Editor’s Life This month is an extremely exciting one for Mum’s Mail! We are hosting our 9th annual Durban High Tea in association with The Sunflower Fund on Friday 5 September, for 420 gorgeous Green Goddesses. Our guests are in for a huge spoiling as always, with bulging goodie bags, surprise envelopes, raffle hampers, sparkling wine, endless cappuccinos, sweet and savoury treats, great speakers, entertainment and amazing retail therapy. We are also proud to announce the launch of our very own Mum’s Mail app, which is going to revolutionise the way you interact with us. It is a free download from your app store, and is available on Android and Apple devices. You can also scan the QR code on the Mum’s Mail advert on page 95 and it will take you straight to the app. So why would you need to download an app when you are already a fan on our Facebook page, visit our website regularly and read our printed mag monthly? Well besides “app” being the new buzz word (and we do like to be in fash), using our app will make reading our magazine online so easy, for those times when you can’t get your hands on the printed version – it’s literally at your fingertips, wherever you are. You can also enter our competitions via the app, search the directory of advertisers and services, check out what’s happening in your area, access our Facebook and Twitter pages, read all the latest news we’ve uploaded via our e-newsletters, check out photos from our gallery, post notices for free on the notice board and sign up for the newsletter. But best of all, you can take advantage of special offers via the “coupons” button that may not necessarily be available in the magazine. What are you waiting for? Download the app today. Do send us your feedback and let us know what you like/dislike about the app.

Readers’ Life

Readers’ Life Twitter link and App: I LOVE your Twitter link and App! I love the fact that Mum’s Mail is always ahead of its game! Sabrina Maingard. Thank you: I would like to congratulate you all on producing such an incredible and informative magazine. My mum has got to be one of your biggest fans, because it is thanks to the newsletters that we discovered our new favourite family restaurant and we have discovered some of the many highlights of Durban. Our favourite is Olive & Oil. We first visited the Ballito branch, but through your magazine we discovered the one in Umhlanga. My family is from Verulam, so besides the convenience it is always great value for money for our family of six. We actually ‘create’ special occasions just to go and celebrate there and we always have a pleasant experience. Our next adventure is going to be the Eat Greek Buffet, as it is highly recommended by you. My mum faithfully makes me enter your monthly competitions. Thanks again for the fantastic job that you guys are doing. God bless. Sarika Govender.

A Vegetarian’s Glow: Is There a Nutritional Reason for Their Radiance? The secrets behind a perfect complexion are multifaceted, but the foods we choose are certainly reflected by the condition of our skin. Registered Dietician, Caryn Davies says; “The main nutritional roleplayers for promotion of a firm, smooth and more youthful looking skin include the antioxidant vitamins, A, C and E, as well as omega 3 essential fatty acids.” Some of the best dietary sources of vitamin A include sweet potato, carrots, cabbage, kale, pumpkin, spinach, and apricots. Vitamin A has been associated with skin healing and is commonly used in antiwrinkle creams. Vitamin C also promotes skin renewal, prevents bruising and has a functional role in strengthening capillaries and collagen formation. Vitamin C is found in fruit and vegetables, especially citrus fruits, tomatoes, asparagus, red peppers, broccoli, guavas, and strawberries. Vitamin E protects cell membranes and exerts a powerful anti-oxidant effect, neutralising cell-damaging free radicals. The highest vitamin E concentrations in food can be found in soya beans, wheat-germ, hazelnuts, almonds, pistachios, peanuts and sunflower seeds. “Fruit and vegetable intake as well as variety thereof tend to be higher in vegans,” said Davies. “Similarly, the vegetarian lifestyle places a greater focus on seeds and nuts as a source of protein, which certainly offers added anti-oxidant value.” Although more extensive research is needed to understand the intricate relationship between nutrition and skin health, the groundwork repeatedly promotes the vegan-friendly food groups fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds.

Learning by Building Ever wondered why small children spend a long time building towers only to knock them down again? The fun is not just wrecking the tower. It’s the fun of building, undoing and rebuilding over and over again that keeps the children going. Building and stacking is a lot more than a game. It’s a way of learning how to control arms and hands, while at the same time, gaining confidence that one can start again, get better and the best part: build variations along the way.

