We are starting the new year by throwing our doors open to culturewithanewExhibitionCycle,whichcanbevisitedatthree different municipal venues: the Municipal Gallery, the Centro de Artes e Ofícios (Art and Trade Centre) and the Alportel Museum Centre.

In this year of renewed hope and the heightening of human values,wearechallengingpeopletoexperiencethesefeelingsof proximity and love for their neighbours through art; art that can beappreciatedataround20exhibitionsbyartistsfromSãoBrás, and from across the region and the country, as well as from abroad, who have chosen São Brás de Alportel as the setting in whichtosharetheircreativity.

Throughout the year, paintings, tile art, photography, wood transformation, decorative pieces in cement and the enhancement of the history of the people of São Brás, as well as many other examples of creative artwork, will bring life to these artgalleriesthatpromoteunityandnewexperiences.

Os Amigos da Filatelia apresentam uma exposição que alia o colecionismo à gastronomia para despertar os sentidos. Atividades muitasvezesencaradascomopassatemposequetêmemcomumo pegar em diferentes objetos ou alimentos para lhes dar uma nova identidade,umnovosentido!

A exposição tem como tema principal um conjunto de coleções sobre gastronomia, no entanto, e tal como a gastronomia é promotora de convívio à mesa, também esta exposição irá apresentar outras coleções que prometem cativar os sentidos dos visitantes.

AUniversidadedoAlgarveéaúnicauniversidadeportuguesacriada por Lei da Assembleia da República Facto que motivou a inauguração desta exposição em maio de 2019 na casa que a viu nascereondefoisatisfeitaumaambiçãodosalgarvios. Esta exposição dá a conhecer a história da UALg. E, como a história de qualquer instituição é feita por pessoas e factos, são aqui retratados momentos importantes, desde a sua génese até à atualidade, dando a conhecer ainda as linhas de investigação e o trabalho desenvolvido ao nível do combate às alterações climáticas.

The University of Algarve is the only Portuguese university to have beencreatedbyalawpassedbytheAssemblyoftheRepublic.This was the motivation behind the inauguration of this exhibition in May 2019 in the place that saw it come into being and where the ambitionsoftheAlgarvepeoplewererealised. This exhibition tells the University of Algarve's story. And, since the story of any institution is made up of people and facts, important moments are portrayed in this exhibition, from the university's inception through to the present day Visitors will also be able to learn about the research being carried out at UAlg, as well as its effortsinthefightagainstclimatechange.

Peter de Jong é formado em Arte Terapia e estudou diferentes filosofias sobre a essência da vida cuja busca expressa na sua arte. Nesta exposição apresenta obras onde representa de forma divertidaaideiadequeumcontextotemsempreumimpactosobre comoaformaéentendida.

Radicado em Tavira, o artista inglês Chris Alford (Alfora) tem formação em Belas Artes e um mestrado em História. Nesta exposição aborda a Escrita do Sudoeste, inscrições da Idade do Ferro, gravadas em Pedra, encontradas no Sudoeste da Península Ibérica.

Peter de Jong trained in Art Therapy and studied different philosophies about the essence of life, a search which he expresses inhisart.Inthisexhibition,hepresentsworkswhereheportrays,in an amusing way, the idea that a context always has an impact on theunderstandingoftheshape.

EnglishartistChrisAlford(akaAlfora)livesinTavira.HestudiedFine Art and has a Master's degree in History. In this exhibition he addressesSouthwestScript,Iron-Ageinscriptionsonstone,foundin thesouth-westoftheIberianPeninsula.

José Manuel Belchior and Vítor Lourenço are two collectors from São Brás who share the same passion for the history of their home town. It was this same passion that gave rise to their desire to organise this exhibition. Among the exhibits on display are various items which, through suitable presentation and contextualisation, tellusaboutdetailsandpeoplethatthemore“institutional”formof history fails to mention. Yet they are enriching and enlightening about lifestyles in bygone days while also promoting reflection on thepresentandthefuture.

NascidanaÁustria,DorisOgrintirouocursodeestilistanaEscolade Moda de Munique. Trabalhou na área até há cerca de 30 anos, quando se mudou para Portugal onde começou a trabalhar como tradutora.

Aolongodavida,desenvolveuummodometiculosodeobservação ecaptaçãodabelezadelocais,pessoasedanaturezaquecomeçou acapturaratravésdafotografia.

Nesta exposição, dá a conhecer diferentes prismas, ambientes, contrastes e o misticismo da cultura chinesa através dos exemplos deHong-KongeGuilinquevisitou.

Austrian-born Doris Ogrin studied fashion design at the Munich FashionSchool.SheworkedinthefielduntilshemovedtoPortugal, some30yearsago,andbeganworkingasatranslator.

