start up’s for

How to promote your business when you are just getting started is a challenge we all face. Marina McHutchinson shares her tips on some inexpensive and easy ways to promote your new idea.

There are three different types of promotions – Foundation, Branding and my favourite Call to Action. Your foundation promotions won’t change much over time unless your brand, image or contact info does. It serves to give you consistent referrals – so this will be signage on your car, store, business cards, directory listings (like hotfrog.com etc) and communication like 8 Mums in Business - September 2012

your newsletter. Branding is anytime your business is seen without added information, be sure to include two ways to contact you – website and phone – website and FB etc. If you are included in print media or on the internet, for smaller sized ads – be sure to make it simple and bold. Internet banners can be more effective if they are animated, meaning that there will be 2 – 4 images rotating in the same space. Branding promotions main purpose is to keep your business top of mind for consumers. When you are new to business, ensure there is a contact included, so they can easily find you. Call to Action ads are where you direct the reader/ viewer to what you want them to do. Just including images or brand names isn’t enough – it really is surprising how much more effective an ad is with directions in it. Some things to include are • “Sign up for our newsletter”- if you have a data base to send info directly to, half

your work is done. • “Like Us On Facebook / Twitter” etc – choose a couple of forms of social media and excel at it – be consistent and engaging. 80% general info and 20% selling is a good mix for posts. • Things that matter to your consumers – “Money Saving Ideas”, “Pick up A Bargain”, “Don’t Miss Out” , “WIN”, “New Low Price”, “Limited Stock”, “Call Us NOW” etc. Other things to consider are running a giveaway or competition with a print magazine, blog or website. This will cost you little, just a few products – but gain you loads of attention – more than if you were to take out advertising as they are likely to promote the competition/ giveaway through their social media networks. And you should too. Social Media is a terrific way to gain attention. You can start with your friends and build up your numbers from there. Post on other groups pages – NOT blasting your info, just comment and inter-

act and you will grow your liker and follower numbers. Be genuine – many businesses are avoided simply because they pop on and declare ‘Hello from your newest liker’ and never be seen again. Whereas when you build relationships with people – which is what social media is all about – you will build a strong and resourceful following that genuinely like you and are likely to buy from you! I LOVE untangling things – Christmas lights, the slinky at the bottom of the toy box and your small business promotions. I help mainly mums in business get organised so they can spend more time with their families rather than on their businesses and STILL make profits that make them smile! Over the years, I have run four of my own small businesses with four kids at my feet, or hanging from the back of my chair. My philosophy is that no idea is too big to achieve, it just might take some organising to get there. www.mymarketingdiary.com.au 9 Mums in Business - September 2012

Being in business means more than just

Doing what you

People often start a business with a technical skill in a product or service, or a passion for what they love. (personally I like the second reason, but that’s just me).

Where does sales fit in? If you are clear on all six areas of business. Your business will sell its self. Now that’s something to smile about in anyone’s language.

Now that’s a great place to start....However being in business is about more than just doing what you love... And being in business is about more than what you do.

So let’s look at all six areas one at a time.

Business can actually be broken up into 6 key areas 1. Product/Service 2. Distribution 3. Marketing 4. Team 5. Finance 6. Demand and they all flow together 14 Mums in Business - September 2012

Marketing comes down to your ability to communicate to your target market what your product and service can do for them.

particularly a service provider, that convinces them to buy.

With social media platforms like Facebook and Linkedin making business networking much easier and more accessible than the traditional networking meeting, your business headshot is now at the forefront of your business and you know what they say “you don’t get a second chance to make a first impression!”

Sometimes, we buy from certain people because they are like us, understand us, or we have aspirations to be their type of customer. So when potential clients see your profile, do you look like the kind of person they can work with, get to know and trust?

When you visit a networking website, the chances are that the profile picture of the individual you are looking at jumps out at you before you read any text. In that fraction of a second you decide whether or not this is the kind of person you want to connect with – almost regardless of what their profile actually reveals. Being in business you would understand that, up to a certain level, buying decisions are influenced by the quality and cost of service or products on offer. Above that, it’s the reputation and experience a person has with a company,

With a great profile image you can quickly grab the attention of viewers and readers because your photo looks superior to your competitors, they are then more likely to read on about you and your business.

