In 2022, we are re-opening our doors to culture. The meeting point will be a new Cycle of Exhibitions that will challenge everyone to explore a variety of cultural hubs and activities, including: the Municipal Gallery, the Centro de Artes e Ofícios (Art and Trade Centre) and the Alportel MuseumCentre.

Spaces with so much history that continue to attract visitors year after year. For this, we can thank the diversity and quality of the local, national and international artists who choose São Brás de Alportel as the place to show their work to the world. Messages expressed in different media – canvas, photographs and ceramics as well as crossgenerational collections and a host of other options to enrich our essence.

“Os Amigos da Filatelia” é um grupo informal de colecionadores residentes nos concelhos de São Brás de Alportel, Faro, Olhão e Albufeira. Desde 2006, já apresentaram inúmeras exposições nos concelhosacimareferidos.

Desde 2015, organizam anualmente exposições de colecionismo, na GaleriaMunicipaldeSãoBrásdeAlportel.

Este ano presenteiam a comunidade São Brás de Alportel com a exposição: “Pela tua Rica Saúde - Juntos ultrapassamos o COVID 19” onde abordam diferentes modalidades de colecionismo relacionadas comotemasaúde,destacando-secomosempreafilatelia.

The“FriendsofStamp-Collecting”isaninformalgroupofcollectorswho live in the municipalities of São Brás de Alportel, Faro, Olhão and Albufeira. Since 2006, they have organised numerous exhibitions in the municipalitieswheretheylive.

A sua primeira exposição reflete a jornada de autodescoberta e crescimento espiritual através de arte abstrata com tinta acrílica e pinturas em aguarela. A sua abordagem abrange outras áreas e inclui a combinação dos seus talentos fotográficos e artísticos com o trabalho fotográficoindependente.

A Singaporean by birth, the artist spent her youth and part of her adult lifeinSouthAfrica.ShehasalsolivedintheUnitedKingdomandFrance wheresheobtainedherdiplomainphotographyfromthePhotographic Institute and developed her photography expertise in fields such as landscapes,informalportraitsandmacros.

TheAlgarvehasbeenherhomeforthelastsixyears.Sheisamemberof the Algarve Photography Group, which is based at the Costume Museum.

Her first exhibition reflects her journey of self-discovery and spiritual growth though abstract art with acrylics and watercolours Her approach encompasses other areas and includes combining her photographicandartistictalentswithindependentphotographicwork.

Ricardo Belela e Adriana Reis são amigos com historiais, ideias e capacidades distintas que se juntaram para desenvolver projetos artísticos. Formado na área de gestão, foi na fotografia que Ricardo começou a exprimir e demonstrar o que os seus olhos veem. Sempre com um gosto pelas artes foi na maquilhagem e na pintura que Adriana Reis encontrou a sua paixão Juntos têm desenvolvido diversos projetos, entre os quais o “Beneath the Shadows” que, através de um jogo de luz e ambiente, apresenta 9 mulheres de diferentes idades e vivências, de uma forma única e intimista, ao mesmo tempo que homenageiamaotrabalhodofalecidofotógrafoPeterLindbergh.

RicardoBelelaandAdrianaReisarefriendswithdifferentbackgrounds, ideas and abilities, who work on artistic projects together. Ricardo's educational background is in management and he began using photography to express and demonstrate what his eyes see. Meanwhile,Adriana,whohasalwayshadalikingforthearts,foundher creativestreakinmake-upandpainting.Theyhavedevelopedanumber of projects together, including “Beneath the Shadows”, which uses a combination of light and ambience to present nine women of different ages and backgrounds in a unique and intimate way, while simultaneously paying tribute to the work of deceased photographer PeterLindbergh.

A artista belga Françoise Devroede faz parte de uma nova geração de artistas dedicados à criação de tapeçarias de alto liço, que perpetuam estaartequenotabilizouaFlandresdesdeaIdadeMédia.

O artista alemão, Raymond Parfait conciliou ao longo da vida uma carreira na indústria biomédica com a pintura e a cerâmica. Fascinado pelas luzes, cores, paisagens e pela arquitetura tradicional algarvias, imortaliza-asnassuasaguarelas,retratosepinturasaóleo. Residentes no Algarve, estes artistas têm exposto em vários cantos do mundo.

Françoise Devroede comes from Belgium and belongs to a new generation of artists devoted to the creation of high-warp tapestries, whoperpetuatethisartthatmadeFlandersfamousintheMiddleAges. Every one of her tapestries is unique. While the materials and weaving areclassical,thedesignisdecidedlycontemporary.

