Reader’s Life • Thanks to the Mum’s Mail team for the awesome work you have put into your magazine. I picked up a copy from my local mall and found it to be most informative and helpful especially for my sister who is a mother to a two year old. Please keep up the good work, it is much appreciated. Zain Haasbroek. • I just wanted to thank you for your integrity and response to the suggestion to mention the “Every Parent’s Nightmare” book. I love to see people doing what they say they will and supporting other people - and children - in the process. Colette. • How exciting! You managed to use the article about the Luthuli Museum in your June edition. I am so grateful. Thank you so much. It is magazines such as your own and the attitude you display that makes you special. Heidi Gibson. • Thank you so much for the great reviews on your culinary team-building event at Cooking Cooks. You guys make an awesome team. I was thrilled to have had the Mum’s Mail team cooking up culinary creations in our studio. Debbie Solomon. • We have had quite a few enquiries via Mum’s Mail for our various KBN breakfast meetings, and wanted to say a big THANK YOU for advertising our KBN meetings. Tracey Olivier & Belinda Peck. • Thank you so much for your generous support of the Robin Hood Foundation. Every time you place an advert for us, your kind readers immediately contact us and donate their second-hand baby clothes. We really value your support and appreciate the kindness of your readers. Laid Back Life August Book & DVD Reviews FOR CHILDREN: BOOKS: • Switched (for teens). I recently read this interesting new novel by Amanda Hocking. It is an easy read but with some “mature” content. I really enjoyed the original storyline which follows the character, Wendy. Her father died when she was young and her mother had an unnatural hatred towards her, but why? Wendy’s life is literally turned upside down when Finn arrives at her school. He tells her that she is in fact a Troll who was switched at birth with another child. Wendy is then taken on an adventure of finding out her true identity, avoiding the “enemy” and falling in love. Published by Pan MacMillan. Review by Roxanne Daniels. • The Three Billy Goats Gruff and Little Red Riding Hood are gorgeously retold and illustrated in these popular children’s tales published by Ladybird. In these versions no-one gets eaten! In The Three Little Pigs, also retold, and published by Ladybird, the big bad wolf does have two slap-up meals. But in this retelling the third little pig is extra clever and really gives the wolf his come-uppance. FOR ADULTS: BOOK: • Returning to Myself. Author, Linda Smith, gives her version of events and her experiences in central and Southern Africa in the 1960s and 1970s. She gives a graphic description of horrors in the Congo, the changes experienced in the Rhodesias (Zambia and current day Zimbabwe), and finally tells about her move to, and life in, South Africa. In the final chapters of the book Linda offers wisdom on how to deal with life and relationships – pertinent when considered in light of what African has suffered. Available from the author, Linda Smith, 031 – 261 5496. • Diacs and Quirks in a Nutshell by Nicky Grieshaber. A very useful and systematic reference guide for second-language users of Afrikaans who are not familiar with the underlying principles of Afrikaans spelling, the rules that apply and the correct use of the diacritics. All the challenging subject matter, exceptions and relevant rules are clearly and systematically explained and most important of all it is written in English. Indeed a must-buy for every South African, not only for those who need it for work purposes, but also for those who are intrigued by the language itself. Contact nicky@nickygrieshaber.co.za or order online (also available in electronic format) at www.nickygrieshaber.co.za/Afrikaans-spellingdiacritics.php. DVD: • Midnight in Paris. An engaged couple, Gil (Owen Wilson) and Inez (Rachel McAdams), spend a holiday in Paris together with Inez’s parents. Gil, an aspiring writer, is awestruck by Paris. On the stroke of midnight one night, Gil is transported back to another era, one in which he meets the authors he so aspires to be like. He also meets a woman who, in turn, longs to be part of an even earlier era. We learn from this thought-provoking Woody Allen film that, as humans, we are prone to look somewhere other than the present for happiness. A NuMetro release. WIN WIN WIN Mum’s Mail has one copy of each book & DVD (excluding Switched) and two copies of Diacs and Quirks in a Nutshell to give away. Visit www.mumsmail.com to enter.

Dad’s Life Being Dad... A Single Mom Writes... Being a single Mom? Tough! My eyes were wide open; I knew it was going to be a challenge to be both Mom and Dad. Fortunately I’d had some handy experience ... I had a chance to skydive shortly before I adopted. Throwing caution to the wind, quite literally, and “leaping out of the box” was not all that different from being a single Mom. When I see my little tot heading for the big slide and all I want to do is pull her back, I force myself to saunter over and casually say “Gosh, you’re high. Be careful and hold on,” instead of screaming in terror. When she gets to the bottom I’ve learnt to clap and smile bravely! Children need a bit of rough play with a Dad, so I had to learn to rough and tumble on the lounge floor with my girls. We come out bruised but better for it! I lack the physical strength of a father, too. I can’t carry the children on my shoulders or spin them around until they’re dizzy. I’ve had to rely on friends to do that! Are they “hard done by” not having a Dad there always? I don’t think so!

I’ve noticed that mothers tend to play the good cop to Dad’s bad cop but I’ve learnt to be a strict disciplinarian and to practise a little tough love when it’s necessary. I believe it’s important for all parents to cultivate qualities of both parenting roles even if you have a partner as there will always be moments when you have to parent your children alone.
Support the hopes of a child, buy a sticker and slide into your slippers on 3 August, and make their dreams come true. Buy your R10 sticker at Milady’s Stores from 1 July. Dad’s Life Shopping For Teenage Clothes - A Father in Therapy The inexperienced father takes his teenage daughter shopping for clothes. It’s usually the one riddled with guilt at not spending enough time with her. His judgement thus greatly impaired by feelings of paternal inadequacy, he agrees to take her to the mall for a complete clothing makeover. He parks the car, smiles blithely at his daughter and, unaware of the forthcoming ordeal, escorts her into the mall. He walks proudly and protectively next to her. She’s his little girl; there’s nothing he won’t do to make her happy. He nods towards Edgars, saying, “Ah, here we are.” “No Daddy” she replies, “there’s the shop,” and points to Rebel Kids Co. The shop façade resembles a violent youth demonstration. He looks around nervously…but noone comes to his aid - no police, no Mothers…just himself and his daughter entering a den of clothing iniquity. The next two hours are an ordeal he discusses with his therapist in private. “My daughter’s clothing sense is an assault on human decency, global economy and world peace in general,” he whimpers. “Jeans that look like they were recovered from the carnage of Hurricane Katrina.” He breaks down and the therapist hands him the tissue box. “The tops were so small they covered about as much as a postage stamp on a subpoena issued for a trial on public indecency. And then the shoes… so many outlandish colours and absurd designs. There were so many she wanted doctor, and I couldn’t refuse her….she was so excited, and she told me I was the best Daddy in the World”…sobbing uncontrollably. “It’s not the fact that she maxed my credit card doc...I wake up in the dark and I can still hear the squeaking of the shoes.” By Simon Stengel.