Scream To Activate Your Alarm 3 Sound Level Detection Settings Armed 24/7 Compatible With Existing Systems

When you are a small child, the simple game of stacking bricks demands quite a lot. You can tell just by looking: the concentrated look when your child puts one brick onto another. The silent amazement when his new tower actually stands; “I did it!” Children love to build and stack, because it helps them develop hand-eye co-ordination and motor skills – pretty important things, when the next thing in line is learning to eat by yourself or putting on your shoes. Fine motor skills and learning-by-doing go together. As your child learns to grab and pinch, he/she also gets a better grasp, or handle, on the world, as well as his/her ability to act in the world, and make a difference. LEGO DUPLO is ideal for small hands, helping children to develop though play and encouraging social development. Play and Build Toys is a dedicated LEGO store recently opened in La Lucia Mall. LEGO is one of the few ageless toys that allow learning and development across various age groups. Learning through Play! The Parents’ Guide to Subject Choice

Core Mathematics is the key to many highprofile and lucrative careers, don’t let your children settle for less. Trying to get your children through the maze (and sometimes chaos) of young adulthood to the point where they can stand on their own two feet is a full-time challenge. Of primary importance for the future wellbeing of your children is their education, in particular their Mathematics education. Mathematics lies at the core of numerous qualifications that prepare students for careers in fields like medicine, accounting, engineering and science, to name a few. University acceptance into BComm Accounting and similar qualifications requires learners to achieve a minimum 50% pass on higher grade Core Mathematics. However, in recent years, the subject of Mathematics Literacy has been introduced as an alternative for those students who find Core Mathematics to be more of a challenge. While switching to Mathematics Literacy might have beneficial short-term

effects in terms of gaining matriculation or improving a school’s overall pass rate, the harsh reality is that not continuing with Core Mathematics results in learners suffering from a significant handicap when it comes to further studies and career options. Most children are capable of gaining a good matric pass in Core Mathematics and they should be encouraged to fulfil their potential. One organisation that has been working actively against this ‘brain drain’ is The South African Institute for Chartered Accountants (SAICA). SAICA has implemented several programmes such as its Choose Maths and Crunch the Numbers initiatives, provincial Mathematics Camps, Maths Olympiad and Educator Workshops that are specifically designed to address these problems.

What’s All the Fuss About My Child Needing Speech Therapy?

HOLY FAMILY COLLEGE

A child develops speech and language in order to communicate and express their wants and needs. Language is divided into two main divisions: Receptive Language, which is understanding, and Expressive Language, which is speaking and writing ability.

Situated in the beautiful suburb of Glenmore is a Catholic school with roots that reach back 139 years. A school with passionate teachers dedicated to building, developing and growing confident young leaders from Grade 000 to Matric.

Speech is a system of sounds or ‘phones’ which you develop. These sounds all develop at different stages and ages. With this complicated developmental system, it is often a very difficult thing to deal with as a parent if your child is delayed in their speech and language development. As I am an English speaking therapist, most of the children I see are first language English speakers, so on top of all this complicated speech and language development that children have to go through, they also have to go through it in English, which is a difficult language in itself. Many parents say to me that when they were young it was uncommon to go to a speech therapist, so what has changed? Research over the years has identified that early intervention is so important. This is because there is so much demand placed on the children once they get to Grade R/Grade 1, that often having speech and language difficulties can affect their reading, writing and spelling as they begin their formal schooling. Small difficulties can increase, which can affect confidence, so bridging that gap at a young age is so important.

Exciting new developments in our Primary School Section

The Importance of Balance Your toddler will make huge strides physically, intellectually, and emotionally as they develop and reach their milestones. We sat down with Barbara Eaton, Academic Coordinator for Pre-Primary Schools at ADvTECH where she gave us some insight into one of the developmental milestones; balance. Balance is the ability to maintain the body’s centre of mass over its base of support. A properly functioning balance system allows humans to see clearly while moving, identify location with respect to gravity, determine direction and speed of movement, and make automatic postural adjustments to maintain stability in various conditions and activities. Balance begins in infancy as babies begin to hold their heads up and raise themselves up on their arms. It develops steadily with opportunities to run, jump, climb, balance and play. Development of balance stabilises at approximately 10 to 11 years. There are balance milestones to achieve by certain ages, for instance, a child should be able to balance on one leg for more than 12 seconds by the age of 5.5 years. At pre-school girls appear to have slightly better balance than boys.

