Sanlam: Ladies, are you still hoping Prince Charming will arrive on your doorstep tomorrow and whisk you away to a life of material comfort where you’ll never again have to worry about the grocery bill or the electricity account or your children’s school fees? Or have you made peace with the fact that, as a woman, you’re likely to play a critical role in your family’s finances? Women who delegate the responsibility of financial planning to their spouses often find themselves at sixes and sevens when they are caught off guard by unexpected life events like divorce or the death of a spouse or retrenchment. “This is why a serious annual review of your financial planning is critical to ensure that you plan constructively for as much as you possibly can, and to ensure that your family has peace of mind as far as personal cover and savings and investments for their future are concerned – whether you’re the sole breadwinner or not.” Visit www.sanlam.co.za. Laidback Life September Book & DVD Reviews BOOKS FOR CHILDREN: • Ladybird Favourite Stories for Boys contains well-known fairy stories including the meaningful “The Pied Piper of Hamelin”, the sweet “The Elves and the Shoemaker” and the entertaining “Town Mouse and Country Mouse.” Ladybird Favourite Stories for Girls offers the evergreen “Cinderella”, the wishful “The Magic Porridge Pot” and the story of poor “Hansel and Gretel”. Both are in beautiful covers, contain eight stories each and would make ideal Christmas gifts. Published by Ladybird, an imprint of Penguin. DVD FOR CHILDREN: • Hugo is the touching and intriguing story of a young boy named Hugo, orphaned and left alone to manage a group of clocks at a train station in 1930s Paris. Hugo befriends a girl called Isabelle and together the pair uncovers the true story of a strange “automaton”, and in the process heals a number of past hurts. The story is peopled by varied and amusing characters and is beautifully and memorably told. A lovely family movie – highly recommended. A NuMetro release. BOOKS FOR ADULTS: • Criminal is a fabulous blood-and-guts murder mystery by the suitably named author, Karin Slaughter. Policewomen, Amanda Wagner and Evelyn Mitchell, and policeman, Will Trent, appear in this past and present tale of a sick murderer responsible for the deaths of some oddly connected prostitutes. Good character development, personal issues and linked plot lines make this an engaging read. Published by Random House Struik. • Through the Crimson Mirror is a young man’s reflection on his upbringing and his views on how parenting could be improved. Lessons to parents include teaching their children life skills, seeing failure as natural, being open with their offspring about drugs and sex, giving practical career guidance, working at proper communication with their kids, being aware of their own non-verbal communication and being truthful. Books are available from the author, Daniel Dinnie. Contact him at daniel.dinnie.book@gmail.com. WIN WIN WIN Mum’s Mail has 1 copy of each book & DVD and 3 copies of Through the Crimson Mirror to give away. Visit www.mumsmail.com to enter.

Everyday Life Oakridge College “Children are organic and constantly changing. Schools therefore need to be organic environments too.” (Daryl Franks, Oakridge College). Oakridge College is a small private high school in Durban North. The school has two classes per grade, Grade 8 – 12 (with the exception of Grade 11 which has three classes), and each class takes a maximum of 12 students. This means that students who get frustrated with the slow pace and wasting of time in bigger schools (e.g. with multiple assemblies per week), can be extended. It also means that slower students receive individual attention. Whilst the school does not offer a sport programme, students who have outside commitments (e.g. national swimmers, top surfers) are accommodated and an academic programme can be tailored around their needs. In the same vein, certain learners at the school who struggle to write have been permitted to do exams by computer. Oakridge also has a very special Language Department. Students for whom English is a second language (e.g. Russian, Chinese, German and African students) are accommodated and helped to gradually fit into first language classes. Mainline academic subjects are offered with an emphasis on Maths, Science, Biology and Business Studies and the curriculum has been recently changed so that all courses lead to a Bachelor’s pass (i.e. not just a Senior Certificate). Oakridge has a particularly dedicated body of teachers (13 in total), headed by Daryl Franks. Teacher absenteeism is very low. The school recently acquired the property next door to its current location and has painted and renovated its classrooms. All classrooms, with the exception of three, are air-conditioned. Dad’s Life Life Healthcare Sharks Medical Centre With the muscle of home-grown rugby super brand, The Sharks, behind them, the recently opened Life Healthcare Sharks Medical Centre now brings global best practices in sports medicine within reach of the public in KZN. Headed up by Dr Glen Hagemann, the new sports medicine facility on the premises of Mr Price Kings Park, integrates an enviable talent of experts to provide a fully-integrated service which includes diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of sport injuries, as well as their prevention. One of the major objectives of the medical centre is to provide a single, standardised and integrated medical management structure which provides services to The Sharks, The Sharks Academy, schools and clubs. Hagemann and The Sharks current team doctor Ewoudt van der Linde handle the consulting, with specialist services in the form of biokinetics, physiotherapy, sports massage therapy and sports dietetics also offered. In addition to being a centre of rugby medical excellence, cardiac and orthopaedic rehabilitation as well as Kinderkinetics and executive wellness assessments are available. The facility is the “nerve centre” for other satellite clinics around the province, the first of which has recently opened in Hillcrest. It also forms the administration hub for the established Discovery Sharksmart injury prevention and performance programme. Life Healthcare is the official hospital group of choice of The Sharks Medical Centre. “The combined expertise of Life specialists and The Sharks Medical Centre team will also provide a winning formula for patients requiring cardiac and orthopaedic rehabilitation,” says Leanne Nyiri, Regional Marketing Manager for Life Healthcare, KZN. The Life Healthcare Sharks Medical Centre is located in Isaiah Ntshangase Road (the old Walter Gilbert Road) alongside the entrance to the ticket office and The Shark Cage. Dad’s Life The School Project When I left school in 1977 I vowed I would never return to the tyranny of homework and school projects. Michaela was born 20 years later, and less than a decade after that the school project has reared its ugly head again. Michaela’s present school project is not the play dough Tyrannosaurus Rex or papier mâché volcano reminiscent of my education. The school projects of the 70s were lame attempts to get students to do something with their hands instead of playing records all afternoon. Today’s school projects, judging by one of Michaela’s project outlines, are an attempt to equip students for Doomsday. Yes, the “EconoCity” project requests the use of a solar panel, a regulator and 12-volt battery and an inverter to be wired up to power a miniature city equipped with a “hot house”, a cooling system, a small fountain and irrigation system, solarpowered alarm system and, last but not least, a solar-powered remote controlled electric car.

