SWIM ALL YEAR ROUND IN A HEATED POOL!
We offer Solar & Heatpump Pool Heating
Hi Temp offers both the solar and the heat pump varieties. The solar option sells from as little as R4499 for four panels and is ideal for those who don’t mind swimming in water temperatures in the low to mid 20s. The benefit of this option is that there are no running costs. It must, however, have the sun to work. The heat pump option sells for only R8599 for a 3.8kw output. This way of heating a pool is great for those who want to swim all year round in water of 28°C to 32°C. There are minimal running costs involved. The use of a solar blanket with the heat pump is recommended.
WINTER SPECIALS! • 3.8kw Pool Heatpump R8550 installed • 4 Solar Pool Panels from R4499 installed • 4.5kw Geyser Heatpump R9499

Bottom line: Both options will ensure that you get the most out of your swimming pool. It’s hardly worth running the filter pump and using chemicals when no-one wants to use the pool. Heating your pool will mean you get the most out of this wonderful asset. Get your pool heated today, and enjoy ALL the benefits....

Laid Back Life July Book & DVD Reviews FOR CHILDREN: • DVD: Puss in Boots, featuring the voice of Antonio Banderas, is the hugely enjoyable adventure of how the sword fighting kitty went from hero to villain and back to hero again. The film presents a very different take on conventional fairy story characters, such as a rogue Humpty Dumpty, hardened criminals Jack and Jill, and a baby goose that simply can’t stop laying golden eggs. With plenty of action, relationship angst and a comment on what motivates individuals, Puss in Boots is great viewing for young and old. A NuMetro release. • DVD: The Smurfs. Okay so the Smurf family comprises 99 brothers and one girl (Smurfette). They’re ridiculously happy and constantly sing a very irritating song. Despite adult boredom with these little blue creatures, the movie The Smurfs will be loved by young children. The film features a sweet story of how a bunch of Smurfs land up in the human world, chased by the evil (and silly) wizard Gargamel who is bent on capturing their magic for himself, and how they have to get back to their village of mushroom houses. A NuMetro release. • BOOK: On Safari by Nadine Clarke leads young readers through three exciting landscapes – Desert, River and Bushveld. Each section is filled to the brim with explanations on animals, plants and landscapes as well as “Did You Knows”, “Test Your Skills”, “Just for Fun”, things to make, photos and pictures. It is aimed at child adventurers and so gives tips on how to be “bushwise”. This is a book that makes learning exciting and will appeal to youngsters who love the outdoors. Published by Random House Struik. FOR ADULTS: BOOK: • You’re Awesome, Living a Fulfilled Life by Di Smith. Author Di Smith gives advice for different areas of life. She does this in 52 chapters, designed as inspirational readings for every week of the year. Tips include “Enjoy Simple Pleasures”, “Write a Journal” and “Feed Your Family from Your Garden” and contain Di’s first-hand accounts in many of them. Couched in a deep love for South Africa and its people, You’re Awesome also speaks to the concept of Ubuntu and encourages readers to lead more fulfilling lives by transforming their own lives and the lives of those around them. Published by Awesome S.A. Publishing. WIN WIN WIN Mum’s Mail has 1 copy of each book & DVD to give away. Visit www.mumsmail.com to enter or SMS the word “Books” followed by your full name and e-mail address to 45580 at a cost of R1.50 per SMS.

Dad’s Life The Futility of Travelling Abroad With a Teenager My daughter Michaela and I are seasoned travellers. Travel fever starts around March every year. I book two tickets to Rome via Dubai, pay for the tickets and then begin preparations for the trip: • Becoming the Document - Travelling is a transcendental exercise in “becoming the document”. You lock your identity in a leatherette pouch and let the genie out at airport terminals. Leaving nothing to chance, know that teenager passports tend to lose themselves as much as their bearers are trying to find themselves. I use superglue or duct tape to be safe. • Italian Lessons – On her last trip to Rome Michaela told a waiter that she wanted “a spittoon of spaghetti with bald men’s wrinkles” (“un pitale di spaghetti con rughe di pelati”), so a little phrase revision will do away with many potentially obscure pasta sauces. • Terrorist or anti-abduction tactics - Michaela is so travel-prepped she is just short of knowing how to defuse a bomb. She had an airport official in a stranglehold last year when he tried to confiscate her Estée Lauder lip gloss (claiming it was a forbidden fluid). After months of preparations we land in Rome….and she ensconces herself in her hotel room with her laptop, her BlackBerry and room service for two weeks! This year I’ve decided to book us for two weeks into the Louis Botha Avenue Formula One Hotel. It will cost us a tenth of a Roman holiday and the tourist value of a room with a view to taxis hurtling towards Alexandria Township will be exactly the same... By Simon Stengel.

Dad’ss Life Dad London 2012 Paralympics Here We Come! Eddie Bodha, an Umhlanga Physiotherapist, will be accompanying the S.A. Paralympic team when it travels to London in August/September this year to compete in the Paralympics. The Paralympics take place two weeks after the Olympics and Eddie will form part of a team of five physios and two doctors, each of whom will be attached to a specific sporting code (e.g. wheelchair basket ball or goal ball). “I am privileged, honoured and proud to be part of the ultimate experience as a Sports Physiotherapist and really excited,” said Eddie. “I wish I could take my family along. They are always so supportive of me for my achievements but when you are selected you are committed 24/7 to your athletes from the time of your departure to the time you return to S.A.” Eddie’s wife Ashti is also a Physiotherapist and they have an 11 year old son. Eddie qualified as a Physiotherapist (“Medicine was too many years of studying!” he said) and then became involved in sport injury management with Volley Ball S.A. 15 years ago. When he subsequently completed his Masters in Sports Medicine avenues in sporting events began opening up. He worked with wheelchair basket ball athletes at the All Africa Games in Algeria and also travelled with visually impaired athletes to the USA. Moms, get away from it all and let the kids have fun
Moses Mabhida Stadium is Durban’s source of premium entertainment. With a range of activities that impress locals and tourists alike, it is the perfect destination for a fun day’s outing. It therefore comes as no surprise that the stadium and its attractions are so popular.

Since it opened in November 2009, more than 350 000 people have taken a trip in the SkyCar to see the magnificent views of Durban and the beautiful coastline. For those who love a challenge, the 500-step Adventure Walk along the stadium’s arch is equally breathtaking (this is not available to children under the age of 10). The Stadium Tour offers a behind-thescenes look at the building, allowing visitors the chance to view exclusive venues (including the Presidential Suite), an impressive collection of commissioned artworks, the FIFA 2010 World Cup Pitch and the players’ change rooms.

Those (over the age of 10) who are particularly adventurous will love the Big Swing, which is undoubtedly the stadium’s most daring activity and a one-of-a-kind, unforgettable experience. The stadium also provides the opportunity to relax at its great restaurants and interesting shops. Visitors can take a leisurely ride on their bicycles around the stadium and to the beach, or have a picnic on the rolling green lawns at People’s Park.

