K9 COMMUNICATIONS OFFERS A FUTURE FOR YOUR DOGS

• Does not harm surrounding tissue • Pain free and non-invasive • Better results than RF and ultrasound • Effective way to eliminate fat and reduce cellulite in all areas

Cool-lipolysis uses advanced cooling technology to selectively target fat bulges and eliminate fat cells through a gradual process that does not harm the surrounding tissue. When fat cells are exposed to precise cooling they undergo a process called “apoptosis”, wherein they shrink and die. This triggers the body’s natural lymphatic debris collection response, removing the damaged fat cells while preserving surrounding healthy tissue and promoting a dermal fibrotic response. The controlled cooling is applied via the hand piece through the skin to the fat layer triggering the fat elimination process. The whole procedure takes 1 - 2 hours depending on the size and number of areas to be treated. t: 031 - 584 8166 e: info@laserandbody.co.za w: www.laserandbody.co.za

Under An African Sky Crow Wildlife Calendar

Under An African Sky is a voluntary association formed by Ian Du Randt, Managing Director of Compass Waste Services, to raise funds for animal welfare in South Africa. For the last four years a team of employees from Compass, along with Professional Photographer Shane Doyle and Fine Art Designer Brendan Bromfield, have come together to create an exclusive annual wildlife calendar for the local and overseas market. Once again, this year their focus is to raise funds for “CROW” (The Centre for Rehabilitation of Wildlife), www.crowkzn.co.za. CROW admits between 3000 and 5000 injured, orphaned and displaced wild animals every year. Funds raised through the sale of the 2013 African Exposures calendar will be used towards a 4 x 4 release and monitoring vehicle that can be used to rescue animals in the wild, assist in soft releases where monitoring and feeding is required, and allow access into difficult-toreach areas.

Dad’s Life Michaela’s Boyfriends My daughter Michaela is a very beautiful 14 year old. And she is half Italian… if she had any Italian brothers they’d be taking turns at watching every dude around her. But there is no need for that: her boyfriends are all known to me by name. And I know their every move and every intention before the time… What is my secret? A frontal lobe injury six years ago left me with an uncanny ability to “see” things. My daughter is very distressed about it… She asks me for money to go see a movie at the mall…and if a boy is involved I always know about it. “Tall-ish, slovenly, name starts with a ‘C’….tried to kiss you already.” “DAD? STOPPIT! Cameron is a very cool guy.” I can’t help it. I see it like it is. But in spite of my “liberated attitude” I fall into the same trap as every other father: I see the perfect guy for her. “Who’s the smooth guy getting dropped off at school by his father every morning… name starts with an ‘H’? He kinda likes you. Bring him round for supper some time.” “Howard? Dad… he’s such a dork! Eeuw!” And I see the guy she’s with. The typical teenage bad***, name starts with a “G”. Going nowhere, jeans halfway down his rear, brand label rebel in every chat room available on a BlackBerry. And I sigh. If I point out that he is an insensitive, two-timing, good-for-nothing rascal I’m just adding fuel to the fire. She will stick to him like clingwrap. “Gavin is a great lad Michaela. I like him. My future son-in-law.” She broke up with him yesterday. I’m so loving my frontal lobe injury… By Simon Stengel.

You may have a pension fund or a provident fund, a preservation fund or a retirement annuity. What are the differences? Pension or provident funds are benefits offered by your employer. You, as the member, and possibly your employer, will make a contribution to the fund monthly as part of your salary package. Membership of the fund is linked to your employment and if you leave your employer, you will normally leave the fund. In this case you can preserve your benefit or take the funds in cash, after the applicable tax has been deducted. If you choose to preserve your benefit, you could do so by transferring the funds to a preservation fund.

Legal Excellence And Integrity

Retirement annuities are policies taken out privately and individually. They are not linked to your employer. You can contribute to your retirement annuity regularly and add funds when you choose to. All retirement funds are invested in an investment portfolio of your choice (subject to legislative limits) which should be in line with your risk profile. The funds aim to grow at a rate that outperforms inflation, giving you a real return and accumulating capital.

Business Life What To Do Before Saying “I Do”

As a formal legal union, the legal aspects of every marriage must be understood prior to the actual ceremony taking place. So do things correctly from the beginning and ensure that your wedding is a day of celebration that sets the tone for the rest of your married life.

An Antenuptial Contract (ANC) is a contract which couples conclude to determine what will happen to their respective estates upon death or divorce. If there is no ANC, then you will be married “in community of property”. This means that the respective estates are pooled and become one joint estate, with both spouses having an equal stake in this joint estate and equal rights to, and equal say in, the management of the joint estate. So, it is very important to be fully aware of, and involved in, the financial aspects of the joint estate. With an ANC, the couple can be married out of community of property, with the exclusion of the accrual system. Then each partner’s estate remains separate from the other’s, and neither partner has any claim against the other’s estate, whatsoever.

An ANC out of community of property, with the application of the accrual system, means that the partners retain their separate estates, and share the joint growth, on death or divorce. The accrual is only calculated and paid upon the dissolution of the marriage, and cannot be attached by a Third Party. The ANC is signed by the parties, before a Notary Public, BEFORE the wedding, and registered in the Deeds Office, so make sure that one of your wedding checklist items is to make an appointment with an attorney. Business Life Tea With Claire

Roger Knowles Attorney

Fine china, properly made tea, dainty eats and stimulating conversation – that’s Claire Newton to a T(ea). Claire is a psychologist, speaker, trainer, coach and hat lover. She holds talks such as: YOU-Q Finding Your Inner Winner, The Art of Conversation, Coping with Conflict, Phone Finesse, and Attention on Assertiveness. These talks offer motivation, inspiration, warmth and insight, and are based on Claire’s extensive training, travel and experience.

Divorce & Family Law Only in Durban North (Formerly of Pravda & Knowles Attorneys)

031 - 563 1238

“The Art of Conversation” was held recently at the St James on Venice in Morningside and included light, live music and a delicious tea. After welcome drinks guests settled down to listen to Claire’s advice on how to: be an interesting person in social situations, avoid being trapped by boring people, and ensure you’re invited back to functions/events. Before going to an event Claire advised that guests go with the intention of adding something to the event rather than waiting for someone else to do it. Be prepared to invite people to join your conversation, she said, plan your conversation starters, find out who’s going to be there, prepare your jokes, be an interesting person (listen to the radio, think about issues – know a little about a lot of things), and dress appropriately (if you’re unsure of the dress code rather be overdressed than underdressed). Her advice on what to do at the function included: being positive not negative (no grumbling or gossiping), not monopolising the conversation and how to deal with monopolisers and gossipers. Practical tips included modulating your voice and using non-verbal language to show you are listening. Future Tea With Claire talks include: Conflict to Co-operation on 18 October and Body Language for Confidence on 1 November, both at 10am.

Delicious Life Cracking the Food Label Code

Find us at The Food Market at The Hellenic on 27 October!

As of March this year, some important legislation regarding food labels was implemented to make healthy eating a little easier for us!

GREAT NEWS: We have halved the oil content in our mayonnaises, yet Martinnaise is creamier than ever before!