Balance is basic to physical fitness, as it is the ability to maintain and control body position while stationary or moving. Good balance and core muscle tone enable a child to sit at a desk for academic tasks and to persevere for reasonable periods of time. This is called static balance. Dynamic balance is the ability to maintain postural control during movement, so is important to all sport and dance. To understand balance, it’s important to understand how balance works. Beware Of Vehicle Jamming The incidence of car jamming has seen a dramatic increase over the past 18 months, and you are urged to be vigilant to avoid becoming a victim. Jamming involves the blocking of car remotes using a household remote, effectively preventing the locking action of the car from being activated. Criminals then have easy access to the vehicle and your valuables without any forced entry.

We specialise in short-term insurance for both your Domestic anD commercial neeDs

Contact Cheryl King 031 314 3415 or 082 894 0756 (Authorised Financial Service Provider FSP3274)

Schools are being targeted as these are particularly easy pickings for criminals as many parents leave valuables such as handbags, wallets and laptops in their cars while they walk their children into school. Shopping malls are also targeted. How does this affect your insurance? Most insurance policies require that theft from a vehicle must be accompanied by theft/ violent entry, and also items must be kept in a locked boot. If there is no sign of forcible entry the claim will be rejected, or at least be subject to a hefty excess.

What’s the best solution? • Make sure your car is locked before you walk away. Manually check the doors and boot. • Be aware of your surroundings and look out for suspicious looking people. • NEVER leave your valuables in your car. Tip of the Month Make sure your valuables are locked away in the boot of your car. Secondly, always double check that the doors and boot are locked before you walk away. Bring out the Bling This Casual Day

President Alice Leah 031 - 573 1731 (ext 5)

For the price of less than a loaf of bread or the small change in your pocket, you can make a huge difference. By donating R10 for a sticker, you are making your contribution to improving the lives of people with disabilities. Casual Day celebrates its 20th birthday this year. The theme for 2014 is ‘Bring out the Bling’ and the colour for the year is dazzle blue. Put on your dancing shoes and dress up, not down, for this year’s Casual Day on Friday 5 September. “The theme is appropriately celebratory,” said project leader, Celeste Vinassa. “We have been dressing casually for the past two decades, but this year is a special occasion. So our message to you is to rustle up a little razzle dazzle, and dress up in the official colour of the year, dazzle blue. Casual Day is all about fantasy and dressing up in things you can find around the house. Be creative with glitter, fabric, shiny paper or just wear your sticker and a posh casual attitude!”

Egg Free Mayonnaise Martin Greeff developed Martinnaise when his wife developed an allergy to soya. They discovered that soya is in just about everything, including their family’s favourite mayonnaise at the time. Martin decided to test his hand at making his own mayonnaise, but months of disastrous attempts and inedible results proved that this was no easy task. However with much persistence he finally had a result his family loved. He was finally persuaded by his growing following to make it available commercially. “I didn’t want to make just another mayonnaise with a minor variation, it had to be radically different and I wanted everyone to enjoy it whether you just loved good tasting mayonnaise or whether you had special dietary needs,” said Martin. “We took everything we have learnt and developed a completely fresh approach to mayonnaise, resulting in a product that just about anyone can eat, especially those who want to eat healthily as well as those with allergies to gluten, eggs, diary, preservatives, colourants and more. Even vegans and vegetarians can enjoy our range of mayonnaise.” Martinnaise has currently got the largest available range of flavours, providing discerning consumers with variety and choice. It is also much more versatile than ordinary mayonnaise, as it can also be used to prepare hot meals, for example, the creamy Gourmet Martinnaise can be used instead of dairy cream or yoghurt when cooking, giving you all the taste without the excesses. Martinnaise is available at The Food Market and selected stores. Contact: 031 – 700 9193, www.martinnaise.co.za, www.thefoodmarket.co.za. What is in the Food you are Buying?

