Every year Alice asks me to write the Editor’s Letter for the June/Father’s Day issue, and I generally always write about our kids and being a father. This year I’m deviating from the norm, and want to tell you about an amazing gift that I received for Christmas last year from the wife and kids - it’s a subscription for an awesome magazine for those fathers who are obsessed with gadgets (I know I am), and it’s a gift that just keeps on giving for the whole year! Stuff magazine publishes info on all the latest cell phones, TVs, gaming consoles, notebooks, home entertainment systems and a whole bunch more (even coffee machines). In addition to giving you all the specs for each item, it also compares and ranks them from 1 - 10, so if you’re looking for the latest “must have” gadget, you MUST check out Stuff magazine.

Web Design Integrity Does Your Business Need a Website? The answer is YES! If you want your business to continue to succeed now and into the future, then you need one. According to studies, over 64% of people who are looking for information, use online search engines. A website enables your business to reach potential and current clients 24/7/365! People do what is easy. Accessing the Internet via a cell phone at work or home has truly made getting online simple. If you can type your problem or query into a search engine and find what you need quickly, then going through pages of ads in the yellow pages or telephone directory is redundant. Does your competition have a website? Can you afford to send your potential customers to the competition simply because they didn’t find you on the Internet? “I’ve existed fine without one up till now ... there’s no reason why that shouldn’t continue.” This is no longer a valid argument. The times, they are a changing. Every business should at the very least have a presence on the web so that customers can quickly and easily find out that you exist. The question we need to be asking is: “Can I really afford NOT to have a presence on the Internet?” Integrity Web Design offers inclusive SEO and exceptional web design for any size business, scaled to suit even the smallest budget and designed to expand whenever you are ready. Check out their affordable monthly package that sees you own your website from day one and pay over 12 months. Contact: 079 705 3690, www.webdesignintegrity.co.za.

Father’ss Day Father Harley Davidson Sportster Seventy-Two Harley Davidson motorcycles have been around since 1903, the Sportster brand since 1958. The Sportster is HD’s entrylevel motorcycle (with an entry level price of R82,000 - R125,000). It’s good for beginner riders because of the engine size (883CC or 1200CC – to get an idea of how “small” that is compare it to the Chevrolet Spark [car] which has an 1100CC engine!) It’s also well-balanced and not as low to the ground as some of the other HD bikes are. I was really chuffed recently to be offered the opportunity to test ride HD’s 2012 Sportster Seventy-Two (a 1200CC). After signing an indemnity form I was let loose on the road, settled myself onto this beautiful machine and rode to Ballito and back on a balmy autumn morning. The Seventy-Two has high handlebars (appropriately named “mini-ape” handlebars) and forward foot controls (for gears and back brake). This means my arms were completely straight and at shoulder level and my feet were stretched out ahead of me. I actually enjoyed this feel but would need to adjust the foot controls back slightly. This was because whenever I rode over a bump, my derriere left the seat and I had to rearrange myself to reach the controls again! The Seventy-Two has a lower suspension (so can be a little bumpy) but the powerful (and wonderfully noisy) engine more than makes up for that. The indicator switches have been designed closer than other models so were super easy to use. To view this ’70s style beauty (i.e. metal flake paint and other features) visit Harley Davidson on Umhlanga Rocks Drive.

Dad, you're someone to look up to no matter how tall I've grown.

Father‛s Day Father’s Day - the Consolation Prize The question is: why is Mother’s Day always such a huge affair and Father’s Day as eminently forgettable as a B-Grade movie? The answer is in the analysis of the slightly different approaches to human parenting between the male and female species:

The only time he truly shines is when she sees a spider and screams for help. He then assumes the full stature of his massive responsibility and swats the harmless creature dead. The author grudgingly admits that fathers do sometimes contribute to the overall do-it-yourself domestic needs of the house: the picture that takes three months to hang, the never-ending kitchen units and the Fear Factor plumbing disasters. Any other ideas anyone?

Dad deserves the best, so come on and make his Father’s Day, be sure to put Martinnaise on the table!

Fun Stuff For Kids To Do In The Holidays Hot Winter Activities to Keep You Warm at Sugar Bay Sitting cooped up inside during cold winter weather with little to keep enquiring minds and busy bodies occupied can make the winter holidays a challenge. This is the perfect opportunity to send children to Sugar Bay. Sugar Bay is a children’s holiday camp that caters exclusively for children between the ages of 7 and 17. It is situated in Zinkwazi Beach where a warmer climate will encourage all to shed the winter layers. Warm sea temperatures ensure that campers can indulge in water activities like surfing, snorkelling, stand-up paddle boarding, kayaking and body boarding. Campers have over 100 activities to choose from at Sugar Bay. With so much to do the foundation is laid for children to participate in a healthy lifestyle and enjoy the holidays in ways that do not involve hi-tech devices like cell phones, TV or computers. Life skills are integrated into every part of the day. Many parents have commented on their children’s increased levels of independence, self-confidence and responsibility after their children have been to Sugar Bay. With a high camper-to-counsellor ratio (3:1), children are safely supervised as they enjoy their busy days at camp. Warm days with no wind or rain encourage all to shake off their lethargy, don baggies and bikinis and get active. So if you are feeling the effects of the winter freeze, unpack summer togs and send the children to a holiday camp at Sugar Bay for a splash of sunshine to warm up the winter holidays. Contact: holidays@sugarbay.co.za, 032 – 485 3778. Visit www.sugarbay.co.za. Special: All Mum’s Mail readers will receive a R500 discount off advertised July holiday fees.