Race Calendar

What on earth is a 14 year old supposed to do with such a school project? Did we unwittingly spawn a generation of geeks? Are they BBMing their way to technological world domination right under our noses? I also fear the school teachers might be taking the 21/12/2012 Environmental Meltdown too seriously. Someone ought to tell them that in the event of a meteorite colliding with Eskom by year end it could only improve things at this stage.

I was still scoffing about the whole thing when Michaela casually mentioned that first prize is R8500. This morning I called a solar energy specialist. If Michaela had a couple of these projects per month all our maintenance expenses would be resolved. Heck, we might even be able to live on her winnings… By Simon Stengel.

Business Life “And They Lived Happily Ever After...”

KWAZULU-NATAL SO CIETY FOR THE BLIND A Proudly South African Organisation

Some dreams are just harder to realise than others and we can’t go through life hoping things will work out the way we dreamed. It is one thing to be optimistic, but we need to balance that optimism with reality. An overwhelming number of marriages end in divorce, more often than not because of finances. While still paying off loans for the fairytale wedding, some couples are shouldered with an added burden of mounting legal costs in a divorce. If that isn’t enough, there is also the division of assets.

The platform for members to network, promote their business, get ideas and obtain referrals. Next meeting: Fri 28 September Only R75 for members and R100 for visitors. roxanne@inspiringwomen.co.za

Marriage in Community of property is not to be taken lightly. Even in the event that your marriage does last, is your spouse in business? Does he anticipate starting one? Is he planning to acquire some new assets? What happens if that business does a nose dive or he is unable to repay that asset? Being married in Community of Property means you are jointly and severally indebted, which means that, in addition to losing the business or the asset, you now lose your creditability, your possessions and are left wide open to any other creditor to take what you have worked so hard to acquire. A contract is one way of minimising your risk, something that no-one else can take responsibility for but you. So if you are planning a wedding or have already taken the plunge, let’s ensure that the “Happily Ever After” is guaranteed for at least one of you.

Business Life Divorcing and Dividing

Roger Knowles Attorney

When a marriage ends, there is usually a sharing of material things. The bounty may include household goods, vehicles, pension funds, savings, and fixed property, including the family home.

Divorce & Family Law Only in Durban North

How the sharing takes place depends on the rules applying to the particular marriage. If married in community of property, the couple should split the nett assets equally between them. If they had an antenuptial contract and the accrual system applies, there is a formula that governs the sharing. Some assets may have been excluded, or perhaps a value of assets at commencement of the marriage was excluded. Whatever – it should be a fairly simple accounting exercise. However, divorce is rarely simple, never calm and not often fair. Divorce involves emotional upheaval which complicates everything. When it comes to money, it’s like spraying petrol on a fire – angry, upset and jealous feelings blur the minds of the parties – theirs, and those of their lawyers. Suspicion sharpens their sense of survival. Greed feeds the flames. It only takes one unreasonable, crazy person to turn the whole thing into a nasty, drawn-out and expensive battle. There is a desperate need for calm, measured, thinking. How is this possible? Time often leads to reasonableness. As the emotions level out and the legal costs soar, logic forces the warring parties to see sense – or to give in. But, there is a better way. Mediation – negotiation with a referee – should take place as soon as possible. The mediator, provided this is a trained professional (not Uncle Fred or a well-meaning friend), will have the skills required to guide parties to calmer waters. More than 80% of disputes sent to mediation are settled. Costs, money and unpleasantness are reduced.

Wedgewood Nougat is a family business that started in the Walters’ family kitchen in 1999 with no capital, an inspired Mum, a supportive Dad, three badly dressed sons and an amazing nougat recipe. From humble roots selling to the local Saturday Farmers’ Market in Pietermaritzburg, Wedgewood now exports to over 12 countries, including New York, London, Paris and Moscow.

