The Proverbial Can of Worms I recently gained at least 5kg eating lots of humble pie. You may have received a bulk generated email from me (or from one of my lovely Mum’s Mail ladies) with the subject line “Are you ignoring me…” (if you responded to the first request to update your details with us, you will not have received the reminder email). Now, while several people thought this was indeed a quirky and amusing way of heading an email which made them want to read it/take note and respond, others did not and were offended by my rudeness (which ranged from mild to severe offence and irritation). I have since done some research and discovered that this is actually a medical condition called SOHF (Sense Of Humour Failure).

The real purpose of the email was to clean up our database, by simply asking you to click and update your details OR unsubscribe from our database if you no longer want to/ need to hear from us. I realise, in hindsight, that my choice of subject line was indeed not everyone’s cup of tea, and for that reason, I apologise unreservedly. I do also promise to be a lot more circumspect when selecting subject lines in the future. In fact, an entire department of “subject line authorisers” has been implemented as a result of my faux pas. Let this be a lesson to us all, that you’re never quite as funny to everyone else as you think you are!

Meet the Cover Stars Trevor Ngcobo is a born and bred Pietermaritzburg father of three. He is a new vehicle sales executive for Mercedes-Benz Garden City Motors in Pietermaritzburg.

Caring, professional and sensitive.

Trevor said being a father is a challenge, especially being a young parent with three kids. “But that being said, it’s also a blessing. There is nothing I’m more passionate about than my kids… oh and my wife…!” he joked. “Having kids has really made me grow up and look at life in a different light. The most amazing part of being a father is when I return home after a long day’s work and the kids see me walk through the door and they scream “daddy’s home” – I don’t think that can ever get old!”

For Trevor, the biggest challenge with being a father is balancing work and family time. “There is pressure to provide your kids with the best and we sometimes lose ourselves in the rat-race and forget that the kids also need time with you.”

“THE inCHAngA CHOO CHOO STEAM TRAin”

His advice to young or new fathers is this; “Spending quality time is not going to Spur or McDonalds with the kids. Sometimes parents get lost in what truly matters. Kids just want you around, sitting on the couch and watching a movie, kicking a ball in the back yard – these are what memories are made of and memories should be made of quality moments like these.”

Child Kinetics Child Kinetics is an exciting new field in child development, focusing on the motor development of children. Addressing child development with Child Kinetics is a twopronged approach: 1. Preventative: An age specific programme, designed to ensure optimal stimulation to avoid developmental shortfalls. 2. Corrective: An age appropriate assessment is used to determine the cause of a child’s shortfall. A physical intervention is then implemented to resolve the problem and its cause. Motor development refers to a child’s ability to move, and is divided into two main parts: 1. Fine motor: small intricate movements using small muscles. 2. Gross motor: large movements using large muscles. ResearchdoneatPotchefstroomUniversityindicatesthattheincidenceofmotordevelopment shortfalls in children younger than 15 is between 25% and 30% and rising. Developmental shortfalls present in different ways, sometimes hidden by compensatory mechanisms, but can still seriously impact on a child’s development. Motor development shortfalls will impact on their performance at school and the sports field if not addressed. Tell-tale signs are: • Fidgeting/struggling to sit still • Poor concentration/inability to follow instructions • Lethargy/slouching • Poor hand-eye co-ordination • Clumsiness • Difficulty reading/ problem solving • Difficulty reaching across body • Untidy handwriting/difficulty writing • Unco-ordinated arm-swing when walking • Difficulty crawling/walking. Child Kinetics focuses on preventing developmental shortfalls and helping children who have shortfalls in their motor development. Shortfalls that are identified early are easier to resolve and have less of an impact on a child’s future development and performance. She is passionate about music and her dream is to be famous and have her own record label. At the recent Talent Africa Nationals competition she earned a place in the SA team to compete in New York in July. Friends of the family are appealing for donations to help fulfil Keely’s dream of going to New York. If you would like to help, contact thecrockers@telkomsa.net. • Howick Hospice is a non-profit organisation committed to caring for the terminally ill through home-based care, education and training, social welfare and bereavement support. Hospice relies on support and financial contributions from the general public, corporate sector, and philanthropic donors. I Care is a nonprofit Christian organisation that creates meaningful and sustainable solutions for these street children through awareness programmes, rehabilitation, shelters and skills/job creation and finally producing effective members of society. The ABC of Stress The ABC of Stress by Leon Grové (clinical psychologist) is primarily a quick read to get your thoughts rolling and to stimulate you to take a look at your own life and how you are dealing with stress. Stress is not there to be avoided at all costs. Each of us will or has experienced stress at some time in our lives. Stress can, however, be controlled. Learning how to deal with stress can be made that much easier if you take the letters of the alphabet and work through them, asking yourself if you are dealing with the particular letter in a positive or negative manner. More often than not, it is not the stressful event that causes the trouble, but our response to it. The purpose of this book is an attempt to share the information and experiences Leon has encountered in his 33 years as a clinical psychologist and management consultant. The activities and stress management skills mentioned in this booklet are done assuming that you will be working on the advice by yourself. Managing your stress levels is not just something that is going to happen but is something that has to be practiced and needs to be made part of your everyday life. Leon has assisted many managers and clients to deal with stress and change by using one or more techniques mentioned in this book. Contact: Leon Grové, Clinical Psychologist, 082 4435 696, 033 – 342 0027, email mwlevgro@mweb.co.za or visit www.levgro.co.za.

All about Body Awareness Body awareness is an important developmental measure in early childhood. It is something we usually take for granted, yet it plays the most fundamental role in our ability to learn. It is a term we often hear, and although we know it’s an important area of child development, it’s not always understood! So, what exactly is body awareness and how does one promote it? Body awareness is about understanding your body, and body parts, and how they are in relation to each other and the space around you. It’s the “knowing” what your body is doing without having to rely on your eyes to tell you.

Are you or your child not coping?

Our senses help promote body awareness Good body awareness requires our senses to work as a team. The contribution of our movement receptors and the visual and tactile senses are most important. Johannesburg-based occupational therapist and Clamber Club teacher, Gabbi Katzenellenbogen, explains that body awareness develops from our sensory systems; the vestibular (movement), proprioceptive (body position) and tactile systems. “Children need to know what their bodies are doing in order to learn and interact with the environment. Body awareness impacts learning and planning of movements,” says Katzenellenbogen. “If we do not know what our bodies are doing in space then it can impact on our relationship and interaction with things around us.”

How does body awareness develop? Body awareness is developed through movement. Movement experiences help to build neural memories about all the parts of our bodies. Through body awareness we are able to sense and understand information about the nature of gravity, the hardness of some things, the softness of others, the flexibility of others etc.
