Editor’s Life

It’s the Middle of Winter As I write this, we are heading into the middle of winter and my family and I are about to head off on 2 consecutive camping weekends – both will be completely opposite experiences! The first weekend will be spent in Cape Vidal, where most of my time will be spent going for strolls on the beach and enjoying the warmer weather and the second weekend will be spent camping in Underberg, which apparently will be FREEZING!!

This issue is our school holiday issue and we have included some ideas of what to do with the kids over the break, plus our new ‘Local News’ feature. You will also find other interesting articles and adverts of local suppliers of services and goods, that we’re sure you’ll find useful. We have recently created a Facebook Community Group so please join the group to connect with other members. You can share tips and tricks with each other, recipes, events, just about anything really! Please check out the FB group at ‘Mum’s Mail Group PMB’. Enjoy and happy holidays! Victoria xxx GRADES 1 - 12

We have our niece visiting from the UK and even though it’s the height of summer over there, we’ve told her she needs to bring her winter woollies with her. All my local friends think we’re completely crazy to even consider camping in the Berg in the middle of winter but Andrew is very excited to get back out into the wild! He has many a plan for making potjies and bread over an open fire, cooking on the braai and goodness knows what else… At least I will get a break from cooking!

Our tickets for the 13th Annual Mum’s Mail High Tea went on sale recently and were sold out within hours. You can read more about the event in this issue and if you are keen to come to Durban for the event, but haven’t booked a ticket, please send an email to mumsmailhightea@gmail.com to be added to the waiting list.

Chest Physiotherapy for Babies and Children Winter is here and it’s a time when we see a lot of our little kiddies going down with the sniffles. Upper respiratory tract infections irritate the airways and causes mucus to be secreted. This can lead to an irritable cough and runny noses, which can result in more serious chest conditions. Babies are restless and don’t sleep well, which can become quite a stressful time for parents. Chest physiotherapy for these babies and children helps to move the mucus to the middle airways and with special techniques we assist them to cough and clear the mucus, which in turn improves lung function and breathing. This enables the antibiotics to work quickly and babies heal faster. With a clear chest and easier breathing, sleeping is no trouble! So, what are the techniques? One of the most common, cupping, is used alongside positioning of the infant depending where the most mucus is trapped. Cupping is gentle but firm patting of the chest wall with a cupped hand. This is not painful to the child but causes a vibration within the chest which helps the mucus to slide along to be easily coughed out. Nebulisation can be used before the start of treatment to help further loosen the mucus and open the airways. Our nebuliser is very quiet, quick and gets deep into the lung, which is child friendly and efficient.

Mental Health Awareness Month July is Mental Health Awareness month. A large portion of the South African population suffers from mental illnesses, and the majority of them won’t receive treatment. Mental illnesses are real and have a significant negative social and economic impact on South African society. The aim of Mental Health Awareness Month is to educate the public about the realities of mental health conditions and to reduce stigma around seeking support or identifying as a person with a mental health concern. Akeso Clinics Pietermaritzburg can help you change the direction of your life. They offer specialist inpatient and outpatient treatment for a range of psychiatric illnesses through its General Psychiatry and Dual Diagnosis/ Addiction Units, including anxiety and depression, substance abuse and addiction, eating disorders, ageing disorders, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Established in 2011, the clinic aims to provide a safe and comfortable environment where patients can recover and regain their sense of security and self, under the expert care of specialists in both physical and mental health. Akeso Pietermaritzburg prides itself on treating both patients and their loved ones with dignity and respect, delivering clinical excellence in world-class facilities with the ultimate aim of helping patients and their loved ones not only recover, but also understand their illness, and thereby change the direction of their lives. All Akeso clinics are staffed by a wide range of medical professionals, including psychiatrists, psychologists, occupational therapists, social workers, pharmacists and nurses, all of whom are dedicated to providing the best possible patient care, to ensure the best possible outcome for patients and their loved ones.

Empower your Children to Deal with a Crisis Agnieszka Gryn, General Manager at Fidelity ADT’s Inland region, says as parents it is our responsibility to not only educate our children about safety, but to also give them the necessary tools to deal with a crisis. “The reality is that our children may witness a crime despite our best efforts to keep them protected,” Gryn says. “While we don’t want our children to live in fear, we do need to have frank conversations about what to do in a crises situation.”

They should never try and engage in conversation. They should speak only if spoken to and then try to keep their answers short and to the point. Encourage your children to try and get a good look at the criminal and memorise their physical details and clothing, as well as the vehicle they’re in. Listen for any names or other details that might help identify them later.

Quite simply, the same rules that apply to Remind your children to try and remain calm adults need to be instilled in children. and quiet if not threatened so the criminal can get what he or she wants and move off. Easy Party Treats Kebabs seem to be all the rage at the moment, and they are SO easy to make. Here are some fun ideas for your child’s next birthday party! Dino Kebabs Ingredients: Marshmallows, wooden skewers, white chocolate, dinosaur sprinkles. Push a skewer through 3 marshmallows, keeping them close together. Melt the chocolate in the microwave, stirring often. Dip the marshmallows into the melted chocolate, holding the kebab upside down over the bowl to allow most of the chocolate to drip down. Before the chocolate sets pour the sprinkles over the dinosaurs. Tip: instead of dinosaurs, use any other shape to match your theme.

Rainbow Kebabs Ingredients: Marshmallows, wooden skewers, white chocolate, rainbow vermicelli. Push a skewer through 3 marshmallows, keeping them close together. Melt the chocolate in the microwave, stirring often. Pour the rainbow vermicelli onto a plate. Dip the marshmallows completely in the melted chocolate, holding the kebab upside down. Before the chocolate sets, roll the kebab in the vermicelli until it is well coated. Leave to set. Marbled Kebabs Ingredients: Marshmallows, wooden skewers, milk chocolate. Push a skewer diagonally through 3 or 4 marshmallows. Melt the chocolate in the microwave, stirring often. Using a fork, drip melted chocolate over the marshmallows to make marble-like streaks. Leave to set. Tip: use both white and milk chocolate for a rainbow effect. Source: Easy Party Treats for Children by Janette Mocke.

KidsBookClub Reviews Baby’s First Animals This cute board picture book aimed at toddlers is bright and full of realistic animal pictures, with exciting pull tabs on the side to capture your toddler’s attention. It’s a beautiful way to teach animal names, sounds and family groups. The board book is sturdy enough to ensure many hours of page turning and tab pulling. It’s perfect for keeping my bear cub busy. This book was entertaining and educational and I love the bright backgrounds and realistic animals. Bear especially loved being able to pull out the sturdy card lever and discover the hidden animal on each side. I keep this book in the car to entertain bear on long drives.