Where To Stay Rhino River Lodge We spent a blissfully peaceful weekend (a rare occurrence in our house) at Rhino River Lodge 27km north of Hluhluwe earlier this month. The lodge is situated in the heart of Zululand, with the gorgeous Lebombo Mountains serving as their backdrop. Superb game viewing resulted in us spotting a cheetah (a very proud male who paraded and posed for photos, much to our delight, and who also gave us a first-hand show of how a cheetah marks his territory); black and white rhino; lions (a small pride of three males who were not happy about being disturbed and let us know about it in no uncertain terms); buffalo; zebra; blue wildebeest; warthog; giraffe and various buck. We did not spot the leopard or the elephant – both of which were hiding elusively near the mountains. Morning, afternoon and evening game drives are available, and our very knowledgeable game ranger was an absolute delight! Our accommodation (log cabins) was very comfortable and spacious, and is able to sleep up to 5 people. Our cabin had an upstairs loft room with a king size bed, and the downstairs room had two single beds for the kids. A lounge and verandah ensured plenty of space for us to chill and read our books while Ethan safely explored the gardens. The al fresco dining under the stars, or under their thatch roof was a welcome change to traditional restaurant dining, and a feast of gastronomic proportions was on offer three times a day! A well stocked bar is available for all your refreshments, and a mini bar in the cabin is also at your disposal. Call Rhino River Lodge on 083 781 4924 or e-mail info@rhinoriverlodge.co.za or visit www.rhinoriverlodge.co.za for more info. Business Life How to Use a Promotional Pen Effectively

Donation Alert!

One of the fastest selling promotional products is a pen. Every time I attend a function, network meeting, business luncheon etc. I am given a promotional pen. Now whilst I am not complaining as my sample case is filling up by the week, other business executives (non-stationery freaks) may be. In fact, because they are inundated with the pens, they may actually be throwing them away. So, after some brainstorming in the Footstamp Promotions office, we have come up with some pretty useful ideas on how to effectively get your pens marketing for you! And the plan is quite simple: get one pen to be used by as many people as possible. Here’s how: • Petrol attendants - they always carry pens for customers to sign off debit/credit card slips. • Waitrons - same reason. • Shopping store clerks - same reason. • Security guards at complex and office parks - they always carry a pen for visitors to sign in. • Delivery/courier services - recipients need to sign for parcels. • Technicians - clients need to sign off job cards etc. • Sales reps - “sign on the dotted line please sir/ma’am...”

The platform for members to network, promote their business, get ideas and obtain referrals. Next meeting: Fri 29 June Only R75 for members and R100 for visitors. roxanne@inspiringwomen.co.za

Business Life Print Industry Pro Gordon Reid and his wife, Simone, returned from a stint in London several years ago to raise their two young daughters in Durban. But Gordon’s love of the beach lifestyle, riding his motorbike and playing squash are not the only things that have kept him in this city. Working as co-owner of MG Print Services is also a huge motivator. Just six years ago the company operated as a brokerage for print services. Today, it owns printing machines that do a variety of printing jobs for large clients. Printing work includes packaging for items like vitamins, spices, toiletries and coffee creamers. Other printing includes window decals, wallpaper, vehicle graphics, pullup banners and more. “The print industry is vast,” said Gordon, “it is the sixth biggest contributor to the GDP in S.A.” Moving from salesperson to where he is today was a “baptism of fire” said Gordon and involved “bumping heads” along the way. This was because there was so much to learn – something that is still evident in Gordon’s busy, varied business life to this day. Any one day will see Gordon signing off quotes and proofs, fetching stock, delivering printed stock, organising hand-cuts and die-cuts and generally “performing miracles” for last-minute jobs. In a word, Gordon’s typical day is “chaos”! But, by his own admission, his ADHD personality thrives on the variety and challenge. Dogged determination and constantly being on the lookout for new business have been important business skills, and Gordon’s iPhone and iPad vital business tools!

Networking Organisations BNI Gateway BNI (Business Networking International) is the largest business networking organisation in the world. Weekly meetings offer members the opportunity to share ideas, contacts and business referrals. Seeing members each week is vital when it comes to referring business because referring business is what BNI is all about. BNI’s philosophy is “Givers Gain”. By giving business to others you will get business in return. This can be seen in the BNI statistics which clearly indicate that much more business is generated in onward passed referrals by happy customers. Globally there are over 6000 chapters across more than 40 countries, with chapters all over South Africa. A typical chapter might start promptly at 7.30am on a weekday morning, end at 9am and include breakfast. Ninety-minute, weekly meetings are a requirement of the organisation and members need to send a “substitute” if they can’t attend. Each member and visitor at the meetings has a 60-second (timed) slot to stand up and say what their business is about, and what business they would like other members to give them or refer to them. As people are speaking, listeners fill in carbon copy “referral slips” saying if they would like that speaker’s business. One copy of the slip is given to the members/guests concerned, while another copy is retained by the chapter. The third copy is kept by the writers. At a later stage, if money changed hands in a business encounter as a result of the referrals, another slip titled “Thank you for the money” is handed out. One member per meeting also has the opportunity to give a 10-minute talk on their business. Only one person per profession is permitted to join a chapter. You are invited to visit BNI Gateway on Tuesday mornings. Below and alongside are some of the BNI Gateway members’ adverts.

