Hibberdene Holiday Home
Mercury Hibberdene Children’s Holiday Home For more than 80 years, the Mercury Hibberdene Children’s Holiday Home has offered impoverished children the opportunity to have a short seaside holiday, free from worry and deprivation. More than 1 500 children are given this opportunity each year in a safe, happy environment with nutritious meals and managed by committed staff. These programmes are structured by Sherlock Sithole (youth worker) in conjunction with doctor of education and psychologist, Maliga Chetty. They select and train the team leaders for the programmes, all of whom are training to be teachers or social workers. In addition, they tailor programmes to be age specific so that every child from youngest to oldest will benefit. “The Mercury Hibberdene Home offers the most beautiful, peaceful place for children to forget the humdrum of their lives for a while. They respond so well to our programmes in this environment and they have such fun while they learn”, said Sherlock. In honour of Mandela Day on 18 July, Mum’s Mail will be collecting much needed items and donations for the home, which will be handed over to them on Mandela day. Here is their wish list: • Toiletries for girls and boys (face cloths, bath soap, tooth brush, tooth paste, shampoo, conditioner, body lotion and Vaseline) • Single bed fitted sheets and pillow cases (pink/blue) • Bath towels • Cooking oil • Breakfast cereal • Tinned peaches • Apricot jam • Peanut butter • Rice • Baked beans • Sweets, chocolates and chips. Symptoms of Stress in Children Typical stressed behaviour can include crying, whining, poor listening, day dreaming, nail biting, fighting with friends and family, being overly cautious, poor school performance, lack of appetite or eating more than usual and disturbed sleep with frequent nightmares or bedwetting. If a child is experiencing stress, their bodies, minds and feelings are also naturally affected. This is the same for adults too. Possible symptoms of stress can include: Physical signs: tense muscles, headaches, stomach aches, rapid heartbeat, being cold, skin rash, shakiness, disturbed sleep, fatigue and illness. Mental signs: poor concentration, whirling mind, forgetfulness, difficulty problem solving, being easily distracted, confusion, being irrational. Emotional signs: fear, anxiety, frustration, sadness, anger, being overwhelmed, panic, extreme sensitivity, irritability, helplessness, hopelessness, being threatened.
As most working parents are preoccupied with the demands of life it’s understandable the subtle nuances of a child’s stress symptoms may go unnoticed. That’s OK, don’t be hard on yourself! Tips to reduce yours and your child’s stress • Learn stress techniques to help you cope with life’s unavoidable stress • Encourage your children to communicate the stress they experience • Continually affirm your love and support to your children – this keeps them feeling safe and secure • Dedicate quality time to your children on a daily basis. During this time ensure your attention is purely on your children – switch off radio, mobile devices and TV distractions • Share at least one family meal per day together around the dining table (without gadgets). People find it hard to admit they need help, particularly psychological help, because they imagine it’s a sign of weakness. “Depression and anxiety disorders are biological illnesses. There are certain chemicals in the brain, including serotonin, noradrenalin and dopamine, which regulate mood and the way people feel. When the concentration of these chemicals becomes abnormal, people need medication to restore the balance. That is why the conditions need to be treated from a medical point of view,” he says. “Unfortunately, stigma works against people coming forward for help. However, once patients accept their condition is medical, it reassures them and they are more inclined to seek professional help.”

Sock Monkeys The ‘Sock Monkey’ project was originally developed in Canada to help bring joy and laughter to children affected by trauma. Due to the Sock Monkeys’ ever-growing popularity and increasing demand, the project is now also helping local crafters in South Africa to create a sustainable future with an ongoing source of income. Operation ‘Sock Monkey’ was introduced to an NGO in KwaZulu-Natal in 2007 by Lindsay Hodgson from Canada, through Clowns Without Borders South Africa (CWBSA). This was in direct response to people living with HIV/AIDS defaulting on their ARVs. Producing lovely and saleable crafts fosters self-esteem and provides vital income for the crafters and their families. More than 200 people are supported through this craft project. Villagers from households and those who are HIV positive are encouraged to get involved in making Sock Monkeys which help act as a healing tool when counselling children who have been abused or are in distress. Sock Monkeys are supplied to the Clowns Without Borders South Africa programme, which works with local children affected by trauma. This project is now overseen by local volunteers. The three types of finishes on the head of the Sock Monkeys are woollen hair, crochet cap or ‘afro’ style extension hair. From these raw materials the crafters create a variety of styles. Proceeds go towards supplementing the income of crafters in Ufafa Valley.

Surviving the Holidays So the holidays are upon us – days and weeks of freedom from routine, and life as a whole. In order to survive this crazy season, Mommy needs to arm herself with a plan.
Have a new routine ready to replace the old one. Write it up on the fridge so that the kids can see what this plan is. State what time they are expected to be up and when you will eat your meals: breakfast, lunch and tea times. Explain that these may change if you We need to realise that holidays are, in fact, are out, but this is the general plan. very disruptive to our children’s reality – suddenly they are able to sleep in later, eat Put up a calendar of the holiday on the fridge when they are hungry and often stay up too. Edible Dinosaur Eggs This idea was sent to us by a reader, so I just had to try it out. I made them with my son over the weekend and they turned out great! You could serve these at a dinosaur themed party, and your child can help you make them. My son was delighted when we peeled them the next morning. He wanted to know if they were going to hatch. So I said “No, we’re going to eat them!” He was horrified!
and make it uneven so they look real – big cracks and little cracks. • Soak eggs in a glass or bowl of water mixed with food colouring overnight in the fridge. We soaked each egg in a different colour. • When you wake up, peel the eggs and you have authentic looking (edible) dinosaur eggs! • One of our eggs broke when we were peeling it, so peel them carefully!
Ingredients: • Boiled eggs • Water • Food colouring Method: • The number of eggs and colours is up to you. We made three. • Boil your eggs until cool – add some salt to the water to prevent cracking. • Let the eggs cool completely. • Crack the egg shells without peeling. Don’t crack them evenly all around – try
