there is always hope. The key is to catch the signs early enough to address the emotions. The power of talking about how we feel is that it actually releases the negative emotions that build inside of us. Depression may also need to be medically treated. Just like you shouldn’t wait until cancer has reached stage four before you seek help, don’t wait until the psychological symptoms of suicide are knocking on death’s door. Address it early. The key to any suicide prevention is to talk. Send your relationship questions to: Madz at madz@grace.za.org

Within us all there is the ability to be whole...

Healthy Life All About Nails Nails are an integral part of the human body. They are made of a tough protein called keratin. The nail consists of many different components which play a vital role in ensuring the integrity of the nail unit. A healthy fingernail has the function of protecting the tip of the finger and the surrounding soft tissue from injuries. It also serves to enhance precise delicate movements of the fingers. The nail functions as a tool, enabling the user to grip, cut and scrape objects.

A medical practitioner often uses the nails as a cursory indicator of certain conditions. Deep transverse grooves known as Beau’s Lines may form across the nails and are usually a consequence of disease. Discolouration, thinning, thickening, brittleness, splitting, pitting, grooves and spooning may indicate illness, nutritional deficiencies, drug reactions and skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis and fungal infections. For more info on nail conditions visit your dermatologist.

Healthy Life DNAlysis Biotechnology

DESHNI PILLAY

Audiologist & Speech Therapist P.R. No. 0327492

DNAlysis is a strategy of managing your weight and wellness according to your genetic profile. The science of nutritional genomics means we can identify our personal dietary recommendations. DNAlysis is a biotechnology leader in S.A. that has developed a range of DNA tests clever enough to identify specific genes linked with optimal health, weight loss and weight management. This pioneering technology then offers you nutritional supplementation advice according to your unique genetic profile. All that’s required of you is a simple swab inside your cheek. That gives DNAlysis enough to identify physiological processes that may not be functioning ideally. This provides a clinical foundation from which to make recommendations unique to the individual. You can now base your dietary planning and exercise programmes according to your personal genetic differences in metabolism, lipolysis and at absorption.

The retirement lump sum: In order to retire comfortably it is estimated that we need a retirement income equal to 75% of our final salary. To meet this requirement on the day you retire, you will need to have savings worth about 16 times your annual salary. So, if your annual salary in the last year of working is R500 000, you would need investment assets of R8 million in order to generate an income equal to 75% of your salary.

Skin Needling (or Collagen Induction Therapy) describes a tattoo procedure in which the healing process results in improved skin texture and thickening of the dermis. Skin Needling actually creates thicker skin and improves the integrity of the skin. The procedure is used to reduce wrinkles, laxity, acne scarring, pits, discolourations, stretch marks, surgical scarring, and burn and trauma scarring. It is simple, safe, painless, has NO complications and clients consistently get great results. A Mini Face Lift is a non-surgical face lift using a tattoo rotary machine and a large needle compilation to lift and tone the face and neck. A full facial workout includes targeting ageing areas such as: sagging skin, wrinkles, droopy eyes, brows, cheeks, naso-labial line, jowls and double chin, giving an even face lift, toning, elasticising and using your own collagen. It makes your face and neck naturally balanced and gives it a more youthful look.