My sister and I visited for a night’s stay and had the pleasure of experiencing Carrie and Luke’s wonderful hospitality. After settling into our room we went downstairs to join our hosts for some chill-out time and cheese and wine. The next morning we enjoyed a cup of coffee on our quaint little balcony off our room, relaxing whilst watching some Sunbirds about their morning rituals and taking in the beauty of the splendid large garden with amazing palms and pool. Carrie prepared a scrumptious English breakfast of fruit, yoghurt and yummy croissants followed by eggs, bacon, mushrooms and tomatoes.
Set on a small working farm in the Boston Valley, we can accommodate up to 30 guests in our fully equipped self-catering cottages. All cottages have fully fitted kitchens, televisions, braais, etc. We offer an abundance of activities on the farm to keep the children amused, such as bass fishing, canoeing, pony rides, tubing, swimming and interacting with the farmyard animals. Come with your family and friends and relax in our “little bit of heaven”. For a value for money break-away in the country, please contact Noel Mclean on 072 259 2083 or email info@elvesida.co.za

There is virtually no limit to the design possibilities in today’s styling, texture, colour and value when it comes to carpeting. Carpets not only feel soft, but they give a soft look to any room. The biggest advantage is the comfort carpets offer, making it softer to stand, walk, sit or lie on. Carpets are also safe (non-slip surface underfoot for children and the elderly), and provide better insulation (the dense pile of a carpet and its backing layer acts as a heat insulators). And did you know that carpets actually fend off allergies? According to the German Allergy and Asthma Society (DAAB), using “smooth”, hard flooring markedly increases the risk of finding an increased fine dust load in indoor Viv Kuttner: 083 440 3221 www.spaupyourlife.com/viv rooms, while using fitted carpets minimises this risk. The dust trapping properties of carpeting therefore makes them more hygienic than other floor coverings. We joined GNLD in November 1989 and the second income has been a great blessing. We have been fortunate in being able to travel to Britain a few times to meet up with relations or to visit various places and also to Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Penang and Thailand with our family and the Vision Group. We have travelled locally and overseas nearly every year since joining GNLD. We have made lasting friendships and are grateful for the opportunity that this business has given us. The products are top class and have proved a benefit health wise and economically.” Lesley is a member of the Gateway BNI Chapter which meets weekly at the Durban North Hypermarket. “The reason I still attend after three years,” Lesley explained, “is that I get regular orders for my products. Some are repeats and every time I have had an opportunity to speak at length at the meetings I get a new customer. BNI has certainly provided a steady stream of income.” Currently, Lesley is a visitor host which means she welcomes guests, makes them feel at home and gives them information. Susan Abro, a Durban attorney, has been selected as a finalist in the legal category of this year’s CEO Magazine’s Most Influential Women in Business and Government. Over 280 nominees were initially chosen for the awards and after the first round of judging Susan was chosen as one of only three women in the legal category. “I was surprised,” said Susan when she heard of the nomination, “and overwhelmed. And to now be a finalist is a great compliment.” Winners will be announced at the end of July. Susan is a senior attorney specialising in family law. She is the current Chair of the Family Law Committee of the Law Society of South Africa and is a member of the International Bar Association. She is known as an activist for women and children’s rights and has dealt with applications in terms of the Hague Convention on Abduction of Children. In 2005 she was appointed by the Judicial Services Commission as a Judge of the Electoral Court. She is a trustee and chairperson of various charities, NGOs and Foundations including the Mazisi Kunene Foundation (First Poet Laureate of S.A.) and the Chaine des Rotisseurs Foundation Trust (which established the Ikusasa School of Cooking for disadvantaged pupils). On the business front Susan is a member of KZN WIB, was chairlady of the Durban Branch of Business Women’s Association of SA in 2010 and was a Director of the Council of Advice Desk for Abused Women. “You can’t just live for yourself,” said Susan of her many community involvements. “As a part of the community I try to make it better in my own small way.” Mum’s Mail wishes Susan everything of the best for the awards.

Delicious Life Holly’s Wholefood Holly’s Wholefood was started with a vision in 2004 by Lisa Bona who at the time was a beauty therapist with a passion for beauty and aromatherapy. She saw the need for gluten-, wheat- and sugar-free products after losing her brother to diabetes and suffering a health challenge of her own. She made the decision to start the business from a small kitchen in her home. After some ups and downs Lisa met a new business partner, a business woman extraordinaire, who has been in business and has a vast background in banking. After a long road of frustrations Lisa felt confident that the relationship could only go from strength to strength.
Dark Chocolate and Coffee Torte
• 200g dark chocolate, chopped • 15ml strong black coffee • 15ml brandy or rum • 150g castor sugar • 150g butter • 100g ground almonds • 5 eggs, separated • Icing sugar for dusting Preheat oven to 180ºC. Line the base of a 22cm round spring form cake tin with baking paper. Melt chocolate, coffee, liquor, castor sugar and butter over low heat. Add nuts and mix well. Allow to cool slightly. Beat in egg yolks, one by one and mix well after each addition. Pour into prepared tin and bake for around 45mins. Allow cake to cool in the tin. Turn out onto serving platter and serve upside down. Dust with icing sugar vefore serving. This and other recipes available in the CHOC Cookbook (Only R120!)
“It is wonderful to finally have a partner who shares my enthusiasm and passion for what this business and its products can achieve by adding value for those suffering from allergy intolerances and diabetes,” said Lisa. The new owners of Holly’s Wholefood include Debbie Jones, a wellrecognised name in business, and Renee Noome from Port Elizabeth. They are complemented by a committed team of nine staff, headed by “Phindi” Ndwandwe who is well acquainted with the company’s range of 40 products. Lisa confirmed that her biggest reward has been to receive many calls over the years from customers telling her how much they have enjoyed the products. The continual effort to make her food tasty and reasonably priced has paid off. Holly’s Wholefood products can be purchased at selected stores in KZN (Spar, Food Lovers’ Markets, selected health stores and Dischem Pharmacies).

