PHOTO: ALICIA RINKA SEE MORE ON PAGE 56When I look at this cover, I am immediately transported to a place of tranquility, peace, and calmness. The color palette is soft and soothing, reminding me of a beautiful sunset, and the design is giving refined luxury. Shot on location at the new Napa Valley luxury resort, Auberge Resorts, this editorial was carefully curated and perfectly crafted by Chanda Daniels Planning + Design team and captured by Alicia Rinka Photography. It's an honor to celebrate them with this cover on International Women's Day. Our latest cover is completely refreshing and representative of the times we are in: a time of weddings reimagined.
I like to call this period we are in a golden renaissance which can be described as an amalgamation of the Golden Age, a time of prosperity and achievement, and the Renaissance, a period of rebirth and revival. There is a sense of relief that the pandemic is receding, and the wedding industry is flourishing once again.
At MunaLuchi, we have been able to survive and even flourish as a company during the pandemic. We are currently experiencing our own rebirth with the re-introduction of our signature bridal show experience, The Muna Love Affair , which we have put on hold since February 2020. This year, the bridal tour will visit multiple locations, including Brooklyn, Miami, and the DMV area. In addition, we have introduced a new luxury retreat called the Love and Legacy Retreat . It's an intimate business retreat for couples navigating entrepreneurship together. Our first annual Love and Legacy Retreat will be held in Curacao from August 28-31, 2023. Finally, we will wrap up the year by hosting our 9th annual Coterie Retreat in the beautiful Cayman Islands from December 4-7, 2023.
Whether you connect with us on our website, social media channels, or at one of our events, our goal is to provide you with practical advice and creative ideas that will leave you inspired. I'm confident that this issue will be a great source of inspiration and guidance for you, enabling you to make your day extra special and meaningful for you and your guests.
Happy Planning!

Popular Destinations to Say I Do in 2023
TEXT BY ONIKI HARDTMAN OF OH NIKI OCCASIONS + PETITE PALM BEACH WEDDING COLLECTIONSThinking of having a destination wedding and simply don’t know where to start with the planning!?
I get it, Sis. You “love to travel” and explore the world but the logistics for organizing a group seem entirely TOO MUCH to handle on top of all the stress you’re experiencing at work this year! It’s “so much more simple” to book a getaway when it’s just you and Bae flying to Tulum to swim in a cenote. Your dream wedding destination is halfway across the world but you’re simply “unsure if it’s too unreasonable” to have your family and friends fly there with you and you don’t want your grandparents to miss your big day, right? Or maybe you figure that this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience your dream and you can always celebrate with friends with a party when you get back home - cause “a party costs less than a wedding, right!?!”.
Well take it from me, my name is Oniki Hardtman of Oh Niki Occasions and I’m a Destination Wedding Planner and Luxury Travel Advisor based in South Florida & New Jersey who plans incredible destination experiences for busy clientele from all over the world. I love hearing exactly what my clients' dreams and challenges are for their wedding, then making those dreams come true based on their lifestyle + budget and what makes the most sense for them - anywhere in the world!
Here are a few of the hottest wedding destinations to choose from and why they likely make sense for you, too - in 2023 and beyond!
1. Jamaica
Let’s just say it: there is never NOT going to be a time when the island of Jamaica is not a HOT location for Destination Weddings! No matter your budget, vision, or how many times you’ve visited this well-rounded island in The Caribbean - there is always something new and unforgettable to experience and explore.
There is SO much to love about Jamaica:
• Rich culture
• Flavorful food and beverage (hello Rum Punch & Blue Mountain coffee!)
• The loveliest landscape where lush green mountainous terrain meets the turquoise ocean in 6 distinctly different resort areas with calm rivers and climbable waterfalls flowing throughout its 14 total parishes
• Daily airlift from most major US airlines and cities throughout the world
• Affordability for any and every budget - from very economical to the highest level of effortless luxury - means that no matter what your vision is for a destination wedding, you can have it in Jamaica.
Hire a Jamaica Wedding Expert to help you choose from an array of venues such as Historic estate homes and castles too, toes in the sand on the beach or terraces and rooftops with unforgettable views, modern mansions, and villas, quaint
boutique hotels with garden gazebos or even Over the Water Chapels at sprawling all-inclusive resorts with every convenience that you and your guests can imagine.
2. Italy
One of the most romantic countries in the world is Italy and there are so many beautiful cities within this European destination to host your wedding - each with its own unique charm and attributes.
• Florence is simply magical. Say your I-Dos with picturesque views of the Arno river and the rolling hills of Tuscany within a stone’s throw. Your guests will love traveling here to enjoy premium handmade pasta paired with a beautiful Chianti Classico, followed by enjoying gelato for dessert while strolling along the cobblestone streets in the days leading up to and after your wedding. If guests are making a Trans-Atlantic flight from the states, encourage them to extend their stay and take the train to other Italian cities such as Venice or Rome if they truly want to immerse themselves in this culturally rich destination.
• For those that truly want to live like the jet set and wed in coastal villas just as their favorite celebrities do, a Lake Como wedding is truly on trend for 2023 and just a 40-minute train ride from Italy’s fashion capital - Milan!
3. Miami
It only makes sense that a cultural melting pot like Miami can suit any and every wedding size and vibe that you are going for! From beachfront suites to big ballrooms for hundreds in the hottest new hotels, private presidential suites, and legit tropical gardens, too - Greater Miami is the answer to having the domestic destination wedding of your dreams with no passport required.
• Searching for a charming European garden? Vizcaya or an Ancient Spanish Monastery is just the place!
• Want a chic rooftop pool deck to party on? Just about every hotel downtown has one.
Want to show off your Caribbean Culture through cuisine? The menus here are never lacking in flavor because our people make up the very fabric of this community and the booming hospitality industry in South Florida.
4. Martha’s Vineyard
Name a better place for ‘Jumping the Broom’ than on Martha’s Vineyard during the warm summer months when this tiny island off the coast of Massachusetts becomes a haven for America’s Black Elite.
• June, July, and August are the perfect months to pack up the car to hop on a fast ferry along with it and the family or grab your companions and fly in commercial from the Northeast or private from anywhere you please.
The most popular on-island accommodations include vacation rental homes which are typically available by the week - but please be careful about understanding the owner’s rules regarding hosting weddings & events if you decide to rent one for use during this special occasion.
• The best options for hosting your Destination Wedding include one of the island's many fantastic restaurants with indoor or outdoor space for tented weddings, whimsical cottages, quaint inns, and beautiful boutique hotels throughout Edgartown, Chilmark, Vineyard Haven , and historic Oak Bluffs where you will likely run into friends - particularly if you attended or your spouse attended an HBCU.
5. Bermuda
Couples wanting an island wedding that is convenient for travel yet likely not previously visited by the vast majority of your guests can often find that in Bermuda!
• This pristine and picturesque island off the coast of the Carolinas is a quick 1.5-hour flight from NYC and also boasts direct flights from Atlanta, Miami, Toronto, London & more.
• You will not find any massive all-inclusive resorts here on this island of 21 square miles, but rather a lovely assortment of luxurious hillside hotels from which to choose.
• Whether you are planning your wedding on a pretty pink sand beach, an unfinished outdoor church structure, the gorgeous gardens of a private island estate, a terrace perched above the sea at a modern boutique hotel, or one of the island’s many lush golf courses - Bermuda will provide you with the intimate feel of a luxury island location curated perfectly to your tastes and one that your guests will never forget.
• If you want to marry here, April through August will be your best bet for perfect weather to catch those sunsets!
6. Turks & Caicos
When most people tell you they’ve just come back from Turks & Caicos and had an amazing time (as everyone does), more than likely they have visited the island of Providenciales or “Provo” as it’s more affectionately called by locals. We fell in love with the island a few years back and I have to say it is one that I return to most frequently for many reasons.
• It’s a hop, skip and jump just over the 700 Islands of the Bahamas which make it less than 1.5 hours from South Florida and just as easily accessible for my friends & family members up and down the East Coast.
• Much of the island is so untouched and primed for development so there is no shortage of modern hotels of varying vibes, sprawling private villas, and luxe, fun resorts to choose from - whether you seek family-friendly to adult-only luxury playgrounds.
• With private islands just a speedboat away, you can have as much seclusion or all-inclusion as you’d like for your special day to celebrate with family and friends.
7. South Africa
There is something very special about Cape Town that makes all who visit want to immediately return! It could be that feeling of being on top of the world when you reach the top of Table Mountain or the connectedness you feel to history when your ferry reaches Robben Island where Mandela was imprisoned.
• The stunning scenery and modern hotel and restaurant wedding venue options found in this uncostly coastal city will leave you feeling like Kings and Queens - not just on your wedding day, but every day because the exchange rate is unbelievably good!
• If you love wine as I do, hire a driver and take time to explore the nearby Stellenbosch Wine Region which is also the perfect place to host a beautiful wedding in a sprawling vineyard!
• Want to see the Big 5 on your Big Day!? That can be arranged if you dare do a Luxury Safari Wedding!
Stretch your imagination and see that a Destination Wedding can be more than you have ever dreamed.
8. Curacao
This soon-to-be shining star of a wedding destination may not be as well known as its’ more Americanized neighbor next door, Aruba, but with a good handful of All-Inclusive resorts and popular hotel brands to choose from, including the newest romantic Sandals Adult Only resort which opened just last year, you will find:
• Curacao boasts the same favorable climate (including a general lack of hurricane threats) as well as fewer tourists which will allow you and your guests to feel like you've truly found a hidden gem on this very European-feeling Dutch island.
• Marriage laws also make it a favorable destination for Same-Sex Couples to show that love is love and that’s all the more reason to love Curacao for your Destination Wedding in 2023 & beyond!
9. Napa Valley
Let’s toast to my very favorite mainland destination on the West Coast - Napa Valley! As a wine lover myself, this area of the country is a dreamland.
• Whether your guest list is full of fellow oenophiles or not, there is always something to do such as luxuriate at the spa, indulge in scenic drives, and enjoy multi-course dinners at Michelin-starred restaurants followed by hours-long conversations with friends around the firepit at a variety of boutique hotels, resorts and inns.
• If you are dreaming of getting married with the grapevines as your backdrop, you will want to do so when the leaves are lush, so consider the high season which is late April through early October. Beyond that, it may be too sparse for optimal photographs to capture the true essence of this magical landscape.