Beautiful Life How Can I Improve the Condition of My Skin Whilst on a Budget? The most cost-effective way to improve your skin’s appearance is a skin peel. Peels vary in strength, type and effectiveness. Two to six peels are usually required to obtain desired results. Glycolic peels require no social hibernation and you can return to work with firmer, more hydrated and glowing skin. Salicylic acid peels are useful for acne sufferers and cause mild flaking. Stronger peels are usually more expensive and require special creams to moisturise the skin. They address wrinkles, sun spots and scars and normally take one to two weeks for recovery. Mesotherapy facials also address textural and pigmentation imperfections. It is an extremely effective treatment that involves tiny injections into the skin. The microscopic tears in the skin, caused by the needle, promote better tissue healing as the skin is flooded with new collagen resulting in firming and lifting. Special serums are also applied to aid in brightening and hydration. Although pricier than the basic peel, mesotherapy offers good value for money and a skin peel is often included in the treatment. PRP (platelet rich plasma) is a new revolutionary tool in anti-ageing. Known as the vampire facial, it is particularly helpful for acne scarring, sun damage and wrinkled skin or to maintain healthy skin. By taking a small sample of your own blood, the cells responsible for forming new collagen are separated and then injected directly into the face. This causes improved healing and restoration of healthy skin. Usually two to three treatments are required per year. Results are excellent. Beautiful Life Weigh-Less: Top Tips for Teens, Tweens & Parents • Teach children to avoid foods and beverages that contain refined sugars and other junk foods. • Replace these foods with wholesome foods that strengthen the body rather than causing sometimes irreparable damage. • Limit take-away foods and junk foods and high-energy snacks • Replace with homemade wholesome food. • Replace chips, chocolate etc. with yoghurts, crackers, airpopped popcorn, fruit slices, biltong, the list is endless! • Teach children to drink water – it is the foundation of life! • Teach portion control. • Regular exercise does not mean a regime of strong exercise – it can mean a walk around your block, it can mean playing a game of soccer or cricket in the garden, swingball, helping out in the garden. • Limit TV watching, cell phone use, video games and encourage a good read or a game of hide and seek. • Encourage “Family Together” time. Gather the family around at meal times. • Pray together. • Lead by example – when parents make smart healthy living choices, children tend to follow this lead. It effectively teaches and encourages a healthier way so they can grow into healthy, smart adults themselves. The Weigh-Less Tweens and Teens Programme is an easy-to-follow eating plan, and a child-friendly version of the Weigh-Less eating plan that has been specially designed for children between the ages of nine and 18. It includes a handy guide on what to expect, tasty recipes, menu plan, and a “Kids Only” food list.

Beautiful Life Five Good Reasons for Mums to Practice Yoga As we get older and have more responsibilities, it can be challenging to find time for exercise and relaxation. Yoga offers both! Yoga is not just movement — it is the linking of movement, breath and intention. The movements or postures are especially good for a new mum wanting to tone her core and strengthen her back. The attention to breath brings the yoga practitioner into a meditative, calm frame of mind, even while the postures may bring up the heart rate. Indeed, yoga offers an opportunity to put the body in a slightly stressed/stretched position, while the mind remains calm and the breathing smooth. This practice, then, can be carried off the yoga mat into the “real world.” In the stressful situations that constantly crop up in our busy lives, our yoga practice reminds us to breathe and to keep the mind calm and focused. Many people say they would like to try yoga, but are concerned they are not flexible enough, or have self-esteem problems regarding their body shapes. A good yoga teacher will remind her students that we all just need to start exactly where we are — wherever you find yourself as you move and stretch is perfect — no judgment. Yoga teaches us to balance contentment with exactly what is happening in the moment with a focused commitment to being the best we can be. Here, then, are five good reasons many people practice yoga: • Makes you feel happy and relaxed • Increases flexibility • Increases strength • Decreases stress •Improves immune system. Beautiful Life Moms Re-Entering the Job Market Angelique Robbertse of Job Mail says there are lots of opportunities for moms wanting to re-enter the workplace. “There’s no need to feel that you are not useful to the working community. You have acquired skills whilst looking after your children that are valuable to any industry,” she says. Moms are great at multi-tasking and organising, working long hours and training. Having said that, to make yourself as marketable as possible, Angelique advices up-skilling and gives the following advice: • Stay in-the-loop by means of learning, self-teaching, taking part in discussions and even volunteering. Regularly take short courses offered online. Do research on the Internet, join chat groups and forums. Stay in touch with ex-colleagues and employers.

Google plus. Nowadays your online presence (or your digital footprint) speaks volumes about you and whether or not you are employable. It will show that you are current and relatable, and these days, lots of recruiters spy out possible candidates online before employing them. Use online job portals, such as Job Mail, to register your CV and apply for jobs. Be proactive, keep your CV fresh and up-to-date, apply daily and follow up on applications. • Unfortunately age does matter when it comes to employment, but with some clever self-marketing you can still find employment if you are an older lady. Be young and fresh in your thinking and attitude and the way you present yourself. Dress and style your hair in a modern way, and be informed on the latest trends and industry news/practices. Young Life Spend More Time with Your Children by Working from Home

