FROM THE EDITOR We are quite excited about all the recent technological leaps we have taken at Mum’s Mail. Take Facebook for example. While most people jumped onto the Facebook bandwagon way back in 2004, Mum’s Mail resisted the urge. “What do we need a Facebook page for?” was my dismissive reply. And although most people started “tweeting” way back in 2006, Mum’s Mail only officially started “chirping” a year ago, around the same time we created our “page” on Facebook. I am ashamed to admit though that I still don’t know my passwords and have to refer back to my little black book each time I get the urge to expose my inner thoughts to the world. Does anyone else hate “tweeting” as much as I do, as a girl cannot possibly say what she needs to say in only 140 characters!? Ludicrous! Late last year we did a total upgrade of our website, making it far more userfriendly, while incorporating a search function and a blog, which was followed by an electronic e-mail newsletter every Friday morning (we are still trying different layouts for the newsletter, so please bear with us). The next logical step was a online version of the printed magazine, in the same format. So you can now access our magazine and read it online page by page, and even “virtually turn” the pages – visit www. mumsmail.com to read the “virtual” mag.

Cranio-sacral Therapy

Veni Maharaj

Cranio-sacral Therapy (CST) encourages the body’s natural healing process through the use of gentle touch and very light pressure. It has a background in Osteopathy. The cranio-sacral system includes our brain, spinal cord, nerves and the cerebrospinal fluid. When the cranio-sacral system is supported through this gentle form of body work, the body’s natural healing power is recharged, and patients experience a wide range of health benefits.

CST can prevent the need for invasive surgical interventions and over-reliance on pharmaceuticals. It can also be used pre- and post-surgery to normalise traumatised tissue, promote fluid exchange and release toxic anaesthetics from the nervous system. It is effective in helping patients get moving again after a sustained health crisis or injury.

Clients report increased energy, improved concentration, better sleep, deep relaxation, less sinus pressure, released emotions and a new joy for living. Anxiety and depression dissipate markedly. CST is gentle enough for all ages including newborn babies (after a long or difficult birth). Babies begin to gurgle, stretch out their little bodies and often fall into a deep, relaxed sleep. Troubled children find ways to express themselves.

Surprising results for anxiety and depression in both young children, adolescents and adults. POSTNATAL DEPRESSION resolves quickly with Cranio-Sacral Therapy.

CST is the missing puzzle piece in the efficacy of many dental procedures, is highly effective in treating facial asymmetry, cranial imbalances, tissue hypertonicity (which plays a role in chronic bad bite), jaw joint pain, headaches, shoulder, neck and body pain. It is performed on fully clothed clients on a comfortable massage table. Babies can be held by their mother or therapist during a session.

PREGNANCY & BABIES What To Eat While Breastfeeding?

Domestic Childminder & CPR Course

One of the most puzzling things to new mothers is what they can and can’t eat while breastfeeding. Some mothers cut so much from their diet that they wonder what is left to eat. So what is a new mum to do? What to eat to make enough milk, yet not have a colicky baby? Some mothers can eat almost anything, while others need to be more careful (it was recently thought that this may be due to some mothers having leaky/inflamed gut syndrome).

Course includes: • Basic Childcare • First Aid, CPR and Choking • HIV and AIDS Awareness • Stimulation and Play • New Courses: • Basic Housekeeping • Home Based Care for the Elderly

CPR courses for Schools, Moms, Dads, Grannies and Babysitters. Booking Essential! Contact Gail Starr (033) 386 4451 • 083 445 1441 or gail@starr.co.za www.vitallifetraining.co.za • Stimulates all the senses and promotes learning • Develops perceptual motor skills • Unique range of climbing and clambering equipment • Original Clamber Club action songs and exciting props • Gives parents great stimulation ideas for home

Certain foods to be aware of while breastfeeding: • The number one cause of colic or discomfort in breastfed babies is dairy in the mother’s diet, especially milk, cheese and yoghurt. Humans are the only mammals who think they need to drink another mammal’s milk in order to make milk! The protein in cows’ milk passes straight through to baby. The calcium in processed cows’ milk is not well absorbed so rather substitute with tahini, sesame seeds and leafy greens. You can make your own “milk” by using a grinder/blender to chop oats flakes till fine, sieve, then blend with water and banana, or grind raw nuts into powder (not peanuts). • Cruciferous veggies often cause winds in young breastfed babies (broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage etc.) as well as some legumes such as peas, beans and peanuts. • Chocolate (white or brown) contains a substance which causes tummy cramps in babies when eaten by mum.