Who and what inspires you when planning a couple’s most cherished moments?
I am mostly inspired by the couple, their story, how they interact together, and how they look at each other.
In the process, my detailed questionnaire (or the discovery call) plays an important role. The emotional connection that I will create with the couple is the inking point of all our future collaboration. I know perfectly well the needs, the desires, the hidden desires (the ones that he or she will not say), then it's up to me to understand and defuse the non-verbal communication of my client.
What role does fashion play in your event designs as you create luxurious, Haute Couture destination weddings and elopements?
As far as I remember, fashion has always played a role in my personal and professional life. I love dressing up, creating looks for a night out, for events, and any occasion is an excuse to buy a new dress, new jewelry, or a new lipstick.
When it comes to weddings, I always encourage my couples to define several looks because they are not just coming for their wedding celebration, but for a true European experience. Sometimes it is the first time their family members come to Paris, and they want and need to create memories worthy of the most iconic movies.
A destination wedding over 3 days gives you the opportunity to create colorful and stylish outfits. Imagine it: a rehearsal dinner on the theme of the cruise has fun, a cruise on the Seine, by
night, an experience both cultural and so glamorous. I visualize it at nightfall. I envision, of course, artists, a cocktail around the world, and a design with a multitude of flowers.
The sparkling Eiffel Tower is the highlight of the show. The wedding will be elegant and modern. Why not be inspired by Chanel; black, white, and notes of pink more pronounced, and finally, touches of crystal. We visualize a nuanced monochrome, warmed by touches of pink, very editorial. But what could be more elegant than black and white?
If my client mentions that she likes Cartier a lot, then I will work with my artistic team on the house's codes. Cartier red, the love ring, touches of gold...Oh, the monogram of the couple, the invitations... It's all in the details. We are truly artisans of excellence.
To finish, a pool party in a privatized castle. Still, there are so many possibilities. I create mood boards with links for dedicated outfits, swimwear, sandals, men's outfits, and accessories.
We will also focus on the staging of cocktail pieces, everything will be very visual (cocktails, bar, candy bar, design ...) why not crepe and artisanal ice cream stations? As the Fashion Event Stylist & Artistic Director, I create bespoke Designs thanks to the fumes of an elusive inspiration.
What are your essential planning tips for executing a luxurious, impactful microwedding in France?
Everything is in the details. I think about how to be recognizable, different, and iconic.
If we conceive an event, whatever it is, with the desire to confer a mysterious, iconic, glamorous dimension, then we impregnate ourselves with the codes of the couple. We embody their story with modern and very fashionable notes, sometimes dramatic. Or we go for the Renaissance and the Baroque.
It's SO EXCITING because it's always a blank canvas where everything remains to be designed. Like architects, we are inspired by nature, the place, a word, an expression of the couple. There are infinite possibilities. In what ways can planners elevate an intimate ceremony?
I am an emotional person, so to be able to witness love is so magical. My one and only motivation is to give them back this dream. After the exchange of vows, it's so beautiful to take a cruise on the seine, just for the two of them.
We can already imagine a second outfit for a more modern look. Why not a black dress with tulle and transparency for her, gloves with feathers, and a boa? And a beautiful jacket in the eggplant tone for him. One raises the ultra-masculine side of the man while remaining elegant, sober, and modern to him.
And then we reserve a sports car, that the man will be able to drive (a wink on the Place Vendôme for example). You would be surprised to see how much the couple adoooore to play the stars, to feel like James Bond, in Paris, it is magic.
We don't plan an event, we create indelible memories.
Why is France a great place to say I-do?
I love this question! We have castles if you like the classic and elegant look. We have palaces and hotels for a luxurious celebration.
The Garnier Opera House or the Petit Palais are historical monuments that give such a sumptuous scope to your event. Nothing can match a wedding in such an iconic place.
Paris is an open-air museum, everywhere you go, there will be treasures, nuggets, and small, atypical streets for an elopement. But we also have this opening in the world. Europe is as much history, monuments, historical or modern places. A wonder of every moment.
I also like to evoke the variety of the weather and landscapes. It is possible to produce everything in France. The sweetness of the Dolce Vita of Provence, the glamour of the French Riviera, Paris… our gastronomy, and
the French art de vivre is not a myth. List your top 3 locations/venues in France for a micro-wedding/elopement and briefly explain why they stand out.
For an elopement or intimate wedding, I would recommend a small château near Paris or a Hôtel particulier like Musée Rodin or La Maison de Sylvie in Chantilly. For the most luxurious, I would choose Château de Vaux-le-Vicomte, which is splendor and will amaze your guests. These 3 venues are the best options for the right balance between History, Glamour, and Iconic. Advice for other planners trying to establish themselves in the wedding planning industry. You need to be recognized as your best brand ambassador. Who better than you can embody your brand and your signature? Do not be afraid to be different, do not be afraid to be borderline sometimes. You have it all.
I have surrounded myself with premium partners, who have always made it a point of honor to sublimate any celebration I design. And last but not least, always do everything for love and by love.
It is the perfect marriage of passion, devotion, and emotion to inspire the most iconic and memorable love celebration.

