service. LEHHC was the only private hospital in KZN to have been selected to take part in a nationally driven stroke simulation (dummy patient run) project coordinated by Angels South Africa in conjunction with Boehringer Ingelheim Global Office and Angels Europe. The entire simulation was recorded on a Go-Pro camera, which was later evaluated. According to feedback received from Angels Consultants, this simulation was a huge success, with the ‘door to needle’ time being 30 minutes and 10 seconds. Niresh Bechan said; “Our stroke teams are well trained and experienced with dealing with stroke emergencies. Although the simulation was almost half the expected ‘door to needle’ time of 60 minutes, we have on record the ‘door to needle’ time of 16 minutes in respect of an actual case.”

Lenmed Ethekwini Hospital and Heart Centre is the only hospital in KZN to offer paediatric cardiac surgery, and have a 13-member team of 10 paediatric subdisciplines at one private hospital. They also have a Heart, Stroke and Renal Dialysis Centre of Excellence, offering a holistic range of medical disciplines with advanced medical technology and equipment, For more info on LEHHC and its worldcomplimented by an experienced team class medical offerings, email GM, Niresh of specialists, nursing staff and support Bechan on nbechan@ehhc.co.za, call services - including a 24 hour emergency 031 - 581 2400 or visit www.ehhc.co.za

Car Seats – When do you Move to the Next Seat Up? Car seats are designed to keep your child safe during a crash. The problem is that what is best, safest and affordable is not always clear.

NOW SHOWING The Lego Ninjago Movie 3D

So, what do you do? You let the car seat talk to you. The car seat has an “ID” attached to it in the form of an orange sticker. On this sticker will be all the information you require to assist in choosing the correct seat and it must be on the seat for it to be considered legal and certified. It is VERY IMPORTANT to use your car seat until your child reaches the upper weight, height or age limit for that seat. Car seats are designed to keep your child safe during a specific developmental stage and moving up to the next seat too early will compromise their safety. By law, all car seats must have installation guides on them as well. Blue always indicates rear facing installation and will tell you how long you can rear face in that specific seat. This might be up to 9, 13, 18 or even 25kg. That car seat has been designed and tested safe for that weight range. Use the seat in the rear-facing position up to the upper limit and only then do you switch to forward facing.

Breast Cancer Awareness

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and The Pink Drive has some important info to share. Their mission is to spread the message that early detection saves lives.

down to your abdominal wall and from your breast bone to mid-way through your side. • Also check if there is a discharge from the nipple. To do this, gently squeeze the nipple to see if any fluid comes through. The only time there should be something coming out of the nipple is when you are breast feeding. If the fluid is yellow or green it shows infection. If it is clear or blood stained go straight to the doctor for a check-up. What to look for • A lump in the breast or arm pit • Increase in size of one breast • Swelling of glands in armpit • Enlargement of one arm • Dimpling of the skin • Dimpling of or changes to the nipple • Discharge from the nipple • Lowering of one breast or nipple • Orange peel appearance to the skin • Retraction of one or both nipples • Dry skin (eczema) of the nipple

Self-Examinations It is important to do monthly selfexaminations as this can lead to early detection of irregularities. How to do a Self-Examination • Stand in front of the mirror and look at your breasts. Lift your arms above your head as though trying to reach the ceiling and look at your breasts in a stretched position. • Check to see that there are no obvious changes between the two sides: no nipple changes or visible lumps. • Now feel your breasts. Use the flat surface of your fingers. • Always keep your hand flat on your breast. • Apply cream, shower gel, soap or oil to your breasts before starting to feel. This will help your hand glide easily over your skin For more info visit www.pinkdrive.co.za. and make it easier to feel for any lumps. • Put one hand on your head. The free hand DO YOU SUFFER FROM will check the opposite breast. • Start feeling in the arm pit. • Now move in the figure of a six and around the entire breast, until you reach the nipple. TALK TO A SURVIVOR! • Now go back to the arm pit, moving from WE ARE HERE AS A top to bottom of the breast, covering the SUPPORT FOR YOU whole area once again. REACH FOR RECOVERY • Last one now, move from the arm pit in BREAST CANCER a side to side direction, again covering the SUPPORT GROUP whole breast. • The breast starts from the collar bone,

Healthy Life

What your Sugar Cravings might Really Mean For many people, the battle with sugar can be particularly ferocious. Cravings tend to crop up when there’s a sense of depletion. However, if you can pinpoint what you lack, it’s easier to make healthier choices instead of going for something sugar-coated. Here are a few possibilities for what may be driving those sweet cravings: Magnesium deficiency For many people, a sugar craving in the form of chocolate could signal a lack of magnesium. While the cacao in chocolate is a rich source of magnesium, the sugar in chocolate could turn frequent consumption into a potential problem since it causes insulin spikes and other issues. Instead of chocolate, reach for non-sugar magnesium sources like nuts, seeds, beans and dark leafy greens. Imbalanced gut bacteria Sugar cravings can sometimes be the result of an imbalance in your gut health. Eating sugary junk food makes the problem worse. By bringing in foods that promote healthier bacteria, particularly options with high amounts of probiotics like low-sugar yogurt and other fermented foods, the good bacteria can replace the saboteurs. Not enough rest Consider adding more non-snoozing time into your day instead of seeing bedtime as your only opportunity to get some stress relief. Lack of adequate rest can make your body feel depleted in many ways, including nutritionally. This can kick off a need for a “boost” that might come in the form of sugar. Integrate short rest periods into every day, especially at times when sugar cravings are strong. Instead of that sugary snack, try going for a 15-minute walk outside.