Whatever line of work you are in, if you are promoting yourself, you need a great headshot as your profile image. More than just a good photograph, a great headshot is a powerful tool for making people remember you. This is because facial recognition is wired deeply inside every human mind. It is very much to your advantage to provide a profile image that people can identify with and remember you by. By Beverly Cassidy

eating way to success Time is a premium in today’s busy world and if you are like most busy people you may take short cuts. Unfortunately taking short cuts with eating will mean less energy, less efficiency and poorer health. So if you want to have great energy levels, fantastic concentration, restorative sleep and wonderful health, then apply the 3P approach: Plan, Prepare and Perform (roll out your plan) and EAT YOUR WAY TO SUCCESS!

Plan Look at your week in advance and work out where you will be over the week. You may have meetings, need to work late or find yourself in different venues. For all of these occaisons (including work and social) you will find some forward planning will pay huge dividends. a. Plan your week in advance or plan a few days ahead. b. Shopping lists Once you have planned your meals, you will be able to work out what foods to buy and the quantities. Ideally you can do this at a market and butcher. This saves money, time and gives you the best produce (which will last longer and taste better). 23 Mums in Business - September 2012

c. Consider having your own vegetable patch. Having your own garden is very exciting indeed! It means fresh supply of vegetables whenever you like. It is a great way to destress and get “back to nature” which will help you excel in the workplace too! Prepare Preparing food can take a long time. Interestingly large amounts of time can be saved by preparing vegetables, salads and meats in advance. What may take 30-60 minutes each night will often only take 1.5-2 hours for the whole week’s preparing when done in one sitting. Save time, stop yourself from being tempted to eat junk food and turn the preparation time into a GREEN light activity. Turn up the music, have a dance, relax and enjoy preparing your food in advance. Make salads up and put into separate bowls, or cut vegetables and leave in containers to be mixed up at a later date and add marinades to meats and put in the freezer until the day they are needed. Perform Planning and preparing are wonderful steps to improve your eating and success but you need to actually stick to the plan. On the night you have planned fish and salad, make sure you go to your fridge and eat it (ie don’t get lazy and eat toast or order

Refer to your plan (stick it on the fridge) and make sure you roll out the plan! Sticking to these 3 principles will ensure you eat your way to success. Some other hot tips: 1. Match carbohydrate foods with protein foods 2. Drink 2 litres of water a day 3. Eat regularly – every 2-3 hours 4. Eat fresh, vibrant food not deep fried, nutrient poor take aways 5. Keep nuts in your top draw as a perfect snack 6. Don’t eat infront of your computer or while doing work as your gastric juices will be switched off 7. Avoid high sugar foods and adding sugar to drinks 8. Metabolism Boosting Tips for the Unbelievers by Sabrina Muller

Many people are familiar with this rule of thumb: the slower the metabolism, the easier the weight packs on. Simply put if you don’t boost your metabolism during the day, it may be the reason why its taking you even longer to work towards your ideal body shape. Improving your metabolism does require a bit of effort, planning and confidence in yourself to eat the right way. Try this:

1

2

Eat heaviest in the morn ing, moderately at lunchtime, and lightest at dinner. If you don’t want your carbs to affect your waistline, reserve them for the earlier part of your day which will give your body more time to burn them off. For lunch, go a bit lighter (lean cuts of beef or chicken on a salad) and make dinner a great opportunity to eat a satisfying meal without feeling stuffed

3

Exercise a minimum of Eat a healthy breakfast three times a week. Your within one hour of wakbody will begin changing when ing up. Pair your breakfast you add exercise into your rouwith high protein and fiber, tine. Remember, you are not such as scrambled eggs, yoghurt your past. 4

Make your drinks calorie free and your meals small but frequent. Stick to water (add lemon, frozen berries or other fresh herbs) and other calorie “free” drinks such as Tea and Coffee, no soft drinks or juices. Focus on small meals but therefore do eat more regularly, every 3-4 hours, keeping your metabolism revving. This also means that you will never allow your body to go in ‘starvation mode’ which is ultimately what happens when you skip meals.