Belize: The New Hot Wedding Destination
TEXT BY LINDA WALLENTINEWe love a MunaCoterie Collab!
Set against the beautiful backdrop of the Alaia Belize, Autograph Collection in San Pedro, Belize, MunaCoterie members Ebony Stewart of EbonyCattouse Events and Couture Gown Designer Yemi Osunkoya of Kosibah teamed up to create a stunning styled shoot featuring 2021 Ms. Earth, Destiny Wagner.
As a Belizean herself, Ebony Stewart has been creating destination events in Belize for over 3 years now. However, for this styled shoot, she had a specific vision in mind to showcase the beauty of her beloved country.
“I wanted to capture more,” she explains. “I wanted to tell and show a different love story. One of its People, Beauty, and Culture, and why Belize is known as “Mother Nature’s Best Kept Secret”.”
This luxurious locale certainly is one of the best-kept secrets for destination weddings! With its close proximity to the United States, Belize is on the rise to becoming one of the top wedding destinations in the world. It was even voted one of the “friendliest countries in the world” by the travel magazine, Condé Nast Traveller, in its 2022 Readers’ Choice Awards.
Ebony shares, “Belize is an incredible destination because you get one destination with the best of both worlds: one foot rooted in Central America jungles and the other treading the Caribbean Sea.” With its diverse locations and an endless variety of exquisite wedding venues to choose from, she adds that “Belize is a honeymoon haven.”
In addition, she notes that Belize is the only English-speaking country in Central America, is home to the largest barrier reef in the Northern Hemisphere, and boasts 4,000 native flowering plants, with the Black Orchid being its National Flower - a floral designer's dream!
Ultimately, if you’re not yet swayed to book your destination wedding for the beautiful hidden gem that is Belize, you will be after viewing the rest of this gorgeous styled shoot!
Keep reading below for our exclusive interview with Ebony Stewart on her vision, inspiration, and advice for tying the knot in Belize, along with insight from Fashion Designer, Yemi Kosibah Osunkoya, on creating the perfect custom gown for your dream destination wedding.
Explain your inspiration for the design of the shoot.
I wanted to capture Belize's true essence of luxury at its finest. I wanted to tell a story of how luxurious “The Jewel” which is Belize can and could be for future brides.
Choosing the right location was very important. With sparkling ocean views, sleek decor, and relaxing settings, the Alaia Belize, Autograph Collection, was the perfect spot. The adults-only Rooftop Pool and Lounge provided the look I wanted to capture. With the second largest barrier reef in the world as my backdrop, I wanted to add elements for a high-end wedding that reflects Belize and all its beauty.
I created a design theme and tablescape that accentuated our location. It speaks for everything Belize as the jewel and “Mother Nature’s best kept secret”. Our décor was a fusion of beach chic and glam. We chose a neutral palette with shades of pink and pops of turquoise and gold.
The exquisite white gloss table gave our tablescape that clean look with the shades of blue of the Caribbean Sea, Belize’s largest barrier reef in the northern hemisphere, as our background. Using tropical-infused flowers like Bird of Paradise and Maraca Ginger was a great way to incorporate the natural
beauties of the island and the country of Belize as a whole.
Why was including Miss Earth 2021 important to your vision?
Destiny Wagner, Miss Earth 2021, was a part of my story and my vision. I wanted to showcase Belize’s beauty, glam, and uniqueness. Having Miss Earth wearing a Kosibah Couture Gown, at the Alaia Belize, Autograph Collection, at The adultsonly Rooftop Pool with the Largest barrier reef as the backdrop. Now that is Belize!
How was it working with the talented designer, Yemi?
It was a joy working with Yemi. He is a talented designer and collaborating with him was a blessing. He saw my vision, and we worked on creating the look you now see together.
What advice would you give to couples considering tying the knot in Belize? And what advice would you give to planners thinking about pitching the destination to their clients?
To couples seeking a destination wedding in Belize; If your guests love sea life, they’ll adore the many snorkeling and diving opportunities during your Belize destination wedding weekend. Plus, the weather is beautiful year-round, and there are lots of venues to choose from including renting your own private island! Belize makes an excellent and affordable choice
(currency locked at 2:1 US$) with plenty do for the adventure traveler from scuba diving, caving, trekking, or exploring the beautiful Caye’s or Mayan Ruins.
To Planners seeking to pitch and or use Belize for their client's next destination wedding: Organization, attention to detail, and communication (even more so than planning a local wedding) were key elements in our pre-planning phase prior to arriving in Belize.
Planning for the transport of wedding items such as decor pieces and wedding attire was important especially considering the airline baggage requirements and getting items from Belize City to San Pedro by boat and charter flight. For any bride interested in having a destination wedding, I recommend utilizing the natural beauty and resources San Pedro, Belize has to offer.
Working with local vendors and shipping/importing décor etc. for your destination wedding information is easily accessible through the resorts and or hotels who can always assist with in-depth information.
How has being a Coterie Member helped your businesses?
Being a Coterie Member has helped me reach clients in other parts of the Caribbean and launch great partnerships with
creatives like Yemi. Being a Coterie Member allows me to bring more options, new, fresh experiences, and ideas to my clients and I LOVE IT!
How did you work together to create a seamless vision between style, fashion, and design?
I created a mood board which I shared with Yemi and we discussed and shared ideas and kept each other updated throughout the planning process. Most importantly we trusted each other as much as we supported each other to bring the vision to life. For that, I thank Yemi and the entire creative team for believing in my vision of telling the story of Belize.
INTERVIEW WITH YEMI OSUNKOYA, FOUNDER OF KOSIBAH
Explain your creative process & inspiration as a designer. As a designer I am usually designing a custom/bespoke gown for a particular client, usually sitting in front of me at a bridal consultation.
During the consultation, on an iPad I show her past clients’ weddings (because I think it’s very important a client sees a vast array of any vendor's past work to ascertain their level of consistency), images from photo shoots, and design sketches.
I then ask a series of questions to find out what sort of dress would tick all her idealistic boxes. I also find out if there are any traditional or religious requirements that must be factored into the design. Most importantly, I analyze my client's figure type to see how best I can flatter and enhance her figure through my design and the techniques that would be employed during the creation of the dress.
After all this, I sketch a few designs in real-time and we narrow them down to one design.
How did you approach designing a custom gown for this shoot in Belize?
I knew the location was the Alaia Belize resort hotel which was very contemporary in style and had a beachfront that would be a location for one of the settings of the shoot. I also met with our model, the reigning Miss Earth at that time, Denise Wagner, and I was able to come up with a design that would flatter Denise and have multiple ways the gown would be worn to suit the various settings of the shoot.
What advice or tips do you have for brides seeking out a custom gown?
My advice to brides seeking a custom gown is to give yourself as much lead time as possible before your wedding date.
Do your best to ensure your budget matches the type of gown you want to avoid disappointment and frustration for both you and your designer. Think carefully about how you want to be perceived on your wedding day and try not to cut corners you may come to regret later.
It is everyone's hope that a wedding is a once-in-a-lifetime experience and with social media, videos, and digital albums, your dress is not really "for one day only." It's a captured moment that will last a lifetime and you want to get it right.
Before your consultation with the Designer, visit bridal stores and try on different silhouettes and styles of gowns because you may find that the style you’ve always had in mind may not be what suits you best or you can confirm that it does.
Try not to be swayed by the opinions of friends or acquaintances that may not necessarily have your best interest at heart. Take someone or a couple of people you really trust with you when doing your research and/or visiting your chosen designer, such as your mother, sister, or best friend. Always research your designer to ensure their previous work matches your expectations.
How does a destination (in this case, Belize) influence your design (material, functionality, style, etc.)?
The destination of a wedding certainly has an influence on the design. The weather at the time of the wedding, If the ceremony is indoors, outdoors, or a combination of both. Is it a beach wedding, an Italian Chateau, or a Scottish Castle? All these would require different design elements.
How was it working with fellow Coterie Member, Ebony Cattouse Events?
Working with a fellow Coterie member, Ebony Cattouse, was great because, in the first instance, I knew we were on the same page regarding our thoughts on professionalism, vision, and luxury.
We had a few meetings to flesh out our thoughts and ideas for this shoot, mostly Ebony explaining her vision for the shoot and me agreeing wholeheartedly and getting very excited about the possibilities.
It also gave me an opportunity to see how Ebony worked which makes it so much easier for me to refer her sterling service to all my brides in the future.
What advice would you give other designers creating looks for destination weddings? Explain any challenges you faced and how you overcame them.
I would advise that they do as much research on the destination and location as possible so they fully understand how the gown would fit into that setting to have the functionality. Also, think about how the gown would be transported to the destination and ensure it can be steamed/freshened once unpacked to be as pristine as possible before being worn by the bride.
How has being a Coterie Member helped your businesses?
Being a coterie member has been extremely beneficial to me because it has given me access to a family of wedding vendors to network with, share ideas with, and learn from. There are also lots of perks you get from being a member, such as the opportunity to feature in Munaluchi Bride magazine, to have a listing in the MunaLuchi Bridal Directory, and a discount on the cost of attending the wonderful annual Coterie Retreat.
How did you work together to create a seamless vision between style/fashion and design?
Ebony and I got on extremely well from the first time we met, and we built on that initial meeting and the conversations we had over time to get to a place where we knew we would work very well together.
She was very clear about the vision she had for the shoot which I thought was amazing. She ensured I was able to meet with our model beforehand which made it easy for me to create a gown, especially for the shoot.