Safety and Survival Academy

CONFIDENT | OBSERVANT | PREPARED | SAFE

Car pools, lunch bags, after-school activities, dinner, homework, bath time, bedtime – all these responsibilities pile up on top of your own job and the other realities of adulthood. Each day with young kids feels like a week, each week like a month. Yet as every birthday passes, the years seem to be streaking by at warp speed, our adult lives often preventing us from fully appreciating the delicate nuances of our children’s lives. When you add up all the time your kids spend at daycare, in school, asleep, at friends’ homes, with babysitters, at camp, and otherwise occupied with activities that don’t include you, the remaining moments become especially precious. There are only 940 Saturdays between a child’s birth and her leaving for college. That may sound like a lot, but how many have you already used up? If your child is five years old, 260 Saturdays are gone. Poof! And the older your kids get, the busier their Saturdays are with friends and activities. Ditto Sundays. And what about weekdays? Depending on your children’s ages and whether you work outside the home, there may be as few as one or two hours a day during the week for you to spend with them. Hopefully one day you will greet your children’s departure with a profound sense of satisfaction because you’ve given them what they need to succeed and also given yourself what you need to feel like a successful parent. Optimise the time you spend with your kids by opening up your own healthcare practice from home. Contact Taryn for info. Young Life The Basics About Balance Balance is a multi-sensory activity that enables us to know where our bodies are in the environment and to maintain a certain position. Normal balance depends on information from the inner ear (vestibular system), other senses (such as sight and touch) and muscle movement (motor skills and proprioception).

DU

Our sense of balance is specifically regulated by a complex interaction between the following parts of the nervous system: • The inner ears (also called the labyrinth) monitor the directions of motion, such as turning or forward-backward/ side-to-side/up-and-down. • The eyes observe where the body is in space (i.e. upside down, right side up etc.) and also the directions of motion. • Skin pressure receptors such as those located in the feet sense what part of the body is down and touching the ground. • Muscle and joint sensory receptors report what parts of the body are moving. • The central nervous system (the brain and spinal cord) processes all the bits of information from the four other systems to make some coordinated sense out of it all. Ideas to improve balance: Start with static (while standing still) balance before moving on to dynamic (while moving) balance. Start by doing these tasks with your eyes open and then with your eyes closed – be safe and do it under supervision: • Kick a ball while kneeling – use your knees. • Jump with a ball held between your feet. • Hop-scotch. • Jump on one leg. • Stand on one leg. • Walk on a balancing beam. • Stand on your toes. • Stand heel-toe. • Play Twister. • Walk on your heels. ’

Young Life Giving Kids the Right Start by Involving Them in Mealtimes Planting a veggie garden is an excellent way to get kids involved in mealtimes. If they grow their own food, they are more likely to eat it. Planting a vegetable or even simply a herb garden allows children to learn where their greens come from and how they grow. Allow your child to water the patch themselves and even pull out weeds. This teaches them responsibility and ownership. When the time comes, let your child pick and wash the fruit, vegetables or herbs to be used in the meal preparation and involve your child as much as possible. If planting a garden is not possible, take your child out on family outings to nearby farms or at the very least fresh food markets.

Tiny Life Dealing with SIDS Sudden infant death syndrome commonly referred to as SIDS, can probably be put at the top of the list of parents’ most dreaded fears. Although the exact mechanism of the syndrome is poorly understood, the dreaded outcome is waking up to an infant that may have already been dead for a few hours, with zero chance of resuscitation. International Authorities and Councils that provide guidelines for the most upto-date recommendations for both basic and advanced life support, implements a “chain of survival”, essentially a chain comprising steps that need to be followed in order for the best possible outcome or survival for adults and children suffering respiratory or cardiac arrest. Because infants generally suffer cardiac arrest secondary to a primary respiratory dysfunction, the prompt administration of rescue breaths along with basic airway opening techniques can almost always result in the return of spontaneous respirations and normal respiratory function, and successful resuscitation by advanced care providers thereafter.