Business Life Harry’s Secret Savings
Roger Knowles Attorney
Harry kept his money to himself. During his nine-year marriage to Sally, he paid a half share of the rent, water and electricity. He also bought groceries every Sunday, choosing his favourite soups, tinned goods and fruit. These were presented to his wife with a flourish, as if he were providing her with all the necessities of a luxurious life. Sally, who earned less than Harry, spent far more on the household. She paid for everything else, including the maid, the bulk of the food and groceries, clothing, entertainment, insurance and all expenses for their little girl. She struggled, but she was never aware that this might not be necessary - she did not know what Harry earned and that he was keeping most of it to himself. He was not spending it. He was hoarding the money, feeding a policy and a saving account. The marriage ended without scandal. There was simply no meaningful connection. He lived his life, she lived hers. She wanted more from life and decided to go. They agreed to divide the household each took what they had brought into the marriage.

Harry’s attorney issued the summons. Apart from the divorce and joint parental rights, he claimed “forfeiture of benefits”. Harry wanted to keep his money. He argued that Sally had not contributed towards his investments at all and that she would be “unduly benefited” if she received a share. The court disagreed. Sally deserved her share of the joint estate, it held. She had worked hard, paid more of the expenses of the joint estate and had no savings only because Harry had been mean. He was ordered to pay her half the investments, maintenance for the child and all her legal costs.

Networking Organisations: BNI Gateway The 10 Commandments of Business Networking BNI’s founder and chairman, Dr Ivan Misner, is the author of several books, including the most recent addition to the bestselling Masters Series - “Masters of Sales” and the New York Times bestseller “Truth or Delusion?” Here he provides his 10 top tips for making business networking pay: • Have the tools to network with you at all times. These include an informative name badge, business cards, brochures and a file containing cards of other professionals who you can refer. • Set a goal for the number of people you’ll meet. Get their business cards and don’t leave until you’ve met your goal. • Act like a host, not a guest. Volunteer to help greet people. If you see visitors sitting, introduce yourself and ask if they would like to meet others. Act as a conduit. • Listen and ask questions. Remember that a good networker has two ears and one mouth and uses them proportionately. • Don’t try to close a deal. Networking is about developing relationships with other professionals. Meeting people at events should be the beginning of that process, not the end of it. • Give referrals whenever possible. The best networkers believe in the “Givers Gain” philosophy. If you can’t give someone a bona fide referral, try to offer some information that might be of interest to them. • Exchange business cards. Ask each person you meet for two cards - one to pass on to someone else and one to keep. • Manage your time efficiently. Spend 10 minutes or less with each person you meet and don’t linger with friends or associates. • Write notes on the backs of business cards you collect. • Follow up! Delicious Life Primi Ballito Opens Kids’ Area Primi Plantation unveiled their dedicated kids’ play area to a crowd of excited children and their parents on 22 June. Bold, bright and colourful, the area captured the hearts and imagination of all the kids. More than a month in the making, meticulous care and attention to detail are evident throughout. This is a restaurant play area like no other. “I have a toddler, and often found that kiddies’ play areas are geared towards older children. At this young age it’s all about imagination and creativity and that is what we’ve focused on,” said owner Himal Patel. There is everything from watercolours to crayons, play tea-services to monster trucks. And of course the famous Primi dough - roll it, squash it, cut it, create it - and all this while working those fine motor skills. “We don’t want to just occupy kids, we want to stimulate them. We want them to really enjoy themselves. I envisioned a space in which kids could feel at home,” he added.

To underscore the feeling of belonging, the first 24 kids to visit the area had the opportunity of marking their territory. Colourful plates adorn the walls with the names and handprints of these pioneer kids. These will be on display for the foreseeable future. The restaurant is more than happy to help with the organisation of birthday parties, specially tailored to your needs. Kitchen tours can also be arranged, giving kids an opportunity to experience the heart and soul of the restaurant. Recently voted as “the most entertaining venue on the North Coast” in the Sugar Rush Big Five competition, Primi Plantation just keeps getting better and better.

Mum’s Mail Editor, Alice Leah, had this to say: “When Wendy told me about the eating out plan that Live2Give offers, I was naturally sceptical - I have been roped into so many restaurant discount plans/ cards and never ended up using them. But this one sounded different, and assuming we ate out at least twice a month, the R99 monthly fee would more than pay for itself. I am happy to report that I have already used my card twice and received R89 off my bill at Blockman’s in Glenashley and R55 off my bill at Luigi’s in Umhlanga! Green Life CROW Education Centre CROW is the Centre for Rehabilitation of Wildlife situated in Yellowwood Park, Durban. It is a wildlife hospital that cares for the injured and orphaned wild animals and birds in KZN. In June this year CROW opened its new environmental education centre. This exciting new development will help to further raise awareness of local animal conservation, expanding local awareness of CROW and continuing to improve the status of wildlife conservation in Durban. The opening of the new education centre will supplement the usual tour of CROW, which takes place on the last Sunday of every month at 11am. The tour encompasses a visit to some of the enclosures with animals in rehabilitation, followed by the education centre. Moreover, the balance between interesting information about Durban’s local wildlife conservation and an entertaining, museum-like feel to the education centre makes it a perfect day trip for families in the area to enjoy CROW’s serene setting. For any other dates, school tours and private group tours can be arranged by contacting CROW in advance. A minimum of six people is required. Almost 90% of animals admitted to CROW have sustained injuries due to human negligence. It takes time and dedication to rehabilitate these animals and to prepare them to be reintroduced into their natural environment. Some animals’ injuries are so severe that they cannot be rehabilitated and therefore become permanent residents at CROW. Animals that are currently being rehabilitated are placed in enclosures far away from human activity. Enclosures are created to be as similar to the animals’ natural environment as possible.