5

Cut 100 calories a day. Eat half of a turkey sandwich instead of the entirety; skip that second helping of chips, leave the baked potato and opt for another helping of steamed vegetables instead. Even better, make your own snacks. Not only are the pre-packed snacks laden with saturated fats and loads of

sugar, but you get to control the ingredients that go into your snacks by adding more nutrient dense options.

Be good to yourself, and start by what goes inside, in order to feel more amazing on the outside.

In a microwave dish cook the potatoes, carrots, onion and cabbage together for about 10 minutes or until the potato is tender but not falling apart. In a separate bowl, mince the sausace meat, then add the cooked vegies and the cup of cheese and mix together well. In a shallow baking tray, overlap the two pieces of pastry, then pour in the filling, and cover with the pastry joining in the middle (fold it like an envelope). Brush with the egg, and cook in a medium oven until golden brown all over! Serve with tomato sauce and a fork! For something a bit tastier add a teaspoon of curry powder!

Top 3 Positive Mindset Tricks to Push You Past Your Workout The truth is, when you want to change your body, you must first change your mind. By Sabrina Muller

W

hat has prevented you from achieving fitness success in the past? Was it negative thoughts that creep into your head every time you train? Do you keep fixating on your past and ‘failures’ experienced when you tried to lose weight before? Treat those ‘failures’ as learning ground, an opportunity to rise up into a stronger version of yourself. The stronger you are inside, the fitter you’ll be on the outside. Apply these positive strategies to become your best, healthy self for the present and the future. 1. Establishing a ‘Glass is Half Full’ Workout

A positive mindset is the key to achieving the body of your dreams, but it isn’t always so easy to find. Negativity is everywhere, from traffic preventing us from getting to work on time to a stranger that rudely comment31 Mums in Business - September 2012

ed for you to “hurry up!” in line at the grocery store. The trick is, constantly looking for opportunities to redirect negative feelings, thoughts and opinions and transforming them into something positive. This goes double for your workout. 2. Create a Grateful State of Mind

One of the quickest and easiest ways to develop a stronger mindset is through the art of being grateful for what you have. Do you have two working legs, eyes, arms and a body that functions, for the most part, effortlessly? Then you have a whole lot to be grateful for! Just by training your mind to give thanks not only for the ability to exercise, but to be grateful for those things you want (a flat stomach, to be able to run a marathon, etc.) you’re training yourself – through the practice of

positive thinking to receive those very things you’re thankful of now. 3. Allow Yourself to Stay in the Moment

Your work life is a busy one. Think ahead of the hour a day you spend running, jumping and squatting as your time. It’s your time to strengthen your body (and let’s face it, it’s the only body you’ve got!), and to destress, When you stay in the moment and do something nurturing and wholesome for yourself, you work out harder and have more motivation than ever before. If you want to achieve that dream body, you first need to develop an ideal mindset. Believe in yourself. You are unique, gifted, talented, athletic and best of all, motivated to be your best. All because of you – amazing, inspirational, limitless you.

financing tips for

your business

By Renee Ferguson

If you are thinking about borrowing money for your business, here are some points to help make it easier for you to make the right decision or have the right conversation with your financial institution. Deciding what sort of finance you need to grow your business is a big decision for small businesses. Taking the time to research options is a challenge for busy mums in business. The good news is that financial institutions are there to help you get the right solution for your business. Interest rates are relatively low at the moment. The rate is important and you should shop around. Make sure you look at the total cost of borrowing, including account fees and charges. A traditional loan is not the only way to finance

your business. Commercial finance can be a fast, flexible way to get immediate use of equipment such as cars, plant or computers. To simply free up some short term cash, a business line of credit or overdraft are options. Business credit cards are also a safe, secure and easy way to finance purchases. They are usually cheaper and more widely accepted than cheques and can give you interest free access to money for a certain period, provided you pay the balance of the monthly bill in full. Importantly, they can help you build up a business credit rating. When choosing a business finance provider you should also consider service and the other products they can offer such as business accounts, insurance, payroll and personal banking. This

includes the quality and experience of the financial organisations’ business bankers and other staff. Make sure you can access your money in the way that suits your business, whether that be by internet, phone and mobile banking or its branch opening hours.