Delicious Life Cooking Cooks Mum’s Mail staff spent a team building morning at Cooking Cooks in Westville recently – and what fun the day turned out to be! “I found the experience thoroughly enjoyable – Debbie has a wonderful kitchen with a view to die for! I was surprised at how easy the various dishes were to prepare and make. I’m definitely going to give them a bash at home...confidently unsupervised...!” Bev Delew (Sales). “After my husband told me my cooking was ‘bland’ many years ago, I gave it up. It was therefore with some trepidation that I went along for the cooking team build for Mum’s Mail at Cooking Cooks – heaven forbid I become good at cooking - I may have to start making meals for the family again! Debbie’s relaxed style of teaching and ability to include everyone during the lesson was very successful. Everyone was given a turn to knead or chop, slice or dice, stir or squash etc. The result was the most delicious Pizza and Foccacia (made from homemade dough that ‘moi’ kneaded); Scotch Eggs (mine was sans pork); Blue Cheese Pasta and Apple Crumble. All very delish and surprisingly simple to do. Highly recommended for a corporate team build, or as a kids’ party, or even a wine/book club dinner idea?!” Alice Leah (Editor). Home Life How to Pay your Bond Faster Many homeowners aren’t aware that even a small additional payment into their home loan account every month can make a big difference. If you have a 20year bond of R500 000 at an interest rate of 12.5%, and you increase your bond repayment by just R300 a month, you could pay off your bond almost four years earlier and save more than R200 000 in interest, for example. Given the difficult economic conditions, however, many homeowners find their budgets stretched to the limit and should rather focus on saving on interest until the tides change. In order to fast-track the repayment of your home loan with the aim of saving on interest, homeowners should try to secure the best possible interest rate on their loan.

Every 0.5% reduction in the interest rate on a home loan of R1 million represents an interest saving of more than R85 000 on a 20-year bond. Those homeowners who have a good track record in making their bond repayments in full on time should contact their bank to negotiate a better interest rate, or even consider switching from one institution to another to obtain a lower rate.

La Lucia Mall, together with Buxtons La Cave Liquors, proudly hosted the La Lucia Mall Fine Wine Privé on 31 May. La Lucia Mall was abuzz with guests of discerning taste, all wanting to savour the wines showcased by 50 of South Africa’s top wine estates, as well as wine makers of distinction. La Lucia Mall Centre Manager Vanessa Blevins said, “The objective of the Wine Privé was multi-faceted. La Lucia Mall, together with Buxton’s La Cave Liquors, wanted to acknowledge all their valued clients, VIP shoppers and supporting businesses in and around Umhlanga and the Ridge, whose loyal support has resulted in our success. We also wanted to host an exclusive event showcasing the best of South African wines and to highlight the very real plight of Africa’s Rhino by raising funds for the Celebrate Life 2012 group and the TUSK Foundation.” Celebrate Life 2012 is a group of ten women, all from Durban, who participated in the Safaricom Marathon in Kenya in June this year. Their aim was to raise awareness and funds for our Rhinos which are massively under threat. A total of R13 300 was raised on the evening from the sale of raffle tickets and will be donated to the TUSK foundation. By purchasing a raffle ticket guests stood the chance of winning one of four cases comprising a selection of superb wines from the estates showcased at the event and valued at more than R3000. In addition to the wines being sponsored, local Game Ranger and Photographer Lyle Gregg donated a framed black and white canvas photograph of a Rhino as an additional prize.

Mental Health Awareness Mental Illness Myths
Lindsay Mackay
Even in today’s advanced world, there’s still much misunderstanding and stigma surrounding mental illness. Many of us are quick to dismiss people with mental illness as inferior or wonder why they can’t just snap out of it. Many of us also rarely believe that mental illness merits the same understanding as medical illnesses such as diabetes, cancer or heart disease.

Myth: Having a mental illness means you’re weak. Fact: Having a mental illness has nothing to do with strength, and it can’t be willed away. Think of it this way: Would you expect someone to will away their diabetes? Myth: Anyone who behaves erratically is “bipolar” or “borderline”. Fact: Bipolar disorder and borderline personality disorder are complex biopsychosocial disorders that can usually be successfully managed through a combination of psychotherapy and medication. Myth: People with a mental illness don’t lead productive lives. Fact: People with a mental illness who receive treatment with therapy and medication can live full, enjoyable and productive lives. Many high-profile people have struggled with mental illness, including Harrison Ford, Halle Berry and Terry Bradshaw.
Lifeline is offering a Personal Growth (19 Jul – 20 Sep) & Counselling Skills (4 Oct – 22 Nov) course every Thur morning or evening. This course takes you on a journey of self-discovery, if you feel there is room for improvement in your relationships and want to become a Life Line Counsellor. Booking is essential, closing date is Fri, 2 Jul. Contact 031 - 303 1344. Lifeline also offers a 10 day HIV/AIDS class - the next intake is 13 - 24 Aug. Booking is essential.
Myth: Having a parent with mental illness guarantees you’ll struggle, too. Fact: Though you may inherit a predisposition to certain mental illnesses, you may never suffer the symptoms, and there are preventative measures you can take. Some of these measures include: the ability to effectively identify emotions, communicate well, cope with stress and participate in physical activities. Myth: Alcoholism and substance abuse are the result of poor lifestyle choices. Fact: Addiction is a disease. It’s a biological, genetically-based disorder. Its hallmark is progressive use in the face of adverse consequences. By Margarita Tartakovsky, M.S.Source: SADAG.

How does neurofeedback work? Sensors are placed on the patient’s scalp and ears to record the electrical activity of the brainwaves. The brain waves are converted into signals which are sent to the clinician’s computer. A picture of the brain’s electrical activity (i.e., EEG) is displayed on the clinician’s computer. In the meantime, the patient sits at a second computer that displays a game or other programmes. It is the patient’s brain waves that start and play the game. If the patient is not in the right brain wave the game does not work. Hence, the brain always looks for the right brain wave, length in order to get the programme to work properly. Neurofeedback works on the positive reward principle. The brain remembers the positive feeling of the new, beneficial brain wave form and is able to reproduce it in everyday life situations. Thus symptoms disappear. Clinical research shows that neurofeedback training has an up to 80% success rate in reducing symptoms of ADHD/ADD, depression, anxiety, PTSD, insomnia, concentration problems, stress reduction, migraines, phobias and panic attacks.