The trouble with SIDS is, because death occurs silently, by the time parents are aware of the situation, irreversible death has occurred. The first link in the paediatric chain of survival is the “early awareness” link. We can therefore place the correct use of an Angelcare baby monitor directly into this first important link in the paediatric chain of survival, as awareness of SIDS and the use of an Angelcare monitor provides parents with the awareness and ability to react to breathing difficulties or respiratory arrest suffered by sleeping infants as they occur. Angelcare monitors that are purchased through Dischem outlets are refundable by most medical aids in South Africa, including Discovery and Bonitas. Source: phil@mediamoms.co.za. www.mumsmail.com

Tiny Life Bites and Stings Can Be Dangerous

“The gentle approach to baby swimming“

Mosquitoes and ticks can carry illnesses such as malaria and tick bite fever. However, an estimated 3% of the population, are also highly sensitive to certain insect and spider venoms and can develop severe reactions to them. Bee allergies: People who are allergic to bee stings need to take particular care because even one sting can be dangerous, causing a life-threatening allergic reaction and anaphylactic shock. Consequently, they should wear a medical bracelet and carry an adrenalin injection and antihistamine pills with them at all times as per the advice of a medical doctor.

Spiders and scorpions: South Africa has many different spider and scorpion species, many of which are not venomous. If you’re not sure what has bitten or stung you, visit your nearest emergency department. Try to remember as many details as possible so that you can receive the appropriate treatment. If at all possible, take a picture of the creature that has bitten you using your cell phone camera. Scorpion stings are rarely fatal in South Africa, but they can be extremely painful, causing sweating, heart palpitations, rising blood pressure, nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea. The three medically important spiders in South Africa are the Black Button Spider, the Violin Spider and the Sac Spider. Bluebottles and jellyfish: Every year many South Africans are stung by bluebottles, and less commonly by jellyfish. If you get stung do not rub the affected area but rather rinse it with seawater. Alleviate the burn by applying vinegar or alcohol to the sting and treat the area with topical antihistamine creams or calamine lotion. Source: Netcare Travel Clinic. 59

Tiny Life Caring for Baby’s First Teeth Baby teeth act as placeholders for adult teeth. Without a healthy set of milk teeth, young children will experience trouble chewing and forming words and sounds, when learning to speak. They also affect the way a child’s jaw grows. The Pampers® Institute, together with paediatric dentist, Dr Imraan Hoosen, share some top tips on caring for baby’s first teeth: Teething troubles: Generally, teeth start appearing at four to seven months of age, but every baby is different. The first teeth to appear are usually the two bottom front teeth. Teething may be painless but sometimes can make babies uncomfortable and fussy. Teething does not cause a fever. A child’s discomfort can be relieved through offering a cold teething ring or a cold washcloth to chew or suck on, as well as rubbing the gum with a clean finger. Dr Hoosen advises against administering baby aspirin. Caring for baby’s gums: Begin caring for baby’s gums right away by gently wiping baby’s gums twice a day with a soft, moistened washcloth or piece of gauze. Brushing first teeth: When the first baby teeth start to appear, a soft toothbrush with a small head and large handle should be used. At first, just wet the toothbrush. At around the age of one year, parents can begin using a pea-sized amount of nonfluoridated toothpaste. Wait to introduce fluoride toothpaste until children are at least two years old. The most common causes of irresponsible dental care: • Parents allowing babies to sleep with bottles filled with milk or juice. • Parents perpetuating an unhealthy diet high in refined sugar, fizzy drinks and undiluted juice. • Parents allowing older children to play contact sports without a mouth guard.

Educated Life Help, I Have a Home School! Let’s face it, for a long time the concept of home schooling was something completely unnatural to most people who went through the traditional schooling system. Home school learners were viewed as strange and unconventional. However, over the years this “foreign” concept has become increasingly popular and even favoured! Perhaps you were one of those people who secretly liked the idea of home schooling but needed some convincing. After much discussion and prayer, you and your spouse decided to go for it! Several months or years down the line you’re confident that you have chosen the best curriculum for your children – one that incorporates both sound teaching methods and a Biblical foundation, but perhaps well-meaning family members have questioned your decision, and words like “socialisation” have been thrown at you. Maybe you’ve started to wonder whether you’ve done the right thing by choosing to home school in the first place. Let us encourage and remind you that the results speak for themselves. Children who are home schooled generally turn out to be better behaved than traditionally schooled children. Their grades prove to be higher, and these learners are better equipped to excel in their tertiary studies. It shouldn’t come as a surprise to learn that, statistically, home school graduates end up being quite capable of functioning in the “real world.” The home school model lends itself towards equipping children with good, solid social skills. Home schooling is what you make it. Source: Sue Searles, Accelerated Christian Education (A.C.E.) Educated Life School Entrepreneur Young, Durban-based Sarah Tryon is the proud owner of her fourth school in the Durban area. Whilst doing the third year of her BCom Management Degree in 2006 Sarah bought Jungle Cubs, a well-known pre-school in Durban North.

