Healthy Life/Beautiful Life Ozone Hydrotherapy You can survive weeks without food, days without water, but only minutes without oxygen! Flooding the body with supercharged oxygen is not a new approach to healing - ozone (a tri-molecule of oxygen) was first used in 1857 in the medical field. From a medical aspect, ozone destroys or deactivates viruses, bacteria, fungi and protozoa. It breaks up heavy metals such as mercury, lead, cadmium and aluminium, all of which are detoxed through the hydrotherapy process. Ozone also improves and accelerates wound healing (there are over 100 ailments that can be treated using ozone therapy). It also boosts energy significantly and counteracts stress. This is all achieved without harming any healthy cells or tissue. Ozone can be introduced into the body in many ways but Ozone Steam Therapy, also known as Ozone Hydrotherapy, is favoured as the least invasive and most enjoyable form of ozone therapy. The client is seated in a chamber with only the head exposed. The body is then fully surrounded by warm steam which causes the pores to open. The ozone then enters through the skin and toxins are safely excreted back out through the skin during perspiration. This steam method also induces a “false fever” tricking the body into thinking it is ill and the immune system kicks in to start healing processes within the body.

Healthy Life/Beautiful Life Esse Organic Skincare
Cool Winds
“Going Green” is not just about solar panels and electric cars. “Going Green” can affect nearly every aspect of our lives including skincare. Esse Organic Skincare, based in Richmond, KZN, is a range of facial products that helps users “Go Green”. Their products are made completely with ingredients of natural origin and the actual process of making the products is also green-friendly. For instance, the containers are made from recycled glass and the raw materials are sourced locally. I tried out the Esse Cream Cleanser and the Esse Deep Moisturiser. I’m a bit fussy when it comes to facial skincare but was very pleased to find how well the products agreed with my skin. Although fussy I’m also lazy, so was glad to see that the cleanser also removes eye make-up (bonus – I get to cut out a step!). Patting on the cleanser with just a little water on my hands made a pleasant, easy-spreading “paste” and brought out the gentle mint flavour. It had no drying effect on my skin whatsoever, due to the Baobab oil within. The Deep Moisturiser is wonderful. I just tapped it on (no vigorous rubbing needed) and was left with a unique silky-withoutbeing-oily feeling. Ylang ylang and honeybush are some of the ingredients used in this product. I think the 50ml pot will last a long time, making the cost of R290 well worth it (the 100ml Cream Cleanser costs R130.75, the 200ml R190.12).

Craig Brown currently owns and manages Oasis Water in Pietermaritzburg. This husband, and father to two daughters, Chelsea (15) and Zoe (12), didn’t however start his working life in the water industry or in Pietermaritzburg. Craig used to be an airline pilot based in Luxembourg. An accident which damaged his hearing changed all that resulting in him losing his aviation medical. “I was a Training Captain for an overseas airline flying 747s,” said Craig. “I fell down a ladder in the cargo hold, hit the back of my head on my way down and fractured my skull. The accident affected my hearing and I was disqualified from flying.” Lots of time with medical professionals ensued and Craig developed an interest in healthy eating, healthy drinking and a healthy lifestyle. Because of the many countries and hotels he had visited during his flying days, Craig also had a good background knowledge in bottled water. “I realised that many locals in different parts of the world had stopped drinking tap water (for health reasons) so bottled water looked like a good industry to be in.”

After research, Craig decided on Oasis Water because of their size (they have 150 branches countrywide) and professional approach. He attended a training course in Pretoria taught by very knowledgeable teachers and bought and opened his own franchise in Pietermaritzburg. That was two years ago. Craig is now working on automating the bottling process at his factory to increase production. Contact: Craig Brown, Oasis Water, 033 – 345 9508.

Tiny Life Working and Breastfeeding Many new mothers return to work outside the home while their babies are still very young, and feel that they have to stop breastfeeding. This is not necessary. Formula-fed babies get sick on average 12 to 14 times in their first year, which is more than once a month! Breastfed babies get sick maybe once or twice in the first year so you will not need to take off work as often to care for a sick baby. This should motivate your boss to let you take short breaks to express each day (don’t colleagues take frequent smoke-breaks?). It will also keep your breasts from becoming engorged. Practically: Breastfeed all feeds that you are with your baby. Express all feeds that you are not, to stimulate your milk supply. These will also be your baby’s feeds while you are apart. Weekends and evenings: Enjoy the closeness of nursing your baby but express after feeds. Keep and add up all those 5 - 20mls in the bottom back of the fridge for Monday (expressed milk can last for about three days in the fridge if you’re very clean and sterile). On work days, wake up half an hour earlier and breastfeed, then get yourself and baby ready for the day. Just before you leave your baby, breastfeed again. Then express all missed feeds (tea time, lunch time, tea time) and keep this for the next day. One to two hours before being reunited with your baby, ask the carer not to give baby anything so that you and your baby can bond and breastfeed as soon as you walk in the door.
STEM CELL STORAGE AT BIRTH Your baby’s umbilical cord is filled with precious stem cells that can be harvested at birth. There are currently over 70 diseases that can be treated by the use of stem cell technology. INDUSTRY LEADERS

Young Life/Party Life How to Help Situated in Songondimani in the rural outskirts of Elandskop, the Kusile Community Centre caters for 77 children aged six and under in a little rondavel. They have a small kitchen and a very small room in which the babies sleep. Many of these children are from child-headed households, some are orphans, vulnerable children and some are affected by HIV and AIDS. Despite meagre resources, the Kusile Community Centre is trying to meet a burgeoning need in Elandskop by providing the children with a daily meal and education. The Thembelihle Seniors’ Club, based in the Thokozani township in the Cramond area of New Hanover, was started in 1999. The club is affiliated to PAFTA (Pietermaritzburg Association for the Aged) and has 30 members. The objective is to develop the life skills of senior citizens by doing sewing, beadwork, jewellery, mats, wooden curtains, and pillows, mostly for sale in the community. The members also aim to provide themselves with nutritious meals and ensure they have a balanced diet. The Mpolweni Child and Family Welfare Society operates in 10 villages in Ward 10 in the New Hanover area of the uMshwathi Municipality looking after a population of 12,000 children and youth. Under the guidance of a social worker the Society works to enhance the wellbeing of children and youth and provides foster care, re-unification services, counselling, protection from exploitation, temporary placement and legal protection. As a result of a hands-on volunteer programmes, clinical services other than care are now possible in homes as well as referrals to Health Care Centres. For more info on all the above, please contact the Pietermaritzburg Community Chest, director@communitychest.org.za, 033 - 394 1031, 072 768 5485.

• Start early, even if it is small! The bigJenni gest mistake most people make is not Underwood to start investing because they feel that 033 - 343 4086 what they can invest is too small. Not 083 395 1321 true! Even R50 a month invested wisely www.braintrainedu.co.za WILL make a difference eventually. • Invest in equities. Investing for children’s education is a long-term strategy. Cash savings alone are not going to do it, and in fact the younger your children are the greater the argument to be in equities. Equities or shares listed on the stock exchange are the only investment really likely to grow the buying power of your money with any degree of significance. If this were not the case then you would be better off saving money in your home loan until you needed it.

• Save costs. Most people believe that when investing in equities they need to find the best performing fund. Frankly paying the lower annual costs is far more important.
