Everyday Life Beat Weekend Boredom with a Boat If you’re looking for something fun to do outdoors with the family on weekends, but haven’t much experience on the water, then an entry level Bow Rider is for you. This 17 Footer with a 115 horse power engine is ideal on dams (not the ocean) and can go up to speeds of 70 or 80km/h (but feels like you’re travelling at 100km/h). The boat can be used for waterskiing, wakeboarding, tubing or fishing, so really is a family-orientated vessel. It comes complete with all the safety equipment – life jackets, First Aid kit, paddles, red flags etc. You will need a 2x4 or 4x4 vehicle to tow the Bow Rider (which comes with a trailer, covers, motor covers and sun canopies). The boat is small enough to keep in your garage at home. Remember that you’ll need a Skipper’s Ticket to purchase a boat. You can do this licence in about four to six weeks. To find out more about the Bow Rider or about the Skipper’s Ticket contact Honda Marine.

Laidback Life April Book Reviews by Books & Books ADULT FICTION • Heartbreak Hotel by Deborah Moggach: From the author of The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel comes this fabulous comedy. Buffy, erstwhile thespian and thrice-married B&B owner, hits on an idea: to get people to stay at his establishment and learn DIY courses while unknowingly fixing his run-down establishment. A raggle-taggle group of singletons and divorcees seek solace and late-flowering love in the Knockton countryside where hilarity ensues. • The Accidental Apprentice by Vikas Swarup: From the author of the book behind the blockbuster movie Slumdog Millionaire this is a brilliant novel about how life can change in an instant. Sapna Sinha works in an electronics store in downtown Delhi. She hates her job but without it she knows her family won’t survive. As she leaves the shop one day, she is approached by a man who claims to be the CEO of one of India’s biggest companies. He tells her he is looking for an heiress to his business empire and has decided it should be her. There are, however, just seven tests she must pass. That was the moment her life changed … • Forgive Me by Lesley Pearse: When Eva Patterson returns home from work one day she finds her mother, Flora, dead in the bath. Beside her is a note saying: “Forgive Me”. Eva always believed her family life was safe, steady and comfortable until her mother’s suicide. In her will Flora left Eva a studio in London where she’s shocked to discover that her mother was once a successful artist in the 1960s. A chance encounter leads her to Phil, who agrees to help her restore the studio where she finds Flora’s old diaries. Searching for answers, Eva meets a psychic who warns her of a shocking crime in Flora’s past. This is a compelling story of a daughter uncovering her mother’s secret past. TEEN FICTION • Raining Fire by Alan Gibbons: Alex and Ethan are brothers growing up where there are just two choices – sport or crime. Ethan is a promising footballer and when he is selected to go on a training programme he feels sure that he has found his chance to escape the gangs which dominate the streets, that is until life spirals out of control for Alex and things take a turn for the worse for Ethan. Ethan finds himself drawn into the midst of an explosive feud with a gun at its heart. The gun can make a weak man strong, be a coward’s fist or the beholder of power. In this tense, gripping and absorbing real life thriller, Alan Gibbons explores the complex issue of gun crime, and the far-reaching consequences it can have. Join us for our 7th birthday on Sat 6th April at 10am for a fun-filled magical celebration! Rico the clown will be there to entertain! Source: Books & Books, 031 - 563 6288, shop@booksandbooks.co.za. Mentat Improve Your Mental Focus Whether at work or learning for an exam, having a focused mind, good memory and thinking ability, are a must. Quick Tips to Improve Your Mental Focus: • Healthy Diet – Some unhealthy foods and beverages such as carbonated drinks, caffeine, sugar, alcohol, white flour, fatty and fried foods, are known to decrease a person’s thinking ability. So, such foods should be completely eliminated from the diet. • Daily include foods that boost memory: • Fish, oysters and other seafood (these contain vitamin B and zinc). • Eggs, peanuts, soybean products and liver. • Fruits, vegetables and nuts – these are some of the healthiest foods and as much as possible, a person’s diet should be made from them. • Vitamin C and E, Selenium, L-Glutamine, Bacopa monnieri, Gotu Kola, Ashwagandha and Ginkgo Biloba are also important. • Eat breakfast daily, and snack on fruits, nuts or low-fat yoghurt twice a day. • Stress Management – It is very important to have adequate sleep at night and rests/breaks during the day. Meditation and breathing exercises can also help to check stress and anxiety build up. • Regular Exercise – When a person undertakes exercise, the blood circulation in the body improves, resulting in optimum supply of oxygen to various organs of the body, including the brain. Walking, aerobics, swimming, jogging, playing any sports and Yoga can improve mental focus and alertness. • Positive Attitude – Goes a long way in keeping mood disorders in check and maintaining mental focus. • Remove Distractions – If you have a particular task at hand, remove all hindrances and distractions that come in the way of completing it. Break the whole task into smaller ones and then do one thing at a time. Do the important tasks first. Source: Pharmed Pharmaceuticals, 031 – 571 2800.