Being a wife and mother herself, Sarah is a very busy businesswoman. To ensure the smooth running of her schools, a manager has been appointed at Sunningdale. Sarah is also ably assisted by her Education Principal, Lariaan Claassens, and supported by an Educational Director (her mom, Carol Meyer). For more info contact: Sarah Tryon, 031 – 563 7597.

Part of a family well-established in the education field, Sarah always wanted to own an-already existing school. After some changes which stamped her personal touch on the school, Jungle Cubs grew to its capacity of 150 children in just three months and has been full ever since. The large outdoor playground is a feature of the school and something Sarah particularly values.

Soaring to Excellence!

•Warm & caring environment • Excellent educational programme • Small intimate classes • Nutritious home cooked meals • Occupational Therapist & Speech Therapist on board

After many requests from parents to provide a co-ed, private primary school with guaranteed small classes, Sarah started Hamptons Primary next door to Jungle Cubs in 2012. The school currently caters for Grades 1 to 3 and will eventually go up to Grade 7. Then, half way through 2013, Kidz Corner, a pre-school in Yellowwood Park, was put on the market. Sarah took over this school, and followed that just a few months later with Sunningdale Pre-Primary. All three pre-schools cater for children from the age of three months to Grade R. Whilst changes are made to the premises and running of the schools, they are done with sensitivity as Sarah is mindful of parents’ and children’s need for stability.

Educated Life Nelson Mandela Heritage Sites • Nelson Mandela Capture Site: On 5 August 1962, Nelson Mandela was captured by the South African Police on the R103 about 5km outside the town of Howick in the Natal Midlands of KZN. Mandela was posing as a chauffeur after a clandestine visit to ANC leader, Albert Luthuli to request support for an armed struggle. This unassuming spot has now become a memorial to the great man. Apart from the very interesting sculpture depicting Mandela’s image and his long walk to freedom, the Apartheid Museum, the uMngeni Municipality and the KZN Heritage Council, have established the Truth Café and the Truth Store at the site and free tours are offered. • Inanda Heritage Route: During S.A.’s first democratic elections Nelson Mandela chose to vote at Ohlange High School in Inanda as a way of honouring the first President of the ANC, John Langalibalele Dube, who is buried at the site. The Inanda Heritage Route takes guests to this school as well as to the Inanda Seminary, a private girls’ school, which, unlike other private schools of its kind at the beginning of apartheid, was not closed down. This was because the government of the day saw no threat in educating girls. Steeped in interesting history this institution is well worth a visit. A final stop is to a museum dedicated to Mahatma Ghandi. The museum was the former leader’s house and each room is filled with plaques describing his philosophy, explaining historic moments and displaying quotes. Charity Life How to Help • The LEARN Project aims to establish Reading Centres and Programmes in schools that are currently without reading books and to encourage a love for reading and learning in both teachers and learners. This aim is supported by a buddy system with more fortunate schools where Collection Points for second-hand stationery and preloved books encourage learners to “reuse and recycle” any stationery or books they no longer need, donating them to help those who are less fortunate to excel at school. You can help by: donating books and stationery supplies; covering and sorting books; visiting schools in need; setting up Reading Centres in these schools; establishing Collection Points at your own school or company; financial contributions. Contact Ros Toerien, 071 853 4473, ros@thelearnproject.co.za. • South African Guide-Dogs is not just for the visually impaired. Daniel, a young boy in Pretoria, suffers from the effects of Autism. Vossie, his “social dog”, has made such a difference in Daniel’s life (especially as he tended to isolate himself and not have friends) that he is now less frustrated and has a devoted, playful and patient best friend. Support S.A. Guide-Dogs. Contact 039 – 973 0387, info@guidedog.org.za, www.guidedog.co.za. • Register as a Do-Gooder at lovetodogood.org.za. Identify a charity you believe in. Create a fundraising campaign for this project by being selfless (giving up birthday gifts, for example), adventurous (walk, run or cycle – use your imagination), or getting rid of that habit you’ve always wanted to kick. Now share your campaign with your friends, family and social network and ask people to contribute. Source: Lwazi Ngwenya. • SOS Children’s Villages was established in S.A. in 1982 and now has villages across the country. SOS believes that children can develop to their full potential only if they have a supportive and protective family environment. SOS works to make this a reality. At the core of the SOS programmes is the individual child who has lost the security of a well-functioning family. What is best for the child guides their work. They focus on each child’s care, education and health and encourage children to actively take part in the decision-making that affects their lives. To support SOS Children’s Villages contact 011 – 234 8708, info@sos.org.za, www.sos.org.za. • Hearts to Hands provides relief services by giving food parcels and clothing to 250 poor families a month. These families are located in Kwadabeka, Chesterville, Lamontville, Noordsberg, Cato Manor, Addington and Mariannridge. Families are referred to Hearts to Hands by Cast community workers and social workers. Each food parcel costs R110 and contains enough food for a family of four for two weeks. Relaxed Life Headphones Deliver the Beat David Guetta challenged Beats by Dr Dre to create the perfect set of worldclass ear cups. One year and thousands of prototypes later, Beats by Dr Dre in collaboration with the fourth highest ranked DJ in the world, Guetta, are proud to present one of the lightest, loudest and most durable headphones ever. The new Neon Mixr promises to blow any professional or amateur DJ away. Apart from the obvious change to cool, neon colours these headphones also offer improved ergonomics, revised headband tension and a unique carrying case. Its focus is on well-known Beats by Dre deep base coupled with high volume and it is designed to push the audio from the headphones above the music in a club. The Neon Mixr’s rotating ear cups can swivel back and forth to offer DJs the option of switching between the one cup playing the current track and the other to listen to a pre-play track. Brenda Daniels of Mum’s Mail tried out Beats and had this to say: “The headphones are really comfortable and don’t press on the head too much. I could hear the words of the songs really well and picked out instruments you don’t hear when listening without them. I felt like a real DJ in my own world when using Beats!”