James’ Roses

Global consumer confidence in the food industry is at an all-time low. It is not enough for brands to say “trust me” or to have good legislation, there has to be more assurance to the consumer that food brands are being honest when it comes to what they put on their labels. While some food manufacturers take quality seriously and make products up to legislative standards and even go so far as testing their products against the label, how will you as a consumer know this unless they tell you? And will you believe them anyway? Incorrect labelling is not something that consumers will know about unless they start requesting that brands show them information which verifies that what is printed on the label is actually what is inside the food. Understanding of food labels Our research revealed that consumers don’t understand the information on labels. While they are seeking out calorie, fat counts, salt or sugar contents they do not have an understanding of how to interpret these levels on the label. Just because a label does not list an ingredient it does not mean it isn’t present in another form. For example, a label on the front may say the product has no added MSG, but all that means, is that none has been added, while some may have been in the raw ingredients to start with.

What Is ADHD or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder? Just because someone cannot concentrate and sit still does not mean they have ADHD. To be ADHD, it must start before the age of 12, last longer than six months, and cause a real handicap both at home, school or work. Drugs are not necessarily the first line of treatment. The term ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) is no longer in use. ADHD is a neurological disorder involving biologically active substances in the “self-control” centre of the brain, responsible for organisation, thinking ahead and carrying out the sequences to complete a task. It is often mistaken for laziness or a lack of motivation and energy.

Skin Cancer Prevention Tips National Skin Cancer Screening Day falls on 1 September and with that in mind, here are some tips to help you prevent skin cancer. Research also shows that not only does sun protection reduce one’s risk of developing skin cancer; sun protection may also decrease the likelihood of recurrence. Even if you have spent a lot of time in the sun or developed skin cancer, it’s never too late to begin protecting your skin. Dr Jhetam recommends that everyone protect their skin by following these sun protection practices: 1. Avoid deliberate tanning. Lying in the sun may feel good, but the end result is premature ageing as well as a 1 in 5 chance of developing skin cancer. Tanning beds and sunlamps are just as dangerous because they, too, emit enough UV radiation to cause premature ageing and skin cancer.

2. Generously apply sunscreen to all exposed skin every day. The sunscreen should have a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of at least 30 and be broad-spectrum (provides protection from ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) rays). 3. Wear protective clothing, such as a longsleeved shirt, pants, a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses, where possible. 4. Stay in the shade when possible when the sun’s rays are strongest, from 10am to 4pm. 5. Use extra caution near water, snow and sand as they reflect the damaging rays of the sun. This can increase your risk chance of sunburn. 6. Check your birthday suit on your birthday. If you notice anything changing, growing, or bleeding on your skin, see a dermatologist. Skin cancer is very treatable when caught early. Contact: Dr Imraan Jhetam, Specialist Dermatologist, 031 – 208 3370, info@skindoctor.co.za, www.skinmedics.co.za. SPRING SPECIAL

Melaskin from Complete Organics Melaskin is a unique product, in that it combines the powerful remedial combination of the African Potato, Kigelia and Sutherlandia, which are blended as an organic skin cream and carefully formulated to assist in the treatment of sun-damaged skin, Solar Keratosis and other skin afflictions. Solar Keratosis is a small, thickened, scaly growth (or lump) on the skin which is caused by over-exposure to the sun over many years. Unless treated, Solar Keratosis growths run the risk of eventually developing into Melanomas. Melaskin combines Kigelia extract with Hypoxis extract (African Potato) and Sutherlandia (Cancer bush) which balances the body’s immune response, and it is the combined synergy of these three components that enables Melaskin to be such an effective skin treatment.