WEDDING DATE: August 12, 2023
OCCUPATIONS: (Steffanii): Nurse/Entrepreneur/Maternity Education Consultant
(Cory): Senior Director of OperationsEngineer
PHOTOGRAPHEDHOW THEY MET: We met at a supermarket during the Covid-19 pandemic. I was staying at a hotel in NYC while working as a bedside nurse and went food shopping for my mom and the kids on my day off. We met and chatted about the pandemic and he offered to pay for my groceries as a way of saying thank you! I politely declined and we bonded from there.
PROPOSAL STORY: This was funny because I did not want to get out of bed! It was my only day off and I was exhausted from work that week. He said we needed to get dressed up and go out for a date since we didn't have kids.
The youngest that day started throwing up so I said we are staying in, but he refused. That afternoon my two sons, Cory and I left to go out to dinner.... it was 20 degrees outside. We get to a warehouse and I see there are helicopters. His best friend shows up (mine is in Ghana at the time) and the way he was fidgeting I knew he was up to something, per usual! He loved to surprise me.
Cory rented a helicopter to tour the city and popped the question as we appreciated the Statue of Liberty. The funny thing was I couldn't hear him due to the noise and headphones but saw the ring and said YES! But since we were on the helicopter he wasn't able to get down on one knee, when
we exited the helicopter he got down on one knee and asked again and of course, I said yes..again!
WHEN DID YOU KNOW HE/SHE WAS "THE ONE"? Steffanii and I had the opportunity to get to know one another as friends during quarantine after spending many hours on the phone. Steffanii is intelligent, beautiful, innovative, creative, thoughtful, and the epitome of a woman. Through our conversations, I was able to see then how our faith, family, and ambitions would blend with each other and create a solid union. Along with her qualities as a woman and mother, it was my spirit that validated my decision to ask her to be my wife.
ENGAGEMENT SESSION THEME: Yes, we wanted the photos to have a classic and timeless look and also a sexy Miami theme.
FIRST DATE? Our first date was during quarantine so we ate in. Cory prepared dinner at his apartment (he's an excellent cook).
FIRST DATE? We love to travel, eat and drink.
HOW HAS WEDDING PLANNING BEEN SO FAR? Wedding planning has been good. We are working with a wedding planner, Kia Marie, who has been a great help in planning our Chicago wedding.
Beatrice + Everett
LANDRUM, SC
PHOTOGRAPHED BY SMITHA LEE
WEDDING DATE: March 4th, 2023
WEDDING LOCATION: Edinburgh West
OCCUPATIONS: Owner-Operator & Football Coach; Stylist-Online Boutique Owner
HOW THEY MET: We met through Instagram while we both were living in New York in 2015. Everett was playing football, and I was working in the fashion industry.
It’s interesting because we both attended Florida State at the same time and had mutual friends but never ran into each other. We ended up speaking through dm and set up our first date in the city. The date was literally perfect. So perfect that we found ourselves on a few more before Everett relocated to Tampa to play for another team. At that moment, we decided to slow down as I wanted to explore the city more, and he was getting settled into a new space in his career. But we never stopped communicating, and whenever I would visit my mom in Tampa, we would catch up. Fast forward to 2017; he moved back up north. The flame rekindled, and after a few monthly flights back and forth from NYC to DC…… the rest is history!
PROPOSAL STORY: Bea: I thought we were going to the wedding brunch of our favorite cousins who were getting married the next month. We drove from
Greenville to Atlanta as we were going to have it at our other cousin’s restaurant, “Blaqhaus”. When we arrived, we were greeted at the door with one of my favorite songs playing that Everett had been playing all week. At the time, I thought nothing of it because of course, we both love the song. Then Everett was handed a mic and started thanking everyone for being there. As we come around the corner I see both of our families gathered around. I spot my oldest sister, who loves the comfort of her home more than anything lol, I knew something big was happening. Right after that, I noticed the balloons that read “Bea will you marry me” and my world went silent. I cannot tell you much after that because I was in a pool of happy tears. He got down on one knee, and I said, “OF COURSE!”
Everett: From the planning standpoint, I wanted to pick a location that was midway between South Carolina & Florida because her family is from Tallahassee, so I settled on Atlanta. My cousin, who was about to get married, helped set everything up. I told Bea that we were going to celebrate them, so she had no idea. Once everybody was at Blaqhaus, we made our way over. The whole time she was still clueless as to what was going on; even when she walked in, she didn’t catch on until the music stopped. It was a great day surrounded by family & friends. MUNA-BLING.
Bea: Let me start off by saying…. HE DID SO WELL! I was pleasantly surprised. Everett designed an Emerald cut solitaire diamond ring with a hidden halo finished with a diamond pave band. The funny part about this ring is that I have always said that I am not the halo type of girl. I like to get straight to the point lol. So in true Everett fashion, he added a hidden one because he thought it would be a nice touch and a funny insider for us to giggle about for years to come.
Everett: Proposing had been on my mind for a while. I knew it was time to make it official, so I started planning. When it came to the ring, I couldn’t find an oval as she mentioned earlier in our relationship. So I went with the emerald cut, and she ended up loving it.
WHEN DID YOU KNOW HE/SHE WAS “THE ONE”?
Bea: I felt it on the first date after talking about our upbringing and family values. It felt like…. two people from the South in the big apple finding a home in each other.
Everett: With Bea and I, the energy was there from day one. The distance was an issue when we
first met, but once we got back close enough to each other, it was like we never skipped a beat. When I moved to DC, and she traveled down from New York, it let me know she was serious about us being together, so after a couple of months. I asked her to be my girl, I couldn’t see myself without her.
DESCRIBE YOUR ENGAGEMENT SESSION. DID YOU HAVE A THEME? Our engagement session was at a beautiful, serene chapel at the top of a hill. We wanted to highlight our wedding colors so we went with full Mauve looks.
WHAT DID YOU DO ON YOUR FIRST DATE? Went to a live-action musical at Webster Hall in NYC. One of the best dates of my life.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE THING TO DO AS A COUPLE?
Cuddle up on the couch with our son and watch a good show.
HOW HAS WEDDING PLANNING BEEN SO FAR? Pretty smooth up until last week lol. It’s getting real now that we are nearing the 60-day mark.
TELL US WHAT YOU’RE LOOKING FORWARD TO MOST ON THE WEDDING DAY. Bea : I am honestly ready to see my son be the mirror
image of his dad in a matching tuxedo! They are literally my world.
Everett : I let her handle most of the planning it’s not really my thing. I’m mostly excited about us standing on the stage and saying I do. We have a beautiful family that’s based on love, I’m happy that the day is finally coming.
Both : Seeing each other as husband and wife for the first time!