Home Life Bring Lizards and Butterflies to Your Garden
SO L A R H OT W ATE R
Lizard Hotels: You want lizards in the garden because they eat insects that eat your plants, so build them a habitat/hotel. To do this you need stones and a log, a quiet location with a place for lizards to lie in the sun. Search the garden for a good place to build the lizard hotel. Place the log and stones, carefully leaving gaps for lizards and air to move. This luxury accommodation will be occupied quickly and soon lizards will be eating your insect problem away. A Butterfly Paradise: Butterflies are a beautiful addition to any garden, and exciting to children. For butterflies in the garden you will need: • Flowers of varying heights and colours to provide food (nectar). • Water in a hollowed out rock, and a mud bath. • A warm rock to rest upon in a sunny spot. • Leaves for the eggs and caterpillars. Home Life Liquid Wallpaper Liquid wallpaper is not wallpaper at all but gives the effect of wallpaper using a specialised, eco-friendly paint. The client can select any base coat colour for their wall which is then tinted in the unique, odourless, non-toxic base paint. The pattern is then applied using an embossed roller and a pearlised top coat made from crushed seashells which catches the light and gives the walls a gorgeous textured, embossed effect. This top coat generally comes in pearl white, silver, gold and charcoal but can also be tinted if desired. There are 150 patterns to choose from and the paint is also suitable for bathrooms and kitchens. Alice Leah, Editor of Mum’s Mail, had this to say about the product: “I have never really taken to the idea of wallpaper, as it conjures up visions of brown and orange swirls my Mom loved in the 70s - very retro! But the idea of liquid wallpaper was intriguing as there is no actual paper that gets glued onto the wall. It is all paint! Dominique came to see me regarding the main wall in my bedroom and after going through her pattern and colour books she suggested a few designs that would suit the wall, and I chose a bamboo design in a dark grey with a lighter grey background. It took two mornings and I am thoroughly delighted with the result. Best of all is that the walls can be wiped down if dirty/dusty and it gave me a good excuse to buy new linen to match the new grey walls. I would recommend this in any bedroom or lounge or even your dining room as it makes for a very striking wall.” Contact: Simply Accessorize, Candice 083 321 1303, Dominique 083 387 8600, dbn@liquidwallpaper.co.za, www.liquidwallpaper.co.za.

Home Life The Fanciest Loo Ever! Sensowash is a very hygienic, remote control toilet that acts as a bidet and toilet in one. Press a button and the seat lid rises as you approach. Sit down and you will feel that the seat is heated, making using the loo, especially in winter, a comfortable experience. The seat even lights up so you can find your way in the dark without switching on any lights. The toilet has an operating unit attached to the wall and you simply press one of the buttons to select the cleaning operation you want. These include Rearwash, Comfortwash and Ladywash - a nozzle moves out to the desired position and gently sprays the user clean. This can be followed by a hot-air dryer after selecting the appropriate option. There are different flush options available as well, depending on what is required. The toilet also has a child safety feature and memory cards for two users. The design is sleek and unfussy and the toilet featured is wall mounted, making cleaning beneath the unit easy. Healthy Life Metabolic Syndrome Metabolic syndrome is the name for a group of risk factors that raises your risk for heart disease and other health problems, like diabetes and stroke. Metabolic syndrome is becoming more common due to a rise in obesity. In the future, metabolic syndrome may overtake smoking as the leading risk factor for heart disease. Your risk for heart disease, diabetes, and stroke increases with the number of metabolic risk factors you have. In general, a person who has metabolic syndrome is twice as likely to develop heart disease and five times as likely to develop diabetes as someone who doesn’t have metabolic syndrome.

The World Health Organization (WHO) criteria for metabolic syndrome are: High insulin levels, an elevated, fasting blood glucose or elevated postmeal glucose, with at least two of the following: • Abdominal obesity as defined by a waist-to-hip ratio of greater than 0.9, a body mass index of at least 30 kg/m2 or waist measurement over 94cm. • Cholesterol panel showing triglyceride level of at least 150 mg/dl or HDL cholesterol lower than 35 mg/dl. • Blood pressure of 140/90 or above (or on treatment for high blood pressure). First Line Therapy (FLT) has been demonstrated in controlled clinical trials to be effective in the treatment of metabolic syndrome as well as many other lifestyle related problems such as elevated cholesterol, insulin resistance and increased weight/obesity. FTL is a 12-week “therapeutic lifestyle programme” designed to attack underlying causes and therefore improve overall health. It targets cellular health and as a result, higher energy levels are achieved, the body metabolises fat better and therefore loses unhealthy weight. There is also an improvement in mental function, sleep and sex drive. Contact: Sylvia Nienaber, 031 - 303 5578, drnienaber@positivehealthkzn.co.za.

Healthy Life Road to London: Paralympic Team Named
Kinderkinetics
SASCOC have announced yet another star-studded team to travel to the London Paralympic Games later this year. The team is only slightly down on the 66 athletes that travelled to Beijing, China, the city which hosted the Paralympic Games in 2008.
Carolien Botes
Kinderkinetics is a scientifically based exercise programme for the total wellbeing of children
Benefits include:
The squad will be spread over seven different codes. These are: athletics, cycling, equestrian, rowing, swimming, wheelchair basketball and wheelchair tennis, with athletics having the strongest representation with 25 athletes. Swimming will have 10 competitors while the wheelchair basketball team is made up of 12 athletes. Next highest is the six cycling competitors. Spearheading the athletics code will be three-time Paralympian Oscar Pistorius while five-time gold medallist in Beijing, Natalie du Toit, is the pick of the aquatics code. Speaking at the team announcement a proud SASCOC CEO, Tubby Reddy, said he had no doubts the selected team would return triumphant. “Although qualifying standards are high, our Paralympians have a global reputation for excellence and I know they will once again do us proud. The’ve fought long and hard to get into this team and we shall see the rewards at these Paralympics. Let me remind you that the first South Africans to represent their country at the Paralympics numbered just nine, way back at the 1964 Tokyo Paralympics and they set the benchmark by bringing back eight gold medals. At the last Paralympics in Beijing we sent a team of 66 and between them they brought back 30 medals, 21 of which were gold. This is the high standard of excellence that we have come to expect from our Paralympians.”

What is Alopecia Areata?
MbChB (Natal). F.C Dermatology (SA)
This is a condition in which patients present with sudden localised or generalised hair loss with no evidence of scarring. The patches of hair loss may occur on any part of the body. They may be smooth and well defined.
• General dermatology • Paediatric dermatology • Mole screening • Dermatology surgery Contracted to most Medical Aids (Conditions Apply) Suite G07 Musgrave Park, 18 Musgrave Road, Berea Tel: 031 - 201 3322 Tel 2: 031 - 201 3397 www.doctorskin.co.za
What is the cause of Alopecia Areata? The exact cause of the condition is unknown. However, it is thought that it is most likely due to the body itself attacking the hair follicle. What are the clinical presentations of this condition? It usually starts as a single patch of hair loss. It may then expand to develop new patches. The common sites of involvement include the scalp, beard, eyebrows and eyelashes. The hair can spontaneously regrow with this condition. However, the regrowth depends on the duration of the condition. The longer the duration, the poorer the chance of hair growth. When hair growth does occur, it usually occurs with a white tuft of hair.