Have you not had enough of this crime? If so, why not then use your cell phone to help fight it and keep your hands clean? Your eyes and cell are your only involvement. See how many other residents in your area are already taking part. JOIN THEM! Let’s fight this crime together!

The Mixr headphones are now available in neon blue, yellow, orange or pink. For the less daring the headphones also come in gloss or matte black, white and red variants. Relaxed Life Roadhogs “Roadhogs was established in 2000 and has been running ever since. The initial intention was to produce a website that was a fun way to name and shame bad drivers, but over the years, the site has become a very well-known way to bring awareness to a huge problem we have on our roads.” Law-abiding drivers, urges Roadhogs (http://www.roadhogs. co.za), can: “Report the bad drivers 100% anonymously and for FREE in the safety and comfort of their home/office. Take photos, upload the pictures, name and shame them, in fact say whatever you want to get the stress off your shoulders...” Alice Leah, Editor of Mum’s Mail, is all for the site: “I must say I love this idea as it drives me mad when people have kids on the front seat that aren’t strapped in and standing up!”

MAKE IT RAIN Use What • Wide-mouthed jar such as a pickle jar • Small plate • Ice cubes • Hot water Do What 1. Pour 2 inches of hot water into the jar 2. Cover it with the plate 3. Let it sit for approximately three minutes 4. Then set the ice cubes on top of the plate So What Watch as the water starts to condense on the sides of the jar, falling down the same way rain does in the atmosphere.

Charlotte of S.A.D.D. (South Africans Against Drunk Drivers) agrees: “We definitely promote anything that exposes reckless and dangerous driving. Unfortunately one of the reasons we have the sixth worst road death statistics in the world – with more than 40 people dying on our roads EACH day – is that we have so little law enforcement… I think there could well be some very positive outcomes in that companies may well start checking their company vehicles on the website and taking disciplinary action if their employees have transgressed.” Despite the website’s claim that Roadhogs was designed for drivers to take out their frustrations online instead of on the roads, Brenda Daniels, Subeditor of Mum’s Mail, thinks this site may actually incite road rage. “It’s the authorities we should petition to do their jobs better so that they, the legislated bodies, deal with these road offenders.” Readers, what do you think?
