It takes about six months to put together one morning of fun, and every year as the high tea looms nearer, the boxes of goodie bag samples, hampers and vouchers crowd us out of the office and house. But what never ceases to amaze me is the selfless generosity of each and every sponsor we approach. At the last count, we had more than 200 sponsors this year, which is incredible.

For people with special needs, swimming can increase their independence, which in turn can increase self-confidence and lead to a better quality of life. Swimming for special needs children can be very rewarding and great results can be achieved. However, special consideration needs to be taken when teaching a child with a special need e.g. many autistic children cannot maintain eye contact with a person and listen to them at the same time. This may be seen as them not engaging in the activity when in actual fact they are, but need more time and patience to understand and carry out the instruction. The teacher should keep the lessons consistent, like always wearing the same swimming costume and always placing the boards, noodles etc. in the same place.

Visually impaired children need to experience every aspect of the water, the environment and the lesson as they cannot just be shown, but rather need to feel, touch and understand everything on a physical level. A cerebral palsy child, depending on the level of impairment, may have very stiff uncontrolled limbs and the water is a wonderful way for them to be able to exercise and have fun in a safe and weightless environment. Swimming lessons can serve as a fun outing for carers and children to enjoy each other’s company whilst learning a life skill. For any carers interested in the swimming programme, an individual consultation will take place between the swimming teacher and the carer to ensure that each individual child’s needs are fully understood. The Allan Wilson Shellhole in Alan Paton Road, Pietermaritzburg, has opened a new theatre on its premises in partnership with Durban’s Rhumbelow Theatre. The hall at the shellhole has been turned into a supper-theatre venue for the hosting of cabarets and music revues. Shows will be hosted here twice a month. This new partnership will not only provide residents with great theatre, but will also help raise the profile of the Memorable Order of Tin Hats (Moth) organisation and help it raise money for charity. During shows, the shellhole’s well-appointed and cosy pub will be open. Funds raised from the cash bar will be used to help Shellhole members do community work in the city. Roland Stansell has had the same kind of partnership with the Rhumbelow Shellhole in Umbilo since July 2001 and was involved in the setup of this Pietermaritzburg-based one. Eight to 10 people can be seated around tables at the venue and patrons are encouraged to take picnic baskets but no drinks. The venue opens 90 minutes before the show for dinner. Booking is essential and tickets are R100 through Computicket (0861 915 8000). “Elvis Through the Ages” will be performed at the Shellhole on 29 September at 2pm and 6.30pm. Come and join the performers as they take you on an unforgettable journey through the ages of Elvis’ musical career. This 90-minute production features Doug Weich as Elvis and is suitable for all ages.