Advantages for us: • All food labels and advertising will have to conform to the same format of conveying nutritional information. This will make the comparison of products far easier for us. Visit www.martinnaise.co.za • Anyone with an allergy triggered by the so-called “common for your closest stockist or call Martin 031 - 700 9193 or allergens” (e.g. egg, cow’s milk, fish, peanuts etc.) will only have 082 809 9194 to check the list of ingredients to see at a glance if the food contains one or more of these allergens. • The use of “no sugar added” will be prohibited for all foods that inherently contain any type of sugar. • No label may make a so-called “negaup with friends and enjoy tive content claim” if all the foods in the Catch High Tea at Hirsch’s Umhlanga, same category are also free of the spe- My Coffee Shop. A wide selection of cific nutrient e.g. plant oils which pres- bite size portions enabling everyone try everything. Only R120 per ently state that they are “cholesterol free” to person, done in tables of 4. will have to change their statement to “a naturally cholesterol free food”. What are the traps? • Food that is labelled lower fat only means that it’s lower in fat than its full-fat counterpart. • Food that is labelled low sodium only means that it is lower in salt, but is not salt free. • Fat free: yes it may actually be fat free, but may have lots of added sugar, salt or other chemicals. Read the label with caution. • No added sugar: this doesn’t mean that it doesn’t already contain high portions of sugar. Some fruit juices can have up to 11 teaspoons of fruit sugar/fructose in them naturally. • Natural: this could mean grown in nature somehow. So what? • Light: this could even mean light in flavour, weight or colour. Don’t be fooled.

Bookings are essential, Cheree 083 700 9799

Spring Super Psychedelic Purple Juice

Special Occasion Cheese Towers

Deborah Sutherland of Sprout It shares the following about cabbage: “There are amazing benefits of chlorophyll-enriched green veggie juices and smoothies. Now try the combo of cabbage juice and purple cabbage. It is loaded with calcium (the primary mineral for healthy bones and teeth), potassium (which keeps the body’s fluid levels from fluctuating to unhealthy levels), vitamin C (one cup of cabbage provides 51mg or 85% of 60mg daily requirement), vitamin A (supports the body’s immune system), plus it is rich in sulphur which is great for healthy cell walls (hair and nails). We need to include a variety of coloured fruits and vegetables in our diets as all are rich in enzymatic pigments which keep our antioxidant levels up, keeping those free radicals where they belong. The recipe is also good for weight loss. There are 22 calories per cup. Purple cabbage is more than 90% water. Foods with a high water content have low energy density levels which make them a good choice to include in a weight loss programme.” Super Psychedelic Purple Juice Recipe: Take half a purple cabbage and half a green cabbage. Put through your juicer and enjoy. Apple, pear and pineapple complement this juice beautifully. Cabbage juice is the one juice you must drink immediately after juicing. It is a sweet, very filling drink. Sip slowly. The juice is great if you need additional support for the stomach and digestive tract. Source: Deborah Sutherland, Sprout It, sproutit@telkomsa.net.

Tanya Visser’s Tips for Young Gardeners

Spring has blossomed and so should your garden. Who said gardening needs to be boring! Parents, take some time off this Spring and involve the young ones in an effort to educate and create awareness of the importance of gardening. S.A.’s Garden Guru, Tanya Visser, Editor of The Gardener and Die Tuinier magazines, author of various gardening books and host to the famous Home Channel show, The Gardener, has a passion for gardening that rooted itself at a young age. It all started with helping her dad in the veggie patch, and to this day she loves growing her own vegetables. Tanya has a few tips and advice for the young gardeners out there, parents pay attention: • Start early – they are never too young to start learning the art of gardening, get them involved as early possible. • Get dirty – children learn more when they are playing, get them to join you in the garden for a hands-on experience of nature’s gift. • Make it a hobby – schedule gardening in after homework or on weekends. • Patience – don’t over water or over feed your plants with growth chemicals. • Start simple – a square patch in the garden or pot plant in the kitchen window is perfect. • Getting the right tools – children work well when given the right tools. • Encourage them – if your child is interested in gardening, nurture that, get them to read books and magazines about gardening. • First plant attempt – if you are not sure what to plant first, cherry tomatoes are easy to grow and require little attention. • Use seeds – using seeds to grow plants will also encourage the child to want to know more about the growing process. Ladies, Stay Alert and Trust Your Instincts, Says ADT The reality is that women are more vulnerable to crime because criminals view ladies as soft targets. Martin Kriel, Managing Director of ADT KZN, says the key to safety is always to err on the side of caution. “Tell someone where you are going and the time you expect to return. Save to your mobile phone or memorise the details of the person to be contacted in the event of an emergency. Remember less is more when it comes to wearing flashy jewellery and carrying cash. Also, if you are taking a handbag, carry it close to your body and not dangling by the straps.” One of the major issues adding to crimes against women is that often women become distracted. “A distracted person is an easy target,” says Kriel. “Be aware of people around you when heading to your vehicle, especially at places such as shopping centres, petrol stations, and the likes. Ensure that you take a moment to check the street before pulling into a driveway, be it your own or a friend’s.” If you are driving, Kriel says the first thing to do once you are inside your vehicle is to ensure that all the doors are locked. “Never drive with a handbag or any other valuable items on a seat or in the view of anyone looking into your vehicle from the outside. Try and make your car a mobilefree zone so you can concentrate on your surrounds and keeping you and your family safe.”

Beautiful Bathrooms

The bathroom is the place we go to rejuvenate, relax, and prepare for a new day – daily rituals we couldn’t achieve without bathroom essentials like the washbasin, mirror and light. Duravit Mirrorwall combines all of these elements to create an ideal all-encompassing lightweight wall system for the bathroom. The minimalist design is sleek, but packed with cupboard space, and is beautifully presented with continuous mirror doors, a ceramic basin and drawer, and a wood finish surface area. The single basin model, on special at Richmond Plumbing in Glenashley, is 1.2m long, 2m high and 65cm wide. There are five mirror doors, three at the top, and two on either side of the ceramic drawer (which is suitable for storing towels). The two large ones at the top open to reveal more mirror surface behind as well compartment-type wooden storage areas on the inside of the doors. The third door on top contains glass shelving as well as a very handy electrical point for shavers and hairdryers. The large lights, one on either side of the unit, can be rotated according to the user’s need, and are operated by a tiny touch-sensitive switch. There are also lights inside the cupboards. The washbasin is rectangular and comes with a tap of your choice and a fancy push plug system (the kind you get in hotels). The surface area for the washbasin is finished in a contrasting wood veneer (available in a variety of colours) and really completes the look of this modern bathroom unit. To view the Mirrorwall, which is on special, visit Richmond Plumbing at 39 Ashley Avenue, Glenashley. Contact: 031 – 572 3344, martin@richmondgroup.co.za.