Healthy Life The Lung Wellness Clinic Whenever my son had a cold it seemed to affect his chest resulting in coughing, wheezing/rattling and laboured breathing. On two occasions he was hospitalised and placed on a nebuliser to ease the symptoms. Although he clearly had infections on those occasions, even when he didn’t have a temperature he seemed to struggle with his breathing occasionally. Visits to a paediatrician showed that he also had allergies, but nothing overly concerning and I assumed that he was just susceptible to lung infections and bought a nebuliser for home use. When I heard about Lindsay van der Linden and her Lung Wellness Clinic in Durban North, I decided to take him in for an assessment. With various computerised tests using a peak flow metre and short trials on a bronchodilator (dilates the bronchi and bronchioles, decreasing resistance in the respiratory airway and increasing airflow to the lungs) Lindsay was able to accurately measure his lung function, gauge the results of the medication and diagnosed him as being mildly asthmatic. The most important issue for me was having a concrete diagnosis and being able to treat it accordingly with expert advice from a specialist. Even mild asthma, if not treated early, can lead to long term damage of the small airways from inflammation caused by certain asthma triggers such as allergies. Lindsay diagnosed the problem and prescribed a course of treatment which will benefit my son significantly in years to come. If you suspect your child has asthma, allergies affecting breathing or even a wheezy chest, go and see Lindsay and give your child a fighting chance. Healthy Life Infections during Pregnancy
DESHNI PILLAY Audiologist & Speech Therapist P.R. No. 0327492
* Speech Therapy * Hearing Tests * Hearing Aids
In about 25% of cases of hearing loss there is a non-genetic cause that can be identified. Non-genetic hearing loss is most often caused by illness or trauma before birth or during the birth process. Older infants and young children can also develop non-genetic hearing loss due to illness or trauma. Some viral infections are known to be associated with hearing loss. These infections carry the highest risk of causing hearing loss if the mother has the illness during pregnancy or passes the infection to her baby during the birth process. • German Measles/Rubella - A respiratory disease caused by a virus, resulting in a rash and fever for a few days. It is spread by contact with an infected person, through coughing and sneezing. Rubella vaccine (contained in MMR vaccine) can prevent this disease, but do not have this vaccine if you are currently pregnant. • Toxoplasmosis - A parasitic disease caused by the protozoan Toxoplasma gondii. The parasite spreads by ingestion of infected meat or the faeces of an infected cat, or by transmission from mother to foetus. Congenital toxoplasmosis is a special form in which an unborn child is infected via the placenta. • Congenital syphilis - Syphilis present in utero and at birth, and occurs when a child is born to a mother with secondary syphilis.

• Genetic factors - If a parent or sibling has the condition, there is a high likelihood Dr Nazeer N. This is proven by the fact that it occurs commonly in middle-aged females and is aggravated in pregnancy.

Treatment: The most important aspect of treatment is photoprotection and photoavoidance. The patient must avoid peak hours i.e. between 10am and 2pm. A broad brimmed hat must be used at all times. A broad spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 must be used. There are many lightening creams that may be used. These include topical mulberry extracts, mushroom derivatives, liquorice products as well as hydroquinone based preparations. It is important to take note that these are not “quick fix” solutions, but lighten pigmentation over time. Other treatments include chemical peels, microdermabrasion and laser treatment. Healthy Life Skin Doctor Q&A Question: “My son has been diagnosed with eczema. Please give me more information and explain why cortisone and steroid creams are not good to use.” (S. Rijsmus). Answer: Eczema is a chronic inflammatory dermatitis of the skin characterised by redness, itching, dryness or weeping in areas such as joints, face and body. It is often due to a genetic predisposition to atopy i.e. family history of asthma, hay fever, sinusitis etc. It may start as young as two months of age and may ease by adolescence or continue into adulthood. Treatment starts with using good daily skincare like glycerine soap and dermatological emollients and avoiding any potential allergens like dust mite, preservatives and colourants in foods etc. Specific food allergies may not always play a role. Medicated creams are used to treat the inflammation. Steroid (cortisone) creams are the mainstay of treatment for eczema. If these creams are used appropriately, i.e. the correct strength of cream for the age of the patient and location of the eczema, and if they are used for a limited duration, then there are no side effects. Steroid-free medicated creams (called topical calcineurin inhibitors) are now also available and these have specific uses and indications. They complement steroid creams but do not replace them. Oral antihistamines are used to treat the itch symptoms and occasionally antibiotics are used if there is infection present.

Healthy Life Boost Your Metabolism
Jane van der Merwe
Continued weight gain, fatigue and being stuck with unwanted fat stores are often caused by a slow metabolism. Metabolism is the rate at which each person’s body consumes energy or burns calories. Your metabolism can decline because of age, weight, hormones, stress, diet and amount of exercise you do. A slow metabolism is not permanent and can be changed! Here are some tips on how to boost your metabolism:
MTech. Hom A7568
For assessment and management of general health conditions. Homoeopathic and herbal medication. 8am - 2pm, Mon - Fri 078 017 4787 34 Beachway, Durban North
Diet: • Eat foods that help balance your blood sugar level and promote healthy energy levels. Foods that help increase metabolism include grapefruit, lemon, lean proteins, low fat dairy, hot peppers and chillies. • When you eat five meals a day your body starts to expect food and in turn burns energy quicker instead of conserving it. • Make sure you eat breakfast soon after waking up. You need to break your body’s starvation mode and wake it with a nourishing meal. Eating breakfast kick starts your metabolism. Choose lean or low fat proteins and low G.L. carbohydrates e.g. oats with cinnamon, seeds and skim milk; a low fat yoghurt with raisin-free muesli; smoked salmon or lean ham with low G.L. toast. • Drink water (eight glasses per day). • Drink herbal tea to give you an energy boost without the jitters of other stimulants. Exercise: The more lean muscle mass you have, the higher your metabolic rate. Muscle needs more energy to function than fat does. Weight training is a great way to shape up and boost lean muscle. Aerobics, dancing, running, fast-paced walking, cycling, swimming and squash speed up your metabolism for four to eight hours after you stop exercising. Supplements: Use supplements that are specially formulated to boost metabolism. Source: Joelene Brown, Herbalife, 084, 410 0633, info@trimbody.co.za.

Healthy Life You Could Feel and Look Better… Do any of these describe the way you feel: tired/lacking in energy and enjoyment; irritable; disturbed sleep; low libido, vaginal dryness; erectile dysfunction; dry skin; brittle nails; depressed or anxious; aches and pains; cannot lose weight; sugar or salt cravings; hot flushes, night sweats; headaches; muscle loss; thinning skin; hair loss and many more…? Lack of health and happiness is called dis-ease. Dis-ease is caused by aspects of our lives that are “out of sync”. These aspects are usually more than one of the following: poor diet, food allergies, digestive bacteria that are out of balance (dysbiosis), poor detoxification, hormone imbalance, low levels of inflammation, prolonged stress, lack of exercise, insufficient good quality sleep, genetic makeup, inappropriate lifestyle, the thoughts we think - in fact everything that makes us human. Recent research shows that “lack of wellness” issues that have been given labels such as ADHD, depression, PMS, migraines, ageing etc. are the result of imbalances in several areas of our lives. The research also shows that they can be managed without serious drugs. To be free of dis-ease you need to create harmony by: • Balancing all systems in your body – hormones, digestion, nutrition and detoxification. • Avoiding what does not work with your body. • Maintaining a healthy diet and lifestyle. Where to start? Have a proper assessment done by a certified integrative health practitioner. Then you and your healthcare professional develop a programme to get your body and life back on track. Most medical aids will cover the cost of consultations. Contact: Dr Hennie Palm 031 – 464 4458, www.giant-within.com.
“Child not coping”? ADD/ADHD? You not coping? • 3 – 7% of children and 1 – 6% of adults suffer from ADHD • No two people who suffer from ADHD are alike • Treatment of choice to date: Stimulants such as Ritalin • Stimulants treat only the symptoms and cause serious side effects There are other treatment options available without the side effects and with better results. Book right now to have an assessment done by a certified integrative health practitioner. Then together develop a programme to manage ADHD. Most medical aids will cover the costs of your consultations.