Saturday 29th September 8am - 1pm Hellenic Community Centre, 6 High Grove, Umgeni Park, Durban North

“This exciting journey Wedgewood Nougat has taken us on has only been possible because of the support we have received from fellow South Africans and government,” says Paul, youngest son and Marketing Manager. “S.A is not only the best place to be right now, but as a SMME (Small Medium Micro Enterprise) you also receive awesome support and benefits.” Paul remembers fondly his first international marketing trip to the 2006 SIAL trade show in Paris that was funded by the DTI (Department of Trade and Industry) EMIA support programme. Since then the DTI has funded another six international trade shows which has helped develop Wedgewood’s international sales from 0% to 20% of their total income and generated 18 new jobs in the factory. Support for SMME’s does not stop there. Wedgewood Nougat has also enjoyed the support from the DTI expansion incentive grant and the Foodbev SETA. Again, it is an ideal opportunity for schools and businesses to get involved. The focus of a cleanup can vary according to the needs of the community and may involve clubs and schools working together to clean up beaches, waterways, parks, streets, verges and play areas. More Ways to Clear the Air Nobody likes stale, unpleasant odours, but if you are still using traditional air fresheners then you are getting more than you bargained for with every whiff. Traditional air fresheners contain potentially toxic chemicals that fill your home with unnatural and artificial scents. Instead of breaking down and neutralising odours, they simply mask the smell. These unnatural substances can cause allergic reactions, trigger asthma and irritate lungs. Spray fresheners don’t disappear into thin air. The chemicals linger on, staying in the home as they land on and sink into furniture and carpets. Suddenly the air doesn’t smell so sweet anymore. Choose green options that come in nonaerosol sprays and are biodegradable. Eco-friendly plant-based fresheners offer a variety of benefits. Try Better Earth’s Natural Air Freshener; it has a subtle scent of lavender and grapefruit that contains no harmful chemicals. Alternatively make your own by filling a spray bottle with purified or distilled water and add several drops of organic essential oils. Lemon, orange and lavender are popular scents for freshening the home. The simplest, most effective way to clear the air inside your home is to open the windows to allow for a lot of circulating air. Other natural alternatives include using: • Baking soda to absorb odours naturally. Place a little in a saucer throughout the home. • White vinegar. It removes odours naturally on surfaces and in the air. Fighting odours with earth-friendly, natural and organic air fresheners is safer and healthier for people, pets and the environment.

RE/MAX Continues to Successfully Sell Distressed Property

SUPPLIERS AND INSTALLERS OF QUALITY BLINDS VERTICAL, VENETIAN, BAMBOO, WOOD, PLASWOOD, OUTDOOR, PICTURE BLINDS Free Sample Presentation Free Quotation Competitve Prices Custom Made Blinds 2 Year Guarantee Durban - Tracey 073 044 5554 tracey@blindsetc.co.za JHB - Mahlon 082 330 1223 mahlon@blindsetc.co.za

While the property market has continued to strengthen in the last few quarters, distressed properties are still very much a reality in our country. This is why RE/MAX of Southern Africa continues to put emphasis on training its agents to handle this specialised kind of sale in a professional and efficient manner. At the moment over 600 RE/MAX agents have completed the Certified Distressed Property Expert Professional Designation (CDPE) and are equipped to deal with the complex issues surrounding a distressed property sale. The internationally acclaimed course was launched exclusively to RE/MAX offices in January last year and is delivered under licence of the Charfen Institute based in the USA. The CDPE course focuses on the options and alternatives that professionally trained agents can offer homeowners who have found themselves at the point where they can no longer afford the bond repayments. Often, homeowners in financial difficulty avoid seeking help and can end up losing their property and tarnishing their credit record. Not reaching out is probably the worst thing they can do. The sooner a homeowner gets help, the better the chance they have of selling their property before repossession by the financial institution that granted them finance. Statistics show that RE/MAX of Southern Africa agents who have been marketing distressed properties have managed to sell them within a 45-day period on average and are achieving an average selling price of 91% of the asking price. There has also been a considerable increase in the number of offers that have been presented to the bank being accepted. This is largely due to the fact that the CDPE trained agents are selling these properties for the best market-related value.

Home Life Trampolining/Rebounding is Phenomenal Rebounding, otherwise known as bouncing on a trampoline, is a bit like the “Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing” of the exercise world. It looks like an activity with simple benefits – but nothing could be further from the truth. We all grew up watching children enjoying jumping on beds, couches, trampolines and in general anything that has a bit of spring. Why is that? International research has found that the mild but continuous Gforce created by bouncing offers far-reaching benefits that go way beyond exercise. It not only makes you fit, tones your body and assists with weight loss, but when done properly, it is one of the most effective ways to boost your lymphatic system, detoxify your body, boost your immune system and add value to the development of intellectual abilities. For years, medical institutions have been singing praises for its health benefits – with endorsements from research institutions including NASA. They did a study on rebounding (trampolining) and called it a “miracle exercise“, finding it to be 68% more effective than walking or running on a treadmill without the impact on joints. Albert E. Carter, Olympic athlete/coach, medical journalist and lifelong researcher (with institutions that include the Special Forces, Olympic training facilities and the Hong Kong police force) has claimed rebounding (trampolining) to be “the most effective exercise yet devised by man”. Director of recreational sports at the University of Minnesota, Pat Mueller, declared rebounding to be the “the exercise of the future”. He said, “I’ve seen a lot of sports fads come and go, but this thing (rebounder) is phenomenal”. Contact: Hannes Pieterse, S.A. Trampoline, 083 235 7074, 012 – 548 6809, www.satrampoline.co.za.

