World Braille Day

The KwaZulu-Natal Blind and Deaf Society is a leading service provider in the field of Blindness and Deafness in KwaZulu-Natal. World Braille Day is commemorated annually on 4 January to celebrate the invention of Braille and the importance of Braille to those who are blind. Braille was created by Louis Braille, born in France on 4 January 1809. Braille is the key to literacy, education, employment and inclusion for persons who are blind. World Braille Day provides an opportunity to raise awareness on the issues faced by people who are blind and to advocate for equal access to the same reading and learning opportunities as their sighted counterparts.

The KwaZulu-Natal Blind and Deaf Society was established in 1936, and their purpose is to provide services and opportunities that ultimately improve the quality of life of Blind and Partially-Sighted people. During the 1960s they extended their services to the Deaf and Hard of Hearing people.

9

The society currently reaches the poor, unemployed African people living in rural areas who do not have the finances or ability to receive services. The greatest challenge that the society faces, is how to improve these individuals’ quality of life. The sad situation is that these almost forgotten people are not only deprived, but also disabled, which leaves them feeling very inadequate and incapable, and the sad fact is that most of them receive no external assistance. There are many ways that you can support the KwaZulu-Natal Blind and Deaf Society: • Cash donations • Debit order donations • Donations in kind • Collection tins • Order their personal or corporate diary • Leave a bequest Visit www.bdskzn.org.za for more information.

World AIDS Day

World AIDS Day takes place on 1 December each year. It’s an opportunity for people worldwide to unite in the fight against HIV, to show support for people living with HIV, and to commemorate those who have died from an AIDS-related illness. Founded in 1988, World AIDS Day was the first ever global health day.

Today, scientific advances have been made in HIV treatment, there are laws to protect people living with HIV and we understand so much more about the condition. Despite this, many people do not know the facts about how to protect themselves and others, and stigma and discrimination remain a reality for many people living with the condition.

Why is World AIDS Day important? Globally, there are an estimated 36.7 million people who have the virus. Despite the virus only being identified in 1984, more than 35 million people have died of HIV or AIDS, making it one of the most destructive pandemics in history.

World AIDS Day is important because it reminds the public and government that HIV has not gone away - there is still a vital need to raise money, increase awareness, fight prejudice and improve education.

World AIDS Day is an opportunity to show solidarity with the millions of people living South Africa has the highest population with HIV worldwide. Most people do this by of people living with HIV and AIDS and the wearing an HIV awareness red ribbon (and disease has claimed thousands of lives other products) on the day. leaving behind many AIDS orphans. Be SunSmart this Summer

Each year during the hot summer months, CANSA steps up its skin cancer awareness communication through its SunSmart Campaign, to remind South Africans of the dangers of over-exposure to the sun. Running from mid-November to January, the campaign includes beach, workplace and school activations, as well as sharing education online on CANSA’s platforms.

everyone, regardless of racial or ethnic group, is at risk of getting skin cancer. Although people with darker skins are less susceptible, because their skin contains more natural melanin that protects against sun damage, everyone is at risk from the harsh African sun. Just one blistering sunburn in childhood or adolescence more than doubles a person’s chances of developing melanoma later in life. Children should not be getting sunburned at any age, especially since there are a range of very effective sun protection methods that can be used. Minimise time outside during summer when UV levels are at their strongest – between 10am and 3pm. Parents and guardians need to be extra vigilant about sun protection for their infants and toddlers at all times.

CANSA reminds all South Africans to be SunSmart throughout the year and especially during summer, as skin cancer remains one of the most common cancers. South Africa has the second highest incidence of skin cancer in the world after Australia, and in particular one of the highest incidences of melanoma worldwide, as far as Caucasians are concerned. At least 20 000 South Africans are diagnosed annually with nonmelanoma skin cancers, and approximately 1 500 are diagnosed with melanoma. For more information about how to protect your family from the harmful effects of the It is important to take note of the fact that sun, visit www.cansa.org.za.

Give Your Children the Building Blocks they Need to Find Balance

Our children are growing up in a different world to the one where we, their parents, spent our formative years. Equipping our children to navigate through their world is one of the best gifts we can give them, and I believe that there are four key tools that will help them identify their best path, and stick to it, no matter what distractions they encounter: confidence, personal resilience, emotional intelligence and self-worth.

their personal space with their parents and families. They’re confident that the future will be fine, and that their family institution provides a backstop for all their decisions.

Emotional intelligence is being secure in the knowledge of who/whom you are and what you stand for – and it’s not just children and teenagers that need to learn this skill! Our children have strong opinions that they need the space to vent – and should know how to Confidence comes from young people do it with respect. being able to ask themselves questions, identify answers, and having the strength of Self-worth is a state of mind, and not a character to act on those answers. Make a Nature Walk Bracelet

Disappointed with your child’s results? With our revolutionary programme in 6-10 weeks, you can:

This is a great activity to get the kids playing outdoors. You could even turn this into a fun party game/challenge, and award a prize for the best bracelet. First, you’ll need some tape. You can use duct tape, parcel tape or masking tape. Simply wrap it around your wrist until it overlaps to form a ring – you may need to get a grown-up to help you here. Oh, and make very sure you do this with the sticky side on the OUTSIDE; otherwise the only bit of nature stuck to your bracelet will be every single hair on your wrist. Ouch! Now, as you go for your walk, you can look out for natural objects with which you can decorate your bracelet. You could decide on a colour theme, or perhaps collect a rainbow of colours from red to violet. If you want to keep your bracelet for longer you could cut it off when you get home and use sticky-backed plastic to seal in the objects. To finish, puncture a hole at either end so you can retie it with a piece of ribbon or string to form a bracelet.

This process is called sublimation. When dry ice is put in water it accelerates the sublimation process, creating clouds of fog that fill up your dry ice bubble until the pressure becomes too much and the bubble explodes, spilling fog over the edge of the bowl. Snowman Ornament Keepsake

THE ONE STOP

PARTY PLANNING

Christmas is always a great time for crafts - there are so many wonderful things to enjoy making and creating with your children. It’s always great fun to make and your family and friends will always love receiving them! You will need: • Salt dough (recipe below) • Straw • Ribbon/string • Acrylic paints • Marker pen • Rolling pin • Paint brushes

NEW SLUSH PUPPY MACHINE

To make the salt dough: • 1 cup salt • 2 cups plain flour • ¾ cup boiling water Add salt and plain flour to bowl, gradually adding hot water. Mix together until a dough forms, making sure it is not too sticky. Knead the dough. Roll out a large enough area to make two handprints. Be mindful of how thick the salt dough is - you want the plaque to be thick enough to make it sturdy but not too thick that you are waiting weeks for it to dry out. You may want to add some holes using a straw so you can thread some string through and hang it up. Place it in the oven at 120 degrees for around three hours. Begin by adding the snow at the bottom and painting the hand prints white. Then add the blue sky and leave to dry. Add some detail to the snowmen using a fine paintbrush and a marker pen. Give the snowmen hats, scarves, faces and buttons and add some falling snow to complete the effect.