Healthy Life Organ Donor Month: Become a Bone Marrow Stem Cell Donor Christy was diagnosed with leukaemia on 23 December 2011. Her sister, Rei, says: “Christy is my eldest sister, the person I have looked up to and my hero when growing up. Alisa is our middle sister and we always stood together. Christy has been married to Phil for 18 years and has a daughter, Aidan. This tight knit family has been torn apart by this disease with only the phone keeping them together. I never realised how leukaemia affects everyone around you! We all go along blissfully unaware of all the horrors that are befalling others. Yes, we read about it in the media (as you are doing here), but we never think that it will affect us. I never stopped to think; wow, I could save a person’s life if I joined the South African Bone Marrow Registry (SABMR). It just did not occur to me to do it when I did not have anyone who needed it! Fortunately not everyone thinks the same. Alisa is a regular blood donor and has been on SABMR for five years in the hope of saving someone’s life. My thoughts have changed. Unfortunately neither Alisa nor I are a match for Christy but we are now reaching out to others to save her. After not matching Christy I was asked to transfer my blood test results to the SABMR. How could I not? How could I expect someone else’s sister (or brother) to save my sister if I was not prepared to save theirs? I am now on the SABMR hoping to save someone you care about. Are you willing to return the favour?”

Healthy Life Skin Doctor Q & A Question: What are chemical peels? Are they safe on Asian skin? (Aneesa). Answer: Chemical peels are treatments made up of a low pH chemical (acids) that help to exfoliate the superficial layers of skin to treat acne scars, wrinkles, uneven skin tone and pigmentation. Fruit acid peels are made up of extracts of fruit. For example citric acid from citrus fruit, glycolic acid from sugar cane and lactic acid from milk. The fruit acid peels, especially glycolic, are very safe for all skin types provided that they are applied by a trained professional.
Dr Paul Darby-Wade Dentist BCHD (STELL.), MFGDP RCS (UK), FGDP (UK) Diploma in Implant Dentistry
The glycolic peels are also known as “lunchtime” peels as they are very gentle with no down-time and patients can go back to their normal routines after the peel. It treats every skin colour and is the safest 4 Langford Road, system to use on all skin types (darker skins may require an extra LifeCentre, Westville treatment or so, compared to light skin). During a free consultation you will be assessed and advised about the number of treatments you may require, usually six to eight sessions. Body areas may require fewer treatments and facial areas may require more, depending on the individual. The treated anagen hair usually drops out two to three weeks after treatment and side effects are rare and transient. Makeup can be worn directly after treatment if you wish. To remove hair in between treatments shaving is best (don’t wax or pluck or use electrolysis as this will compromise the treatment plan). Treatments are done four to six weeks apart. The Soprano XL delivers light gently and safely to the hair root, is absorbed there, heats the root to 45°C and damages or destroys the base of the follicle and seals the capillaries so that it can no longer produce more hair. Healthy Life Mangosteen Juice Mangosteen juice is made from the queen of fruits, the mangosteen. Found in the South East Asia region as well as other tropical locations around the world, the mangosteen is a fruit with a delicious fleshy white centre and a bitter purple rind (where most of the goodness is found). The mangosteen has been used for thousands of years in folklore medicine and is still widely used by traditional healers in Thailand, Cambodia, Philippines and India. The fruit is used by these healers as an: antimicrobial agent, anti-inflammatory agent, analgesic (pain reliever), and anti-diarrhoeal and gastrointestinal agent.
Inflammation is the basis of most chronic conditions. Xanthones have been scientifically proven to reduce inflammation - Powerful antioxidants found in mangosteen, with cardio protective, anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal, anti-viral, anti-arthritic, anti-obesity and cancer preventative properties - Assisting with conditions such as asthma, eczema, ADD, ADHD, Cancer, HIV, TB, Psoriasis, Ulceration of bowels and mouth, IBS, Cholesterol, Hypertension, Diabetes and more.
Nasrin Paruk 031- 826 2150 or 083 994 0786
Mangosteen has powerful natural anti-inflammatory properties as well as a class of powerful antioxidants known as xanthones. There are over 200 xanthones that have been identified and the mangosteen fruit contains 40. Inflammation is the precursor to most chronic conditions including cancer, heart disease, Alzheimer’s, diabetes, allergies, asthma, arthritis and auto-immune diseases. As disease develops, symptoms may be silent for many years. Mangosteen juice provides a golden opportunity for you to intervene and potentially prevent the disease from progressing. By decreasing inflammation, you can potentially decrease your risk of many chronic diseases of ageing caused by free radical damage and chronic inflammation. Properties found in this fruit that make it so phenomenal are: anti-ageing, cardio protective, antidepressant, anti-arthritic, osteoprotective, antibacterial, antiviral, anti-Alzheimer’s, antiTB, antifungal, anti-oxidant, anti-obesity, increase in mental alertness and supports the body to reduce pain. Why would anybody use chemicals in their body when a natural alternative is available?

Beautiful Life Winning in the Workplace For the past 14 years the Durban branch of the BWA (Businesswomen’s Association) has presented a workshop on Women’s Day 9 August for approximately 350 female Grade 12 learners from various schools. The workshop provides the “businesswomen of tomorrow” with the necessary skills to make a success of their future entrance into the business world. This project is the largest corporate citizenship project of the BWA in Durban and is sponsored in its entirety. Farzanah Mall, chairperson of the BWA, said: “We as professional businesswomen recognise that many promising young ladies may never be afforded the opportunity to learn how to make informed career choices, manage their finances and be inspired by successful women. Through initiatives like these, we hope to increase private-public sector partnership by encouraging the private sector to sponsor events of this nature as well as encouraging professionals to speak to school girls to inspire them to reach their full potential and achieve success as they journey towards womanhood in our beautiful country.” Over 100 schools within Durban and surrounding areas, particularly disadvantaged schools in rural locations, are invited to send their top three learners to the workshop. Transport to the Graduate School of Business, UKZN’s Westville campus, is provided. Meals, talks, prizes, memory bags and more make up the day. As the event is fully sponsored, sponsorship for all the aforementioned is needed. Company sponsors are mentioned in all press releases and businesses are invited to set up small displays at the event. The BWA is the largest association of professional businesswomen in S.A. and is the voice of women in business. It provides regular events and opportunities to network and runs a business achiever awards programme. Contact: Catherine Smith, BWA, 031 - 563 8496, dbn@bwasa.co.za.