• Sun damaged skin • Solar Keratosis • Molluscum Contagiosum • Athlete’s foot • Fungus under the nails • Fever blisters • Ringworm • Sunburn • Eczema (certain types) • Rashes/chafing • Insect bites • Minor burns • Kaposis Sarcomas. Molluscum Contagiosum is a highly contagious viral infection. The virus propagates the appearance of small white or pink protruding bumps or growths that, although painless, may create an itchy, red, swollen, or irritable skin condition. Melaskin has proved highly successful in treating it. The most common way of treating this condition in the past has been to burn each growth with liquid nitrogen. Melaskin is safe for children and is an excellent day/night cream due to its outstanding hydrating properties.

Many users have reported that it has a very positive effect on various viral and fungal problems such as:

National Oral Health Month

What is Good Oral Hygiene?

Dr Paul Darby-Wade Dentist

Oral Health Month, observed in September, aims to create awareness in communities of the importance of maintaining a clean and healthy mouth and to promote good oral health practices. Oral diseases remain a major public health problem in South Africa because of their high prevalence, severity, and impact on the individual quality of life.

BChD (Stell.), MFGDP, Dip. in Implant Dentistry RCS (UK)

SPECIAL SERVICES: • Children • Bleaching • Nervous Patients • Implants • Cosmetic Treatment • Same Day Crowns 111 Kensington/Adelaide Tambo Drive, Durban North Tel: 031 - 564 2491 www.gooddentist.co.za

Good oral hygiene results in a mouth that looks and smells healthy. This means: • Your teeth are clean and free of debris. • Gums are pink and do not hurt or bleed when you brush or floss. • Bad breath is not a constant problem.

Tips to look after your teeth Brush at least twice a day.

Maintaining good oral hygiene is one of the most important things you can do for your teeth and gums. Healthy teeth not only enable you to look and feel good, they make it possible to eat and speak properly. Good oral health is important to your overall well-being. Daily preventive care, including proper brushing and flossing, will help stop problems before they develop and are much less painful, expensive, and worrisome than treating conditions that have been allowed to progress.

Use fluoridated toothpaste. Brush thoroughly. Floss your teeth daily. Limit acidic drinks like soft drinks, cordials and fruit juices. Limit sugary foods. Protect your teeth from injury.

In between regular visits to the dentist, there are simple steps you can take to greatly decrease the risk of developing tooth decay, gum disease and other dental problems. These include: • Brushing thoroughly twice a day and flossing daily. • Eating a balanced diet and limiting snacks between meals. • Using dental products that contain fluoride, including toothpaste. • Rinsing with a fluoride mouth rinse if your dentist tells you to. • Making sure that children under 12 drink fluoridated water or take a fluoride supplement if they live in a non-fluoridated area.

Try to save a knocked out tooth. Avoid using your teeth for anything other than chewing food. Visit your dentist for regular check-ups.

Tips for Better Listening Children can suffer from temporary and permanent changes in hearing. Regular hearing assessments will keep you, the parent, informed. Temporary changes in hearing can result from middle ear infections or debris in the ear canal, which can be solved through medical intervention. Permanent hearing loss, even mild, needs to be addressed through the use of hearing instruments. However, both groups of children do not develop appropriate listening behaviour.

when they are being spoken to. Show interest and maintain eye contact when communicating with your child.

• What did you hear? – It is often easier to say “huh” or “what” when you are unsure of what you have heard rather than try and work it out. Committed to Helping People Hillcrest resident, Debbie Cameron, made a career out of physiotherapy because of her desire to help people through the difficulties that accidents and pathologies bring. “When I set up my practice ten years ago my focus was, and still is, to aim for full recovery no matter how severe the accident, how chronic the pathology or how complicated the condition,” explained Debbie. The practice treatment time is longer than the standard, in order to include both the motor control retraining of the affected joint and to provide pain relief using physiotherapy techniques. The practice has an extra gym area equipped with Pilates and sports equipment for retraining purposes. Debbie believes that it is this comprehensive and individualised approach which has Kate drawn, and continues to draw, people to the practice. Lawrie BodytaLK

Vision training helps people to read faster and with better comprehension. It has been estimated that the average person reads from 250 to 300 words a minute and comprehends about 50% to 70% of what he reads. Following optometric training, it isn’t at all uncommon to double this reading speed to 500, 600 or more words a minute with comprehension as high as 90%. Think what this means to students acquiring an education, or the man or woman in business.