Healthy Life Wellbeing of Women “Research shows that the wellbeing of women plays a crucial role in personal and career success. It impacts on performance and productivity in all spheres. Our course was developed to enrich and inspire women to be the best that they can be, and to impart skills to enhance personal development and the quality of lives. Our objective is to unlock the full potential of the women who embark on our courses.” Over a year ago, Chandre Ezra and Ashley Vos, decided to embark on developing a programme designed especially for women with a view to addressing the very specific needs and challenges the modern woman faces. Finding balance in our lives, results in productivity and optimal performance - on all levels. This is not an easy task, given the context of the society we live in with the many roles women need to play. Only through stopping and taking time out and engaging in self-reflection will this balance be possible. Courses are run over a series of classes held for individual women, as well as at organisations that recognise the importance of the women who work for them. The course modules have been developed in order to ensure that each woman gains personal growth and individual skills required to become the best she can be. Modules are: • Where am I at? • Making it work. • The keys to success. • Onwards and upwards. • Where am I going?

Healthy Life Parenting Woes in the 21st Century: Is There a Manual? Are you a concerned parent wondering what to do with your “difficult”/“troubled” child and his behaviour? Are you being “stressed out” by what is happening at school with your child and her learning, or lack thereof? Are you a parent who has tried everything else and failed? If the answer to any of the above is “yes” then help is at hand. It is often said that parenting doesn’t come with a manual but now it does! Positive Parenting Programme (Triple P®: www.triplep.net) is such a “manual” and has been shown to work (in other parts of the world). Parenting has not changed over the years but the times and the influences of the environment on children’s growth and development have changed. Several factors need to be taken into account – genetic/ biological, emotional/ psychological, socio-cultural, religious and spiritual – when assessing and managing children and families beset with behavioural and mental health problems. We now know that there is complex interplay between genes and environment, nature and nurture, and that each child and family situation is unique. In these modern and challenging times it is vital that families connect. How, is the question. Responsibility for change lies with whom: parent, child or both? What strategies could be employed to address problematic behaviour and to encourage desirable behaviour? Universal principles can be applied in order to address all these issues and concerns ensuring positive outcomes for children and families. However, as parents we need to first look after our own health and wellbeing before we can take care of our children; parental stress and ill-health negatively impact on children’s emotional and psychological wellbeing. Healthy Life Inflammation: Nutrition and the Protection Connection

Dr DM McLynn

Where diets are full and balanced they may be overloaded with pro-inflammatory components and deficient in anti-inflammatory nutrition. For the athlete, those who live an active lifestyle and those with physically demanding jobs, this is particularly important. The increased energy production associated with strenuous activity produces an increased inflammatory load as cells “rev up” energy production. Additionally, the “friction” association with the transmission of that energy through the muscular, skeletal, vascular and respiratory structures further adds to inflammatory load.

Cartenoid Complex Fills the Gap

GNLD offers a comprehensive range of powerful whole food antioxidants, iron and zinc, and has the capacity to boost immune function as much as 37% in just 20 days.

The more obvious symptoms of inflamed joints or muscles reflect broader and deeper inflammatory stress throughout the body. All of this reduces the ability to train, inhibits recovery, burdens immune capacity and slows healing. The prudent and sensible course for everyone, athletes in particular, therefore, is to pursue a diet that provides as much anti-inflammatory power as possible. That means less of the fat and sugar-loaded, fast, processed and convenience foods, replacing them with whole grains, fruits, vegetables, nuts, legumes and lean proteins, in particular, omega 3 fatty acid rich fish. Focusing on assuring a dietary abundance of omega 3 fatty acids can give big gains to the athletic individual. Carotenoid Complex is an excellent way for athletes to ensure they get an abundance of whole food immune boosters. The Carotenoid Complex has been the subject of repeated human clinical trials by researchers from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, showing it is highly bioavailable and provides powerful antioxidant protection to blood lipids and cell membranes.

The Importance of Omega 3

Anyone with a brain, eyes, heart and skeleton needs Omega 3s. The World Health Organisation and many other leading health authorities agree. Increasing the Omega 3 fatty acid content of our diets is a critical component in helping solve the chronic disease epidemic that the world is facing. Worldwide, currently, safe Omega-3-rich fish oil supplements are recommended for: • Easing joint pain and inflammation in conditions like osteo- and rheumatoid arthritis. • Brain development and function at every stage of life. • Increased mental performance and cognitive function over time. • Improved attention and concentration, especially in children and adults with ADD and ADHD. • Eye health – assists in normal eye development and preservation of macular health. • Intake of safe Omega 3s during pregnancy is recommended for normal brain and vision development of the baby. • Heart wise – Omega 3s support the circulatory system and retain normal Dr Paul Darby-Wade triglyceride levels. Healthline Medicentre supplies only the purest Omega 3s that have been extensively researched and obtained from suppliers of Norwegian and North American Salmon. Their oils are pure and produced according to Good Manufacturing Practice procedures. Healthline also complies with their own highly stringent limits for environmental pollutants that go way beyond the authorities’ requirements. Healthline Medicentre did all the work in sourcing the best Omega3s, providing between 1070mg and 1600mg of EPA, DHA, DPA and all eight naturally occurring Omega 3s to work together as nature intended. The Omega 3s are available in non-fishy-taste oil and capsule form from Healthline Medicentre, 3 High Ridge Road, Field’s Hill, Pinetown.

Healthy Life Mastectomy Wear: Restoring Confidence and Appearance Breast Cancer Awareness Month What is a breast form? A breast form is an external prosthesis that can be worn inside a mastectomy bra. Breast forms are designed to resemble natural breast tissue and are therefore made of medical grade silicone. Why do I need to wear a breast form? Wearing a breast form will help you to restore the weight that’s missing from your chest wall. Even though wearing a breast form can enhance your overall appearance, not wearing one can cause physical alterations as well. A weighted breast form will restore your body’s natural balance. When should I start wearing a breast form? Immediately following your surgery a temporary non-silicone form can be worn. A silicone breast form can be worn six to eight weeks after your surgery. I need to restore symmetry after a lumpectomy. What will work best for me? Shapers, also known as partials, are designed to restore symmetry, helping you achieve a balanced look and feel. I have post-mastectomy lymph oedema. What will work best for me? Lightweight breast forms are lighter compared to standard silicone forms. It is recommended for conditions such as lymph oedema and osteoporosis. What’s the difference between a post-mastectomy bra and a regular bra? Post-mastectomy bras are designed with a pocket on the inside of the bra cup. This pocket is designed to hold your breast prosthesis in place. Other bras may not be able to sustain the weight of the breast form. A post-mastectomy bra gives you the added security and comfort. A trained mastectomy fitter will consult with you to determine which bra works best for you. Contact: Apex Orthopaedics, 031 - 765 4096. Dr Megan Medina MTech(Hom) DUT

Hippocrates, the father of medicine, said in all illness look first to your spine! Your spine houses your nervous system which is the prime controller of every function in your body. If your spine is out of alignment, your body will compensate somewhere and this may result in poor posture, low energy levels, neck pain and headaches, lower back pain, tingling and numbness and sciatic pain.

It is important for athletes and runners to get their alignment checked as so many niggling injuries can be prevented through proper alignment and balance. The human frame will take more strain on one side if it is out of alignment, resulting in hamstring, groin, calf, knee, hip, ITB, Achilles tendon or foot problems. Early detection and correction can prevent a lot of frustration and needless injuries.

