Business Life It’s Time to March… Did You Know? In response to an article in the April Mum’s Mail, Susan Abro received a query from a reader, whose partner has two minor children. The ex-husband and father of the children has been in and out of prison on various drug-related crimes, is a confirmed drug addict, cannot work and doesn’t pay maintenance. The father has no contact with the minor children and the partner and new father-figure pays for almost all their expenses. The eldest child asked the new father-figure if they could call him Dad. It was agreed that the children could. Susan addresses three ensuing issues: • Minor children referring to the new father-figure as “Dad” – this is strictly speaking a criminal offence in terms of the Children’s Act. However, each matter is considered on its own facts. As long as the new father-figure does not hold himself out as the biological/adoptive father, or deceive the children or others into believing that he is such, he will in all likelihood not be convicted, if any criminal charges were to be brought, which is unlikely. • Paternal grandparents’ contact queries – in terms of the law, they have no automatic right to contact. However, if they choose to bring an application for contact, the Court will consider whether or not it’s in the minor children’s best interest for them to have such contact. • Maintenance for the minor children from the grandparents – grandparents are responsible for maintenance payments for grandchildren, if the parents do not contribute.

Home Life Save with Geyser Timer Many of us know that household geysers account for as much as 60% of our electricity bill. But do you know why? Here’s an explanation: Every time the temperature in your geyser drops a few degrees, the thermostat switches the element back on and heats the water up again. This switching on and off occurs up to 30 times a day. Every time your geyser switches on, it uses the equivalent power of 50 light bulbs. And for all this the average family uses less than four hours of hot water per day (and is therefore paying for 600 hours of hot water per month that they will never use). So apart from switching off your geyser when you go to work (and then forgetting to switch it on again when you come home), what do you do? Install a geyser timer. A geyser timer will drastically reduce the number of times your geyser switches on and off in a day and thereby save you money every month. Simply choose the best times of day at which to have hot water (e.g. morning and evening for baths/ showers) and then set the timer to switch off the geyser when not in use (e.g. during the night and parts of the day). Once set up and the on/off cycle is established, you can leave it to do its work. Save money – and the environment – with a geyser timer.

Treatment is fast and eﬀective and most spider veins will disappear within a week or two. The larger varicose veins take about three to four weeks to disintegrate. The body can still make new veins which could become varicose later on, especially if there’s a genetic tendency for varicosities. Most of the time though, once the vein is treated, it takes many years before varicose veins develop again, if at all. Tiny Life Hardy Xperia V Smartphone Passes the Toddler Test The latest smartphone from Sony Mobile, the Sony Xperia V, is touted as “toddler proof”, what with built-in dust and waterresistance and worry-free dropping capacity. Mum’s Mail put the phone to the test by giving it to local nursery school teacher’s assistant, Robyn Daniels, to try out. Robyn teaches three to four year olds so the setting was perfect. “I put the phone next to the outdoor water table,” reported Robyn, “and one of my pupils, attracted to the shiny object, picked it up and sure enough dropped it in the water. I could see the water shrinking together, away from the phone, just as water draws away from a duck’s feathers. Before it was even dry the phone was dropped in the sandpit and I simply dusted off the sand and it carried on working fine.” As for the phone’s actual features Robyn was impressed: “I liked the big screen, its lightweight feel and how easy it is use. It has everything – a camera, messaging, Internet, calculator, torch and alarm.” She even used the HD video recorder to record a teenage friend’s school play. But, as we all know, cell phones need to be adult proof as well as toddler proof! “The same week I was trying out the Xperia V,” explained Robyn, “an adult friend dropped his smartphone in a tub of bar one sauce and had to send it away for a minimum of two weeks to be fixed. If that had been the Xperia V, he could have just licked it clean, rinsed it under the tap and carried on using it!”