80% of what we do and what we learn is attributable to the visual sense. It has been estimated that 75% to 90% of all classroom learning comes to the student via visual pathways. If there is any interference with these pathways, the student will probably experience difficulty with learning and athletic tasks. Today, with the overwhelming load of reading that is demanded in order to be educated, the eyes have to shoulder a disproportionate burden. Two-thirds of the energy used up in a day’s work is used up visually. In many instances the eyes are ill-prepared for the excessive demands of protracted close work and as a result visual errors and visual stress develop, with a subconscious avoidance response which might manifest as attention deficit disorder (ADD) or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

Beautiful Life

Cellulite and What To Do About It Cellulite is a common problem experienced by many women and even some men. It is the excessive dimpling or lumpiness of the skin noticed typically on the buttocks, hips and thighs, and is a result of fat being trapped within fibrous bands of connective tissue underneath the skin. Although more noticeable in larger women, thinner women can also suffer with this problem which is usually hereditary. It can also be caused by a poor diet (high salt and/ or fat), excessive weight gain, slowed metabolism, circulation problems, poor physical activity, smoking, hormonal changes, dehydration and worsens with age. So what can be done to improve it? Unfortunately cellulite cannot be completely eradicated. It can however be improved simply by losing excess weight, exercising with a combination of cardio and strength training (to improve muscle mass and decrease fat percentage) and by adopting a healthy diet with increased water and fresh fruit and veggies. Toning or stretching exercises done on vibration plate machines or with a foam roller can help to improve circulation remarkably with improvement of cellulite. Scrubs and creams have little to no success in improving cellulite. They assist in overall improvement in skin softness but not with reduction of the dimpling. Treatments such as lymphatic massages, radiofrequency and pulsed light/lasers require numerous sessions and repeat treatments but can offer noticeable improvements. Mesotherapy, comprising of injections of phosphatidylcholine, L-Carnitine or silica (to breakdown the fat) together with NCTF (a combination of hyaluronic acid with vitamins, amino acids and essential enzymes to improve the appearance of the overlying skin) can also assist with cellulite. Have you ever SEad_29x45_190814.indd 2 19/08/2014 16:56 heard of skin-needling, micro-needling, derma-rolling or Collagen Induction Therapy? All these phrases refer to the same procedure which boosts your body’s own collagen production and helps reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, enlarged pores, stretch marks, skin laxity, scarring and it also enhances overall skin rejuvenation. This treatment safely stimulates the production of collagen and is performed by an advanced skin care therapist or a medical practitioner. September Spring Clean Your face is exposed to the elements – dust, pollutants and makeup build up. All the while you are perspiring and secreting oil from within the skin. These secretions, along with the grooves and pores on the skin surface, trap dirt and hold them. Impurities can be oil-based substances such as excess sebum and some makeup, or water-based substances including dead skin cells, dust and perspiration. A thorough cleansing program should consider both types of impurities. Esse encourages a double cleanse routine, once a day (preferably in the evenings): Cleanse One: Esse’s Cream Cleanser binds with oil based impurities, allowing them to be rinsed away. Cleanse Two: Esse’s Gel Cleanser deep cleanses, allowing remaining water based impurities to be flushed out. You’ll be surprised how much the simple act of double cleansing can help improve your complexion! Esse Cream Cleanser is suitable for all skin types and is particularly comforting for dry, sensitive and mature skin types. For makeup users, Esse’s Eye Make-up Remover effortlessly removes all makeup without the need to rub and cause damage. Esse Gel Cleanser is a foaming, tingling wash that deep cleanses without drying. Peppermint and spearmint oils refresh and improve micro-circulation to aid in the elimination of toxins. As with all Esse products, the cleansers are pH balanced, so your skin’s barrier function remains uncompromised. Sensory Integration Difficulties

