So much for a peaceful Mother’s Day! Dads, please be mindful that the weather can change quite suddenly this time of year, so remember to pack in a few warm clothes for the family. Alma Maxwell of Outsourced Communications recently started “Wednesday Workshops” for people wanting to learn more about social media for work purposes. I attended one of these workshops with four other students at Alma’s home in Durban North. We all settled down with Alma in her comfortable lounge and fired up our laptops. Alma had her laptop connected to a TV screen and with the WIFI on we all went live. Just a note here – before attending Alma’s workshop check that your laptop doesn’t block you from other networks like mine did. I was only able to connect via a 3G card someone quickly installed for me. We focussed mainly on Facebook Business Pages for the morning, touching a little on Twitter. Alma firstly explained how important it is to have a strategy for your social media use (e.g. What medium does your market mostly use? What’s the best time to go onto Facebook/Twitter?) While giving us basic info, Alma also tailored her teaching to suit each person and their particular needs and levels of competence. So for instance I wanted to know how to post to Facebook from my mobile phone. To answer this question Alma took us to: Manage, Edit Page, Mobile. Here I discovered an e-mail address allocated specifically for mobile phone use. Before the morning had ended I had successfully e-mailed a post from my phone – how liberating! Lots of tips later I can now go onto Facebook and identify the uses and benefits of the different tabs. I thoroughly enjoyed my morning (8.30am to 12pm “ish”) and really recommend Alma’s Wednesday Workshops. At R300 per workshop, it’s a steal. A properly worded and signed Power of Attorney is a legally valid document. It entitles the holder (the person named in the document) to do anything that Granny might decide to do with her money. As long as the Granny concerned knows what she is doing when she signs the power and does not withdraw it at a later stage, her money is largely out of her control.

Green Life Dishwashers Go Green Better Earth has produced a cleaning agent for dishwashers – the Better Earth Dishwashing Gel for Automatic Machines. The gel (with essence of Rooibos) requires no additional rinse aids or salts to keep your dishwasher clean. This is because it contains watersoftening agents in the form of Sodium Citrate. It also has low foaming surfactants (Decyl Glucoside) which help clean the dirt and prevent droplets forming and staining the dishwasher. The gel, which looks a bit like honey, contains no ethoxylated ingredients, sulphated surfactants, parabens, animal products or synthetic fragrances. Because of the gel’s natural ingredients, you can hook your machine up to a grey water system and safely use the waste water to water your garden. The instructions on the bottle say to use 5 - 10 ml in the dishwashing machine dispenser. I used about a tablespoonful each time – about 15ml. From a bottle of 500ml (there is also a 1 litre available) that means I’ll get about 33 washes. Apart from using too little gel in the dispenser the ﬁrst time I used it (and therefore not having clean dishes just that once) I found that the gel cleaned my dishes as well as the other products I normally use. I look forward to using it without the salt I had added shortly before using the gel.

World Asthma Day (1 May) Asthma is an increasingly common, chronic, inflammatory condition of the airways affecting 7% - 9% of adults and 10% - 12% of children in South Africa. Onset occurs most often in childhood but can begin at any time, even in late adulthood. Asthma runs in some families, but many people with asthma have no other family members affected. Symptoms: Can include wheeze, tightness in the chest, cough and shortness of breath. Symptoms can range from mild to severe in different people, and at different times in the same person. Diagnosing Asthma: Sometimes symptoms are typical and the diagnosis is easily made. In addition, two commonly used tests (spirometry and peak flow) can be used. In a spirometry test a person will blow into a spirometer as fast as they can for as long as they can before and after treatment. An improvement in the value after treatment to open up the airways is typical of asthma. Peak Flow measures the speed of air that you can blow out of your lungs. No matter how strong you are, if your airways are narrowed, your peak flow reading will be lower than expected for your age, size and sex.

It’s really helpful in so many ways to continue. Formula-fed babies get sick on average 12 to 14 times in their ﬁrst year, which is more than once a month! Breastfed babies get sick maybe once or twice in the ﬁrst year so you will not need to take off work as often to care for a sick baby. Practically: Breastfeed all feeds that you are with your baby. Express all feeds that you are not, to stimulate your milk supply. These will also be your baby’s feeds while you are apart. Weekends and evenings: Enjoy the closeness of nursing your baby but express after feeds. Keep and add up all those 5 - 20mls in the bottom back of the fridge for Monday (expressed milk can last for about three days in the fridge if you’re very clean and sterile). On work days, wake up half an hour earlier and breastfeed, then get yourself and baby ready for the day. Just before you leave your baby, breastfeed again. Then express all missed feeds (tea time, lunch time, tea time) and keep this for the next day. One to two hours before being reunited with your baby, ask the carer not to give baby anything so that you and your baby can bond and breastfeed as soon as you walk in the door. Young Life Protect Skin and Prevent Damage Children play outdoors, mostly during school hours. This leaves them exposed to Ultraviolet (UV) damage. At school children are exposed five days a week and during high-risk periods. Did you know that ten minutes’ exposure is enough time to become sunburnt? That two blistering sunburns before the age of 18 can dramatically increase their risk of cancer in later life? It is estimated that skin cancers could have been prevented by adequate skin protection in childhood alone. Whilst it is essential that we provide our children with the protection they need, sun protection is, of course, also vital for adults. It is vital in the fight against skin cancer and against ageing. Skin care products may go some way to maintaining a youthful appearance, but sun protection is your greatest long-term defence. So, wear UV clothing (e.g. when driving, doing sport, going to the beach) and apply sunscreen as part of your daily routine. Winter also does not mean the end of UV damage. Electronic Playground Music (EPM), based in Springﬁeld Park, is launching singing lessons (which includes Vocal Coaching and Artist Development) for people aged eight and upwards. Lessons will be conducted by Elijah (a sound engineer, song writer and music producer) and Rain (a music producer and song writer). “Children all look at superstars and also want to perform themselves,” said Elijah. “We are going to develop youngsters, give them a sense of direction and teach them to sing professionally.”