Cydney+ Kailon
SHAKESPEARE’S RESTAURANT & PUB
ELLWOOD CITY, PA
WEDDING DATE: September 9, 2023
WEDDING LOCATION: Terrace at Hyatt House (Pittsburgh, PA)
OCCUPATIONS: (Kailon): Senior Account Service Manager | (Cydney): Director of Production and Client Acquisition
HOW THEY MET: Kailon and I met on August 28th, 2016 during a casual night out on the city’s South Side with mutual friends. Ironically, we both graduated from Penn State, were interested in each other, and unknowingly, convinced our friends to set up a neutral “date”. That date happened to be the very next day! We hung out again and exchanged numbers and began talking every day.
PROPOSAL STORY: Surrounded by our closest friends and loved ones, Kailon popped the question on Thursday, June 3rd in a beautiful garden in Phipps Conservatory. I was completely surprised! I thought we were headed to a photo shoot (which was an idea he secretly
planted in my head by having my normal photographers pitch it my way), and then a surprise family dinner I had scheduled to celebrate Kailon’s 30th Birthday. Needless to say, we canceled the reservations I made for his 30th birthday as he already booked reservations for us to celebrate the start of our new journey together!
ENGAGEMENT SESSION THEME: One of the first places Kailon and I visited together was Ireland. There was something so beautiful and captivating about the historic landmarks and castles there that gave a timeless and romantic feel. When we began thinking about our engagement photos we wanted them to have some sort of special nod to our first time out of the country. So I went to work on finding a castle near Pittsburgh, PA and stumbled upon Shakespeare’s Restaurant & Pub located in Ellwood City (just 45 minutes outside the city). It was absolutely STUNNING and the surrounding landscape was breathtaking. I wanted our attire to be similar to our wedding colors so we decided on 2 looks, one neutral look, and one black look.
It rained unexpectedly when the day called for a zero percent chance of rain. My fiance also had car trouble on the way to the shoot. The sky turned orange, pink, and purple, literally painting the most beautiful backdrop for our session. We were left with only one hour of daylight to shoot, but you wouldn’t be able to tell! With the help and encouragement of our super amazingly talented photography crew, everything turned out PERFECT!
FIRST DATE? Cydney : “Kailon surprised me by planning our first 5 dates only days after meeting. For our first official date, we went to see the Pittsburgh Pirates play and then went to one of our favorite restaurants, today: Burgatory! Kailon was secretly sold after I purchased him a Pirates shirt to match me to wear to the game.”
Kalion : “Up until that point I hadn’t owned any Pirates attire and I explained to Cydney that I’d never had a woman make a gesture like this on date number 1 — especially not when I’m the one who’s courting. We had a great time and even better conversation. Everything felt so natural, including our trip to our now favorite restaurant Burgatory following the baseball game.”
Cydney: “For the first 2 years, we were in a long-distance relationship as I was working as a news anchor in Bridgeport, West Virginia. Every week
How did you know your partner was the one?
I realized Kailon was the one when I recognized that I had a partner who was in the ring with me. Everyone knows that relationships are not easy and take lots of work. No matter what we have faced, Kailon has never shied away from putting in the work with me so that together we built something that would/could withstand any challenge that comes our way.
CydneyKailon would drive up in the middle of the night to see me off to my overnight shifts, and every weekend I would travel home to spend time with him. During that time we didn’t have a lot, but we created some of the most priceless memories together."
FAVORITE THING TO DO AS A COUPLE? Kailon and I LOVEEE food, so trying new restaurants is definitely a favorite. We also love traveling and seeing new places together. We are both music lovers so we also enjoy attending concerts together!
HOW HAS WEDDING PLANNING BEEN SO FAR? Wedding planning has been great thus far. We decided to have a longer engagement in order to allow more time to pay for the celebration, which was probably one of the best decisions we could have for us specifically. We are just a few months away and have secured all of the big stuff (venue, planner, caterer, photographer, videographer) and outside of the smaller details, we can now coast until the big day!
TELL US WHAT YOU'RE LOOKING FORWARD TO MOST ON THE WEDDING DAY: Kailon and I are really looking forward to just waking up on that day and basking in everything that it brings. We have been very careful in selecting our vendors and choosing our guests because we only want positive and genuine energy to surround us and our loved ones on that day. It feels like we have been planning for so long not to mention how taxing the process has been at times, to say the least.
While constantly preparing for our big day, we have made it a point not to lose sight of our love, making intentional efforts to enjoy ourselves, even with something so little as ice cream dates. This allows us to focus on what we’ve built and what we are continuing to build while confronting the many distractions that come from planning our big day. We truly believe that a great deal of peace will come once the process is over and we can settle into finally being Mr. & Mrs. Lyons! ”