PayPal - If you offer PayPal as a payment option for your products or services, this free iPhone-only app will come in handy for keeping track of your account balance, adding or withdrawing funds, viewing previous transactions and requesting money from customers all from the palm of your hand. It doesn’t have all the functionality of the PayPal website, for example you can’t send invoices, but it does offer enough that you may not need to log into PayPal.com every time you need to complete a transaction.

WordPress - I am a strong advocate for WordPress. For the past seven years, every website I’ve created was based on WordPress for it’s ease of use and flexibility and the fact that you don’t need a degree in programming to run a WordPress site. With the WordPress app, you can’t modify your theme or plugins like you can from the Dashboard but you can create and edit new pages or posts and respond to comments while on the go.

QuickOffice - It’s pretty much a given that to run a business, you’ll need some form of word processing software. Quickoffice, valued at AU$10.49, is a solution to creating and editing Microsoft® Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents on the go from your iPhone or iPad. The built-in File Manager also allows you to synchronise your documents through Evernote, Dropbox, Google Docs and more for access on other devices or on a computer.

Mailchinp - My mailing lists are a very important part of the business and to help me keep track of new subscribers, manage different lists and view reports from previously sent campaigns, I use the free MailChimp app for iPhone. You can’t send emails from within the app but you can monitor their progress at a glance without having to log into the MailChimp website.

Why should I shield my kids from “Adult” Internet Content?

Some people passionately believe that the freedom to make your own mind up about what you can see and do is a fundamental human right, while others equally fervently argue that it’s vital to have someone who evaluates everything and makes those decisions for you. I’m certainly not inclined to tell other adults what they should or shouldn’t do – I’m way too busy trying to keep myself on the straight and narrow. But when it comes to children, I’m not quite so libertarian. Particularly with my own kids, I’m very conscious of my responsibility to introduce them as gently and gradually as I can to the unwholesome and scary realities of life in the 21st Century. You and I might disagree about what constitutes pornography, or the age at which a person should be considered an adult. But not everything is shades of grey. I don’t believe you need a PhD in Psychology to know that there are some things in this world that a seven year old mind simply isn’t ready to cope with. Does anyone really think it’s OK for a little boy or girl to accidentally or deliberately stumble across an Inter-

net site that shows them frighteningly explicit, violent pornography? Or a graphic video of terrorists beheading a fearful and pleading victim? I don’t. In case you didn’t know, that kind of material is out there on the Internet in abundance. With very few exceptions, there are no effective strategies in place on adult content sites to keep children out. Unless you have a filter on your end of the Internet connection to protect them, a simple typo in a web address or Google search can have your kids stumbling on to sites that might either terrify them, or worse still, change them forever. For us, it’s always been a no-brainer. My husband’s work as a computer technician meant that he had the skills and tools to proactively supervise Internet access for our kids, so we’ve always done that. To be completely honest we probably nailed things down a little too tightly at first, but as a busy working mum, it’s been such a comfort to know that we have a “safety fence” to protect my kids from the nasty stuff on the Net while they do their school work or connect with their friends on Facebook.

ISSUE: We tend to treat our young home tribe members in our family (particularly in the 0-6 years age group) as if they are blank canvases by which grown-ups like us (especially being responsible parents) need to fill the foundation pages with every brush-stroke. Let me propose that perhaps they (like all of us) are born with wisdom that just needs to be remembered and unleashed. So any way we can (as responsible grown-ups, parents and human beings) to draw forth this genius through collaborative learning partnerships is key.

STORY & KEY LEARNING: Life is about remembering what we know but have forgotten. Our children are great mirrors for us. I have learnt much from my children, Jett and Xian. I remember when Jett and Xian were 4 and 2 years of age. They used to constantly argue between them in front of me - but not ever with their father or grandparents or any other carer. So the next time they erupted into another tirade of shouting, I stepped in and loudly retorted: "Enough! Jett into your room. Xian you too. Time out!" To which they obeyed. I went into Xian's room and demanded to know: "Why do you both squabble loudly like a flock of cockatoos when I am around and never with Dad or Grandma?" To which came the reply: "You never seem to mind, Mum." "What makes you think I don't mind?" I was now curious. "Dad and Grandma tells us loud and clear when we start getting a bit too noisy. So we know they mind, and so we stop." Interesting. I wandered into Jett's room and asked the same question. Without collusion, I extracted a similar reply. Very interesting. So I gathered my two children together, thanked them for their insight, and told them that I did mind when they made a racquet. I just did not show it in the manner their father and grandmother did. They both assured me that they did not like me upset and promised to do better. They asked me to let them know as soon as I was getting upset in order to learn when they were crossing the line. They hugged me and said they were glad of the conversation. I kissed them and promised to give them immediate feedback should it happen again. After a few more reminders, my flock of cockatoos disappeared to be replaced by the angels that they are.