Vocal Coaching at EPM will include breathing exercises, output (i.e. how to sing from the diaphragm), scales, listening to music, vocal strengthening, some theory and much more. Elijah and Rain will help children discover their particular strengths and which genre of music to which their voices are suited. Children will be encouraged to bring songs they want to learn to sing and will be guided within their genres and developed according to their strengths. Artist Development will include training in stage presence, microphone control, building conﬁdence and how to use emotions and drama in their music. Elijah and Rain, who record the music of South African artists who are signed to record labels, are convinced that there are many talented artists in our own country who would beneﬁt from the type of training EPM will offer. Individual 30-minute lessons are available weekdays from 6pm to 9pm and on Saturdays from 10am to 5pm. The price is R150 per lesson or R600 per month for four lessons.

Educated Life Autumn The change of season to autumn can make a great way of introducing the second school term. In Durban’s subtropical climate, the change to autumn is not as noticeable as in the Midlands in terms of temperature and autumn leaves, but there is still a lot to discuss and learn. Discuss the changes in the leaves of deciduous trees and why this happens. Ask families to collect autumn leaves if they go out of town at the weekends. Make autumn leaf collages, leaf rubbings and crowns with autumn leaves. Talk about how animals prepare for autumn and discuss hibernation and the migration of birds, particularly our local Barn Swallows (www.barnswallows.co.za). Start to prepare bird feeders so that the garden birds will have plenty of food during winter. Start another permaculture bed and plant vegetables for winter: broccoli, broad beans, cabbage, cauliflower, green peas, lettuce, parsley and rocket. Ask families to collect old flower pots and decorate them with acrylic paint. Use them to plant winter flowering bulbs which can then be sent home as gifts later in the year. Daffodils, Freesias and Irises all work really well. Help the children to understand about caring for themselves in autumn. They can be reminded of preventing cross infections during the cold season by blowing their noses, throwing the tissue away and washing hands. Start boosting vitamin C intake by making fresh orange juice at school. With a big basket of oranges and a couple of orange squeezers each child can regularly make a cup of fresh juice for themselves and really enjoy the process and taste.

Do What? 1. Mix half a cup of milk with a tablespoon of sugar in the small zip-seal bag. 2. Fill the large bag with ice and 6 tablespoons of salt. 3. Add the small bag of ice cream mixture to the large bag of salt and ice. 4. Shake for 5 minutes. 5. Grab a spoon and enjoy your ice cream.

Nothing could have been ﬁner than celebrating “Maureen’s” 100th birthday recently! Umgeni Steam Railway recently celebrated their steam engine’s centenary by having a special “Dinner in the Diner”. Although Maureen is no longer in service for technical reasons, she was still a ﬁne reason to have a good meal and funds were raised towards her restoration and repairs. There were two sittings in the dining car “Maputo” at Inchanga station at 12pm and 1.30pm. The later sitting was reserved mainly for Umgeni Steam Railway members, but members of the public were also able to join in. Each sitting accommodated 44 people and the guests enjoyed soup, roast beef and vegetables and pudding.

This market meets on the ﬁrst Saturday of every month from 9am to 2pm. It moved last year from its old venue in Greyville to where it is now – the Moses Mabhida Stadium (People’s Park – the paved/grass area to the south of the stadium). There is plenty of parking – either underground (entrance diagonally opposite Kings’ Park Virgin Active) or outdoors next to Kings’ Park pool. The I Heart market sells goods based on the following criteria: hand crafted, home-made, locally designed with at least 50% made by yourself, and with a contemporary edge. My daughter and I visited the market on a sweltering February day and made a beeline for the cooldrink stand. After indulging in ﬂavoured popcorn and an apple-cinnamon pancake we browsed through the stalls, most of which were under one large roof. This market convenes on the ﬁrst and third Saturday of the month (and occasionally on a Friday evening) at the Driefontein Nursery in Salt Rock (travel on the N2 north and take the second turn-off after Ballito). After a rather rocky trip up the driveway a friend and I arrived at the market on a Saturday in March and sat down ﬁrst to enjoy a coffee. The market is small, shady and very nicely laid out.