Healthy Life World Suicide Prevention Day - 10 September Teenage Depression and Suicide Depression in young people can range from a momentary feeling of sadness which does not tend to interfere much with their daily lives, to cases where the depressed mood persists over a longer period of time. This manifests in loss of interest in previously pleasurable activities, diminished energy, difficulties concentrating, altered sleeping and eating patterns and negative perceptions about the self. Although depression can affect anyone, teenagers tend to be more at risk if they have a close relative who has struggled with depression or if they are facing a stressful life event such as loss of a relationship, family conflict, relocating etc. It is also important to note that stresses that may seem trivial to adults may be very important to teenagers and should therefore be taken seriously. Other signs include sudden mood swings, uncharacteristic passivity or lashing out, withdrawal or a tendency to isolate themselves, risk-taking behaviour, preference for music with depressive/death-related themes, decline in grades, irritability etc. Other teens who may be at risk for suicide include those who have perfectionist tendencies, are loners, struggle with feelings Dr Deseré Ferreira of rejection or are easily frustrated. General Practitioner Look out for changes in personality or attitude, physical appearance and dress, reluctance to talk about the future, giving away personal possessions etc. Never make light of “death talk”. Some suicidal teenagers hint about their thoughts in conversations. Others may hint of their intentions through behaviour such as scratching or marking their bodies. Always take suicide threats seriously, probe further asking questions about details. If you suspect risk, professional intervention is of utmost importance. Do not leave your teen alone but ensure that he/she is supervised at all times.

Healthy Life The Importance of Hearing It is said, that come the day of reckoning, the last thing we lose is our sense of hearing. Why is it, then, that our sense of hearing is what we value the least? Hearing loss is often seen as an “older” person’s problem. This is a common misconception, but possibly one of the main reasons we wait so long to admit that there is a problem. It takes people an average of 10 to 15 years to act on their hearing loss. The longer the hearing loss is left, and the worse it becomes, the more the brain changes for the worse and the harder it is to take the simple steps to address the loss. But those of us who address our hearing loss early and use the technology available, such as hearing-aid instrumentation and computer-training programmes, gain far more benefit and satisfaction than those who leave it for years. Hearing solutions are no longer bulky items. Today’s high-tech hearing instruments are virtually invisible, intelligent microcomputers. They are tiny in size and enormous in impact. Overwhelming evidence shows that the use of a hearing instrument brings major improvement to the quality of life of its users. These people experience better general overall health and wellbeing than non-users with hearing loss, gain self-confidence, play a more active role in family, social and business activities and even have greater earning power. Hearing is a gift to be valued and should be maintained at all costs. September is Hearing Health Awareness month – make sure you look after your hearing health and that of your family’s. Skin Doctor Q & A

Question: My son is 13 years old and he has dark skin on the sides of his neck. Despite cleaning the area, the area remains dark. What causes this? Mrs Moodley. Answer: It seems that your son has a condition called Acanthosis Nigricans. This refers to a velvety dark texture of the skin on the sides of the neck as well as in the armpits and inner thighs. It may be due to genetic factors, weight gain or underlying hormonal imbalances such as insulin resistance or Cushings Syndrome.

The skin becomes thickened and darkens due to stimulation of growth factor receptors by hormones like insulin. It is not dirt, and scrubbing the area may make the condition worse. A proper assessment needs to be made to exclude underlying causes. Readers, SMS your questions to: 34877, using the keyword “skindoctor mm” followed by your name and question. SMS costs R2. Healthy Life Eye Care Awareness Month How important is an eye test? Regular eye tests are important because your eyes don’t usually hurt when something is wrong. Deterioration can take a long time and can be left unnoticed before major damage occurs. Routine yearly eye exams are important – regardless of your age or your physical health. During a comprehensive eye exam, the optometrist does much more than just determine your prescription for spectacles or contact lenses. They will also check your eyes for common eye diseases, assess how your eyes work together as a team, check that the intra-ocular pressure is safe and evaluate your eyes as an indicator of your overall health. Optometrists are often the first health care professionals to detect chronic systemic diseases such as high blood pressure and diabetes, but it is recommended that these readings are checked by your G.P. for early detection before damage has occurred to your eyes. Who should get their eyes examined? Adults should have their eyes tested every two years to keep their prescriptions current and to check for early signs of eye disease such as glaucoma and cataracts. Regular child eye tests play an important role in ensuring normal visual development and academic achievement. Vision is closely linked to the learning process. Children with undetected vision problems will often have trouble with their schoolwork. Many times, children will NOT complain of vision problems simply because they don’t know what “normal” vision looks like. As children grow, their eyes can change in length and shape, which affects the power of spectacles they may require. Hormones also play a huge role in eye changes. Children need to have a visual test every two years unless the optometrist advises more regular testing. Contact: Tracy Watson, Rahm & Friderichs Optometrist, 032 – 525 4682.

Healthy Life National Oral Health Month How to brush and floss: The best way to take care of your mouth is to brush and floss twice a day. This helps remove the sticky film called plaque that collects on teeth and gums. Plaque makes acids and toxins that can damage your teeth and gums. Using a mouthwash can also help fight plaque. If you’re not sure what kinds to use, ask your dental team. Here are some ways to get the most out of your brushing routine: • Brush for at least two minutes twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste. Pay special attention to your back teeth which may have more plaque on them. • Use a toothbrush with soft bristles. Bush with gentle strokes so you don’t wear away your gums or teeth. • Change your toothbrush every three months. Bristles that are worn remove less plaque. • Brush your tongue to help freshen your breath. Brush from back to front using a gently sweeping Dr Paul Darby-Wade motion.

Dentist

Flossing helps keep teeth and gums healthy. Flossing every day removes plaque along the gum line and between teeth. To floss correctly, follow these steps: • Wind floss around your middle fingers. • Use your thumbs and index fingers to guide floss between teeth. • Wrap the floss around the sides of each tooth, making a “C” shape. This will help ensure that you get between gums and teeth. • Check your gums in the mirror while flossing. Your gums should be firm and pink. If they are red, swollen or bleeding see your dental team. • Don’t stop flossing if your gums bleed. Flossing improves gum health and helps them stop bleeding.