Beautiful Life Liza Clifford Turns One When Liza Clifford started her professional Bra Fitting Studio she never thought it would be so successful. Now, she has celebrated the studio’s first birthday and needs to expand. The idea of providing a fitting service with the sale of a few bras is how Liza started off. A passionate graphic designer, a blog and Facebook followed, as did a meeting with a coach who said “if you enjoy your work you cannot call it work”. This is why Liza cannot call her work a job - it’s where she meets amazing ladies who teach her so much about life, herself and appreciation. She has had fun, has developed precious friendships and has laughed until her tummy hurts. “We cry a lot too,” said Liza, “and that is good too.” Liza has had special friends who encouraged her along the way and spread the word, and a number of professionals who acted as Liza’s loud hailer. These brand ambassadors have done a lot to get Liza’s business known and trusted by others. Of course her family has also been a huge help, despite the sacrifices that have had to be made. “Imagine explaining to your husband that you forgot to pick up your five year old from school?” laughed Liza. “My husband was amazing and helped where he could, always loving and understanding.” Liza’s business is now at the stage where she needs a few more of “her” to reach the many women out there who need a proper fitting. The question is: how to keep the unique, one-on-one consultations AND expand? The future is so exciting!

Beautiful Life Get Rid of those Holiday Bulges with Contour Aesthetics Weight gain over the holiday period is a reality most of us can identify with. We can relate to increasing the link on our belt buckle when the new season rolls around. On average, people gain between 1kg and 1.5kg over the holiday period. This may not sound like much but many of us would admit that this is rarely lost and if done so (often very slowly) then it comes back again when the next holiday rolls around! Many of us notice this weight gain around the belly area. Weight gain in this area is associated with an increased risk of diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Of course the best way to prevent this is to eat healthily and to exercise regularly during the holiday period. But these great intentions are often difficult to follow through with, especially during the holidays. All the more reason to remove those bulges as soon as possible. So why not start off spring and summer with a flat stomach? It’s possible with Contour Aesthetics. Contour Aesthetics can remove bulges for you with instant results and once-off treatments using VASER Lipo. VASER Lipo, introduced in South Africa only a few years ago, is a safe and less painful alternative to traditional liposuction. Using a technique called LipoSelection, VASER Lipo uses ultrasonic waves to gently break up and separate fat cells for removal, while leaving vital tissues undamaged. VASER Lipo is great for tight, fibrous areas such as the back and posterior flanks, where increased blood loss would be expected. In most cases no repeat treatments are necessary in the same area and there is no stay-over for patients after treatment. Contact: Contour Aesthetics, 083 786 9336, info@contouraesthetics.co.za. Visit www.contouraesthetics.co.za.
INSTANTLY remove those WINTER BULGES! NO repeat treatments in the same area required!

Beautiful Life My “Shopping In the City” Experience I went on a shopping tour of town with a lady named Lynne and it was so much fun! Four of us met Lynne in one of the parking lots in town where she explained all the rules to us, like when we cross the road and whatnot. Then we started shopping! The very first shop we went to was called “Priced to Make you Smile”, and the prices ranged from R40 to R120! It was amazing and certainly made me smile! I bought two items from this shop. The next shop we went to had the loudest music and Lynne had to shout for us four to be able to hear her. There were lots of gorgeous things in this shop but most of them were for older women, not teens. If you are looking for gorgeous but not expensive scarves, town is the place to look (R15 to R30 each)! Lynne told us all about what’s on trend, what colours to wear and what will suit you. She also made us model for the girls and they would give you a yes/no/maybe. Halfway though we stopped at Wimpy for a late breakfast/early lunch where we ordered a sandwich and ate on the go. Everything was dirt cheap. There are the most extraordinary clothes in town. I saw some gold pants and we made a huge joke of it. We stopped at around 10 or 11 shops and I bought 10 items for R450! One of the last shops we went to had everything imaginable from a famous chain store, from tops to sweatshirts to gorgeous pants. By the end of the day I was all shopped out. Beautiful Life Ozone Detox Pad The Ozone Detox Pad is a safe and effective three-way therapeutic treatment using ozone, resonance and far infrared to enhance the body’s healing powers through oxygenation and detoxification. Our modern lifestyles are characterised by poor diet, lack of exercise, alcohol and environmental pollution. These, and the stresses of daily life, place tremendous burdens on our bodies which make it difficult for them to perform their natural functions efficiently. These result in fatigue, allergies, accelerated ageing or more serious diseases. The importance, therefore, of detoxing cannot be overemphasised and the Ozone Detox Pad is the perfect system with specialised programmes to ensure detoxification takes place at the deepest cellular level. The Ozone Detox Pad also treats cellulite and stretch marks, improves circulation (lymph drainage, liver and kidney cleansing) and tissue oxygenation and healing. Ozone - Ozone (O3) is a superactive form of oxygen which penetrates the skin transdermally. Upon contact the ozone immediately reacts with the blood plasma and body fluids in the skin and mucous membranes to create long-term biochemical reactions. Resonance - Every biochemical compound oscillates at its own unique frequency which is its own electromagnetic signature that is genetically determined. During states of toxic overload or disease, the frequency can be altered. Resonance Therapy can correct the frequency. Far Infrared Therapy - This profound therapy is a way to rid the body of accumulated toxins as it promotes sweating at a safe, lower and more comfortable, dry heat than a traditional sauna. Far infrared rays penetrate the skin and underlying tissues up to 45mm deep. Contact: Karen Fann, The Firm, 031 - 564 0660.

Beautiful Life Get Rid of that Sluggish Feeling this Winter
Impression Image Management
Winter often leaves us feeling sluggish and lacking in energy which is linked to the fact that in winter our biological clocks are set to conserve energy in order to maintain heat in our systems. Lots of energy boosting products are available on the market, but before reaching for the nearest quick fix here are a few hints to help you cope better with the tired and blue feeling often experienced in winter: • You can restore your energy by waking early and taking a brisk walk. • Your mind is a most powerful tool. Having a positive attitude can help you shake off some of the lethargy. • Avoid artificial stimulants such as caffeine and energy drinks - these give a false sense of energy but unfortunately lead to a “crash” or collapse once the caffeine wears off. • Vitamin and mineral tonics are great but the effect can take a period of time to be felt. • An ideal product would be one that provides instant energy and that produces a mild laxative action to remove toxins through the colon. It should contain ingredients that are rich in vitamins and minerals in their natural state and contain no artificial stimulants.

Most people tend to turn to “comfort foods” in the winter months, which are loaded with carbohydrates and fats. This leads to weight gain and a general feeling of sluggishness. To avoid this vicious cycle of lethargy, depression and ill health eat the following: • Increase fruit intake, vegetables, grains, raw nuts and seeds. • Eat yoghurt at least three times a week. • Foods rich in magnesium are very beneficial e.g. kidney beans, soya, almonds, molasses, bananas and brown rice.

