Cloth Nappies in the Year 2015
People think of cloth nappies as the white towelling squares that everyone used last century. However, modern cloth nappies have come a long way since then and interest is growing in reusable modern cloth nappies. Parents’ reasons for using cloth nappies include cost savings, concern about chemicals, environmental concerns, and the cuteness overload. Here are the basics of ‘cloth nappying’. Babies use six to eight nappies a day, therefore you would need about 18 to 24 nappies to cloth nappy one baby full time, washing nappies every second day. Flourishing In Emotional Intelligence Talking about emotions is a challenge and discomfort for many people. The problem is that in denying emotions exist, we lose the opportunity to learn from them. The concept of emotional intelligence (EQ) is defined as the ability to monitors one’s own and other people’s emotions, to discriminate and label them appropriately and to use emotional information to guide thinking and behaviour. One just has to look around, read the newspaper, watch the news or see the South African statistics to see that as South Africans we are emotionally unintelligent. The increase in aggressive behaviour among even our youngest children, the devastating impact of media saturation, the absence of relaxed family time, the abandonment of traditional values of honesty and effort and the loss of empathy and increased narcissist attitudes make it imperative to implement EQ skills into homes and schools. Recent data from Daniel Goldman’s ‘Why EQ can matter more than IQ’ discusses that having emotionally intelligent parents is in itself an enormous benefit to children. Parents who have the basics of EQ recognise, manage and harness feelings that arise in their relationships. Goldman studies reveal that EQ adept parents raise children who: • Get on better with their siblings • Are affectionate • Experience less tension • Handle their own emotions • Are able to self soothe • Get upset less • Are biologically relaxed • Have better health • Are socially advantaged • Teachers rate these children as having few behavioural problems and cognitively advantaged.