headoffice@clamberclub.com • www.clamberclub.com

The rule of thumb is to eat any healthy food in its most natural state possible, until your baby lets you know otherwise. Enjoy the bounty of foods in season. Feed yourself well and enjoy breastfeeding your baby.

KIDS’ CORNER/LET’S PARTY! Reading Gift We all want our children to reach their full potential so that they can live their lives to the full, but often parents don’t know where to start. Over the years Joanne Madgwick has found that if a child develops a love for reading, they are usually well set on the path to success. Developing a love for books within your child is easier than you imagine and it’ll be a power they are able to carry with them for the rest of their lives. From when they are tiny babies, children need to be read to. This reading time, however, is not that of children’s picture books but rather great works and awesome poetry. At this stage they don’t understand the content but they are hearing and learning the rhythm and the flow of the language. This gives them a head start in their language development and establishes a good habit of reading within the home. Once they show interest in holding the book, add picture stories to your reading time. Children are designed to imitate you, so let them see you reading, and show them that you value books.

WOOD CREATIONS

If an older child does not want to read chapter books, find non-fiction books that link to their passions and interests. They’ll soon start paging through the book and attempting to read the information they wish to know about. A love for reading is more than a tool to make it through school. It is a gift you give your children that’ll aid them in ultimately being able to climb great heights and search great depths.

KIDS’ CORNER/LET’S PARTY! Fun and Safety in the Water

PARTY STUFF

Spring is here which means fun times around swimming pools, rivers, dams and seas. Parents and child minders are therefore urged to be vigilant at ALL times to ensure safety for children. Swim training is also important when it comes to children’s safety. Starting with swimming lessons in early September will help educate your child on water safety, and will extend your child’s pleasure time and swimming season. Equip your child with the tools to grow into a confident and happy individual whenever around water. Help your child know and understand the dangers of being around a swimming pool – especially their own home pool. Drowning statistics around the world have shown a tendency towards these tragedies increasing.

EDUCATION & SCHOOLING Audiblox

Audiblox

Programme helps to increase intelligence, sharpens attention and concentration, develops accurate perception, improves long and short term memory, promotes logical thoughts and reading and helps build self esteem and confidence.

Audiblox is a system of cognitive exercises aimed at the development of foundational learning skills. A foundational skill is not the same as a process, strategy or technique. By way of explanation: in order to be a soccer player a person first has to master foundational skills like heading and dribbling the ball. After learning these skills he can learn strategies and techniques. Audiblox develops and automates the foundational skills of reading, writing, spelling, mathematics and the skills required to learn subject matter. The programme is flexible in that it is suitable for tutoring one learner or teaching eight learners in a classroom. It is suitable for all age groups, can be adapted to the intellectual levels of learners, increased to make it more challenging, and can be smoothly integrated with any curriculum.

Because Audiblox prepares a foundation for exposure to achievement in foundational skills, learning difficulties can be prevented. It is effective for dyslexia, improves classroom management and discipline, builds self-image and motivation for learning, and creates a basis for lifelong learning. The Audiblox system achieves better results the more it is practised. It is usually effective if a person practises twice a week for an hour at a time, or for half an hour five days a week (less for pre-school children with minor learning difficulties, and more for children or adults with severe learning problems). Visible results can be expected after three to six weeks, ! although some students may require more practice. Improvement, though, is seldom gradual – it is usually sudden. After this clearly visible initial intellectual jump the learner may find himself on a plateau followed by another leap forward and so on. The ideal is for learners to continue on the programme as long as possible.