Energy levels and poor sleep patterns are huge signs that your body is stressed. Be it postural stress, mental or emotional stress – it all has an effect on your physical body and will slowly drain your energy levels. Chiropractic adjustments and acupuncture are the quickest, most effective ways of treating this, bringing your body back into alignment and balance so that you can relax, rest and sleep at a deep level so that you recuperate and restore your energy and vitality. This happens after one treatment session and within a maximum of three treatments you will feel like a new person. Contact: Dr Warren van Zyl, 031 – 573 1637, www.JustBeingHolistic.com.

Healthy Life Exercising and Joint Pain World Bone & Joint Week 12 – 20 October When it comes to joint pain, many of us are hesitant to exercise for fear of worsening our symptoms. It is important to remember that exercise is one of the greatest ways to not only alleviate existing joint pain, but also to prevent it in the future. Don’t forget diet. Managing your weight is one of the most important ways to prevent or reduce joint pain. Every extra kilo of weight places an additional six kilos on important joints, like your knees. This wears down protective cartilage over time, leading to arthritic joint pain. Switch from weight-bearing to resistance training. In addition to the typical benefits such as an increased metabolism and higher calorie burns, incorporating strength training to your daily programme can prevent and improve the symptoms of arthritis and joint pain. In some cases of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, strength training has YOGA proven more effective at treatment than medication. What’s New in Vitiligo? Vitiligo is an acquired condition that presents with white patches that involve any part of the body. This condition tends to affect 1 - 2% of the population worldwide. This condition is thought to be due to the body itself attacking the pigment containing cells in the skin.

Healthy Life Ubuntu Health Domestic workers and gardeners are important contributors to many people’s homes and families. Sadly, ill health from HIV/AIDS, Type 2 Diabetes, Cancer and TB has left many people helpless to know how to help these important people. This is because the stigma attached to these illnesses can often be a barrier to providing assistance. Ubuntu Health aims to address this problem with its products Ubuntu Immune Booster Powder, Unwele Immune Booster Pills and Isibhaha Treatment Pills. The products are made using a combination of natural products and traditional African remedies. Whilst the producers DO NOT claim that this is a cure for HIV/AIDS, dramatic improvement in HIV/AIDS patients’ wellness within just a few weeks has been noted. The Immune Booster Pills are made from the plant Sutherlandia Frutescens which is used for increasing energy levels, fighting infections (by lifting the CD4 count and decreasing the viral load) and increasing the appetite in wasted patients. The Immune Booster Power contains optimum ratios of vitamins and minerals specifically formulated for people with compromised immune systems. Whilst it is recommended that the first two products be used in conjunction with each other, the third, Isibhaha Treatment pills, can be taken when specific treatment is required, e.g. to treat mouth sores or pain. These pills are made from Warburgia, which is also a natural antibiotic. The products are manufactured in Richmond, KZN, and contain no preservatives or colourants. The three-product package costs R200 and lasts one person a month. To order, visit www.ubuntuhealthproducts. co.za. Contact: Mike, 082 822 6974, info@ubuntuhealthproducts.co.za. Energy Drinks: What You Need to Know! You may already know this, but there are significant differences between sports/ electrolyte drinks (those that contain carbohydrates and electrolytes) and the “Energy” drinks that are now all the rage. But what you may not know is just how significant, and potentially serious, these differences can be. A better name for “Energy Drinks” could be “Stimulant Drinks.” Basic nutrients provide energy for muscular activity and performance in the following way: Glucose is the body’s prime source of fuel for regenerating ATP, which is the essential energy currency required of athletes performing high intensity exercise. Carbohydrates (sugars) are a direct source of glucose, but the body can also make glucose by burning amino acids and fats. Glucose is like the coal in a power plant. When our bodies need more energy, they burn more glucose, just like when energy needs in a city increase, more coal is burned. In contrast, stimulants bind to neurons and activate them. But stimulants cannot substitute for glucose or the energy it produces. Using the analogy above, when you consume stimulants, it’s as if airflow to coal in the furnace of a power plant were suddenly and greatly increased. Yes, you get a big increase in the amount of energy being released but only because you are burning the coal up all at once. When the coal is gone, it’s gone. Stimulants make people feel like they have more energy but it is mostly because it is all being burned up at once.

Beautiful Life Wake Up Beautiful After much consideration I finally decided to have permanent make-up done so that I could “wake up beautiful” every day. I called Amanda Hardy of Wake Up Beautiful and made an appointment for eyeliner on my top and bottom lash line. My appointment took one hour and began with Amanda numbing the area with anaesthetic cream followed by anaesthetic liquid. She then applied the ink, reapplying the anaesthetic several times during the procedure. I chose dark brown as opposed to black as the former suits my fair features better. I must admit to being surprised by how dark and thick the lines looked immediately afterwards, but, true to what the post-procedure info says, about 50% of the initial application came off after a week. I was left with a very fine line which I really loved. Amanda gave me a little pot of gel with instructions to apply it to the tattooed area with an earbud every 30 to 60 minutes for the next five days. This greatly reduced the swelling and prevented any infection.

Permanent make-up on eyebrows, eyeliner, lipliner, full lip colour and corrections to previously done make-up. Also eyelash extensions & lash coat. Before

I made a touch-up appointment for a month later and was told that my colour had taken really well. All I need do to maintain my eyeliner permanently is to possibly have a touch-up in a year’s time and then every two to three years thereafter. I’m absolutely delighted with the results and highly recommend Amanda for her fine, careful work which has left me with natural, beautiful looking make-up.

The Spa’s vision is to lead the market with excellent, progressive treatments and current technology. The latest development in this regard is that of the slow integration of the Mesoestetics range. Part of this is a highly effective pigmentation treatment, Cosmelan, which uses less invasive, more affordable methods for treating melasma (initial use of a 12-hour mask followed by maintenance creams in gradually lessening quantities). If the results are maintained correctly the results can be life-changing.

Beautiful Life Care for Your Breasts Sh’Zen’s Cellular Boost for Neck & Bust is a specially formulated cream to nourish, protect, rehydrate and feed the often neglected, but revealing bust and neck areas. The trio of Pamplemousse Oils will tone and plump up the delicate skin while firming the breasts and imparting a delightful fresh fragrance to the skin. Pamplemousse oils are also know as effective lymphatic stimulants and could help inflammation and tenderness of the breast area. Marula essential oil is very rich in natural antioxidants which will help repair damage to the skin, and could also prevent rapid ageing of the skin. Shea butter, Palm and Sesame Oils have been added for their deeply penetrating and intensely hydrating qualities and will also improve the elasticity of the skin. Daily massage with this rich yet light cream will ensure that your décolleté remains youthful, radiant and firm. A Fibrocystic Breast Disease sufferer used Sh’Zen’s Cellular Boost for Neck & Bust cream and had this to say: “Fibrocystic Breast Disease is characterised by noncancerous lumps in the breast which can cause discomfort, often influenced by the menstrual cycle. I had to have the cysts drained on a regular basis. But I started using Perfect Endings about two years ago, and have now not had to have this uncomfortable procedure done in the last year. Since using the cream, my breasts have only been sensitive and ‘lumpy’ around my menstrual cycle.”