German artist Raymond Parfait painted and created ceramic art alongsidehiscareerinthebiomedicalindustry.Fascinatedbythelights, colours, landscapes and traditional architecture of the Algarve, he immortalisestheminhiswatercolours,portraitsandoilpaintings. The artists, who are Algarve residents, have exhibited in various places aroundtheworld.

José Manuel Belchior e Vítor Lourenço são dois colecionadores sãobrasenses. Partilham a mesma paixão pela História da sua terra. José Manuel Belchior and Vítor Lourenço are two collectors from São Brás.Theysharethesamepassionforthehistoryoftheirhometown.It was this same passion that gave rise to their desire to organise this exhibition. Pelo terceiro ano consecutivo, a Galeria Municipal apresenta a mostra de cerâmica contemporânea de autor que conta com a presença de artistas nacionais. Pretende-se, divulgar o quão fascinante é a ligação doartistaaobarro.

Metaforicamente,diz-sequeohomemfoi“moldado”apartirdobarro, mas ninguém contesta que é o artista que molda o barro e dá forma à arteeapartirdaarte.

Nesta mostra serão apresentadas peças criadas com diferentes inspirações,coresetécnicas.

Uma exposição conjunta de sete artistas amigos, com um denominador comum: a Escola de Artes Decorativas António Arroio. Escola que frequentaram e onde, nos anos 60, nasceu a amizade e a camaradagem que perdura até aos dias de hoje.

Amy Madeira, Anabella Vilares, Fernando Peixoto, Mimi Prosperi, Natércia Gamboa, Pedro Batata e Rui Cristino da Silva concluíram os cursos de Pintura, Cerâmica e Litografia e juntam-se nesta exposição para dar a conhecer os seus trabalhos. Uma obra que já conta com vários anos de atividade e alguns prémios a nível nacional e internacional.

A joint exhibition by seven friends and artists with a common denominator: the António Arroio School of Decorative Arts. They met and became friends while attending this school in the 1960s and their friendship remains strong to this day.

Amy Madeira, Anabella Vilares, Fernando Peixoto, Mimi Prosperi, Natércia Gamboa, Pedro Batata and Rui Cristino da Silva took courses in painting, ceramics and lithography and are organising this group exhibition to promote their works. They have been working together now for several years and have won various national and international prizes.

É assim que Sónia Mendez descreve o universo que a inspira ao retorno às origens com matérias-primas que dão lugar a verdadeiras obras de arte, inovadoras, arrojadas, onde a simplicidade e a elegância contrastam com a excentricidade. Artesã por vocação e amor, reinventa-se a cada peça e ousa com técnicas inovadoras para a fusão perfeita entre o barro e a palma em peças de decoração utilitárias.

Destaca um painel, criado com a artista têxtil Susana Mendez, apresenta um painel, que revela uma perspetiva inovadora de conciliação de saberes e experiências do mundo da cerâmica, empreita e tecelagem.

“The challenge springs from nature, where ancient know-how is reinvented in the hands of those who pay tribute to the past and the project for the future through artistic creation”. This is how Sónia Mendez describes the universe that inspired her return to her roots, with raw materials giving rise to true works of art; works that are innovative and bold and in which simplicity and elegance contrast with originality

An artisan by vocation and passion, she reinvents herself in every piece and makes daring use of innovative techniques to create useful decorative pieces that are the perfect fusion between clay and palm. She highlights a panel that she and textile artist Susana Mendez created together. It reveals an innovative perspective of harmonisation between the expertise and experiences of the world of ceramics, palm weaving and textile weaving.

Ben Helmink é natural dos Países Baixos. Estudou arte no Rietveld Academy e ensinou arte em Amesterdão. A viver no Alentejo desde 2006, realiza workshops no seu estúdio perto de Santana da Serra.

As suas obras inspiram-se nas gentes do Alentejo e paisagens, arquitectura antiga, dança e música. Em 2020 foi distinguido com o International Prize New York com os trípticos. Para esta exposição, inspirou-se na música de vinyl / portador do som ( Long Player - record ) com o som análogo e mais natural.

Ben Helmink comes from the Netherlands. He studied art at the Rietveld Academy and then taught it in Amsterdam. Having settled in the Alentejo in 2006, he organises workshops in his studio near Santana da Serra.

His works are inspired by the people and landscapes of the Alentejo, old architecture, dance and music. In 2020, he won the International Prize New York for his triptychs. For this exhibition, he took his inspiration from music on vinyl LPs, which produce analogue and more natural sound.