Healthy Life Life Coaching with a Twist

Dr Megan Medina

Life Coaching is all about setting lifechanging goals and achieving them. Now most people will say, “I can do that - I don’t need the help of a Life Coach.” Why is it, then, that 90% of these people don’t achieve their goals? The magic ingredient is: Accountability. When you enrol with a Life Coach you are constantly accountable to your Coach. Because of this, you need to make sure you have achieved your tasks for the week. As a result, Coaching is not about digging up the past but about constantly moving forward towards where you want to be. The Coach provides structure and support on your journey towards your goal attainment. Caryn Loudon, a Life Coach, has now introduced a Coaching Workshop. People can attend this workshop with a friend/partner that they trust and can confide in. Caryn provides attendees both with the tools they need to Coach and to be coached. The workshop and process is fun and exciting and at the same time productive.

Healthy Life Scoliosis in Children Back Week 3 to 9 September Scoliosis is an abnormal curving of the spine that goes largely undetected in children and teenagers. People with scoliosis have a spine that curves too much and the spine may look like the letter “C” or “S.” Congenital scoliosis is present at birth and occurs when the baby’s ribs or spine bones do not form properly. Idiopathic scoliosis is the most common type and is grouped by age. In children three years and younger, it is called infantile scoliosis. In children aged four to 10, it is called juvenile scoliosis. In older kids, 11 to 18 years, it is called adolescent scoliosis. Scoliosis most often affects girls. Curving generally gets worse during a growth spurt and there are usually no symptoms, but symptoms may include: • Backache or low-back pain. • Tired feeling in the spine after sitting or standing for a long time. • Uneven hips or shoulders (one shoulder may be higher than the other). • Spine curves more to one side. Special Interests: An X-ray is required to accurately measure • Scholastic and behaviour problems • Parenting issues the degree of the curving of the scoliosis • Infant and child assessments • ADD & ADHD and a physical exam will be performed • Personal growth • Trauma & anxiety • Depression & grief which may show one shoulder higher than • Relationship difficulties the other, a tilted pelvis or greater muscle 031 - 822 4466 or 084 210 1760 mass on one side. Healthy Life Stroke Week: 12 to 16 September

Open: Mon - Sun

Mini Strokes A mini stroke, also called a TIA or Transient Ischaemic Attack, occurs when part of the brain is temporarily deprived of blood and therefore oxygen. This leads to outward signs such as difficulty in speaking or moving an arm or leg on one side of the body. These symptoms may last just a few minutes or for up to a few hours, but by definition they disappear in under 24 hours. Of great concern is that a large percentage of people who suffer a mini stroke end up suffering a major stroke within months.

Unwind & Relax @ The Protea Hotel Umhlanga Ridge • FREE reflexology with any specialised Neostrata Exuviance facial R350. This rejuvenating and revitalising facial includes a double exfoliation, a paraffin wax hand treatment and a heavenly signature facial massage. • Indulge in a hot oil full body massage & herbal compress & receive a complimentary express pedi R450 • Stressed executive – soothe and relax tense muscles with our power 30 min head, back & shoulder massage R150 • Little princess & teen organic facials R150

Symptoms: • Any sudden facial weakness/distortion, e.g. one side of the mouth drooping. • Any sudden loss of limb movement. • Sudden disturbed or slurred speech, confusion or difficulty understanding. • Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes. • Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance. • Sudden, severe headache. What You Can Do: A high percentage of strokes can be prevented through adopting a healthy lifestyle, and awareness is key. Having regular health assessments can help to determine if you are at risk. If you do have high blood pressure, diabetes, high blood cholesterol or are overweight, you will need to work with a health practitioner to take action to keep them in a healthy range. Being physically active and exercising regularly, as well as adopting a healthy diet and limiting alcohol consumption will also reduce your risk. Also crucial is avoiding cigarette smoke and exposure to secondhand smoke. If you smoke, seek help to stop now.

5 FREE Head, Neck & Back Massages up for grabs! SMS your name, cell & email address to 071 869 5114 (normal rates apply)

Healthy Life The Healing Plan We all know of friends or colleagues who have died of cancer, heart disease or one of the many other life-threatening diseases which may affect us as we grow older. Does this have to be? John will show from personal experience how you can have “perfect health” without sickness, worry or disease. “Cancer - I was told on two separate occasions I required prostate surgery; I declined as I was aware of the dangers and implications and therefore effected my own cancer treatment. In less than three months I was in perfect health and remain so to this day,” said John. As you implement “The Healing Plan” you will begin to “slow the ageing process”. Thus a natural “weight loss” also takes place, with visible improvements in skin, hair, eyes and nails as they show the changes taking place in every cell of your body. Healing with Hypnosis – John has over 50 life-enhancing titles offering therapy and healing in most areas of your life, including emotional and personal problems. “The Healing Plan” explains the practical benefits of hypnosis, including Hypnosis and Healing, Weight Control and Pain Management.