Tickled Pink
themed bridal shower
PHOTOGRAPHED BY DANIELLE REAL PHOTOGRAPHY Text by Linda WallentineBRIDE-TO-BE: Courtney Hammad (Formerly Swanson) LOCATION: Washington D.C.
Love pink and all things girly? Aprill Gordon of Tulle & Tinsel Event Co. brought to life an elegant “Tickled Pink” themed bridal shower in Washington, D.C. for the bride-to-be, Courtney Hammad.
“This gorgeous bride LOVES pink and all things girly,” Aprill shares. “Instead of limiting ourselves to a single shade, I decided to design this event using multiple shades of pink. I then went to work including as many thoughtful details and textures as possible. The small guest count of 30 allowed us to really splurge and include luxurious personal touches.”
Some of those personal details included sophisticated floral arrangements, a lux chandelier, a custom pink cake, personalized hand-engraved pink champagne coupes, and more!
event highlights
Bride's favorite details: The vibrant tablecloths, floral china, and custom cookies at each place setting. They weren't just beautiful, they were actually delicious too! I'm a baker myself, so I was so impressed that I quickly asked the same baker to make cookies for my actual wedding too. I also loved the pink champagne coupes. My planner Aprill knew that I would love them!
Decor: I left the décor in the hands of our incredible wedding planner, Aprill Gordon of Tulle & Tinsel Event Co. She delivered the pink palette of my dreams.
Aprill Gordon of Tulle & Tinsel Event Co. on inspiration, design, & color story…
We originally curated a completely different look, but after seeing another planner use our original concept a mere two weeks before the event date, we decided to pivot. Creating unique events is always my goal, so I enjoyed the challenge of creating a completely different design at the last minute. I'm so glad this small hiccup happened because the bride-to-be and I loved the new design even MORE than the original! The two items that immediately struck me were the mauve chairs from White Glove Rentals and the Textured Water Lily Linen from BBJ La Tavola. I loved these items so much that I built the rest of the design around them. The finished look was classically beautiful, detailed, and luxurious.

I then went to work including as many thoughtful details and textures as possible. The small guest count of 30 allowed us to really splurge and include luxurious personal touches. From the plush chairs and delicate linens to the china and cake....there are so many lovely details that it's impossible for me to choose a single favorite. Some of the highlights include the individually wrapped hand-painted macaron as escort cards, personalized hand-engraved pink coupe glasses for each guest, and the beautiful floral cookies displayed on mini porcelain dessert stands at each place setting. The bride-to-be's gorgeous Teuta Matoshi gown was the cherry on top. She looked stunning!

CRYSTAL + JOSHUA
Power couple Crystal Williams-Foster and Joshua Foster said I-do in a glamorous royalinspired wedding week at the historic wedding venue, The Breakers, in Palm Beach Island, Florida.
While the pair originally had their sights set on a week-long destination wedding in Jamaica, they decided they wanted a venue with more character. Crystal shares, “I wanted that old, somewhat from the past look, but still modern, textured character feel.” With this in mind, their wedding planner, Oniki Occasions, helped them pivot to a new iconic venue: The Breakers.
The unique venue not only upheld Crystal’s royal aesthetics but also captured Joshua’s love of history and the couple’s shared desire to represent and showcase Black vendors. Joshua reflects, “One of the biggest things that I was excited about [was] to be able to be at a venue and have as many Black vendors as possible to be able to experience this place where not too many Black weddings happen.”
For the ceremony itself, Crystal envisioned her nuptials as a journey to becoming a queen. And her vendor team delivered! Wearing a completely custom gown designed by Esè Azenabor with floating pearl detailing, a corset waist, and a detachable skirt to show off her figure, Crystal effortlessly embodied the essence of royalty. Joshua looked equally dashing in a custom suit by Miguel Wilson.
Bearing witness to the couple’s entire wedding day, Oniki says, “[Their] wedding [was] totally befitting of the love [they] have for one another, and [Crystal] certainly [is] a queen.”
wedding style...
Crystal : I knew that I wanted a style of royalty. I knew that the venue could not look like a hotel. So if it couldn't look like a hotel, it had to be something of a building that looked as if it came from maybe old Europe, maybe a castle. So I knew I wanted that because again, sticking with that royalty theme, something that had character. So something that wasn't too modern, but still up to date.
So it still felt as if I was immersed in luxury, but it wasn't the common glass everywhere, which is what we live in. But I wanted something that had core bells and sconces and just character at every turn and arches and just old hardware that maybe is covered in brass now that looks new. And that's what I wanted. And I believe that The Breakers went above and beyond with that. The hotel is just gorgeous.
the dress...
From there I wanted a gown that matched that royalness and so I found the designer, Esè Azenabor, and even that again, I thought to myself: how do I get what's in my brain to her? When I went in, I told her what I thought I wanted. She told me, okay, you definitely need custom. Don't even look at what I have on the racks 'cause what you are trying to describe to me, you're not going to find over there.
And she took out a pencil and paper and she let me just try to brain dump everything that was inside of my head using words that I'm sure she probably was like, that is not what it's called. And she still was just drawing as I was describing. And then when she finished drawing, she turned it around and I was like, that's it. That is the dress. So I wanted something that was going to give me the royalness that I was looking
for. So something big and puffy, but it can come off because I wanted to be able to still show my figure, I was working hard. So I'm like, I got to be able to show this figure off, so whatever big and puffy you give me for the princess and queen look, I need that to be able to come off.
And then from there, I wanted pearls. I knew that I wanted pearls. I see a lot of crystals and all this other stuff. And I said, "No. To me, if we're sticking with the royalty, kind of old royalty at that, pearls are a statement of that. And so I wanted them everywhere and I wanted them to look like they were floating on my body." When I said that to her, she said, "Oh, okay." Like, don't just put pearls on a dress for me. No, no, no. I need them to look like it's an illusion that they're just on my skin. And enough cleavage where it's still a little sexy, but it's not too risque. I said, 'cause my husband's mom will look at me like I'm crazy. She said, "Okay, I can do that."
And for it to be, I knew I wanted the dress to be corset because I'm going to need a little extra pull-in, which she did. And I mean, the dress just was perfect.
favorite accessory...
I would say my overall favorite piece, believe it or not, would have to be my veil. I wasn't even going to get a veil, I thought that they were overpriced for this thing that was going on my head. When I put the dress on and I tried it on with her, I said, "No, it needs a veil." And the veil was custom-made as well with the same pearls throughout and the same shine. And it was perfect to the point when it arrived, I was literally just walking around the house with the veil on. I think we know for sure if we don't wear the dress again in 10 years, we're definitely wearing the veil. The veil will be here!
"To find a man that was marrying me and marrying my child and publicly declaring that in front of everyone, you can't put a price on that. It's a moment that I will never forget." - CRYSTAL
best memories...
Crystal : When Joshua surprised us with vows for Jeremiah. When I watch it today, I still cry. When we watched the tape, everyone still cries. Jeremiah still cries. It's just one of those moments that I didn't expect. And so it just solidified again 'cause I had so many moms ask me, as a single mom, like, "How did you know he was the one? How could you trust him with your kid?" There's so much that goes into marrying someone when you already have a child that you have to deal with at home and with the child.
And to find a man that was marrying me and marrying my child and publicly declaring that in front of everyone, you can't put a price on that. It's a moment that I will never forget. It's a moment that still makes me emotional. And it was so beautiful to see him profess pretty much his love for him as a father and all the things that he desired for him as a father. Especially knowing that even though he has a dad, he only sees him in summer. So this is a man that is coming in and truly stepping into that father role for him. It was amazing.
Joshua: I feel like the wedding day was such a blur. Not in a bad way, but like there wasn't a specific favorite memory until after I was able to really look back and watch the video, which Bridges Cinema did
an amazing job with because I feel like I didn't miss any moment after seeing all of that.
So I think after going back and looking at the video, the one that Crystal shared was my favorite memory 'cause it was just great seeing everyone cry along with me. It made it not seem weird that it was just me all up there crying. But I think, I don't know, except for that moment, of course, being able to say I do, and it was the time that everyone was able to just witness and be there for us.
It's just kind of looking back and just seeing all of the joy that was going on that day for Crystal, for Jeremiah, and then just for everyone that was there as well. It made all the back and forth that Crystal had worth it. It made all of the money spent well worth it. And just seeing that it turned out in a way that even I'm sure Crystal didn't even imagine that it could turn out. So I think it was just overall being able to sit back and watch all of those moments together – that was really it for me.
wedding advice...
Joshua: I think, well, one, easy for the groom-to-be is just to be quiet and listen to what your bride-to-be says. But I think the biggest thing is to get yourself an Oniki. That helps out a whole lot.
I think the biggest thing for me, the reason why that's important is that I'm very organized, a process-driven person. And things would be absolutely crazy if it wasn't organized. And I was fully under the impression that I was totally capable of doing that myself to start with. I still believe that I would've been capable of staying organized, but it would've driven me absolutely crazy, and then the actual wedding itself, of course, I mean we were never naive enough to think that we could plan the wedding itself, but I think for me it was like, "Oh, we don't really need a wedding planner until we figure out exactly where we wanted to get married and who we want the vendors to be.
And then it could just be planned from there. So I think that the whole process
beforehand, yes, could have been done, but it wouldn't have been done as well as it was and as smoothly. So it's definitely important to stay organized and if it is in your budget, which I think it should be, definitely hire a planner.
Crystal: For me, I would say, I wish going back when we ate dinner, we would've eaten it outside of the room. Just so we could have that one little moment secluded to ourselves. So that would be my advice. If you could find a moment throughout the timeline to say, "Okay, for 15 minutes we are going to be here. Just for us to say, “how's it going for you?” alone, I think I would recommend that.
Also, when you're picking your venue, try to pick a venue that possibly specializes in weddings. It was amazing to know that The Breakers had people to help us through the entire wedding routine and processes the day of.