Tiny Life Give Baby 5 Star Treatment
Unplanned pregnancy? Decisions to make?
Every Mom wants to do what is best for her baby but she is constantly confronted with conflicting advice, making it hard for her to know where to begin. For this reason, leading nappy brand, Pampers has compiled a 5 star panel of experts to identify how Mom can give baby the best possible experience to nurture her development. Carefully selected to provide invaluable advice on what is best for baby, Dr Mpofu (Dermatologist), Dr Hetan Hari (Paediatrician), Sister Lilian (Parenting Expert), Leanne Manas (Award-winning TV Presenter and Mom) and Natasha Clark (Parenting Blogger) have gathered to provide Mom with guidance on how to give baby the 5 star treatment. Together they agree that caring for baby’s skin is one of the very best things a Mom can do for baby. Sensory Alert: “Your little one’s sensory experiences shape the way in which his brain and nervous system grow and mature. Crawling, touching, smelling, seeing and hearing brings baby into contact with new sensory experiences that guide his development. By taking care of his skin Mom ensures that baby can explore his world without the distraction of discomfort,” advises leading Paediatrician, Dr Hetan Hari, one of the 5 star panellists. Pampers knows that Moms want to do what is best for baby, which is why the premium nappy brand has developed a nappy that offers 5 star skin protection. The 5 stars are: Ultra Dry, Ultra Care, Ultra Thin, Ultra Fit and Ultra Comfortable.

Tiny Life Fighting Back Against the Common Cold When your little one is under the weather, it feels like your whole world is coming to a standstill. Although there’s no cure for the common cold, there’s lots you can do to relieve the symptoms until your little one’s body has had the chance to fight back. Colds are caused by a group of viruses (over 200 viruses), Rhino virus being the most common. These viruses have the ability to change, making it difficult to build 100% immunity. The first thing you need to do when your little one starts with a sniffle is to identify what you’re dealing with. Common colds frequently start with a stuffy, runny nose and sneezing. Young children’s bodies do their best to fight off this viral infection, so your little one may also run a fever of between 37°C and 39°C. While his little body is under assault from the cold virus, your child may also experience a post-nasal drip, cough, sore throat, decreased appetite and muscle aches. All of this can go on for as long as seven days, with some symptoms, like the cough or postnasal drip taking another week to clear up completely. However, if you are uncertain about any of your child’s symptoms, if the mucous turns yellow or green or if a high fever (39˚C) persists for more than two days, it’s best to see your doctor.
wellbeing and take care of minor gripes and niggles - Purity Pedia Kids. This range has been developed under the guidance of a team of specialists, including a pharmacist, paediatrician, dermatologist, dietician and homeopath. The following products from Purity Pedia Kids will help make your life a little easier in treating your little one’s common cold: • Purity Pedia Kids Throat Pops with a pleasant cherry menthol flavour provide relief from sore throats for children from two years. They contain Zinc to help boost the immune system, and menthol and eucalyptus for their cooling and soothing properties. • Purity Pedia Kids Nasal Spray is a saline formula that helps dissolve mucous and relieve dryness of the nasal passages, to help your baby breathe more easily. Suitable for babies from birth. • Purity Pedia Kids Vapour Gel is suitable for babies from 6 months to help clear their blocked and stuffy noses. • Purity Pedia Kids Cough Syrup is a honey-flavoured, non-drowsy homeopathic preparation that may provide symptomatic relief from coughs in babies from birth.
Cold viruses are spread either in droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes, or by touching someone with a cold or something that they have recently touched. As long as your little one is getting enough fluids and the fever is manageable, you can boost his immune system with adequate vitamin and mineral supplements like Purity Pedia Kids Emulsion and Vita Pops. Remember that antibiotics fight bacterial infections, and have no effect against the cold virus. Symptomatic treatment will provide relief and better opportunity for healing rest. Tiny Life Breastfeeding in Public
EDU BABE
During Breastfeeding Awareness Week many hospitals and organisations arrange talks to help Mothers become more aware of the benefits of breastfeeding. While contemplating what to write on this topic, it occurred to me that, as much as we need these talks, the one thing that will really help increase the awareness of breastfeeding, is for Mothers to make discreet public breastfeeding as natural as breathing, wherever they go, whenever they can.

Many Mothers say they express so that they can bottle-feed their babies their milk while out. Though this is “fine”, it actually sends a message to society that bottlefeeding is the acceptable norm. Besides, anyone looking at the healthy, Mothersmilk-fed baby is usually oblivious that it’s breastmilk in the bottle, reinforcing the incorrect perception that formula-feeding is healthy. It is sad that more Mothers haven’t felt comfortable to breastfeed in public. Mothers have told me that they feel isolated, lonely, and that they’re the “only one” breastfeeding out there! Isn’t it strange that many Mothers feel the same? So I encourage Mothers to be a good advert and rather breastfeed while they’re out and about. Many have come back excited that they’ve seen more Mothers doing the same, and others have joined them! If Mothers lovingly and discreetly breastfeed their little ones on park or mall benches, in restaurants, or in queues, possibly using something like a Baby Sling for support and privacy, it’s a positive message that, hey, breastfeeding is normal and beautiful, and everyone’s doing it! On a lighter note, if anyone has a problem with a baby breastfeeding discreetly, they’re staring too hard! So go on Mom! Be the change you’d like to see! Young Life Let Children Run Barefoot
New club now open with HEATED POOL at Crawford North Coast!
During the course of our lifetime, our feet carry us three to four times around the world, which is why ensuring your children’s feet are pain free is vital if they are to keep active and healthy. Even in a baby’s tiny foot, there are 28 bones, 107 ligaments and 19 muscles, as well as joints and tendons which provide support and mobility. In order for children to run, hop or jump, their feet must not only be stable and robust, but also extremely flexible. It is for this reason that nature has given them a very special structure.

According to Nelfrie Kemp, a podiatrist and national executive member of the Podiatry Association of South Africa (PASA), our children should be allowed to run around in bare feet as much as possible, which is much easier for them than their peers in the northern hemisphere. “Children should only wear shoes when they are in public places such as shopping centres or school, or for protection against the elements. By walking and running around barefoot on grass and sand, and by climbing jungle gyms and trees, children are able to exercise the intrinsic muscles of their feet and legs, which will stand them in good stead as they get older.” According to Kemp, it is extremely important that children’s feet are measured on a regular basis as they differ to adults in that they are still growing, are mainly made up of cartilage and are a different shape to grown ups’. Poorly fitting children’s shoes can cause a number of problems in adults, therefore it is vital to ensure that your child’s shoes fit correctly. For more information visit www.podiatrist.co.za.