Consumed by many sportsmen and sportswomen, including cyclists, runners and body builders, as well as businessmen on the run, Healthies Square is the ideal meal replacement before and after training or weight watching. She then teamed up with fellow gym guru and consultant, Antoine De Chalain, who introduced the product to the general public and professional athletes. Within weeks the product became a must-have and was sold from the Health Store. Facts on the Healthies Squares: • Used by World Junior Body Building Champion • Used by a KZN mountain biker placed in the top 10 in S.A. 30-day shelf life in cool environment, 60 days in a fridge and six months if frozen. Impression Image Management

Nail & Beauty Spot

Image consultant, Claire Jaqueline, visited the Mum’s Mail offices recently to give styling advice to the ladies on staff. Young and vibrant, and good with different types of people, Claire explained how each person could define and best display their individual styles, whether “natural”, “dramatic”, “classic” etc. She then colourcoded each person, working out whether their skin had a warm or cool undertone and which colours would enhance that tone. An interesting face-shape analysis followed, as did a figure analysis, with tips on what types of hairstyles and clothing styles to wear for each shape and figure. Claire finished up with a make-up application on one lucky lady. Here’s what some of the staff had to say about the informative morning:

Get Your Skin Ready for Spring While you may have a renewed spring in your step at the prospect of warmer weather, it’s likely your skin may still be suffering the effects of winter. Dry, rough and scaly spots on your feet, elbows and knees are common and your skin could be feeling undernourished. Many of us tend not to moisturise as much during winter because the feet and legs aren’t on display as much as they are during warmer months. It unfortunately doesn’t take long for skin that is neglected to become dry, flaky and dull. You may also be suffering from keratosis on the backs of your arms and thighs (little bumps resembling chicken skin) which can be helped by exfoliating. By using Naturals Beauty White Sugar Scrub you will buff away all the rough, flaky skin and moisturise your body! It’s also excellent for cellulite and for those suffering with bad circulation. Grapefruit oil is useful for more than just fighting cellulite and boosting your lymphatic system - it positively affects your mood and revives the mind while stimulating the digestive system. Lemongrass has great benefits as a muscle and skin toner and revitalises the body and mind. Ginger has warming qualities which are good to use for its energising properties. It also helps with poor circulation. To use White Sugar Scrub: massage onto clean moist skin. Rinse. Avoid contact with freshly shaved skin. A 250ml tub costs R77. Alice Leah, Editor of Mum’s Mail tried out the scrub. She had this to say: “ Simply divine, I cannot live without it. Yummy!”

Bridal Preparation Planning a wedding is exciting! Whether you’ve secured the services of a wedding planner or have opted to enjoy the journey by yourself, be sure to include a professionally guided medical skin treatment programme into the timeline and budget. Looking your absolute best can be surprisingly simple with the right tools in the hands of a skilled professional. Dr Ally, who trained both in South Africa and Canada, will guide you through the process. Three to four months before: Having trouble fitting into that exquisitely crafted gown? Minimally invasive surgical laser liposuction might be just the ticket to literally sculpt away stubborn pockets of fat. Downtime is minimal (you’ll be back into “planning” action within one/two days) and results are fantastic! Final results are usually seen after 12 weeks. Two to three months before: Now is the time to commence medical peels to achieve radiant dewy skin on your special day. Depending on the condition of your skin, targeted treatments are usually done every two weeks. Several problems can be tackled simultaneously, from simple dry skin and fine lines, to acnescarred, hyperpigmented and blotchy skin. Dr Ally’s medical-grade peels (Neostrata and Lamelle ranges) contain a host of different products to choose from. Dermaroller treatments are also a great way of delivering serums and products deeper into the skin (these need to be customised for every individual). One to two months before: Banish that frown with the magic of Botox. Plump up your cheeks, or just define your lip line with a bit of filler. These treatments have been around for more than two decades and now everybody can enjoy wrinklefree, rested, happy faces. Contact: Dr Ally’s Vein and Medical Aesthetics Clinic, 032 – 586 3223, info@drallys.co.za.

A baby’s brain grows rapidly at this stage and it is essential to ensure he gets the right nutrients to aid this growth. According to research from the World Health Organisation, babies fed on breastmilk tend to have significantly better visual alertness and cognitive skills. Experts attribute this benefit to an essential fatty acid present in breastmilk called Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA), the Omega 3 fatty acid essential for brain development. To create little Einsteins out of our babies we need to “feed” the brain from the beginning and DHA is essential brain food for babies. Bursting with flavour, Purity Gold jars are made from a perfect blend of farm fresh South African ingredients, all cooked in the jar to keep the goodness sealed in. The new Purity Gold jars, made with little tummies in mind are available in seven delicious variants for two essential stages of a baby’s development: Stage Two (Apple & Sweet Potato Mash; Vegetables, Chicken, Apple & Mango; Peach & Banana), Stage Three (Blueberry, Guava & Yoghurt; Mixed Vegetables & Rice; Vegetables & Cheese; Peach, Pear & Apple).

Nursery Design Trends

Tiny Life

The current direction of nursery design is important when planning your nursery and Wendy Weir of Oki Doki Baby gives her advice for how parents can create a special environment for baby that functions well for baby and parents alike. Current Trends in Nursery Design: A lot more use of home décor colours instead of the typical nursery colours. Very rarely do people want to do the pastel blues, pinks and yellows. They’re leaning much more towards warmer colours: rich blues, pistachio greens, candy pinks, purple, brown and greys - “greyed-down” colours, toned down, richer. Crisp white is also a hot favourite due to its classic nature! Parents want the nursery to feel more like the rest of the house as opposed to the room that stands out. The warm rich colours are still very popular in the rest of the house – khakis and browns. Grey has been really big and present in a lot of home décor especially in the fabrics and furniture worlds. Trends are leaning a lot further away from anything that’s heavily character driven. While characters are cute and fun to decorate with, the whole character theme room is becoming a thing of the past. Parents are looking for more interesting artwork that maybe isn’t exactly perfectly matched, that looks more like it’s collected over years, not a “pop-up” nursery. Another aspect of the décor is the texture. Patterns are perfect in a minimalistic colour scheme whether it’s cute animals, stripes, polka dots or gingham. Make sure you add some personality and homeliness into the room with unique mementos, picture frames and sentimental ornaments. Young Life Beesting, the Huffin and the Lenni Ears At the Tree of Much Hearing and Little Listening, Beatrice Beetle suddenly dashed from the large ear to the little ear. Her big brown beetle wings were nearly twice as large as the little ear. “Come closer everyone,” she buzzzzzzeeed. “Very close, else you will not be able to listen. By the way – this little ear’s name is Lenni listening. The name of the large ear is Huffin hearing.”

