The Most Romantic Escape Tucked away in mid-Illovo (which is just a little way off the beaten track between Durban and Pietermaritzburg), lies the little gem that is Gwahumbe Reserve Game & Spa. While the spa treatments were superb, the food delicious, the game drive exciting, and the staff so attentive and friendly – the absolute highlight of the trip was the dinner in the Hydro Bath! We had no idea what to expect and arrived for dinner at the main boma. We were then whisked off to the spa where a special room had been prepared for us with candles, a bubble bath, a threecourse gourmet dinner, and a bottle of bubbly on ice! It was the most romantic experience ever.

On offer indoors is a gym, steam room, two bars, a lounge, a smoking lounge and a golf clubhouse.
The kids’ entertainment team was on top form and kept the kids on the go 24/7! A slippery slide that was erected on a grassy slope was a big hit, with a certain marketing manager also very daringly giving it a go (more than once) and displaying her catching skills on the way down. We hardly saw our son all weekend! My hubby and son enjoyed a quad bike experience which they absolutely loved judging by their very dirty faces when they got back. The hotel also caters for conferences and weddings, and there was a wedding on the go when we were there, with the bride and groom flying to the top of the mountain peak for their photos – so special! Rates vary dependent on the type of room selected (from standard, to superior, to honeymoon, to presidential). Our inter-leading rooms were very comfortable and offered a full bathroom in each room plus a verandah. Rates include a breakfast and dinner buffet, as well as two tea times. I did not have high expectations of the buffet, as they are usually mediocre at best, but the hotel offered a very large range of exceptionally tasty and freshly made food – we lacked nothing!