SPEECH & DRAMA

The number of children presenting with Sensory Integration Difficulties is increasing significantly. It is important that these difficulties are identified early and dealt with timeously, as they have a large impact on a child’s functioning in the classroom, at home and in social settings. Common signs to look out for that would indicate there may be Sensory Integration Difficulties: • Sensitivity to touch – avoiding any of the following or extreme reactions to them: certain textures of clothes, certain textures of food, hair-cuts and/or brushing, nailcutting, having their hands messy. • Sensitivity to noise: avoiding loud noises and covering their ears e.g. noises like alarms, hair-dryers, hand-dryers, vacuum cleaners, high-pitched screaming or shouting. • Sensitivity to certain food flavours/ smells: they will only eat foods that are very bland in flavour, such as fish fingers, chips, pasta without sauce, dry toast etc. • Sensitivity to movement: they become car sick easily, can’t tolerate backwards movement or being upside down, have a fear of their feet leaving the ground. • Sensitivity to visual stimuli: avoidance of the following: eye-contact, watching a moving object, e.g. a ball, bright lights or flickering lights. • Seeking out of sensations: e.g. swinging/ rocking/hopping in excess of what would be considered normal, teeth grinding, chewing on objects. • Difficulties with self-regulation: seen in challenges with sleep, coping with changes in routine, coping with new, unfamiliar environments or unexpected events. • Difficulties with praxis (motor planning): difficulty learning new skills, poor ability to imitate others, poor problem solving skills.

Young Life

From Street Kid to Corporate Kid The young girl slumps against a rubbish heap, the place she lives with her siblings and calls home. The streets are her school and her subjects are how to be street smart and survive. The young man, excluded from school for anger issues, has a place to call home. His education is about a degree and a future in the corporate world. Although a decade apart in age, both have something in common, that draws them together and onto the same page. Each attended a Kids’ Life Coaching programme during their times of greatest challenge. Traditionally, life coaching has been limited to adults, but life coaching for children has become increasingly popular. The greatness of this approach is that there is no stigma attached and the coaching is preventative in nature, rather than reactive after things have gone wrong. The Kids’ Life Studio® Founder, Zelna Lauwrens, who has trained and certified Kids’ Life Coaches throughout Africa and is now doing so in the United Kingdom, said: “The good news is that from street child to corporate child, the potential is there for success, all it takes is one seed to be planted and to teach children how to make it grow with courage, determination and belief in themselves.” Join Zelna Lauwrens for her Free Kids’ Life Coach Introductory Training on Saturday, 4 October. This training is aimed at anybody who is passionate about the well-being of children. After the training, you will receive a certificate of participation endorsed by the International Coach and Trainer Association. Super Helpful Heroes

Imagine if you could transform your child into a super helpful hero! I recently discovered the means to this end; fantasy dress-up and role play. A simple cape and a mask are all you need to transform your youngster into a super helpful hero. Play along with the idea of super hero tasks that get done in super quick time. When you child is wearing his or her (yes there is room for super heroines too) super cape, then all sorts of tasks can be performed with enthusiasm.

help spray the veggies with their super hero spray guns! You can add to your super hero wardrobe by making a mask from a paper plate cut in half. Cut a ‘v’ shape out of the round part as a space for the nose and oval shapes for the eyes. Then punch two holes to thread elastic in at the top sides. Never underestimate the power of role play in your child’s life.

My grandsons love the super hero capes I made for them. When they wear their capes, the enthusiasm for doing some extra work in the garden can be seen. They love to run around in their gumboots and

Breastfeeding: Don’t Give Up!

“The gentle approach to baby swimming“ “Opening the door of water fun and swimming excellence to everyone“

World Breastfeeding Week was in August, and with that in mind I would like to encourage mothers who are battling with breastfeeding – don’t give up! For me, breastfeeding was hard. It didn’t come naturally, it was painful and frustrating. I battled for a month with excruciating pain. My nipples were so deeply cracked that I thought they were going to fall off – really! They didn’t though! I ended up on antibiotics because the cracks got infected. Eventually the infection cleared but the cracks weren’t healing. I ended up having laser treatment, and that’s what made the difference. After four days of treatment, I could finally see the skin healing and breastfeeding became bearable. It just got better from then on.