Everyday Life ETHNICKS ETHNICKS in Hillcrest was originally started in 1998 by interior-designer, Nicky Hughes. Fifteen years later the shop, now owned by Nicky’s parents Carole and Sydney, stocks a wide range of traditional beaded goods, supplies many other stores around the country and overseas and has opened an additional shop in Durban North. Carole said, “We’ve been going for 15 years now at The Heritage Market so we would like to thank the Hillcrest and Durban North communities, our many customers from all over South Africa, our loyal staff and very specially our extremely talented crafters for supporting and being with us over all this time.” ETHNICKS manufactures and sells an extensive range of beaded goods and crafts including household, jewellery, gifts, Christmas items and wirework. Other items are paper goods, natural seed creations, recycled tin cans and much more. From the year 2000, rural women mainly from The Valley of 1000 Hills locality have been responsible for the myriad beading goods sold through ETHNICKS. The women are often the sole providers for their children as well as numerous unemployed family members. The women are guided by Carole as to colours that experience has shown will appeal to customers and which are in line with current trends of local and international fashion. ETHNICKS provides their bead-workers with the base products that are known to be popular, to cover in beadwork. This also ensures strict quality control over the goods being offered to customers.
Our retail outlets are jam-packed with the most comprehensive range of contemporary & traditional beadwork items in KwaZulu-Natal as well as a large range of curios & handmade crafts suited to locals and foreign tourists. When a woman has a protection order and warrant of arrest and goes to SAPS to have the abuser arrested she is required by them to go before a magistrate to sign an affidavit. One in three men ADMIT to rape! One in seven men ADMIT to gang rape! What’s that about?
Did you know?: • The law provides that a maintenance order can be made against the grandparents of a minor child. • If you have minor children living with you and you change the child’s physical residential address without notifying your ex-spouse, it is a criminal offence. • It is a criminal offence for your minor children from your previous marriage to call your new spouse “mommy” or “daddy”. • Did you know that even if you have a Protection Order in place, you must still appear in front of a magistrate prior to asking the police to execute a warrant of arrest in the event of breach of such order?

HDI Financial Services Gap Cover Did you know that almost every medical aid scheme imposes limits on reimbursement rates for Specialists treating you for in-hospital procedures? How do you pay for this? And, when your scheme insists you share in the cost of diagnostic procedures, are you prepared? Those who have been unfortunate enough to experience these financial shortfalls will know that Gap Cover is a necessity not a luxury. The most common gaps identified are: • Tariff gap – where your Scheme reimburses your Specialists less than they charge for their services. • Co-payment Gap – where your Scheme insists you pay an “excess” for expensive diagnostic procedures like MRI/ CT Scans, Endoscopes and a range of specialised operations. • Cancer Gap – some schemes will extend your oncology benefit provided you can afford to co-pay 20% of the treatment beyond a predetermined threshold. In all these instances, the member remains liable for any shortfalls implicit in the Scheme rules. This can run into tens of thousands of Rands. In response to this growing need there has been an increase in Gap Cover providers marketing solutions to medical aid members. Because the devil is in the detail it is advisable to consult an accredited advisor to establish (a) how long the provider has been in operation, (b) who will ultimately pay your claim, and (c) the waiting periods and exclusions that will invariably apply. Visit www.getgapcover.co.za for more info. Source: Darren Polzi and Jonathan Dunwoody, HDI Financial Services, 031 - 563 1259.

Delicious Life Havana Grill
For mains I chose the Jalapeno & Feta Stuffed Fillet wrapped in bacon with tomato salsa and cheese sauce. Need I say more! The fillet was cooked exactly as I requested and was tender and juicy. The jalapenos gave it a bit of a kick but this was quickly tamed by the cheese sauce. The onion rings came with a chillibite type batter which I found rather unique and quite scrumptious. Mediterranean veggies included sweet cinnamon butternut and brinjal, a personal favourite. My companion chose Fillet on the Bone (500g) served with mash, wilted spinach, red wine & pearl onion sauce (see photo). Again, this was cooked exactly as requested and definitely filled the gap!

I believe busy restaurants are so because they serve GOOD food, and that’s exactly what I observed recently at Havana Grill at Suncoast Casino, Hotel & Entertainment World. This stylish restaurant was buzzing with happy diners and every dish I glimpsed looked delicious! The menu is quite extensive and every palate will find something to savour. For starters I tried the Deconstructed Prawn Samoosa which was served as a stack of pastry filled with a tomato salsa, a generous amount of prawns and was circled rather creatively with sweet soy sauce. My dining companion chose fried calamari which was beautifully prepared and came with a very yummy Tartar-like sauce.

