Editor’s Life Surprise Weekend Away I am so lucky to have the most amazing husband. He treated me to a surprise long weekend away in Cape Town for Valentine’s Day – no kids! I had not been to Cape Town for many years, and not since it had been voted the number one tourist destination in the world. It was very easy to see why straight away. • Everything is clean and beautiful – no litter, no potholes. • The public transport system (that works) is utilised by so many locals and visitors. • The staff at the hotel are friendly, all the time, and nothing is too much trouble. • The service at restaurants and pubs is brisk and efficient (with the exception of one restaurant at the Waterfront). • Kalk Bay was my absolute favourite place to visit – the main road is lined with quaint little shops (and I have found the business I want to buy when I retire – the local Kalk Bay bookshop). • Hout Bay was my favourite place to eat – Chapman’s Peak Hotel serves THE best calamari in the world. • The beaches are stunning, and once your extremities go numb, the water is really not that cold. • The views are world class – as gorgeous as Italy, but cleaner. And yet I won’t be moving to the fairest Cape any time soon – you just cannot beat our KZN weather ALL year round. While I may not be a born and bred Natalian, I think I have been here long enough to finally qualify to be called a “local”.

The Cooke’s Kitchen also conducts cooking courses for staff. These courses run for five days at a time, three hours a day. Students will do some theory during that time, for example kitchen hygiene and first aid in the household. They will also cook a meal for that night for the family to crit. The following day students go over the crit in class and discuss where things went wrong and how things can be improved for the meal next time. At the end of the five days the domestic worker receives a certificate to say she’s completed the course. Arthritis comes in various forms, the most serious being Rheumatoid arthritis. The word “arthritis” sounds like a death sentence but actually means joint inflammation. It is not a disease that needs to be treated with chemotherapy. Misaligned vertebrae in the neck interfere with nerves that are supposed to dilate arteries that deliver raw materials to the bursae. Bursae are membranes found in all joints including the shoulders, arms and hands. These bursae make synovial fluid which is a lubricant. When the neck becomes misaligned it results in the joints drying up. Friction, heat inflammation and pain follow, usually in that order. Chiropractic results in the nerves being freed, allowing the arteries to dilate and once more deliver the blood with the necessary raw materials. Every arthritis patient Dr Powell has seen in the last 40 years had two things in common: loss of lordosis (anterior curve) in the neck and a misaligned C/5-C/6 area of the lower neck. All responded to accurate adjusting of the offending vertebrae. Fibromyalgia and rheumatism respond similarly. In fact all health problems begin to resolve when the neck is properly adjusted. Everyone should have their necks checked, as this is the key to improved health, physically, mentally and socially.

Extensive hair loss or thinning hair can be the result of poor diet, weight loss, certain medication and medical conditions, hormonal imbalances, stress, heredity, or damage from pulling of hair by hair extensions, hair straighteners or curlers. It is important to consult with a doctor for a full medical to determine the possible cause for the hair loss. Athome measures to avoid further hair loss include ensuring that a healthy balanced diet is followed with adequate protein, iron and fresh vegetables. B12, folate, zinc and vitamin D are important for healthy hair formation (a good multivitamin is therefore important). Exercise, yoga and meditation can help to manage stress levels. Regular shampooing is vital but avoid shampoos which contain harsh detergents or chemicals such as sodium lauryl sulphate. Use of a conditioner helps to hydrate hair and prevents further breakage. Treat hair gently and avoid tension on strands. Hair extensions, straighteners and curlers should be kept to a minimum with lower heat settings. Dry hair shampoos can keep hair looking fuller for in-between washes and use of hair-building fibres, such as Toppik®, help to realistically disguise thinning hair. Medicated shampoos are helpful with oral medication also available for severe or resistant cases. Mesotherapy scalp injections with vitamins and hyaluronic acid is an alternative natural treatment. Educated Life Holy Family College Holy Family College is a school with a long and proud tradition. The Sisters of the Holy Family Congregation came to Durban from Bordeaux, France in 1875, in response to a request from Bishop Jolivet, who asked them to establish a “school for young ladies” in the town. It is, however, important to keep in mind that each child develops at his/her own pace. The moment a child’s performance is impaired/influenced/limited in a life sphere (school, play, social skills, self-care) the child should be referred to occupational therapy. Examples of problem areas: Fine eye-hand coordination: This is the ability to use eyes and hands together to perform a task. Invitations: Use old newspapers to create your invitations. Add printed party details to newspaper pages. When the kids read the headlines they’ll find they’re invited to a party! Recycled cupcakes: Prepare a cupcake mixture. Clean a variety of small cans and remove all jagged edges. Grease the cans and pour cupcake mixture into them. Bake, cool, decorate and serve in the cans. Prizes and party bags: Give away recycled stationery, sock puppets, fancy rubbish bins, scarves made from secondhand clothes. Costumes: Ask guests to dress creatively, using old junk in a new way. Decorations: Cover the party table with newspaper. Serve drinks in a variety of clean plastic bottles. Serve food on cleaned foil or polystyrene trays. Make a centrepiece out of old clean socks turned into puppets. Place “recycle” stickers around the room. Games: • Cut off the tops of plastic milk bottles, leaving the handles intact and give to each guest. Have the kids toss a tennis ball back and forth between the scoops. • Make candle holders. Clean small cans, paint or cover them with colourful paper and fill with pieces of broken candles. Add new wicks and you have new recycled candles! • Make sock puppets with old socks.
