Hispano-Suiza Carmen Boulogne MY20

Page 1

The rebirth of an iconic Spanish brand Hispano Suiza Fábrica de Automóviles S.A. was originally established in Barcelona in 1904 by my great-grandfather Damián Mateu accompanied by the engineer Marc Birkigt; together they created this iconic Spanish brand. My grandfather, Miguel Mateu later took control of the company, continuing the production of prestigious, top-of-the-range cars. After his death, his daughter Carmen Mateu —my mother— was appointed president and continued her father’s work, keeping the essence of the brand alive through events, exhibitions, rallies, and conferences, as well as book and magazine publications. From 1904 to 1946, Hispano Suiza created a series of luxury high-performance vehicles, manufacturing 12,000 cars. In total, four generations of the Suqué Mateu family have preserved this historic name. Over 70 years later, in 2019, I had the honor of presenting the return of the Hispano Suiza brand to the world with the Carmen, a 100% electric vehicle, designed, developed, and manufactured in Barcelona, maintaining the original DNA of elegance, exclusivity, sportiness, and innovation. This year 2020 at the Geneva motor show, we presented the Carmen Boulogne, an evolved version of the vehicle we presented in 2019. The Boulogne concept dates back to 1921 and the George Boillot Cup, which had Hispano Suiza competing with five improved versions of the company’s H6 Coupé. The endurance race saw the competitors fight for victory for more than 3 and a half hours on the roads around the French city of Boulogne. Hispano Suiza achieved three consecutive victories with drivers André Dubonnet (1921), Paul Bablot (1922), and Léonce Garnier (1923) driving specially modified versions of the Hispano Suiza H6. In this book, we want to capture the values and qualities of the Boulogne concept from 1921 until today with this version of the Carmen Boulogne. Miguel Suqué Mateu Hispano Suiza President