Home Life Plug into the Sun for all Your Hot Water Needs!
Visit our website for great Easter Specials!
Living in sunny South Africa to most families is simply fun in the sun. Most of us spend many hours in the sun monthly, using block-out creams to resist those harmful rays. Isn’t it about time we made use of those harmful rays – to heat our water? Solar Heating Systems use the free energy of the sun and cost very little to maintain. This helps to reduce ever-increasing household electricity costs and helps protect the environment since solar heating systems are clean and non-polluting. For hot water geyser solar heating, a flat plate solar collector is mounted on the roof and connected to your existing Kwikot or equivalent hot water geyser. The water is circulated through the flat plate solar collector using a 12 volt pump and photovoltaic (PV) panel to power the pump. As soon as there is sun on the PV panel the pump begins to circulate the geyser water through the flat plate solar collector. No timers are required. The existing heater element is used as a back-up should there be no or little sun for a few days continually. Existing hot water geysers can be converted to solar for as little as R7500. The monthly savings on a 150L geyser would be between R350-R500 depending on your hot water needs.

Home Life How to Pick the Perfect Mattress Getting a good night’s sleep is an important aspect of maintaining your general wellbeing, and your choice of mattress is the first building block to ensuring a restful slumber. However, with the dizzying array of mattresses currently on the market, choosing the best one for your individual needs can become a bit overwhelming. How do you know it is time to replace your mattress? Depending on the quality and make of the mattress, the general consensus is that mattresses boast a lifespan of around nine years. Over time, mattresses also tend to collect dust mites, fungus and other germs, which can exacerbate allergies and impact negatively on your sleeping patterns. Gauge the right tension. Says Anton Odendaal of Rochester: “It is essential that the mattress you choose is just the right firmness for your needs. If the mattress is too hard and you lie on your side, your shoulder and hips cannot sink into the mattress. They will then automatically compensate by curving towards each other, leading to a stressed spine. A good firm mattress should offer firm support, without putting pressure on your various pressure points. If the mattress is too soft, your body will sink into it hammock-style, causing the shoulders and hips to pinch in, which in turn will lead to the spine curving – putting undue pressure on joints and muscles.” He notes that the position that you sleep in will influence the rigidity of the mattress you choose: “Those who sleep on their sides often prefer more cushioning since their weight is being supported by a smaller surface area of the body. Those who sleep on their stomachs usually prefer a firmer mattress, while back sleepers tend to fall somewhere in the middle.” Source: Rochester, www.rochester.co.za.

Home Life The Best Time to Plant March going into April is undoubtedly the best time in the garden and the weather is good for planting and planning colour for winter and spring. The first pansy seedlings are available in nurseries and should be planted when the weather is cool. Poppies and foxgloves can be sown now for flowering in late winter and spring – these are ideal for that splash of colour we crave in our gardens. Plan to have some primulas in your garden for winter colour, but don’t plant them yet, they need the cooler weather to thrive. Don’t forget to buy your bulbs now and store them in the veggie compartment of your fridge until ready to plant – each variety will be planted at different times so check the packets for planting instructions. Bulbs sell out quickly, so get in first or you may have a limited selection to choose from. You can begin planting some of the varieties in mid-April. Lawns will do very well with a last feeding of fertilizer like 7:1:3 before the tiny plants slow down for the winter. This will ensure that when the growing season begins again the lawn will have a good start and stronger roots. This is also the ideal time of year to transplant trees, shrubs and roses that are no longer in the correct place, or to plant shrubs and trees to give them a good start and let them settle in over winter. There are also plenty of veggies to plant at this time of the year including cabbages, carrots, celery, leeks, lettuce, onions, peas, spinach, beetroot and broad beans. All in all a very good time to be in the garden doing the things we love – planting! Source: Tanya Visser, The Gardener Magazine, www.thegardener.co.za.

Healthy Life Fitness 101: Pilates What is Pilates? The Pilates method of body conditioning is a unique system of stretching and strengthening exercises developed over 90 years ago by Joseph H. Pilates. It strengthens and tones muscles, improves posture, provides flexibility and balance and creates a more streamlined shape. Almost anyone can use the Pilates system with relative ease. However, people who have had rods put in their backs and the very frail should not do Pilates. Always seek the advice of your doctor before committing to a new exercise programme. Fun: Find a vibrant and knowledgeable instructor. An instructor who repeats exercise sets to fill up class time is not going to create a positive vibe. Difficulty: Classes range from beginners to advanced, so ensure you join the correct class. Calories burnt: The number of calories you burn depends on the length of the class and intensity level. During a onehour Pilates classes, Health Status calculates that a 70kg person burns about 252 calories in a beginning workout, 351 calories in an intermediate class and 432 calories in an advanced workout. Muscles most utilised: Pilates is a full body workout. You will not miss a muscle during workouts. I can make special mention of the abs, glutes, hamstrings, hips, back and shoulders. Where to find a Pilates studio? Quality and experience is what counts in Pilates. The BASI form of Pilates is the highest internationally recognised Pilates styles and it only accepts the best to become instructors. Healthy Life Skin Doctor Q&A Q: I have a dark mole on my back. How do I know if it is cancerous? Julie A: Moles on the skin may be benign (harmless) or malignant. It is important to understand that although cancer may arise in a pre-existing mole, it can also occur de novo (from new). It can also occur at any age including childhood. Moles that need to be assessed are those that change according to the ABCDE criteria. A = Asymmetry – A mole that is not a perfectly round shape. B = Border – A mole that has an irregular border. C = Colour – A mole that changed colour or has multiple colours like blue, black, red. D = Diameter – A mole that is larger than 6mm (the size of a pencil eraser) in size. E = Extra changes i.e. painful, bleeding, itchy and elevated moles.
Lisa King
These moles need to be assessed using mole mapping and if suspicious, will need to be removed for testing. For more advice and tips on skin cancer awareness and mole mapping, please visit www.skindoctor.co.za.