Serenity Skincare and Beauty

Situated in Kloof, Serenity is owned by beauty therapist Kirsty Eichbauer who has seven years of experience in the industry. Kirsty is very passionate about what she does. Building excellent client relations and providing the best service is a priority in her business. Organic skin care products are Kirsty’s preference and she uses the Italian skincare range RVB Holistic. I enjoyed a morning of pampering at the salon, starting with a back massage with Lilian Terry Homeopathic Aromatherapy oil. Heavenly! I prefer a medium pressure massage and it was just perfect – I felt very relaxed and re-energised afterwards. The RVB products were used for my facial which included a cleanse, skin peel, mask and moisturising. This organic product was suited to my skin as I tend to have a sensitive skin type. It has a lovely refreshing, fruity fragrance. I am in favour of organic products such as RVB Holistic Beauty because they contain no parabens, mineral oils, formaldehyde, petrochemical or silicones and are GMO free. Kirsty readily shared her wealth of knowledge and gave her advice on personalised beauty treatments. The pedicure was a wonderful treat; having your feet pampered and toenails buffed and made to look good with a lovely nail colour is always a fabulous must-have treatment. In the near future Kirsty will be getting an IPL machine for skin rejuvenation and treatment of spider veins, broken capillaries, pigmentation and hair removal. Kirsty offers a large range of treatments including the RVB Holistic Facials, Tinting, Make-up, Massage (including Bellabacci Massage – Chinese Cupping Massage Therapy), Slimming Faradic Pads, Manis, Pedis, Nail Artistry and Waxing. Spa packages and gift vouchers are available. Contact: Serenity Skincare and Beauty, 031 – 764 3331, info@serenityskincare.co.za. Review by Tercia Schick for Mum’s Mail.

African Organics has a range of body products, all of which are made with the environment in mind. The company adheres to French and German standards for 100% natural products, does not test on animals or use any animal ingredients, and has rapidly biodegradable ingredients that help keep our watercourses healthy. I tried out the African Organics Natural 2 in 1 Shampoo and the Natural Hand Sanitiser. Shortly before picking up my samples I had contracted a cold, which meant I had to wash my hands more often. What a pleasure it was to tap the push pump on the sanitiser bottle for a small dollop of the gel, instead of using soap, water and a towel to clean my hands. The sanitiser is cool and totally effective at getting rid of dirt and germs. It is also gentle, unlike many other hand sanitisers. My daughter, whose eczema-affected hands sting like crazy when she uses hand sanitiser, really liked this cleaner.

The 2 in 1 Shampoo is a lovely light shampoo with the most amazing smell. The fresh aroma lingered in my hair and in my bathroom for hours. Despite being a bit sceptical about the efficacy of the conditioner in a combination product like this, I was surprised to discover how easily my hair untangled when I stepped out of the shower. This product is perfect for hot summer days and frequent washing. African Organics products are available at Dischem and leading health stores or can be ordered direct. iThemba – Inspired by Hope An exciting new project, iThemba Clothing, is a range of wrap shwe shwe skirts and dresses, designed as alternative work wear for women employed as domestic workers and cleaning staff. The skirts are sewn by hand-machine by the seamstresses at “Tunga”, a community sewing project at Shakashead, Kwadukuza. The team behind iThemba Clothing started the project to create comfortable, practical working outfits that are more closely aligned with Africa. “A large percentage of women in South Africa are employed in homes, working to create better lives for their children and grandchildren, yet the choices of work wear seem strangely outdated. It is our hope that in some small way wearing an iThemba skirt will inspire dignity and respect for those that wear them.”

Auditory Perception

The pre-schooler’s ability to listen, analyse and remember improves considerably when he is three years of age. He starts to remember short stories that he has heard repeatedly and may try to recount them. He also learns simple songs and will sing along merrily with someone else. His ability to distinguish subtle differences in words (auditory discrimination) improves all the time. By the end of his third year he finds it is easier to repeat new words or works with subtle differences, such as gap and cap, correctly. He may, however, still mispronounce unfamiliar words that he has heard and may, for example, say, “… Jack fell down and brokisclown”. On the other hand, he may hear new words correctly but not understand them: “Draw a fall Mummy.” “A fall?” “Yes, the fall in Humpty Dumpty.”

In the previous year the pre-schooler started to remember consecutive numbers and commands (auditory sequential memory). Now at three and a half he makes fewer mistakes when he has to repeat three figures in sequence. Out of every three attempts he might make one mistake if he, for instance, had to repeat something like “7-2-9” in sequence. He can also remember and execute a command involving three or four items. For example, his mother may tell him to put away his car and soldier and bring her his face cloth and some soap. The three year old also remembers words in sequence and will start repeating simple rhymes. By the end of the year he can remember and repeat sentences with five or six syllables. For example, “The-chil-dren-areeating”.

All the items in your Nappy “Cake” are reusable and practical for any new mommy – from towelling nappies to teething rings. Any baby product you require can be added to your cake, and Tammy Atkinson can quote you on any additional extra you might want. Newborn Hearing Screening

Hearing loss is the most common birth defect and is estimated at affecting one in 1000 babies. The risk of hearing loss in babies is greater with low birth weight, prematurity, family history of hearing loss, jaundice and blood transfusions, Cytomegalovirus (CMV), hypoxia, ototoxic medication (e.g. Aminoglycoside antibiotics), Meningitis, mechanical ventilation, and Maternal German Measles (Rubella). Internationally, all babies are tested and South Africa endeavours to follow suit. Currently, hearing loss is being diagnosed in children at the age of 18 months to two years – causing severe speech, language, behavioural, social, cognitive and auditory skill developmental delays which otherwise may have been avoided with a hearing loss being diagnosed at birth and early intervention initiated. Children diagnosed, and intervention initiated by six months of age, have been known to develop speech and language skills on par with those of their hearing peers. All babies born at Parklands Hospital, whose caregivers have provided consent, will receive a hearing screening before being discharged. Lauren Thompson and/ or Kara Hoffman, qualified Audiologists, will perform the quick and painless test on the babies. The test performed is called a Transient Evoked Otoacoustic Emission (TEOAE), which takes up to one minute to complete. The paediatricians receive a report on the results of the test and the clinic charts are stamped with the applicable results. This service includes a screening test in the hospital, and a follow-up test if indicated. The medical aids are billed for the test directly at medical aid rates. Should you require any other information, or if your baby was born outside Parklands Hospital and you require a hearing test, please contact the Thompson & Hoffman practice. Tiny Life Nursery Design Advice Wendy Weir of Oki Doki Baby and Kids says when planning a nursery you need to take into account living in the nursery, because you are going to spend a lot of time there. Floor space is therefore valuable and you also need a comfortable chair. You can maximise floor space by putting the furniture against the walls and leaving a bigger space in the middle. Nursery design, although emotionally driven, has become more simplified with fewer pieces. People are conscious of doing a room that will grow with their kids, so that it can easily transition from infant to toddler. Do it now, advises Wendy, because it’s easier than the mess of building some wall shelves while the child is living in the room. Parents are being very price conscious, very aware that if they are going to pick a paint colour for the walls that it’s going to be a colour they know the kids can grow with. Wallpaper and a matching wallpaper border can seem so permanent so Wendy suggests using wall decals that you can just put on and take off instead. You can very inexpensively create the look of a wallpaper border with the decals and yet not be so permanent. Wendy advises saving money when it comes to your flooring and funky rugs but spending money when it comes to storage. You’re always going to need that no matter how old a child is. If you can afford to, do built-in storage wall shelves with a place to fit baskets and books. You’ll feel like your life is organised even though you haven’t slept for three days! Beesting’s First Tree Talk Lesson: Hearing with a Huffin Ear