Extra details: Choreographed dance with Jeremiah (the bride’s son) by a TikTok dancer. Prudence & Chris (Bride & Groom attendant that helped throughout the day).
Advice from the bride: “If you’re going as grand as we did with a wedding week, try to give people enough time to plan, and then put money into your budget where you can to help your bridesmaids. So just be mindful that people are helping you and they want to be there for you, but try to cover as much as you can for them.”

+TRAE
ATLANTA, GA | JULY 23, 2022
PHOTOGRAPHED BY ELIZABETH AUSTIN PHOTOGRAPHY
Dominique and Trae first met at a mutual friend's birthday party in May 2020 - socially distanced of course! And while the pandemic was at the forefront of everyone’s minds, these two quickly found themselves focused on love.
One year later, Trae proposed over an intimate dinner followed by a surprise gathering at their best friend's home. The next day they flew to Ft. Washington, Maryland, to celebrate their engagement with friends and family.
Their 2022 nuptials at the Atlanta History Center were everything classic and timeless with gold decor details and dramatic florals in hues of red and pink. The couple was also very intentional about keeping God and their love for one another at the center of their special day. Dominique shares, “We wrote our own vows and wove scripture into every part of our ceremony.”
At the end of the day, beyond all the special details, when looking back at their wedding day, Dominique admits: “...[I] married my best friend and that’s all I needed to make the day special.”
wedding highlights
Bridesmaids & groomsmen gifts: Bridesmaids received personalized Mantra Mugs (a black woman-owned business in Atlanta!) and their jewelry and makeup for the wedding. Trae gave his groomsmen personalized travel watch cases and cigars!
Gifts for one another: They were each other's gifts!
Ceremony entrance song: The bride walked down the aisle to “At Last” by Etta James and they walked out as husband and wife to “Find Someone Like You” by Snoh Aalegra.
First dance song: “If this world were mine” by Luther Vandross & Cheryl Lynn
wedding advice
Keep your love at the center and prepare for the marriage above everything! The wedding was amazing and the best day of our lives but if every detail had fallen through - which trust me, PLENTY went wrong on our day - I still married my best friend and that’s all I needed to make the day special.

Advice for brides: Appoint a good team! Choose the people that support you the most. On your special day & those leading up to it, they will be your biggest protectors, servants & support system. From your bridesmaids to your planner. You are only as strong as your team on that day!

While out with family and friends, Bree got the sweetest double surprise when what she thought was a celebration of her boyfriend's birthday in Miami turned out to be a surprise proposal! His birthday celebration turned into their engagement party! Can you say the best day EVER!!
The couple’s golden hour Miami wedding captured by Kareem Virgo featured the coziest get-readywith-me journey with Bree’s bridesmaids who had their own personalized slippers along with their own comfy PJ sets, and Ahmad’s groomsmen wore their own coordinating tuxedos by celebrity designer Miguel Wilson.
For their wedding day, the couple’s florist Petal Productions created a spectacular display of sumptuous roses with a dazzling floral ceiling installation that was a waterfall of colors that echoed throughout the whole ceremony. We could totally spill the beans even more about the duo’s day but we would rather show you Breionne and Ahmad’s sensational ceremony designed by Kia Marie Events.