Healthy Life Tennis Tuition Get fit without the monotony of the gym. Lose weight while having fun, meet people and play a game of a lifetime. Start tennis today! Age is no excuse. Says tennis teacher, Karin Boshoff, people are now playing well into their 80s and there is even a 90s to 100s age group in the World Veterans Championships! Tennis is both a physical and mental sport, so training involves teaching both these aspects. You can even travel the world and meet many people playing tennis. Karin was a former world-ranked player in her day so knows the ropes of competing at world-class level. Karin does adult coaching lessons for individuals and groups, catering for beginners right up to advanced. She teaches at the Durban North Tennis Club and at Durban Girls’ High (Glenwood), Monday to Saturday. Karin’s students comprise ladies and gents who want to learn for different reasons. Some ladies have played before starting families, others want to improve in order to be accepted at club or league level. Some join to get fit or to meet other people. Tennis is a social sport and Karin has organised social tennis on Friday afternoons 4pm to 6pm. For serious students, once they have reached a certain level, Karin enters them in the bottom KZN league to play in a team of six players against other clubs. She also trains for tournaments both local and abroad and has connections in the USA for those looking for tennis scholarships. Many of her male students already have a high standard and simply wish to improve. Tennis is a very technical game and having professional coaching helps players to achieve a higher standard of play. Learn correct techniques and gain confidence. Sign up for tennis lessons today! Contact: Karin, 083 396 4051, casey@sai.co.za.

Beautiful Life Pure Pampering Products Give your skin the treat of its life with these two gorgeous products: Miracle Oil and Save My Skin Oil. Miracle Oil is a miracle treatment for dry skin, dry cuticles and more! The oil’s naturally sourced formula leaves skin moisturised and looking beautiful. Blended with nine essential oils, including Hemp Seed Oil and Tea Tree Oil, it keeps skin looking its healthiest. A true miracle! Simply apply a small amount of Miracle Oil to the area to be treated. Squeezing the tip of the dropper may not be necessary – holding the dropper over the area and letting the oil fall from the tip will be more than enough. For something different add a couple of drops to shampoo/conditioner to hydrate scalp. This non-greasy oil is also an anti-ageing formula and can smooth the appearance of wrinkles. Cost: R210 for 30ml. For something more specific try Save My Skin Oil, a nutrient-rich oil that helps reduce the appearance of stretch marks. This moisturising, nourishing oil is a must-have for the mom to be! Simply apply morning and evening, rubbing the skin in circular motions. Cost: R260 for 120ml. Mum’ss Mail 100th Issue Mum Mum’ I would like to commend the whole Mum’s Mail team for ensuring contact with advertisers is constant and for treating us like valued contributors to your “little toolbox” rather than simply account payers/a number, for reminding us about deadlines, that I know I personally would miss and for keeping the mag and additional offerings fresh, vibey and informative. Gillian, Rising Star Academy. Why do I really like Mum’s Mail? Is it because they are so nice to deal with? Is it because you get value for money? Is it because they are always very obliging and supportive of charities and are always helpful? Well, yes all of the above, but most of all I enjoy phoning them when I am really down and listening to their answering machine. It brightens up my day. Joan Chalmers.

Tiny Life Types of Infant Formula Breastfeeding is the best source of nutrition for babies. Exclusive breastfeeding is recommended for the first six months. In exceptional circumstances breastfeeding may not be possible – infant formula is a breastmilk substitute. All infant formulas must contain sufficient quantities of basic nutrients to meet international standards. The four basic components of formula are carbohydrates (lactose, corn syrup solids, maltodextrin, and sucrose), protein (whey or casein), fat, electrolytes/ minerals. Starter formulas are used from birth to six months. The ratio of whey to casein in starter formulas is similar to that of human milk (60:40). Whey is more easily digested by young infants. Followon formula is used from six months to 12 months and should never be used for babies under six months.