Young Life Math Dice® Jr Fun with maths? It doesn’t sound like something many children will enjoy, and yet ThinkFun’s Math Dice Jr has proven to be just as popular as its bigger brother – Math Dice. Young Life Netcare Umhlanga Rocks Nippers Surf Lifesaving is a sport that can be advanced to provincial and national levels and is complementary to all other sports (on land and sea). It is also a “sport for life” and clubs such as Umhlanga Rocks Surf Lifesaving Club have numerous members with 50+ years service who are still actively involved in Surf Lifesaving. Nippers is a group within Surf Lifesaving that introduces ocean safety to kids aged six to 14. Nipper Surf Lifesaving is great for getting the whole family outdoors, together and having fun. Netcare Rox Nippers, part of the Umhlanga Rocks Surf Lifesaving Club, proudly celebrates its 60th anniversary this year. The Netcare Rox Nippers have a particularly strong following of around 150 Nippers, with about 65 of them competitive in two main events – the KZN Champs Natal and S.A. Champs. Netcare Rox Nippers are fortunate to have 20 parent coaches, each of whom is selected for their specific skills and attributes relating to Surf Lifesaving. The children also have immediate access to the Rox Junior and Senior Sections and the skills of current and past provincial, national and world champions. Whilst the Surf Lifesaving season starts in September, the Netcare Rox Nippers enjoy training right through the year. Educated Life Ocean View Turns 21 Ocean View Montessori School is turning 21 this year. Their first year in 1993 was spent at Lucy’s house with eight pioneering children. In 1994 they moved to the Durban North Scout Hall, at Glenwood Old Boys’ Club, and quickly increased numbers to 40 pupils, making it time to move again. This brought the school to their current home at 32 Oxford Drive, where they now have 65 children aged 18 months to six years. The school is still run by Rose Lowry and Lucy Watson and many staff members have been with the school for 16 years. The years have flown past and each year the facilities and curriculum have been added to. Ocean View has a specialist drama and music teacher every week – something that adds a great deal to the children’s all-round development and confidence. Another addition has been Psychomotor Education which is an indoor movement programme developing gross and fine motor co-ordination, communication and team work and is a great deal of fun for the pupils. Ocean View is very proud to have been part of the Eco-Schools Programme for the past seven years is now a Platinum Award holder. With an abundant vegetable garden, chickens and a recycling station, there are always activities for the children to be involved in. It has been rewarding to hear news of past pupils over the years. One founder pupil actually came back to Ocean View to complete her Montessori Teacher’s Diploma, having already completed a BSc Anatomy at Bristol University. Educated Life Children and Anger Anger can be dysfunctional if a child expresses it in ways that cause him or her distress and emotional or physical harm to others. Children can be encouraged to express their anger more appropriately by helping them to understand their anger and to communicate what they are angry about. “I feel angry when…” and “What makes me angry is…” are phrases that a child can be taught to articulate their anger. Other outlets to express strong negative emotions can be found resourcefully by parent and child within the child’s environment. Children express their emotions well through the medium of art, play and story-telling. As a parent you can educate your child about how he or she is affected by their own anger. Anger induces stress and tension and is a physically uncomfortable state. Empathy is also an important concept for children to learn in order to understand the effect that his or her anger has on those around them. This can be taught simply by asking your child how he or she would feel if someone responded to him or her in the same way. Other techniques to diffuse anger are focused deep breathing, relaxation and visualisation of a calm, peaceful place that has meaning for the child. Younger children who are not sufficiently verbal and cognitively or socially mature to be able to apply some of these methods need firm boundaries and adult mediation to learn how to express themselves. It is important to allow your child to express anger in a way that is controlled and contained as unexpressed anger will no doubt erupt eventually. Anger can be a