“Ooooh Beesting I am scared,” whispered Stella, Beesting’s little flea friend. “Stop it Stella,” raufffffed Beesting. He had no option but to sit down once more to give his ear another good scratch with his hind paw. With all Stella’s nervous jumping around his left ear was now itching like never before and all the scratching made his ear feel hot. His ear was also turning red, just like the big red bump on his Beesting nose. “I can’t hear a thing,” said Connie. “Neither can I,” said Decky. Little Saffy also couldn’t hear anything. It was then that Beesting heard it. Ssssssssshhhhhhhssssshhhh…. the wind and the sound of all the many leaves. But then the loud moaning, groaning, creaky, cracking sound of the heavy branches as they slowly moved in the wind as if they were saying aaaauuuwwwwww. Just like someone would say when their back hurt a bit.

“’Tree talk’ everyone,” Beesting excitedly raaffed! “’Tree talk’ holds the secret to the Huffin and the Lenni ears,” explained the tree of Much Hearing and Little Listening. “Now I am even more confused,” said Connie. I guess we will just have to wait till next time for the tree to explain.

Young Life Affirming Your Child Affirming a child will build up their self-esteem and make them less vulnerable to the peer pressure they face daily. For instance, when offered sex, drugs or alcohol they are more likely to say “no” because there is nothing they need added to their life. A child with good self-esteem will feel content just as they are. “It’s very easy to take our children or even our spouses for granted and I well remember my wife asking me one day on my return from work whether I saw anything different in the house. Of course I looked around concerned, but could not see anything different. She then said sadly, that she was disappointed because she had prepared the home and children for my home-coming and she just wished I had noticed,” said Gavin. The opposite of affirmation is criticism. In some homes that is all we hear all day long. School marks are never good enough, the game was not played well enough, clothing is wrong, music is wrong, their friends are wrong. Of course there are times when guidance is needed and this will be appreciated by the child. But when there is constant criticism, the child will get to a point where they believe that they really are not good enough, so why not just be a loser and join those involved in high-risk behaviour.

Young Life Kidz Online Kidz Online is a daycare and pre-primary school that offers parents the online ability to share in their children’s daily education and care. Kidz Online recently received an ISO 9001 quality management certification from the SABS for the school.

Win free entry for 2 adults, 2 kids, 2 pony rides and 2 feeds! Visit www.mumsmail.com to enter.

Kidz Online offers a well-equipped and staffed school and, additionally, gives parents the ability to log on to a website through which they can watch their child at school. This first-of-its-kind website gives parents the ability to be more involved in their children’s education as well as the assurance that they can check up on their progress from anywhere and at any time. The website idea was formulated by principal Erthney Abrahams. “I started Kidz Online after discovering, through personal experience, that the only way to have true peace of mind when it comes to your child’s pre-primary education is to be like a fly on the wall – seeing everything,” explained Erthney. “Our cameras and extended recording capabilities allow parents to not only keep track of everything that happens at the school, they can also be sent video clips of important milestones such as those precious first steps. We adhere to our motto of ‘Mom away from Mom’ at all times, and at Kidz Online, children are not only educated, they are loved and nurtured in a caring, home-like environment.” Receiving the ISO 9001 certification was something Erthney wanted to achieve in order to make the standards of their new system official. But, as Kidz Online was the first pre-primary educare facility to attempt the accreditation, there were no set procedures to follow and the process was a lengthy one. Erthney has already registered the Kidz Online trademark and intends extending her concept nationally and globally through franchising. Contact: Erthney Abrahams, erthney_kidzonline@yahoo.com. Educated Life Hamptons Primary School – Educating Towards Excellence

HAMPTONS PRIMARY SCHOOL

Educating towards Excellence

January 2012 was the birth of this innovative and exciting new school. Hamptons Primary School inducted its first two Grade 1 classes this year and is very pleased with their progress. Educated Life The Importance of Teaching our Children Resilience Do you find, as a parent, that much of your time is spent worrying about your child’s wellbeing? Our natural instinct is to protect them from dealing with life’s hardships such as death, divorce, bullying, trauma, peer pressure – the list is endless. We tend to sweep anything that is emotionally charged or difficult under the carpet instead of facing the issues at hand. The question is: Does this approach teach our children the resilience they need to survive in today’s highly competitive world? Nelson Mandela advocated in his book, Long Walk to Freedom, that those who succeed in life are those who have acquired the skills to deal with adversity. Research substantiates this view. Think of a child learning to swim; there are times when, as a parent, you want to dive in and save them. We hate to see children struggle or be upset or uncomfortable. But when they finally learn to swim on their own, the look on their faces and the sense of accomplishment and confidence is simply priceless. We as parents need to learn when to protect and when to step back and facilitate resilience and confidence in our children. We need to give them a chance to deepen and strengthen their coping skills. It is in helping children deal with their difficulties that they begin to recognise their own strength and abilities. Chandre Ezra can impart to you and your child the skills needed to help weather those tough days and come out the other side smiling!