STUDIO PORTRAITS & OUTDOOR PHOTOGRAPHY

As the wind blew gently with puffed cheeks through the branches, the tree of Much Hearing and Little Listening reached with his branches towards Beesting and the children. The branches were like long arms, the leaves like little butterflies reaching out to touch everyone. One little leaf fell on Saffy’s head – it looked quite funny.

Various Packages Available 082 560 7705 www.tarakelly.co.za

Huffin ears are hard of hearing, the tree continued. That is why Huffin ears hear very loud noises only – such as the cracking sound of heavy branches when a storm is coming. The branches moan and groan, and sound like they’re saying “Huuuuuurrrry up, quickly. Are you listening? There is much rain and wind coming everyone.” If you are outside and watch carefully you will notice that the birds then quickly hurry to their nests before the wind gets too strong for their little wings. Beesting held his paw closely to his ear and thought to himself for a moment, hmmmmmm, now I know. That is when Lolla would sometimes call him and say “Hurry Beesting, your kennel is a bit too small, there is a big storm coming, you can stay inside with Losh and me until the storm is over.” The minute Lolla opened the door Beesting would hurriedly make his way under their bed. That is because a storm usually goes with other strange language too – voices that say kaaabboooom, CRACK, gwarrrhhhh. Losh calls that loud voice thunder. In the meantime kids, think a bit. When Mom or Dad or teacher asks you to do something – do they need to talk in a loud voice, and moan and groan like the trees? Then you are listening with your Huffin ear!

Young Life Schoolbags and Your Child’s Spine

KING’S TOYS

Don’t wait for your child to complain about back and neck pain as a result of their schoolbag. Watch their posture and monitor the items loaded into their schoolbag. Experts recommend that children carry no more than 10 to 15 per cent of their body weight in their bags. However that is often not the case. According to the Con- Quality Wooden Toys 033 – 344 1996 sumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) www.kingswoodentoys.co.za more than 13,700 children, ages five to 18 years old, were treated in hospitals and by Chiropractors for injuries related to schoolbags. Choose a schoolbag that is an appropriate size for your child or use a rolling backpack as an alternative to carrying a heavy load on their shoulders.

Bringing the lessons to you wherever you are in Durban! 072 499 4702 You learn more than music, you learn an art!

Safety tips for reducing the pain and discomfort due to schoolbags: • Always use both shoulder straps to keep the weight of the backpack better distributed. • Tighten the straps and use the waist strap if the bag has one. • Remove or organise items if too heavy and place biggest items closest to the back. • Lift the bag up properly, by bending at the knees. • Carry only those items that are required for the day. Parents: • Encourage your child/ teenager to tell you about pain or discomfort that may be caused by a heavy schoolbag. • Purchase a backpack appropriate for the size of your child and look for any changes in your child’s posture when he wears the backpack. • Watch your child put on or take off the backpack to see if it is a struggle. Don’t ignore red marks on the shoulders. • If they develop pain get them assessed and treated by a Chiropractor.

Young Life Look After Your Hearing Shen Bettridge was stunned when The Big Favour with Damon Beard of East Coast Radio gave her son, Nathan, hearing aids absolutely free – and in the colour of his choice. “I had no idea I would hear such wonderful news,” said this mother of two. Nathan has Asperger’s Syndrome, and before he attended primary school he lost his high frequency hearing. People with highfrequency hearing loss can’t hear sounds in higher frequencies, such as the letters s, h and f. This made it hard for Nathan to understand speech in the classroom and socially.

Specialising in maternity, newborn, baby, family and lifestyle photography Tilanie 084 507 6332 | Anthony 084 250 2316 www.marshmallowimages.com info@marshmallowimages.com

His “muffled” hearing enhanced his anxiety and even made him feel physically ill. “Having his hearing ‘back’ really does bring about a sense of peace, wellbeing and feeling in control,” said Shen. Shen’s daughter also has a hearing problem – Auditory Processing Disorder. This refers to the process of how the brain takes in auditory information. Even though children with APD can hear well, they may have difficulty using those sounds in speech and language because their brain does not pick up the electrical signals coming from their ears. “As a mother who knows, I cannot stress enough how vital it is that parents keep on top of hearing screening. Hearing wellness must become a lifestyle. Today we are faced with the reality of dealing with a noisier world,” she said. Shen recently joined the team for raising Hearing Awareness, working alongside the LifesSound team which is associated with Janet Smith Inc at St Augustine’s Hospital. LifeSound is a holistic hearing retail concept, which includes LifeSound Pietermaritzburg. During the month of September LifeSound raised Hearing Wellness Awareness in the community by means of informative articles and presentations. Young Life Acceptance of Your Child An important aspect of rearing children is for them to understand that you accept them just as they are. Each child is special and unique. No two children are exactly the same and we need to look at each child, even those handicapped in some way or another, as special individuals with special abilities, looks and gifting. Parents often try and live their own lives through their children, but it is dangerous to neglect the natural abilities and talents of our unique children and to try and make them that tennis player or doctor we wanted to be.

Children who do not feel accepted just as they are, begin to feel rejected as they are never able to meet the standards expected of them. This often leads to discouragement and depression. Children who feel rejected often seek out friends who feel like they do. These are often children who are involved in high risk behaviour. It is essential that boys and girls feel accepted by both parents. Even if divorced it is important for the parents to keep encouraging and reassuring their children of their acceptance of them. Imagine how a child feels as they see Dad starting a new family without ever contacting them. This makes them feel so bad and of course, rejected.

Young Life A Morning with Hayley Walker • Classes 1 hr

Last week I went for my checkup with the per week delightful Dr Nagel. All is good and the babies are both just over two kilograms each • Ages 4 - 12 years so I am elated, but at the same time al- • All requirements most rendered useless. The discomfort I supplied feel in my lower back and ribs is hard to Contact Mark on put into words, so you can imagine my 083 778 3741 reluctance to attend a maternity photo for a FREE shoot I had organised a few weeks back.

lesson.

