Penela é marcada pela forte herança histórica e cultural, assente hoje no seu património, de elevado valor, quer pela riqueza das suas formas, quer pelo seu estado de preservação. Salientamos o Castelo de Penela, uma fortaleza medieval do séc. XI; a Villa romana do Rabaçal datada do século IV d.c., onde os motivos figurativos dos mosaicos e algumas composições geométricas e vegetalistas são quase únicos no género; a Igreja da Misericórdia marco religioso da segunda metade do séc. XVI; o Pelourinho de Podentes, estilo manuelino, é o maior fuste de um só bloco, datável desta época, encontrado em Portugal e o Germanelo, castelo típico do período da Reconquista, de onde se avista uma paisagem deslumbrante sobre o vale do Rabaçal.
/// The development of any territory must forcefully take into consideration the acknowledgment of its patrimony. Penela stands out for its rich cultural and historical heritage, based on its wealthy patrimony, evident in its different forms and state of preservation. One highlight is Penela’s Castle, a medieval 11th century fortress. Others include the Roman Villa of Rabaçal, dating back to the 4th century ad, where the figured patterns of the mosaics and some geometric and vegetable shaped compositions are almost unique in kind; the Misericordia’s church – a religious mark from the second half of the 16th century; the Pelourinho in Podentes, built in Manuelino style, is the biggest carving from a single bloc of stone found in Portugal, it is also from the same period. The Germanelo, a typical castle from the Reconquest period from where one can enjoy a spectacular view of Rabaçal valley.

SMARTES Casa das Indústrias Criativas // Apostando numa estratégia de valorização do Centro Histórico da Vila de Penela, uma vila com um património notável fundada ainda antes da nacionalidade, a SmARTES – casa das indústrias criativas é um pólo dinamizador do centro histórico de Penela estando associado à potenciação das indústrias criativas e ao aparecimento de novos negócios nestas áreas. Nomeadamente: design, teatro, música, arte, multimédia, publicidade, arquitectura, pintura, escultura, novas tecnologias educação, etc. Dispõe de 7 espaços de gabinete (de 18 a 25 m2) a preços muito competitivos. A sala polivalente destinar-se-á sobretudo a gravações, exposições, apresentações, etc.
House of Creative Industries /// By focusing on a strategy centered on adding value to the Historical Centre of Penela, a town with a remarkable patrimony that originates to even before the time Portugal was an independent country, Smartes – house of creative industries, is central to making the historical centre of Penela more dynamic. It is associated to exploring the potential of creative industries and the creation of new businesses in this area: design, theatre, music, art, multimedia, publicity, architecture, painting, sculpture, new educational technologies, etc.
Mini-Habitat // Tem como principal objectivo apoiar a inovação, competitividade e empreendedorismo nos sectores estratégicos do Concelho de Penela, apostando na renovação e dinamização do tecido empresarial através do apoio à génese de micro e pequenas empresas, pretendendo ser uma extensão do HIESE. Dispõe de 5 espaços de gabinete (de 16 a 24 m2) e presta serviço de incubação virtual, ambos a preços muito competitivos. /// Mini-Habitat’s main objective is to support the innovation, competitiveness and entrepreneurship in the strategic sectors of Penela’s municipality. It focuses on the renovation of the industrial fabric through the support of the creation of micro and small companies that intent to be an extension of the HIESE. Através do acesso a redes de networking e através de uma parceria que pretende gerar uma rede de conhecimento entre o Sistema Cientifico e Tecnológico, universidades e tecido empresarial que tenha como objectivo principal o investimento e a aposta em Penela e nos seus recursos e sectores estratégicos, o HIESE pretende ser uma referência de inovação e de conhecimento em rede. O HIESE, para além do espaço físico de 2 pisos que permitirá fixar 15 novas empresas, dispõe de 7,2 ha de área agrícola e 28 ha de área florestal para actividades de investigação e para testes de novos produtos ou serviços.
Through the access to networking and a partnership that intends to generate a knowledge network between the Scientific and Technological System, universities and business fabric that has as its main objective investing in Penela and its resources and strategic sectors, HIESE aims to be a reference in innovation, knowledge and networking. Besides the two floors that will allow 15 new companies to have their headquarters there, HIESE has 7.2 ha of agricultural land and 28ha of forest land for research and for the testing of new products or services.

Smart Rural Living Lab, a member of ENoLL (European Network of Living Labs), values the rural aspect of the municipality as a huge competitive advantage that wants to put new products or services to test, through direct field application and with a constant interaction with the final user. These should contribute to the territorial development of similar regions to Penela and the improvement of the quality of life of those areas where innovation is the key to success. // A Rede das Aldeias do Xisto é um projecto de desenvolvimento sustentável, de âmbito regional, liderado pela ADXTUR- Agência para o Desenvolvimento Turístico das Aldeias do Xisto, em parceria com 26 Municípios da Região Centro e com mais de 70 operadores privados que actuam no território. A ADXTUR congrega assim as vontades públicas e privadas de uma Região, que se revêem na gestão partilhada de uma marca, na promoção conjunta de um território, na criação de riqueza através da oferta de serviços turísticos e, finalmente, na preservação da cultura e do património do mundo rural beirão. Pelo desenvolvimento integrado do território, contra a desertificação humana e o esquecimento. O Município de Penela faz parte da rede, onde integra a Ferraria de S. João como uma das aldeias da rede. /// The network of schist villages is a sustainable development project of a regional scope governed by ADXTUR – Agência para o Desenvolvimento Turistico das Aldeias de Xisto, in partnership with 26 municipalities of the Central Region and includes over 70 private operators that are active in the territory. ADXTUR brings together the public and private ambitions of a region that are able to share the management of a brand in order to jointly promote a region, the creation of wealth through the provision of touristic services and also through the preservation of culture and patrimony of the Beirão rural world. Centro de Estudos de História Local e Regional Salvador Dias Arnaut // O Centro de Estudos de História Local e Regional Salvador Dias Arnaut nasceu da vontade e empenho das três partes envolvidas: o Municipio de Penela, a Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Coimbra e a família do historiador penelense. Espaço de inquestionável valor e interesse para a História Local e Regional, uma referência, a nível nacional, no estudo da temática histórica local, alberga dois importantes fundos bibliográficos: o imenso e riquíssimo espólio de monografias da biblioteca particular do Professor Doutor Salvador Dias Arnaut e publicações de todos os municípios portugueses. /// The Salvador Dias Arnaut Centre of Local and Regional History Studies was created due to the willpower and commitment of three entities: the Municipality of Penela, the Letters Faculty of Coimbra and the family Penela’s historian. It is a place of unquestionable value and interest to the local and regional history, a reference on a national level in what concerns local history. It is the home of two important bibliographical libraries: the immense collection of monographs from the private library of Doutor Salvador Dias Arnaut and the publications of every Portuguese municipality.

Os carsos que integram o Sistema Espeleológico do Dueça são o expoente máximo de um exemplo onde o Homem deve manter e preservar estes ecossistemas.