Beautiful Life Spa-Valous Massage Candles Spa-Valous massage candles melt into a warming, sensual massage oil and daily moisturiser. They contain all-natural oils including soy oil, coconut oil, shea butter and Vitamin E – all of which leave the skin soft and smooth. The natural soy candles are non-toxic, petroleum free, lightweight and eco-friendly. They burn longer and cleaner, are 100% natural/vegan and are absorbed quickly into the skin. For daily use: Light candle prior to taking a shower or bath. Once finished, apply to towel-dried skin. Enjoy the aromatherapy benefits and soft-feeling skin. For massage: Apply to skin and enjoy the glide of a professional massage oil. Great on legs, dry arms, cracked elbows, knees, finger knuckles, cuticles, heels and calloused portions of the foot, back and shoulders or anywhere for a soothing massage. After you light the Spa-Valous Massage Candle, let it burn till you have a pool of warm essential oil. Extinguish the flame and just pour the warm oil on the area you want to massage it into. The Spa-Valous soy candle burns a whole lot cooler than paraffin, so it’s very soothing and does not burn the skin. And if you happen to be somewhere where you can’t light the SpaValous Massage Candle to warm the wax the soy wax is soft enough to just scoop some out with your finger. Simple secret pleasures are so nice to find and this is certainly one of them. Try it, you will love it. The candles are available in Durban. Beautiful Life Essentially You Skin and Body Care In the peaceful suburb of Mt Edgecombe is the home-from-home beauty salon, Essentially You Skin and Body Care. Owned and run by Robyn McGregor, Essentially You gives clients treatments in a homebased environment, close to nature and far from the buzz of busy city life. Robyn’s main focus is on natural, organic skin care. This is done in an effort to minimise the use of artificial ingredients and their potentially harmful effects on the body. Robyn’s clients began showing a concern for products that contained ingredients that could cause cancers. And so, after careful research, Robyn settled on two skin care ranges, both of which are free from parabens (chemicals used in preservatives), mineral oils, petrochemicals, silicones and genetically modified ingredients. The two skin care ranges she uses are Dr Hauschka and RVB. Dr Haushka is a certified organic product and employs a unique technique in its facials consisting of lymph stimulation using natural organic facial brushes. Bliss for the skin! RVB is a holistic range imported from Italy which has active ingredients that are also organic. For that special type of person who looks to nature to care for their skin these treatments are especially for you. Robyn also does waxing and specialises in Swedish and Sports Massages. She carries a basic range of products for purchase and will order in if further products are required. Contact: Robyn, Essentially You Skin and Body Care, 031 – 502 6256, 072 288 2773.

Beautiful Life Sexy Tips! Chantelle from The Nail Guru invited me to enjoy a Minx experience at her salon which is situated at 39 Umhlanga Rocks Drive, inside Docnor Centre, in Durban North. Not having a clue what a “Minx” experience was, despite having seen her very joosh pink and silver leopard print toenails, I went along to her salon last week for my Minx. WOW, WOW, WOW! Minx is a very clever concept which consists of stickers that are placed on your finger or toe nails, in any design of your choice (I opted for regular leopard print with a little black and silver bling). They are fitted to your unique nail shape and then are bonded to the nail by using a heat lamp - similar to a gel nail procedure. I was very comfy throughout the Minx pedicure, as I sat on a massage bed while Shane beautified my toes. I love (!!!) the end result and Chantelle has advised that it can last up to six weeks - what a win! I will simply have to ditch my winter boots in favour of pretty sandals so I can show off my sexy, Minx toes.

Beautiful Life Keep Smelling Fresh Would you rub aluminum chloride on your body? How about aluminum hydroxybromide? Each morning most of us do - every time we apply our deodorant! These chemicals are some of the many commonly used in deodorants. But there is an alternative to smearing chemicals under our arms each morning. The offensive odour we normally refer to as sweat is as a result of our diet and an imbalance of anaerobic bacteria (Staphylococcus Auras, a carbon-dioxide-driven bacteria), not perspiration as such. By allowing good bacteria to do its job, by not using chemically laden deodorants and medicated soaps, we would not smell offensive. Many bacteria are helpful, and the skin has its own ability to protect the body from the bad ones. Synthetic, chemical antibacterial soaps indiscriminately kill all germs and disrupt the delicate balance of micro-flora that is necessary for healthy skin. Preservatives and synthetic fragrances often also irritate sensitive skin. Natural deodorant keeps you feeling and smelling fresh all day and is ideal for those with sensitive skins. They do not contain aluminium, parabens or synthetic fragrances. As with many truly organic products, the switchover to an organic deodorant requires an adaptation stage for some people but not for all. Initially, some may need to use their deodorant two or three times a day for four to six weeks in order to keep smelling fresh and allow the body and skin to adjust. Swapping your chemically based soaps for good quality, natural soap is also a good idea. Contact: Isabelle Klusener, Beauty By Nature, isabelle.klusener@gmail.com. Beautiful Life Clothe Yourself at JAM this Winter Since opening their first store in Durban in 1998, JAM has been dedicated to bringing shoppers the best value for the lowest price, and based on the idea that good quality, fashionable clothing does not have to be expensive, they have not stopped growing. This ethos has resulted in JAM becoming the fastest growing valuefor-money chain of clothing stores.

In just 11 years JAM has opened 38 stores, both in KZN and in Gauteng. With 18 stores in KZN, 18 in Gauteng and two in the Free State, JAM has built up a strong brand identity and has a loyal following. The reason for JAM’s incredible value at rock bottom prices is that they buy chain-store overruns and cancellations straight from the manufacturer. Over the years, JAM has built relationships with both local and international manufacturers, who know that they are always on the lookout for the best deal. This system distinguishes JAM as it allows them to do what others cannot – bring their customers real value for a real saving. It is with this top quality clothing that they are able to attract people of different ages and backgrounds through their doors. This makes JAM “famous for less”.

Beautiful Life Goodbye Waxing... Hello Sugaring!
Zamangwane Wellness Centre
When given the opportunity to avoid pain and have my hair removal (legs, bikini and underarm) needs seen to, quickly and pain free, with no sticky wax residue on my clothes or me, I simply couldn’t resist! Although sugaring has been in S.A. since 2007, very few salons in Durban offer it. The product is natural, hygienic, safe, effective, chemical free, non sticky, works on all hair types (including fine and stubborn hair), is suitable for both sexes, for all body parts (face, brows, lips, beard, head, ears, back, neck, shoulders, chest, arms, legs, feet, bikini and Brazilian), can be used on children 11 years and older. It is gentle, far less painful than wax, exfoliates the skin (removes dormant, ingrown hairs) and slows hair growth. In the long term you save money and time compared to waxing. Sugaring needs to be done only once a month/six weeks and the more often you do it, the longer it takes for hair to grow back.