I had seen pictures on Facebook by photographer Hayley Walker that I absolutely loved. So I dropped her a mail and our shoot was booked. I arrived to a warm embrace of what felt like years of knowing and from then on, Hayley, who is pregnant with her third, and I just clicked. After a brief make-up session with the lovely Kerry I left looking refreshed, glowing and ready for action (thankfully not like a made-up shop mannequin). The signs of a 4.30am wake-up for a four-hour radio show were nowhere to be seen. The next 90 minutes were spent in front of Hayley’s comfortable lens. I had only known Hayley for less than an hour and I was more than happy to strip down and got ready for the shadow shots. We took some solo shots, some with Mike and me, then had some fun with Cooper and my Mum and Dad. The studio environment, as well as Hayley’s patience, really lets you shine. After receiving the first batch of photos I was beyond delighted! I am so thrilled I now have this exciting chapter of my life beautifully captured. I can’t wait for us to get together again – the next time will be with the twins!

Young Life Kinderkinetics

We specialise in helping children get complete control of their bodies

Kinderkinetics is a programme that involves the development in movement of a learner. It has a therapeutic, preventing and improving aspect designed to meet the specific needs of children after they have been scientifically evaluated. Programmes differ according to the individual needs of children as well as to their different ages and levels of skill. Because Kinderkinetics helps to correct, improve and maintain the physical development of babies, toddlers and young children, this in turn benefits the children’s health and total wellbeing. For general gross motor development the critical phase for stimulation is from birth to five years of age. Optimal perceptual motor development takes place from 36 months to seven years and fine motor development from birth to nine years. A lack of necessary motor stimulation can have an overwhelmingly negative effect on the child later in life, which will consequently lead to disabilities and limitations on various levels of development, such as motor skills, physical ability, psychosocial skills and emotional functioning.

Benefits of Kinderkinetics for schoolchildren: • Spatial orientation/body awareness (reading, spelling, mathematics). • Co-ordination (kicking and catching a ball, writing). • Vestibular functions (balancing, turning and swinging activities can be linked to all learning problems). • Reflex problems/ low muscle tone (animal walks, writing). • Bilateral integration (skipping and animal walks, reading, mathematics). • Auditive system (reading, spelling). • Visual system (reading, spelling, mathematics). • Other benefits: improved self-esteem, stronger muscles and bones, well-developed motor skills, positive approach to fitness, healthy appearance, leaner body. Kinderkinetics also addresses problems such as hyperactivity, perceptual disorders, hypo-tonicity, obesity. Young Life GoBooster Now this is what I call a fabulous idea! The GoBooster is the world’s only inflatable, high-backed booster seat and is now available in South Africa. When I received mine, conveniently packaged in a drawstring travel pouch and weighing just under 1kg, I couldn’t wait to test it out. It was quick and easy to inflate and position in the car, and once settled in my six year old helpfully informed me that it was very comfortable. The GoBooster has six shoulder-belt positions and adjustable safety clips and so can be positioned to fit each child perfectly over the chest, and not dangerously close to the neck. The unique lap belt guider keeps the lap belt positioned over your child’s upper legs protecting the stomach. Importantly, the GoBooster has been rigorously crash-tested to comply with strict U.S. vehicle safety standards and is approved for children between 15kg and 36kg.

Young Life Health Benefits of Rebounding (Trampolining) Win free entry for 2 adults, 2 kids, 2 pony rides and 2 feeds! Visit www.mumsmail.com to enter.

Rebounding/trampolining’s true appeal is that even when you bounce gently with both feet on the mat, you exercise every single cell in your body (muscles, organs, eyes, skin, tissue, bones etc). This makes it a phenomenal detox and cell regeneration programme, and in some circles rebounding is referred to as “cellular aerobics”.

(Prize valid for 3 months)

Jumping on trampolines aids the per- Silver Stirrup formance of the lymphatic system. The Riding School lymph performs a vital function and without healthy lymph function, our cells rapidly become susceptible to degeneration. A study called Lymphology demonstrates how and why rebounding works. In brief: our bodies’ 60 trillion cells are like little jellies, which should ideally sit snugly together in what Lymphologists call a “dry state”. There should be no excess fluid surClaire rounding the cells. Scientific studies have revealed that when our cells are in this 083 679 1870 “dry state”, loss of energy, disease and degeneration theoretically cannot happen. Our lymphatic system is responsible for removing excess fluid. If it stops functioning properly, fluid begins to collect or “pool” around our cells. This state is known as the “wet state” – and this is the environment in which disease and degeneration thrive. Unlike our heart which pumps blood throughout our body, the lymphatic system does not have a specific pump of its own. It relies on muscular contraction from movement and exercise, as well as gravitational pressure and deep breathing to work. When we’re active, we pump it. Linda Brooks, authority on Rebound Exercise and author of many Rebounding Books, claims that, “In just two minutes of Rebounding, the entire lymphatic system is flushed and the white blood cell count nearly triples, providing a greater defence system to destroy cancer cells.” Contact: Hannes Pieterse, S.A. Tweens & Teens’ Life

Fashion Camp for Teens Fashion Camp for Teens is a programme aimed at young girls aged 11 to 14 years of age. The “camp” gives them a general overview on skin care, hair care, nail care, make-up, fashion and general etiquette including cell phone and table etiquette. The candidates learn helpful tips such as packing a “healthy lunchbox” as well as some good exercise techniques to keep them “energised” at school. There is no focus on body image and it is an interactive workshop during which the girls meet other girls and learn relevant, practical skills. It is a very inspiring and positive course which leaves the girls full of self-esteem and confidence. The course accommodates 20 girls and is held at Quarters Hotel on Florida Road. The cost of the course is R850 per candidate and includes meals and workshop kits and goodie bags from other facilitators and sponsors. Fashion covers and discs are delivered to their schools (approximately four weeks after completion of the course). The next Fashion Camp Workshop takes place on 2 and 3 October, 8.30am – 2.30pm (Day 1) and 9am – 3pm (Day 2).

Educated Life Bullying Four o’ clock Friday (by John Foster) Four o’clock Friday, I am home at last. Time to forget the week that is past. On Monday in break they stole my ball, And threw it over the playground wall. On Tuesday afternoon, in games, They threw mud at me and called me names. On Wednesday, they trampled my books on the floor, So Miss kept me in because I swore. On Thursday, they laughed after the test, “’Cause my marks were lower than the rest.” Four o’clock Friday, at last I am free, For two whole days they can’t get me. Bullying is a very serious issue that can easily damage a child’s wellbeing – emotionally, socially or academically. Bullying is defined as any kind of ongoing physical or verbal mistreatment where there is unequal power between two or more people. It occurs when a person purposely and repeatedly holds power over another with the intent of hurting another. A wide range of physical or verbal behaviours can be described as bullying: insulting, teasing, verbally and physically abusing, threatening, humiliating, harassing, gossiping, spreading rumours, rejecting and excluding to list a few examples. Is your child being bullied? Are they battling to socially integrate or establish meaningful friendships? Children, especially younger children, don’t have the necessary skills to deal with bullying and often as a parent one does not know which way to turn in dealing with it. Chandre Ezra can help you and your child to deal more effectively with bullying. Contact: Chandre Ezra, 082 385 2989, chandreezra@telkomsa.net.