ABIGAIL + RAMON
EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ
JULY 20TH, 2022
Abigail and Ramon’s love story began with a simple, wholesome DM: “Your smile makes me smile.”
As their conversations deepened, they learned that they both shared many of the same cultural values, leading them to go on their first date.
For their first date, the couple went to a Jamaican restaurant called “The Door.” This restaurant was very special to Ramon, as his family celebrated many special events there. As the night progressed they both realized that they liked each other even more in person and shared similar life goals.
Ramon surprised Abigail by proposing during a family photo shoot with her mom and sister. When the group photos were complete, the photographer held Abigail’s attention while Ramon got down on one knee behind her. As Abigail turned around, the photographer was able to capture the special moment.
Their regal and elegant fairytale wedding featured all-white florals, refined decor, and an exquisite venue that perfectly matched the couple's wedding style.
wedding highlights
Gifts for your bridesmaids & groomsmen: Bridesmaids received custom bridesmaid proposal boxes (made by the bride) with items they would reuse on the wedding day. The groomsmen received a pocket watch with their names engraved on it. They also received a gold pin for their suits that was their first name and last name initials.
Gifts for one another: Abigail was nice enough to gift me a Movado watch. I gifted her a beautiful Luxury Honeymoon at the Tamarind Hill Resort In Antigua.
Favorite menu items: The food was catered by our wedding venue Park Chateau. We enjoyed the service and food they catered for that night. We had the opportunity to participate in their food-tasting event and picked our favorite dishes. On the day of the wedding, our favorite dishes were the Hickory Smoked Barbecued Brisket of Beef (Served in a Sweet Barbeque Sauce), Chicken Chateau (Boneless Breast of Capon Chicken with Mushroom Stuffing and a Truffle Sauce), and the Chateau Salad (Baby Field Greens Topped with Toasted Walnuts & Gorgonzola Cheese, Garnished with a Roasted Pear and Dressed with a Champagne Walnut Vinaigrette).
Wedding flowers: No one could prepare me for how expensive flowers are. However, with the right floral team from Ritz-Walton Collection, I did not have to sacrifice style for my budget. Although I went with budget-friendly options like adding artificial flowers with fresh flowers. Choosing a backdrop with silk flowers from Royal Backdrops. Also, I learned a tip to make sure my ceremony arrangements could be repurposed for the reception.
Ceremony entrance song: “Till Death Do Us Part” by Brian Nhira
First dance song: “Made by God” by Rutshelle Guillaume
Advice from the Bride: Identify specific details that are important to you and your husband and those that are simply not. Enjoy the day. It goes by fast. My husband and I spent months planning the wedding, and the months of planning were over in a couple of hours. Stay in the moment and just enjoy that you are getting married to the love of your life. Regardless of how well you plan the wedding and schedule it to perfection, just realize things will not go exactly according to plan. You should take that into consideration and allocate extra time for each activity in your day, so you are not just running around frantic from one activity to the next. When this does not go according to plan, take a deep breath and remember the big picture the planning is done. Now it's time to enjoy yourself. That will also show in your pictures and video that you were having a great time.

CHANNING + HERBERT
CARY, NORTH CAROLINA
PHOTOGRAPHED BY JAO PHOTOGRAPHY
The summer nuptials of Channing and Herbert Tatum in Cary, NC had family and friends toasting the newlyweds as they were treated to a timeless black and white-themed wedding with a bit of Southern flare thrown into the mix.
The couple, who initially met at a high school party, got to know one another after Channing’s inquisitiveness caused her to reach out to Herbert on social media. While remaining friends throughout their college years, the couple’s romance blossomed and in 2020, Herbert popped the question at Channing’s birthday party surrounded by friends who brought the most hype proposal day energy!
For the wedding, the bride wore designer Ese Azenabor’s show-stopping strapless deep v-neck mermaid gown with a figure-hugging beaded bodice and detachable train accompanied by her bridal party whose gowns were by Dazzle Couture and The Jessica Angel Collection. Herbert’s wedding day attire featured a classic Black and White tuxedo from The Suit Brother and his groomsmen were styled in looks from Amazon.
The couple’s guests arrived at the black and white themed evening ceremony and reception which featured a confetti cannon, bottle girls, and the super thoughtful late-night to-go boxes of Bojangles that were given to their reception guests as a sweet nod to their Southern ceremony.
"Our guests walked into a ceremony draped in white and re-entered the room for the reception with a luxe all-black atmosphere that created a dark and moody moment with thousands of white flowers to keep it light and airy at our guest tables." - Channing

SIMONE + LEVONTE
MONTEGO
BAY, JAMAICA
APRIL 22, 2022
PHOTOGRAPHED BY LINDA MCQUEEN PHOTOGRAPHY
Text by Linda Wallentine
Simone & Levonte’s love story began on Labor Day weekend at a restaurant almost 10 years ago. Simone recalls, “He approached my table, introduced himself, told me I was beautiful, and walked away.” He didn’t even ask for her number. “He was being ‘cool,’” she says, laughing. When they were leaving (ironically at the same time), Levonte finally asked for her number. With some encouragement from her friends, Simone obliged and two days later they were on their first date. A year of friendship followed, building a steady foundation of love, laughs, and shared experiences before they decided to give each other a real chance and made things official. They’ve been together ever since!
After purchasing their first home together in August 2020, the couple hosted an intimate housewarming party on Labor Day weekend where Levonte surprised Simone with a new car and a ring! Hidden in the glove compartment of her new dream ride, she found a blue box. When she turned around, Levonte was on one knee! “Not only did I get my beautiful car, my best friend was asking me to marry him. I was on a complete high. I was so happy and blessed to have our family and close friends there to witness this beautiful moment with us.”
The couple tied the knot two years later in a stunning destination wedding in Montego Bay, Jamaica. Captured by Linda McQueen Photography and brought to life by Oh Niki Occasions, they couldn’t have asked for a more perfect day!

Advice for couples...
The best wedding advice that we could give any engaged couple would be, "Carpe Diem."
The entire wedding process and wedding day will fly by. We would encourage all couples to enjoy every bit of it. Slow down even if it's for just a second during your wedding day and take it all in, with just the two of you. When they say your day is going to be over in a blink of an eye, that is beyond true. So slow down even if only for a second during your big day.
The second piece of advice I would give any engaged couple would be to invest in a wedding planner. No matter how small or grand you want your day to be, having a wedding planner will save you so much in the end; financially, mentally, and emotionally. Having Oniki Hardtman of Oh Niki Occasions as our wedding planner was the best decision that we made early in our planning process.
HEATHER + OLU
WASHINGTON, DC
JUNE 04, 2022
PHOTOGRAPHED BY NANA ANNAN PHOTOGRAPHY & TRENE’ FORBES
Text by Linda Wallentine
Nearly 9 years ago, Olu and Heather met by chance. Both living in St. Louis, Missouri, they caught each other’s attention at a mutual friend’s party. However, neither one of them made a move. They were both “playing it cool.” Shortly after, they met again and went on two dates back to back. And so their journey began!
Knowing they wanted to spend forever together, Olu surprised Heather with a birthday dinner proposal. He made the night even more special by inviting their friends and family to join in on the surprise. When he dropped to one knee, of course, she said yes!
Tying the knot on June 4, 2022, in Washington DC, Olu and Heather were so excited to simply be surrounded by loved ones again. Heather shared, “I was brought to tears when I looked into the crowd at our reception and saw all our family and friends. The COVID-19 lockdown kept us all apart. It was amazing to see everyone come together to celebrate our love story.”

"We are a multicultural couple. Olukayode is Yoruba (Nigerian) and I am AfricanAmerican. We held a two-day wedding. On Friday, we celebrated Olukayode's culture and had a traditional wedding. It was so fun to see all of our friends and family in traditional Yoruba outfits! On Saturday, we honored my roots by jumping the broom."

For Destiny and Eddie, being set up on a blind date by a pair of their friends led to lifelong love! After a year and a half of dating, Eddie popped the question through a cute scavenger hunt with close friends and family incorporating all of the places that had meaning to them.
Their wedding was, in Destiny’s words: “a modern-day fairytale.” The couple’s dreamy black and whitethemed nuptials were set in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, at the luxurious Crystal Ballroom BeachPlace venue. Designed by Lux Lifestyle Events LLC and captured by REEM Photography, their wedding featured a live violinist, a unique bride and groom photo shoot, and a grand reception room reveal.
“It was just beyond magical,” Destiny shares. “I would not have envisioned our wedding any other way and it was perfect.”