It’s important to go to a professional who uses the Alexandria body sugaring product only. Vani and Portia of Mobile Beauty explain everything beforehand. They show you the product in its raw form, they wear gloves and throw the end product away in front of you (it is never recycled). To save time, both ladies can work on you together. Tiny Life Breastfeeding-Friendly Hospitals in S.A. Choosing a non-mother/baby-friendly hospital to give birth in, can have lifelong implications for your baby’s health! And now, according to the recent Tshwane Declaration of Support for Breastfeeding in South Africa, ALL public and Private Hospitals are to be Mother/Baby Friendly accredited by 2015! This means that all hospitals in S.A. need to implement and follow the ten steps to successful breastfeeding according to the Baby Friendly Health Initiative (BFHI). The BFHI was developed jointly by the World Health Organisation and UNICEF in 1991 and is a global effort to promote, protect and support breastfeeding through The Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding for Hospitals.

The Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding for hospitals are: • Have a written breastfeeding policy and routinely communicate this to staff. • Train staff to implement this policy. • Inform all pregnant women about the benefits and management of breastfeeding. • Help mothers initiate breastfeeding within one hour of birth. • Show mothers how to breastfeed and how to maintain lactation, even if they are separated from their babies. • Give newborn infants no food or drink other than breastmilk, unless medically indicated. • Allow mothers and infants to remain together 24 hours a day, “roomingin”. • Encourage breastfeeding on cue, whenever baby is hungry. • Give no dummies/pacifiers or artificial teats to breastfeeding babies (causes nipple confusion). • Refer mothers to breastfeeding support groups on discharge. The start that you and your baby have can make the world of difference to your baby’s health for life, so encourage the hospital of your choice to become babyfriendly!

Tiny Life Toddler Fears The orderly and familiar course of everyday life gives the two year old child a feeling of security. He is still very rigid and inflexible and does not like sudden big changes in his life. A move to a different house or another town can be very upsetting for the pre-schooler. His concept of the world is still incomplete and very uncertain and he clings to familiar elements. His inflexible behaviour is therefore his way of resisting the upheaval in his already uncertain world. The two year old is still very wary of strange situations and sometimes also develops particular fears. Common fears are fear of the dark or being alone. He is still scared of being taken away from his mother and when left with strangers he is scared that she will not fetch him again.
“The gentle approach to baby swimming“ “Opening the door of water fun and swimming excellence to everyone“
Certain fears are acquired. If the mother has a strong fear of something it may transfer indirectly to the pre-schooler. For example, she does not have to say that she is scared of dogs. Her attitude and behaviour tell the child how she feels about dogs. Some parents use threats as a form of discipline. This can cause fears. “If you don’t listen now I’m going to lock you up alone in a dark room”, “I am going to call the doctor to come and give you an injection”, “The police are waiting just outside the door to take you away,” are but a few of the cruel threats given by parents to their young children. This method of disciplining is totally unacceptable and will only serve to overload the already uncertain child with more unnecessary fears.

Young Life Parents Disturb Sleep Paediatricians report the two biggest causes of concern mothers bring to a consultation in their baby’s first few years of life are feeding and sleep problems. In new research it was found that depressed mums wake their babies for no reason at night, resulting in worse sleep habits over time. Meg Faure, Occupational Therapist and co-author of Baby Sense, says, “We have known for years that there is a relationship between postnatal depression and sleep problems in babies but many thought that high levels of sleep deprivation resulted in lowered mood for the mother and increased anxiety. The latest research, however, indicates the opposite - that anxious and depressed mums in fact disturb their baby’s sleep.” Researchers at Penn State set up cameras to record mothers’ movements at night and found that not only did depressed mothers over respond to every sound their baby made, they actually disturbed and even woke their babies and spent more time with their infants at night. This adds to the body of knowledge that highlights the negative impact of postnatal depression (PND). At the 2012 Johnson’s Baby Sense Seminars, medical professionals will look at sleep, STUDIO PORTRAITS feeding, child development and even & OUTDOOR baby’s health. Parents will be equipped PHOTOGRAPHY with tools to help their babies sleep better and feed well. There will be two practical Various workshops - the Johnson’s Baby Massage Packages workshop and Hipp Organic Weaning to Available Feeding workshop. The Johnson’s Baby Sense Seminar takes place on 18 August 082 560 7705 at the Riverside Hotel, Durban. Cost: R260 www.tarakelly.co.za per session for the seminar and R120 per session for the workshops. Contact: 021 - 461 4669, babysense@go4word.co.za, www.babysense.com. Young Life Brain Food for Exams
New club opening with HEATED POOL at Crawford North Coast in July!
Learners need specific nutrients to keep their bodies functioning optimally on a day-to-day basis to encourage growth and development. This is even more important during exam time as proper nutrition helps facilitate the learning process. Small, regular meals help maintain stable blood sugar levels, which provides a constant supply of glucose to the brain – essential for concentration and problem solving when children are preparing for exams.
CRAWFORD NORTH COAST & GLENASHLEY PREP

Recognising the importance of nutrition for optimum brain function, Woolworths hosted dietician-led Moms’ Store Tours to give parents the opportunity to learn more about healthy meal options for learners during exam time. I attended the tour at Woolworths La Lucia recently and was very impressed. Visitors were split into a number of groups and assigned a dietician each. The dieticians first gave a little presentation to their groups about the importance of Low G.I. and Omega 3 rich foods as “brain food”. Then, each group followed their dietician around the store and looked at products that matched the criteria mentioned earlier. Afterwards we got to taste snacks prepared with the foods described. I have already implemented some of the tips recommended for my children (breakfast importance, lunchbox and healthy snack ideas). The Moms’ Store Tours are part of the Woolworths Educational Programme for primary schools, which helps teachers and parents teach Grade 4 learners in some 1600 schools about nutrition, healthy living and caring for the environment. Tours are open to customers, parents of learners from participating schools, as well as the general public. For more information or to book your place on a Woolworths Moms’ Store Tour near you, contact amandamhluzi@woolworths.co.za. Review by Brenda Daniels for Mum’s Mail.