Young Life Beesting Meets the Tree of Much Hearing and Little Listening
STUDIO PORTRAITS & OUTDOOR PHOTOGRAPHY
At first, Beatrice did not seem like a friendly beetle at all. She kept on buzzzzzzing her busy wings in Beesting’s left ear whilst prodding with her little walking stick in his right ear. At times she pointed and waved with a stern little finger. But Beatrice wasn’t angry at all. It was just that the sun was beginning to throw long shadows amongst the forest trees. That meant only one thing - the day was fast coming to an end. Soon it would be getting dark and Beatrice wanted Beesting and the kids to meet a very old but important tree - the tree of much hearing and little listening. They followed Beatrice through the many ferns and the thick brambleberry bushes. Beatrice flew so fast, there was no time to stop to even pick and taste one. Then, all of a sudden, the tree was there, right in front of them. It was so huge and tall. Beesting saw the big brown tree trunk. It had one huge ear on one side and a little ear on the other side. Beatrice was sitting with her wings crossed on the tip of the large ear. Edward started laughing. “I have never seen a tree like this before,” he said. Connie did not know what to do so she covered her ears with her hands. Stella the flea, who permanently lives behind Beesting’s left ear, became very nervous - his ear began to itch. He had no option but to give it a good scratch with his hind paw.

Young Life Denim Love With just over 2 months to go until the arrival of the twins I am sure you can appreciate that every coin is a prisoner. Our outside couches have been a serious eyesore and used to distress me everytime I laid a sympathetic iris on them. Our home is a bright eclectic magpies haven and the weather beaten, cat scratch patch had finally delivered her swan song. My first thought was to replace them. Get rid of them! Hell no! I had to sit down. Eventually after what seemed like forever and a few sessions of backwards and forwards, we decided on a hot blue denim with red piping. Durable for 3 kids’ marmite hands and one ginger Fanta cat’s claws. The price you ask? R1295 - how cool?! Educated Life Berard Auditory Integration Training
HAMPTONS PRIMARY SCHOOL
Educating towards Excellence
Does your child say “Huh?” or “What?” at least five times per day? Does he need frequent “quiet time” to regain mental composure? These and many other symptoms could indicate an auditory integration problem. Auditory Integration Training (AIT) is a safe, effective sound therapy developed by Dr Guy Berard of France.
Hamptons Primary School (sister school to ever so popular Junglecubs Nursery School) is a small, co-educational independent school that has opened doors in the Durban North area. We Offer: • A curriculum that caters for the holistic development of all its pupils and emphasises the importance of leading a happy, well-balanced life. • A safe, secure and tranquil environment for our students. • SMALL CLASSES (max 18 learners per class). • Air conditioned classrooms. • We offer a special selection of SPORT including swimming, ballet, karate, soccer and netball. • A warm and “homely” aftercare service that includes: a homemade preservative free lunch and help with homework available at Junglecubs Nursery School. A Hamptons child is a happy child. We work hard, we eat healthy, we exercise and most of all we always give our best! We remember these words: “I can!”
AIT is an educational intervention that efficiently retrains a disorganised auditory system. Through his years of research, Dr Berard determined that when auditory processing is not working correctly, it prohibits the efficient processing of information. Dr Berard believed that hypersensitivity to sound, hearing distortions and delays in the auditory signals contribute to inefficient learning.
2013 registration now open! Limited spaces available!
Berard AIT is proven very successful for children with ADD, ADHD, Autism (ASD), Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD), Dyslexia and other types of learning disabilities. AIT also works well for adults with similar diagnoses, stroke or brain trauma. Alice Leah, Editor of Mum’s Mail, had this to say: “I was very keen to take my son for a hearing test with Elna, as he is currently on Ritalin for concentration problems, and one of the uses of AIT is for children/ adults with concentration problems. The test consists of a series of ‘beeps’ that the listener needs to detect, and depending on which ones they hear and don’t hear, Elna charts the graph which she then uses to determine whether AIT is necessary and of value to the child/adult. I too had a test done and was delighted to be told that my hearing is excellent, but she did also tell me that it seems I am suffering from allergies, which was the second time in two weeks that I had been told that. Interesting stuff!”

Educated Life My Child’s Assessments and What They Mean Our children are our most precious “possessions” and nothing evokes emotion in us quite like our children do. How well are they doing or not doing? Their personal happiness and development consumes our thoughts. Going to a teacher-parent interview or reading a report can be quite daunting and stressful for a parent. “Help! My child has been referred for various assessments and interventions and I don’t know what they mean…or how to cope with the results…or what to do next,” are common cries for help. With increasing pressure on our children today, in a rapidly changing learning environment, many children are referred for one or more assessments across a broad spectrum of development areas, both physical and emotional. All too often, parents can despair. And in some cases, after the costly and time-consuming process of various assessments, they may be faced with different opinions and be none the wiser as to the reasons for these PRE-SCHOOL tests and what the results really mean to their child. AND
BABY CARE
We and our children can find the process of undertaking the assessments and discovering the real reasons for an area of concern to be an emotional roller-coaster. We are expected to make choices regarding our children’s development, based on assessment results, some of which we don’t understand. An independent report and consolidation of these results can make the decision-making process as to what is best for your child a stress-free and nurturing process. Chandre Ezra can offer you a helping hand in this regard.

Educated Life Teach Your Children About Money Start teaching your children about money when they are very young - how to delay gratification and set and achieve financial goals. Pre-school: • Give them a set amount of pocket money with which they can buy treats. They will be able to learn some basic principles of budgeting. • Counsel them with each purchase, that if they get this now, they won’t be able to get that toy they planned on buying. This will also create good references for when they learn about consumerism and how to delay gratification. • Teach them to save, by making a piggy bank/money box where they can put money away for that toy/bike they have their eye on. Primary School: • Introduce more items they need to budget for to teach them to think forward into the month of what expenses they will need to purchase like birthday presents for friends, toys or outings like visits to the zoo. • Show them that they can make more money to help save for their dream bike. Help them set up a neighbourhood car wash, or a nail bar and paint all the moms’ nails in the street. • Introduce the concept of investment. Let them take some of their saved money to buy the products for their car wash and nail bar. Explain that they need to buy the products within a reasonable budget and then count how much they made and what their profit was. Put it back into their savings box. • Up the saving goals - help them set a bigger goal, such as spending money for the December holiday, a shopping trip or that awesome Acer Iconia tablet they have their heart set on.

Party Life Add Some Sparkle to Your Life First introduced in the ‘70s, through the years, the SodaStream system has evolved into a must-have kitchen appliance with clout. Aside from providing delicious carbonated soft drinks, it offers a number of health, cost-saving and eco-friendly benefits as well. The SodaStream system comprises four parts: • The Drinks Maker: Fashionable, fun, easy to use and suitable for any welldressed kitchen. They can turn tap water into sparkling water in seconds, and you can add as much fizz to your carbonated drinks as you like. • Syrups: SodaStream supplies over 20 flavoured syrups, including regular and diet flavours, energy drinks, an iced tea flavour and cocktail mixers. • Bottles: The high pressure-resistant SodaStream bottles boast hermetically sealed caps that can keep drinks fizzier for longer than store-bought carbonated drinks. They are BPA-free, making them healthier than the plastic bottles most store-bought carbonated drinks are stored in. Bottles have a lifespan of three years. • Cylinders: SodaStream carbonators are made of the highest quality to ensure the safety of these CO2 refills. They come in two sizes - 30 litres and 60 litres. Cylinders can be conveniently exchanged at a variety of retail outlets, including Pick n Pay, Spar and Game stores. It is estimated that the cost of one litre of freshly-made SodaStream soda water costs about R2, which is approximately 80% cheaper than one litre of storebought soda water. If you consume one litre of soda water per week, the savings will pay for the purchase of the SodaStream system, and leave you some change.