Throughout her life, she has developed a meticulous way of observing and capturing the beauty of places, people and nature, whichshebegandoingthroughphotography

In this exhibition, she shows different perspectives, environments, contrasts and the mysticism of Chinese culture using the examples ofHongKongandGuilin,whichshehasvisited.

Natural de Querença, Henrique Silva apresenta o conjunto de esculturas “O No/u Alto” onde explora a beleza feminina e as diferentes linguagens do corpo. As obras deste artista, pintor e poeta da pedra nascem da ação modeladora consciente e inconsciente.

A arquiteta de design olhanense, Marisa Patrício desde muito apresenta o conjunto de pinturas “Lugares”. A sua pintura é uma janela aberta a outras recriações artísticas, despertando diferentes sensações naqueles que visualizam a sua obra que combina o Abstrato-Figurativo.

Design architect Marisa Patrício, from Olhão, has long been exhibiting a set of her paintings called “Places”. Her painting is an open window to other artistic recreations, awakening different sensationsinthosewhocontemplateherwork,whichcombinesthe abstractwiththefigurative.

Ana Martins, natural do Algarve, autodidata, apresenta-nos, mais uma vez, pinturas em acrílico sobre madeira reciclada, de forma rústicaedivertida.

João Custódio, algarvio, apresenta-nos o seu gosto pela madeira, atravésdediversasmadeirasesculpidaspelagoiva.

In this cycle, we will once again be welcoming artists Ana Martins and João Custódio for a joint exhibition of paintings and woodcarvings.

Algarve-born and self-taught, Ana Martins is once again exhibiting paintingsinacryliconrecycledwood,inarusticandamusingway. Also Algarve-born, João Custódio demonstrates his love of wood by exhibiting various wooden sculptures carved using a gouge.

Uma exposição que apresenta uma manifestação cultural enraizada e acarinhada pela comunidade são-brasense. Tradição secular única, de beleza ímpar, que envolve a comunidade e que atingeoseuaugenaProcissãoondeosandoresdãolugaràsflorese aos cânticos a Cristo Ressuscitado ecoados pelos homens da terra: “Ressuscitou como disse! Aleluia! Aleluia! Aleluia!”, enquanto erguemmajestosastochasartísticasdefloresnaturais.

A procissão percorre os tapetes floridos, com cores vibrantes e aromas primaveris que se estendem por mais de um quilómetro e quesãoumex-líbris.

This exhibition presents a cultural demonstration that is deeplyrooted in and much-loved by the São Brás community An ancient and uniquely beautiful tradition which involves the whole community and reaches its climax with a procession in which the littersgivewaytoflowersandthelocalssinghymnsinhonourofthe resuscitated Christ: “He has risen as I said! Hallelujah! Hallelujah!

Hallelujah!” while holding aloft majestic artistic torches made of freshflowers.

The procession takes place along the town streets, which are laid withmagnificentcarpetsofflowersstretchingforoverakilometre. Their vibrant colours and springtime fragrances are a hallmark of theevent.

NaturaldeAlbufeira,AnaSotaéumaartistaplásticaautodidataque gosta de despertar emoções através dos seus trabalhos Frequentou vários cursos de gravura, desenho e pintura em Macau (Ásia)eemVarese(Itália).

A artista explora muito o monocromático e utiliza quase sempre acrílico sobre tela e vários tipos de madeira e MDF. Sempre com muita cor, gosta do jogo entre o brilhante e o opaco; a utilização de cores fortes e a repetição por vezes minimalista do jogo de cores permitem-nosentrarnumuniversosimples,masvibrante.

Albufeira-born Ana Sota is a self-taught artist who enjoys stirring people's emotions with her work. She has taken various courses in engraving,drawingandpaintinginMacao(Asia)andVarese(Italy). The artist is a keen explorer of monochromatic art and almost always uses acrylic on canvas and various types of wood and MDF. When she works with colour, she likes the play between the shiny and the opaque; her use of strong colours and the sometimes minimalistrepetitionoftheplayofcoloursallowustoenterasimple butvibrantuniverse.

Natural de São Romão, José Guerreiro, começou a trabalhar aos 11 anoscomocarpinteiroaprendiz.Numaalturademenostrabalho,o patrão incentivou a explorar outra vertente da carpintaria e começouafazercarrinhosemcasa.Passatempoquetevesucessoe peloqualrecebeencomendashá30anos.

Há 8 anos, participou na Feira da Serra e deu asas à imaginação e à criatividade, viajando pelos tempos de infância para criar brinquedos de madeira. Agora, já reformado, o passatempo ocupa osseusdiasinspirando-senavilaenasmemóriasdeinfância.