Follow-on formula contains more iron, sucrose, glucose and other non–milk sugars and fewer minerals than starter formula. From one year old children can be given ordinary (full fat) cow’s milk. Soy-based infant formula is recommended for babies with allergies to cow’s milk protein. Hypoallergic formula contains modified protein, and was developed for babies with intolerance to cow’s milk or soy based infant formula. There are three different types of hypoallergic formula. Infants with lactose intolerance may use lactose-free or soy-based formula. Antireflux formulas are thickened with starch to minimise the possibility of reflux. Acidified formulas inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria in prepared feeds. It is recommended for children with mild digestive problems or for use in areas with suboptimal hygiene. Special formulas are available for preterm and low birth weight infants. Consult with a healthcare provider before choosing a formula. Tiny Life Hair Caps for Babies & Toddlers Michelle Hon started her Hair Caps for Babies & Toddlers business in June 2012. When she searched for but couldn’t find anything like it for her two year old, Michelle was inspired to make her own caps. The Hair Caps now come in lots of bright colours, with ears or without and are suitable for girls or boys. The hand- or machine-washable, quick-drying caps come in three sizes – small (44cm), medium (52cm) and large (60cm). They are ideal for winter bath days when kiddies would like to spend more time in the bath without getting cold. The caps keep their heads warm and do a little towel drying as well after a hair wash. The Hair Cap is also great for after swimming. If swim caps are not required during lessons, simply pop the Hair Cap on after a swim to keep youngsters’ hair out of their faces. Once again, they can be used for towel drying the hair as well.

Young Life Doodle Dolls
DOLPHINATICS Swimming Academy
Stacey has always loved crafting and when her job in the corporate world ended, she branched out and started her new company, The Love Bucket. Initially aimed at weddings and special events, The Love Buckets’ products evolved and now include Doodle Dolls. Doodle Dolls began life when Stacey, who often made cute creatures out of felt for children of friends and family, saw a drawing that her cousin’s child had done. She designed and sewed a doll based on the drawing. When she asked for more drawings, Stacey quickly realised that her imagination was nothing compared to that of a four year old!

Doodle Dolls are made in two sizes (medium 20cm and large 30cm) from felt, with accessories of ric rac, buttons and ribbons etc. Each doll is hand stitched with love and care. As the business grew Stacey looked to outsource the sewing. Wanting to do good in the community, she identified a local Gogo, Beatrice, who now does the stitching of all the dolls. Beatrice looks after her two grandchildren on her domestic worker salary and uses the extra money to buy her grandchildren school uniforms. Stacey still cuts each and every pattern to ensure that each doll meets the Doodle Dolls quality and promise. Young Life The Other Side of the Internet
1000 Animals / Birds!
The Internet can truly be called “the information super-highway”. However, it has also opened up, at the click of a button, easy access to cyber bullying, pornography, cyber stalking and child predators. As adults, we tend almost to rely on our own ignorance of the Internet in the belief that, as our children “know more about computers and cell phones” they will be safe. [But], I believe, based on the numerous cases that I have dealt with, that the Internet can be seen as the new frontier in crime, especially against children. [As parents we need to help and protect our children].