Treating ADD and ADHD the Natural Way

Montessori Pre-School

When we were young ADD and ADHD were not topics of discussion. But in today’s children it is a widely diagnosed condition. It makes you wonder if modern-day food processing and the depleted nutrient value in our foods could be a root cause of ADD and ADHD?

rs

Shining At Every Level

11 Ribston Place, Dawncliffe, Westville We offer: • Practical life, numeracy, literacy, sensorial, cutural, and art in our curriculum • Individual attention guaranteed • Age group between 2 years and 6 years.

Is there an alternative to prescribed drugs? According to ADHASA (Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Support Group of Southern Africa), in the past few years there have been changes in the approach to ADHD and people are beginning to realise the importance of the environment to these children. This includes the food they eat. Improved nutrition depends upon eating more fresh, natural foods and avoiding unnecessary additives like synthetic colourants and flavourants. Doing so can raise the overall levels of functioning.

A number of years ago Antoinette Zeelie’s health was negatively affected by a stressful work environment. She addressed these health challenges the natural way with nutritional supplementation and saw a marked improvement in her health and energy levels. She believes that these supplements may also help bring back balance to ADD and ADHD children, and improve their behaviour and concentration levels.

Party Life Party Cakes Bread Ahead, with its inviting “warm bread” aroma and delicious-looking displays, is not your average corner café. Apart from bread, the company also sells confectionary, pies, bunny chows and more. But it’s their eye-catching, totally scrumptious cakes that really take the, well, cake! When it comes to cakes they do “all and everything”. Whether it’s birthday cakes, wedding cakes or novelty cakes you need, Bread Ahead does it. And in just about any flavour, from chocolate vanilla to red velvet (beetroot juice and cream cheese icing), carrot to Bar One. They also do any size – from a standard nine inch to 6m2 (the biggest they’ve done to date) and shape (i.e. novelty cakes). What’s really great is that, as a customer, you can simply choose a cake from their display or, if you need something out of the norm, you can discuss your party cake requirements and have it made for you. Visit any Bread Ahead store (Cowey Road, Gateway, Pavilion, Galleria, Bluff, Davenport Centre, Pinetown, Briardene, Chatsworth and Bluff Towers) to choose or order your next party cake. For specially made cakes it is recommended that you visit Thersha at the flagship bakery in Cowey Road, Berea, and discuss your plans with him. For very involved cakes, such as wedding cakes, Bread Ahead will deliver and set up at your venue. Otherwise, you are free to collect the cake yourself. Tony Miller is proud to introduce “Putts Perfect”, the world’s first sealed air portable mini golf course. A mini golf course is an easy way to offer families fun for birthday parties, family gatherings and fun days and still stay within most budgets. Hire one hole, three holes or nine holes. With the innovation of the new sealed air frame mini golf course, all problems relating to renting a portable mini golf course are solved. These courses are versatile in shape and layout. Local Paradise

Cilla Rose has run her Umhlanga-based guest house, Anchor’s Rest, for 13 years. She works together with husband, Peter, and frontline staff member, Sandy. Having started off with just one room, the establishment now has four guest rooms, one of which is a two-room suite, and three of which are self-catering units. Cilla, who has a Human Resources background and excels in organisation, does most of the admin work required. This involves licencing (music, TVs, DSTV, business, catering and liquor) and ensuring the guest house adheres to the labour laws. “All these have to be renewed annually,” said Cilla, “and although they are a lot of work I agree with the whole process.” Cilla also oversees the cleaning and breakfast staff. Breakfast is a lavish affair, warranting a stay for this meal alone. On offer daily: home-made fruit salad, muffins, croissants, cereal, yoghurt, cheese, jams and preserves, waffles, pancakes, scones AND a full English Breakfast. How’s that for delicious! Anchor’s Rest is ideally situated for the leisure and business market – it is within walking distance of the beach and over 20 restaurants, and a short drive from the Umhlanga Ridge business district. Holidaymakers make up 60% of their business, while the business market accounts for the other 40%. Several overseas guests have been annual guests at this South African spot for many years. Said Cilla, “Lots of guests who come here tell us how lucky we are to live in this ‘paradise’. Umhlanga Rocks really is a lovely place to live and despite the problems in our country it’s a wonderful place with so many opportunities.”

Relaxed Life Segway Gliding Tours

Um

The Durban beachfront with its wide, beautifully paved walkway, is an idyllic place along which to run or cycle. But let’s face it, these perspiration-producing activities can detract from the beauty of the rolling ocean as you puff along brushing the beads of sweat from your eyes. Enter the Segway! The Segway is a two-wheeled, battery-operated “machine” that operates using gyroscope technology. Users simply step onto the axle between the two wheels, hold onto the upright bar and use their body weight to set the Segway in motion. My daughter, Roxanne, and I had the pleasure of doing a Segway Gliding Tour recently, at the Moses Mabhida Stadium. Etienne was our guide. After giving us helmets Etienne gave us a quick and easy lesson on how to operate the Segway and then led us off for a tour of the stadium and the beachfront. To turn right you lean right, to go forward you push the upright bar forward and to slow down you lean backwards. The top speed is 20km/h and by the end of our tour I found myself wishing I could go faster! But then I might have missed what Etienne had to say about our magnificent KZN stadium and the beautiful golden mile.