São “10 Anos D'Impulsos” que se celebram através desta exposição assente na história da Associação Teia D'Impulsos (TDI) que, ao longo deste período, desenvolveu junto da comunidade, em toda a região do Algarve mais de 40 projetos e 1.588 ações. Uma exposição itinerante que está a percorrer o Algarve de lés-a-lés. Depois de passar por Portimão, onde fica a sede da TDI, a história da Associação foi já partilhada em Lagoa, Vila do Bispo e no Rogil. Chega agora à Galeria Municipal de São Brás de Alportel e convida a explorar as várias iniciativas sociais, culturais, desportivas e ambientais, entre as quais: a Rota do Petisco, Vela Solidária, FICA e os Cool Markets.

Celebrating “10 Anos D'Impulsos” (“10 years of impulses”), this exhibition is based on the story of the Teia D'Impulsos (TDI) Association. Over the 10 years referred to in the name, the association has worked on more than 40 projects and 1,588 actions in conjunction with the community throughout the Algarve. It is a travelling exhibition that is touring the Algarve from one end to the other. After starting in Portimão, where the TDI is based, it then moved on to share the Association's story in Lagoa, Vila do Bispo and Rogil. Now it is the turn of the São Brás de Alportel Municipal Gallery to host the exhibition and invite visitors to explore the various social initiatives that include Rota do Petisco, Vela Solidária, FICA and Cool Markets.

Natural de Lisboa, Ana Banon tornou-se algarvia de coração aos 11 anos. Filha de um artista plástico, desde nova se apaixonou pelas artes. Aos 12 anos começou a ter aulas de desenho e depois aventurou-se na pintura a óleo como autodidata. Aos 16 anos entrou num concurso de artes plásticas onde conseguiu um honroso 3.º lugar. Desde os 17 anos tem participado em várias exposições em galerias de arte portuguesas e espanholas. O sonho de seguir Belas Artes ficou para trás, mas frequenta formações na área. Após um interregno entre 2007 e 2019, Ana voltou a pintar em 2020. Esta exposição é o resultado desta reaprendizagem de traço e sombreado. Um reerguer de pinceladas e cores. O sonho retido no tempo vai, aos poucos, tomando forma e tornando-se realidade.

Lisbon-born Ana Banon has been an Algarvean at heart since the age of eleven. The daughter of a plastic artist, she fell in love with the arts at a young age. She started taking drawing lessons at the age of 12 before taking her first steps in oil-painting as a self-taught artist. At the age of 16, she entered a plastic arts competition where she achieved an honourable third place. Since the age of 17, she has participated in various exhibitions at Portuguese and Spanish art galleries. Although she had to set aside her dreams of taking Fine Art, she nevertheless attends classes in the field. After a hiatus lasting from 2007 to 2019, Ana returned to painting in 2020. This exhibition is the result of her relearning of outlines and shading. A revival of brush strokes and colours. The dream, on standby for so long, is gradually taking shape and coming true.

Esta exposição debruça-se sobre uma manifestação religiosa e cultural enraizada e muito acarinhada pela comunidade são-brasense. Um momento de partilha e de vários olhares sobre esta tradição secular única, de beleza ímpar, que envolve a comunidade e que atinge o seu auge na procissão do Domingo de Páscoa, onde os andores dão lugar às flores e aos cânticos “Ressuscitou como disse! Aleluia! Aleluia! Aleluia!”, ecoados pelos homens da terra, que erguem majestosas tochas artísticas de flores naturais. A procissão percorre as ruas da vila, atapetadas com magníficos tapetes floridos, de cores vibrantes e aromas primaveris que se estendem por mais de um quilómetro e que são um ex-líbris.

This exhibition focuses on a religious and cultural demonstration that is deeply-rooted in and much-loved by the São Brás community. It is a moment that people share as they turn their eyes on an ancient and uniquely beautiful tradition; involving the whole community, it reaches its climax with a procession on Easter Sunday, in which the litters give way to flowers and the locals sing hymns – “He has risen as I said! Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah!” – while holding aloft majestic artistic torches made of fresh flowers. The procession takes place along the town streets, which are laid with magnificent carpets of flowers stretching for over a kilometre. Their vibrant colours and springtime fragrances are a hallmark of the event.

Amanda Gleaves nasceu em Liverpool, mudou-se para Portugal em 1989 e reside em São Brás de Alportel há cerca de uma década.

Desde que se lembra a arte tem sido uma grande paixão na sua vida e adapta-se a vários estilos. A sua grande paixão são os mapas e já fez vários mapas personalizados. Há pouco tempo também começou a trabalhar com Papier Maché.

Na exposição “Várias Fases”, Amanda partilha a sua arte com a comunidade, numa combinação de estilos e inclui obras a lápis até obras em tela.