Some statistics: • About 1 in 7 children have been sexually solicited online. • Most parents don’t allow their children to give out personal information online yet just under half of 9-19 year olds who go online once per week say that they have given out personal information to someone they have ONLY met on the Internet. • 44% of children have lied about their age when online. • 75% had been contacted by a stranger; 37% of those contacted responded out of curiosity. • Only 4% told someone older that they trusted, such as a parent/teacher. • 39% of children aged 14-18 look at websites/games that their parents would likely disapprove of. • 67% clear out their browser history to ensure parents can’t view their online activity. As parents and citizens, our goal should be to educate, equip and empower ourselves in making a firm commitment to familiarise ourselves with the technology surrounding our children daily, so that we may become informed about the clear and present dangers of the uninhibited access and use of these systems. Young Life E.Q. Classes for Children & Teens Do you feel in charge of your feelings, or does it sometimes seem like they’re in charge of you? Are there some feelings that are easier for you to understand, but others that are more confusing? “Emotional Intelligence” means being smart with feelings. Emotional Intelligence allows us to make good decisions and work well with others. It has been shown to impact on relationship quality, personal achievement, good health, life satisfaction and self-efficacy. Candice Smith runs Emotional Learning courses for children and teens at the Belaire Suites Hotel in Durban on Mondays during term time. Classes for age eight+ are 3.45pm to 4.45pm. Classes for teens are 5pm to 6pm. The E.Q. classes deal with gaining greater insight into a core part of our humanity. “I have found with Emotional Intelligence I am able to make choices that serve my life and my relationships better. I find my thinking, feelings and actions are less of a mystery to me. I wish I’d learnt this when I was younger,” said Candice. What happens in the classes? The classes work with a process called “Self-Science”, a programme developed by Six Seconds. It is called Self-Science because students use the skills of a scientist to learn about themselves. A scientist notices – with curiosity. The scientist’s most powerful tool is the question: “I wonder...” Join Candice and learn to be smarter about feelings, and how to make positive choices. Classes start on 15 April. Contact: Candice Smith, 076 763 6433, candice@eqevolution.co.za, www.eqevolution.co.za. WIN WIN WIN Mum’s Mail has 1 Term of E.Q. Young Life The World’s Coolest Fitness Gadget Ideal for sports like golf, tennis, squash, rugby, cricket, swimming and activities demanding power in arms, hands and wrists, NSD Powerball is the world’s coolest fitness gadget. Even musicians benefit from the increased strength and dexterity that an NSD Powerball will give them! • How it works: The size of a tennis ball and weighing about 250g, this unique gyro can spin at an incredible 15,000rpm and generate over 40lbs of force – all of which is applied to the fingers, hands, wrists and arms of the user. No matter how fit or strong you are, using the ball for just five to ten minutes each day will guarantee a substantial strength increase in the full muscle groups of the lower arm and wrist, within a very short time frame. • The fun side: You can have hours of fun trying to beat friends’ high scores thanks to the onboard computer/rev. counter! • The gentle side: As a “non impact” strengthening device, which exercises every muscle group in the forearm, NSD Powerball has been medically recommended as an ideal instrument by which to rehabilitate an injury to the hand, wrist, forearm or elbow. It works isometrically to gently stress the damaged area in a perfectly smooth, even manner which cannot be replicated by normal exercise, therefore lending itself to the gentle rehabilitation of Repetitive Stress injuries, Carpal Tunnel symptoms and Arthritic conditions. Try the NSD Powerball yourself – it really works. Contact: 031 – 202 4231, southafrica@powerballs.com, www.nsdpowerballs.com/za. Educated Life Little Noddy: A Learning Environment Little Noddy, an established pre-school in Durban, has two campuses – one in Berea and one in Glenwood. Both branches carry the bright and cheerful look of the well-known character “Little Noddy”, as well as the same ethos i.e. that children are provided with a safe environment in which to develop physically, emotionally and socially. One of the aspects that help children develop is in the area of extramurals. Though, cautions Principal Priscilla Pearson, parents should ensure their children are not overscheduled and have enough time just to play and have fun. Having said that, Little Noddy does offer the following extramurals: • Action Ball – Benefits of this activity include children learning ball skills, balance, catching, bouncing, eye-hand coordination and large motor skills. • Soccer – At pre-primary level, teaching focuses on soccer skills, such as dribbling and controlling the ball. • Swimming – Important for children’s safety, for this activity, children enrolled in lessons via Little Noddy are collected in a bus and taken to reputable swimming schools. • Speech & Drama – Helpful for developing language and self-confidence in young children, this extramural can help children who have a lisp or stutter, assists all children to pronounce words correctly and express themselves in a controlled and confident manner. • Ballet – Ever popular, this classic extramural is for children aged three years and up. • Catrobats (Catrobatkidz) – Is aimed at children aged two to nine years, helping children during these fundamental years to develop skills that will provide a solid foundation for physical and mental achievement. Children learn balance, locomotion, gross and fine motor skills, spatial relationships, co-ordination, rhythm and timing, strength and flexibility. Educated Life How to Get your Child to Co-Operate? Getting your child to co-operate is not about shouting, repeating yourself, bribing or nagging. It’s about setting expectations, thinking one step ahead and teaching children about consequences. To illustrate this point here are few examples of going shopping. You can choose simply by stating your expectations whether your shopping experience with your children will be a pleasurable one or a nightmare. Let them know before you even enter the shops what is expected of them: “When we go into the shops, I expect you to walk next to the trolley and help me put the groceries inside, without asking for everything you see…” Not only do you need to be clear on your boundaries you also need to express strong disapproval when necessary. “I really don’t like what’s happening here! It disturbs other shoppers when children run up and down the aisles shouting and screaming.” Show the child how to make amends: “You can make up for running around by helping me carry bags to the car.” Allow children to experience the consequences of their actions, it is very important.

Send your stories photos to editor@mumsmail.com child to comply is to describe rather than and and it may get published on our to nag, for example: “I noticed the fridge website blog for free! door is open.” Removing personalisation works wonders, try it! Instead of shouting about the dirty clothes lying on the floor, rather give information: “Dirty clothes belong in the laundry basket.” It works wonders for the nerves…

Educated Life School Steroid Use
Carebears
2013 is already in full swing, and it promises to be an exciting and ground-breaking year for the Discovery SharkSmart programme. It is also the year that the programme celebrates its 10th anniversary! Discovery SharkSmart is thrilled to have 21 schools involved in the programme this year. The big news this year is the advent of steroids testing in the Discovery SharkSmart high schools by the S.A. Institute for Drug Free Sport (SAIDS). This is a world-first pilot project that is being closely monitored and supported by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and SharkSmart expects full co-operation and support from all their high schools in KZN. Testing will be based on reasonable suspicion i.e. the educators need to identify students who they think are using steroids and be able to justify their decision. Indicators of steroid use include the increase in physical size, a sudden weight and muscle gain, acne and abnormally greasy hair. The physical health risks of steroid use are well known and include cardiac problems, strokes, various cancers, testicular atrophy, and high blood pressure, amongst many other side effects. The psychological side effects are also well documented, the most common being increased aggression (so-called ‘roid rages) and anti-social behaviour. Often teachers will suspect steroid use in an adolescent just from their change in behaviour in the classroom.

