Meet the Cover Stars Our lovely cover stars this month are the Fawell family from Pietermaritzburg – Henk and Melissa Fawell with their children Quinn and Mila. Henk is an Afrikaans Teacher at St Charles College and Melissa is a PA at Safire Insurance. They both love their jobs! Mila is 5 and is a little princess who loves everything pretty. She’s a real little helper, and always insists on learning exactly how things work. She loves trying to do things for herself and just overflows with affection and love for the world around her (especially for her dad). Her little brother Quinn (3) loves anything with wheels and if you put a ball in his hands he’s over the moon. Quinn is an absolute mommy’s boy! As siblings do, Mila and Quinn have a love-hate relationship but always have each other’s backs. They both love books as well as cartoons. Both Grannies and Grandpas also play a huge role in their lives. “We love going to the dam as Dad is an avid fisherman. We often go to

Chateau Gateaux Launches New Fabric Shopping Bags When Chateau Gateaux launched their new environmentally friendly cake boxes, they made a commitment to look at other environmentally friendly alternatives they could use, without compromising on quality. They started with simple changes, like replacing all plastic straws with cardboard ones, and replacing their paper vouchers with a new digital app. Their take away cutlery is no longer plastic, but rather, bamboo. All branded still and sparkling water bottles now come in beautiful re-usable or recyclable glass bottles. Environmental awareness is an ongoing project within the company, and the latest improvement is replacing their plastic packets with a reusable fabric bag. The challenge was to find a bag big enough to fit all their cake sizes, and they also wanted to use a local manufacturer. Chateau Gateaux have managed to meet this challenge and have recently launched their new fabric bags – they are locally made in Durban, and are big enough to fit not one but THREE of their 24cm cakes! These bags cost R20 each, and for each bag sold Chateau Gateaux will donate R1 to The Sunflower Fund – proving once again that Chateau Gateaux is committed to reducing their footprint on earth and supporting local causes. The new fabric bags have been at all Chateau Gateaux stores for a number of weeks now and they can’t re-stock them fast enough! Once the last plastic bag has left the stores, there will be no more plastic bags leaving any Chateau Gateaux Patisserie! The new bags are very strong, cutting out the need to insert a plastic base at the bottom of the bag – which means the bags can also fold up into a very small size for shoppers’ convenience. South African Parents Work Together to Raise Awareness on Car Seat Safety #CarSeatFullStop is a national car seat awareness initiative that launched in July 2016. Local mom, Mandy Lee Miller, who is a blogger and entrepreneur, began researching and learning more on car seat safety and it grew from there. The #CarSeatFullStop goal is to create and maintain high levels of awareness of the critical importance of child safety seats in every child under the age of 12. They offer well researched, educated, responsible guidance for South African families to keep their little ones safe on our roads.

Taking time out when you are a parent is selfish... Or is it? As parents we often tell ourselves that our own needs are not important and our children come first – but with the significant increase in the prevalence of people struggling with mental illness, we need to start taking our emotional needs as seriously as we take our physical needs.

Our mental health is vital to us as parents because without it we can’t be the quality parents we want to be. Taking time out to fill up our emotional energy and maintain our mental health is the furthest thing from being selfish. In fact it is one of the most loving things we can do for our families.