Party Life Inspiring Creativity in Children These days, children spend more time indoors with television, computers and video games increasingly becoming their primary sources of play-time amusement. What happened to keeping children entertained by creating toys and decorative items from bits and pieces like packaging, boxes, toilet rolls or egg boxes? Creativity allows for interaction in all areas, providing special bonding time between mother and child while helping them to decorate a photo frame, card or ornament. Birthdays are a big treat for children and inspire them to play a role in creating and decorating treats such as cupcakes.

SMARTIES wants to be part of all those experiences. As well as providing a yummy delight, SMARTIES can be used for limitless creative fun as a colourful decoration on cakes and treats or in creating fun cards for every occasion, hanging mobiles, masks, colour and shape charts to name a few. In order to encourage fun active play, SMARTIES has also recognised the need for children to be inspired and encouraged to express themselves creatively at home or in the car on long journeys. To celebrate the re-introduction of the blue SMARTIES to the range, a Blue is Back Box-a-thon was launched. This initiative urges children to indulge in imaginative play and literally use “out of the box thinking” to get creative with the colourful SMARTIES boxes. The different sized boxes allow for a world of fun from toy boats to sea horses, fish and whales.

The Icing On Top...
Making its debut during the 2010 FIFA World Cup, Moses Mabhida Stadium attracted thousands of visitors, both local and international. Since then, the beautiful building - which is one of Durban’s most famous icons - has become even more popular. However, as the only stadium in South Africa that’s open seven days a week with a range of exciting activities for the whole family, it comes as no surprise!

The Big Swing is one of the stadium’s main attractions - and for good reason. Not only is it the first swing to exist in any stadium, it was also recently confirmed as the world’s biggest swing at 106m high, earning it a Guinness World Record. Those who are brave enough to take the plunge can expect an exhilarating 220m soar through the air, directly under the stadium’s magnificent arch and over the World Cup Pitch. At R595 p.p. (over the age of 10), the Big Swing is a fantastic gift idea - and an incredible once-in-alifetime experience.

Do What?
Delicious hand iced cookies - perfect for themed parties!
bonmomentbakers@iafrica.com www.bonmomentbakers.co.za
1. Ask kids to gently dab their hands in Vaseline, giving each fingertip of one hand a very light coating (explain that you can get the best fingerprints when the fingers are slightly oily or greasy). 2. Have each child press his or her fingertips around a test tube and then remove his or her fingers carefully, not smudging the glass. 3. Take a spoonful of powder and cover the fingerprints with it until they are hidden. 4. Then use a delicate brush to dust away the powder. 5. Show the kids how to “lift” a fingerprint by pressing the sticky side of a piece of contact to it. 6. Preserve the fingerprints by applying the sticky side of the contact to a piece of paper. 7. Kids can now study the fingerprint.
Delectable Food & Speciality Coffees
So What? Forensic scientists use fingerprints to help solve crimes; this allows for kids to evaluate a sample set of finger prints. While some kids maybe familiar with the phrase “dusting for fingerprints,” few of them probably have ever done it or know what it truly means. Everyone has different fingerprints, which is why it’s important to find them at a crime scene they can be used to arrest a suspect. Activity courtesy of:

Party Life Upside-down, Inside-out and Backwards Party The kids will feel like Alice in Wonderland when they attend this upside-down, insideout and backwards party! Remember to do the opposite of what you usually do and you can’t go wrong, er, right. Invitations: Write the party details on the backs of the invitations, and write the info upside down and backwards so your guests have to decipher it (or use a mirror to read). Address the back of the envelopes instead of the fronts. Upside-down cake: Bake a “pineapple upside-down” cake. Use sweets to write kids’ names backwards on the cake. Turn the cake out of the baking tin in front of the kids so they can see the surprise topping when you flip it upsidedown. Make upside-down ice cream sundaes to go with the cake. Begin with the toppings and end with the ice cream. Costumes: Ask the kids to dress in clothes they have put on inside-out, upside-down and backwards. They may arrive with their pants turned inside out, their shirts put on backwards and their socks worn over their shoes!

NOW IN SOUTH AFRICA! Available from 1 to 9 holes Suitable for: • Birthday Parties • Picnics • Family Get Togethers & Fun Days • Fêtes • Fairs • Fundraising • Corporate, Family & Fun Days • Festivals • Churches • Schools • Resorts • Hotels
Games: Instead of pinning the tail on the donkey’s rear, pin it on its nose. Play musical chairs but instead of finding a seat when the music stops playing, find one when it begins! Have a bunch of relay races in the garden and run them all backwards. Try drawing backwards - give sheets of paper and set them in front of a mirror. Place a picture facing the mirror and have the kids copy the picture without looking at it. They may look only in the mirror as a guide. Decorations: Set the party food under the table and let the kids eat on the floor under the table! Source: 501 TV-Free Party Games.

Relaxed Life Visit the Sharks Board Waking up at 4am may not be strange to new Mums, but for the 75 seagoing staff of the KZN Sharks’ Board this is the beginning of their work day. From Richards Bay in the north to Port Edward in the south, 15 teams launch out to sea at daybreak to check and service the shark safety gear set at 400 metres offshore at popular swimming beaches. As each team hauls the nets up they check for the capture of sharks, determine whether it’s possible to tag and release the animal if it is still alive, or bring it back to shore where it is later transported to the Sharks’ Board complex in Umhlanga for dissection. Maintenance checks are also conducted and any minor repairs are immediately carried out. When the teams are back on the beaches, lifesavers on duty are informed that all is well. On rare occasions bathing is restricted or banned but this is usually due to the annual sardine run and the chances of large captures are to be avoided at all costs so the shark safety gear is removed on a temporary basis. Sardines have already made their presence known this year, with activity off Durban’s main beachfront. Hundreds of dolphins have been seen in the area feeding on the sardines and the bathing status may change from day to day. To keep informed of the sardine activity call the East Coast Radio\KZN Sharks’ Board Sardine Hotline on 083 913 9495. Visits to the KZN Sharks’ Board complex in Umhlanga offer a shark dissection and an informative audiovisual presentation on the activities of the organisation. These programmes are run on a Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at 9am and 2pm. Contact: 031 - 566 0400, www.shark.co.za.