Educated Life Annie’s Buzy Beez Celebrates 10 Years Annie’s Buzy Beez, a Baby Care Centre and Pre-School in Durban North, celebrates its 10th anniversary this year. Although the official date of 8 January has passed, the school is still looking forward to its party – a fête planned for 25 May. This fun fair/ carnival promises to be loads of fun so keep an eye on the press for details. Annie Moodie had wanted to be a teacher since she was a little girl. She left Johannesburg to study teaching in Durban, met her husband here and stayed in KZN. After working for a Pre-School for five years, Annie and her husband converted a portion of their home and opened Annie’s Buzy Beez with 20 children. In 2005 Annie’s eldest daughter was born so Annie added a baby room to the Pre-School. This section now caters for 12 babies at a time with a 5 Star waiting list that stretches to 2015. When they leave to go to Grade 1 it’s quite emotional.” Apart from developing caring relationships with the children, this outgoing, lively school also values its association with the parents. “We want to continue this loving environment and keep on building friendships with the children’s parents,” said Annie of her future hopes. Educated Life Rhythmic Gymnastics Rhythmic Gymnastics is an Olympic Sport that combines elements of dance, ballet and gymnastics, and is performed by manipulating hand apparatus: rope, hoop, ball, clubs and ribbon. Only women compete in Rhythmic Gymnastics although in Japan and some other countries, men participate in a similar version of the sport. Rhythmic Gymnastics is extremely beneficial for all children. Gymnasts must control both their body and the apparatus at the same time, teaching them co-ordination as well as developing spatial awareness. Proficiency in spatial awareness will affect overall motor skills in a child and is therefore extremely important. Rhythmic Gymnastics develops strength and flexibility. As strong muscles are built, so in turn will the strength of the bones increase and this decreases the likelihood of developing osteoporosis. Because of the multifunctional movements gymnasts’ bodies must perform, gymnastics creates long and supple muscles. The flexibility gained here will help with all basic daily activities even sitting, standing and bending. In order to be proficient in Rhythmic Gymnastics, a great deal of discipline and commitment is required of each gymnast. Instilling these life skills of discipline and commitment in a child will help them in all future endeavours. As with all physical activity, Rhythmic Gymnastics improves self-confidence. Rhythmic Gymnastics is the most elegant and graceful of the Gymnastics disciplines and promotes these characteristics. KZN has several large Rhythmic Gymnastics Clubs and is highly competitive within South Africa. For more information contact: Robyn Baker, robynbaker@mweb.co.za, 083 778 1607.

Party Life Easter Crafts with Washi Tape Washi Tape – beautifully coloured/patterned sticky tape – is not just for gift wrapping. Use Washi tape this Easter and get the kids involved decorating eggs to add some colour to the occasion. • Use the tape as is to cover eggs, or cut the tape into small squares and triangles to give a woven effect. • If you are feeling particularly crafty use your decorated eggs to make an Easter wreath for your front door and be the envy of your neighbours. • Cut egg shapes out of cardboard and layer the Washi tape in different colours to make Easter cards for family and friends. Raise the egg off the card with double sided tape to give a 3D look.

Party Life Party Venues: Tweens/Teens
Foam & Inflatable Fun
Mum’s Mail reader, Heidi Ferreira, feels there is a huge gap in the Durban North area for party venues for tweens/teens. “It’s just so frustrating that children from 13 don’t have any venues to celebrate their birthdays and most party planners don’t cater for them besides pamper parties etc. When are the northern suburbs of Durban going to create safe places for tweens/teens to socialise and be partially supervised – besides malls and movies?” she said. Younger children seem to be well catered for. Two Mum’s Mail readers recommended the following: • Mavourneen Carter recommended Golden Hours Party Hut as a children’s birthday party venue. “I just had the experience of celebrating my third grandchild’s first birthday party at the Golden Hours Party Hut. What an absolute pleasure. There is a lovely hut, playground area, chairs, tables, cleaning staff and braai facilities. Contact Lyn Wilson, 083 262 3693.” • Elzet recommended Akimbo Kids in Drummond, Upper Highway. “Akimbo Kids has an indoor and outdoor coffee shop and play area plus holiday activities. Visit www.akimbo. co.za.” But what about the tweens? Here are some suggestions: • The Beach (or Lifesavers Clubs for disco parties – this would require no liquor licence). • Durban Ice Rink (031 – 332 4597). • Crusaders Sports Complex (Janine Brown, 082 826 9714). • The Barnyard Theatre (031 – 566 3045). • Cooking Parties (Cooking Cooks, 031 - 266 8488) • Craft Parties (Mosaics at your venue – 083 782 7810). • Paintball (076 444 5570). • Wavehouse (031 – 584 9400). Readers – do you have other suggestions for party venues for tweens/teens in the northern suburbs of Durban (excluding malls and movies)? Send your responses to brenda@mumsmail.com. www.mumsmail.com