Networking Organisations Umhlanga Women Achievers Umhlanga Women Achievers, a networking club for local business and professional women, was founded in 1994 after three businesswomen, June Flitton, Teresa de Beer and Heléne Griffiths, with the same goal, joined forces. The inaugural meeting in February was held in Umhlanga with the then Mayoress of Umhlanga, Jean Ingle, and Deputy Mayoress, Denise Owen-Jones, as honorary guests. Nineteen women signed up as the first members. In 1995, under the chairmanship of Heléne Griffiths, they adopted the slogan “to grow together through networking, sharing and enthusiasm”. The group has hosted several workshops, seminars, product promotions and social functions over the years. The highlight of the club’s activities was in 2004 when they celebrated their 10th anniversary. The function was held in the 10th month, 10 past-presidents were the speakers and each concluded her talk with 10 business tips. There were 10 tables with 10 past and present members at each. When Terri Greeff was President in 2002, she introduced an in-house competition for an Achiever of the Year that was re-instated in 2011. Each president nominates a charity to which the club makes a donation at the end of her year. The 2011 President, Heléne Griffiths, selected CHOC as her charity of choice and the club donated R4000 towards this worthy cause at their AGM earlier this year. Umhlanga Women Achievers meet on the first Wednesday of the month, alternating breakfast and evening meetings. Their next meeting is on Wednesday 6 June – a breakfast meeting with guest speaker, Isabelle de Grandpre of Neat Freak. Contact: Heléne, 031 – 572 6732. Delicious Life My Chef Saves the Day

Special offer for Mum’s Mail readers to help keep the coming winter kgs at bay!

It’s hard to put into words the profound difference My Chef has made in my family’s life. I have never been a domestic goddess and my husband learnt very early on it was either he learnt to cook or he/ we would die. Now that we are proud parents of 21 month old Cooper and I am pregnant with twins, time is really tight. Having My Chef take care of dinner means we get to spend more precious time with Cooper and I’m in bed almost an hour earlier. Speaking of Cooper and dinner time, it was usually such a mission to get him to eat dinner and with my limited cooking skills, dinner was mostly a bland affair. The other night for the first time ever, he of his own accord climbed into his feeding chair and said “dinner”. You can’t blame him looking at some of the kiddies’ meal options: bambino bolognaise (with sneaky veg), macaroni cheese, or meat balls (with those blessed hidden veg).

Having dinner taken care of is not only super convenient but is also tasty, healthy and the portions are extremely generous. I adore the concept of the meals that come prepared, leaving it to me to assemble. It gives me a kick of confidence getting it right. I also love the meals that can be slapped into the freezer and used as back up.

Green Life Esse Organic Skincare “Going Green” is not just about solar panels and electric cars. “Going Green” can affect nearly every aspect of our lives including skincare. Esse Organic Skincare, based in Richmond, KZN, is a range of facial products that helps users “Go Green”. Their products are made completely with ingredients of natural origin and the actual process of making the products is also green-friendly. For instance, the containers are made from recycled glass and the raw materials are sourced locally. I tried out the Esse Cream Cleanser and the Esse Deep Moisturiser. I’m a bit fussy when it comes to facial skincare but was very pleased to find how well the products agreed with my skin. Although fussy I’m also lazy, so was glad to see that the cleanser also removes eye make-up (bonus – I get to cut out a step!). Patting on the cleanser with just a little water on my hands made a pleasant, easy-spreading “paste” and brought out the gentle mint flavour. It had no drying effect on my skin whatsoever, due to the Baobab oil within. The Deep Moisturiser is wonderful. I just tapped it on (no vigorous rubbing needed) and was left with a unique silky-withoutbeing-oily feeling. Ylang ylang and honeybush are some of the ingredients used in this product. I think the 50ml pot will last a long time, making the cost of R290 well worth it (the 100ml Cream Cleanser costs R130.75, the 200ml R190.12).

Home Life Preparing Surfaces for Painting When it comes to painting, preparation is the key, and the key to good preparation is using a good quality primer. The purpose of a primer is to: improve adhesion to the raw surface you are priming, help to hide any imperfections in the raw material, help close up any porosity in the raw material and then finally to help with the colour development of the final colour that will be applied. Make sure you choose the right primer for the right material i.e. plaster, wood, metal. If the wall surface is already painted preparation starts by removing all loose paint by scraping or high pressure cleaning. Any existing mould or algae must be scrubbed off using sugar soap. Then apply primer to any exposed mortar to help with adhesion of the crack filler and new paint. Primers should be of good quality as this is the base for the final colour paint, and preferably a 3-in-1 primer should be used which contains a damp sealer and a biocide for Your carpet & algae control. Once crack filler is dry and upholstery cleaners sanded level, paint two coats of your choWINTER SPECIALS sen colour paint. • Baby room sanitising • Pet odour

