The Company: Chocolates for Chocoholics began selling quality chocolates and gifts in the UK in 1986. We are now a multi million pound business with the great majority of our sales being made through self employed Distributors. They sell our products directly to consumers via Chocolate Parties or through a Chocoholics brochure. We do not supply the retail trade and the great majority of our products are designed and produced in-house. Our range includes items for Christmas, Easter and we also have an all-year-round collection of boxes for Celebrations like weddings, birthdays anniversaries or corporate use. Our company ethos is based on the fact that we want to offer consumers excellent quality products in original designs at reasonable prices. Our Distributor’s contribution is to offer a high quality, local delivery service.

The Chocoholics Distributor If you were to ask any of our existing Distributors to describe their role they would probably tell you it is like working full time for part of the year. The demand for chocolate is always much higher at Christmas and Easter and our Distributors respond to this by putting in a lot more hours in the September to Easter periods. Their income during these months can often be substantial and this makes it easier for them to take an extended break over the summer. This work pattern can be ideal for a mum as it fits in very well around school holidays. The product range has been specially designed to appeal to families and with prices starting at less than 20p it is not hard to find customers or party hostesses.

Benefits: The main benefits to anyone considering this opportunity are: • • • • •

It offers flexible working hours The product is easy to sell For anyone who is prepared to work the profits can be good It is very sociable and a great way to make lots of friends We maximise your opportunities by limiting the number of Distributors in each area.

Requirements: • • • • •

You need to be able to attend product presentations at our offices in Berkshire prior to the start of each of our seasons. You need to be able to drive and have your own transport. Your Display kit and deliveries can be bulky so we recommend you have adequate space to store them. Lifting and carrying lots of boxes can be hard work so you need to be fit and free of back problems. You need to be enthusiastic and possess a desire to be successful.

Our sessions are fun and encourage all children to be active in structured classes which benefit their health. Franchising

The F… Word Franchising, that is. In the current difficult business climate, franchising may be a way to run your own business and generate an income, but with more support and less risk than if you decided to go it alone. But what is franchising exactly, and how does it work? A franchise is defined as "an agreement by which a business company gives someone the right to market its products in an area; [or]… the area concerned". What this means is that someone with an established business may offer you the right to trade under their business name and brand in a particular area. The franchisor is the person selling the right and the franchisee is the prospective purchaser, i.e. you. The area in which you are given a licence to trade is known as your territory. A territory can be exclusive or non-exclusive and could be a single postcode to a town, city or even county. Exclusive territories mean no other franchisees are permitted to sell in your area, which can be a key advantage. Make sure you know exactly where your territory starts and finishes as you may have a competitor set up shop just down the road. Franchisors will often charge a one-off start up fee, which can range from a small initial investment up to £tens of thousands. Some franchisors will require a percentage of turnover (sales, rather than profits) or may instead charge an annual licence fee. Annual fees may pay towards continual development of the brand, the services and products that the franchisor provides. The royalty fee is also often used for ongoing training of the franchisee and their staff. There may be other fees associated with a franchise, such as advertising along with the requirement to purchase specialised equipment and all of your supplies from the franchisor. However the deal is structured, you need to make sure you are fully aware of all the costs so that you can work the details into your business plan.

A franchise business does offer a range of benefits, although the exact details will vary with each business. Typical help provided to franchisees includes:

• • • • • •

a recognised name and brand centralised marketing and public relations centrally produced products and catalogues advertising training and support discounted 'group' costs, such as insurance, accountancy

Above all, remember that, no matter how much help you get, a franchise is your business, and the success of it will depend on you and your hard work. But that doesn't mean franchising is a bad f… word, your business can be fun, flexible, financially rewarding and fulfilling. 13

Franchising

top tips: Claire Bennett, Managing Director of Music Bugs, offers her top 5 points to consider:

Look for a franchise that will allow the business to grow as your family grows. You should expect a large and exclusive territory to protect your own financial investment but with enough flexibility from the franchisor to allow you to start off small and to gradually build the business up over a period of time.

Be very wary of the financial forecasts portrayed by some franchisors as these are often overly optimistic and don’t paint

the entire picture. Ask for financial forecasts that reflect potential profit net of outgoings, royalty fees and tax. Ask the franchisor to show you the annual accounts of existing franchisees. Talk to as many existing franchisees of the company as possible and ask specific questions about their experiences, training and level of ongoing support from the franchisor. Try to talk to new franchisees as well as the more established ones in order to get a balanced view. Find out what level of support you will get in terms of advertising and marketing your business, both at the launch stage and also on an ongoing basis. At the very least you should expect a start up pack of marketing materials such as

posters, flyers, business stationery and a basic website. However, some companies will go the extra mile and provide press releases, advertising templates and may even fund a good proportion of your local advertising as well as running an ongoing national advertising campaign. Be prepared for lots of hard work in the initial months while you get your business established and stay in constant touch with your franchisor. They really are the best people to guide you through this intensive early period so expect lots of support from them. Enjoy your new business and be very proud of what you have achieved! Learn more about this and more franchise opportunities on www.mumsclub.co.uk

Can I actually do the job? Do I want to do the job? If you have spent all of your life working as an accountant and are considering a franchise in singing to children, you must ask yourself if you are going to be able to actually do the job. If you do not feel you can, and the training and support from the franchisor does not look to be helpful in these areas you may need to look for another opportunity. Your skills & interests are the most important aspect when choosing any kind of business. By identifying your key skills and what you most like doing, you can discover the type of business that is best suited to you. A reason for many people to break away from the standard 9-5 job is to do something that they enjoy, and by choosing a franchise in an industry that requires your skills and interests you will be working in an environment that you enjoy. A franchise is a commitment for several years, so it is best to choose a field that has long term appeal. You must be willing to work hard and put 100% into the running of your franchise. Success is never easy in any industry and by putting everything into the setting up and running of your franchise you can be confident you will give your new business the very best chance of success.

