FROM THE EDITOR My husband’s turning 40 this month, so that’s a good excuse for a party, but the 29th of November will also be the 20th anniversary of my Mom’s death. She taught me that life is short, so don’t wait for others to be ready in order for you to realise your own dreams. Over the years I have been taught some very important (and often humbling) life lessons, and I am grateful to the following people for these lessons: • Nadine Valle, a school friend, who taught me that something good can come from the tragic death of a child: www.kidswithcancer.co.za. • Steph Berry, fundraiser for The Sunflower Fund, who gave me permission to say “NO”. • Marc Davis, fundraiser for The KZN Society for the Blind before his death, who showed me that with a wicked sense of humour you can cope with any curve balls (he was blinded in an accident, and then developed diabetes which resulted in both his legs being amputated). • Cindy Norcott, a dynamic businesswoman and founder of The Robin Hood Foundation, who taught me to write a “To NOT Do” list. • Ross Leah, my long-suffering and tolerant husband, who reminds me to never go to sleep without resolving an argument. • The Woods, special family friends, who never miss their weekly “family night”, as family means everything to them. • Karen Brokensha, an events and marketing consultant, who showed me that with passion and purpose, anything is achievable. • Monique Metzler, the founder of Women’s Lifestyle World and a special friend whose life was cut short by cancer, and whose memory serves as a constant reminder that your health is everything.

HEALTH, FASHION & BEAUTY Cancer
Did you know:
CANCER
Cancer is on the increase and almost everyone knows someone who has been diagnosed with cancer. This is probably due to changes in our diet and lifestyles, and our bodies simply don’t recognise many of the “foods” and chemicals they are exposed to on a grand scale compared to what the human body was created for. This causes a deficit in the body’s reserves to be able to deal with illness/ disease of all kinds, including cancer!

Why you should give the “Kiss of Life”...
Cancer cells are anaerobic – they love it when there is a lack of oxygen in and around the body’s cells. One way to tell whether there is enough oxygen at cellular level is to simply test the PH of the saliva or preferably urine.
• Approximately 35 people die from heart attacks every day in our country • 75% of all cardiac arrests happen in people’s homes • Approximately 10 children die every day in South Africa and 1000s are injured • CPR for children, if started early, is often lifesaving, as they collapse due to breathing problems • The brain can only survive for about 5 minutes without oxygen
CPR SAVES LIVES! • Basic Childcare Course • “Save-a-Child” First Aid Course • Cooking and Nutrition For Kids • Developmental Stimulation Course • American Heart Association Heartsaver First Aid Course • We also do placements for Au Pairs Educare is registered with the South African Resuscitation Council & runs American Heart Association approved courses
Did you know that cancer cells become dormant at a PH of 7.5 and actually commit suicide at 8.5? It stands to reason then that becoming alkaline should be the goal of anyone wanting to be healthy, especially with cancer! A good PH test kit measures 5.0 to 9.0.

Do we know what’s in that packet of chips, how the oils clog up livers, leading to problems like gallstones, acidity etc? There are natural, healthy alternatives to junk snacks! HEALTH, FASHION & BEAUTY World Diabetes Day Diabetes is a chronic disease that occurs when the body does not produce enough insulin. This is a hormone that enables the cells in the body to take in glucose from the blood and use it for energy. Failure to produce insulin results in raised sugar levels, which are associated with long-term damage to the body and failure of other organs and tissues. World Diabetes Day is celebrated on 14 November, to raise awareness of diabetes, which is one of the world’s leading killers, after cancer. The WHO has estimated that more than 220 million people worldwide have diabetes. This global initiative is also aimed at celebrating the birthday of Frederick Banting who, along with Chris Bester, discovered insulin in 1922, a medical breakthrough as well as a life-saving treatment for diabetics. The International Diabetes Federation and the WHO introduced it in 1991 as a form of treatment in response to the alarming increase in diabetes around the world. In an attempt to educate the public on the prevention of diabetes, people are advised to attend regular screenings. From the millions of people with diabetes, substantial percentages are unaware that they have it, which leads to late detection of the disease in its advanced stages. Source: Okuhle Tamella, Forest Hills High School, Mum’s Mail Work Experience. Global Diabetes Walk: 6 November, 8am, Suncoast Casino, 5km. Registration takes place from 6am. There will be a Wellness Expo at the same venue until 3pm. Entry fee for the walk is R30 per person. Pre-event registration takes place 29 October, 9am to 6pm, and 5 November, 1pm to 6pm. PREGNANCY & BABIES Preparing Your Child for School Swimming Swimming is compulsory for all learners from Grade 1 upwards so why not enrol your young child in swim lessons with a qualified, registered and accredited swim teacher? If your child is water safe, and perhaps even proficient in the swimming pool, you will notice your child’s self-esteem and confidence improving considerably. Swimming is extremely good for gross motor skills and co-ordination. It is also strongly recommended to help improve asthma and general health.

Odette Randelhoff, local swim teacher and KZN representative on the South African Swim Teachers’ Technical Committee, encourages learning to swim in a safe but fun environment. She adds that her passion is to encourage and nurture a love for swimming. “Children need to have ‘playtime’ in the water,” she says, “but always being aware of the safety aspects of swimming pools, i.e. no running around the pool, no jumping in, no holding on others etc. is important.”
Course includes: • Basic Childcare • First Aid, CPR and Choking • HIV and AIDS Awareness • Stimulation and Play • New Courses: • Basic Housekeeping • Home Based Care for the Elderly

Swimming is a first term activity with most schools holding galas for Grade 1 learners. Imagine how proud your child will be when they can take part in the swimming events in the school gala and not in novelty/walking events! For children in Grade 3 to Grade 7, being part of the school swim team is a great honour. Enrolling your child in swimming lessons prior to Grade 1 will be one of the best decisions and financial sacrifices you can make. It is never too late to learn. So even for those older children, do not hesitate to get them into swimming!

Dyslexia Dyslexia is a learning disability that is often misdiagnosed. It is characterised by language problems specifically known as expressive or receptive language. These problems may become evident either through the reading, writing, spelling or spoken language of the individual. People diagnosed as dyslexic are often gifted but learn in a different way to most children or adults. The structure and the working of the brain are different to those who are not dyslexic. We will often see dyslexics who are artistic and are able to work in 3D and therefore are excellent in the fields of art, engineering, mechanics, music, graphics and even drama. These are all areas where spatial and visual ability together with motor integration are all important. If you suspect that your child is dyslexic they may experience difficulty with the following (though no dyslexic has all the symptoms):

Many people are never diagnosed correctly. Dyslexia is not a learning difficulty that can be diagnosed by a class teacher but must be assessed by a psychologist who can assess using the correct diagnostic tools to make a correct assessment. WHAT TO DO/WHERE TO STAY Space Party In September, astronaut Dr Ellen Baker visited the MTN ScienCentre at Gateway Theatre of Shopping. Much to the delight of the gathered children, Dr Baker gave a talk, a presentation and a Q & A session. “[We] hope that through meeting an astronaut, learners will be encouraged to dream...,” said Candice Potgieter, General Manager at the ScienCentre. Now while you may not be able to invite a real-life astronaut to your child’s next birthday party, here are a few ideas for an out-of-this-world occasion!