EDUCATION & SCHOOLING SMART KIDS

Executive Functioning

EDUCATIONAL TOYS

Early Learning Through Play

Children with learning disabilities may struggle with the following: (1) Flexibility - when a child is faced with change or a seemingly easy task that becomes complicated, frustration sets in because problem solving is not successful. Difficulties occur when no workable choice can be found. Points to consider: • Cannot tolerate a change. • Difficulty with open-ended assignments that require brainstorming/choosing a topic. (2) Working Memory - children with working memory problems are unable to remember and use important information in order to move to the next task. They falter when required to remember a series of directions, give ideas in response to directions, and express ideas. Points to consider: • Trouble following directions, particularly orally. • Difficulty with complex, multi-step tasks. • Do not remember what has just been read or explained.

(3) Self-Monitoring - children with monitoring difficulties may not realise they are not following directions. They do not understand what they are achieving based on teacher feedback. They can be surprised by poor marks. Points to consider: • Make “careless” mistakes in maths. • Trouble proofreading and checking. • Skip test questions without noticing. (4) Planning and setting priorities - children with planning difficulties become overwhelmed by multi-tasks. They cannot create structure and order in their ideas and lives. Achieving goals is difficult. Points to consider: • Come to school unprepared. • Underestimate how much time/effort a project takes. • Overwhelmed trying to juggle multiple-faceted tasks.

WHAT TO DO/WHERE TO STAY

Fireworks in a Glass

Mom, Where Do Babies Come From? As a parent do you dread hearing these words from your young children? Do you feel awkward and unsure how to answer? Then help is at hand in the form of parent support workshops run by Anna de Sousa. Workshops are held on demand for five to ten people at a time and usually in a parent’s home. The workshops run for 90 minutes. In the first half hour Anna gives parents tips on how to get started on the subject of talking to their children about sex. She discusses age appropriate information, how to be approachable and why we need to be responsible for telling our children. She includes the importance of values (e.g. relationship respect, responsibility and caring), something often lacking in the school system. Subjects range from simply naming the body parts, to puberty, masturbation, and “good touch” and “bad touch”. This teaching time is followed by an hour during which parents are free to ask questions. The latter helps parents realise they are not alone when it comes to struggling with sensitive issues.

Use What? • Water • Oil • Food Colouring • Tall Glass • Another Cup/Glass • Fork Do What? • Fill the tall glass almost to the top with room-temperature water. Warm water is okay, too. • Pour a little oil into the other glass (1-2 tablespoons). • Add a couple of drops of food colouring. I used one drop of blue and one drop of red, but you can use any colours. • Briefly stir the oil and food colouring mixture with a fork. You want to break up the food colouring drops into smaller drops, but not thoroughly mix the liquid. • Pour the oil and colouring mixture into the tall glass. • Now watch! The food colouring will slowly sink in the glass, with each droplet expanding outward as it falls, resembling fireworks falling into water.

Teaching our children at home about sex gives them the tools with which to make informed decisions later in life, thereby acting as a preventative measure. It also creates an open relationship between parent and child so that if there is a problem the child feels more able to approach the parent for help. Informing our children correctly also affects other areas of their lives. It helps them resist peer pressure, have boundaries, do well academically and emotionally, and helps them relate appropriately to peers and authority figures.

So What? Food colouring dissolves in water, but not in oil. When you stir the food colouring in the oil, you are breaking up the colouring droplets (though drops that come into contact with each other will merge... blue + red = purple). Oil is less dense than water, so the oil will float at the top of the glass. As the coloured drops sink to the bottom of the oil, they mix with the water. The colour diffuses outward as the heavier coloured drop falls to the bottom. Activity courtesy of:

U m ge

November 2011 will welcome a new tradition of family entertainment to Pietermaritzburg with the arrival of Mr Funtubbles Fabulous Family Funfair at Liberty Midlands Mall. Presently under construction, the permanent indoor funfair will be located in the food court area and will provide a bright all-weather venue, fully stocked with imported rides and games for the entertainment of the whole family. Loosely modelled around the more traditional outdoor funfairs, Mr Funtubbles heralds a new era in family entertainment with rides like the family swing, rockin’ tug, jumpin’ star and bumper cars adding to the mix. The XD Theatre is another first for the city - the 4D motion ride will have you screaming in exhilaration as you experience the thrill of a virtual reality trip in a fantasy world of roller coasters, racing cars or mine carts.