The 7Rs of Parenting: What I learnt from them can be summarised in The 7Rs of Parenting: 1. Role modelling - others who observe intelligently (like they did) will model the behaviour that works in different situations to get the outcome they want 2. Respect - based on #1 above, they modified their behaviours to respect the people and the context 3. Rules - how seamlessly did they adjust to the rules in different contexts 4. Routine - they are flexible and adaptable 5. Review and reflect - they are open to have an honest discussion when things weren't working 6. Reorganize - they simple adapted to new behaviour with feedback for a win-win result 7. Response-able - they showed me how they moved comfortably into a new routine

PRACTICAL ACTIVITIES: ♦

Create opportunities to understand your children’s world or point of view e.g. ask them about what bugs them and partner with them to consider new ways to make it better.

Notice your own model of the world - is there something that bugs you that you can partner with your children to get their perspective of new ways to make it better?

Challenge alleged negative behaviour you observe from your children by reframing the way you look at it. For example, replace “They are naughty for overstepping the boundaries” with “I have not set the boundaries clear enough of what I expect of them - let me work with them to get that clearer”.

Creating gift hampers for all occasions

Case studies No. 1 Mary B, one of our clients, called us but she wasn't sure if we could help them. They were looking for a gift to be sent to their daughter on behalf of their grandchildren because Daddy forgot to buy a birthday present for Mummy from the children. The instructions we were given, I want something for the adults and something for the children but it needs to be healthy.

Solution We came up with the perfect solution for Adults and children alike. We created a gift basket that included a bottle of wine, Brie cheese, water crackers and a selection of fresh fruit which was great because the whole family could share in the goodies that were sent.

No.2 Bill called us and wanted to send something for his girlfriend, for no particular reason just to let her know she was being thought of.

Solution We sent, on his behalf, a gift voucher to a day spa to have a Full Facial and Pedicure. We put this in a gift box along with a Bottle of Moet and Pink Lady cream centred chocolates. The perfect gift to spoil someone you love.

In both cases Mary and Bill were very happy with the gift ideas we came up with and their loved ones were very excited to receive their gifts as they were unexpected and a great surprise.

It is the element of surprise that makes a great gift. We would be delighted to assist you with your special gift. Simply phone MARIA on 02 9897 6184 or 0417 682 763 today to discuss how she can help you create the perfect gift.

Everything is your responsibility, not yours or anyone else’s fault. We must be the ones to direct our focus toward what we want and learn how to get to where we want to be. This is where TheJoyHut can help Angela’s Qualifications: Bachelor of Health Science, Remedial Massage Therapy, Diploma of Spiritual Healing, Master NLP & Hypnosis Practitioner, Performance & Results Coach & Subconscious Reprogramming How do you start your day?

Typically, my day starts early to the sounds of my 14month old son. I ask myself what it is that I am grateful for today before my feet hit the floor, get up and after attending to my son, have a glass of lemon water to alkaline

my system, open up the house to let the freshness of the day flow, and stretch/exercise (usually using my son as weights as he loves to join in!). Breakfast is usually shared while feeding my boy, dress both of us, and play, then some domestic work begins. Finally when my boy is going down for his morning nap, my business work day begins! This is usually around 9am. What hours/ days do your work?

Sometimes it feels like I do 24hours as a mum’s work is a juggling act. I set an intention of at least doing most of my business work between 9am -6pm, although depending on my son’s needs, this varies. I mainly stick to keeping the weekends for catching up with family and friends. I find it extremely important to keep a balanced life as much as possible, even if it takes a little longer to complete projects and asking for some assistance from loved ones. Do you have a designated area you work in your house?