If you are painting newly plastered walls, the process does not change. Paint walls with quality primer, fill all cracks and imperfections. Sand once crack filler is dry and paint two coats of your chosen colour paint. Choosing paints and colours is down to personal preference as there are many makes and colours. However, outside walls should be painted with something that is 100% washable. You can use anything from a full matt paint to a cashmere finish for inside walls. Home Life Biodiversity in your School In 2011 WESSA launched the Stepping Up to Sustainability concept, with the support of several partners. The idea is to put more sustainable lifestyle choices into place with a focus on targeting young people through their schools. Listed below are some simple and achievable steps that you may wish to consider for your school this year. Start by writing an Environmental Policy and then look at: • Reducing, sorting, recycling and managing waste more effectively. • Installing renewable technologies (rechargeable batteries, solar water heaters, rain water harvesting). • Increasing the biodiversity on your campus. Biodiversity is the number and variety of living organisms on earth. South Africa is the third most biologically diverse country in the world and yet it occupies only 2% of the earth’s land surface! There are many ways that you can raise awareness of this precious variety of life at school and provide valuable learning opportunities at the same time: • Manage the school’s use of cleaning products and pesticides; move over to natural, biodegradable and organic products where possible. • Plant an indigenous garden. • Plant indigenous trees in Arbor Week. • Put tree names on your indigenous trees. • Create a wild corner in the garden where wild grasses and wild flowers can thrive and damp rotting logs can provide a haven for insects, reptiles and amphibians. • Start feeding the birds and creating an awareness of their needs. • Put up a bat box in a tree where there is minimum disturbance. • Join WESSA and the international Eco Schools Programme, www.wessa.co.za. Healthy Life What’s Next After Rehab? Substance Abuse Prevention Day 26 June The first 90 to 360 days of recovery can predict how you will manage and sustain your recovery. Many addicts struggle to maintain their recovery after attending a primary addiction programme. Often people with addictions and unresolved issues (commonly trauma based) are admitted to a 28-day primary programme, which can help the client to detox and to begin to admit they have a problem. The dilemma with month-long treatments is that so many issues remain unresolved, leaving the client even more vulnerable and unable to manage life. Learning to live in recovery is very different from staying clean and sober. Bridging the recovery gap: Addicts in recovery need a hands-on, experiential approach where they practise skills they will require on the outside. Learning to manage time, taking responsibility for organising meetings, creating CVs, meeting their sponsors regularly, preparing meals, managing house duties and budgeting are just a few examples of necessary worldly skills. Consequences are part of life and therefore need to be respected. Often the approach taken at rehabs is one of punishment. Addicts in recovery have been punished enough: a reward rationale is optimal. Learning to have fun in recovery is also essential. Addicts in recovery need replacement activities such as surfing, beach walks, spiritual outdoor outings, yoga and free time where they can find their own hobbies. One other life skill that needs to be prioritised is family work. Addiction and trauma affects the entire family. The addicts in recovery and their family need to be encouraged to attend their own therapy/selfhelp groups. Healthy Life Keep Your Children Healthy this Winter

It’s New! It’s Liqui-Vite!

Each year the number of children who are hospitalised with bronchitis, pneumonia or a resistant strain of the flu virus is shockingly high. There is growing concern that children’s immune systems may be unable to cope and that the overuse of antibiotics may help the virus strains become resistant. With winter here, susceptibility to respiratory tract infections will increase and as parents we need to help our children keep these conditions at bay.

Healthy Life Molluscum Contagiosum Molluscum Contagiosum is an infection of the skin caused by a pox virus. This condition presents commonly in childhood as lots of small, pearly, translucent pimples. It may affect any area of the body and is aggravated by touching. It occurs when a child comes into direct contact with a lesion. The virus can spread through contact with contaminated objects, such as towels, clothing or toys. The pimples are usually not painful or itchy. This condition can be self-limiting. However, if there is an increase in the number and size of the pimples, the patient should seek medical treatment. The practitioner may prescribe a paint or cream to irritate the pimples. Other treatments include freezing the pimples with liquid nitrogen or cauterising the pimples under topical anaesthetic. These treatments are most effective, with no residual scarring. Source: Dr Mohamed F. Sacoor, Specialist Dermatologist, 031 – 201 3322, info@doctorskin.co.za.

