Editor’s Life

My Aunt comes armed with a multitude of talents: she cooks a mean batch of beetroot, and she also has a Hitler-like approach to my kids’ rooms, which she attacks on an annual basis. She is a tidy-holic and loves to extract as much garbage from their rooms as possible. The last time she was here, we eradicated close to 8 black bags of junk. This time, only 4...perhaps the kids are getting craftier at hiding their rubbish away before she strikes?

PIETERMARITZBURG

GRADES 1 - 12

My Aunt came to stay for 10 days last month. She lives in a little “dorpie” called Theunissen – ever heard of it? Don’t worry, most people haven’t. Their town is so small that we once rode our horses into the corner cafe to buy a cooldrink, and the shopkeeper did not even bat an eyelid, as if it was “normal” to do that.

We also take great delight in showing off Durban and the Midlands each time she visits. A highlight was the weekend we spent at Saddle and Trout, and although the wind blew gales, the Midlands at this time of the year is truly stunning. We’re off to Emdoneni Lodge soon (near Hluhluwe), and cannot wait to interact with their wild cats again. What is YOUR favourite place to get away from it all? Where are you going to these July holidays? Let me know so we can share your ideas with our readers: editor@mumsmail.com.

KZN Museum KwaZulu-Natal Museum Situated in the heart of the city of Pietermaritzburg the KwaZulu-Natal Museum is one of the largest cultural and natural history museums in South Africa. The wide range of outstanding animal collections highlights the rich diversity of wildlife in southern Africa, including a collection of mammals, insects, marine molluscs, amphibians, and birds. The Marine Gallery is home to the rare and unusual Coelacanth – a large prehistoric fish that was thought to be extinct until it was discovered swimming the seas off the east coast in 1938. The Human Science Gallery deals with the intriguing history of human habitation in southern Africa. Beginning with a superb San exhibit, it then moves on to the Iron Age people who migrated to southern Africa from central Africa around 2000 years ago, the Great Zimbabwe Ruins and the Late Iron Age civilisation that inhabited them, and then to the early Portuguese explorers who were the first Europeans to travel to these shores. The Old Pietermaritzburg Gallery shows a fabulous reconstruction of a Pietermaritzburg street in the Victorian era. Including an apothecary (pharmacy/chemist), pawnbroker, dressmaker, blacksmith, jeweller, and a wheelwright shop, it is an attraction not to be missed. Recently the Museum installed an Internet café and learner resource library and boasts an impressive 16 computers and even a film room. So whether you explore a recreation of a Drakensberg cave or stroll through a night time scene in the Victorian gallery or walk on the wooden deck of a wrecked trading vessel in the Towns and Trade Exhibition, there is clearly a lot to do and see at this impressive Museum. Healthy Life/Beautiful Life Get Rid of Those Winter Bulges VASER Lipo by Contour Aesthetics is a revolutionary, instant fat removal, once-off procedure. Whether you’d like to lose bulges or large areas of fat, VASER Lipo gives you the results you want.Using a technique called LipoSelection®, VASER Lipo targets specific areas of the body. Ultrasonic waves break up and separate fat cells for removal via gentle suction, while leaving vital tissues unharmed. This results in less bleeding and bruising than traditional liposuction. VASER Lipo is so precise and gentle that patients notice instant fat loss with little down time. VASER Lipo enables the VASER certified practitioner to give you precise, smooth and predictable results, whereas traditional liposuction can result in lumpy or uneven areas. With VASER Lipo, you can expect: • Realistic curves and definition, even for large problem areas. • Easy removal of large quantities of fat. • Precise sculpting of delicate areas of the body like arms and thighs. • Minimally invasive procedures performed in a comfortable, clinical setting. • Fast recovery times. • Smooth, tight results. Healthy Life/Beautiful Life Hellooow Handmade For as long as she can remember, Merewyn de Heer of Hellooow Handmade has designed and created things. “I spent hours on the floor of my mom’s sewing room playing with ribbons and buttons. My mom says that, from as young as two, I would pin fabric together to make clothes for my dolls,’’ says Merewyn. After matriculating Merewyn studied and then worked in the field of Graphic Design. After years in this area she began to miss using her hands and creating product. After a pottery course she started creating ceramic crosses on leather and velvet ribbon. Orders followed and then Merewyn branched out into jewellery and launched her Hellooow Handmade jewellery range at the 2010 Design Indaba. Beaded chandeliers were added to the range and, not only have these been Merewyn’s biggest sellers, but their creation has enabled Merewyn to employ women infected and affected by HIV and Aids.

Readers’ Life Star Letter Good day. I am writing from our small village in Mozambique. We work among the rural people of Mozambique implementing simple solutions to big problems. I contacted Mum’s Mail to advise on what we are doing in Mozambique. The next thing I was getting massive amounts of visitors to our website.