Young Life Hooligans Kids’ Clothing Children bring out the fun in us, our mad sides. Whilst we are not sure whether this is purely from a lack of sleep and our sanity, it is nevertheless a good idea to embrace it. “If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em!” Hooligans Kids’ Clothing was borne when founder, Adri Jeffers, found herself watching a pair of raucous twins causing mayhem in her once quiet life. The family business has since expanded and now exports clothing to other countries. A recent development is that Hooligans Kids’ Clothing has joined the online store revolution. Readers are invited to join other Hooligans fans at www.hoolies.co.za. Young Life Beesting Meets Beatrice Beetle
Monumental Music School
Guitar and Piano Lessons
“Come children, Beesting...here we are!” Lolla stood on the river’s edge waving while Losh opened a basket next to her. Beesting gave one look and then a loud WAUF. He was so excited. He knew that the basket could mean only one thing – food! He definitely forgot lesson one taught by the Wise River. Can you still remember? “Come now – it’s time to rest and eat,” said Lolla. Needless to say everyone stopped in their tracks and spun around. They couldn’t get to the edge of the river quick enough. Beesting had also sadly forgotten lesson two taught by the Wise River and he had to be at Lolla’s side first, yet again. “Wow, you’ve all been having such a great time running through the forest and splashing in the river. Losh and I just couldn’t keep up with you guys. At one stage we thought you might get lost.” Beesting and the kids from Thinta all exchanged a secretive glance. They knew what Lolla and Losh didn’t know. Artine the Forest princess butterfly had helped them. That is why they hadn’t got lost.

Everyone was enjoying the nice things to eat when Lolla asked with concern, “Saffy, what happened to your knee?” It had a big red scratch. Beesting pretended not to hear. Then he heard a loud ZZZZZZZZZttttttttWWWWWW!! He tried to shake it off but couldn’t. Something was buzzzzzzzing in his right ear and he heard a not-so-friendly voice saying, “Beesting – it’s time for you to listen and not just hear. Follow me to the tree of much hearing and little listening. My name is Beatrice Beetle and I am the keeper of the forest.”

Young Life The Really Green Grocer The Really Green Grocer is an online store with a mission to bring you products that are: safe, environmentally friendly, ethical, high in quality and value for money. Alice Leah (Editor) and Nicola Coskey (of Naturals Beauty) reviewed two products: Pure Beginnings Baby Shampoo and Body Wash with Baobab. “I could not wait to try the Pure Beginnings Baby Shampoo and Body Wash with Baobab on my 14 week old daughter. I was delighted with the wonderful aroma of the baobab, lavender and geranium and with the calming effect it had on little Morgan. She had mild cradle cap, but it disappeared after only three washes! The gel, with vitamin C and anti-oxidants, forms a very soft non-foamy wash that leaves baby’s skin feeling smooth, velvety and soft. This product is a must for all new moms and I will definitely keep on using this as baby gets bigger. The 200 ml bottle sells for R70 and will last a long time. I am sold after six washes.” Nicola Coskey. Children’s Berry Flavoured Toothpaste. “My kids loved it! The flip top cap makes it easier to keep the tube closed and prevent caps going AWOL. It contains xylitol not sugar, which is healthy and avoids the sickly sweet flavour of traditional kids’ toothpastes – the berry flavour is very subtle. Because it is fluoride free it is safe to swallow, it’s suitable for babies and children of all ages, so helps develop the good habit of regular tooth brushing from very young.” Alice Leah.

Young Life Durban Friends of Adoption
1000 Animals / Birds!
As a new adoptive single Mom and, at the time, new to Durban, I had few local family and friends and realised how vital it would be to find our own community, where we could belong. With no adoption support groups in existence then, my enthusiastic social worker and I made a list of about 30 families. I phoned each individually and was delighted to instantly connect with some of the friendliest people I’ve ever met. They were quick to respond to my invitation to meet, they were encouraging and full of good advice – just the sort of friends I’d hoped to find in the group I was now growing. We began to meet up, and rotated the venues in and around Durban. We’d meet where the younger children could play happily, and where the toddlers would be safe if they went “exploring”. The parents chatted and shared stories and encouragement. Now, nearly five years later, strong bonds of friendship have developed.

Educated Life Noo Noo Bugs Playschool
HAMPTONS PRIMARY SCHOOL
Noo Noo Bugs Playschool is a beautifully appointed homef r o m h o m e school in the heart of Durban North. Designed as a bridge between home and the pre-school, Noo Noo Bugs is suitable for children aged + 20 months to three years. Nikki Mitchell, owner of Noo Noo Bugs, is a qualified teacher and has experience with teaching and au pairing. As the name suggests, everything at Noo Noo Bugs is designed for the very little child - from colour-co-ordinated cubbyholes, picket fencing, tables, chairs and logos, to playground equipment designed for the very young. The bright, airy and delightful environment is completely safe, securely situated off the road and away from a protected swimming pool. The school runs from 7.15am to 12.45pm Monday to Friday during government school terms. It will suit mums who work from home or housewives who just need a little time to themselves in the mornings. Mums are welcome to stay with their children when they first start at Noo Noo Bugs to ease them into their new environment. Two healthy snacks are provided every morning and routine activities like ring time, reading, singing, learning colours and the alphabet, and playing with Smile Educational Toys are interspersed with bouts of free play – so important for young children. Nikki will take a maximum of only eight children, thus ensuring that each little “bug” is given lots of loving attention. Nikki is ably assisted by two experienced maids/childcare minders.