Educated Life Swimming: More than just an Extramural

SUNFIELD HOME SCHOOL FOR THE INTELLECTUALLY IMPAIRED LEARNER

Swimming is not merely a seasonal sport to be enjoyed socially or competitively. It is more than just an extramural – it is a very important life skill that is imperative for every child in South Africa to learn. Teaching children to save their own life so as to avoid becoming yet another statistic – so prevalent in our society – will go a long way in reducing drowning. Drowning is the highest incidence of accidents among children and babies in the world today.

Sunfield Home School provides an enriched educational programme for intellectually impaired children within a loving, disciplined, safe, secure, stable and happy school and home-from-home hostel environment, so that each child may realise his or her optimum potential. New admissions are done throughout the year. Please contact the school on 032 - 533 3632. www.sunfieldhomeschool.co.za

Supertube Extension

The Wave House extension to its already popular supertubes has been underway for some time and they are nearing the finish line! So what’s in store when the new slide opens? Say welcome to “Spaghetti Junction” – a 180m long tube ride! Your trip will begin in a two-story lift (yes you heard right, you need a lift to get to the top...). From there you’ll come out onto a first landing where a couple more stairs takes you to the top which is approximately 20m high. From this height you’ll have a bird’s eye view over most of Durban. You’ll slip into the funnel where your first 60m will give you complete darkness, and just when you’re about to ask yourself “Will I see light again?” you’ll drop down into the next 60m of translucent tubing, followed by the last 60m of open flume. What a ride! If you’re more interested in speed, then the new two-lane speed racer may be more to your liking. It’s 15m high with a sheer drop that can make you feel like you left your stomach behind! The racers sweep under a new deck and make you think you’re about to end up on the Gateway Hotel’s veranda only to head back and come to a gentle stop under the deck. If it’s birthday parties you’re after, the new deck will provide ample seating and space. There are two sessions: 10am – 1pm and 2pm – 5pm. Cost: R60 per child for entrance. R20 for adults viewing. For those that aren’t attending a party and just want to come through for the day, it’s R80 p.p. per day. P.S. the water is heated! Contact: 031 – 584 9400 to book a party.

My Boot Camp Party

My Boot Camp Party was torture and fun all rolled into one! As soon as we got there we were led off to a set of poles. If we stepped on these we ALL had to do 10 push-ups. After warming up we had to follow the Sergeant to the lethal “mud pit” where we leopard crawled through mud. This was called our “initiation!” There is a river right by the Boot Camp in which to rinse off but if you rinse off, straight away you have to do more push-ups. After the “initiation” we rolled around in the sand, leopard crawled under nets (where we all got cuts and scrapes on our knees), swung on ropes, ran through tyres, walked along a moving wooden pole while trying to stay on without falling, and one last thing… the net! This is a really high, orange net of string which we had to climb up and down. After all that we went and rinsed off in the river (with Megan’s takkie floating away!) and had my cake. At the end I got to make all the parents, friends and guests do 13 push-ups for my 13th birthday! I had a really awesome time and all my friends insisted that next year I have to give them a full pamper party in return for the torture! But they all had fun. Boot Camp offers unique, non-stop action birthday parties for children in the beautiful Giba Valley and under the watchful eye of dedicated instructors. Parties offered include: Commando Party, Paintball Party, Sniper Party, Commando-Paintball Party and Ranger Party. Time slots: 9am, 12pm and 3pm Saturdays; 10am and 1pm Sundays/public holidays; flexi times during the week.

Halloween at uShaka Marine World

Celebrating things that go “boo” by the sea, uShaka Marine World will once again make Halloween a thrilling family experience. Visit uShaka’s brand new “House of Fear” in the Village Walk designed by Greg King of KicksArt Theatre Productions. The house is complete with creaky doors, coffins, ghoulish characters and plenty of blood and gore to get you into the uShaka “spirit” this Halloween (R30, from 29 September to 28 October). Please note: not for children under 13. The freakish festivities will last the entire month culminating in three events at the end of the month. On Friday 26 October at 7pm, Wet ‘n Wild will transform into a freakish party zone where under 18s can party up a storm until the wee hours with UParty jocks Dean Fuel, Euphonik, Niskerone and Spindoctor (R110 for normal entry, R250 for VIP). Then, two magical dolphin shows on 27 and 28 October at 4pm will provide plenty of wicked family fun (R100 for adults and children under 12, free for children under three). Trick-or-treaters can expect a welcome from a motley crew of “ghoulish” hosts. The wacky uShaka Pied Piper (Brian Hiles – synonymous with the very best children’s theatre) will hand out goodie bags.

Relaxed Life On Top of the World at Moses Mabhida Stadium Known both locally and internationally as Durban’s premium entertainment venue, Moses Mabhida Stadium is not only an iconic landmark on the city’s skyline, it’s also got something for everyone to enjoy. As the only stadium in South Africa that’s open seven days a week with loads of great activities for the whole family, it comes as no surprise that it’s one of Durban’s most popular venues for all things exciting. The Adventure Walk is one of the stadium’s main attractions – for good reason. Inspired by the Y-shape pattern of the South African flag, the 500-step arch is 350m long and 30 storeys (106m) high. For only R90 p.p., groups of up to nine people over the age of 10 can walk up and down this spectacular arch to admire beautiful views. Visitors are also issued with safety equipment and are accompanied by a qualified instructor to ensure that they are safe at all times. For those who’d like to relax, the SkyCar offers a quick two-minute ride to the viewing platform, where visitors can experience 360º views of the city, the warm Indian Ocean and its stunning surrounds. At just R55 per adult, R30 for children under 12 and free entrance for children under the age of six, the SkyCar is an easy, affordable activity that the whole family can enjoy.

Hilton Country Estate & Spa

Nestled in the hills of Hilton you will find the hidden gem, Hilton Country Estate & Spa. This family-owned B&B has been in the Hilcove family for 29 years and is currently run by Greg Hilcove. I was fortunate enough to spend a night there in July with a very special friend visiting from London. Our room, the “Lavish Suite”, was beautifully decorated and contained a fireplace that was lit as soon as we arrived in the early afternoon. Out came the sherry and, dare I say, the trilogy everyone is reading at the moment... Late afternoon we walked around the estate and were shown the beautiful spa and gym. Oh how I wished I had booked a few treatments! The spa stocks the Africology and Skinsphere ranges and is very popular amongst the locals. The estate is 55 acres and offers a 3km trail walk. Sadly I didn’t attempt this as I left my walking shoes at home. Dinner was a gourmet experience (starters, mains and desserts) with each course being a culinary delight of different flavours and beautifully presented. Breakfast was also delicious and very generous. The view from the dining area overlooking the whole of Pietermaritzburg is stunning. Spoilt for choice, each of the 12 rooms is decorated beautifully with stylish touches that make you feel so welcome. The B&B sleeps 22 people. As well as a night away for the family, the Hilton Country Estate & Spa is an ideal venue for small intimate weddings.

Martin Sigamoney has drawn on Durban’s finest to put together a 10 piece live band, including a smoking hot brass section. The musicians are from all walks of life; from well-known Durban Trombone player Mario Montereggee in his 70s most well-known for heading up Durban band Music Unlimited all through the 80s and 90s. You can be sure to be well entertained as this band performs hits from the old style evergreens.