• Baby Classes • Beginner Classes • Adult Classes • Stroke Technique GALA PREPARATIONS FOR 2013 • Stroke Correction

The reason why my nipples got so bad was that my son wasn’t latching properly, and I didn’t realise until it was too late. I used to cry through every feed, until, out of desperation, my husband did some internet research, and by reading articles and looking at diagrams, we figured out where we were going wrong and what to do. My advice to expectant mothers is to educate yourself as much as you can about breastfeeding BEFORE you give birth. I didn’t do that, because I thought it would just come naturally. Also, there are people out there who can help. Don’t suffer in silence. Ours is a great success story, and I’m so glad that I persevered. Eight months later I am still breastfeeding and my son is thriving! When you and your newborn finally get it right, it is the most special thing in the world.

The Importance of Analogue Time

Posh Spring Picnic

TAilorEd PACkAgES • Adult Parties/ Corporate Events • Balloon Artistry • Nail Painting • Airbrush Tattoos

Happy Spring Mum’s Mail readers! Celebrate outdoors with a fabulous picnic in the park. Posh Party has some gorgeous ideas to help you plan the perfect Spring Picnic for any age group!

Face Painting

• Skin care and hygiene is top priority • Paints safe to use • EU-compliant products • Waterbased/easy to remove • Qualatex balloons (biodegradable) for balloon shaping • Parties also available during school hours

If you have a grand, large luscious garden at home, why not keep it simple and host your picnic in the comfort of your own garden? Alternatively, select a park that will be suitable to host your picnic in a more public area. Great options around Durban include Botanical Gardens, Jameson Park, Durban North Japanese Gardens and Mitchell Park. Pack a basket full of yummy food and drink items. You can either pack a larger basket to serve 2 to 4 people, or pack smaller baskets as lunch packs. If it is a birthday party, add a personalised tag or sticker to the lunch basket for added flair. Keeping in true picnic style, grab some blankets and cushions from home to set up a comfortable seating area for your guests. Set up a table with ice-cold refreshments and desserts for guests to help themselves. Always have some POSH decorative accessories on hand. Keep it simple with some flowers, fabric bunting and balloons if it is a birthday celebration. Happy POSH picnicking! For more information on a Posh Picnic, contact Tarryn Livsey at tarryn@poshparty.co.za or 078 200 8578. Visit their website on www.poshparty.co.za.

A Delightful Dinosaur Party It seems like just yesterday Cooper was born and I was holding a tiny new born in my arms. It’s hard to believe we have just celebrated his 4th birthday. We took the brave step of having the celebration at home and I am so glad we did. With all the right systems in place, it was a stressfree and happy experience. A scrumptious spread of eats for parents and kids, meant I am still receiving texts from parents raving about the food. Bella & Boo had their mobile frozen yogurt van parked at the entrance to hand out cups of delight, a dinosaur jumping castle, face painting and the highlight of the party was a puppet show by mother and daughter team, Heather and Jane Tomlinson from Puppet World.

and it shows. I was blown away by the standard of the show and the magnificent puppets. From flying dinosaurs to ‘falling rocks’ and fancy dinosaur head gear, the kids and parents lapped up every second. Everyone got to take home a Melissa & Doug Water Wow Paint Book – a reusable paint with water, perfect for car journeys and playtime with no mess. Mike and I felt like we had run a marathon come 9pm, but what a sense of fulfilment and delight!

For more information or to book contact 031 – 709 2679, www.opendoor.org.za. ● Without the contributions of Durban Association for the Aged (DAFTA), many of Durban’s elderly would find themselves abandoned, lonely, in need, destitute, looking after orphaned grandchildren or sick. DAFTA improves the lives of elderly people in Durban. Regular contributions are of enormous value to them. To donate food, money or services, contact 031 – 266 4813 or fundraising@saol.com. ● Child Welfare Durban and District provides child protection services to children between 0 and 18 years of age. To make a donation or volunteer, visit www.cwdd.org.za or contact 031 – 312 9313, info@cwdd.org.za. ● The Centre for Rehabilitation of Wildlife (CROW) is selling its ‘2015 Born Free Wildlife Calendar’, a limited edition, 14 page, A2 wall calendar.