José Guerreiro was born in São Romão and began working as a carpenter's apprentice when he was 11 years old. During slacker periods, his boss encouraged him to explore another facet of carpentry and he began making little wooden cars. His hobby turnedouttobeagreatsuccessashehasbeenreceivingordersfor 30yearsnow

Eight years ago, he participated in the Upland Fair, giving free rein to his imagination and creativity, and travelling back in time to his youth to create wooden toys. Now retired, he still enjoys his hobby and takes his inspiration from the town and his childhood memories.

Natural de Tavira, a professora e pintora Paula Rodrigues sempre manifestou interesse pelas artes, tendo participado em vários projetos de escola, um deles premiado a nível nacional, com pinturasdecorativaseesculturasembetão. Atualmente, realiza pinturas a óleo para particulares e explora outras vertentes de artes e ofícios, como por exemplo bijuteria em materiaistradicionaisenãotradicionais.

Nesta exposição, apresenta telas criadas através de momentos de inspiração poética relacionadas com a natureza e em especial o mar,ondepredominaoazul.

Tavira-born teacher and painter Paula Rodrigues has always been interested in the arts. At school, she participated in a variety of projects, one of which won a national prize, with decorative paintingandsculpturesinconcrete.

She currently does oil paintings for private customers and explores other facets of arts and crafts, such as jewellery-making with traditionalandnon-traditionalmaterials. In this exhibition, she presents canvases created through moments of poetic inspiration related to the nature and in special the sea, where thepredominantcolourisblue.

Natural de São Romão, a educadora de infância Tânia Madeira sempre gostou de artes plásticas. Gosto que tem desenvolvido na sua área profissional e que, durante a quarentena, ganhou nova dimensão. Criou peças com materiais que tinha em casa, entre os quais, um saco de cimento-cola com o qual produziu vasos, porta velas, trava-portas, bases de incenso e outras peças decorativas e utilitárias. Peças onde concilia a simplicidade ao natural e rústico e que tenta personalizar para cada cliente e que agora são dadas a conhecernestaexposiçãodoseuprojeto“ArtecomGarra”.

Tânia Madeira, a nursery school teacher from São Romão, has always liked the plastic arts. Her job has further developed this liking, which has gained in importance during lockdown. She has createdpiecesusingmaterialsshehadathome,includingasackof cement that she used to make vases, candle-holders, doorstops, incense-holdersandotherdecorativeandusefulpieces.Herworkis simple,naturalandrusticindesignandshetriestopersonaliseitfor each customer. Now visitors can admire her creations in this exhibitionfromherproject“ArtwithGuts”

Natural de São Bartolomeu de Messines, a ceramista Lília Lopes começou a dedicar-se à cerâmica como uma atividade terapêutica.

O que começou como sendo uma terapia transformou-se em profissãocomacriaçãodoAtelierDoisLLem1996.

O "bichinho" de meter as mãos no barro é o resultado de ter crescido numa família de doceiras e de tanto ver, experimentar e fazerostípicosbolosdeamêndoadoAlgarve.

O que mais a entusiasma e motiva é a criatividade e o desafio da transformação,oRENASCERdamatéria.

Ceramic artist Lília Lopes was born in São Bartolomeu de Messines and began focusing on ceramic art as therapeutic activity. What began as therapy evolved into a professional activity when she openedherDoubleLStudioin1996.

The “bug” of working the clay with her hands came from her childhood in a family of confectioners. She spent many hours watching the little marzipan fruits so typical of the Algarve being made,andtryingherhandatmakingthemtoo.

Sheismostexcitedandmotivatedbycreativityandthechallengeof transforming;seeingtheREBIRTHofthematerials.

Natural de Olhão, Suzy Constantino é licenciada em Artes Visuais e explicaqueosseustrabalhoseprojetossãoguiadospelaintuição.

TrabalhanaAssociaçãodeSaúdeMentaldoAlgarvecomomonitora de atividades artísticas e, entretanto, criou a marca Hortelã Pimentaedesenvolvediversosateliêseoficinascriativas.

Nestaexposiçãoapresentatrabalhosquesignificamumreencontro com a vida e com a sua essência. Trabalhos produzidos quando completoumeioséculodevidaequesão:“Umresgatodasteiasdo passadonoEu,ondemereencontrei”

Olhão-born Suzy Constantino may have a Bachelor's degree in VisualArtsbutsheclaimsshehasalwayshadaconnectionwiththe artsandthatherworkandprojectsareguidedbyintuition. She currently works at the Algarve Mental Health Association, where she is an art instructor. She created the brand Hortelã Pimenta (“Peppermint”) and organises a variety of creative workshops.

In this exhibition, visitors can see works that signify a re-encounter with life and its essence. “When you're half a century old, you feel theneedtore-encountersomethingthathasbeenlostintime,”Suzy admits. “This exhibition is something of a throwback to my past, whereIre-encounteredmyself.”