Educated Life Sibling Rivalry Nothing frays our nerves or pushes up our blood pressure quite like bickering and arguing in the back seat of the car. Children calling each other names, pushing, kicking and biting or hitting each over the TV remote can send you round the bend. Children seem to have an unlimited capacity for disagreement. There are numerous reasons for this state of utter parental despair. Different temperaments, attention or approval seeking and fatigue can all contribute. Siblings are not discerning when it comes to issues to fight over. Anything and everything will do and this in turn has a radical impact on the entire family. What is comforting to know, however, is that some conflict is regarded as beneficial for their development. If children were never involved in disagreements, they would never learn how to resolve disputes. Through scrapping with siblings, children learn tenacity, negotiation skills, how to compete, tolerance, compromise, to be assertive, and how to take themselves seriously. These are important skills to have when heading off into the big, wide world and all of its challenges. According to David Attenborough, “A little lion that fights with his brother or sister is more likely to survive in the hostile adult world.” Our children’s continual bickering frays our nerves and often leaves us bewildered and depleted. Take heart – you can take steps to help your children sort out their disagreements and restore peace and tranquillity to the home. Chandre Ezra can help you! Educated Life Waterfall Home School Academy Waterfall Home School Academy is based on a 10-acre property in Hillands Road in Hillcrest. The school was started by Brigitte Smith for children of families who were unable to pay government school fees, were being bullied, or had ADHD or learning disabilities. Fees are kept affordable for full day, 7am – 5pm, and half day, 7am – 1pm. The property has a huge salt pool, a stream running through it and a sandpit (built by the Grade 3s for the younger children!). Babies right up to matriculants are accommodated. At present there are 10 children attending the school. The four year olds can read write, spell and do sums and the children benefit enormously from one-on-one, hands-on teaching. Laptops are used from Grade 4 as part of the learning curriculum. The system used at Waterfall Home School is registered with the department of education and the teachers are known as tutors. The national curriculum and others are used to help make learning fun. A wonderful art and crafts teacher comes every Thursday, a hip-hop teacher comes in to teach on Fridays and swimming is taught twice a week. The school would also like to start growing vegetables with the tunnel system, as well as growing chickens and selling eggs. The school has many ideas and would love to grow into a bigger, better school that is able to help as many children as possible. To contribute to Waterfall Home School’s desperately needed funds or equipment, consider donating old laptops or PCs, stationery and craft material. All help would all be gratefully accepted. Party Life Bugs are Beautiful Party Young children love bugs, right? Well then treat them to a Bugs Birthday party! Here’s how: Invitations: Buy large and small plastic insects and glue the big ones to plain white cards. Write the party details around the insects and place in envelopes. Drop a few smaller bugs into the envelope for an added surprise. Worm Cakes: Make ordinary cupcakes. Decorate with chocolate icing and then sprinkle with flaky chocolate to make the cake look like sand. Add a chewy worm to the top of each. Prizes and Party Packs: Plastic bugs, insect boxes for studying insects, books teaching insect identification. Decorations: Trace insect shapes onto black paper, cut out, stick onto large sheets of white paper and hang on the walls. Scatter plastic/edible insects large and small on the party table, in serviettes and in snack bowls. Hang from the ceiling and place on the floor as well. Make sure the children know the difference between the edible and non-edible ones! Games: • Put some plastic insects outside. Give the children a chart of insect types and get them to spot/identify as many as they can. • Make bug fridge magnets. Provide materials to make ladybirds, beetles, worms or caterpillars. Use felt as the basis for the insects, then get the children to stick pompom bodies, wiggly eyes, pipe cleaner feelers/legs etc onto it. Use magnetic tape to stick on the back and each guest will have a fridge magnet to take home! • Get the children to come dressed as insects (e.g. one-colour outfits stuck with felt spots and a swimming cap with “feelers”). Party Life Bring Your Child’s Imagination to Life! Sharpening your child’s imagination with educational toys at a young age has been proven by researchers to unleash their creative and intellectual potential. Creative thinking has become one of the highly regarded forms of intellect as it demonstrates the ability to solve problems, to create products that do not yet exist, and to find new solutions to old problems. Toby Tower has just launched a new range of activity sets that are flexible enough to allow children to explore their creativity as well as follow a set of instructions in order to produce the final product. This teaches kids how to follow instructions in a subtle manner, thereby ensuring that the experience of following instructions is both fun and rewarding. These sets are a perfect way to keep your children creatively occupied during the upcoming holidays and will make fantastic gifts too! Toby Tower says, “Imagination grows brains”.

Party Life Amla Bats for SMJ SMJ Beverages South Africa recently appointed Hashim Amla, the world’s topranked cricket batsman, as its brand ambassador. The partnership will see Amla promoting all the soft drink brands manufactured in South Africa. The partnership will also include collaboration on future product lines, as well as endorsing the full range of products manufactured by SMJ Beverages S.A. (Pty) Ltd. Ismail Kajee, CEO of this leading global beverage manufacturer in South Africa said, “We are extremely pleased to have Hashim Amla become SMJ’s brand ambassador. SMJ and Hashim share a common, mutual desire to improve people’s lives and contribute to society. In addition to manufacturing truly great soft drinks with a great taste and unique value for money, SMJ Beverages takes to heart our mission to enrich people’s lives through unique corporate activities and to grow our company in unity with society. We look forward to collaborating with Hashim on a number of corporate social responsibility programmes around the country.” Hashim Amla said, “I am honoured, and excited, to have been appointed as the brand ambassador for such a global company. Chubby and Busta are great brands with strong roots in the West Indies, a region known for its relaxed and exciting approach, very much like South Africa.” Based in the West Indies, SM Jaleel & Co Ltd, the parent company of SMJ Beverages SA (Pty) Ltd, has long been a major sponsor of cricket over its 88 year heritage. The company, through its kids’ snack drink brand, Chubby, has made a substantial contribution to the development of youth cricket in the West Indies.

Fossils are extremely useful records of the past. In your case you left behind an impression of an object you own but fossils found by Geologists around the world can date back to the time of dinosaurs. These fossils allow geologists to study what life might have been like millions of years ago and to date the ages of the rocks these fossils are found in. Fossils such as the one you made can leave delicate patterns and a surprising amount of detail. Activity courtesy of:

Sprout It is a business run by Deborah Sutherland that grows and distributes sprouts to individuals and restaurants. It is aimed at encouraging people to grow their own vegetable gardens and thus have more control over what they eat, eliminating the need for preservatives, colourants, pesticides etc. Deborah also runs workshops for children called EcoSmart Kids. Workshops include: Sprouting it for Kids (learning how to sprout seeds and add them to meals), Micro-Greening for Kids (lessons on planting seeds) and My Eco-Box Garden (the last stage of the programme). These workshops have now been extended into children’s parties. This is done in a fun, creative way that gives children an item of great value to take home. is a lovely outdoor children’s venue situated in Assagay. It’s a great place for friends and families to meet. There is a shop, coffee shop and outdoor area for the kids (ages 0 to six) so all ages can be kept occupied. The coffee shop sells cakes, drinks and light meals. A playgarden attracts very young children with its bike track, superb jungle gym and different fantasy playhouses. For inclement weather Lucky Bean also has an indoor playshed equipped with great play things for littlies. The shop sells children’s toys and clothing and other goods made by mums. Parties for children can accommodate fairly large groups for a number of hours at a time (verify with party venue). Party hire includes venue, tables and chairs, linen, crockery, tea and coffee and cleanup. Families are welcome to bring their own party food and party packs but Lucky Bean can arrange this for you if you prefer.

Relaxed Life Pilates for All Pilates is a fun, non high impact way to exercise for all ages, including children, post and pre-pregnancy mothers, athletes, dancers, pensioners etc. Pilates helps to tone and lose centimetres, is good for whole-body fitness, is adaptable to many fitness levels and creates strength without bulk. It develops core strength, good posture and increases energy. Laura-May Louw of Pilates in Motion teaches Pilates from her home-based studio in Musgrave, Durban. She is a BASI-qualified instructor (Body Arts and Science International). I was very pleased to have the chance to attend Laura-May’s advanced class on a Monday evening. The studio is a comfortable room which accommodates eight students – much less intimidating than a large, major gym studio. Laura-May herself is a lovely instructor and sets you at ease at once. We did a lot of work on the roller - a long, foam, circular tube. We lay on it and did several leg raises, all of which engage the core because you have to work to keep the roller steady. We then lay on our tummies and used the roller to exercise our arms – a unique exercise I’d never done before. We even rolled our cellulite-ridden thighs on the roller. Phew, that was painful! After the class I could feel that my whole body had worked out but in a controlled and manageable fashion. I really recommend Pilates in Motion for excellent Pilates instruction. Classes are held on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays 4.15pm and 5.15pm and on Thursdays at 9am (for pensioners). Please phone ahead of time to book your slot.