Healthy Life Baby Blues and Postpartum Depression

Sarah Van Niekerk

Clinical Psychologist

The time after childbirth is perceived as a blissful period in a woman’s life. However, 50% to 80% of women experience the “baby blues”. After delivery there are rapid changes in the mother’s hormone levels which trigger the baby blues. Postpartum depression is different to the baby blues in severity and duration of symptoms. Baby blues begin during the first two to three days after birth and resolve in 10 days. Symptoms include brief crying spells, irritability, poor sleep, nervousness, and emotional reactivity. Suicidal thoughts are not present. Postpartum depression occurs in about 13 per 100 women. Risk factors for postpartum depression include: previous depression, difficult pregnancy or labour and personal problems. Symptoms of postpartum depression persist for more than 10 days and include a sad or depressed mood, agitation or irritability, feelings of worthlessness or guilt, feeling withdrawn, lack of interest in activities, loss of energy and concentration, intrusive, negative, aggressive thoughts towards the baby, changes in sleep patterns, anxiety and thoughts of suicide. These symptoms overlap with the normal difficulties a woman will experience with a newborn. The management of postpartum depression includes a number of things. The woman needs supportive care from her partner and others to assist with baby’s needs and the home, and to share her feelings with. Antidepressants are prescribed and the choice to breastfeed may require re-evaluation based on the degree of depression and type of antidepressant prescribed. Psychotherapy in the form of cognitive behavioural therapy and interpersonal therapy is also recommended. Contact: Dr Hilda Ganesen, Durban North Children’s Medical Centre, 031 – 563 4249.

Healthy Life Thermography Finds the Precursor to Cancer There are many approaches you can take to prevent breast cancer (or any cancer), including dietary changes, nutritional supplements, antioxidants, detoxification, stress reduction, and other lifestyle modifications. So it is key to detect the very earliest sign of breast cancer in order to have time to put these changes into effect before cancer gets established. For the longest time it wasn’t well known that inflammation was the culprit responsible for many chronic diseases. However, physicians now recognise that inflammation is a precursor to many diseases such as cancer, arthritis, heart disease, stroke, diabetes and high blood pressure. Thermal imaging or thermography specifically detects inflammation. It is a painless, non-invasive, clinical test without exposure to radiation and is used as part of an early detection programme which gives women of all ages the opportunity to increase Durban North their chances of detecting breast disease at a very early stage. Healthy Life What is Happening in the World of Hearing? Heidi Allan recently attended the American Academy of Audiology Conference in Boston, USA. This is a platform for the international body of audiologists to present new research, discuss developments in hearing and balance, and investigate new products. Heidi reported that one particularly relevant presentation discussed the impact of middle ear infections on Central Auditory Processing. This research stated that temporary changes in the auditory (hearing) system resulting from middle ear infections change the perception of sound quality. This is because the sound that a child hears may be incomplete or distorted and this further creates changes in the way in which the brain codes speech sounds needed for speaking, reading and writing. It was concluded that children suffering from a history of middle ear infections in their first five years are at a far higher risk of Central Auditory Processing difficulties than those who do not. At home this may be observed as a child who mishears things or has difficulty following instructions. In the classroom this may be seen as a child who has difficulty with early reading and phonics skills, has difficulty completing tasks or seems to have difficulty hearing in background noise. Ear infections have a far greater effect than the discomfort and temporary hearing loss that occur at the time of the infection. Often, the fluid in the middle ear does not clear, and while the child appears to be well again, he is still not hearing as clearly as he should. It is important, therefore, to have your child’s hearing tested regularly – once every three months if there has been a history of ear infections, sinusitis or tonsillitis, and once a year if not. Source: Heidi Allan, 031 – 566 4477, heidiallan@iafrica.com, www.heidiallan.co.za.

Beautiful Life Mastectomy Bras: How Different Should They Be? Finding a mastectomy bra in South Africa is almost impossible. This bra is usually imported and carries a heavy price that some medical aids may pay. However, it is extremely rare that they will reimburse you for more than two bras. Then there is the question of fitting: who will fit you and will they fit you properly? The same fitting principles apply when fitting a mastectomy bra. The band has to be snug and the straps have to be supporting the bra rather than the breasts or the prosthesis. If the band is not snug enough, the prosthesis will either fall out or it will be difficult to find a matching prosthesis. A well-fitted bra will enhance the healthy breast. What comes first: the bra or the prosthesis? Without the correct bra you cannot match your breast perfectly. This bra has to be correctly fitted to your breast and when you need new bras you need to be fitted again. The prosthesis needs to match the healthy breast not vice versa. Make sure your breast is scooped forward and is entirely in the cup and then match the prosthesis. A mastectomy bra should give full coverage so that it encases the breast and prosthesis. There is no reason why a mastectomy bra should be any different to a normal bra. Most ladies wearing a prosthesis or who have had a lumpectomy insist on not wearing a wire. While there is no statistically significant evidence that suggests that wire supports cause lumps leading to cancer, an ill-fitted wire can cause significant discomfort. There is great success with a wire as well as a soft cup bra in the support of the breast and prosthesis. Beautiful Life Feet Treat Do you have painful feet? Do your sore feet “show on your face”? Feet Treat is a combination of chiropody and pedicure work, dedicated to the relief of sore corns, ingrown toenails, calluses and general maintenance so necessary for healthy feet. Joan Barnard has worked in the footcare business for over 20 years, and, having been a dancer all her life, understands painful feet from first-hand experience. The foot treatment is approximately 30 to 40 minutes long, depending on the needs of the client. Feet are soaked in a spa bath with warm Savlon water, all toenails are cut in the correct manner, corns are painlessly removed, calluses scraped and ingrown toenails eradicated! A massage with body lotion and a sprinkle of talcum powder finishes the session and you will walk on air! Joan has worked in most retirement centres across Durban and environs, with elderly folk who either can’t bend to do their feet or just can’t see. And often people don’t know who to go to for this very necessary treatment. Both ladies and gentlemen of all ages benefit from having this caring source of help, and local doctors and pharmacists constantly refer clients to her. Her motto is “as we all get older our feet become even more important – so take care of them now!” Treatments are by appointment only and cost R130.