Equally, if the franchise agreement covers a fixed term, you should discuss renewal of your franchise agreement with the franchisor. It is important to know whether you are permitted to automatically renew the franchise agreement at the end of each term, and how much will it cost you to do so.

Ask the right questions When thinking about buying a franchise, it is important that you ask your prospective franchisor the right questions. Smallprint franchisor Maija Pykett, offers her tips to make sure you get the right information. How many franchisees do you have? Beware the franchisor who is selling a ‘pilot’ – they are asking you to invest in being a guinea pig. The more franchisees there are the more experienced the franchisor and the greater the profile of your future business. A good franchisor will suggest you speak to existing franchisees to learn more about the business.

Are you a member of the British Franchise Association? Any reputable franchisor will be a member of the BFA, the governing body for franchising in the UK. All members are vetted against a strict code of business practice and offers reassurance and redress to franchisees.

Will my territory be exclusive? The granting of an exclusive territory means the franchisor cannot set up another franchise within your area and that you personally are rewarded for the time and effort you invest in marketing your product within that territory. If the territory is not exclusive, it means the franchisor could set your next-door neighbour up in business.

Work Description: The role of a Love Silver Agent is to advertise, arrange and attend home parties, school and wedding fairs, playgroups ,charity events ...(the list goes on) and sell Love Silver Jewellery and take the castings of the fingerprints. You then send the orders to us on a weekly basis and we then distribute them direct to the client via Royal Mail. You are self - employed with your own home business. You choose when, where and how to work.

Work/Life Balance: This business is run by a mum of 4 children who completely understands the need for home/life balance! You can choose how often you work and where you work so that it fits perfectly around family life. Many sales can be generated at the school gates or from other mums attending children's activities. Home parties and Fairs are usually in the evening or weekend and you can visit schools and playgroups during the day. You need only allocate a couple of hours for each visit. There are no sales targets you get paid for every piece you sell

Amount of Investment: The basic kit costs £95 and contains 5 pieces of the most popular pieces of jewellery, 100 leaflets with your contact details, a code for any web sales you may generate, moulding putty and kits for taking the fingerprints and a pack of administration paper work containing order forms, headed paper etc. You also get a love silver email address. You can add to this pack at any time by buying additional sample products at a heavily discounted rate. At the moment a pack containing all 15 products costs £295, although you can choose pieces individually to add to the basic starter pack.

Training and Support: The starter kit is really quite easy and includes a comprehensive manual - you should be up and running straight away. We are, however, always at the end of a phone or email to answer any questions and you are always welcome to visit us in person for more information. We currently have agents in North and South Manchester and Newark, Nottinghamshire. We are looking to recruit agents from all over the UK.

Earning Potential: You earn between 15% and 20% on every piece you sell. The average customer to date has spent £75, so if you did a home party with 6 people attending, and generated sales of £450 you could potentially earn £90 for a couple of hours work.

Experience Required: None really, but you have to be quite confident and hardworking, enjoy meeting people and be good with children. A computer is essential. If you would like to know more please contact me and I will be happy to send you more information.

Direct Sales - Party Planning

The Insider s Guide to… As for any business, the more you like and believe in the product you choose to sell, the easier your job will be. However, as direct sales, and particularly party planning can involve selling to people in their own homes, the product choice is fundamental when thinking of becoming a direct sales agent. Firstly, look for a product or service that appeals to you, and which is fairly priced. Your enthusiasm for the product will help your sales tremendously and value for money is even more important when times are tight. Do not base your product choice on higher commissions and bonuses. A fantastic product, one you would buy yourself, will mean sales will be easier to achieve. If the product is tricky to sell, with maybe a narrower appeal, even with a higher rate of commission, you will find yourself working far harder for a comparable income. Don't be misled by companies promising no sales targets to meet into thinking they offer an easy way to make money. In this type of business if you are not making sales, you are not making money. Set your own sales targets by thinking about what level of sales you would want to achieve, and deciding whether this is realistic based on your 25

...Direct Sales regional coverage and time commitment. Most people's first experience of party planning is an invitation to a someone's home to view or sample the latest products from a wide range. Whatever the place or product, the main objective is to create a pleasant, welcoming environment where guests are inspired to enter into the spirit of things - and to make a purchase. To succeed in direct sales, you don't necessarily need experience or qualifications but it does help to have an interest in the things you are promoting and to genuinely enjoy talking to people and selling to a live audience.

Build a business! To build up a business of reasonable size you will need a steady supply of hostesses customers who will be willing to invite their friends and acquaintances to a party event and allow you to make a sales presentation. Many network marketers start with their own circle of friends. Make a list of people you know who might be interested in your products. Then ask them what they think of the idea. Don't push them - this is a good way of losing your friends!

Often, parties take place in private homes, but community centres, sports halls and schools can also be effective venues.

There are no hard and fast rules for running a perfect party, and some things may depend on the product, venue or audience, but here are a few tips that will help you get started.

Evening parties tend to be most productive, with possible exceptions being Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The most convenient time for most people to attend is between 7.30 pm and 9.00 pm,

If you are responsible for setting up the room, arrange chairs in a circle and place refreshments and nibbles close by. If you are selling at the home of a hostess, speak to her beforehand to make sure of the details, and if she is happy to offer snacks. Always carry emergency supplies just in case.

Practice your presentation beforehand, and rehearse your timings. Remember you may speak faster when nervous. Factor in the size of your venue- if it is a large room you will need to speak louder, and if there are a large number of guests, you may need to spend longer demonstrating, and taking orders at the end.