Since having a baby, it’s incredible how he appears to take up a lot of space for such a little thing! So, where we are for now, we have

a shared office and I like to take my work out in the sunshine on lovely days. My son loves to run around while I sit and work at the outdoor setting too! Do you have a routine you stick to for work?

I have a rough routine, however have learnt that I need to be flexible when it comes to being a mum and working at the same time, I have set days that I go to network meetings and I consult in my room at Robina on Wednesday mornings. I made a decision to never do work just before I go to bed, unless it is simply organising what I need for the following day if I am running a workshop or consulting. This is so my mind can prepare itself for quality sleep; otherwise, I would not shutdown! Do you have help with your kids/ business or are you doing everything on your own?

My partner helps with my child when he gets home from work and my parents have been absolutely fabulous in watching him when I need to focus completely on the tasks for work! Thank you so much for your help! And I would love to take the opportunity here to thank Mums In Business Members and Melissa Groom for being so understanding when I have had to bring my boy to our meetings! He does love seeing you all . What motivates you to keep going?

What I teach others , and my baby. The insights I have gained and that I am still learning, coupled with my natural urge to assist others in their own growth and challenges, motivates me. The fact that I now have a family who looks up to me for guidance I’m asking myself constantly...”are you living in accordance with the

legacy you want to leave?”. I find that my values as a mother and a woman have such a profound motivational quality. A mother is the very first person that teaches their children how to ‘BE’ in this world and that is all the motivation needed! Who’s your biggest role model in business?

Learning that it’s ok to ask for help and take some time out for me! Being a mum is so demanding at times and I feel that it’s so important to keep practicing balance in your life, especially as a mother. We all have these different ‘hats’ that we put on throughout our lives that represent different ‘roles’ that we play. We are chefs, bankers, mediators, partners, mothers, cleaners, gardeners, managers and teachers (just to name a few). The thing is to always remember to keep in touch with the amazing woman you are underneath each of those hats and even whilst these hats are interchangeable, you are the same heart and beautiful soul at the core. Never be too afraid or proud to ask for help when needed. The consequences of expecting to do it all on your own is much worse than speaking up!

As far as a ‘Mum in Business’, I would have to say, Kiwi born-Aussie mum, Terriane Palmer. Her personal purpose in life is very similar to mine, which is to inspire and motivate people to live up to their true potential and achieve excellence in all areas of their life. Get what you want in 365 days. YEAH RIGHT.... AS IF! We change the channel on our TV at the flick of a button.... and That change can change our whole emotional state. And it can happen in a spilt second. LIFE is the same as that. And that is why we believe you can create the life you want in 365 days. Quite simple really......Repeat after me “I have created the life that I live...... Therefore I can create the life that I want”.... DON’T BELIEVE IT, SAY IT AGAIN! “I HAVE created the life that I live...... Therefore I CAN create the life that I want” We are about to embark on our own personal journey to get what we want in 365 days and you’re invited... And because by coming with us on the journey you are helping us....we are going to return the favor, We are offering a select few people to 12 months of support for less than what we normally charge for six months of business or lifestyle coaching. So if you have something you want to achieve in the next 365 days then. TODAY IS YOUR LUCKY DAY. Don’t take our word for it check out what others are saying... “If you have a serious goal to Get What you Want in 356 Days, then this program is a must. I have been coached by Graham at Rexov for a little over 365 days, and my life has shifted. Not just a little but seismic shifts, and more than I thought was possible. This time last year I lived between my car and my parents house, was in a dead end relationship, up to my eyeballs in debt and with no path for the future- and I was sick of ‘potential’, ‘intelligence’ and ‘working hard’. Partnering with Graham to set goals- ones that make you smile- has been transformational- because in twelve months I have achieved them- sometimes in spite of myself! I now have a small business, a partnership and a company- but more importantly the professional satisfaction that I’ve never felt before, I am on top of my previous money problems, I love where I live and I am excited about building on that progress in the next twelve months of coaching. Even if you don’t know what you want, using the Rexov system you’ll find it, take action and make it yours in 365 days” Lissanthea Taylor The Equestrian Physiotherapist Rise Health Care Group