Tiny Life Titbits on Breastfeeding Breastmilk is ALIVE. It is milk in its purest form that contains all nutrients needed for your baby to grow and develop optimally in every way: physically, mentally and emotionally. No other milk even comes close for human babies. For example, breastmilk contains a different kind of fat and a different kind of protein to what is used in any artificial infant milk (formula). Breastfeeding nurtures the mother-child bond. The hormones present in a nursing mother help her to relax and care for baby: • Prolactin, the hormone that is responsible for how MUCH milk a mother makes, is called the “mothering hormone”. Because of this hormone, wild animals that are still nursing will fight to the death any intruder that threatens their young. Once these mammals have weaned their offspring they no longer show this strong urge to protect as they did before weaning. This is the way nature was designed. This is not to say that mothers who formula-feed their babies do not love and protect them! But there definitely is a powerful enhancement in the bond and protection that breastfeeding mothers feel towards their babies, especially once over the initial hardships of breastfeeding in the first few days/weeks. • Oxytocin, the “love hormone” that helps your milk to flow or “let down”, also helps you to totally relax and feel an incredible love wash over you for your baby. You may feel like dozing off while feeding, and baby also quickly relaxes and nods off as this hormone is also present in the breastmilk! No wonder mothers complain that baby is falling asleep at the breast! Enjoy this natural cocktail of hormones while nurturing your baby.

Tiny Life Support Group for New Mums Opens in Durban Being a new mum is very exciting, but it may also be a difficult adjustment, at times arousing a host of mixed emotions. Although family support is extremely important, sometimes new mums who are feeling overwhelmed need to share their thoughts and feelings with other women who have been through a similar experience and can truly understand. The Durban New Mums Support Group aims to offer just that to women who are battling to cope or adjust after the birth of their baby and need a safe, friendly, nonjudgemental environment in which to share their concerns and emotions. The group meets every Friday at 9.30am in Durban North and is free to any interested mums. Support Group leader, Alexandra Wallis, says: “I know how difficult being a new mum can be and I have started this group to help mums who are struggling and need a friendly chat with people who understand!” The Durban New Mums Support Group is one of many run by the South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG) – a non-profit organisation (NPO) educating patients, families, mental health professionals and the general public on the nature and management of mental illnesses. SADAG support groups allow members the opportunity to form connections with others experiencing similar troubles and to learn from one another in a non-judgemental atmosphere.

Tiny Life Cherub Tree Reusable Nappies Cherub Tree Reusable Nappies are machine-washable nappies with flushable liners. They are made in one size and come with poppers that can be adjusted as baby grows. So apart from benefitting the environment you also save huge amounts of money. They are as easy to use as disposables (you just don’t throw them away) and are available in nine different colours. The nappies come with two inners made of microfibre and hemp that are inserted into a waterproof cover. Because of the poppers that can be adjusted, you can use the nappies from birth right through until the child is out of nappies. The inners absorb urine and are therefore washable. When the nappy is soiled, remove it, put it in a dry bucket and then put another one on. Place a flushable liner on the nappy that catches the poop. Washing instructions: • Remove all solids and flush down the toilet before washing. • Separate the insert(s) from the nappy outer. • Rinse the outer and the insert in cold water. Squeeze out excess water and store in a dry bucket. Do not soak. • Wash on a normal cycle with half the recommended washing powder. • Do not use bleach or fabric softeners as they will break down the PUL lamination which will significantly shorten the expected life span of the nappy. These types of chemicals, particularly fabric softener, will also inhibit the absorbency of the nappy.

Young Life Cell Phones for Children The world of BlackBerry, with its irresistible pings, beeps and buzzes, is an alluring one for both adults and children. What are the benefits and disadvantages to this pervasive tool, particularly to children and what boundaries should be put in place especially for teens and tweens? Mum’s Mail spoke to the Suttons, a Durban family, about the subject. Benefits: • Primarily, Stuart and Sandy Sutton want a cell phone for their children for safety reasons. • Being on BlackBerry in particular is a great (and cheap) way for teens/tweens to stay in touch with their friends (important at this age) and a good way for parents to monitor their children’s moves if they also use BBM (BlackBerry messaging). • Instant access to the Internet on BlackBerry is handy when it comes to doing homework (“and I don’t feel like switching on my laptop,” said 13 year old Jenna Sutton).

Disadvantages: • Both parents expressed concern about uncontrolled access to the Internet (for example, when children at parties look at “naughty” things). • Target for theft. • Being exclusive socially in the formation of “groups” that cut certain people out. • Youngsters hiding behind the safety of text and being more forward with people than they would be face to face. • Getting a BlackBerry because of peer pressure. Boundaries instituted by the Suttons: • Cell phone only given to their children when they started high school (because they are more independent at this age). • Values taught at home that would help them not to get into compromising situations. • Not to say anything via BBM that they wouldn’t say face to face. • Cell phones not allowed in the bedroom after bedtime and not to interfere with family time. What do you think about this subject? Send your comments to editor@mumsmail.com with “Cell Phones” in the subject line.