Amanda Gleaves was born in Liverpool and moved to Portugal in 1989. She has been living in São Brás de Alportel for some 10 years now

Art has been a great passion in her life for as long as she can remember and she enjoys various styles. Maps are her greatest passion and she has made a number of customised ones. Not long ago she also began working with papier mâché. In her “Várias Fases” exhibition, Amanda shares her art with the community, using a combination of styles that includes works done in pencil through to works on canvas.

Natural de são Bartolomeu de Messines, a ceramista Lília Lopes começou a dedicar-se à cerâmica como uma atividade terapêutica. O que começou como sendo uma terapia transformou-se em profissão, com a criação do Atelier Dois LL, em 1996.

O “bichinho” de meter as mãos no barro é o resultado de ter crescido numa família de doceiras e de tanto ver, experimentar e fazer os típicos bolos de amêndoa do Algarve. Desafiando a criatividade e o papel de cada um na sociedade, “Do lado do X” é a expressão artística e viva da vida.

Ceramic artist Lília Lopes was born in São Bartolomeu de Messines and began focusing on ceramic art as therapeutic activity. What began as therapy evolved into a professional activity when Lília Lopes opened her Atelier Dois LL (Double L Studio) in 1996.

The “bug” of working the clay with her hands came from her childhood in a family of confectioners. She spent many hours watching the little marzipan fruits so typical of the Algarve being made, and trying her hand at making them too.

Challenging creativity and the role that each of us plays in society, “Do lado do X” is the artistic and living expression of life.

Natural de São Romão, a educadora de infância Tânia Madeira sempre gostou de artes plásticas. Gosto que tem desenvolvido na sua área profissional e que, durante a quarentena, ganhou nova dimensão. Criou peças com materiais que tinha em casa, entre os quais, um saco de cimento-cola com o qual produziu vasos, porta velas, trava-portas, bases de incenso e outras peças decorativas e utilitárias. Peças onde concilia a simplicidade ao natural e rústico e que tenta personalizar para cada cliente e que agora são dadas a conhecer nesta exposição do seu projeto “Arte com Garra”.

Tânia Madeira, a nursery school teacher from São Romão, has always liked the plastic arts. Her job has further developed this liking, which has gained in importance during lockdown. She has created pieces using materials she had at home, including a sack of cement that she used to make vases, candle-holders, doorstops, incense-holders and other decorative and useful pieces. Her work is simple, natural and rustic in design and she tries to personalise it for each customer. Now visitors can admire her creations in this exhibition from her project “Art with Guts”.

A madeira tem tanto valor como qualquer outro bem precioso e a sua aplicação é tão vasta como o horizonte com o qual nos deslumbramos. Ao aprender com ela, desenharam-se equipamentos que permitiram a descoberta do mundo: taças em que comemos, onde relaxamos e camas onde sonhamos com o futuro! Cada peça tem o seu ADN, tal como os anéis de cada tronco que carregamos nas nossas mãos. Nesta exposição, Marco São Vicente apresenta o resultado da evolução natural de um desejo de descobrir possibilidades infinitas conjugando funcionalidade e arte com beleza rústica natural esculpindo o seu caminho para um design moderno.

Wood is just as valuable as any other precious good and it can be put to an array of uses that is as vast as the horizon that we find so stunning. Learning with wood led to items being designed that enabled the world to be discovered: utensils that we use to eat, chairs where we can sit and relax and beds where we dream of the future! Every piece has its own DNA, just like the rings in every trunk we carry in our hands. In this exhibition, Marco São Vicente shows us the result of the natural evolution of a desire to discover endless possibilities by combining functional and art with natural rustic beauty, sculpting his route to modern design.

Nascido numa terra que ama e que é marcada pela subsistência humana (o interior da serra algarvia), Domingos Romeira Vaz expõe trabalhos feitos a partir de cana.

Desde muito cedo sentiu a necessidade de adquirir capacidades para sobreviver. “Aprendemos que tudo o que tínhamos, foi fruto de árduo trabalho de várias gerações que nos antecederam. (…) tudo passava por preparar o futuro dos nossos descendentes. Era a cultura da serra”, explica o artista que assim aprendeu os saberes e artes da sobrevivência, a desbravar a vida, a seguir as leis da natureza, o destino e a colher da terra e usar as coisas que ela dava.

Born in a land that he loves and that is marked by human subsistence (the countryside in the Algarve uplands), Domingos Romeira Vaz exhibits works he makes from cane.

From a very young age, he felt the need to learn survival skills. “We learned that everything we had was the result of the hard work done by the various generations before ours. (...) everything was done with a view to preparing our descendants' future. That was the culture of the uplands,” explains the artist who thus learned the skills and arts of survival and made his way in life, following the laws of nature, destiny and gathering and using the bounty of the land.