healthy emotion when voiced in positive ways and children who are given strategies to do this can find alternatives to aggression as an anger response. Party Life Windmill Cones for Birthday Treats Use ice-cream cones in clever but simple ways to make birthday party treats. Why not try these Windmills for Father’s Day? For 10 windmills: 10 ice-cream cones, variety of small sweets, green and white butter icing, 10 Marie biscuits, flower sprinkles, 10 wafer biscuits, 10 Smarties. Method: Fill the ice-cream cone with a variety of small sweets. Fit an icing bag with a star-shaped nozzle, fill with green butter icing and pipe a border around the edge of a Marie biscuit. Press the biscuit onto the cone. Stand the cone upright, and place flower sprinkles around the edge of the butter icing. Leave to set. Cut each wafer biscuit lengthwise in two. Using a small blob of white butter icing, stick two wafer halves in an “X” shape to form the sails of the windmill. Use another blob of icing to stick a Smartie to the middle of each sail. Leave to set. Use white butter icing to stick the sails to the front of the cone. Leave to stand for the icing to set completely. Butter Icing Ingredients: 500g icing sugar, sifted, 100g butter or block margarine at room temperature, 30ml hot water, 2.5ml vanilla essence, food colouring. Method: Cream the icing sugar and butter/ margarine together. Gradually add the hot water and mix to a smooth consistency (do not overmix). Mix in the vanilla essence. Party Life House of Heart The House of Heart Emporium is situated in the beautiful natural setting of Dunrobin Garden Centre in Pietermaritzburg. The centre consists of smaller spaces/ stalls hosting a variety of crafters, suppliers and traders’ products. Known as Dunrobin years ago, the Emporium was relaunched this year with its new name. The new owners, both “house moms”, are Ronel du Preez, who comes from a recruitment background, and Nada Kooy, a former project manager. Both ladies are farm girls, born and bred. Products sold are mainly local South African products and include arts, crafts, edibles, clothes, gifts, décor, jewellery, accessories and health products. The aim of House of Heart Emporium is to inspire people, give them ideas, and oﬀer local products to the community, as well as a platform for crafters/manufacturers. A market is held monthly (for S.A. products only) on the last Saturday, from 9am to 2pm. It includes fresh produce. Events are also held on a regular basis, such as talks and art exhibitions. This rock show production is a world first in two ways. It’s the first time a record label of the calibre of EMI has released a graphic novel and CD prior to a musical being produced. The second world first is that although there are many rock musicals, this unique one has a storyline projecting rock into the future which reflects on us today. The story reveals that no matter who you come across in the world, we all have the surroundings of music and dance to unite us. Rockville 2069 is a futuristic love rock musical set against a milieu of a postapocalyptic world and is embedded in the philosophies that characterise the rebellion of the 60s, 70s and those that are currently shaping our world. The artistic brainchild of composer Johnny Ray, who wrote the music and co-wrote the lyrics and script with Bruno Paiolo, Rockville 2069 is a relevant and contemporary rock musical aimed to transform and create new movements in this genre. 1. Heat the oil and fry the onions and garlic until soft. 2. Add the cinnamon, cumin and ginger and fry for a further 2 minutes. 3. Add the water and the chicken pieces. 4. Add the parsley and allow to simmer, stirring often until the chicken is cooked. 5. When the chicken is cooked, remove from pot and add the honey, apricots and raisins and simmer for a further 15 minutes until the sauce has thickened. 6. Spinach, Chickpea and Sun-dried Tomato Salad

Ingredients: • 1packet sun-dried tomatoes • 1/2 packet baby spinach • 3 tbsp fresh sweet basil • 1 tin chickpeas, drained • 1 tbsp olive oil • 2 tbsp balsamic vinegar • 2 tbsp lemon juice (preferably fresh) • 2 tsp mustard powder • 1 tsp xylitol/honey • 1 round fat-reduced feta cheese, cubed • Freshly ground black pepper Method: 1. Place the tomatoes in boiling water for 1 minute. 2. Arrange the spinach, basil and drained chickpeas on a serving dish and add tomatoes. 3. For the dressing, mix the olive oil, balsamic vinegar, lemon juice, mustard powder and xylitol, and pour over the salad. 4. Add black pepper to taste, toss salad and add feta cheese.