Young Life Beesting and the Long White Beard

WOOD CREATIONS

It was a very hot day. By the time the children got to the river, Beesting was already splashing in the shallow waters, chomping and biting into the water as if he was trying to catch some fish. Then he looked up to see where Artine was. She was hovering right in the middle over some rumbling waters. Her wings flapped quickly making a vrrrrrrrrrrrr sound as she balanced in the air. She turned and with a big smile pointed towards the middle of the water. “Come children, come Beesting. Come over here to the middle where the big rock pool is. It’s deeper here and you’ll cool down quicker. You can also sit on this big rock and dangle your feet in the water. Come quickly, I want to show you something.” Beesting, as usual, was totally beside himself and he misbehaved. “I have to get to the middle of the water first,” he thought to himself. He jumped right in and splashed soooo much that he nearly knocked little Savvy over. A couple of birds who were looking for some berries on the trees close by flew a bit closer to watch the commotion. When everyone was finally in the middle at the rock pool Artine said, “Now slowly turn to your right. Can you all see it? Edward shouted excitedly, “Yes, I can see it. It looks just like an old man’s face with a long white beard.” It was then that Beesting heard that familiar voice rumbling towards him again, “Hrrrrrrooooommmmmmm Beesting. You cannot go through life and always expect to be first you know…” Oh dear, Beesting has so many lessons to learn in the forest.

Young Life Is Adoption for Everyone? “Adoption is for everyone who is found to be fit and suitable - not just for those who can’t conceive their own children,” says Justin Foxton, founder of The Baby House in Umhlanga. “With advances in blood testing and developmental assessment, adoption is no more risky from a medical perspective than having your own. Provided you work with a reputable child protection organisation, adoption is inexpensive and the process should take no longer than a few months. The new Children’s Act of 2010 is a world class piece of legislation. It makes the child’s best interests paramount and ensures that adoption horror stories of birth parents returning after years to ‘claim their child’ are a thing of the past.”

It is time to address the misconceptions and myths surrounding adoption and actively promote it so that more people consider adoption as a first option, believes Justin. Justin and his wife Cathy are themselves in the process of adopting their first child – having chosen first to adopt before having their own. Great work in addressing misconceptions is being done by the National Adoption Coalition and Justin has seen a shift in thinking at The Baby House he and Cathy run – a welcome byproduct of the emancipation of women and an independent younger generation who are now allowed to think differently about family. From the Baby House Justin has seen many successful adoptions involving Perler Beading assists single parents, gay couples, mixed-race girls & boys with: families, couples who haven’t been able Strengthening of fine to conceive and families who are adding • motor skills • Improving concentration to their numbers. Educated Life Enjoy the Ocean in Safety and Convenience

HAMPTONS PRIMARY SCHOOL

Alan Wallace of Roxy Learn to Surf conducts surfing lessons for boys and girls aged seven to 16 years at the Marine Surf Lifesaving Club (Addington Beach). The lessons take place on Saturdays and Sundays from 8am to 9.30am and from 9.30am to 11am. Alan, who was a lifesaver for many years, has now also introduced “Water Safety Awareness” classes which take place on weekends on an hourly basis after the surfing lessons. “I want to get kids outdoors for healthy entertainment and fitness. I also want to help create awareness for people who are scared of the ocean, to teach them about the sea, get them into the sea gradually, and teach them how to get out of difficult situations or even prevent them getting into them,” said Alan. Alan was prompted to start these lessons because of an obvious lack of water safety awareness in our community. “On a recent two-week stint in Sodwana Bay, I did 18 rescues and I wasn’t even on lifeguard duty! Four of those would have been fatal if not for intervention,” he explained. But for many youngsters and their parents, getting down to Addington Beach can be difficult. To address this situation Alan has introduced the “Surf Shuttle”. The Surf Shuttle is aimed at primary and high school children who may not have extramural activities during the week. The shuttle currently services three schools (Danville Girls, Chelsea Prep and Durban Girls’ College), picking up six or seven children after school hours, taking them to the beach for a lesson and then taking them back to school again.

Educated Life Magic Moments PreSchool and Baby Crèche

Give Your Child The Best Exciting news! After many years of fundraisStart! ing and donations from charity organisations Magic Moments (situated in Northdene) has started building a special needs classroom for children with learning disabilities. The project was initiated after the school received numerous calls from parents looking for place for their children. Over the years the school managed, with limited resources, to help a number of children. They were able to help the children up to a certain stage and thereafter get them into other schools that catered for children with learning disabilities. Now, by having their own classroom and facilities, Magic Moments can help children to reach their potential. The school will teach the children on a one-to-one basis as each child has a different learning style. Children are either visual learners, auditory learners or kinaesthetic/tactile learners. They are also going onto the Cami teaching method which encourages children to learn at their own pace through using a computer. Magic Moments has a speech therapist and an audiologist who come to the school to work with the children. The services of registered counsellors have also been enlisted. The counsellors will do assessments and screening of the children to enable Magic Moments to provide learners with the exact education they need and to ensure that all gaps are monitored. Classes will be kept small for the personal touch and help. Contact: 031 – 708 1524, magicmoments@absamail.co.za, www.magicmomentspreschool.co.za.