MOSAICS
The idea for Jezreel originated from an experience Mari Murray had when counselling at her church one dusty, windy afternoon. “A car came racing into the church yard,” explained Mari. “A woman got out and knocked on the door. When I opened, she asked me whether there was a quiet corner where she could sit. She was visibly distressed and I knew she needed time to collect herself. I showed her in and left her alone, praying for her while I carried on counselling. After a while she came to me and told me that that quiet space had prevented her from committing suicide.” Jezreel means “God will sow”.

Mum’s Mail & the Glenview Guest House present on 19 April at 14:30 a wine-tasting of Chenin Blanc wines. This cultivar that is the most planted in South Africa, was in the past underestimated, but over the last number of years there are truly magnificent whites emerging. Bruwer Raats, winemaker of Stellenbosch, will on behalf of the Chenin Blanc Producers Association conduct the wine-tasting. We can accomodate 60 guests and the fee of R80 includes a Danish smorgasbord. Proceeds will go towards HOLAH (previously known as the Durban North Baby House). Places can be reserved by contacting Elsabe on 083 3994784 or events@glenviewguesthouse.co.za. The event will take place at the Glenview Guest House in Glen Hills.

Relaxed Life Brunch with Bobbert
&
Join celebrity actress Lisa Bobbert for brunch – and help those in need. Lisa Bobbert, one of Durban’s most loved and versatile stage personalities, will host a special networking function for women entitled Brunch with Bobbert, at Durban Country Club on Friday 19 April, 8am to 11am. The event will be held in support of the popular actress’ Joy Project initiative, an NPO formed to raise funds for poverty-stricken orphans, widows and other causes in dire need of support. The multi-award-winning celebrity actress says she loves this platform which offers her the opportunity to reach out to people in need, and to make a difference in their lives. To this end, Bobbert has developed a presentation entitled “I am not OK and you are not OK and that’s OK”. “I talk about coping with life and how to navigate some of life’s challenges. I also remind people that the Hollywood role model of us all perfectly multi-tasking is not realistic. How can we begin to achieve that? Personally, I would love to kill Superwomen. She has a lot to answer for!” To date, funds raised through Lisa Bobbert’s Joy Project have helped put two young people from a children’s home in Jozini, in northern Zululand, through university, as well as helping other poverty stricken orphans and widows financially. Lisa Bobbert’s brunch on 19 April will include her “Killing the Superwoman” address and will offer women the chance to network. There will be prizes, lucky draws, giveaways and goodie bags. Tickets: R275. Bookings: clare@pinkinkproductions.co.za, 071 224 1046.

Relaxed Life Fun and Health in One Place There’s something for everybody at Moses Mabhida Stadium! If you’re looking to entertain yourself or the whole family these Easter holidays, the Stadium has you covered! Whether you’re looking for a healthy bite to eat or a fun family outing, the People’s Park Café is fast becoming the favourite choice for both. Located in the People’s Park, the café offers a health-conscious menu with great tasting food. It has been especially popular due to the children’s play park next to the café designed to excite and entertain kids of all ages, while the grown-ups can have a chance to relax and catch up over a cup of coffee. The Café is centrally located and within walking distance of the newly upgraded promenade as well as many other fun activities, like a trip in the SkyCar to experience breathtaking views of all Durban’s landmarks. If you’re feeling a bit more adventurous why not take the plunge and feel the rush with the Big Swing? Or take in the atmosphere of the stadium hotspots with the Segway Gliding Tours and a knowledgeable guide who will give you interesting facts about Moses Mabhida Stadium and the city of Durban.

Established in 2003, Mum’s Mail has become one of the most indispensable resources for parents, grandparents, teachers, business owners and other interested readers in Durban and surrounding areas, as well as Pietermaritzburg/Midlands. The targeted, specific distribution (LSM 7 – 10) of our free, full colour monthly magazine to créches, pre-schools, primary schools, shopping malls, family and baby clinics, doctors’ rooms, public libraries and selected retail outlets, ensures that your product or service reaches the right market, on time, every time. Mum’s Mail has proven time and again that it has an exceptional shelf life, which is partly due to its practical, A5 format – it’s the ideal size to pop into your handbag or cubby hole. It really is Life’s Little Toolbox!