Educated Life Parents – Are You Stressed at Exam Time?

ORD PRE-SCHOOL OXF

Did you know that students who excel at school are not necessarily more intelligent than their peers? The difference between successful students and their friends is usually just that they have learned to study smarter. Unless students have been geared with a set of skills that teaches them to get the most from their study, it can be difficult to progress with learning. Sitting at a desk and staring at the pages of a textbook without a positive focus is not very productive and can be disheartening for students who want to achieve. Parent tips: • Buy new stationery and ensure your child has all the essential textbooks and study notes for each subject. • Reward study targets achieved. • Ensure the household is a calm place, conducive to studying. • Keep healthy snacks in the fridge and provide nutritious meals. • Encourage your child to do well and ensure they know that you are proud of their efforts.

New admissions are done throughout the year. Please contact the school on 032 - 533 3632. www.sunfieldhomeschool.co.za

Student tips: • Start revising early. • Work out a revision timetable for each subject. • Break revision time into small slots with a short break in between. • Time yourself when you complete exemplars or practice papers. • Go through notes with your mom or dad.

Party Life Relay Race Party Invitation ideas: • Write party invitation details on small toy batons then hand deliver to guests. • Make triangular racing flags from plastic, attach to dowel sticks and write party info on the plastic. Cake: Bake an ordinary, flat sponge cake and ice with chocolate icing. Draw oval lines on the cake with white icing to form a race track. Decorate with small plastic racing figures and racing flags. Décor: Decorate your garden or outdoor venue with crêpe paper ribbons, streamers and large racing flags. Use yellow ribbon to indicate the start and finish lines. Games: • Big Foot Relay – Ask guests to each bring two shoeboxes to the party. Tape the lids onto the boxes and then cut a three centimetre-wide and a ten centimetrelong slit in each top. Have the contestants slip their feet into the slits in the boxes and race! • Book Worm Relay – line up the players and give each a book to balance on their heads without using their hands. They must race to the finish line without dropping the book or touching it with their hands (if they do, they must return to the start and begin again). • Stuff-it Race – divide the players into teams of four or five. Select one member from each team to dress up in an oversized tracksuit. Have the remaining team members inflate 50 balloons and stuff them into the tracksuit without popping the balloons. The first team to use up all the balloons wins. • Bowlegged Race – get each player to hold a tennis ball between their knees and race to the finish line. Party Life Magical Flexible Chocolate

Bev Delew of Mum’s Mail tried out the Magic Choc with her son Cole. She said, “The Magic Choc was fun to play with. Cole made a dog and rather liked that he could eat him afterwards, although he didn’t eat all of him. I had a go too and it was pleasant, but the chocolate was a bit too hard for a five year old boy to really get into shape without battling a bit. Years of being told ‘don’t play with your food’ made me a little uneasy about playing with the chocolate and then eating it, but for the kids it’s fun and different, isn’t too messy and doesn’t melt.” Each pack retails at R89.99 (Starter Pack makes five models) and comes complete with the milk, white and dark chocolate, an antibacterial hand wipe sachet and model guide to kick-start your model ideas.

C

Magic Choc is a flexible, mouldable chocolate that involves all the family getting together in the kitchen and creating anything their imagination dreams of, then eating the fun treat. A patent-protected method of processing the chocolate allows it to set, while remaining flexible, resulting in a delicious, fun product which can be formed to create as many shapes as the imagination allows without any sticky mess. Simply by shaping in your hand, the chocolate will become flexible - no need to heat or cool the chocolate. A great idea for parties, fun days or as gifts.

Relaxed Life Why Visit Luthuli Museum? Dedicated to the life and legacy of Africa’s First Nobel Peace Laureate, a visit to the Luthuli Museum will leave you inspired and in awe. Situated in the township of Groutville, near KwaDukuza, it is fitting that today Chief Albert Luthuli’s original 1927 home stands as a national monument. Take the time to walk through the rooms where top ANC leaders like Nelson Mandela spent the night. Listen to the powerful words contained in Chief Albert Luthuli’s original speech made in Oslo, Norway in 1961 when he accepted the award. Or sit at the bench where he met with former United States senator Robert Kennedy in 1966. The home provides the setting for a national exhibition entitled “In Conversation: Albert John Mvumbi Luthuli and Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela” that is presented to the audience as a dialogue between these two Nobel Peace Laureates. The museum is set in lovely landscaped gardens and in a safe and secure environment. Opened in 2004 by former president Thabo Mbeki, the Luthuli Museum is different from others in South Africa. It dismisses the notion that museums are boring places with dusty old pieces of paper and old objects in glass cases on display. Instead, it supports the thinking that this is a living museum reflecting the values of non-racialism, democracy and human rights of a man clearly ahead of his time.

Madagascar 3 Prometheus Starts 8 June Starts 15 June

The Luthuli Museum organises annual educational and public programmes aimed at informing and encouraging active debate on current issues. The programmes are community orientated and act as platforms for wider exposure to the modern world. Also on site is a multipurpose Interpretative Centre that can accommodate workshops, meetings, openings and movie screenings.
